Glad to meet you[edit]

Hello, I am a Taiwanese. I found your page through the keyword "Verwaerloosde Formosa". I see some page you are editing is about the history of Taiwan. It's really nice to know more about my own country. Since you are now living in Taiwan, you might find that most Taiwaneses know little about their own history. Glad to meet you. Sino-French War[edit]

Hi there! Congratulations on your excellent work on the early European settlement of Taiwan. I don't know whether you are interested, but I have written a series of articles on the Sino-French War (including the Keelung Campaign and the Pescadores Campaign and the Japanese invasion of Taiwan (1895), among other articles on nineteenth-century Asian history. I used to live in Taiwan but am now working in Hong Kong. If you feel like getting involved with my Taiwan stuff, particularly on the events of 1895, I would welcome any additional material you could provide. I will shortly be publishing a book on the Sino-French War, and plan to follow it with an account of the Japanese invasion in 1895 (my enthusiasm having been aroused by watching the recent Taiwanese film '1895').

Keep up the good work, it's nice to see well-researched material on Taiwan.

Thanks for the barnstar, I've been on holiday recently and out of touch with computers. I see you got one too, and very well deserved it is. I'll be back in the office next Monday and will resume my work on Wikipedia then. I still need to rewrite the article on the 1874 Japanese expedition to Taiwan. Expect I'll be bumping into you again before too long.
Incidentally, are you living in Taipei? I'm based in Hong Kong, but I get over to Taipei every now and then, and it would be nice to meet up next time I'm there.

Candidius and Lamey Island Massacre[edit]

Hi, Taiwantaffy: Bravo! Outstanding work! I have a question about Candidius. I find a letter on page 106 of Campbell Formosa under the Dutch from the Commanders of the Fleet, etc. to Hendrik Brouwer mentioning "We have very amply discussed with Mr. Candidius the best means to be employed for preventing Takaran from going to Japan, and have concluded that it would be well for Candidius on his arrival to present this Takaran with some gifts [etc., etc., I am to lazy to type] " ...anyway, this Mattau headman Takaran, or Taccaran, was to be informed of the Dutch plan to devastate Golden Lion island and "on the intercession of Candidius be employed as chief of this expedition". Would you know, if Candidius was in any other way involved in the planning of this massacre?

Best regards, Rolf-Peter Wille (talk) 15:50, 10 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks a lot, Taffy, for your quick and interesting answer! Rolf-Peter Wille (talk) 04:11, 11 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Unreferenced BLPs[edit]

Hello Taiwantaffy! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 1 of the articles that you created is tagged as an Unreferenced Biography of a Living Person. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to ensure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. If you were to bring this article up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 942 article backlog. Once the article is adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Pe̍h-ōe-jī GAN[edit]

You recently nominated Pe̍h-ōe-jī to become a Good Article. The article looks good. The only problem was that your rewrite subpage is not entirely by you but rather has one edit by another user. Your copy-and-pasting of this violated copying within Wikipedia and Cut-and-paste moves because you did not mention where you got it from. As the edit by User:Debresser was a minor one, this is an easy oversight to make and there is no doubt you worked entirely in good faith. However, I fixed this problem (see talk:Pe̍h-ōe-jī). With that problem resolved, I passed the article. Please consider reviewing some other GAN to help deal with the backlog. Remember that User:Taiwantaffy/POJ must never be deleted.

With this in mind, I notice that you have additional subpages. In the future, please make sure that this sort of incident does not recur by properly attributing text with authors other than you that you copy from rewrite pages to the main namespace in the future. If you happen to have done something similar to this in the past, again make sure that copy-and-pasted text, if any of it is by someone other than you, is properly attributed. If it helps, you can always work on temporary rewrites outside of Wikipedia, using your favourite text editor.

Thank you and keep up the good work. Miss Madeline | Talk to Madeline 07:45, 17 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry re. my lousy mood[edit]

It's a poor excuse, but I was in a crummy mood when I logged on and I reacted badly to the AfD notice. I wouldn't have reacted at all beyond voting to either keep or delete it. This site needs a lot more authors like you; I've spent too much time playing policeman and not enough time in the article space as of late. Thank you for your diligence and consideration and please accept my apologies for getting upset at you. You did the right thing bringing the article up for AfD. That's how substandard stuff often gets fixed.

Wikipedia Ambassador Program is looking for new Online Ambassadors[edit]

Hi! I noticed your activity as a Good Article reviewer, and wanted to let you know about the Wikipedia Ambassador Program, and specifically the role of Online Ambassador. We're looking for friendly Wikipedians who are good at reviewing articles and giving feedback to serve as mentors for students who are assigned to write for Wikipedia in their classes.

If you're interested, I encourage you to take a look at the Online Ambassador guidelines; the "mentorship process" describes roughly what will be expected of mentors in the coming term. If that's something you want to do, please apply!

You can find instructions for applying at WP:ONLINE. The main things we're looking for in Online Ambassadors are friendliness, regular activity (since mentorship is a commitment that spans several months), and the ability to give detailed, substantive feedback on articles (both short new articles, and longer, more mature ones).

I hope to hear from you soon.--Sage Ross - Online Facilitator, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 20:21, 20 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,

recently at Talk:Taiwan High Speed Rail, I and User:Multivariable have been discussing potential improvements of that article with view to a Featured Article nomination. However, apart from the Guild of CE, so far it was only the two of us discussing, and we would like to hear more opinions. (In particular, about the photo selection.) You say on your userpage that you live in Taiwan, and I have seen you editing several articles related to public transport in Taiwan, so I hope that you may be an editor with an interest in the subject, and I would like to invite you to join in that discussion. --Rontombontom (talk) 12:38, 10 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Non-free rationale for File:A Pail of Oysters first edition.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:A Pail of Oysters first edition.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described in section F6 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page.
