Stephens City (Part 3)

Got a question for ya. Once the Stephens City article reaches GA status. What do I do next? I have never reached this high on Wikipedia, so I really don't know what the next step is. Do I immediately take it to FA and ask for review? Do I work on it some more? I modeled the article after FA grade article Minneapolis, so I feel it has a bit of FA-ness to it already, but that is just my opinion. But I am not sure what to do next once I get GA. - NeutralHomerTalk • 21:25, 30 May 2010 (UTC)

I would look at other town/city articles at WP:FA and get pointers from them, both as to format and writing. Once you think it meets that standard, take it to WP:PR. You'll get good advice there as to whether it is ready for FA.--Wehwalt (talk) 03:16, 31 May 2010 (UTC)
Actually, I got a peer review before going to GA. That is how I got some of the help for the article. I modeled the article after Minneapolis for the setup and layout. Some of the sections and what not. I also modeled it after Washington, DC (I think that is just a GA, though not sure, but still). I could go to PR again for FA (so many abbrevs), but I don't know if I would get anymore information than before. - NeutralHomerTalk • 03:21, 31 May 2010 (UTC)
By the way, here is the link to the PR. - NeutralHomerTalk • 03:22, 31 May 2010 (UTC)
I will look it over. Let's see what GA comments there are. I would also look over a couple of other city articles, concentrating on recent promotions if possible.--Wehwalt (talk) 03:37, 31 May 2010 (UTC)
Okie Dokie. I am still at the bottom of the bin as it comes to the GA review, so that might be a couple days away (hopefully not long). I will keep you updated on how that goes so you can take that into consideration as well. Take Care...NeutralHomerTalk • 03:40, 31 May 2010 (UTC)

Clarification

Regarding [1] (which I just noticed now after it being pointed out), I thought I should clarify in case I wasn't clear in my answer to your question: Giano didn't ask for or mention rollback or anything of the sort - I simply restored it of my own volition. As such, you may wish to revisit the second sentence of your comment. Best regards, –xenotalk 12:47, 31 May 2010 (UTC)

I nowhere said he did. However, you presumably would not voluntarily grant rollback to a person who should not have it. Giano proved to be such a person, for reasons which go way beyond his misuse of rollback. I've called him a net negative to the project, because of his insulting comments, which certainly aren't attracting people to the project. I firmly believe that. I'll let the comment stand.--Wehwalt (talk) 12:57, 31 May 2010 (UTC)
Xeno's RfB is not the right place to make off-topic insults about Giano. Giano has also expressed a wish to have the comment removed, unless it's relevant to the RfB (and you seem to say above that it isn't) I see no reason for it to remain, since he takes it as a personal attack. You may also be interested in the thread at the bottom of User talk:GiacomoReturned - Kingpin13 (talk) 13:02, 31 May 2010 (UTC)
The last time I checked, Giano was not prevented by any restrictions from posting here. Nothing need come between his mouth and my ears. Or the textual equivalent.--Wehwalt (talk) 13:07, 31 May 2010 (UTC)

User:CamrynRocks! looking to start a page on her school. Think you could provide some guidance?

Recently, Camryn contacted me about writing a page on her school, asking for some guidance. I told her that I'm not very active lately due to my travels, but that you were an accomplished article writer who might be willing to assist her. It doesn't seem like it will take too much time or research, as it will probably start out as a stub- or C-class article. Think you might be able to find a couple of minutes to go over some advice with her and maybe point her towards some decent sources, give her some formatting tips, and the like?

Thanks, Throwaway85 (talk) 19:09, 31 May 2010 (UTC)

I've given her advice. Look for an article on another school, make it like that, ask the school librarian and principal for help. I think she's just casting her net widely hoping for online help. I've promised to keep an eye on the article and edit it as needed. But I don't want to write it for her, that isn't fair to her.--Wehwalt (talk) 19:11, 31 May 2010 (UTC)

WikiCup 2010 May newsletter

We are half way through round 3, with a little under a month to go. The current overall leader is Hungary Sasata (submissions), who has 570 points. He leads pool C. Pools A, B and D are led by Pennsylvania Hunter Kahn (submissions), Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) and White Shadows (submissions) respectively. Anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.

Two of last year's final 8, Sweden Theleftorium (submissions) and Iceland Scorpion0422 (submissions), have dropped out of the competition, saying they would rather their place went to someone who will have more time on their hands than them next round. On a related note, a special thank you goes to White Shadows (submissions) for his help behind the scenes once again. There is currently a problem with the poster, perhaps caused by the new skin- take a look at this discussion and see if you can help. The competition has continued to tick over well with minimal need for judge intervention, so thank you to everyone making that possible. Good luck to all! A Userbox

With your help, together we brought the Stephens City, Virginia article to Good Article status. May I be the first to award you the following userbox and thank you for helping me on this article. I look forward to working with you in the future as I move the article closer to Featured Article status.

Again....Thank You! :) - NeutralHomerTalk • 23:47, 31 May 2010 (UTC)

Move Request

Hi Wehwalt. I was wondering if you could assist me in a moving Daniel Kennedy Knott to Dan Knott, as Dan Knott is the more common name of Knott. If you could create the redir (Dan Knott) and move Daniel Kennedy Knott to Dan Knott and leave a redirect behind, that;d be great. Thanks, and I'll see you around. Connormah (talk | contribs) 01:44, 1 June 2010 (UTC)

Thanks, it is much appreciated! Connormah (talk | contribs) 04:10, 1 June 2010 (UTC)
No problem. Glad to help.--Wehwalt (talk) 05:33, 1 June 2010 (UTC)

Independent Review Request on Stephens City, Virginia

Hello, I am awaiting an official peer review, but was told by a FAC delegate to get as many people looking at the page as possible. The page just received GA status today. At your earliest convenience, could you take a look at the Stephens City, Virginia page and review it (placing it on the page's talk page or mine is fine) independent of the official peer review. I would open to any and all requests during the review. Thanks...NeutralHomerTalk • 05:38, 1 June 2010 (UTC)

I am planning to do go over it for MOS compliance, don't worry. I would suggest asking User:Brianboulton to participate in the peer review. I also plan to start looking for more references and generally beef it up if I can, I'm thinking there must be WashPost coverage of the place.--Wehwalt (talk) 05:42, 1 June 2010 (UTC)
Excellent. I will message Brianboulton with the request as well. Not sure if we ever made the Post. I know nearby Winchester and Front Royal have a couple times. Not sure if we got Post coverage when that guy blew his house up or not. I know it made the DC TV stations (they had live trucks and choppers out for it). But if you can find it, please add all you can. :) - NeutralHomerTalk • 05:45, 1 June 2010 (UTC)
It may take me a little time, but I will do it.--Wehwalt (talk) 05:50, 1 June 2010 (UTC)
Okie Dokie. I had just forgotten to add you to the couple people I had messaged about reviewing the article. The FAC delegate said having a few people review it is a good idea...hence my messaging several. Take your time, I don't see this going to FAC anytime soon. Take Care...NeutralHomerTalk • 05:53, 1 June 2010 (UTC)
It is. My reviews tend to concentrate on prose and MOS compliance. Other reviewers look at other things. It is very helpful to get multiple feedback. I will probably be nominating my next article at FAC, 1975 Australian constitutional crisis over the weekend, should be interesting.--Wehwalt (talk) 06:06, 1 June 2010 (UTC)
The FAC delegate also told me to watch how a FAC goes, so let me know when you do put it up on FAC and I will watch the process. - NeutralHomerTalk • 06:10, 1 June 2010 (UTC)
I will. It is late in the stages of peer review; I will close it once Brian is done with his comments and start the FAC. I got Gough Whitlam back to FA and this is designed to squeeze a second FA out of the same books!--Wehwalt (talk) 06:14, 1 June 2010 (UTC)
Wow, nicely done. Two FA candidates from a series of books, that is good work. :) I would like to see Newtown-Stephensburg Historic District (located in Stephens City) taken to GA and then FA as well. That is my next project after Stephens City. I have got the writing bug big time. :) - NeutralHomerTalk • 06:19, 1 June 2010 (UTC)
Routine. After I got John Diefenbaker to FA, I then did Canadian federal election, 1957. I have five Nixon-related FAs all from the same basic set of references (with some additional ones for specific articles). Planning on revamping Nixon and getting it to FA this summer, though that is controversial and may take multiple attempts. Worth doing though. Yes, sounds like a plan on the Historic District. The writing bug is easy to get if you can write here, it is so worth doing. I believe Wikipedia, perhaps in a different form, will long outlast us.--Wehwalt (talk) 06:24, 1 June 2010 (UTC)

I think that too. Especially with all the many articles we have here. I think it might grow too large and have to be broken up (ala Ma Bell) with a Wiki for Histories, one for Media (TV, radio, newspapers, etc.) and so on, but at present, I don't see that as necessary. I have a couple articles I would like to create on other historic buildings in Stephens City. Some that date back to the early 1800s and tie them into the two articles presently about Stephens City. I also would like to see some of these buildings (not just in Stephens City, but Winchester too) on the National Registry of Historic Places, but am unsure how to go about that. - NeutralHomerTalk • 06:31, 1 June 2010 (UTC)

  • I am seeing you are having some image issues on your FAC. Do you think they would request my images on the Stephens City page (I took them all) go through OTRS? - NeutralHomerTalk • 03:12, 4 June 2010 (UTC)
I tend to doubt it. I think Fasach Nua is concerned because the images are from 1975 and yet they are uploaded and licensed by the photographer. There's an image of the photographer on his user page, the age seems to fit, he looks to be in his fifties. Hopefully Tirin is active right now and will cooperate. If there remains a problem I will defend the images on AGF grounds.--Wehwalt (talk) 03:28, 4 June 2010 (UTC)
Okie Dokie...just wanted to make sure. Cause personally, I wouldn't mind going through OTRS to register my pictures, but wasn't sure if I had to. Thanks and Good Luck! - NeutralHomerTalk • 03:41, 4 June 2010 (UTC)
My concern is that Tirin might be inactive. I'm sure he will either cooperate or weigh in if he is active, and both would be good enough. Your images do not present a problem, they are recent. It just goes to show, expect the unexpected at FAC. There is nothing insurmountable about Fasach Nua's concern, faced with losing the FAC I would delete the images and put in a PD image of Fraser and Parliament House. However, these images are clearly better.--Wehwalt (talk) 03:51, 4 June 2010 (UTC)
Feel free to keep asking questions. If I feel it is a sensitive subject, I might respond by email.--Wehwalt (talk) 03:52, 4 June 2010 (UTC)
Will do. If I see anything pop up that I have a question on, I will let you know. Emails are always welcome. - NeutralHomerTalk • 04:03, 4 June 2010 (UTC)

NYT archives

I don't know if you remember me, but I remember you... And I'm wondering if you can check if Ivar Hippe is mentioned in the The New York Times Archives. If you can, your help is greatly appreciated. --TIAYN (talk) 13:46, 6 June 2010 (UTC)

Anyone can search the archives. It is just subscribers who can access the post 1923 articles.--Wehwalt (talk) 22:52, 9 June 2010 (UTC)
Okay, question... are you a subscriber? Cause I'm not going to pay for the NYT archives when I'm only going to read one article. --TIAYN (talk) 16:52, 10 June 2010 (UTC)
Yes, I am, but I can't copy and paste because it shows up as an image. I can certainly get quotes for you though.--Wehwalt (talk) 16:59, 10 June 2010 (UTC)

Natalee Holloway#2010 charges in the United States

Hi Wehwalt, all the editorial trimming on the article made sense except the last merging of two sentences -- since the actual criminal complaint filed with the court (the PDFs that I could find) did not go into detail of the cash payment, I felt it best that the two portions of the alleged payoff were left separate. KimChee (talk) 22:40, 9 June 2010 (UTC)

Your new edit looks fine, and I'll keep your advice in mind about the length of the article. KimChee (talk) 22:43, 9 June 2010 (UTC)
That is fine. This is (so far), peripheral to the NH investigation. I am more interested in hearing about the results of the searches they are supposedly going to run on Aruba then on hearing the denominations of the cash that JDS allegedly received. Thank you for your contributions. I am still concerned over that image. When I get a chance I will probably nom it for deletion.--Wehwalt (talk) 22:46, 9 June 2010 (UTC)

An excellent article, Wehwalt, and a very interesting read. SlimVirgin talk contribs 01:08, 10 June 2010 (UTC)

Agreeing with SV, a fascinating article. I just wish the option of trial by battle had been still in place when I was in court recently for allegedly going through a red light. Malleus Fatuorum 01:35, 10 June 2010 (UTC)
High praise indeed. I agree, I would bring it back in divorce cases to start with, and go on from there.--Wehwalt (talk) 01:38, 10 June 2010 (UTC)

I would like concurrence that the NFCC violation at Joran van der Sloot is blatant before I revert it again.—Kww(talk) 17:45, 10 June 2010 (UTC)

I asked User:Fasach Nua to look at the situation but not sure he's been on yet.--Wehwalt (talk) 17:57, 10 June 2010 (UTC)
I just know that justified or not, Weakopedia is going to have me at WP:AN3 if I revert again.—Kww(talk) 18:08, 10 June 2010 (UTC)
So don't. Ask for other admins to look at the situation. Surely displaying a copyright image to tens of thousands of editors when we shouldn't be is worthy of admin notice?--Wehwalt (talk) 18:13, 10 June 2010 (UTC)
I thought you qualified as another admin.—Kww(talk) 18:23, 10 June 2010 (UTC)
I do, but I think I"m "involved".--Wehwalt (talk) 18:24, 10 June 2010 (UTC)
Discussion is at Wikipedia talk:Non-free_content#Review requested of actions at Joran van der Sloot.—Kww(talk) 18:29, 10 June 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, I saw. Response posted. I just think the proponents were careless in their reading, too eager to have the image, and not really listening.--Wehwalt (talk) 18:31, 10 June 2010 (UTC)

Stephens City, Virginia Re-Review

I was wondering if you could re-review this GA review. I am asking as User:Risker has blocked User:Xtzou as a sock of a blocked account. This is a problem for me as Xtzou was my GA Reviewer. Since Xtzou was blocked as a sock, I want to make sure this doesn't void my GA review, hence my request. - NeutralHomerTalk • 21:17, 10 June 2010 (UTC)

I will take a look at it but it might take me a couple of days.--Wehwalt (talk) 21:29, 10 June 2010 (UTC)
Okie Dokie....I just want to make sure there is no question in the future (as I work toward FA) that this is a GA. Thanks for your help. - NeutralHomerTalk • 21:31, 10 June 2010 (UTC)

Joran van der Sloot security video image

I've templated the File:VanDerSloot SecurityVideo.jpg‎ for deletion. I do not consider myself an expert on image policy and so I've asked User:Fasach Nua to comment. He is an expert and regularly knocks out my fair use images from my FACs, much to the gnashing of teeth, so you can be assured he is neutral and uninvolved. Please feel free to ask any other image hawk for their views. And don't take it personally, during the NH FAC we had so many images knocked out that we were wondering if we would have enough left to pass that criterion of WP:WIAFA! You are doing good work generally, you just need to watch a few choices of words and be cautious about summary style. Best, --Wehwalt (talk) 11:30, 10 June 2010 (UTC)

Thanks, the outside input is welcomed. Rather than encourage an edit war by reverting without changes, I'll try a different approach so that the contextual significance can be justified. KimChee (talk) 08:35, 11 June 2010 (UTC)
I do have an additional question regarding one of your comments: if claiming this as a screenshot (which goes to television shows) doesn't apply to this image, what would? I was looking for similar images of newsworthy significance and found the Rodney King screenshot and thought that it would apply in a similar manner. Perhaps you can help me understand this. Thanks. KimChee (talk) 09:01, 11 June 2010 (UTC)

  • Recognizing truth is one thing. How a person chooses to respond to it is another. Love to do Trudeau, but wonder if it would be possible without speaking French.--Wehwalt (talk) 22:01, 12 June 2010 (UTC)
Interesting thought. Trudeau spoke very good English, and, I believe his autobiography is written in English, but there are probably some good French books too. I'd love to see one of the Fathers of Confederation or earlier prime ministers be promoted to FA, like John A. Macdonald, George-Etienne Cartier or Charles Tupper, etc. or what not, but, honestly, writing is not my forte. Connormah (talk | contribs) 22:16, 12 June 2010 (UTC)

Same old, mostly :). I've toned down the signature-making a bit, but I've been mostly surfing the 'pedia, and straightening out templates in articles. I've been also approached about going for adminship again this summer, but though I'm not entirely sure, being asked is surely a good sign that I'm doing something right. :) Connormah (talk | contribs) 22:56, 12 June 2010 (UTC)

Ernest Augustus I of Hanover

Hello, between June 11 & 12 you have made numerous edits to Ernest Augustus I of Hanover, one of which added a reference name of "torme" but without adding a source (meaning, it's a [[broken reference. Because of the number of edits, it would take me a long time to figure out your intent and repair it, could you please revisit and fix it? thanks. - Salamurai (talk) 01:37, 13 June 2010 (UTC)

Image removal

Hi, I understand removal on copyright grounds. Why not the same issue for pictures which come from the IDF? Thanks,--Brendumb (talk) 15:20, 13 June 2010 (UTC)

The same rules apply, of course. Did the IDF take them, do they retain copyright after releasing them? Obviously those are factors.--Wehwalt (talk) 15:41, 13 June 2010 (UTC)
IDF recorded them as event took place and didn't give permission for them to be used. Just wanted a full discussion.--Brendumb (talk) 15:49, 13 June 2010 (UTC)
Well, go have a discussion over in that thread, then.--Wehwalt (talk) 15:59, 13 June 2010 (UTC)

Yes, it is being phased in, see WP:Reviewing. Just making your life a little easier, all those BLP concerns in First World War battleships.--Wehwalt (talk) 15:58, 13 June 2010 (UTC)
Well thank you :) However I fail to actually see what changes are in place right now. If I was without the right, I would not be able to edit certain articles instantly correct? I'd have to wait for approval. So does that mean that this right allowes me to instantly edit these articles or is there something else.....--White Shadows stood on the edge 16:03, 13 June 2010 (UTC)
Frankly, I am not clear on the fine details yet, given that the proposals seemed to keep constantly changing. However, it seems to be important enough so that it's getting handed out fairly broadly and there's a fair size line at the requests for permissions page. It won't hurt you, anyway.--Wehwalt (talk) 16:05, 13 June 2010 (UTC)
Well I'm not very active over at BLP's in general but It will be handy for high-risk pages like WWII ect so thanks. I'll see how this new 2 month trial goes along. I expect it to be fully inplace soon now though as many people will like the fact that there is another "user right" or "badge" for them to claim.....--White Shadows stood on the edge 16:09, 13 June 2010 (UTC)
Yes, I suspect you are right.--Wehwalt (talk) 16:15, 13 June 2010 (UTC)

You're very welcome. I apologize once again for taking so very long. Congrats one last time on the FA. Scartol • Tok 02:35, 15 June 2010 (UTC)

Diefenbaker

Hi! I see you've changed your proposed date for the Diefenbaker article to be featured on the front page from July 1 to August 10. I was just curious as to the reason for the change. I figured it was an outstanding choice for Canada Day, and the new date kinda blows up my thought to have Terry Fox up for Sept 1 - though that part's cool. I could easily have that one wait until the next anniversary of the start of the Marathon of Hope. Resolute 01:12, 16 June 2010 (UTC)

I think it is possible to have both, would anyone think twice of having 2 analagous US articles in 3 weeks? I moved it because Raul ran one of my articles, Ashford v Thornton on June 10 so not nice to have another so soon. Although I didn't ask him to run Ashford, I still think it would be wrong to ask so soon.--Wehwalt (talk) 01:15, 16 June 2010 (UTC)
Ahh, that makes sense. I was thinking in terms of running two Canadian historical persons so soon, though it is all just a matter of phrasing, I suppose - a politician vs a humanitarian. I still believe that Diefenbaker is the best option for July 1 myself, even if Raul ran another of your articles. Your call, of course. Cheers! Resolute 14:58, 16 June 2010 (UTC)
Well, I'll do it then. But I will wait until a June article is not next to be replaced, and I'll explain why I'm doing it.--Wehwalt (talk) 19:49, 16 June 2010 (UTC)

I saw your note about WP:MOS for capitalization, but does that have to apply to titles of links to external news sources? I didn't see anything about capitalization in Wikipedia:Citing sources -- in those cases, I'm copying and pasting the titles as is from the source to be consistent with the source... KimChee (talk) 00:24, 16 June 2010 (UTC)

Ah. Well, in citing article titles, you use lower case except for first word of title and proper nouns. Not sure what provision of the MOS that is from, but it is how it is done.--Wehwalt (talk) 00:40, 16 June 2010 (UTC)

Thank you for your watchful eye on this article. What recommendations do you have for preparing it for review in the future? KimChee (talk) 19:59, 17 June 2010 (UTC)

Nothing immediate except to try to keep it compliant with the Manual of Style and wait for the flood of info to slow down a bit. In a couple of weeks, start thinking about what from the daily updates is no longer needed. It is very detailed, and if Joran's going to be in the news for he foreseeable future, you're going to have to zoom out. Feel free to ask specific questions, on style or substance. Always glad to answer.--Wehwalt (talk) 20:04, 17 June 2010 (UTC)

hoover dam bibliography

Your recent change http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Hoover_Dam&action=historysubmit&diff=368865885&oldid=368843095 will need some further attention, I think.

The Hiltzik reference now has the ISBN number for the Stevens book. If I follow that link I see only a Russian publisher, but that may be just my inexperience looking up book references.

The Stevens reference has the old ISBN for Hiltzik which is invalid. - Mirokado (talk) 21:38, 18 June 2010 (UTC)

Many thanks. I obviously screwed up.--Wehwalt (talk) 21:40, 18 June 2010 (UTC)

I was thinking we might want to consider using it in the more detailed article about Neville's pre PM career, Rise of Neville Chamberlain.--Wehwalt (talk) 16:12, 18 June 2010 (UTC)

My 'additions' (noting underlinings/ink colouring etc and a couple of comments) are readily spotted. Thank you. It was more or less a very tame proceeding. Now I'm going at it again with Hoover Dam, just nominated at FAC. Feel free to watch. Thanks for your help.--Wehwalt (talk) 03:23, 26 June 2010 (UTC)

I have posted a statement of intent on the article's talkpage, and put an "under construction" template on the article itself. I've been looking at it.

  • Good things: a couple of nice images, and some very interesting sound files (Caruso, and Emmy Destinn no less!). There doesn't seem to be much current interest in the article from its former editors.
  • Problem areas: Rather poor sources, virtually nothing cited; lightweight background (History) section; no Reception/performance history section; plot summary pedestrian and far too long. Musical analysis is superficial, no idea where it comes from.

I'm going to spend a bit of time compiling a list of numbers, and I'd like to work on the plot summary a bit before getting stuck into the music analysis. I shall also be looking at the recording history; there have been 250 recordings of the opera, and the discography article lists only a fraction of these. I'm happy for the present to leave the backgound, reception and performing history to you, when you're able to start. No special hurry. Brianboulton (talk) 20:50, 21 June 2010 (UTC)

I am pretty much finishing up Hoover Dam, and will be free in a couple of days. That's a joint venture with NortyNort, btw. Tosca should be fun. Feel free to work on the plot summary, I'll tidy it up if need be. I suspect we'll both wind up patching each other's work.--Wehwalt (talk) 21:17, 21 June 2010 (UTC)
I have started a list of relevant sources - it can be found here. Please add to or comment on any of these. There may well be some useful scholarly articles obtainable on-line. I have yet to do a Google search. Brianboulton (talk) 00:01, 23 June 2010 (UTC)
I've got some books, will add them probably tomorrow. Many thanks.--Wehwalt (talk) 00:15, 23 June 2010 (UTC)
Just to clarify: my note about strategies on the talkpage wasn't aimed at you. I know pretty well what you are doing, have a fair idea of how you work, etc. There are others, however, who want to contribute but whose methods and intentions are less known and who could be a little over-enthusiastic. I'm sorry my progress on he article is seemingly slow, but the synopsis will be in place later today, and I am devoting as much time as I can (in between my FAC review duties which are a pain in the nuts). Brianboulton (talk) 16:50, 25 June 2010 (UTC)
I realize that, we trust each other or we would not be doing this, but as there seems to be more active talk page watchers than we anticipated, it seemed appropriate to lay my cards on the table too. I could not do as many reviews as you do, it feels too much like "work" for me to do too many, whereas writing does not. I've been peeking over your shoulder as you wrote the synopsis, but haven't found much to quibble with once you stopped calling Cavaradossi a libertarian.--Wehwalt (talk) 16:55, 25 June 2010 (UTC)
Thanks, and congratulations on getting Whitlam Mark II past the proctors. If Diefenbaker's boys beat our boys on Sunday, thy cup runneth over. Brianboulton (talk) 08:53, 26 June 2010 (UTC)
Don't worry, I won't mention the score. They'll always be an England--loss on penalty kicks. Many thanks.--Wehwalt (talk) 10:58, 26 June 2010 (UTC)

(Update): Today has been a day of distractions , with Terra Nova Expedition on the main page, and various other tiresome chores, which have slowed progress on the Tosca "music" section. However, that should be posted some time on Monday. The level of interest in this expansion has tended to make these early stages rather untidy, but I expect the article to be in pretty good shape next week. (At any rate, in better shape than England FC, RIP) Brianboulton (talk) 22:30, 27 June 2010 (UTC)

Quite understand. A few distractions around here too. No deadlines at WP. I know the feeling, both you and I generally improve articles without huge interest. Not only are we getting comment, but it is informed comment! A blessing and a curse.--Wehwalt (talk) 22:35, 27 June 2010 (UTC)

Tosca images

I don't wish to disparage the fine effort put into locating these, but we need to talk about them My thoughts:-

  • The focus of the article must be the opera. While the historical context is useful background it is not worth two images, perhaps not even one. I am worried that they cause unsightly clutter; my preference is that both the battle and Maria Carolina should be removed.
  • Sardou is relevant, but the image should be reduced in size via upright - it's far too big at present
  • If we keep Illica, likewise reduced, we should remove the libretto cover. Otherwise, keep the cover, lose Illica, but there isn't room (or need) for both
  • The opera pictures are great. We must be careful, though, not to overwhelm the text. We also need to consider image placement carefully. Too many images, and a cluster of soundfiles, could bring us problems. With such a proliferation of images I am uncertain that all the (low-quality) sound files should be kept, but that's a different matter.

I have just posted my redraft of the Music section and will be tinkering with that for a while. I will also be reducing the size of the musical numbers table but I may not reach that until tomorrow. Can you ping my talkpage to let me know you've seen this? Brianboulton (talk) 22:59, 28 June 2010 (UTC)

Tosca recording history

I shall be working on this today. Although I plan a short section, it involves some deep research (old reviews etc) which will keep me off the page for most of the day. If you have access to The Metropolitan Opera guide to recorded opera: Paul Gruber, Metropolitan Opera Guild, you may be able to add something. The google link doesn't give me access to any pages, and the book is practically unobtainable here in the UK.

Meanwhile, I managed last night to nominate The Temple at Thatch. If you are able to review it, could you add a brief "sources" review such as I usually provide for the rest of the FAC page? Thanks, Brianboulton (talk) 10:09, 30 June 2010 (UTC)

Yes, it should prove helpful. It has decent reviews of many of the recorded versions. I've done a brief source review for Thatch and will weigh in later on in the day.--Wehwalt (talk) 12:46, 30 June 2010 (UTC)

Hoover dam picture layout

Layout of pictures is of course dependent on window size. On my display (1200x1080, full-size window) there are a couple of problems:

  • the Hoover Dam's powerhouse picture pushes the next header section to the left. Perhaps under the Overhead of Hoover Dam's power plant ... picture would be better.
  • the panorama is pushed over to the right by the last few pixels of the Bypass construction picture. The panorama really needs to be forced to be full window width.

Let me know if you would like me to try reorganising the pictures, but otherwise I won't interfere with your excellent work (for which thanks.) Mirokado (talk) 19:04, 30 June 2010 (UTC)

Feel free. I am not the best person at arrangement of images. I tried to make all the images in the part of the article which is historical, historical images only, suggest letting that be intact.--Wehwalt (talk) 19:05, 30 June 2010 (UTC)

Stylistic suggestion

One of the criticisms when we were building the Holloway article is that too many sentences began with "On Month Day,". We consciously mixed it up (same thing for how paragraphs begin). I think there is something about writing an article about events that come out in dribs and drabs over a long term, because you seem to do the same thing. Suggest a similar remedy, sometimes bury the date in the sentence or begin with the event that happened on that day, it isn't difficult. Just a suggestion.--Wehwalt (talk) 22:08, 30 June 2010 (UTC)

Agreed, I will look out for that. I tend to wait about a week before doing cleanup so that the incoming bits of news can be organized to flow in a more unified manner (e.g. the lawyer quit, but then he didn't). KimChee (talk) 23:22, 30 June 2010 (UTC)

Tosca soundfiles

I would like to try moving the four soundfiles from their present locations, and placing them in a column, in sequence, to the right of the numbers table. I am unable to do this (I've tried and failed) - do you know how to do it? It may not be the best idea, but I'd like to try it. Thanks for the Thatch comments. Brianboulton (talk) 00:13, 1 July 2010 (UTC)

I will probably have no better luck, but I will try. Diefenbaker is on the main page, which should put an end to those libels about no World Cup related articles.--Wehwalt (talk) 00:14, 1 July 2010 (UTC)
I had no luck, playing in my sandbox with it. Is there someplace we can appeal for help?--Wehwalt (talk) 00:43, 1 July 2010 (UTC)

For virtually and academically scaling new heights in order to help chip away at and improve the foundation for the new featured article, Hoover Dam! Thanks again, I just got back Wikipedia today to read the good news. Thanks for addressing the comments and seeing it though, you were the main editing force. I will keep a good eye on it until September 30th. Pity some of those awesome pictures had to go...--NortyNort (talk) 07:55, 3 July 2010 (UTC)

More Tosca

I have added a short bit about editions. Perhaps you can add something - my sources are very sparse. For example I have no information about when the shepherd's song was added; presumably in the 1909 version? Please feel free to amend or add if you've got better info. Brianboulton (talk) 16:36, 1 July 2010 (UTC)

Ashbrook is the best source on this, I'm sorry you can't see the Google Books. He does not mention the Shephard boy's song, I'll have to go looking for that one. I think it is shaping well.--Wehwalt (talk) 17:59, 1 July 2010 (UTC)
I have left a note on the talkpage on the Premieres section, which includes my proposals as to what should replace it - which is what I'll be working on (inter alia) during the next couple of days. I'd say we are probably on course for a PR nom by Monday, unless unseen trouble arises. I think the article is beginning to shape up. Brianboulton (talk) 23:31, 1 July 2010 (UTC)
I think so. I'm slowly moving into polish mode. I'm at the point on my parts of the article where I am afraid of drowning the reader in trivia.--Wehwalt (talk) 23:33, 1 July 2010 (UTC)
Well, as I go through the performance history I am weeding out stuff, not exactly trivia but incidental...you'll see what I mean when I post. However, there is an issue I'd like your agreement on. Having read the beginning of the article, I think that Voceditenore is right: the "Historical context" is a preamble to the plot, and should be moved down. I also feel that at 518 words it has a little too much detail for its purpose, which should be to help readers understand the synopsis; do you think it can be cut? Brianboulton (talk) 00:06, 3 July 2010 (UTC)
No question. By how much, do you think?--Wehwalt (talk) 00:09, 3 July 2010 (UTC)

Update: I have revised the performance history stuff, getting rid of the sterile Premieres listing and replacing it with infomation on performers, and with a summary of some critical comments including Kerman's. If you have anything interesting to add please do - preferably briefly. I have trimmed the first night and early performances sections a bit; two significant cuts are the stuff about the origins of Madama Butterfly (interesting, but not really relevant in this article) and a blockquote which didn't appear to be saying anything striking and read, I thought, a bit lamely.

I note the transfer of the Historical context material. I am going to do a bit more adjusting and polishing of the prose tonight, then I will write the rest of the lead. Before we nom for PR (Monday, I am assuming) I hope to do a slow readthrough, looking for repetition, verbosity and other crimes against prose; I always do this before a PR, and always find I can trim at least 100 words without losing any material whatever. I may, however, only have limited time on the page tomorrow, because it's my birthday (yes, I'm a real live nephew of my Uncle Sam) and naturally I shall be partying far into the night. Brianboulton (talk) 20:37, 3 July 2010 (UTC)

That is fine. I've added a paragraph on the "does he know" issue, if you do not find it relevant, feel free to delete or modify. I will also add in some critical reaction and also sometime as you sober up will do a full read through (I've gone through every section, but only as sections). Happy happy, many glad returns of the day, and I recommend heavy doses of painkillers and orange juice.--Wehwalt (talk) 20:44, 3 July 2010 (UTC)
I'm finding time away from the grand celebrations to do a little more work on Tosca. I've revised and extended the lead and done a little copyediting on the Getting the rights section. I'm working on Adaptation and writing at the moment. I found the second paragraph of this section a little overcomplicated with detail, and will be suggesting some simplification. Rather than keep checking with you, I'll just work through and post my version. You can always alter and add stuff back as you see fit - this approach seems to have worked so far. I think that even if we are still in the process of polishing, the article should go to PR tomorrow; I'm looking forward to its impact on entirely fresh eyes (I will warn some of our faithful readers). Brianboulton (talk) 20:38, 4 July 2010 (UTC)
That's fine. I tend to over-write a bit. The article is fairly long, some of it had to go. I've been watching and will continue to. I do not have anything planned for the 4th. Although I am inspired to consider Statue of Liberty as a future project (although I do not think I've been there as an adult).--Wehwalt (talk) 20:57, 4 July 2010 (UTC)

Tosca images

We need these properly checked out before we go to FAC. After a quick run-through I have a few concerns:-

  • Lead image: licence claims publication before 1923, but no publication details given.
  • Sardou: We cannot claim PD on the basis of "life of author plus 70 years" when we don't know who the photographer was. We can't assume that this person had died before 1940; the just visible inscription to Illica suggests the photo was taken around 1900, and the photographer could therefor easily have been alive in 1940. The link to source doesn't work as such, so we don't have publisher details. A possible alternative is this, a photo of Sardou by Alphonse Liebert, 1827-1913. But again we lack publication details. If all else fails we could use File:Victorien SardouVF.jpg, a caricature but for which we have unassailable PD information.
  • Libretto cover: There is no evidence that Rimigliano is the person who photographed the cover, who is named in the image details as DOMENICO. However, there are probably other licences we can use.
  • The old Met photos were loaded by 4meter4. I am sure they are PD, but in each case the source link does not go to the image, which makes it impossible to verify the licences. I will contact 4meter4 about this.
  • Battle of Marengo: OK as far as I can see this is fine.
  • Poster: I think this is OK now that I have corrected the description and publication information.

I have asked my old friend User:Jappalang if he can help by checking these out and advising us accordingly. Unfortunately he is mostly off-wiki these days, so there's no guarantee he will get my message. Sympathetic image reviewers are a bit of a rarity these days, but if you know any, by all means let's have their help. Brianboulton (talk) 22:05, 5 July 2010 (UTC)

Fasach Nua was friendly enough on the dam article, but I've been up and down with him, so I don't know. He seemed to like the dam pictures. I'm just going to start by doing my best on what we have. There are other possibilities, we do have images of all three Rome locations, for example. And Sardou is really decoration ...--Wehwalt (talk) 22:13, 5 July 2010 (UTC)
I've found a 1906 book on Puccini with photos, which was published in London and NY. Checking to see if that is good enough. Don't know if you can view it, it is here.--Wehwalt (talk) 22:21, 5 July 2010 (UTC)

Sorry

I'm sorry if anything I posted at WS RFA upset you.

I was only trying to give my opinion. I was badgered for an early oppose comment at RFA when I was a new user, so I tend to react to things that seem similar.

I think it's admirable that you've given the support you do to WS - and I hope you understand why I made the comments I did.  -  Begoon (talk) 14:27, 7 July 2010 (UTC)

I wasn't so much badgering you, as I said, I was using your oppose as an indirect platform to query others, that I really felt had no bearing on WS's capacity to be an admin. Forgive me for using you in this manner.--Wehwalt (talk) 14:36, 7 July 2010 (UTC)
Thanks. It wasn't me who was badgered, I just commented on it, and thought I may have upset you in the process. Nick made the oppose, I reacted, then it bounced back and forth. Anyway, assuming no hard feelings, that's good - thank you  -  Begoon (talk)
Nope. I always try to dehphuze the situation.--Wehwalt (talk) 14:46, 7 July 2010 (UTC)

RFA Thank spam

Thank you for voting in my RfA, which failed with 10 support, 26 oppose, and 13 neutral. Your comments were much appreciated.

On a personal note, thank you for nominating me Wehwalt, the fact that an admin shuch as yourself would nominate me is very re-assuring. Hopefully the next time I run, it will pass :)--White Shadows There goes another day 16:03, 7 July 2010 (UTC)

Aimé Dupont

Re: Commons:Category:Aimé Dupont. Perhaps the refs supporting 1900 as the year of his death are incorrect. If you still think he died in 1903, please provide refs to support the change. --Robert.Allen (talk) 19:55, 7 July 2010 (UTC)

I looked through the search you provided, and it has some problems. It turns up many pages with "Aimé" and "Dupont" as parts of different names. It also turns up other people with the name "Aimé Dupont". Frequently the "1903" term has nothing to do with the date of death. This kind of search is not sufficient. We need to find a specific reliable source of information (for instance, a newspaper report, obituary, or an entry in a biographical dictionary of photographers) which disagrees with the obituaries and reports we already have. If we find these, then I think we could say his date of death is reported differently in different sources. I considered the web page at the National Portrait Gallery somewhat reliable, since they own an oil portrait by Dupont and as an established art musuem probably have trained staff to determine these sorts of facts. However, this single reference could be a typo. But now we have other reports which we could consider good sources which corroborate a date of 1900. I don't deny that some contemporary websites report a 1903 date, but I did not yet find any which would appear to be particularly reliable sources:
  • This ref is written by a blogger by the name of Don Shelton. He asserts Aimé Dupont died in 1903. He gives no source for the information and writes in the 21st century. What do we know about Don Shelton?
  • This ref is again a 21st-century commercial website which does not give a source for its information. (Is their source Don Shelton?)
  • This ref reports dates of "1840–1903". It is also a 21st-century commercial website which does not give its source of information.
Should we consider any of these to be more reliable or credible sources for the date of death, when compared to what we already have? Obituary reports of a 1900 year of death which appeared in two different photography journals of that year, one of which reports the specific date, seem more reliable to me. And we also have a report on the firm's bankruptcy from 1920. We don't have the time to check all 384,000 hits in these search results. Perhaps we can improve it and turn up something reliable which accounts for the discrepancies in date reported on these other sites. But so far I have not seen a source which I feel reliably refutes the date given in the refs we already have. --Robert.Allen (talk) 05:19, 8 July 2010 (UTC)

I reread the ref with the Mishkin bio. This would appear to be a credible source of information. And perhaps his page is the source for the 1903 date that we find on the other sites. I added some additional info to that ref to indicate the discrepancy with the other three sources of information. Perhaps this is sufficient for now. Feel free to modify. --Robert.Allen (talk) 05:54, 8 July 2010 (UTC)

I went through a few more items from your search. This cached web page from the Getty Museum gives dates of 1842–1900. Unfortunately the Getty site does not appear to be online at this moment. Perhaps later today. --Robert.Allen (talk) 07:05, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
Do as you think best. It's rather confusing. But I would think that if they were printing obits for him in M. Dupont's lifetime, there would be further comments about that in the journals. Just trying to justify my gf change.--Wehwalt (talk) 07:36, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
Well, the St. Louis obit says that at the time of his death he was "one of the most celebrated photographers in the United States", so perhaps he's worth all the effort to establish his dates more firmly. Personally, I'm satisfied with what we have right now. Thanks for all the input. --Robert.Allen (talk) 07:58, 8 July 2010 (UTC)

Tosca matters

First, I am sorry that the boys in South Africa have been dief-eated. To more mundane matters, have you seen the change I've put through on the Tosca page (probably yes, you watch everything)? I expressed my concern on the talkpage about thepotential of sections called "Notable performers" to grow and grow. Guided by the discussion, I have remodelled this part, merging it into a "Subsequent production" section, reducing the number of "names" and giving more emphasis to productions. Tomorrow I intend trying to deal with any outstanding images issues. I think we are now getting close to the complete thing, and suggest we confer on Saturday re future timings. Brianboulton (talk) 22:52, 8 July 2010 (UTC)

They needed a better dief-ence. I am traveling until Monday so I will most likely be on only in the early morning and late evening US time.. Getting down to cases, it's still OK, but the tight writing I think we had tried for has loosened somewhat due to the need for additions. Articles tend to grow under review, but I would try to keep it at its present length from here on out. The ideas being proposed are not unreasonable, just difficult to work in without paying a price in cohesiveness and tight writing. Saturday sounds good. Frankly, I would advise running it as soon as we solve the images are OK.--Wehwalt (talk) 01:33, 9 July 2010 (UTC)
As of now I intend resisting any more additions. The talkpage people are pretty supportive and I don't think they will add stuff without consultation. This is more likely to happen if/when the a article gets promoted and ceases to be our daily concern, but we can't control that. I will do a slow readthrough and try and tighten prose where appropriate; there are also consistency checks needed for dates, represntations of numeric values, etc. All should be done by Saturday. Brianboulton (talk) 09:22, 9 July 2010 (UTC)
I will do the same, most likely tomorrow morning. I have a long drive ahead of me right now.--Wehwalt (talk) 10:04, 9 July 2010 (UTC)

Return of the hoax

You may find this interesting, since you were involved in uncovering the original hoaxage. I've looked about for evidence of the return of other bogus Letchworth/Ebenezer Howard/Spencer Gore material without finding anything, but it's rather dispiriting that the repost of Letchworth Corset Riot hung around for a couple of months without being noticed. Deor (talk) 00:35, 9 July 2010 (UTC)

Wow. The guy was a very talented writer, I recall that, and went to considerable lengths to make his hoax seem real. If he hadn't chosen to name one of the musical numbers after a supermarket chain I knew didn't exist in 1914, I might not have caught on. I will keep an eye out for now on.--Wehwalt (talk) 01:27, 9 July 2010 (UTC)

David Cameron

Hi, I notice following unhelpful edits to William IV of the United Kingdom you added pending changes protection. Just wondering, would it be possible to do the same to David Cameron, which the same IP (among many, many others) is currently vandalising? Thanks.--188.221.105.68 (talk) 23:35, 9 July 2010 (UTC)

It would, but probably better if you posted a request on the talk page of that article, so that the editors and admins who watch that page can discuss the need.--Wehwalt (talk) 04:15, 10 July 2010 (UTC)

GA nom

Hey Wehwalt, just letting you know I passed Ernest Augustus I of Hanover at GA. I categorized it under Royalty and Nobility, mostly because I wasn't sure what else to do with it; if you feel like recategorizing, go ahead. Cheers, Nikkimaria (talk) 17:23, 10 July 2010 (UTC)

Tosca update

I think I am finished with the prose now, having been all the way through, trimming and tweaking. The article stands at 6,400 words, which I think is good; it was well over the 7,000 mark at one stage. It is still noticeably longer than my other FA operas, but is of course a more popular opera, about which much more has been written – I don't think length is a problem. I am waiting for the uploads of two images to replace De Marchi and Ternina (see talkpage); meanwhile I have added alt text (I tend to do this on the grounds that the requirement may well return one day). Perhaps in the course of the next 24 hours you will read and tweak and otherwise polish the article into its final form. I think this is a good one – and it owes something to the page watchers, who have never lacked for ideas, most of which were good and sound. Anyway, happy reading; I am going to do some catching up in other areas but can be pinged at any time. Brianboulton (talk) 17:43, 11 July 2010 (UTC)

I will get to all this within the next couple of hours, unless I fall asleep first. I am about 12 hours short on sleep.--Wehwalt (talk) 16:04, 12 July 2010 (UTC)

Poor unblock

I see near unanimous endorsement for the block of Rodhullandemu at AN, which is very rare on a site this large. Your unblock goes against any type of consensus or common sense. I was one of the first comments on the thread, and I predicted that an action like this would happen, so it comes as absolutely no surprise to me. But I don't want there to be any doubt that what you did was not noble, useful, or in good judgment. --MZMcBride (talk) 16:57, 11 July 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for the input. Are you aware that I had the consent of the blocking administrator, who is the person you go through per WP:BLOCK? Go look at his talk page and read what was discussed. I unblocked with his consent and followed the condition laid down by him. Is that the "action" that you predicted "would happen"?--Wehwalt (talk) 16:02, 12 July 2010 (UTC)
You could have had the consent of the Queen, that doesn't make it any less of a brain-dead unblock. I didn't say you violated the rights of the blocking admin or went against his apathetic wishes. I said that what you did was a poor idea, for the reasons I outlined above. I predicted that an admin would come along, cast common sense aside, and lift the block early. And that's exactly what happened. The unblock wasn't necessary or in good judgment. --MZMcBride (talk) 17:18, 12 July 2010 (UTC)
So he needed to serve his time to be punished fully, eh?--Wehwalt (talk) 17:21, 12 July 2010 (UTC)
How many blocks are given every day to users, usually for an indefinite duration? Was there some sort of life-or-death situation that prevented him from sitting out for 24 hours? It's not about punishment, it's about what your actions say to the rest of the community, about admins vs. non-admins, about the acceptability of inappropriate comments, etc. I don't think anyone is surprised that an admin jumped in and unblocked early. However, the predictability of it doesn't make it any less wrong. --MZMcBride (talk) 17:59, 12 July 2010 (UTC)
As I understand it, the non-Admin in this matter was unblocked after twelve minutes, the universe would not have shattered had he served his time, either (well, given that it is Malleus, maybe it would have! :) )--Wehwalt (talk) 21:22, 12 July 2010 (UTC)
FWIW, I think Wehwalt made the right call on this one. As Malleus himself has said, given that they were both acting about the same they should both have received the same treatment; that is, either both get blocked or neither. – iridescent 21:25, 12 July 2010 (UTC)

Tosca FAC

Latest comments raise again the problem of premature plot disclosure. How should we respond? Brianboulton (talk) 10:30, 16 July 2010 (UTC)

Well, first of all, I would revise the sentence you just added to say something like "Spoletta agrees that the shooting shall be come Palmieri (as we did with Palmieri)". Yes, V. is correct, Spoletta expains it in the play after Cavaradossi is dead (Sardou hated loose ends, even one which I think 110 years of opera has proven is fully understandable by the audience). I would not go into the whole mock execution thing in Act II. Does the score say how Spoletta is to say his line?--Wehwalt (talk) 12:57, 16 July 2010 (UTC)
And while it is unusual, I really have no objection to moving the plot up front. It is very possible that we could then delete some unnecessary explanations (like "evil police chief") in other sections. My first FA, assisting Lenin & McCarthy with Borat, we began with the plot and it was never questioned and worked well.--Wehwalt (talk) 13:05, 16 July 2010 (UTC)
Spoletta doesn't "agree" that the shooting shall be come Palmieri. He understands this, from Scarpia's look and tone. Scarpia repeats the message: "As we did with Palmieri", and Scarpia says "I understand". There is no specific indication in the vocal score as to how Spoletta says this. Readers need to be made aware that "come Palmieri" is a coded instruction for a real execution, otherwise the remark makes no sense. I'll tweak it a bit more, though I agree it should be kept short.
As to moving the plot, as you know I have difficulty with this. However, that doesn't imply inflexibility. How about the following as a compromise:-
  • Retitle "Securing the rights" as "Background", adding the first paragraph of "Adaptation and Writing" to this section.
  • Move the rest of the Adaptation and writing section below the plot summary
I have tried this out; take a look in my sandbox (you probably already have) and say whether you think that would work. There would be other consequential tweaks, but I think it would meet the criticisms we are encountering. Brianboulton (talk) 16:00, 16 July 2010 (UTC)
I will look at it. Meantime, we have more comments.--Wehwalt (talk) 16:03, 16 July 2010 (UTC)
I'm not sure your solution completely addresses the problem, but it is a good compromise and something to point to if there is yet another request in this area. When I summarize a plot, I may foreshadow (doable here), but I generally don't tell the reader of a plot twist until it happens. Perhaps something like "Though Scarpia tells his minion the execution is to be simulated, he stresses that it will be 'as we did with Count Palmieri', and Spoletta states that he understands his instructions." If you saw Tosca for the first time, and were unaware of its plot, that exchange would not strike you as particularly odd. It is only in retrospect that it does, as Tosca herself apparently has time to realize, or she would not blame Scarpia in her final words. (after all, Cavaradossi could have been shot with real bullets by mistake, and not through Scarpia's deceit)--Wehwalt (talk) 16:13, 16 July 2010 (UTC)
It also seems to me that we are getting a firing squad from both ends, with the musically sophisticated objecting on technicalities when we try to make it read more simply, and vice versa.--Wehwalt (talk) 16:57, 16 July 2010 (UTC)
Re Johnbod comments: His unstruck comments seem almost all to relate to parts of the text which you wrote. I can't see anything in his list that I can respond to, unless I'm missing something. Brianboulton (talk) 20:31, 17 July 2010 (UTC)
OK, I'm on it.--Wehwalt (talk) 20:41, 17 July 2010 (UTC)
Did I miss any? Frankly, I thought Voceditenore had assuaged him on those and that nothing further was needed. I think I caught them all.--Wehwalt (talk) 21:04, 17 July 2010 (UTC)

Looking for advice on an AN/I case

I’m looking for advice. The anonymous IP editor who was wikistalking Centpacrr (e.g. at Stephen Ambrose and a bunch of other articles) popped back up – this time targeting Centpacrr at The High and the Mighty (film). He’s already under an indefinite block, enacted on his sock Techwriter2B in June (see June AN/I thread [3]). That seems to have caused him to lay low for a couple weeks, but he’s now back at it using the newly registered username Filmcracker, as well as 64.252.0.159 (one of the IPs he used at Stephen Ambrose).

A new AN/I thread was started (by Centpacrr) on July 13, requesting a block on these sock accounts (see new thread here [4]). A ban proposal was soon made (by Jusdafax), eight editors have weighed in, all fully supporting and none opposed (and the majority of editors commenting have no personal history of conflict with this user). The user in question summarily deleted the two notices (about AN/I) posted at the Filmcracker talk page, left a note on Centpaccr’s talk page calling him a crank, crackpot, and kook, and has provided absolutely no response at AN/I. The AN/I thread has been sitting unclosed now for a couple days (i.e. with no comments from new editors/admins), despite requests from Centpaccr (and no admin response to Centpaccr’s “what (if any) further evidence or comments are needed to obtain the necessary administrative action.”). The user continues to roll merrily along with his edits to various articles (though a previously uninvolved editor – Rockstone – has volunteered to revert them).

So I’m wondering if there’s anything more I can do at this point. Eurytemora (talk) 01:28, 18 July 2010 (UTC)

I would ask another admin to close it, or post a note on AN/I asking and admin to close it (as a new section). I had better not do it myself.--Wehwalt (talk) 01:34, 18 July 2010 (UTC)
There have been no responses to requests for closing on the thread itself (i.e. Centpaccr tried this as a new section a couple days ago). Also, when the new thread was opened, I posted a note about it on the talk page of the admin who placed the indef block (but there have been no responses/comments from him so far). I know it's kind of hard to answer this - but would you suggest that I try contacting 1. the admin who placed the block last month (i.e. another comment on his talk page), or 2. one of the two previously uninvolved admins who left comments (in the AN/I thread) supporting the ban, or 3. some random admin. Eurytemora (talk) 02:02, 18 July 2010 (UTC)

User:Kww is an excellent admin.--Wehwalt (talk) 02:06, 18 July 2010 (UTC)

I'm sorry for letting you down... I found out that I'll likely get my teeth pulled on the 21, my one year anniversary here, yay... I wish that I can help like I promised but I don't have any sources. What can/should I do?--White Shadows It's a wonderful life 03:04, 18 July 2010 (UTC)

To make it up to you, I'll do my best to assist you in the GA for it. I won't claim credit for the GA though as I have not done much to the article.--White Shadows It's a wonderful life 01:02, 19 July 2010 (UTC)
That is fine It is still a bit rough, but what do you think? I still need to add a bit but I think it will work out OK in the end.--Wehwalt (talk) 01:04, 19 July 2010 (UTC)
It's going great IMO. I don't see any glareing errors but it's the little stuff that kills a GAN and an FAC....--White Shadows It's a wonderful life 01:06, 19 July 2010 (UTC)
Well, I haven't gone over it with a fine tooth comb yet, which is all part of the process. If you want to help, I could use historical photographs from AFTER the statue opened to the public, which are provably public domain (that is PUBLISHED before 1923 or provably taken by the Federal Government. The fact that it is in a Federal Government photo collection does not prove it was taken by the Federal government, as the Feds can buy the rights to photos just like the next guy. I was spending hours doing this yesterday and today and came up with little that can be done without emailing people and that kind of thing. This is the sort of painstaking, pain in the butt work that strains the eyes and separates the FAs from the hoi polloi. Give it a shot. Good training for you.--Wehwalt (talk) 01:09, 19 July 2010 (UTC)
I'll try but I'm swamped right now with my own GANs :(--White Shadows It's a wonderful life 01:11, 19 July 2010 (UTC)
Oh well. At least it won't be a huge problem with Lee. Most photos of Lee were published to death well before 1923.--Wehwalt (talk) 01:15, 19 July 2010 (UTC)
To amuse myself, I put a phrase in the article which would be perfectly understandable to someone from the NY/NJ area (like me, until age 24) but will read very oddly to anyone else. I'll never get away with it at FAC, but I'm leaving it in for now. If you want extra credit while recovering from Marathon Man, you might want to read it and figure out what I'm talking about.--Wehwalt (talk) 01:20, 19 July 2010 (UTC)

RS or Undue

Hi Wehwalt. The WP:RSN is not meant for discussion on Undue weight -- "The guideline that most directly relates to whether a given source is reliable is Identifying reliable sources. The policy that most directly relates is: Verifiability. For questions about the sourcing policy, please go to the Verifiability talk page. If your question is about whether material constitutes original research, please use the No original research notice board. Hi again! I've thought about this and I don't believe it improves the article if we totally exclude the different reports regarding Dogan's citizenship. So I don't think the concerned articles should say any one thing definitively. In Dogan's article, in particular, I think we should note that there is confusion, and to that end the Daly article could be useful. So, framed that way, do you have a RS objection to Eurasia Review and Daly's own professional qualifications as a UPI correspondent? Respectfully, RomaC TALK 08:03, 21 July 2010 (UTC)

"On Neutralhomer" on my Talkpage

Thanks for the kind comments about me. I don't think I will respond to the IPs comments as I am not sure how to respond. I want to respond by snapping the guy's head off, but that wouldn't work. So I am just going to leave it there and reference it each time he comes back under another IP (from the same location) to start this whole mess over again.

I would, though, like your opinion on the word "semiquincentennial". It, apparently, isn't used on any dictionary (but most Latin terms aren't), but it is found in use on many pages (some town pages or churches), so it can be referenced. Do you think the word should stay or go due to the small battle to remove it. - NeutralhomerTalk • 20:43, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

If it becomes an issue, dump it. Being at FAC means having to give and take sometimes. Nature of the game.--Wehwalt (talk) 20:47, 20 July 2010 (UTC)
I almost expect it will get dumped in FAC due to lack of sources or no dictionary findings, then I will have no choice. For now, like I told the IP, I think it gives the article a little "umph" and makes the reader go "wow" when the word is used. Anyone can write a sentence about a "250th anniversary", but including the word "semiquincentennial" kinda adds something to the whole mix. - NeutralhomerTalk • 20:56, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

Neutralhomer

Surprisingly, I have found Neutralhomer quite the opposite from what you state. I would suggest that if you want to be taken seriously, get an account. IP editors are inevitably going to have their edits closely scrutinized. And posts like this, being a keyboard psychologist who is trying to lash out, do not contribute towards building an encyclopedia.--Wehwalt (talk) 11:23, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

Of course you have had the opposite experience. You've been around nearly five years, and you're an admin. Naturally he's not going to do anything either to cross you or to demonstrate his negative tendancies if he thinks you're watching. I don't even doubt that most of what he does is very good, and that his presence here is a net positive. But you speak of building an encyclopedia. When I tried to do that[5][6], he slapped me down, reverting me both times, simply because he (mistakenly) thought I was someone else.[7] And because he thought I was this other person, he repeatedly rejected my explanations as to why my edits were constructive, demonstrating by his comments that he did not understand the issues at hand. No one else had any problems with my edits, because they were very good and no one else came in with the burden of faulty omniscience that Neutralhomer had.
Look, I know that IPs do 99.99% of the vandalism around here. But some of us also do good work, and have what we believe are good reasons to stay semi-anonymous. As of today, it's our choice. I expect and accept the extra scrutiny that comes from editing this way. But I also lose all respect for someone who can't man up to his mistakes and continues to rampage against someone after evidence is made available that shows that they are in the wrong. Neutral has done this to me, and has done it to at least one other editor that I have seen. And I'll tell you this--you know when I'll create a username? When Neutral decides to become an admin. I'll create a name and provide shitloads of diffs at his RFA to demonstrate his complete unsuitability for the job. All I would have needed to have retained some respect for Neutral would have been if he could have followed the lead of this guy, who apologized[8] for his actions, even though he didn't need to. Meanwhile, Neutral, who started it all, not only did not apologize, he continued to ride my ass.98.71.218.226 (talk) 03:37, 22 July 2010 (UTC)
This was all copied from my talk page, where I left a response. Wehwalt, I want to apologize to you right here and now that this has spilled over onto your talk page. - NeutralhomerTalk • 04:33, 22 July 2010 (UTC)

Additional reply that I think I best not make on the article talk page

Just reading this, I will say this: The only person responsible for a block is the admin who made it. It is his job, entrusted to him by the community, to ascertain the facts and act on them if necessary. I would suggest, IP, that you address your complaint to him.--Wehwalt (talk) 11:16, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

I have no complaint with the blocking admin, because he recognized his error and even apologized (which is going above and beyond, I'd say). But in the Gospel According to Neutral, Tybois can do no wrong. But you know what? I'll just follow his advice[9] and chalk it up to his condition (despite the fact that the only other two people with Asperger's that I've met were the polar opposite of Neutralhomer, insofar as they were universally kind). 98.71.218.226 (talk) 03:49, 22 July 2010 (UTC)
Thank you for your thoughts and for your contributions to the encyclopedia.--Wehwalt (talk) 10:59, 22 July 2010 (UTC)

USBOR

Hey, no luck on finding that business card. Any luck on your end?--NortyNort (talk) 10:23, 22 July 2010 (UTC)

I'm just going to go to that conference in Vegas. I have not contacted the ASCE about what's on the tour, but I'm fearing the extra expense is just bus transportation, which I won't be using anyway because I will stay in Boulder City the night before. I will check with them closer to the time. Still, a hard hat tour with an informed group of people who will ask intelligent questions would be fun anyway. Still shooting for TFA on Sept 30 but it will be at least a month and a half until we can nominate (we cannot nominate until Raul selects an article for September 10, according to the arcane rules for TFA/R).--Wehwalt (talk) 11:02, 22 July 2010 (UTC)
That tour does seem neat. I saw on TV that there is a seepage pool under the dam where they let the seepage collect before it is pumped out. I wonder if the tour will go down there, no one is really allowed for security reasons. I have the TFA article on my watchlist so I should see when it goes up. Thanks. --NortyNort (talk) 11:19, 22 July 2010 (UTC)
I remember the hard hat tour I took in 1996 as really great, so even if it is just a repeat, I'll be fine with that. I didn't know about the seepage. Yes, if you see that September 10 is scheduled, go ahead and nominate. I have proposed blurbs for all my FA's that have not yet run here.--Wehwalt (talk) 11:25, 22 July 2010 (UTC)
Yea, you've done enough and I could use the experience. Your blurb is really good, makes me want to read the article again. I think it'd be good to add a little bit about its main purpose though, water storage and irrigation, from the intro. That "to make the desert bloom" quote would be nice if it could fit. Does it all have to be from the intro?--NortyNort | Holla 13:25, 22 July 2010 (UTC)
It should be in the lede, but there is nothing that says that we can't change the lede and then the blurb, remembering that what is in the lede should be in the body of the article. I'll also add a points calculation. Since this is your first TFA, you get an extra point which I would not.--Wehwalt (talk) 14:12, 22 July 2010 (UTC)
Ok, well I have some time to mull over the blurb. How do the points work and what do they count for?--NortyNort | Holla 14:39, 22 July 2010 (UTC)
WP:TFA/R Basically, while the Featured Article Director makes the final determinations, there is a system of points for determining what articles should be recommended to him. (he very rarely turns down an article). Hoover Dam is a vital article (worth two points), is celebrating a 75th anniversary (2 points), is in a catergory at WP:FA which has fifty or fewer articles (one point) and it is your first TFA (one point) totalling six, which is a very high score (the record is nine). It would be almost impossible to "bump" the article off the page, and I think it is very likely indeed Raul654, the featured article director, will select it. Thanks for the appoval on the Daily News article, I wrote that because I wanted the reference to the paper in my United States Senate election in California, 1950 article, which I hope to make TFA on November 7, to point to an article about that paper, rather than the current Daily News, which has no relation to Boddy's paper.--Wehwalt (talk) 14:45, 22 July 2010 (UTC)

Ok, that point system is good. It helps quantify the process and takes most human bias out. It is good to know this when I do the nom as well. If something similar wasn't TFA there recently, we could get plus or minus a few too. I can't see it being refused to, the article is so great for that day and the intro reads like a good movie trailer, it'll be a hit. No problem on the nom, it was a good article. One thing I love and hate (sorta) about Wikipedia is how you get "sidetracked" making, expanding or reading other articles. But it is good, because article ideas always seem to be random.--NortyNort (Holla) 08:30, 23 July 2010 (UTC)

I will write up an evaluation of the points and put it under the blurb so all you have to do is cut, paste, and sign. We have a month and a half, most likely.--Wehwalt (talk) 11:46, 23 July 2010 (UTC)
Sure, if you want to. I can always take care of it but may need help discerning whether anything of a similar topic was recently featured.--NortyNort (Holla) 14:01, 23 July 2010 (UTC)

RfA reversion

Admittedly my edit summary was over the top, and I'd like to assure you that I don't make a habit of posting summaries like that, as can be seen from my contribution history. Nonetheless, please be a little more careful when using the rollback function on talk pages. You reverted one of the most worthwhile contributions to that thread, and indeed not the only one with a useless edit summary. Regards, --WFC-- 02:23, 23 July 2010 (UTC)

Understood, but if you don't want a book to be judged by its cover, be careful about the cover.--Wehwalt (talk) 02:28, 23 July 2010 (UTC)

Liberty picture

I wouldn't be surprised if it gets changed again. It's just that I didn't like the gray sky in the one I was replacing. As long as it's got some blue sky I'll be happy.  :) 174.108.65.29 (talk) 03:24, 23 July 2010 (UTC)

I agree, it is likely to be an ongoing issue, and it is not vandalism, I can't protect the article over that, it is a question of which is better. I may go to Liberty Island in October and I have a good camera, and try to take a really good picture. Of course, that won't settle things either ...--Wehwalt (talk) 11:44, 23 July 2010 (UTC)

User Question

I am slightly concerned and confused on the behavior of Fasach Nua‎. I posted that we (you, me and Nyttend) were working on the Historical Marker image on my talk and MCQ and directed him to both conversations and asked for his input. He deleted that and a couple other posts, without comment, tonight and just disappeared into The Tubes. I posted a response to this as I am very bothered by his behavior. He seems to be marking things as "oppose" but not working with the user to remedy the situation or work for something that everyone can agree on. This has happened on two FACs now, both backing them up (one for over a month). I feel he should either be a part of the FAC or recend his !vote (but that is not likely to happen). What should be done? - NeutralhomerTalk • 00:38, 25 July 2010 (UTC)

FAC instructions, "Supporting and opposing", fourth bullet point. I would wait a few days anyway.--Wehwalt (talk) 00:46, 25 July 2010 (UTC)
Okie Dokie, I sent the same information to a friend whose FAC has been sitting for over a month due to an oppose by that user. - NeutralhomerTalk • 02:48, 25 July 2010 (UTC)
Just go by the procedures. However, I see no point in your doing it until you pick up a support or two.--Wehwalt (talk) 02:50, 25 July 2010 (UTC)
Okie Dokie....got two supports so far :) and that post I sent was deleted without comment. Which is technically the user's choice, but it is disheartening when I am actively trying to work with the user. :S I will AGF, but it is getting tough. - NeutralhomerTalk • 08:07, 25 July 2010 (UTC)
Well, then I think it is OK to bring this up. Put it underneath his oppose and be very neutral in tone, FAC is not a place to make enemies. And cite diffs! All you need to say is that you acted to address FN's concerns (diff) and asked him on his talk page to reconsider (diff) and he did not respond and has since blanked that area of his talk page (diff).--Wehwalt (talk) 11:32, 25 July 2010 (UTC)
Good early Morning to you, I have posted that on the FAC page. I tried to be as neutral as possible. I diff'd everything, my three posts and his two reverts, I leave it to the people who look in on the page to decide what to do. I couldn't put it directly below his "oppose" as there was a conversation there by myself, you and Nyttend, so I outdented and put it there. Please let me know if anything needs to be changed.
In a slightly related matter, could you take take a look at this edit and see if those links are reliable sources. Essentially all they do is show that the people serve the area. Unfortunately the state link I was previously using was "timing out" and was brought up at the GAC and earlier tonight at the FAC, so it needed to go. The first link is from state voters group, the second is from a website owned by the group who runs the newspaper Roll Call. Thanks. - NeutralhomerTalk • 11:47, 25 July 2010 (UTC)
I really am not the go to person on reliable sources, since I tend to use books.--Wehwalt (talk) 12:09, 25 July 2010 (UTC)
No worries, I talked to another friend (also big on FACs) and they said they were A-OK. :) Thanks for looking though. :) - NeutralhomerTalk • 22:44, 25 July 2010 (UTC)

Wasn't aware that people were making fun of me elsewhere. Oh well, such is life.--Wehwalt (talk) 22:46, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
I just made all of that stuff up, though you are bound to have your own secret club of haters somewhere. On a side note, are you still going to go through GA for the statue article before submitting it to FAC?--White Shadows It's a wonderful life 00:05, 28 July 2010 (UTC)
I took a lot of heat from people with extremist views on the Natalee Holloway case, and some of it is still out there. No, I've submitted it to FAC, there are mild image problems I am doing my best to do something about. You might want to look at it and see if you can suggest anything.--Wehwalt (talk) 00:17, 28 July 2010 (UTC)

True. That's why I'm looking forward to editing Robert E. Lee in August ;)--White Shadows It's a wonderful life 00:52, 28 July 2010 (UTC)
That's good. What does your schedule look like for August? I will be home much of the month, but didn't you have something planned?--Wehwalt (talk) 00:54, 28 July 2010 (UTC)
I'm going to Rome in October and I'm heading to Montreal tomorrow but the only thing that I have planned in August is aceing AP US history and failing Calculus :P--White Shadows It's a wonderful life 00:56, 28 July 2010 (UTC)

(outdent) I was in Rome in May ... beautiful city and it should have cooled off a bit by then, it was quite warm when I was there. I saw the Pope but I also enjoyed sipping a cappuccino on a bar's outside table and watching the city go by ... anyway I will order a couple of Lee bios, I have some other Lee books and need to get in touch with the people in Lexington, I plan to go there for a day as I mentioned. I should be ready to start August 9.--Wehwalt (talk) 01:01, 28 July 2010 (UTC)

I'll be ready to start after August 11 but I'll still start gutting the "bad parts" so to speak.--White Shadows It's a wonderful life 01:03, 28 July 2010 (UTC)
That is fine. As I said, I see you doing the war stuff and me doing the peacetime stuff, at least initially, we will see how much work is involved in each.--Wehwalt (talk) 01:05, 28 July 2010 (UTC)
OK by me.--White Shadows It's a wonderful life 01:07, 28 July 2010 (UTC)

Ernest

Congratulations on Ernest's translation to the Pantheon. I was a bit worried; last week I was the nominated adjudicator for Signpost's "FA of the week", and had to consider exactly 0 promotions. I thought FAs were going out of business, but the production line has started again. I'm working on Nansen, but the going is extremely slow - too many distractions, off and online. End of August, I reckon. Are you going to push Tosca for TFA? Brianboulton (talk) 00:03, 28 July 2010 (UTC)

With all the classical music in July, it may be best to wait for a bit. Thanks for the congrats. I have promised White Shadows to work with him on Robert E. Lee, a megaproject to say the least but I don't have enough sources in hand yet. I might squeeze in Princess Charlotte of Wales into the gap, frankly, how much can you say about her? She grew up with a poor choice of parents, she had a mildly stormy adolescence, finally married the guy of her dreams (or at least someone better than the Prince of Orange), died in childbirth and everyone was very sad. A couple of recent books about her.--Wehwalt (talk) 00:20, 28 July 2010 (UTC)
Well, actually, we haven't had any works of classical music, just composers, so there is no point deduction. I guess I'll slip it in the nonspecific date slot next time it opens up.--Wehwalt (talk) 01:07, 28 July 2010 (UTC)
The only other opera TFA I can find is Agrippina in April 2009. Brianboulton (talk) 14:44, 28 July 2010 (UTC)
OK, we can try that. Raul still has a few more days scheduled. I think people will like the Act 2 image ... you've read the blurb in my blurb box right? Do you have any changes?--Wehwalt (talk) 15:02, 28 July 2010 (UTC)

Liberty redux

Thanks, you have a great article there. I'm just doing what I can to punch it up a bit, will continue to work on the intro. Your comment is apt. Will continue to play with the wording, let me know if I get out of hand. :) Kaisershatner (talk) 21:27, 21 July 2010 (UTC)

Not a problem. Will keep an eye on it. I like to end the first paragraph with an oomph so the reader will chose to read on. Your changes have been very helpful.--Wehwalt (talk) 21:29, 21 July 2010 (UTC)
Don't let me scare you off, btw. Thanks for the praise.--Wehwalt (talk) 21:45, 21 July 2010 (UTC)
Hi, thanks for the feedback. Don't worry, this is much easier than editing George W. Bush and the like (those were the days...). I see you have extensive experience with FA's, but have been meaning to suggest the lede be footnoted extensively. Isn't that typical for FA's and good articles in general? I realize the article is well-sourced, but shouldn't we do the same in the lede? Also, while I generally agree with the clipping, I was considering more of an allusion to the context of the proposal - wasn't it due to the end of the civil war and the upcoming centennial? Why else suddenly decide there should be a monument to American liberty? (Just asking). Kaisershatner (talk) 20:13, 22 July 2010 (UTC)
Ledes are generally not footnoted, as it is assumed that everything contained therein is reflected in the lede and footnoted then. I fear that putting the political context in the lede would be too time consuming, as Napoleon III was certainly friendly to the Confederacy, though the intellectuals like Laboulaye felt otherwise, strongly. It was certainly in connection with the centennial, but I can't find anything that says there was any serious effort at getting a statue done by 1876, the political climate wasn't right, and both France and the US were having financial troubles. By the way, I just got the book I've added as a ref, and I will be overhauling that area of the article. I'm suspicious of that Popular Science ref, it was done before I started work but there are problems with the ref, it cites to the entire article rather than to specific pages.--Wehwalt (talk) 20:31, 22 July 2010 (UTC)
Ok, I figured you had your reasons. NB I had italicized the name- aren't titles of works of art supposed to be italicized? Kaisershatner (talk) 20:48, 22 July 2010 (UTC)
I would suggest changing that back as overly pedantic. Liberty Enlightening the World is certainly italicized, but I think "Statue of Liberty" is more a description which became a name, and I would reflect the common parlance and not italicize.--Wehwalt (talk) 20:54, 22 July 2010 (UTC)
To be clear, I am advocating that Liberty Enlightening the World in bold in the lede sentence should be italicized, not the common name "Statue of Liberty." Let's go for accuracy. Kaisershatner (talk) 21:01, 22 July 2010 (UTC)
Yes, my oversight. Thanks.--Wehwalt (talk) 21:04, 22 July 2010 (UTC)
It is indeed looking good. I am going to continue moving down from the lede, cleaning up, etc. But you've done a superb job. Kaisershatner (talk) 01:35, 23 July 2010 (UTC)
Please do. I've listed this for review but not much seems to be happening. I am hopeful this will get to FAC within two weeks. I'd like to see it run on October 28, 2011 on the main page but it is such a prominent article that it may be grabbed before then.--Wehwalt (talk) 01:38, 23 July 2010 (UTC)

Wow, the more I read it the more impressed I am. This is an extraordinary article. A small note: if you can't attest that taste changed, can you attest that Americans preferred a different style of art? (ie, can this be cited?). Also, one thing potentially missing from the article is if there is any art world analysis of it as a work of statuary (like, is it considered neoclassical style, did any art critics write about it, etc.) Just something to consider. Ok, more tomorrow if I have time...Kaisershatner (talk) 02:49, 23 July 2010 (UTC)

I am tired too and will get back to this tomorrow. I don't recall any specific art world stuff. However, I think I've seen very few negative comments about the statue generally. I will rephrase the art stuff. Thanks for the praise.--Wehwalt (talk) 02:55, 23 July 2010 (UTC)

Hi, I have been looking for art criticism stuff, and found this - it is not a RS but I think you will find it amusing anyway. I think it would be nice to include some of the NYT opposition and mockery, I especially liked the bit about "if he really intended to build this thing, why start with just the arm?" I bet that can be sourced reliably from the NYT archive or something.[10]. Kaisershatner (talk) 14:58, 23 July 2010 (UTC)

Yes, Khan mentions some of that. I'm rather distracted by my FAC right now, but if you like I will include something.--Wehwalt (talk) 15:02, 23 July 2010 (UTC)
I will take a look at the FAC stuff. I am with you on pop culture, opening the door to that is almost always a disaster. Kaisershatner (talk) 18:40, 29 July 2010 (UTC)
I had to open it a little bit I think. I am hoping that burying it under the statistics it won't be noticed much.--Wehwalt (talk) 18:43, 29 July 2010 (UTC)
I know you like to precise about images, which is good. Would you consider adding the Statue of Freedom to the right side of this paragraph; I think it is a useful comparison and shows how the female figure of liberty or Columbia was an established cultural/artistic tradition. Thanks also for the hat tip @ your FAC listing. Kaisershatner (talk) 19:12, 29 July 2010 (UTC)
Either that or the Delacroix painting, take your pick. I will look over the image for copyright tag once you insert it. Thanks.--Wehwalt (talk) 19:14, 29 July 2010 (UTC)
Hey, I will have more to say about the replicas soon, but while researching that/looking for the source of the copper, I came across these stunning photos. We must have them; I especially like the hand framework and the half-built stage that is referred to in the article (Bartholdi invites reporters to dine inside). IANAE but doesn't their age make them public domain? Kaisershatner (talk) 00:08, 30 July 2010 (UTC)
It would be best to show publication prior to 1923. Bartholdi put out a book about the construction in French in around 1886. The ones of the construction are almost certainly PD, but I will try to track down an online copy of the book, you might want to do the same.--Wehwalt (talk) 00:41, 30 July 2010 (UTC)
Book is here. The shots in the book are woodcuts however.--Wehwalt (talk) 00:47, 30 July 2010 (UTC)
Also check out here. By the way, on the copper page, the aerial shot needs more evidence to be PD, which I regret, I've been looking for a PD shot of the statue still showing the old Army buildings nearby. Key is published before 1923. If you are going to go and do the replicas, make sure you start with the reciprocal gift which is in Paris on the Isle de Cygnes (spelling). Everyone knows about that one and will expect to see it.--Wehwalt (talk) 00:55, 30 July 2010 (UTC)
here is evidence the workshop photos were published before 1923.--Wehwalt (talk) 03:28, 30 July 2010 (UTC)

I played with it.--Wehwalt (talk) 01:33, 28 July 2010 (UTC)
I seen, no worries. I figured those two lines you removed would get me in "trouble". :) I thought it would sound, a little "bright", but I guess that could have been considered POV too. Anything else you think needs added to the page in "Government" or any other section, I will be glad to look it up. :) - NeutralhomerTalk • 01:45, 28 July 2010 (UTC)
Thanks. I felt the new lines could cause issues with other reviewers and it was best left out. No big deal. I've been known to be jokey in my articles, although very subtly. Almost every one of my Nixon FAs includes a section title that is something like "Final days", a joking reference to the Woodward and Bernstein book. (See United States Senate election in California, 1950 for an example.--Wehwalt (talk) 01:51, 28 July 2010 (UTC)
Ah, nicely done there. :) What I was trying to do is to make the sentence, kinda seem less dull, I guess. Government and Politics for some can be or are very, very dull subjects, so I was trying to spice it up but at the same time I was thinking "this is going to be cut". That is the writer in my talking. I am getting a writer's voice in my head now that I have been writing on here awhile. :) I am even seeing things in a different light as I write when before I wanted everything in there. Now I know what to include and what to leave out, but sometimes my "let's spice this up" gets the best of me. :) Now if we could just get some more !votes (in the plus side) on this thing, I would be happy. The GAC about killed me with the anticipation, this one is killin' me more. :) - NeutralhomerTalk • 02:08, 28 July 2010 (UTC)
Always nice. Have you posted NEUTRAL requests at the Wikiprojects (like Virginia) that include this article? Karanacs has promoted for the day, so there will be no action at least until the weekend.--Wehwalt (talk) 02:15, 28 July 2010 (UTC)
Also dullness is unavoidable, given the nature of the article, no disrespect to Stephens City, but a town/city article is likely to be a bit dull. I prefer bios, frankly, where the thread of the prose is never broken, you just keep telling a story in a logical fashion.--Wehwalt (talk) 02:19, 28 July 2010 (UTC)

None taken, we are sometimes a little dull here in Stephens City with nothing happening, but I think people perfer that. :) I didn't know I could request !votes on the WikiProjects, I thought that would be looked at as canvassing, I can leave a note on our WP:Virginia page. - NeutralhomerTalk • 02:23, 28 July 2010 (UTC)

You cannot request votes. You can say something like "Stephens City is currently at FAC. I'd appreciate it if those with an interest could review the article and leave comments." You can ask for reviews, you cannot ask for votes.--Wehwalt (talk) 02:25, 28 July 2010 (UTC)
I didn't even do that, I just left a short note saying it was at FAC. You can see my note here and can tinker with it if you like. - NeutralhomerTalk • 02:27, 28 July 2010 (UTC)

Another Question

Hey There, I was wondering how I should proceed with the comment made earlier on the FAC that the county election information and the listings about the community college and university (based in nearby Middletown and Winchester respectively) aren't necessary and might "broaden" the article too much. JonRidinger say I should wait for consensus, but no one has edited the page in over a day, so I am unsure how to proceed. - NeutralhomerTalk • 00:39, 30 July 2010 (UTC)

Just lighting this up again. - NeutralhomerTalk • 01:12, 30 July 2010 (UTC)
That is fine, I had forgotten to answer. Yeah, I think there is sense in what they are saying. Stephens City is a small part of a fair size county, and the county results don't tell you that much about the town. Since the majority of people seem to think it should go, take it out.--Wehwalt (talk) 01:21, 30 July 2010 (UTC)
Okie Dokie, I will do that here in a couple, I am working on something and when I finish with that I will take those two sections out. Thanks Wehwalt. :) - NeutralhomerTalk • 02:11, 30 July 2010 (UTC)

Rather than clutter the FAC...

Nelson C Nye's works (which I own, obviously) as well as some other secondary works on QH racing, are actually quite good sources for descriptions of important/memorable races. Nye was a frequent attendee of QH races and wrote about them in various magazines/newspapers/etc. and then collected a number of his articles up in some books as well as writing other books on QH racing and QH breeding. So I've actually looked for color on her, including at the AQHA. MM is just .. obscure. She was a really good race mare, but not "great". She had really good foals, but not great, and she didn't have lots and lots of foals. She didn't have any great quirks, she didn't eat raw eggs (like another of her contemporaries), she didn't try to kill herself or get accidentally left in a trailer for a week (like Poco Lena), she was "bland". I wasn't kidding when I said she was probably voted in by the HoF comittee because they wanted more mares in the HoF. Seriously, though, if you turn up something, I'm more than happy to try to hunt it down, but I'm NOT going to obscure little county seats in Texas to dig through old weekly newspapers in search of articles, sorry! Ealdgyth - Talk 19:46, 31 July 2010 (UTC)

It's your article. You need to show the reviewers, who earn nothing by reviewing and are necessary to getting a FA, that you've touched all the bases. It is a fair question, especially in a short article. Frankly, I wonder about the racing papers. I hope you are not letting irritation show I never let my irritation at reviewers show, or at least I hope not. Shout and scream at home, fire off a frustrated email to a wikifriend, that's all OK. But not on wiki. Not anymore. If they don't see it, someone will point it out to them.--Wehwalt (talk) 20:04, 31 July 2010 (UTC)
Five minutes of search on the internet pulled up this, reprinted from The Quarter Horse Journal. If I, who knows nothing about racing except what I read in Dick Francis, could find that, what else is there?--Wehwalt (talk) 20:33, 31 July 2010 (UTC)
First, that's a copyright violation (they've ripped off an article I do indeed have - note the "reprinted from" bit at the top) and second, nothing in there isn't already in the wikipedia article... the relevant points for MM are: "While there weren't many of Lee's get foaled in 1953, there were quite a few at the track. Miss Meyers out of Star's Lou made one start in 1951; her fifth-place finish was enough to discourage her owner from trying again that year. She came back in 1952 to win a few races and even managed to pick up a AAA rating at Albuquerque, but it was as a four-year-old that she made her mark. She opened the '53 season with a second to Tonto Bars Gill at Rillito but the next week Miss Meyers could only manage a sixth. She made her next start more than a month later and ran second at Los Alamitos, but then something clicked and she came alive. She won a quarter-mile dash in AAA time at the Vessel's racetrack the first week in May and followed it one week later with a victory in the California Championship, one of the most prestigious Quarter Horse races in the country at that time. In her next 12 starts, Miss Meyers ran AAA or AAAT at Bay Meadows, Centennial (where she won the World's Championship Dash), La Mesa and Pomona, winning seven, running second twice and third twice, to bring her year's earnings to $15,398. With it came the title of World Champion Quarter Running Horse and champion mare." It's basically her 1953 chart in "journalistic" speak. We alreay mention that she won the Dash, that she was World Champion mare in 1953. The rest is a recap of her racing chart for the year, which, while interesting, isn't something that I feel belongs in an encyclopedia article. As for the racing papers... we're getting into "real" research there. The idea is to use secondary sources, not primary, and her racing record IS covered in the secondary sources (Nye, et. al). Yes, I could give a blow by blow account of her racing career, giving each race and what weight she had, etc, but is that really what an encyclopedia article should be? I don't think so, the idea is to cover what made her exciting/different/important, and I personally think the article does that while still remaining a summary of her life, not a complete recap. If it makes you feel better - User:Ealdgyth/Horse References is a very small listing of my horse books. This does not cover the three filing cabinets full of articles and other papers. While I'm not as big in favor of "primary research" for Wikipedia, I've done plenty of it for works I've done on QHs. I've spent well over a month at the AQHA doing research, plumbing their files. I've chased down personal papers from some of the early breeders of QHs, and gone to ranches for research in their files. Im not frustrated, I'm just trying to demonstrate to you that indeed, I have done the research, and I do indeed know what I'm aiming at for the article. I'm not against additional information (I'd love to find something great on the human interest for her) I'm also not going to "pad" the article either. No, I'm not trying to chase the "smallest FA" prize .. I really couldn't care less (it was all kinda "wow, it's small, maybe it is smaller than the ditch"). If someone turns up something that expands it, great, but I'm not seeing anything in that bit above that isn't already in the article that needs to be in the article. Ealdgyth - Talk 20:53, 31 July 2010 (UTC)
Oh, crack me up! check out the Product description - it's a rip off of wikipedia articles! Ealdgyth - Talk 21:04, 31 July 2010 (UTC)
Heh. If the BBC can do it… – iridescent 21:10, 31 July 2010 (UTC)
I did not feel it necessary to mention the copyvio, we've both been around this place long enough. If it wasn't a copyvio of a RS, I wouldn't have brought it up. And yes, I think that is good equine interest and you should use it. As for amazon, they are also selling copies of the text of pre-1923 books, most of which are freely available at google books. I mean, it is a no lose situation for them. And as for the research, I ritually bow in the direction of it, and it is par for the course for us multi FA writers to make trips to archives and so forth. I'm going to California end of the month to turn the Nixon Library upside down for several articles and then am going up to Cal Berkeley, and I've got a trip to Saskatchewan set for September to follow up on Diefenbaker. These things we do!--Wehwalt (talk) 21:17, 31 July 2010 (UTC)

WikiCup 2010 July newsletter

We are half-way through our penultimate round, and nothing is yet certain. Pool A, currently led by Hungary Sasata (submissions) has ended up the more competitive, with three contestants (Hungary Sasata (submissions), Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) and New Orleans TonyTheTiger (submissions)) scoring over 500 points already. Pool B is led by New South Wales Casliber (submissions), who has also scored well over 500. The top two from each pool, as well as the next four highest scorers regardless of pool, will make it through to our final eight. As ever, anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.

Planning has begun for the 2011 WikiCup, with open discussions concerning scoring and flags for next year's competition. Contributions to those discussions would be appreciated, especially concerning the flags, as next year's signups cannot begin until the flag issue has been resolved. Signups will hopefully open at some point in this round, with discussion about possible changing in the scoring/process opening some time afterwards.

Earlier this round, we said goodbye to Pennsylvania Hunter Kahn (submissions), who has bowed out to spend more time on the book he is authoring with his wife. We wish him all the best. In other news, the start of this round also saw some WikiCup awards sent out by Finland Suomi Finland 2009 (submissions). We appreciate his enthusiasm, and contestants are of course welcome to award each other prizes as they see fit, but rest assured that we will be sending out "official" awards at the end of the competition. If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Midshipman FAC review

I was wondering if you could find a little time to review Midshipman before it falls off the FAC page. Thanks! Kirk (talk) 12:07, 30 July 2010 (UTC)

I will try to do it today or tomorrow, hopefully it won't be archived by then.--Wehwalt (talk) 12:17, 30 July 2010 (UTC)
I made quite a few changes, if you could review them that would be great. Kirk (talk) 14:13, 2 August 2010 (UTC)

File:StephensCity_WelcomeSign.JPG

Just turned the computer on and already I am confused. I took this image, along with all images on the Stephens City page. This signage is used on the "four corners" of Stephens City. There are multiple signs and they look exactly alike. I uploaded all my images on Commons and released them CC3.0 (per recommended) so all could use. I am confused on why this needs to be uploaded to Wikipedia and how this falls under NFCC when it was taken by me. - NeutralhomerTalk • 21:50, 2 August 2010 (UTC)

Let me just make clear I am not against changing the picture, I just moved things around when I made the "Economy" section and the "Welcome" sign seems kind of "inviting". :) - NeutralhomerTalk • 21:59, 2 August 2010 (UTC)
If you take a photograph of a copyrighted item, it is not free use. Just like a picture of a Star Wars toy.--Wehwalt (talk) 22:01, 2 August 2010 (UTC)
I didn't see anywhere on the sign any tiny writing with a © or otherwise though :S. OK, let me see what I can dig up in my photos that I can use as an "economic" picture and I will swap the images back around. Gimme about 5 minutes, if you would please. - NeutralhomerTalk • 22:06, 2 August 2010 (UTC)
As was pointed out, it was not "published" through copies being available to the public, therefore the copyright symbol didn't matter.--Wehwalt (talk) 22:11, 2 August 2010 (UTC)
OK, I removed File:StephensCity_WelcomeSign.JPG and swapped the other (the "skyline" image) back where it was previously. The "Economy" section doesn't have an image, cause oddly, I don't have anything that is "Economic" looking. I have tons of images about US Route 11, but nothing that really is "economic" enough. So that should fix the problem, didn't mean for it to be one, just was trying to add another picture. Sorry. - NeutralhomerTalk • 22:19, 2 August 2010 (UTC)
Well, in my current FAC, Statue of Liberty, I've been getting a bunch of image problems. I assumed that because Commons had made one of its images a "valued image", they made sure copyright tags are in order. Not.--Wehwalt (talk) 22:26, 2 August 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, been running into that myself as you can tell. The rest should be OK (I hope) cause they are just "scenic" shots of Stephens City and not really looking at one particular thing. I have talkback'd Fascha Nua to my talk page to notify him of the change in image. Hopefully this is the start of getting the FAC back movin' :) - NeutralhomerTalk • 22:31, 2 August 2010 (UTC)

I was right on my prediction of things getting moving again on the FAC. Had a couple edits from YellowMonkey and JonRidinger on things (see the very bottom of the FAC) mostly related to the "Religion" section. If you like (not saying you have to) you can chime in there. - NeutralhomerTalk • 12:07, 3 August 2010 (UTC)
I am not worried. You are doing quite well for a rookie with a topic which is not at all sexy. The third support will come. I will take a look at the discussion. Look, I'm a veteran with a very sexy topic and I'm sitting around waiting for a third support, too.--Wehwalt (talk) 12:32, 3 August 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, towns are kinda boring. I know...I live here. :) LOL But I think when I piece it all together (the articles I plan on making), it will all look really interesting. - NeutralhomerTalk • 12:41, 3 August 2010 (UTC)
What matters for sexiness is the name of the article and how you describe it. Look, has a president ever visited SC? Odds are there would be free use federal government photos.--Wehwalt (talk) 12:47, 3 August 2010 (UTC)
I think Obama campaigned in Winchester, probably drove through Stephens City on 81. I don't think any President ever stopped here, though I can check. - NeutralhomerTalk • 12:54, 3 August 2010 (UTC)
I checked, notta. But I do know Jim Webb, Mark Warner, Frank Wolf and several others have campaigned in Winchester, but those are state races. Obama did campaign in Winchester in 2008. "W" was in nearby Shepherdstown, West Virginia and Martinsburg, West Virginia a couple times, all a short drive up from DC. Probably just took Marine One. - NeutralhomerTalk • 13:02, 3 August 2010 (UTC)
At least since Johnson, White House photographers accompany the President everywhere. Nixon's WH photographers took so many photos that it may be decades before they are all catalogued, I am in touch with the Nixon library over another matter and they have huge quantities of uncatalogued contact sheets. Too bad he never visited, for sure there would be a photo.--Wehwalt (talk) 13:08, 3 August 2010 (UTC)

Is there a link to where one could search these photos, like the LOC or is it all through their Presidential Libraries? - NeutralhomerTalk • 13:17, 3 August 2010 (UTC)

There is a search on the National Archives, but obviously it doesn't cover uncatalogued material. It is here. I have never found it that helpful though.--Wehwalt (talk) 13:23, 3 August 2010 (UTC)
Seen what you mean by it being not so helpful. Oddly though, I was able to find where a picture was taken with a "Gordon and Mary Quanbeck" of Stephens City, Virginia during the Carter adminstration. It was taken sometime during August 16, 1979. I couldn't actually view it though, but it was neat it was taken. I figure it was taken in the White House, cause there was a swearing in of some person that day, so I don't think he made a day trip to ol' Stephens City. :) - NeutralhomerTalk • 13:41, 3 August 2010 (UTC)
It's possible Presidents have in less formal times. I've read accounts of TR riding into the country from the White House, including in the most appalling weather. I doubt he had a WH photographer with him though. Having dealt with the National Archives for a year, it is an immense storehouse of riches, to which the index is deplorable.--Wehwalt (talk) 13:44, 3 August 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, one day it will be all digitized and online. I am guessing sometime around 3010. :)
Well, my bout of insomnia has finally come to an end, so I am off to bed (yeah, at almost 10am). If you see any posts from Fascha Nua, let him know I am out cold and should be back online around 7pm EST. Take Care...NeutralhomerTalk • 13:46, 3 August 2010 (UTC)

Hey, Wehwalt. You know how White Shadows has a sort of signature? Do you know how i could do that to my name? And how do you trick out your user page and talk page? :-(CamrynRocks! (talk) 17:47, 3 August 2010 (UTC)

Hi Wehwalt

de:John Diefenbaker now is a featured article in German (we call them "excellent articles"). It was fun reading your original version and hard work translating it (but it was definitely worthwile). --Voyager (talk) 07:44, 6 August 2010 (UTC)

Thank you and well done. I will be going to the Diefenbaker Center in late September and certainly getting more images, you might want to keep an eye open for it.--Wehwalt (talk) 10:11, 6 August 2010 (UTC)

Stephens City Question

Give a look to the Economy section. I have added a new picture (since there was a bit of a "dead" area) and it is from a "campground" just to the east of town, outside the town limits. Think that is stretching things too much? The reason it is there is it is a Stephens City business....for the moment, the only one I have. - NeutralhomerTalk • 03:15, 5 August 2010 (UTC) --Wehwalt (talk) 10:30, 5 August 2010 (UTC)

I don't really see what it adds to the article, outside city limits or no. I'd strike it. Everything does not have to be illustrated. I note that there is still a historical marker image. Isn't that a problem?--Wehwalt (talk) 03:50, 5 August 2010 (UTC)
I thought we settled that at MCQ and my talk. - NeutralhomerTalk • 04:27, 5 August 2010 (UTC)
Took out the campground picture per here. - NeutralhomerTalk • 04:29, 5 August 2010 (UTC)
Wasn't the resolution of the historical marker question that it was never published in the sense of copies being available to the public? You might want to confer with User:Elcobbola.--Wehwalt (talk) 10:30, 5 August 2010 (UTC)
Good Morning Wehwalt, see you are up early too. I thought it was deemed "OK" after we placed the {{PD-US-1978-89}} template on the image page on Commons. Perhaps I was mistaken, if I was, I do apologize. I will ask Elcobbola and see what he thinks. - NeutralhomerTalk • 10:34, 5 August 2010 (UTC)
OK, posted to him. As I told Elcobbola, if the image isn't deemed "OK", I have little to no choice than to remove the image (even if I think it adds to the article, since it shows the actual marker) and possibly replace it with something else or nothing at all. My main fear is we wind up with an article with little to no pictures, taking it outside even GA quality (for pictures at least) and it just look like a bland page of writing and little else. - NeutralhomerTalk • 10:42, 5 August 2010 (UTC)
I am almost always up early. The comment that it was not "published" in the sense that copies were available convinced me I was wrong initially. Would you expect a copyright notice on a piece of public artwork? All the exterior shots of Stephens City buildings are fine, and you have the images in that PD book I gave you. If you want a shot of economy, why not (if you've gotten batteries) just take a shot down Rt 11 downtown, or showing the gas stations (don't focus on a sign) after all, those are probably the highest grossing businesses in SC!--Wehwalt (talk) 10:55, 5 August 2010 (UTC)
I was thinking about doing that when Mom pays me back next week. I figure the FAC will still be there by then. I was going to take some of the businesses that are in town and the ones just outside town, like the gas stations. There is this tiny truck stop (when US 11 was the "major road") and I was going to get a picture of it. That might be a tricky shot, but I can do it. Plus there are a couple other businesses in town I could take pictures of just to have them if I ever wanted to "change them up" so it doesn't grow stale, which is what I would like to do. Have a small selection of photos available on Commons (like some do) and change up the images every 6 months or so, longer if necessary, to make it seem "new" again. Just an idea though. - NeutralhomerTalk • 11:04, 5 August 2010 (UTC)
I think for "economy" a shot of the downtown, or a shot looking east from the intersection of Route 11 towards the interstate exit, showing (it shouldn't be hard!) heavy traffic and the gas stations would be good. It might be better than a shot of an individual business. I see no need to "freshen" the article with new shots, I don't think there is much repeat business on Wikipedia articles. Buildings are in the public domain. My policy on my FAs is to monitor them so they don't gradually fall apart with vandalism and well meaning but unsourced edits, add new information as appropriate, but I don't go overboard looking for new images. When I am at the Nixon Library next month, I do intend to take photos of things I had disregarded when I was there before, using my better understanding of the "without a copyright notice" for pre-1978 works, like in the 1950 Senate article, an actual copy of the Pink Sheet and they had campaign material from a short-lived run of one of Nixon's rivals. All in prep for TFA on November 7.--Wehwalt (talk) 11:24, 5 August 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, it was just an idea. I toss stuff around my head, sometimes it sticks, sometimes it does. But I also take alot of pictures so I have plenty for other uses like the History of Stephens City, Virginia page, the Newtown-Stephensburg Historic District page, the Frederick County Public Schools (Virginia) page (which is a work in progress sitting in my sandbox) and a couple other pages I plan on working on for the town. I will have them for those pages or just to have them. You never know when you can use a picture in something. :) So, I take alot. I have two folders full from two days in August 2007, but only a couple are used (all on the Stephens City and Newtown-Stephensburg Historic District pages). But as I branch out, I can use more and more, as I get more and more information about buildings, whether they are notable, etc. All kinds of uses. Plus, we take alot of pictures, but don't do much with them. :) You should see the pictures of the animals. We have tons of folders of those. We like to take pictures. :) - NeutralhomerTalk • 11:31, 5 August 2010 (UTC)

I take a lot of pictures too, but except for Wiki, I don't do much with them. Oh well. No chance you can borrow a camera rather than spending money on batteries? If you keep on with FAs, you will be amazed how much you will learn about copyright law.--Wehwalt (talk) 11:35, 5 August 2010 (UTC)
Nah, don't know anyone with a digital camera I could borrow. But it is OK. I might see how much a four pack of batteries is and see if Mom could pick them up on Friday (when they get paid) and just take it out of what she owns me for next week. That way I get the camera back in action quicker, plus I can get pictures up sooner too. :) - NeutralhomerTalk • 11:41, 5 August 2010 (UTC)
  • Hey, just wanted to let you know that I am still waiting on a response from Elcobbola‎. He hasn't edited since the 3rd, so he might be on vacation or just enjoying WP:REALLIFE. I will let you know when I hear something. Take Care...NeutralhomerTalk • 17:51, 6 August 2010 (UTC)

Losing Hope

At present, I am 11th in on the "Older nominations" list on FAC. This is normally where FACs go to die. I haven't seen any action on the FAC since your post on the 3rd, some 4 days ago. Should I just give up and withdraw, move onto something else, what? I am just disheartened in all the work (some 2 1/2 years worth) into this page and it just sitting there languishing. I just don't want to do this process all over again to, maybe, have this happen all over again. I know in my heart of hearts I have an FA quality article, or at least A Class, but it just seems no one is working on it. What should I do? - NeutralhomerTalk • 09:56, 7 August 2010 (UTC)

Don't be silly. Wait and see. People often review the urgent nominations. No one said this would be easy. Why give up?--Wehwalt (talk) 09:59, 7 August 2010 (UTC)
Well, I seen what happened with the Kent, Ohio nom, it wasn't pretty, so I guess I am fearing the same will happen to mine. - NeutralhomerTalk • 10:06, 7 August 2010 (UTC)
Well, if it fails, spend time reviewing other articles, esp of FA repeat customers, then bring it back. I've had unsexy articles fail through lack of reviews, these things happen, Franklin Knight Lane barely scraped through on the second time because it is not very sexy. I'd say you have a week, at least, so don't give up the ship just yet.--Wehwalt (talk) 10:10, 7 August 2010 (UTC)
Okie Dokie. Thanks. :) - NeutralhomerTalk • 10:13, 7 August 2010 (UTC)
Good thing I didn't give up. I got my third support....now what do I do? :) Just wait for someone to come by and pass it? - NeutralhomerTalk • 04:45, 8 August 2010 (UTC)
I, albeit reluctantly, removed the seal. FN did make a good point. Since I had to dig to find it (literally, it was buried in a rezoning application), it probably wasn't notable to begin with. So, I think I have addressed his concerns. - NeutralhomerTalk • 13:50, 8 August 2010 (UTC)

Yard Crawl

Along with the seal removal (and deletion from en.Wiki) above, I also added one thing to the Culture section I should have added at the start of the GA discussion. Stephens City is the northern beginning for the yearly "Route 11 Yard Crawl". An almost 50 mile long yard sale which starts in Newtown Commons in Stephens City, stretches along U.S. Route 11, to New Market, Virginia. I put mention of it, with two references (one a brand spankin' new story from the local paper just put on their site) in the "Culture" section (my last three edits to the page). Let me know what you think, if it should stay, should go, needs tinkered. I thought it was worth mentioning since the Town of Stephens City actually sponsors it as well. - NeutralhomerTalk • 12:14, 9 August 2010 (UTC)

That sounds good, I've read of similar things further south, I think in Georgia/North Carolina, and I think they have some huge antique/yard sale twice a year somewhere around Galax. Is the seal deleted, or do you need me to wave my magic adminly wand? Again, you might want to consult pre-1923 records and see if the seal is older.--Wehwalt (talk) 12:48, 9 August 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, there is a Yard Crawl (by another name) across the country on U.S. Route 50 and another on U.S. Route 127 through Kentucky and Tennessee. The latter is notable enough to have a page of its own. The seal is gone, I had it {{db-author}}'d, so it is gone gone. I am going to do a little research and see what I can find on when the seal came to be. Actually, I had to dig for the seal to begin with. It was buried in a Rezoning Application (on page 13 of it) from the town's official website. It isn't something they just have. Normally they have this "half" wheel and "Town of Stephens City" which you can see on the top left of their official site. I am not sure if the town seal is something new, something they don't use much or what, but FN did have a point, if I had to dig for it, it wasn't notable enough. So even though I had support for the seal, I thought the bigger picture (the passing of the FA) was more important. But I have three supports, just need FN's support now (changed from oppose...shouldn't be hard) and User:SandyGeorgia said that another user should pass it on Tuesday....hopefully it is today. - NeutralhomerTalk • 13:06, 9 August 2010 (UTC)
Yes, Karanacs is the other FAC delegate and most often runs through the articles on Tuesday, hopefully Statue will be promoted at the same time. As a corporate body, Stephens City almost certainly had a seal from the time the General Assembly chartered it as a town, it is just a question of finding it. It is possible the Act which chartered the town describes the seal, but you would probably have to go to the law library at the Winchester courthouse and find the correct volume of Acts of Assembly to find it, and I doubt it would be pictured.--Wehwalt (talk) 14:00, 9 August 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, it is probably buried in a book somewhere. I am cool without it. I just wanted it because all the other pages (Minneapolis being my go-to example) had one. 'Tis cool. I figured they did FACs any day of the week, I didn't know there was a special day. - NeutralhomerTalk • 14:20, 9 August 2010 (UTC)
Question for on the "Yard Crawl". Since there is a page about the 127 Corridor Sale, do you think the smaller "Route 11 Yard Crawl" (the official name) would be notable enough for a page of its own? - NeutralhomerTalk • 14:22, 9 August 2010 (UTC)
Just lighting up the question about this post. - NeutralhomerTalk • 15:25, 9 August 2010 (UTC)
Has the Yard Crawl received coverage beyond the merely local? I know the thing down in Southside got a WashPost article a few years back. As for the Acts of Assembly, they are organized by year, if you know what year SC received its charter, it should be possible to just go to the law library in the courthouse and check the Acts of Assembly for that year and it probably says anything that the General Assembly had to say about Stephens City. Seals are generally the result of legislative acts, but I am uncertain if on the local or the state level in this case.--Wehwalt (talk) 15:32, 9 August 2010 (UTC)
Just looked, outside the Harrisonburg and Winchester newspapers (and the free paper), the local TV station TV3 Winchester, the State of Virginia website (the Virginia is for Lovers one) and a couple other local links, nothing outside the Valley. So, probably not notable enough, eh? - NeutralhomerTalk • 15:43, 9 August 2010 (UTC)
It is debatable. Suggest starting a discussion on the notability noticeboard.--Wehwalt (talk) 15:48, 9 August 2010 (UTC)

Done and Done. - NeutralhomerTalk • 16:03, 9 August 2010 (UTC)

I asked at WP:N/N and they said since it doesn't have coverage outside of Virginia just yet, it is probably best to put it on a related page like Garage sale, so I put it on Garage sale#Route 11 Yard Crawl. Just a simple write up. The person also suggested putting it on U.S. Route 11 in Virginia. I did that as well. I don't think the latter will stick, but the former will. I wikilinked the new section to the Stephens City page as well. - NeutralhomerTalk • 19:23, 9 August 2010 (UTC)
I guess the only likelihood I see is that the editors of an article might decide that if everybody adds their local crawl, it will overwhelm the article, but even then I suspect it would just be moved to a new article.--Wehwalt (talk) 19:33, 9 August 2010 (UTC)
"Virginia is for Junk"....oh, that one was good :) Nicely done. Yeah, I figure it will be on the Garage sale page, which I am fine with, at least it is somewhere I can link. - NeutralhomerTalk • 19:51, 9 August 2010 (UTC)

Hey, just in case you missed it, there is an oppurtunity to get a free dinner this Tuesday August 11 and a chance to meet and hang out talk about Wikipedia:WikiProject United States Public Policy and WP:GLAM/SI. Sorry that this is so late in the game, I was hoping the e-mail would be a better form of contact for active members (if you want to get on the e-mail list send me an User e-mail ). Hope that you can attend, User:Sadads (talk)12:42, 9 August 2010 (UTC)

If there were more people coming, I think I would make the effort, but with the short notice and having to get up very early the next day, I think I will take a raincheck.--Wehwalt (talk) 14:54, 9 August 2010 (UTC)

Statue of Liberty images

With the disclaimer that I'm a dreadful photographer (profound understatement), I've uploaded images I'm willing to share to Flickr here, with the exception of File:Statue of Liberty 6.jpg, which went to the Commons because it was too large for Flickr. If you think any would be useful, let me know and I'll switch the license(s) to a wiki-compatible version (they're currently fully copyrighted) so they can be transferred over. Given the article's current illustration, these are the ones that might be most helpful (as aspects not yet/well depicted): the inside of her face [11], detail of the plates [12], detail of the exterior [13], pedestal as the subject [14]. There are also images of the inside of the crown and the structural supports, but space and proper lighting were scarce in that copper inferno, so their quality is particularly bad. Эlcobbola talk 14:37, 9 August 2010 (UTC)

Actually they are quite good. Could you trim the first one on Flikr so that it the bottom is just below the base (Fort Wood) and the top just a bit above the flame, with the sides trimmed to proportion, keeping the statue centered? There is actually a ventilation system inside the statue, but there are limits to what it can do. Air conditioning is impossible because there would be huge condensation issues on the outside of the statue ... if I go myself, it will be in November, I've been keeping an eye on the ticket situation. Do you have to climb the whole stairwell in one shot or does the ranger have the group stop now and then?--Wehwalt (talk) 14:49, 9 August 2010 (UTC)
Sure, I'll trim the image and upload it to the Commons once I return to a computer with Photoshop. The climb was entirely unsupervised, so you're free to go at your own pace - there wasn't even a ranger in the crown (they just really stress pacing yourself in the pre-climb speech). There are several "landings" (2 or 3), so it is possible to stop without blocking the ever-narrowing staircase; it's rather reminiscent of Willy Wonka's factory. Эlcobbola talk 15:02, 9 August 2010 (UTC)
As opposed to the Leaning Tower of Pisa, where you have to keep up with the group and I arrived (in last place) at the top, a bit the worse for wear. Ah, for the days when I was 13 and climbed the Bunker Hill Monument without a second thought.--Wehwalt (talk) 15:20, 9 August 2010 (UTC)
Assuming you see what I see, the first one is DSC01283; I've cropped and uploaded it here. Let me know if I've misinterpreted cropping instructions. Эlcobbola talk 23:08, 9 August 2010 (UTC)
Looks good to me. I love the way it makes the torch look like real flame. It's now the lead image.--Wehwalt (talk) 23:12, 9 August 2010 (UTC)

Logical quotation

I'm rather amazed that you could interpret a discussion of period placement as a bothersome reflection on your "hard work", let alone the "appropriateness of words that [you] had written". (Note that those quote marks are not present to cast doubt, simply to indicate that those are your own words, quoted. Though "what remains" was very funny.) Did it not occur to you that I might have launched the thread in order to make the conclusion of the FAC process for Statue of Liberty as smooth as possible?

I had noticed a couple cases in FAC where a late WP:MOS/WP:PUNC/WP:LQ red flag was raised over articles in which quoted sentence fragments had periods inside the quote marks. Most pertinently, it has seemed to me that Sandy prefers having all such periods placed outside the quote marks. I launched the thread to see if any consensus had emerged on the matter and/or to see if I could draw a definitive statement from Sandy on her view (while not making the thread about her). Apparently, you find it difficult to believe I might be trying to be helpful and would rather complain about notification failures and take to the ramparts to defend your "view that the article is FA worthy" (again, not doubt—quotation). Given that, I'm happy to drop out of the process right now, and if there's anything to hash out with Sandy, you can handle that to your satisfaction, alone.—DCGeist (talk) 21:09, 9 August 2010 (UTC)

I don't have a view, other than trying to avoid most MOS wars lately, as they are such a timesink. I do sample edits of trivial MOS items in the hopes other editors will learn to read and review for MOS issues. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 21:13, 9 August 2010 (UTC)
Well, I don't think it is a question of dropping out of the process. You had indicated that you had no further issues, and over the past 24 hours, you've brought up repeated matters. There is a point of diminishing returns in this game, and I think it has been reached, and that the article should simply be submitted to the judgment of the delegates. I think community consensus in favor of promotion is reached. If I have seemed frustrated, and I probably did, it is because of that situation. I think the article should be promoted, at least that is my view, which moots any question of "process". I will certainly respect any consensus that is reached on MOS issues, but I would like to hear more voices than just you and Malleus.--Wehwalt (talk) 21:18, 9 August 2010 (UTC)
I will also add, no, I did not think that was the reason you launched that thread. And frankly, given that I am the nominator and perhaps should be heard from now and again, you might have wanted to enlighten me. I think there has been poor communication on both sides in this. Let's wrap it up and move on.--Wehwalt (talk) 21:20, 9 August 2010 (UTC)

Signature problem

Can you give me a spot of advice?. I have just uploaded Nansen's signature, as File:Nansen, Fridtjof signature.jpg under a PD-ineligible licence, as per Dief the Chief. Yet the licence gives a redlink - what am I doing wrong? Brianboulton (talk) 21:27, 9 August 2010 (UTC)

I think you are trying to use a Commons license on a en-wiki upload.--Wehwalt (talk) 21:29, 9 August 2010 (UTC)
Lady Liberty apparently made a Wehwalt stalker. You need only be less modest; use more "ornate" brackets. Эlcobbola talk 21:34, 9 August 2010 (UTC)
Shows what I know.--Wehwalt (talk) 21:48, 9 August 2010 (UTC)

Do you agree with the statements of YellowMonkey on the above page? --William S. Saturn (talk) 05:17, 9 August 2010 (UTC)

No idea. Will look at it later in the day and post as seems appropriate. I haven't ben following it closely, thanks for the heads-up.--Wehwalt (talk) 12:48, 9 August 2010 (UTC)
I looked at it. I am not sure. I want to look at it in depth. I hope to respond later in the day but it may not be until tomorrow.--Wehwalt (talk) 14:53, 9 August 2010 (UTC)
The reason I am asking is because I am considering withdrawing the nomination so that a different article can be nominated.--William S. Saturn (talk) 23:47, 10 August 2010 (UTC)

Next Project?

Out of curiosity, what are you up to next? Any way I can help out? Connormahtalk 02:05, 10 August 2010 (UTC)

I've promised White Shadows to work with him on Robert E. Lee, but he is not home until Thursday, so I'm trying to churn out a few quick articles Liberty Bell , Liberty Head nickel, and Princess Charlotte of Wales. I don't have all my sources yet on the last two so I am concentrating on the Bell. I can't think of anything you can help with right now (thank you for the offer) but I will surely ask you if I think of something. If you think of something, please let me know, I am always grateful for your help.--Wehwalt (talk) 02:09, 10 August 2010 (UTC)
Might I suggest that you also (possibly at the same time) update (or just tinker) with the sad sub-stub Non incautus futuri. It means "Not Unmindful of the Future" and is the motto of the Lee family and Lee's Washington and Lee University as well as a plantation and a town. Might be worth updating at the same time. - NeutralhomerTalk • 02:46, 10 August 2010 (UTC)
Also another thing: Will you have anything for Canada Day next year? ;) Connormahtalk 18:51, 10 August 2010 (UTC)
Well, I'll look for something in Saskatoon worth doing, I guess Canadian federal election, 1957 won't do?--Wehwalt (talk) 19:18, 10 August 2010 (UTC)
You have any ideas, whether or not available in Saskatoon? I won't do Pearson and think Trudeau would be too complicated. I wouldn't mind doing King, but it would be hard to keep inside of a reasonable limit ...--Wehwalt (talk) 19:27, 10 August 2010 (UTC)
How about one of the earlier ones (or a Father of Confederation)? Macdonald, Mackenzie, Laurier...? Maybe a Premier of Saskatchewan? Just some random ideas, though. Connormahtalk 21:46, 10 August 2010 (UTC)
BTW, I've got an article at Template talk:Did you know (Bryan Hall). Could you maybe take a look over it? Connormahtalk 21:48, 10 August 2010 (UTC)
Got to be someone with a reasonable number of books written about him. Yes, Macdonald would be a possibility. And it ties in well with Dief, who admired Macdonald, and collected his relics. In fact, the less kind said that Dief obviously collected Macdonald's suits ... images won't be as much of a problem as with Dief. If they exist, and were taken in Canada, they are PD, no argument about it.--Wehwalt (talk) 21:54, 10 August 2010 (UTC)
I verified the DYK and made a few minor changes. You might want to proofread it carefully.--Wehwalt (talk) 21:59, 10 August 2010 (UTC)
I can help with Macdonald images if you need - but it really sucks how the Library and Archives of Canada don't provide high resolution versions of images. Also, I'm a bit familiar with the DYK process - what's next in the process? Connormahtalk 22:06, 10 August 2010 (UTC)
Nothing. Just let it sit, in a few days it will appear.--Wehwalt (talk) 22:18, 10 August 2010 (UTC)

Actually, I am hearing it might be a week or so before things appear. There are alot of DYKs in the mill, so it will be a wait. - NeutralhomerTalk • 22:21, 10 August 2010 (UTC)

Ah, thanks. Connormahtalk 22:25, 10 August 2010 (UTC)

If you don't mind a talkpage stalker asking a question, Wehwalt, how do you decide which article to work on next? Do you have a list of articles, or is it just the next one that takes your fancy? IU only ask as you've worked on quite an eclectic bunch of article - Tosca, Chamberlain, Menzies, Statue of Liberty etc. Skinny87 (talk) 09:42, 11 August 2010 (UTC)

You mean Whitlam, not Menzies. Usually something catches my attention, say an exhibit at an airport or a book on the subject and I wonder what the WP article is like. There have to be a fair number of resources available on the subject, or it's a real pain in the butt to manage an article. If possible, it's good if it is an article that gets a fair number of page views so I can help out the public, but that doesn't stop me from doing aritcles that will never average 100 a day. By way of example, I picked Whitlam because there were a fair number of books on the subject when I visited Australia, I had been interested in the constitutional crisis, and when I went to Canberra years ago, I had bought a T shirt with Whitlam's famous "Well may we say God Save the Queen, because nothing will save the Governor General." And I don't want to repeat myself, so I won't do cookiecutter articles. Every article is handcrafted, or I lose the challenge of it.--Wehwalt (talk) 09:48, 11 August 2010 (UTC)
Whoops, Whitlam indeed, my bad. I thought it might be something like that - thanks for the answer. Skinny87 (talk) 09:52, 11 August 2010 (UTC)

Viva la liberta

I see the statue has made it, many congratulations. I make that the second you have got promoted since Tosca, while I have struggled to get Nansen to peer review - and find even then that I am queueing behind yet another of your historical monographs. Your industry remains a matter of abiding wonder to your host of awed admirers. Brianboulton (talk) 17:46, 13 August 2010 (UTC)

Nansen is a complicated article, and I'm taking the easy way out with relatively simple articles, in a way. But thank you for your congratulations. I am writing several short articles right now to keep my slot at FAC busy while I turn to more complex things. But thanks for the praise. Let me know when Nansen is ready for constructive criticism.--Wehwalt (talk) 17:51, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
My congratulations as well. I'm most appreciative that the nomination coincided with my visit; it made for a richer experience, to be sure. Serendipity aside, I don't know how either of you manage such a pace (I'm at about one every 1,5 years), Indeed, a thing of awe. Эlcobbola talk 18:08, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
Thanks. I write with more confidence now that I am comfortable that others regard my writing well.--Wehwalt (talk) 18:09, 13 August 2010 (UTC)

Stephens City FAC (Part Eleventy Billion)

Well, looks like Karanacs will be doing promotions tomorrow (Wednesday)...bummer. I was kinda getting anxious about it getting passed. Another day, another day. Just thought I would give you an update. Aren't you going to be glad when this thing is over so you will never have to hear from me again? :D Take Care...NeutralhomerTalk • 03:33, 11 August 2010 (UTC)

I see you are in luck, Fasach Nua struck his oppose.--Wehwalt (talk) 08:48, 11 August 2010 (UTC)
I just noticed that myself (was still asleep when you posted). Hopefully with that, it should pass today...I will be holding my breath most of the day. Expect a blue NH by afternoon. - NeutralhomerTalk • 11:59, 11 August 2010 (UTC)
Hey Wehwalt, well, I got reviewed and it wasn't what I was expecting. Apparently I had some reference problems (mostly italicizing incorrectly) but more importantly, prose problems. So, since fresh eyes help, is there anyway you could go through the article piece by piece and check it for prose. User:SandyGeorgia said she will check it again on Saturday. Sorry to put you in a position (especially with your own FAC up for promotion), but I don't know who else to ask. Thanks...NeutralhomerTalk • 05:07, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
Since you indicated at the start of the FAC that I vouched for it, I do not think my copyediting it will add to its promotability. Suggest fresh eyes. How about Dabomb87? He's about to run for admin and probably feels like being nice to everyone!--Wehwalt (talk) 14:19, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, I have seen him popup a couple times on the page, did last night. I will ask him, hopefully he will be able to help. Thanks...NeutralhomerTalk • 15:07, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
I'm glad you have such faith in my kindness, Wehwalt :) Dabomb87 (talk) 15:29, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
If I didn't, I would not have said it publicly, and certainly not to an editor who appears to think my name is an imprimatur!--Wehwalt (talk) 15:31, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
Just wanted to give you an update. Dabomb87 gave it a through once-over as did SandyGeorgia. I had some NBSP tagging issues, but those have been taken care of (I hope). Thanks for recommending Dabomb87. :) Hope your day is going well, darned soggy here. - NeutralhomerTalk • 18:07, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
It's just a question of learning the rules and practices; my initial FACs were fairly ugly.--Wehwalt (talk) 18:10, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
I wouldn't call this "ugly", but just through since I am a newbie. :) Oh, perhaps you could take a look at something for me. My last couple edits to the Stephens City page were for   additions, but I kinda overdid it, because I wasn't sure where to put the   tag. Could you check those and see where I over did it? I think the overuse was in the putting it between the number and precentage sign and other places, I was really trying to put it in all places I thought needed it. :S I really am not good nor knowledgable with the   tag. - NeutralhomerTalk • 18:47, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
Just lighting the above post up again. - NeutralhomerTalk • 19:30, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
I think Sandy took care of it. nbsp is not customarily used in dates. What I often do when I'm confused about a point is search through recently promoted FAs and see how it is done in other articles (don't use older FAs, standards are definitely higher). I'm sometimes tripping over that policy, it wasn't until I did 1975 Australian constitutional crisis that I realized it covered times.--Wehwalt (talk) 19:37, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
Oh, OK....cause I was using it by dates (between the day and year), between the number and precentage and other pages, cause I thought so....but if she took care of it, I guess it is good. :) - NeutralhomerTalk • 19:42, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
It's just one of those hoops you have to jump through.--Wehwalt (talk) 19:45, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
Nope, I didn't check them all-- did sample edits only, when I saw too many NBSPs. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 19:45, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
OK, the major question, are they required between the number and precentage sign? I even questioned that when I was adding them, but didn't want to have to go back. I will take some out and we can go from there. Sorry, I know I have said it, but noob mistake. - NeutralhomerTalk • 19:51, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
No, but there should be no space between the number and percentage sign.--Wehwalt (talk) 19:55, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
My goof, work to do. Thanks. - NeutralhomerTalk • 19:58, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
As visible to the world, twice (search for %) in the constitutional crisis article ...verb. sap.--Wehwalt (talk) 20:05, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
I checked the article, but also seen a potential problem. In several instances, the times are written out as "1.00 p.m." instead of "1:00 p.m.". Might want to correct that. I have made several corrections to the Stephens City article, leaving some of the hard spaces in, but taking most (around the precentages) out. - NeutralhomerTalk • 20:25, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
That article is written in Australian English, and 1.00 is how time is expressed in Australia.--Wehwalt (talk) 20:42, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
I had a feeling that was the case, but wanted to make sure. :) - NeutralhomerTalk • 20:45, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, I'm not that dumb.--Wehwalt (talk) 20:47, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
You should see some of the mistakes I have made. :) They are some doozies. :) But I had a feeling that it was the Aussie way of telling time. I know the French don't write out the "point" in radio station dials. Here it is "98.7", there it is "98,7"...odd, eh? So, the world has it's own way of writing things. :) - NeutralhomerTalk • 20:51, 13 August 2010 (UTC)

Coin Images

I was thinking of uploading new ones with transparent backgrounds, such as something like this, but I've noticed that the colors are a bit different here, or something like these: [15] and [16] - what do you think? Connormah 18:04, 13 August 2010 (UTC)

I think it is just tarnish, or whatever the detritus of 150 years of existence is called. It is considered taboo for coin collectors to clean coins of such things. For sure, if they are clearer, upload them. The same goes for Liberty Head nickels, which I also intend to do as my references cover both types. Many thanks.--Wehwalt (talk) 18:09, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
Sounds good - I'll see what I can do. Good luck with the FAC(s). Connormah 18:15, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
Another thing before uploading - what color were the nickels? Both images I've found have different colors, one silver and one a penny copperish tone - which one do you think would be better. Connormah 18:18, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
Exactly the same as an American nickel from today, they use the exact same compostion.--Wehwalt (talk) 18:21, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
Alright - done. I'm thinking of maybe expanding Longacre's article in the next couple days - possibly to get another DYK. Hopefully I can find sufficient sources. Connormah 18:49, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
Many thanks. Can we co-do the DYK? I have two references with biographical sketches of Longacre.--Wehwalt (talk) 19:04, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
Sure, that'd be good. I found a site with another sketch from a Google search, but you might need to mind by limited writing skills :) Connormah 19:11, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
I'll start with a bit a bit later today - I'm not all that good though, so as I said above, mind my poor writing skills :). Connormah 19:46, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
On second thought, maybe I'll try and give Christian Gobrecht a stab at expansion, and leave Longacre to you, as you seem to have way more sources then I do :) Connormah 22:03, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
Sounds good. It is the same sources as the nickel ...--Wehwalt (talk) 22:10, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
Alright, nice job BTW with Longacre - it looks much better. Any chance of that there's a death place to fill up the field in the infobox? Connormah 22:18, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
Not terribly surprised at the place of death.--Wehwalt (talk) 22:24, 13 August 2010 (UTC)

Thanks, as always. Connormah 22:25, 13 August 2010 (UTC)

The Taxay book has info on Gobrecht, so let me know if you need holes filled.--Wehwalt (talk) 22:27, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
It's a bit weird - the web page I found for Longacre [17] seems a bit similar to one of your books - is the Gobrecht page similar as well? Connormah 22:33, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
Which book, do you think? Because the discussion of Gobrecht in Taxay's book doesn't seem similar.--Wehwalt (talk) 22:43, 13 August 2010 (UTC)

I'm ready to get to work on him. I've got all my sources on the Civil War on hand. Should we submit this to GA first or go straight to FAC or possibly ACR?--White Shadows Nobody said it was easy 19:51, 13 August 2010 (UTC)

OK, good. I'll be on it tomorrow afternoon. Let's see how things go, but GAN is such a time consumer these days!--Wehwalt (talk) 22:09, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
Don't forget to add Non incautus futuri, the Latin saying on the crest of the Lee family shield and of Washington and Lee University. - NeutralhomerTalk • 22:31, 13 August 2010 (UTC)

Gobrecht

I've done what I can - could you possibly expand it more on another ref, then submit it to DYK? Thanks. Connormah 23:57, 13 August 2010 (UTC)

Thanks - much, much appreciated. Are you going to get Longacre at DYK soon also, or do you think 2 chief engravers would be a bit lacking in variety? :) Connormah 01:00, 14 August 2010 (UTC)
I made it a dual with Shield nickel.--Wehwalt (talk) 01:05, 14 August 2010 (UTC)
Ah, nice idea there. I'm going to try expand Kneass tomorrow - do you have a sketch in your book that you could offer help again? Thanks. Connormah 01:13, 14 August 2010 (UTC)
Another thing - can (and should) the stub templates be removed from Longacre and Gobrecht's articles? Connormah 01:16, 14 August 2010 (UTC)
Yes, I think you should remove the templates. Stubs are ineligible for DYK and they are clearly not stubs anymore. Doesn't say that much about Kneass, mostly about his work at the mint in the early 1830s. Less than with Gobrecht. Still, worth a try.--Wehwalt (talk) 01:19, 14 August 2010 (UTC)
For sure Barber is worth doing. And Morgan.--Wehwalt (talk) 01:55, 14 August 2010 (UTC)
Which Barber? :) Anyways - I think there's enough for Kneass for an at least decent expansion - I'm on it now. Connormah 02:31, 14 August 2010 (UTC)

I've done what I can with all I've got for Kneass - can you check if here's anything in your book that isn't already there? I'll nom it at DYK once you're done, hopefully I can get a good hook.. Thanks in advance. Connormah 03:06, 14 August 2010 (UTC)

Good luck with the Liberty Bell FAC too, by the way. :) Connormah 22:12, 14 August 2010 (UTC)
Thanks. I nommed that first because I wanted to see if the coin image would draw any fire. I will get to Kneass in a little bit.--Wehwalt (talk) 22:13, 14 August 2010 (UTC)
Thanks - I'll get Kneass to DYK shortly. Connormah 22:59, 14 August 2010 (UTC)
Already there but feel free to change it.--Wehwalt (talk) 23:03, 14 August 2010 (UTC)
Thanks - I'll maybe look into Barber if I get time - which one were you referring to above? Connormah 23:06, 14 August 2010 (UTC)
Charles, interesting fellow, he was Chief Engraver for 40 years, and did some of the ugliest coins in American history.--Wehwalt (talk) 23:08, 14 August 2010 (UTC)
Sounds interesting - I'll definitely look into it. Connormah 23:10, 14 August 2010 (UTC)
I have plenty of material on him.--Wehwalt (talk) 23:16, 14 August 2010 (UTC)
Maybe we could do something like the Longcre one - you primarily write it, if you have time (as you have more sources than I probably do)? Connormah 23:17, 14 August 2010 (UTC)
Maybe you could add images and write the DYK and add anything you can from websites. I'll take some time tomorrow--Wehwalt (talk) 23:21, 14 August 2010 (UTC)
Sure. Is Lee the current primary project now, though? Connormah 23:27, 14 August 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, though I will probably write Liberty head nickel (A Barber work) at some stage soon. I'm trying to pound them out while I have the time now. Starting next week (Aug 24) I won't be home a lot for about three weeks.--Wehwalt (talk) 23:30, 14 August 2010 (UTC)

When do you think the Shield nickel will be at FAC? Connormah 23:38, 14 August 2010 (UTC)

After Liberty Bell clears the page. I've also got Princess Charlotte of Wales going, but don't have all my references yet.--Wehwalt (talk) 23:39, 14 August 2010 (UTC)
I'll try and search for a signature for Charlotte - shouldn't be that hard. Taking a break from the politicians now, I see? :) Connormah 23:47, 14 August 2010 (UTC)

FAC reviews lacking

I'm looking at it.--Wehwalt (talk) 13:38, 15 August 2010 (UTC)

Liberty

Sure thing. It's a very enjoyable article. Best, Dan.—DCGeist (talk) 22:33, 7 August 2010 (UTC)

Thanks, and thanks for your work.--Wehwalt (talk) 12:45, 9 August 2010 (UTC)
Congratulations to you, Wehwalt. It is a superb article, an example of what makes Wikipedia great. It was lots of fun collaborating, I hope we'll work together in the future. Kaisershatner (talk) 00:07, 16 August 2010 (UTC)
You would be very welcome. Feel free to stalk me.--Wehwalt (talk) 00:09, 16 August 2010 (UTC)

Question on How to Source Something

A user pointed something out the last line in the "Religion" section which reads: "Other religious organizations are located outside the town limits, including Catholic, Jewish, and Muslim bodies which are located about 5 miles (8.0 km) to the north in Winchester, Virginia." The whole thing is unsourced. So, I am wondering, since I can't find a source that lists all the churches in Winchester (like I can with Stephens City), should I link to each individual church and put it beside the religion or what? - NeutralhomerTalk • 01:44, 14 August 2010 (UTC)

I guess so. I can't think of a better way, really.--Wehwalt (talk) 01:50, 14 August 2010 (UTC)
Personally, neither could I. I wished there was a group website like Stephens City has, but in all of the sites about the town, operated by an actual person and where you couldn't just "add a link", no exsisted. Thanks for your help though. :) - NeutralhomerTalk • 02:19, 14 August 2010 (UTC)
Yes, I will do Nixon but not sure when, and I probably won't do anything about Macdonald for a while yet.--Wehwalt (talk) 23:51, 14 August 2010 (UTC)
Righty - would Macdonald possibly be done before July 1 next year? :) Connormah 23:54, 14 August 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, for sure. That is the idea.--Wehwalt (talk) 23:56, 14 August 2010 (UTC)
I'm actually considering possibly working on Mackenzie Bowell or Matthew McCauley (politician) to expand and possibly achieve GA status - not entirely sure yet. Connormah 00:01, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
I like this random thread. From Stephens City to Nixon to some McDonald person to Mackenzie Bowell and Matthew McCauley. Quite random. :) - NeutralhomerTalk • 00:03, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
Some McDonald person? :) Connormah 00:06, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
Sorry, "Macdonald". :) - NeutralhomerTalk • 00:10, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
It all depends what I can pick up; there's this bookstore I like in Vancouver, I'll drop in there while I am in the city. If there are good sources on someone more interesting ...--Wehwalt (talk) 00:12, 15 August 2010 (UTC)

Are you in Vancouver around the same time as when you're in Saskatchewan? Connormah 00:14, 15 August 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, same trip.--Wehwalt (talk) 00:19, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
Have fun - it's really nice up here (usually) during that time. Connormah 00:21, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
Yes, I was in Alberta last November. Shudder.--Wehwalt (talk) 00:22, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
I'm in Alberta also - the early and late snowfalls only come here :) - we had one last June. Connormah 00:27, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
Why are you headed to Canada...fun, vacation or GP? - NeutralhomerTalk • 00:28, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
Vacation mostly ... yes, I know about Alberta ... and yet when I was there for the 88 Olympics they had to stop the bobleding, it was too warm.--Wehwalt (talk) 00:33, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
Is it just Vancouver and Saskatchewan stops this time? Connormah 00:37, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
Yes, I am afraid so. Flyover land for you, I fear.--Wehwalt (talk) 00:39, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
What are you planning on doing in Saskatchewan? Just visit the Dief Library? Connormah 00:43, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
I do have a Riders game on the schedule.--Wehwalt (talk) 00:45, 15 August 2010 (UTC)

Out of curiosity (since Dief is already at FA), what are you planning to do at the Dief Library? Connormah 00:49, 15 August 2010 (UTC)

58 election, perhaps the family members, there is nothing on his brother or parents. See where research carries me. Images.--Wehwalt (talk) 00:51, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
You planning to do something with the 58 election page? Connormah 01:06, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
I would like to, so it would match the 57 page at FA. But no one wrote a book about it like they did the 57 election, so I need to see if there are party reports or enough contemporaneous clippings to get by.--Wehwalt (talk) 01:08, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
I missed your comment on Bowell and so forth, when you do that, let me know if I can do anything to help.--Wehwalt (talk) 01:23, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
IIRC Bowell was the oldest PM, so it may be interesting, but I'm not sure yet. Connormah 01:53, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
In my sandbox, there is a list of "oldest living PMs" but I haven't gotten around to do anything with it. I will probably not do anything about Barber until Tues or Wed now. I have been a bit lazy today.--Wehwalt (talk) 22:54, 15 August 2010 (UTC)

Re: Congrats!

Thanks! :) Now I just gotta figure out how to write an TFA. Do look at the very bottom of the FAC for a note directed at everyone who helped on this project. I do have one question...who does the honors on switching the page over? Should you, SandyGeorgia, me, an admin, Raul654? I don't want to start on the TFA until it is officially switched over. - NeutralhomerTalk • 17:43, 15 August 2010 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) Isn't it a bot that adds the FA star (assuming that's what you mean)? Connormah 17:44, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
I guess...on GA, someone just added it manually and switched over the talkpage templates. This is my first FA, so I don't know how it differs. - NeutralhomerTalk • 17:47, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
Yes, it will appear within 24 hours and the article history will be updated. You can request a TFA by following the rules at WP:TFA/R.--Wehwalt (talk) 17:48, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
OK, so I can request a TFA now, even though the bot hasn't come around yet? Just want to make sure before I go to work. - NeutralhomerTalk • 17:50, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
Yes, it has been added to WP:FA by a FA delegate, that makes it a FA.--Wehwalt (talk) 17:51, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
OK...*deep breath*...to TFA/R I go. :) Thanks. - NeutralhomerTalk • 17:52, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
Now if only my first FAC were to get a move on!--White Shadows Nobody said it was easy 17:56, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
Oh, well. I'll put some time in on Lee today. Don't expect much tomorrow or Tuesday, I am going up to New Jersey for the first football game at the new Meadowlands (I am a Jets season ticket holder). I may take a ref or two with me and edit at my hotel before I go to the stadium.--Wehwalt (talk) 18:06, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
TFA/R is up. It is short and sweet, actually shorter than the other TFA/Rs. I had to take September 2, instead of my perfered September 1 (the 252nd anniversary of the town's charter in 1758), but that's OK. - NeutralhomerTalk • 18:21, 15 August 2010 (UTC)

As always, let me know if I can help with anything for Lee. Connormah 18:27, 15 August 2010 (UTC)

"Story in the newspaper", funny you should say that, a friend of mine wants to call the local newspaper if (being that word) the article makes the front page. I highly doubt the local press will give a damn about something going on on a website, but it would be nice, but I am not holding my breath on that one. :) - NeutralhomerTalk • 20:36, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
Never hurts to publicize the project.--Wehwalt (talk) 20:45, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
Well, this is true. My main worry, is if I would be in the paper, I would essentially "out" myself, since it wouldn't be hard to connect the dots there. So I don't think I will do that. They can write it up, no problem, but they could interview me via my Wikipedia email account, not in person. :) - NeutralhomerTalk • 20:50, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
Another question...about how long does a TFA/R take? I like to hang around in case I am needed, but if it could sit for days on end, I can go and take care of other things on the internet. Just curious. - NeutralhomerTalk • 22:41, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
Raul probably won't schedule that date until Labor Day. The article could bet "bumped" but you can always renominate it when there's a vacancy. Or just put it in the nonspecific slot when that opens up, then it is very likely to be assigned, but there is no control over what date.--Wehwalt (talk) 22:44, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
OK, so I probably shouldn't set here and keep clicking the refresh button waiting for something to happen like with the FAC. :) OK, off to Facebook I go. I have neglected my Facebook page in the past month or so. - NeutralhomerTalk • 22:47, 15 August 2010 (UTC)

For You

For your help and hard work on the article, I present you the below userbox. Thanks! - NeutralhomerTalk • 02:50, 16 August 2010 (UTC)

Appreciate the thought.--Wehwalt (talk) 16:22, 16 August 2010 (UTC)

Kneass

The DYK nom was reviewed, and it was apparently only 3.8x - I'm not sure I can do much more, I assume it's the same story for you? Connormah 14:56, 16 August 2010 (UTC)

Well, I have one more book coming, which might have something on the guy. Let's either not reply or say we are looking for more material. They won't remove the nom for several days at least, esp with DYK so backed up.--Wehwalt (talk) 16:22, 16 August 2010 (UTC)

A DYK Question

My Peter Stephens (pioneer) DYK entry was "verified" earlier today. What exactly does that mean? - NeutralhomerTalk • 20:46, 16 August 2010 (UTC)

It means that someone checked to see that the article met the DYK rules, most likely just checked length, that you started the article, and began it on the day you said you did.
Ah, gotcha. I thought that meant it was added to the queue. My goof. OK, thanks. :) - NeutralhomerTalk • 21:05, 16 August 2010 (UTC)
No, when someone takes it off TT:DYK, then look for it on the queue page.--Wehwalt (talk) 21:06, 16 August 2010 (UTC)
Ah, gotcha. :) I will look for that to come. I have the TT:DYK page on my watchlist, so I always check in case they need my input. Thanks for the help. :) - NeutralhomerTalk • 21:08, 16 August 2010 (UTC)

Sorry Wehwalt, but your X is in another castle

Wrong "X" ;p [18] Thanks for the reply. I'm just there as a participant, since I already opined. –xenotalk 21:07, 16 August 2010 (UTC)

Six of one ...--Wehwalt (talk) 21:18, 16 August 2010 (UTC)

I'm having some image issues here. EVERY image from the Type UB I has no author as he/she is simply unknown....--White Shadows Nobody said it was easy 00:21, 17 August 2010 (UTC)

I will have to look at it, it won't be today, I'm tired and am just wrapping up replies and a few easy things on Liberty Bell before going to sleep.--Wehwalt (talk) 02:47, 17 August 2010 (UTC)
Thanks. I've looked at every image on commons of the UB Is and, sigh, they all are without an author.....--White Shadows Nobody said it was easy 02:51, 17 August 2010 (UTC)
Can you show where it came from? Are you familiar with this?--Wehwalt (talk) 03:16, 17 August 2010 (UTC)

Great work on this article! I really enjoyed reading it. Theleftorium (talk) 09:41, 17 August 2010 (UTC)

Thanks!--Wehwalt (talk) 09:54, 17 August 2010 (UTC)

Poor Man's Talkback

Please see the far bottom of my talk page under the "Religion" header. Thanks. - NeutralhomerTalk • 03:53, 17 August 2010 (UTC)

JonRidinger has also tinkered with the section and made it even better (lots better in my opinion). So give the above link a look at your leisure in the morning, if you think it is ready, just copy/paste the whole thing into the "Religion" section on the Stephens City page over the existing section. No worries from me. Take Care...NeutralhomerTalk • 04:57, 17 August 2010 (UTC)
Just lightning this up again. - NeutralhomerTalk • 17:26, 17 August 2010 (UTC)
Since you are offline, I messaged Finetooth and he took a look and along with JonRidinger's OK on it, I put it into practice at Stephens City, Virginia#Religion. If you feel anything needs to be tinkered, added, removed or edited, please let me know. Take Care...NeutralhomerTalk • 23:16, 17 August 2010 (UTC)

Our old friend is back

That banned user (Techwriter2B, 75.2, 64.252, etc.) is back and has posted a complaint at ANI [19].Eurytemora (talk) 21:40, 17 August 2010 (UTC)

Another DYK Question

I am a little confused in something. The Peter Stephens hook was in Prep 1 and scheduled for 8pm EST/0 UTC. But the hook is up. It has been moved to Queue/1 and no time is given. I am confused why it got bumped. - NeutralhomerTalk • 00:26, 18 August 2010 (UTC)

No idea but not worth making a fuss over. Put the champagne on ice.--Wehwalt (talk) 00:28, 18 August 2010 (UTC)
Okie Dokie...no really fussable, just more confused than anything. :) No champagne at my house, but I do have Pepsi, which I could put in a glass. :) Cheers! *tink* - NeutralhomerTalk • 00:36, 18 August 2010 (UTC)
