GOCE March newsletter[edit]

Guild of Copy Editors March 2020 Newsletter

Hello and welcome to the March newsletter, a brief update of Guild activities since December 2019. All being well, we're planning to issue these quarterly in 2020, balancing the need to communicate widely with the avoidance of filling up talk pages. Don't forget you can unsubscribe at any time; see below.

Election results: There was little changeover in the roster of Guild Coordinators, with Miniapolis stepping down with distinction as a coordinator emeritus while Jonesey95 returned as lead coordinator. The next election is scheduled for June 2020 and all Wikipedians in good standing may participate.

January Drive: Thanks to everyone for the splendid work, completing 215 copy edits including 56 articles from the Requests page and 116 backlog articles from the target months of June to August 2019. At the conclusion of the drive there was a record low of 323 articles in the copy editing backlog. Of the 27 editors who signed up for the drive, 21 copyedited at least one article. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

February Blitz: Of the 15 editors who signed up for this one-week blitz, 13 completed at least one copy edit. A total of 32 articles were copy edited, evenly split between the twin goals of requests and the oldest articles from the copy-editing backlog. Full results are here.

March Drive: Currently underway, this event is targeting requests and backlog articles from September to November 2019. As of 18 March, the backlog stands at a record low of 253 articles and is expected to drop further as the drive progresses. Awards will be given to everyone who copyedits at least one article from the backlog. Help set a new record and sign up now!

Progress report: As of 18 March, GOCE copyeditors have completed 161 requests in 2020 and there was a net reduction of 385 articles from the copy-editing backlog – a 60% decrease from the beginning of the year. Well done and thank you everyone!

Election reminder: It may only be March but don't forget our mid-year Election of Coordinators opens for nominations on 1 June. Coordinators normally serve a six-month term and are elected on an approval basis. Self-nominations are welcome. If you've thought of helping out at the Guild, or know of another editor who would make a good coordinator, please consider standing for election or nominating them here.

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators Jonesey95, Baffle gab1978, Reidgreg, Tdslk and Twofingered Typist

Response to your reply on the Teahouse[edit]

@David Fuchs:

I'll try and find that discussion (perhaps it's under one of the archived talk pages of the ST movie articles I mentioned). Thing is, from what you appeared to bring up with the Jaws and Godfather posters is that they have the regular theatrical posters and not just the art. I wouldn't want the author to be unhappy about anything, but it seems like a discussion should possibly be opened on these certain Star Trek film articles regarding whether to use the regular posters or just the art. ty for your help at teahouse[edit]

i just wanted to thank you for your valuable input at the coffeehouse. ive learned a bunch from it. take care and stay safe.ToeFungii (talk) 14:48, 9 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I tried again to make the change and the same editor undid it within minutes. It truly makes me laugh how some people are so intractable. I had thought, or only noticed, people being hardheads over facts, but its pathetic when simply trying to improve readability a user puts their feet in concrete. I even tried reaching out to the user to say if you dont like my change then at least recog the sentence is over 40 words and needs help without any success. its a shame there are a few people like this because they genuinely stop progress. thx. ToeFungii (talk) 16:09, 9 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@ToeFungii: there are some people dead set on owning articles that they work on. Sadly they are sometimes supported by admins in this violation of site norms. See my personal favorite from three years ago when I tried to add an infobox to Ian Fleming’s article and ran into a stubbornly entrenched group. Dead Link[edit]

Tim, thank you for your review of the AfC for Draft:Kyle_McMahon I reviewed the draft again and can not find any dead links. Are you able to kindly let me know what you found so I may fix?

@FrankNSteinJr: The ESPN link (#4) says it’s dead. TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 05:16, 10 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Tim. That's strange because that was a working link last week. I just googled it and got a new link from ESPN for the same story so I've switched it to that.

Appreciate it.

FrankNSteinJr (talk) 22:40, 10 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@FrankNSteinJr: That happens a lot. Media companies reorganize their links from time to time, to accommodate new technologies and search features and things of that ilk. You'd think that an automatic tagging of dead links on Wikipedia would be possible with current web crawler software. TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 00:28, 11 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

GOCE June newsletter[edit]

Guild of Copy Editors June 2020 Newsletter

Hello and welcome to the June newsletter, a brief update of Guild activities since March 2020. You can unsubscribe from our mailings at any time; see below. All times and dates stated are in UTC.

Current events

Election time: Nomination of candidates in our mid-year Election of Coordinators opened on 1 June, and voting will take place from 00:01 on 16 June. GOCE coordinators normally serve a six-month term and are elected on an approval basis. Self-nominations are welcome. If you've thought about helping out at the Guild, or you know of another editor who would make a good coordinator, please consider standing for election or nominating them here.

June Blitz: This blitz begins at 00:01 on 14 June and ends at 23:59 on 20 June, with themes of articles tagged for copyedit in May 2020 and requests.

Drive and blitz reports

March Drive: Self-isolation from coronavirus may have played a hand in making this one of our most successful backlog elimination drives. The copy-editing backlog was reduced from 477 to a record low of 118 articles, a 75% reduction. The last four months of 2019 were cleared, reducing the backlog to three months. Fifty requests were also completed, and the total word count of copy-edited articles was 759,945. Of the 29 editors who signed up, 22 completed at least one copy edit. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

April Blitz: This blitz ran from 12 to 18 April with a theme of Indian military history. Of the 18 people who signed up, 14 copyedited at least one article. Participants claimed a total of 60 copyedits. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

May Drive: This event marked the 10th anniversary of the GOCE's copy-editing drives, and set a goal of diminishing the backlog to just one month of articles, as close to zero articles as possible. We achieved the goal of eliminating all articles that had been tagged prior to the start of the drive, for the first time in our history! Of the 51 editors who signed up, 43 copyedited at least one article. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

Other news

Progress report: as of 2 June, GOCE participants had processed 328 requests since 1 January, which puts us on pace to exceed any previous year's number of requests. As of the end of the May drive, the backlog stood at just 156 articles, all tagged in May 2020.

Outreach: To mark the 10th anniversary of our first Backlog Elimination Drive, The Signpost contributor and GOCE participant Puddleglum2.0 interviewed project coordinators and copy-editors for the journal's April WikiProject Report. The Drive and the current Election of Coordinators have also been covered in The Signpost's May News and Notes page.

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators Jonesey95, Baffle gab1978, Reidgreg, Tdslk and Twofingered Typist.

Thank you[edit]

I wanted to take a moment to thank you for taking the time to investigate the Planet Fitness page.
I read a news item about the Youfit owner retiring, and out of curiousity went to the PF Wiki. When I saw he wasn't mentioned at all I did some digging and found the conflicting accounts. I corrected them on the page, my notes were deleted. Being new to Wiki, I was confused and bewildered -- I tried to present the information but user refused to back down. Anyway, I have no dog in the fight other than the desire to see the facts presented. In this world of false sources and rewriting history, it's a relief to have someone else care about what facts really mean. So, thank you again! Katherine311MH (talk) 15:14, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Katherine311MH: Glad to help - I like the challenge of unraveling the narrative. You might add some info to Youfit about the fact that they seem to have been started as a spinoff of Planet Fitness, with the first few locations converted from Planet Fitness franchises. And there's no logo - do you know how to add one? It's good experience to have. TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 19:40, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that's what got me interested too. Especially because the links etc kept getting deleted. Intrigue!

I've put photos in; I'll research to see if the logos are easier. Thanks for the ideas!Katherine311MH (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 23:50, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Adopt-A-User - my hopes for its future[edit]

Hi Tim. Following up on your post at the Teahouse about the Adopt - a -User programme, that new user gap, as I understand it, was once filled solely by WP:AAU. But nowadays, with the evolution of other help fora, new users are, for the most part, far better served by WP:HD and WP:TH. I have been gently working towards the Adoption scheme moving away from being seen as 'new user' support (which we do well at the Teahouse) and towards intermediate user support (or 'committed new user' might be a better term).

See this discussion for an outline of my very slow-burn aspiration, in which we re-purpose AAU, and take it off the new user welcome templates, get rid of the 'adopt me' templates that new users pointlessly put on their pages, and then promote Adoption to the right type of user from WP:HD and WP:TH and other venues (such as certain help and guidance pages). It would become a means of giving one-to-one support for those users whose current Wikipedia editing would be improved by greater understanding of our working practices, but who are already able to show they have some broad editing experience under their belt. It would avoid POV editors, and those totally new users who clearly have no intention to stick around, from wasting the time of adopters. These adopters would be better off supporting those they can see already know the basics, but would now benefit from a period of more intensive or focussed guidance. It would meet the needs of those who have more tricky, and perhaps involved or long-term, questions that they might feel they can't ask at the Teahouse/Help desk. One example here. I did do a draft reworking of the AAU text some while ago, but haven't changed anything on the page as yet as it's going to take some long term commitment to steer it through, and gaining a bit of broad support. But AAU is regarded as having been in the doldrums for the last 8 to 10 years, and some of the old hands, like Swarm, seem keen to let someone have a go at reworking it. (I'm just not going to rush it, though, and still need to do find time to do more planning work on it). So, I hope you didn't think I was trying to tell you off in any way; I'm just keen that was, as Teahouse Hosts, don't AAU is a panacea, or mislead new editors by pushing them towards something that really won't meet their needs, and which will result in disappointment for them. Cheers, Nick Moyes (talk) 22:57, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Nick Moyes: Thanks for the background. Sounds like the best onboarding process is to recommend users do the Wikipedia adventure, and then people who want to keep going can go to Help:Getting started, followed by the Wikipedia:Community portal. And of course if they get stuck go to the Teahouse or Help Desk. TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 23:01, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I hope I never evolve into using that particular jargonese term (LOL) but, yes, that sounds logical. When we start to see clearly able questioners asking complex things at the Teahouse, that's probably the time to suggest they might find Adoption ideal for them. This is only my view of course, but I genuinely think that's the way to go. Nick Moyes (talk) 23:06, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

You are receiving this message because you are invited to take part at Wikipedia:Advice for newcomers where you can provide advice that will help our newcomers in the future. It is not a discussion forum, just a place where you say what advice would be helpful to our future editors. I would like to get at least 100 editors to take part in this so please feel free to spread the word to other editors as well. I look forward to seeing what you say to newcomers. Huge thanks[edit]

I wanted to thank you for your response to my request for advice on my first draft article. I will definitely put the time in to be sure I produce the best work that I can, knowing that at this point in my level of experience I will probably fall short of perfection, but it's a great learning experience for what, hopefully, will be many more. Of course, I am continuing to do some edits and clean up work on other articles, I am learning more as I go along. I wanted to let you know, I do have content to add to the extra section heading that are currently empty or short. I have a lot of information, that hopefully, proves the notability of the individual that I'm writing about, James Ewing. I'm still adding content to some of the other sections, I find it helpful to skip around when I hit a wall and need to mull a bit.I When I finish, I will be sure to edit out some of the written information that may be redundant and unnecessary. Again, thanks very much, hopefully, if it's accepted, I can share it with you. I appreciate your mentoring.😁 Best Mollifiednow (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 02:17, 28 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Tim![edit]

hey i'm Ard-Na-Ri i'was referred to you by someone in the Online Geniuses slack group for article creation. I'm not sure how this works exactly, sorry, but was looking for some advice on getting a page created for a company, if you have any advice on how to best go about this I'd appreciate it thank you so much! Ard-Na-Ri (talk) 23:16, 7 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ard-Na-Ri - I'm not familar with Online Geniuses, but I'll give you the same advice I give to everyone at the help desk and teahouse. Creating an article is one of the hardest things to do on Wikipedia. There used to be a way for people to propose articles, but because of the large backlog and resultant frustration, it looks like the link has been changed to direct people to the Article Creation wizard. If you have a conflict of interest and are comneected to the company, it's recommended that you not try to write an article - it will only likely be rejected. See Wikipedia:Conflict of interest. If you're not connected, and want to learn to edit, I recommend you first visit Wikipedia:The Wikipedia Adventure to learn basic editing. Then you can take a shot at a draft. It's a good skill to have and we always need more editors. This will also help Help:Your first article. Then you can go to Wikipedia:Articles for creation and give it a shot. There should be at least 8-10 good sources of independent media coverage, including at least 2 indepth profiles. You should be able to write a good article without having to use any information the company writes about itself. But feel free to ping me again if you're not sure if the company is notable enough, so you don't waste your time. Good luck! TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 00:10, 8 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

BellSoft article[edit]

Dear Tim!

Once upon a time you noticed some issues in the atricle Azul Systems which is similar to the article BellSoft, which I am creating now. BellSoft is a company developing Liberica JDK, one of OpenJDK-based Java SE implementations.

May I ask you to take a look at my sandbox? I prepared a draft of the article there and wish to ensure that it is as good as possible. I appreciate your advice on how to improve the article. Thank you!

Hi Philip Torchinsky - discussion moved to User talk:Philip Torchinsky/sandbox. TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 19:27, 9 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Timtempleton, an article on Broadbean that you created back in 2011 seems to have fallen into an unfortunate state, lacking substantive, independent references. Are you aware of any sources that might show that the company meets NCORP? – Teratix 09:21, 13 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Teratix: One of my first articles - a blast from the past. It does need better sourcing. Let me hunt for some more sources. They were bought by CareerBuilder which is now owned by Apollo Global Management. The site is still up so they kept the Broadbean name and are likely still a standalone business. TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 18:30, 13 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Teratix: - I cleaned it up and added some recent news. let me know what you think. TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 22:50, 15 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Inline images[edit]

Hi! It’s me, NonPopularPerson from the Images, emojis query. What I mean is, how do you make an image small so it looks like it’s part of text? — Preceding unsigned comment added by NonPopularPerson (talkcontribs) 17:14, 19 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@NonPopularPerson: I'm not sure how that would work. You'd have to upload a very small (maybe 5pixel x 5pixel?) image and then play around with it in your sandbox to see if you can get the text to wrap properly. The sandbox link is at the top right menu bar. (Please remember to sign your posts on talk pages by typing four keyboard tildes like this: ~~~~. I think I got it now. I can just view a page on what I’m talking about, then, view the source edit, then , copy the [i dont know what its called], then, voila. Size of navigation popups[edit]

make Navigation Popup Pictures Bigger + load faster How does one make Navigation Pop up Pictures bigger? the reference tooltip preview has loads bigger pictures but it cuts offs the Introduction of a new hyperlink Topic

The Navigation Pop up feature can be better if it loads faster pop ups seems to not cut off the intro of a new topic — Preceding unsigned comment added by Vibrato3 (talkcontribs) 02:23, 26 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Bob Snyder (musician)[edit]

If you made an improvement in the article (and thanks for that) you should go to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Bob Snyder (musician) and say you want to keep it, because why would you have improved an article that was only going to be deleted?— Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 16:58, 26 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Vchimpanzee: I improve articles all the time without passing judgment on the subject’s notability. Sometimes while trying to improve an article, I may determine that there are insufficient sources to preserve it, which is what happened with Bob Snyder’s article. TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 19:40, 26 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, you already !voted. Then why did you make improvements?— Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 19:49, 26 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Vchimpanzee: in the interest of being fair, I hate to see articles be deleted if they’re badly written or done by novice users. The decision should be based on notability, not the appearance of the article. By improving them I give them a fighting chance, but it doesn’t change my vote in this case. TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 19:57, 26 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I was relatively new and didn't know about proper sourcing, but I have access to more sources now. I don't know whether you saw my new sources because not just anyone can. But the fact remains I created the article because I wanted to know more about the man who every Saturday night was a featured artist on Joe Lacina's national radio show. Every Saturday at 11 Eastern, I would hear his clarinet and the words "Bob Snyder time". And during that part of the show, "Amazing Grace" was played. Anyone hearing that show would perceive that Snyder was notable even if Wikipedia's rules about the concept are strange.— Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 20:13, 26 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Vchimpanzee: - It is usually recommended that you discuss at the talk page and add the three sources you think are the best. Then the voters can review and decide. Right now, the sourcing doesn't demonstrate notability. This isn't a strange rule - this is the best way to do this in a way that can be verified, versus violating WP:OR.
