Welcome back[edit]

Hi! Welcome back! I wouldn't worry so much about significant policies having changed, but more about some coding and technicalities having changed. But I don't really know, I wasn't too active at that time.

Policies can always be re-read (I recommend going here: Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-searchoptions and checking the tickybox for "Search in all namespaces" -- that way when you use the search box and insert keywords relevant to the policy you're looking for, it'll show pages from the Wikipedia namespace on the first try).

Good luck with the WikiProject! — Jeraphine Gryphon (talk) 02:30, 8 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

hi Jeraphine! Thanks for the very nice welcome back and the help with the policy search and review! =) Zhanli2012 (talk) 04:36, 8 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Please sign your name here: Wikipedia:WikiProject_Futures_studies#Participants and make sure you have the page on your watchlist, so you can see updates to the page and new discussions on its talk page from your watchlist! — Jeraphine Gryphon (talk) 10:12, 16 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Wonderful, thanks for the note, Jeraphine! Zhanli2012 (talk) 20:40, 16 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Request[edit]

I noticed you joined WikiProject Futures studies.

Welcome to the team.

We recently revamped the article Outline of futures studies.

It is a top-level page that attempts to map out the entire subject as well as its coverage on Wikipedia. It is intended to be a taxonomy of the subject, and to serve as a table of contents and navigation aid to browse articles (and article sections) about the subject.

It is also a useful tool for the WikiProject to analyze, plan, develop, and revise futures studies material. It is a hub from which to organize futures studies related topics.

It was built as a "reverse outline", a structural model of an existing work, which in addition to being a summary of the work, can reveal the gaps and other weaknesses for revision purposes.

Please look it over.

We need all the help we can get in identifying and filling in missing topics, whether they are included on Wikipedia or not. If a relevant missing topic has an article or article section about it, please add a link into the outline in the relevant section. Create new sections as needed.

While analyzing the outline, please answer the following questions (and fix the outline as needed):

  1. What's missing?
  1. Is the structure of the outline (sections and indents) representative of the subject?
  1. Does the outline help understand the relationships between the topics presented in the best way possible?

The overall purpose of the outline is to help readers understand the subject by showing what belongs to it, and within the subject what belongs to what.

Please help improve it.

It's our bird's eye view.

Thank you. The Transhumanist 19:39, 30 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Transhumanist! This is great. User:John_b_cassel and I will be helping teach a University of Houston foresight/futures class this Thursday which will introduce a group of students to this project - they will be tasked with helping out on the Wikiproject's task, and what your message describes is a perfect example of the power of Wikipedia's community and how they might engage it by working together with other Wikipedians like yourself (we're assuming the students don't have prior Wikipedia experience, although for we know all of them might be veterans!) . We will certainly highlight your message in the class! Zhanli2012 (talk) 19:58, 30 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion of "Practice page 1"[edit]

A page you created, Practice page 1, has been tagged for deletion, as it meets one or more of the criteria for speedy deletion; specifically, it is a test page. Use the sandbox for testing.

You are welcome to contribute content which complies with our content policies and any applicable inclusion guidelines. However, please do not simply re-create the page with the same content. You may also wish to read our introduction to editing and guide to writing your first article.

Thank you. Calabe1992 16:27, 3 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The message above is automated; I know you didn't mean to do what you did. Calabe1992 16:28, 3 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
no problem! thanks Calabe1992!! Zhanli2012 (talk) 16:31, 3 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
So does that mean we go back to the Sandbox? RealFuturist (talk) 22:40, 3 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You can have practice pages in your own userspace, for example žhanli can have one here User:Zhanli2012/Practice page and you can have one here: User:RealFuturist/draft -- the page is in your "userspace" if it begins with "User:" and your username, and then a slash / and then whatever title you want for the page, for example: User:Jeraphine Gryphon/Sandbox.
Other users will generally have to avoid deleting or editing things in your own space (unless of course they have permission and/or you're working on a page together; or if something definitely has to be removed, like copyright violations and other evil things). — Jeraphine Gryphon (talk) 08:40, 4 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
hi RealFuturist, this speedy deletion was due to an ordinary editing mistake on my part - I created the practice page in the wrong area by accident and requested the delete myself. The practice pages that I set up for the class in the class "user space" are OK, as far as i know though someone's changed it to match the names of the students now . thanks, Jeraphine for your help! Disagreeing with someone[edit]

OK, not sure of the best way to ask these questions--email, Project talk page, your talk page, my talk page? So still getting my feet on the ground. Nevertheless, here goes.

I've looked at the Outline_of_futures_studies and disagree with what User:The_Transhumanist revised on 05:14, 16 January 2012. Futures is not a branch of history, the definition of futures studies is wrong, and the reference to Wordnet does not exist. So my question is what is the polite way to approach this. Again, edit (delete) the parts that are wrong first or do I post some comments to him/her on the Talk page first?

And that user gets into a long discussion with another user on the Talk page for the WikiProject. I think I can bridge the differences between them, but dare I do so.

So thanks again. And let me know the best way to communicate these things wtih you (and perhaps, John) RealFuturist (talk) 22:38, 3 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

About editing articles: if you're sure that you're right and are more-or-less confident in your own judgement, then go right ahead and edit the article (WP:BEBOLD), but be sure not to leave the edit summary blank.
If you're not quite that sure, start a thread on the article's talk page and wait til someone answers. (If no one answers, then do what you want.) And if you want an explanation or clarification from this particular user then of course you can start a thread on the user's talk page.
If you guys want to talk about the WikiProject-related things then you can (should?) definitely use the WikiProject's talk page, that's what it's there for. — Jeraphine Gryphon (talk) 08:53, 4 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much for the advice. I'll make the edit (quickest way to get a reaction, I'm sure), and be sure to explain in the edit summary. Thanks for your guidance. RealFuturist (talk) 17:41, 4 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hi RealFuturist, yes, Jeraphine gives good advice here. Email me directly if there's anything you need help with urgently or if you need clarification of an issue but aren't getting an answer from other Wikipedians yet Zhanli2012 (talk) 17:47, 4 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
oh and I would to Realfuturist's disagreement question that reliable source citations are key to resolving content disputes like that. Of course sometimes, both sides have good refs! Zhanli2012 (talk) 17:49, 4 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguation link notification for April 9[edit]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Henry Jenkins, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page David Mack. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.
