I'm ready to wrap up this review in a way that says I've done my basic review, and it can be promoted as such, or an ALT hook can be suggested. I certainly think there can be other hooks, but I don't want to hold up the review that way. The one open item can be found on the template, which is a sentence I believe needs to be sourced. I am very sorry to hear that if true, there aren't many good editors for WV history. I am adding a subsection to the History of Slavery in WV regarding how the Emancipation Proclamation and the Willey Amendment worked together and how it affected the status of the slave population. Valley PO data in Hampshire County WV

Hey there, you found an oldy BUT a goody. The USPS Post Master Finder has no research data on that PO..BUT, GNIS DETAIL data has a cool source here. The inline citation refers to the micro film roll which will have the PO application. I know of the Raleigh County data by heart, BUT looks like the citation data on the GNIS detail page has roll 641.... The GNIS ref number for this PO should be substantial enough. HOWEVER, for a populated place.......I will look a bit more .Coal town guy (talk) 14:58, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

I found THIS Do you want me to contact GNIS and have them add Valley the formerly populated place to their database, the requirement on their end would be a map showing a relative location and of course a place name showing the nomen of Valley....It usually takes about a week plus for them to add a place name in GNIS.....I know a few people there by now, so let me know what you think?Coal town guy (talk) 15:04, 13 January 2014 (UTC)
  • Hey Coal town guy, I did indeed! I decided to begin my populated place articles with Valley because it was in close proximity to Valley View, an article I recently completed and have nominated for GA review. If you wouldn't mind, that would be wonderful to have Valley added to GNIS as a populated place, in addition to being listed as a historic post office. The only challenge will be that its possible and probable that Valley, MIGHT be considered to be part of Romney...OR, it will be a historical place....It may take a 7+ day time period to get an answer, BUT I am on it. I had some successes with about 8 places so far in WV........In fact, I believe Chapman, West Virginia is close (ish) to there and I had that one added last yearCoal town guy (talk) 14:56, 15 January 2014 (UTC)

It will probably qualify as a "historical place," which is the most accurate category as it lies within the present-day corporate boundaries of Romney. UPDATE, the folks at GNIS believe this should be a seperate historical community, no timeline on when it would be added to GNIS with coordinates! NOTE, the PO coordinates probably will not happen, the micro film records rely on hand drawn maps which lack proportion in many cases. GNIS concurred as I have about 200 examples of PO applications from Raleigh and other WV counties...HOWEVER, the town proper will have them (coordinates) as the map link I provided does indeed have actual proportionsCoal town guy (talk) 15:09, 17 January 2014 (UTC)

Regarding the info on Koch Brothers, see for instance http://www.triplepundit.com/2014/01/koch-connection-west-virginia-chemical-spill-company/ It's not in the scope of the article to explore regulations and such but the affiliatiation is important enough to be mentioned, and since there is no dedicated wikipedia entry on FI.   • Prokaryotes, I appreciate your attention to this article, however, the mention of Koch Industries does indeed fall outside the article's scope, so it should not be included. This sort of information should be included in a Freedom Industries article, and just because one doesn't exist, it does not mean it has to be mentioned in this article. Again, I like your eye for detail, and I am usually an inclusionist, but in this case, I feel Koch Industries should be omitted. -- Caponer (talk) 13:19, 16 January 2014 (UTC)

It looks as though I'm going to be doing the GA review for Valley View. In view of that I'll withdraw my request that you look over the St. Leonard's article (which I launched into articlespace earlier today). This isn't because I don't value your opinion, but because it gives the impression that I'm soliciting favors in return for GAs. Just to avoid any appearance of un-Wikiethical conduct...
I drew up my list of suggestions for the VV article without specifically consulting the GA criteria, and stopped rather abruptly when Rosie notified me that I was encroaching on her turf. I'll try to conduct the actual GA review in a more systematic fashion, working on it in userspace before moving it over to the review page. The Virginia Argus review was getting difficult to follow toward the end, and I'm hoping that a more systematic layout will avoid that problem. Ammodramus (talk) 18:54, 18 January 2014 (UTC)

Saw your latest, Caponer (removal of quotes and capitalization in Collins Tract, etc.). I'm about to add another raft of suggestions. If you don't mind, I'm going to mix suggestions based on the GA criteria with things that I think might improve the article, but that aren't GA-critical. Feel free to question any or all of my suggestions; with luck, between us we can come up with a better article than either of us could have written solo.
I'll bullet-point my suggestions; could I suggest that you indent, but not use bullets, in your responses? (I've done this with the older set of suggestions.) That way, every bullet will start a short discussion of one point, and it'll be obvious which ones have been checked off and which haven't. If you're willing, we'll see how that works out. VALLEY WEST VIRGINIA IS ALIVE AND WELL

Hey there- I managed to get GNIS to update their database with the Valley Data. The GNIS ref 2746817 has all the data and coordinates......OF NOTE its being treated as a Historical comunity, I did indeed update the article with the new ref data. Thank you Coal town guy! I'm so incredibly thankful you were able to get Valley added to GNIS, and the "historical community" description fits Valley perfectly! My only concern is that the 1933 map did not place Valley in precisely the correct location, and since the GNIS used the map location, the coordinates are a bit off. I'll maintain the reference, but I'm going to revert the coordinates to the area described in Valley's POD location form. I'll have to track that down, and hope that will suffice for a correction for GNIS (I'm not sure how they usually go about this process). Also, because Valley is now located within Romney's corporate boundaries, I'm hesitant to label it a "ghost town." It was never as "town" so to speak, and there are still residents in its vicinity. It's not quite a neighborhood either, so I'm going to try and reconcile its populated place status in the meantime. Thank you again for everything, and let me know how to proceed with correcting the coordinates for GNIS! GOOD NEWS and BAD NEWS........GOOD NEWS, here is a link for proposing a name and a change to data for that name..BAD NEWS....I cant honestly say how quickly they would get to the change request for coordinates of a historic place. I did indeed speak with some kind folks there, the mission of the GNIS at this time is accuracy for current (read as non historic) locations. That being said, they do like being as comprehensive as they can, and so they help folks like me who show up with names. They are responsive, so, I would have at it...Just do not rely on a timely or non geologic time scale...MANY thanks for the star, it is appreciated..The reason I get a response on the new names, is that I have done it enough to where I am able to e mail a few folks and have a response. At this time, I still have over 100 WV names I would like to add, BUT, some of these places were so temporary, GNIS does not consider them per se.....Let me know if this helps, and fingers crossed about the DYK for sure.Coal town guy (talk) 16:06, 27 January 2014 (UTC)

I think it's definitely improved since GAR1. A few thoughts... History section: Every sentence doesn't need an inline citation. Architecture: "The cornice of the mansion is composed of moldings decorated with ornamentation" = bit clunky. Photos: Consider moving the 1916 portico photo to the history section and clustering the architectural renditions. Archaeological excavation: "At the behest of the city of Alexandria, the excavation of the Colross archaeological site began between March and June 2005" - be careful with the overuse of 'of' within a single sentence... there's at least 1 other where it occurs 3 times/sentence. If I have chance I'll look at it again but I'm working on a bunch of other things right now. --Rosiestep (talk) 15:55, 27 January 2014 (UTC)

I've changed the clunky sentence to read: "The mansion's cornice is composed of ornamented moldings." I've also cleaned up some of the usages "of." WikiCup 2014 January newsletter

The 2014 WikiCup is off to a flying start, with, at time of writing, 138 participants. The is the largest number of participants we have seen since 2010. If you are yet to join the competition, don't worry- the judges have agreed to keep the signups open for a few more days. By a wide margin, our current leader is newcomer Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions), whose set of 14 featured pictures, the first FPs of the competition, was worth 490 points. Here are some more noteworthy scorers:

Featured articles, featured lists, featured topics and featured portals are yet to play a part in the competition. The judges have removed a number of submissions which were deemed ineligible. Typically, we aim to see work on a project, followed by a nomination, followed by promotion, this year. We apologise for any disappointment caused by our strict enforcement this year; we're aiming to keep the competition as fair as possible.

Wikipedians interested in friendly competition may be interested to take part in The Core Contest; unlike the WikiCup, The Core Contest is not about audited content, but, like the WikiCup, it is about article improvement; specifically, The Core Contest is about contribution to some of Wikipedia's most important article. Of course, any work done for The Core Contest, if it leads to a DYK, GA or FA, can earn WikiCup points.

mayors of Beckley WV

I found a very good source for Mayors of Beckley, West Virginia. I wanted to start a category for Mayors of Beckley. I have about 15 of them. There is a historic gap due to a huge fire in Beckley destroying many early records. What say you as to worthiness? Jim Wood was able to create a somewhat cooplete listing of the Mayors of Beckley. The fire of 1900 did quite a bit of damage to Primary records. I can use his data in a boo as a ref. IF I recall one of the Mayors was also a Governor of the State, I will of course need to check. Kelvinsong designed the barnstar after I requested it, my only spec was that it should have part of the state seal and of course the state motto. We both agreed that it turned out to be a fantastic design. I found Kelvinsong after I received the editor of the week award. He had as well. IF you need a graphic design, I would without hesitation look at the stuff he has made. Its rather impressive. So, the barnstar has 2 parents as it were. A coalfield thing

I managed to update the Pocahontas_Coalfield. I also added an image, Centennial medal from the field, I think its a better article now. What say you? I also let Acroterion know. This coal field is rather cool, it TECHNICALLY, had its origins in VA and became one of the largest in WVCoal town guy (talk) 16:20, 14 February 2014 (UTC)

Coal town guy, it looks like you've gotten off to an amazing start with Pocahontas Coalfield! It just needs some internal citations, and it should be good to go! I've got a few GARs that I'm working on, but I'll do some additional digging on sources in the meantime to add to the article! Need some help with the Pocahontas Coalfield

Hey- I have oldy but a goody as far as an image map question. I need an image of the pocahontas coalfield on a map. Here is the kick, I have defined its actual geographic location, Meaning, its in Tazewell County VA, and in Both McDowell and Mercer County WV.....My question is, should we A)MAKE the map with an image here, or B)Get an old map, showing the boundaries? IF I do that, what kind of copyright fight am I looking at? OR can you think of another way?Coal town guy (talk) 15:24, 24 February 2014 (UTC)

Hey Coal town guy! I apologize for my oversight in not seeing your post sooner! It quickly got buried on my message page, and I'm sorry I didn't see it until now. Let me do some digging on this one, as there are several preferable alternatives out there to how I've been making my maps :) I was in a rush when I was creating the article for the 2014 Elk River chemical spill and created that red county map, but there may be other editors on Wikipedia who make fancier maps using ArcGIS.
