Rushdie

Does the Booker prize specify that the author is known by the country they are born in rather than country of residence or their nationality? Rushdie is a British citizen (and a knight at that), and his own page page specifies his nationality as British. Cheers, Miremare 17:53, 9 September 2007 (UTC)

I believe his nationality is what should be listed, as that seems the purpose of the column, rather than the location of birth. His article specifies "United Kingdom" as his nationality (which it certainly is, as the fact he has a knighthood confirms), and I don't think we should have conflicting nationalities on these pages. I'm pretty sure non-Brits are only entitled to an honorary knighthood, such as that awarded to Rudolph Giuliani. Anyway, you say that to exclude India as his country of origin would be incorrect, but you don't think excluding his British nationality is incorrect? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that the column in question supposed to contain the nationality of the winner? Wikipedia is the only place that does filmographies from oldest to newest. It looks like garbage, but I could care less about it. Hi, just a friendly note. I've noticed of late that you have done a great deal of work on the Oprah's Book Club page. While I do appreciate all of your hardwork, I must ask that you refrain from reverting the changes that other users make. Simply put, this is not your page; it is shared by the entire community. Recent information about the latest book club selection is important and is credible; responding to the users who post that information by saying "Wikipedia is not a blog" is both rude and unnecessary. While you are correct that it is not a blog, it is also not an encyclopedia as you have stated you wish it to be. Please keep that in mind while reverting other people's edits. Thank you! While I hate to once again disagree with you...please read the guidelines yourself: "Individual scheduled or expected future events should only be included if the event is notable and almost certain to take place." Since Oprah.com - the most reliable source for Oprah's book club - has announced that a new selection will take place then it is absolutely true that the event is notable and will take place on Friday, October 5th. Therefore I am undoing your revert once again, though I predict you will probably challenge it. Please remember that Wikipedia is a collaborative project, meant to be used and edited by everyone who chooses to. While you may have the opinion that the information posted is unnecessary the fact is not everyone shares that opinion. Besides that, the announcement will take place Friday and this entire matter will be dropped.

Finally, after re-reading the first sentence, I have not changed my opinion. You should be aware that Wikipedia is NOT an encyclopedia by the standard definition of one which would not lend itself to being edited at anytime by anyone; it is instead a web-based, collaborative encyclopedic effort (hence the name, and the definition).

Template:Madeleine L'Engle

Hi. I don't mind your redoing the Madeleine L'Engle template to make it more uniform and, er, subtle. However, the way it is now, the graphic, which I spent hours designing way-back-when, floats off to the right, halfway down the template, where it looks terrible. Is there a way to retain your improvements but use the image in a low-key way where it will actually look decent? "superlative degree of comparison" - comparing amount of evil/good or the greatness? - "more evil" and "more good" vs "good" and "evil" -or instead -"great man" vs. "insignificant"?
Is there an ambiguity inherent to the passage? or does it refer to both?

The context of that sentence, from the beginning of the book to the paragraph after the sentence, goes:

novels by James Fenimore Cooper

Hello Maria..We talked a while ago about John Updike and Joyce Carol Oates...Anyway, I was wondering if you were aware of the horrendous fact that very few novels by classic author James Fenimore Cooper have a page of their own...One of them even gets redirected to his page! Whilst I fear I don't have enough time to read the books and create the pages atm, I was wondering if perhaps you did, in which case that would be great. Otherwise perhaps we could inform people from the WikiProject Novels about it? Hey María, I left a comment at Knut. I don't really see why fair use (even when it's clearly compliant with WP:NFCC) is so upsetting to some people. And of course, nobody would ever suggest that the encyclopedia never quote from an article from Vanity Fair which, legally speaking, is protected under the same fair use. For some reason there's a lot of non-lawyers who have incredibly dogmatic but somewhat inconsistent opinions about the whole "free content" thing. Oh well, one of those bizarre pieces of the WikiLandscape. If it comes down to it, I'd just say don't let the images discourage you. Javan Rhinoceros was recently promoted with no free images of the poor beasties alive. I could have put up a fair use image, and although it would improve the article a bit I don't think it's all that shabby not to have it... similar with the issue at hand -- either way, the article on Knut will still be beautifully illustrated.

How are you feeling about the process otherwise? A lot of first-comers (well, at least I did) find it really nerve-wracking and a bit discouraging at times. Some topics draw in a lot of commentators, but some really good articles don't get as much attention (lots of experts in science or literature; not as many in German polar bear media sensations ;) Good luck with it and let me know if I can be of help with this or whatever else. --JayHenry (talk) 07:24, 29 November 2007 (UTC)

Thank you that you changed my comments in the Knut article in "good" English as it is not my mother language. The "phenomena Knut" has raised some controversies in the German Wikipedia community because some think Knut is not worth to mention. I'm surprised how relaxed it is seen here. It is ok with the reverse of the Bild Zeitung text. Let me only say that the Bild Zeitung is by far the worst newspaper in Germany with a very bad background and I would use it only as toilet paper in the wood. Unfortunately, its influence as an opinion maker for the uneducated is undisputed. Have you already heard about the plans to make a movie about Knut? You are fast - thank you Maria! Maybe you find it also interesting that the zoo's managing director lost his job lately despite making so much money. He did a very very good job, but I think they dismissed him because he wanted too much money in his new contract. The city of Berlin declared bankrupt and the allowances to the zoo were not so much. But there was always the discrepancy between making money and the protection of the animals. Happy 2008! Yes, FACs that get bogged down like this can still pass. What's happening at Knut is hardly normal but unfortunately it does happen from time to time. Some reviewers have pet issues or just get hung up on a particular point and will go nuts if the point is not addressed. There's really only two things you can do: 1) be patient and 2) not be one of those people ;) My advice at Knut would be to just not respond to Kirlston anymore as he's clearly not being very reasonable, let him have the last word, and let Raul and Sandy interpret things -- they're generally quite fair. As a worst case scenario they might restart the nomination, just to get the conversation back on track. But I think failure at this point is highly unlikely.

If you do an author next you'll find there's a community of literature-focused reviewers who are all quite good and almost all quite reasonable. So what's your next FA, huh? One of your top ten favorites, perhaps? --JayHenry (talk) 00:41, 6 December 2007 (UTC)

Thanks. It's clear to me that Kirlston shouldn't be involved in that article. As you said, he twists Wikipedia policies to his own ends. I could have come back on "policy", but I didn't feel like fighting with someone who is so irrepressible despite knowing nothing about the subject matter. A valuable list which, through the power of the Wiki, will likely come to redefine our understanding of American Literature. Though not a literary scholar, I believe I am an expert on OMG WTH and to my mind, Hemingway and Twain, great writers indisputably, do not qualify for the WTH which represents a sort of shock and chaos. They are bold writers to be sure, but at no point in A Farewell to Arms did I say, "OMG WTH FredHenry!" I would add Hunter S. Thompson and Kurt Vonnegut instead. Possibly Thomas Pynchon moves onto my list instead of Capote. Pynchon elicits relatively less OMG, but a very great deal of WTH. It's a complicated area of scholarship and I'm glad someone with such keen insight as yourself is delving into it. --JayHenry (talk) 20:45, 16 December 2007 (UTC)

Hello my animal loving friend. Happy Holidays and (almost) New Year! I am in need of a competent copy editor. Could you cast your competent eye upon my poor little Sumatran Rhinoceros?
