Wow, and another FA (this one) and another TFA, Kyriakos Pittakis, "about another Ephor General of Greece. Where Kavvadias was a bureaucrat, professionaliser and master politician, Pittakis... wasn't. This story involves revolution, forgery, academic intrigue and at least two cases where Pittakis was almost killed by the ancient monuments he obsessively loved. Pittakis is not a wonderfully documented subject: barring a few book chapters, very few biographical works have been written about him. May well be: the reason I put that translation in in the first place was that I couldn't immediately work out what it meant, and then I remembered it from Medea, where she says πᾶς δόμος ἔρροι ("may his whole house go to ruin"). It seems to be fairly common (and fairly strong) in the optative for Euripides, but as far as I can see nobody else seems to use it in that mood (which surely must weight the scales a bit as to whether it's popping up the eighth century...). Did wonder whether "Nestor's cup can go to hell" wouldn't be a good rendering, but probably best to defer to the professionals.

Hi - yes, you should. I normally get that error when my internet connection isn't very good: it might be something like that rather than a permissions error? Otherwise, perhaps try making edits to other pages first: if some of those work, give it another go?

OK: there's a few steps here to getting it ready for publication. This might seem like quite a lot: do please let me know if I can explain anything in more detail.
The first question is the most important: can you prove that the article meets the criteria to be included on Wikipedia at all? The issue here is our various notability guidelines, which set out the rules for what can and can't have a page on this site. For biographies of academics, your best bet is usually to show either of three things:
At the moment, I'm not seeing any of these in the article, which means it's worth thinking about whether it's the right time to write it at all: if it doesn't pass one of these criteria, it's likely to be nominated for deletion and removed. There are plenty of people who are doing great things and will have articles, but simply haven't yet received enough coverage in published sources for us to write an article about them. I'd suggest looking at this as your first priority: if/when you can put together enough evidence to clear that bar, it would be worth thinking in more depth about how to write the article. In the section "Big Ten Conference" the newly edited post said Michigan leads the series 61-51-6, while after I checked, that 61 wins went back before 1918 Big Ten Conference match up (Michigan has 12 wins and 2 ties before 1918 game). I was just wondering, which one is the correct information?

If you're not sure which one is right, the best place to raise discussions about content is on the article's talk page: in this case that's Talk:Michigan–Ohio State football rivalry. It will help if you can show where you found the new information. If however there is material in the article that isn't cited to anything, and which is contradicted by a reliable, independent, published secondary source, you can just go ahead and make the change, adding in a citation (the best way to do that is to use ref tags, <ref>information about the source</ref>) to show the evidence on which the correct information is based. I've used {{User:MiszaBot/config | algo = old(15d) | archive = User talk:Eddie891/Archive %(counter)d | counter = 20| maxarchivesize = 260K | archiveheader = {{Automatic archive navigator}} | minthreadstoarchive = 1| minthreadsleft = 12}} for ages, and it has served to automatically archive well enough for me. If you check out User:MiszaBot/config there's some sample code to use. So that I've understood this right: you made all the changes but wanted to leave an edit summary? If that's the case, you can make a "dummy edit" (add a space at the end of the article, which will be ignored by the system) and put the summary there, indicating that it applies to the previous edit. This distinctive style encompassed the arrangement of skeletal structures; His artistic contributions included; Notably, his illustrations were featured; He later passed away; Dufy's final resting place; he was laid to rest near the artist Henri Matisse. My antennae are up for AI generated prose. Got it, I understand the AI worry. I just thought that those extra parts sort of accommodated the information in a less biased way. Something about the way it was originally written seemed not impartial. But I guess it comes with the territory of writing about art. Like the article used a lot of classifying words without in-line citations, so I wanted to work around that. Ludensg (talk) 15:28, 1 December 2023 (UTC)
However, I don't understand why you reversed my edit that changed this sentence: "By 1950, his ability to paint was diminished when his hands were impaired by rheumatoid arthritis and he had to fasten a brush to his hand to work. " I still think my version read way more clearly: "By 1950, his abilities were affected by rheumatoid arthritis, leading to adaptations in his painting method (mainly the fastening of a brush to his hand)" Ludensg (talk) 15:32, 1 December 2023 (UTC)
Given the number of problematic revisions, it's preferable in such cases to do a mass reversion rather than cherry-pick. Per that specific sentence, the original version is more direct. I've made something of a compromise edit: the original paragraph on La Fée Electricité was, I suspect, the main reason for the tone template, and I think Ludensg's edits there did represent a significant improvement. As alluded to here, there definitely are good aspects of that series of edits which can be pulled back out, though it would be good to see some sources brought in now to back up what has been written. There are a few situations in which creating a second account is fine: those include when you've lost the password to your original account (though you should put a link to that account on your user page, and consider making its user page redirect to your new one). As long as you don't use the two accounts in a way that implies that they're two people (for instance, voting twice in a discussion, using one to review the work of the other, and so on), it's absolutely fine. Hello! Most people start off their editing by working to improve existing pages: there can be a little bit of a learning curve in picking up the house style and how the Wiki software works.
If/when you do decide to create a new article from scratch, the place to go is Articles for Creation, where you can write it as a draft, receive help on it and have it reviewed for publication when it's ready. First of all, you will need to work out whether the person it is about meets our various notability guidelines, which set out the rules for what can and can't have a page on this site. For biographies of academics, your best bet is usually to show either of three things:
If the article's subject doesn't pass one of these criteria, it's likely to be nominated for deletion and removed. There are plenty of people who are doing great things and will have articles, but simply haven't yet received enough coverage in published sources for us to write an article about them. If the article's subject is a woman, the Women in Red project might be interested in helping out -- they do a lot of work creating new articles on previously-unrecognised women. Hi, I came across your page from the Temple of Apollo Palatinus edit history and I must say, I am amazed at the level of edits you have made. Personally I've been very interested in Greek & Roman topics, archaeology in particular, but never had access to the required resources. Hello again UC. Promised to keep L Truss's article up to date with new sources and a new one's come out (albeit two months ago). Per Amazon it seems to have generally good reviews but since it's by Ben Riley-Smith (writer at the Telegraph) worried it might be a bit one-sided and journo. To me, the "quality" of the source has to match what it's used to support. If R-S is a remotely respectable journalist, and he gives us e.g. the date of a certain meeting or some other fairly uncontroversial and pedestrian fact, I'd see no problem with using his work. It might be that he's notable enough in his own right to use as a source for views of Truss (his own, most obviously, but also potentially those of people he interviewed). However, the more extraordinary and controversial the claim, the more robust the evidence needs to be -- if he's purporting to have some explosive, closed-door testimony that nobody else ever heard, that is probably a bridge too far. Émile Gilliéron

Hi there. I just uploaded some photos taken in Munich this past summer of plaster casts of Acropolis korai painted by Gilliéron père et fils. They were among the casts purchased from the Gilliérons by the Metropolitan Museum in New York (Conte mentions them briefly in Mertens and Conte 2019, p. 30), and when the Met decided to get rid of them they passed to the Museum für Abgüsse Klassischer Bildwerke, München, on more or less permanent loan. The paint is based on the watercolors and painted photographs that Gilliéron père made for Russell Sturgis and Edward Robinson in the 1880s, when the korai were fresh out of the ground. It occurred to me that you might find one or two of them useful as illustrations for the Gilliéron article, which I see you have nominated for GA. At the moment, all the images in the article are of Bronze Age stuff, mostly from Knossos, which is understandable, given the amount of restoration they did there and its lasting influence on the way the site is seen today. But it does create a somewhat unbalanced and one-sided view of their work. Anyway, if you're interested, you'll find them at c:Category:Painted casts of Acropolis korai by Émile Gilliéron and son. Re the dates of the casts: the website of the Cast Museum in Munich notwithstanding, I think these probably belong to the early years of the 20th century, not the end of the 19th. Mertens and Conte (p. 8) suggest that the Met only began acquiring stuff from the Gilliérons in 1906, and it's no coincidence that this was immediately after Edward Robinson, who had been dealing with Gilliéron since the 1880s, and was responsible for the polychromy exhibitions at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston in the 1890s, moved from Boston to the Met in 1905. Mertens and Conte (p. 30 with p. 46, note 7) also cite correspondence about the korai between Richter and the Gilliérons in 1911 and 1912. Presumably the Met has records that provide a precise date of acquisition for each of them, but I would frankly be astonished if they were before 1900, and without confirmed dates I think it's best to rely on the general chronology suggested by Mertens and Conte, since they have obviously been working in the archives. The Cast Museum in Munich has none of the original records for these pieces and the description on their web site is a much more general one; I don't think you should rely on it for close dating of any of the material it inherited from the Met. (Full disclosure: my wife has been working on Robinson and the nexus of artists involved in the study of Greek polychromy in the 1890s for several years now, and one of the main reasons we went to Munich last summer was so that she could get a look at this material.) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Choliamb (talk • contribs) 14:32, 31 December 2023 (UTC)
I'm sure all that is correct -- purely from a Wiki point of view, I'm not sure if/how we can make use of it, though. We've got a source which is, at least in theory, reliable, secondary and all the rest of it: meanwhile, even if the Met acquired them in the 1900s, that doesn't contradict the Munich suggestion that they were made (presumably) in the late 1890s -- unless we are absolutely certain that they were made to order and that the 1911/1912 correspondence predates that manufacture. Certainly, the Gilliérons often worked to commission, but they also made reproductions independently and then tried to sell them.
It's not a major problem for Commons, but I'm uncomfortable changing a cited fact in the article to an uncited one that contradicts what is currently our only source. Is there anything published (perhaps from Mrs. Choliamb?) that would allow us to use that later date by explicitly saying "these casts were probably made after 1900"? As far as I can see, you have two sources, not one, and you can choose which one to follow: Mertens and Conte, based on meticulous research in the Met archives, or the Munich cast museum web site, a general puff piece ("Die Gipsabgüsse einiger dieser Koren sind wahre Eyecatcher!") with no scholarly pretensions. Mertens and Conte clearly imply that the Met did not acquire these casts until the early 20th century, and the cast museum in Munich does not have access to independent information about them unavailable to the Met. But as you say, it's not impossible that the casts themselves were created in the 1890s and then sat around waiting to find a buyer (and of course the casts as physical objects have a different creation date from the painted decoration that was applied to them after manufacture, so someone who wanted to stir the pot might point out that there are three possible dates in play here, not just two). There's no way to know for sure without going into the Met archives, and since my wife is chiefly interested in the polychromy exhibitions of the 1890s and Robinson's time in Boston, the precise date of these particular casts is not something that she has been motivated to track down. I could ask our niece who works at the Met to try to do that for me, but even if I did, and she was successful, you still wouldn't be able to use the product of her original research in the WP article, and it still wouldn't address your point about a possible delay between creation and acquisition. Because of your reservatons, I have redated all of the Commons pages for these photos from "ca. 1900–1910" to "ca. 1890–1910" to leave the question a little more open, but I'm not prepared to go any further than that. As for the Wikipedia article, you'll just have do as seems best to you. Believe me when I say it does not matter a jot to me one way or the other, so if you prefer to stick with the late 19th century, I will not be offended (and in the larger scheme of things it won't make any difference to readers or change their understanding of Gilliéron's career). Hello -- is that this draft article? I notice you've already done the right thing and put it through AfC -- User:Timothytyy has provided what I would hope is a clear explanation of why we can't move the article into mainspace. Essentially, it's not clear from the references provided that this person meets the criteria required to publish an article on a cricketer: in general, this means having played internationally, or at the highest senior domestic level in a major cricketing nation. As I understand from what's in the article, Disisto hasn't yet done either of those things, so this seems to be a case where we have to wait until his career develops further to be able to write an article on him. That's no slight on him or the article itself: it's simply a matter of the criteria Wikipedia has for the articles it hosts. I think the change should be reverse to my last revision, which has been undone, as I think it's relevant information given the context (its not original research). If no consensus can be reached on the talk page, there are a few options. If only two editors are involved, you might try a WP:THIRDOPINION, which is a means of getting an uninvolved editor to take a look and give a view: it might be possible for both of you currently involved to agree to defer to whatever they decide. Alternatively, there is a formal process to seek wider consensus, which again may or may not be useful.
Ultimately and sometimes frustratingly, there is no way of calling in an authoritative judgement on a matter of content: in general, editors are reasonably people and consensus can be reached (even if that means ending up on a solution that nobody is totally happy with, but everyone can live with), but it is sometimes the case that it cannot, and here sometimes the only thing to do is find another article. Interesting stuff -- you've certainly gone to the key source (Liddell and Scott) that I would have. What you write sounds eminently plausible. I did find page 97 of this one, which pushes the "popular idea" back a bit: the Greeks (or at least Strabo) also thought there was a connection between arrows and the river Tigris, and the Romans (or at least Varro) thought that extended to the animal as well. Lots of proposals remain open for discussion, and the current round of review looks to be on a good track towards making significant progress towards improving RfA's structure and environment. I'd like to give my heartfelt thanks to everyone who has given us their idea for change to make RfA better, and the same to everyone who has given the necessary feedback to improve those ideas. The following proposals remain open for discussion:

  • Proposal 2, initiated by HouseBlaster, provides for the addition of a text box at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship reminding all editors of our policies and enforcement mechanisms around decorum.
  • Proposals 3 and 3b, initiated by Barkeep49 and Usedtobecool, respectively, provide for trials of discussion-only periods at RfA. The first would add three extra discussion-only days to the beginning, while the second would convert the first two days to discussion-only.
  • Proposal 5, initiated by SilkTork, provides for a trial of RfAs without threaded discussion in the voting sections.
  • Proposals 6c and 6d, initiated by BilledMammal, provide for allowing users to be selected as provisional admins for a limited time through various concrete selection criteria and smaller-scale vetting.

  • Proposal 14, initiated by Kusma, provides for the creation of some minimum suffrage requirements to cast a vote.
  • Proposals 16 and 16c, initiated by Thebiguglyalien and Soni, respectively, provide for community-based admin desysop procedures. 16 would desysop where consensus is established in favor at the administrators' noticeboard; 16c would allow a petition to force reconfirmation.

  • Proposal 17, initiated by SchroCat, provides for "on-call" admins and 'crats to monitor RfAs for decorum.

  • Proposal 24, initiated by SportingFlyer, provides for a more robust alternate version of the optional candidate poll.

Hello - the easiest way is normally to go into source editing mode and add ref tags: write <ref>YOUR CITATION HERE</ref>, replacing the middle bit with information about the source. There are some more creative things you can do later on, but that should work: most articles are fairly unfussy about the format as long as it's obvious where you got it from, and another editor could go and check that reference with the information you've provided. The statue is of Hildegard of Bingen, and as it happens, her Physica is on the Main page today, and Marian Anderson as my top story (by NBC, 1939), and below (on my talk) three people with raised arms (a player in the rock band with the "rock abbot, a large wooden sculpture of Jesus behind a church altar made by handicapped people, and the conductor of the Youth Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine, - and the place is the cherry blossom in Frauenstein

...is back! This time at FAC; if you have either time or inclination to pop in, it would be most welcome. I went through your PR comments after closing it down a month or so ago, and hope I have done them justice. The only area where I drew a blank was in going through Vout's works. All are fascinating in their own right, but while she refers to the collections of Witt, Townley, et al, there is nothing about the Secretum which I can work in, unfortunately.
