June 2018 GOCE newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors June 2018 News Welcome to the June 2018 GOCE newsletter, in which you will find Guild updates since the February edition. Progress continues to be made on the copyediting backlog, which has been reduced to 7 months and reached a new all-time low. Requests continue to be handled efficiently this year, with 272 completed by the end of May (an average completion time of 10.5 days). Fewer than 10% of these waited longer than 20 days, and the longest wait time was 29 days. Wikipedia in general, and the Guild in particular, experienced a deep loss with the death on 20 March of Corinne. Corinne (a GOCE coordinator since 1 July 2016) was a tireless aide on the requests page, and her peerless copyediting is a part of innumerable GAs and FAs. Her good cheer, courtesy and tact are very much missed. March drive: The goal was to remove June, July and August 2017 from our backlog and all February 2018 Requests (a total of 219 articles). This drive was an outstanding success, and by the end of the month all but eight of these articles were cleared. Of the 33 editors who signed up, 19 recorded 277 copy edits (425,758 words). April blitz: This one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 15 through 21 April, focusing on Requests and the last eight articles tagged in August 2017. At the end of the week there were only 17 pending requests, with none older than 17 days. Of the nine editors who signed up, eight editors completed 22 copy edits (62,412 words). May drive: We set out to remove September, October and November 2017 from our backlog and all April 2018 Requests (a total of 298 articles). There was great success this month with the backlog more than halved from 1,449 articles at the beginning of the month to a record low of 716 articles. Officially, of the 20 who signed up, 15 editors recorded 151 copy edits (248,813 words). Coordinator elections: It's election time again. Nominations for Guild coordinators (who will serve a six-month term for the second half of 2018) have begun, and will close at 23:59 UTC on 15 June. All Wikipedia editors in good standing are eligible, and self-nominations are encouraged. Voting will take place between 00:01 UTC on 16 June and 23:59 UTC on 30 June. Meal Kit

Hey Tim, I recently made some changes to the wikipedia page of Meal Kit, which were reverted.

1. Regarding the definition of Meal Kit, Its not a subscription service. Subscription service is a type of business model that's prevalent in this industry. 2. Its necessary to let people know about the operations or production that takes place in Meal Kit. 3. I would suggest a section that discusses the different sales channel that are being used in industry and how consumer experience differs. 4. Meal kit industry is at crossroads and there are tons of problems that needs to be talked about.

There is so much to write on the wikipedia page of Meal Kit. Right now, in true honesty it sucks as it doesn't offer any value to the readers or any insight into the meal kit product/industry. My edits may have some poor editing but the content is right and valuable. Hi Rishisinghal92 - thanks for your contributions. Normally when the content has simple grammatical errors or typos, I quickly make the corrections and move on. In this case, the issue was more that the text you added was unsourced. Without sources, it starts to fall under the category of what's called original research. There's more info about this here: WP:OR. If you have reliable third party-sourcing to validate the text you'd like to add, let me know and we can work together to add the info in a proper way. Thanks timtempleton - for your reply. I understand the problem now. Well, I agree most of what I wrote was original research. I have some articles listed down which we can tag. Further, I just want to let you know what I am doing. There maybe a editor bias. I was earlier founder of Meal Kit company in New Delhi. From last 4 months, I've moved to Chicago. My current venture is building a technology platform for Restaurants, SuperMarkets and other meal kit companies to produce meal kits and deliver them hyperlocally. Now, I'm planning to write a bunch of stuff as part of content marketing strategy. Do you think it would be fair in accordance to wiki to cite those sources here? There are also articles on Forbes, different blogs which provide the information in more detail. I'm fairly new to wikipedia and want to work on meal kit page. In all honesty, my objective is to create awareness about meal kit and not to promote my venture in any way. Maybe I should first write in the talk section and if you find that right or after editing, we can publish to main content.

Thanks for clarifying. If you use proper sources and don't make the content about your company, that should be fine. We want to be careful here that we don't get into conflict of interest territory, since Wikipedia isn't meant to be a promotional mechanism for companies. If you find reliable third party sources that you think add valuable info about the meal kit business in general, you can post them on the talk page and I can review to see what info we can extract. Hi Tim. You are autoconfirmed. You need the "Autopatrolled" user right so that the articles you create are automatically patrolled in Special:NewPages. You currently do not have the "Autopatrolled" user right according to Special:UserRights/Timtempleton. Hello, Tim. Since another user objected to discussion there, I'm following up on your comments at Talk:Cryptozoology/Archive 5#Merger_proposal. As discussed over at cryptozoology, the term cryptid is only used by cryptozoology proponents (the subculture that formed it) and in outlets influenced by their use. Academics who study these entities, whether from the folklore record or the fossil record, don't use this term. What cryptozoologists consider to be cryptids varies by the cryptozoologist, and can be anything from what they consider to be a living dinosaur or even an alien. Some of this stuff even comes from fiction (for example, Partridge Creek monster). This pseudoscience overlaps pretty heavily with related pseudosciences, particularly Young Earth creationism and ufology. If you haven't already, give cryptozoology a read, as it explains a lot of these issues and the article is in pretty solid shape these days. :bloodofox: (talk) 20:29, 28 August 2018 (UTC)

Upfield (company)

Hi Timtempleton (and heads up to @Barkeep49:), I did a content fork of Unilever. Barkeep49 pointed out that it fails NCORP and turned it into a redirect to I Can't Believe It's Not Butter!. I didn't think that ICBINB! was an appropriate target over any of the other products, so I added a subsection to Unilever. I have no great interest in this company - I was just trying to turn some red links blue - and I appreciate that it might be too new to be notable. I found the page through WP:NPP and take WP:NCORP seriously. Generally when evaluating for NCORP Wikipedia does not consider routine business transactions, including funding, mergers, or spin-offs notable. That's what I found for Upfield. I did a fair amount of looking for sources as I did expect it to be notable. I did consider a Unilever redirect but I redirected to I Can't Believe because it had the most page views of any of the subsidiary brands. Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 22:58, 29 August 2018 (UTC)

Looking for feedback at Gallup (company)

Hello Timtempleton! I'm curious to see if you could offer some feedback or pointers on a request of mine at Gallup (company). Much of the Gallup article focuses on the Gallup Poll; while obviously the most well-known part of the company, the poll is just a fraction of Gallup's business. In 2015, you made a constructive edit to help the article show more than the poll by adding the Gallup Press section.

Initially, editors at Talk:Gallup (company) disagreed with my request, saying that content on Gallup's non-polling businesses needed top-tier sourcing. I went back and trimmed my request, citing only major nationally recognized publications as sources. In my latest effort, I received feedback that the content is promotional and is inappropriate because Wikipedia is not a directory. That's certainly not the intent here: I am trying to provide context to the article to show that Gallup's research and consulting services are the majority of its businesses.

I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for calculation the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). ArbCom 2018 election voter message

Hello, Timtempleton. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. December 2018 GOCE newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors December 2018 Newsletter Hello and welcome to the December 2018 GOCE newsletter. Here is what's been happening since the August edition. Thanks to everyone who participated in the August blitz (results), which focused on Requests and the oldest backlog month. Of the twenty editors who signed up, eleven editors recorded 37 copy edits. For the September drive (results), of the twenty-three people who signed up, nineteen editors completed 294 copy edits. Our October blitz (results) focused on Requests, geography, and food and drink articles. Of the fourteen people who signed up, eleven recorded a total of 57 copy edits. For the November drive (results), twenty-two people signed up, and eighteen editors recorded 273 copy edits. This helped to bring the backlog to a six-month low of 825 articles. The December blitz will run for one week, from 16 to 22 December. Sign up now! Elections: Nominations for the Guild's coordinators for the first half of 2019 will be open from 1 to 15 December. Voting will then take place and the election will close on 31 December at 23:59 UTC. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for calculation the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). @Rosguill: Thanks for reviewing the page. I removed the sole primary source, a Broadcom company financial filing. Company financial filings are used in almost every major public company article to source the financials in the infobox, but since it didn't add anything too earthshaking to the article - just substantiating an uncontroversial foundation funding event - it wasn't that important. I also added more recent coverage from Scientific American. From my experience in AfD, there's more than enough independent coverage in reliable sources to demonstrate notability. If you get stuck behind a source paywall and want to confirm the breadth and quality of the coverage that is there now, let me know and I can email you the text. My intent was to find media coverage substantiating notability - that's your biggest hurdle to getting your article approved, whether the promotional material is also removed or not. @LorriBrown: The three sources are passable, but of the three, the Galleries West piece seems to be the most journalistic. It's hard for me to gauge the reliability of the Sask art board and Concordia University sites. It's not written anywhere, but absent top tier coverage by well-known media organizations like the NY Times, USA Today or CNN, my rule of thumb is you need at least 8-10 articles in reliable (non-promotional) sources, including at least 2 profiles, to comfortably meet the notability threshold for the subject of an article. The coverage of Tate appears to fall short of this. There may be others with a better sense of the Canadian art scene who might have a different perspective. TimTempleton I wanted to add that the Vanguard magazine was an important Canadian publication by a well respected art gallery, the Vancouver Art Gallery during that time. The Concordia University (Toronto) Fine Arts archived on the CCCA Canadian Art Database, a project to broaden public awareness of contemporary art in Canada, which included articles from the Vanguard, Canadian Art, Border Crossings, CMagazine, & Impulse. There are two articles about KT that were published in the Vanguard and three articles in ISSUE magazine another publication in Vancouver during that time period. Thank you! @LorriBrown: - when I say others with a better sense of the Canadian art scene, I'm referring to other editors from Canada who might be better able to judge the notability of your sources. I'm unfamiliar with your soruces, and without more mainstream coverage, I have a hard time defending Tate's notability. March GOCE newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors March 2019 Newsletter Hello and welcome to the March newsletter, a brief update of Guild activities since December 2018. All being well, we're planning to issue these quarterly in 2019, balancing the need to communicate widely with the avoidance of filling up talk pages. Don't forget you can unsubscribe at any time; see below. January Drive: Thanks to everyone for the splendid work in January's Backlog Elimination Drive. We removed copyedit tags from all of the articles tagged in our original target months of June, July and August 2018, and by 24 January we ran out of articles. After adding September, we finished the month with 8 target articles remaining and 842 left in the backlog. GOCE copyeditors also completed 48 requests for copyedit in January. Of the 31 people who signed up for this drive, 24 copyedited at least one article. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. Blitz: Thanks to everyone who participated in the February Blitz. Of the 15 people who signed up, 13 copyedited at least one article. Participants claimed 32 copyedits, including 15 requests. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. Progress report: As of 23:39, 18 March 2019 (UTC), GOCE copyeditors have completed 108 requests since 1 January and the backlog stands at 851 articles. March Drive: The month-long March drive is now underway; the target months are October and November 2018. Awards will be given to everyone who copyedits at least one article from the backlog. Odd signature

I wasn't pinged this time either. Now I think it's the lowercase initial letters in your signature links. This edit from an alt account with an imitation of your signature did not ping me. Neither did [4] with uppercase user page link, but I got pinged when all three links were uppercase in [5]. That's strange. mw:Manual:Echo#Technical details says: "The signature must contain a plain wiki link [[ ]] to the user's page, user talk page, or contributions page". That worked too. It doesn't matter how the wikilink to my user page is produced. Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-echo has the option "Successful mention" ("Notify me when I send out a mention to someone.") Thanks on "esp." and question

Hi Tim. I hope this is the way to write to you but I'm not sure. In any event I wanted to thank you for answering my question about "esp.". I might not have written only to do that, but I wanted to note that I apparently didn't a notification on your reply and so I posted the question again, following which I got a bot message saying the original message had been archived and linking me to it. Is that not getting notifications on Teahouse replies usual, so you have to keep checking if you want to see if and how your question has (possibly) been answered? Maybe I didn't click on "Watch this page", but I pretty much always do that when I edit a Wikipedia page, so it's a little hard for me to imagine that I didn't... oh, but I wouldn't want to follow the Teahouse page and read everybody's questions all the time, would I? And yet I don't think I considered that before, so I'm still a bit curious and confused about this. I'll also comment that "esp." seems so curiously inappropriate for what I've always understood to be a partnership that I don't reproach myself for not having thought of "espoused", though one might perhaps consider it to be obvious enough to be guessable. Changing a company's old Logo for a New version

Timtempleton, I apologize for any rudeness, it was not my intention. I am hoping to replace the logo properly, by uploading an SVG file that can be used universally by anybody. A version that adheres to the corporate standard of the company.

@Colegagreg: I couldn't find a clean logo on your site. You could have just said what you said here as a comment in that thread, but since you're new no problem. You can indent by adding successive colons  : to indent responses in threads. Also, please sign your posts with four tildes ~~~~ so we know who you are.
