Fill in currency on all the pages listed at User:The Transhumanist/Country list

In the "Economy of x" section, each country needs the following item filled in:

For example, in Topic outline of France, that item looks like this:

There are many other items to fill in (president, prime minister, population, size, economic rank, etc. etc., and it would take me over a year to fill them all in. I need your help. Filling in the currencies would be a big help.

Username capitalization in sockpuppet template

Due to some problems with ucfirst, Template:Sockpuppet can no longer automagically capitalize the username passed to it. Everywhere this template is passed a username starting with a lower case letter needs to be changed to an uppercase letter. I have made a list of these pages and posted it at Template talk:Sockpuppet. I am not sure how to automate this in AWB, but hopefully someone here with more experience can figure it out (if so, please do let me know how). Thanks! --Pascal666 23:15, 20 September 2009 (UTC)

Actually, the list I posted is those that were in a valid category before the template change and are now not. It is not a complete list of those passed usernames starting with a lowercase character. If the complete list of pages that transclude Template:Sockpuppet is loaded into AWB, I wonder if there is a way to have it go through them looking for first parameters starting with a lowercase letter and fixing them. Other than those in the above list, they would still all be in non-existing categories, but at least they could be found if the category gets more populated in the future. --Pascal666 23:39, 20 September 2009 (UTC)

Indic Scripts

In Indic scripts, vowels are written as marks attached to the consonants that precede them. Every syllable involves a consonant cluster followed by a single vowel. In most cases, a vowel cannot exist on its own and attempting to type a vowel in unicode produces a circular placeholder character (ा े ी ि). This dotted circle is not part of any Indic script and should not really appear anywhere on Wikipedia, except perhaps in articles related to Unicode etc. I most often see the placeholder with the the short i, ि. As in other cases the consonant is typed first followed by the vowel but the two combine into a single ligature with the i preceding (त ि -> ति). If you type them in their logical typographic order you get something similar but with the placeholder in the middle ित. If this can be fixed, I can provide a full list of the characters involved with their hexadecimal codes or whatever is needed. Basically: [vowel or word boundary]ि[consonant cluster] -> [vowel or word boundary][consonant]ि Examples:[2][3][4]. Thanks --Lo2u (TC) 12:54, 7 October 2009 (UTC)

WPBiography (tough)

Ok, I want to help DO this, but cannot figure out the setup. -- Mjquin_id (talk) 05:30, 27 January 2009 (UTC)
On talk pages that use Template:WPBiography that do NOT already have a "listas" parameter...we need to add one; the value could come from a "DEFAULTSORT" if one exists (possible on the article, not talk page) OR from trying to reverse the page name...meaning "Abraham Lincoln" needs to become "Lincoln, Abraham". Anybody? There are a couple of thousand pages....
Maybe two passes; one to add the param and one to add the missing value?

Couple of thousand. Various people have been working on this since it was 360,000 articles. I have done some thousands with AWB manually, mostly where the first name is definately Western, and the name is a simple format like First Last or First M. Last. The problem with reversing the name is this isn't appropriate for Arabic names, Chinese names etc. Also some names it is hard to determine what the "last name" is. Rich Farmbrough, 02:41, 1 August 2009 (UTC).
The key here is Category:Biography articles without listas parameter. Rich Farmbrough, 03:13, 1 August 2009 (UTC).
Curently about 46000 articles. Rich Farmbrough, 04:32, 1 August 2009 (UTC).
MadmanBot (talk · contribs) is working on these in a semi-automatic fashion right now (I'm confirming each edit, since I don't want to screw with biographies, even with biographies' talk pages.) It's checking the article to see if any sortkeys are explicit for one or more categories. If only one is, then it suggests a listas parameter for me to amend and approve. I don't think it's going to make much of a dent in 45,000 articles, though. :( — madman bum and angel 02:51, 3 August 2009 (UTC)
We got this under 30,000, however I have been finding a lot of uncategorised living people articles and these will probably get WP-bio added by YoBot in due course. It did some 14,000 in September but we kept up with that. Rich Farmbrough, 01:27, 10 October 2009 (UTC).

Template removal

I need someone to remove all usages of {{Vgy}} (e.g. {{Vgy|1993}}, which creates a piped link to 1993 in video gaming"). This template should not be used, since the MoS frowns on linking years at all, much les pipe-linking them. Just change it to a plain, unlinked date. Ten Pound Hammer, his otters and a clue-bat • (Many ottersOne batOne hammer) 20:48, 12 November 2009 (UTC)

Shouldn't you generate consensus to remove it first? –xenotalk 21:27, 12 November 2009 (UTC)
Consensus has already determined that similar links for years in television, music and other similar "Years in [subject]" links should be removed, and that years shouldn't be linked at all. • Just had a thought; if this has consensus why not just stop the linking at the template? Would save a bunch of edits. –xenotalk 22:14, 12 November 2009 (UTC)

  • Isn't that what you're trying to achieve? –xenotalk 23:41, 12 November 2009 (UTC)
  • Yes, but what would be the point in changing the template? If we did that, the template would be entirely useless and would still have to be removed from the articles. Ten Pound Hammer, his otters and a clue-bat • (Many ottersOne batOne hammer) 01:35, 13 November 2009 (UTC)
  • No, not necessarily. It could stay (as a harmless vestige) and be removed gradually. In any case, you should still generate consensus to do this. –xenotalk 01:42, 13 November 2009 (UTC)

Big Task... (8000 articles, requires editor discretion)

This is a somewhat long task, and takes a bit of discretion.

Set AWB to include all subcategories of [[Category:South Korean people]] Then, look for people with traditionally ordered Korean names (last name first) Make it skip articles that have "{{Korean name" Then the template Korean name must be used. (Under maintenance tags, above article)

It took me forever to accumulate this list of different formatting for all of the following names The following is the ones I've accumulated

I started this, and I just don't have the time to finish it. All help is appreciated ;) If you have any questions, post them on my talk page.

Examples:

  1. Bob Park (Don't do anything, the family name is last)
  2. Park Jung-Ho (prepend )

Database of possibilities (that I've encountered so far)

Props anyone (or group of people) who does this, it's a big, time consuming task. NativeForeigner Talk/Contribs 05:41, 18 January 2010 (UTC)

No reason to do it like that. If you determine that it's a Korean name then parse the pagename and take the first part. -- Magioladitis (talk) 18:29, 18 January 2010 (UTC)

This seems to be something to sort out using DefaultSort and ListAs. I have looked at a few and frankly find it hard to be sure - but I think the defaultsort was missing on one and the listas was wrong on two. So I fixed them. What is the betting they will soon be "corrected" back? Presumably the same problem applies with Chinese, Japanese and Vietnamese names. Kittybrewster 18:54, 19 January 2010 (UTC)

Incorporation of DYK talk functionality into ArticleHistory

Resolved

The functionality of the template {{DYK talk}} has now been incorporated into {{ArticleHistory}}. It would be great if an editor could look for article talk pages where both {{DYK talk}} (or {{dyktalk}}) and {{ArticleHistory}} appear, and do the following:

1. If the {{DYK talk}} template states as follows:

  • {{DYK talk|3 June|2008|... that in January 2006, [[United Kingdom|British]] [[Paralympic Games|Paralympic]] [[sprint (race)|sprinter]] '''[[John McFall]]''''s racing [[prosthesis]] was stolen, but anonymously returned a week later?|num=219}}; or
  • {{DYK talk|3 June|2008|entry=... that in January 2006, [[United Kingdom|British]] [[Paralympic Games|Paralympic]] [[sprint (race)|sprinter]] '''[[John McFall]]''''s racing [[prosthesis]] was stolen, but anonymously returned a week later?|num=219}},
then add the following parameters to {{ArticleHistory}}:

|dykdate = 3 June 2008
|dyklink = 219
|dykentry = ... that in January 2006, [[United Kingdom|British]] [[Paralympic Games|Paralympic]] [[sprint (race)|sprinter]] '''[[John McFall]]''''s racing [[prosthesis]] was stolen, but anonymously returned a week later?

2. Then delete the {{DYK talk}} template.

This would probably be a better task to be given to a bot, first because it doesn't really take any manual supervision, and because AWB doesn't have any mechanism (that I know of) to automate this task. It shouldn't be much problem for a bot programmer though, so try it out at WP:BOTREQ. —Akrabbimtalk 23:30, 21 February 2010 (UTC)

Is there consensus for a complete change in terminology, solved with a pure find-and-replace, or do we just need to pipe the links and worry about the wording on an article-to-article basis? —Akrabbimtalk 12:10, 6 April 2010 (UTC)
Well, the article name is established as you can see in the article talkpage itself. Why pipe the links? --JokerXtreme (talk) 12:59, 6 April 2010 (UTC)
Well, I just looked and there are almost 900 articles that link to War on Terrorism. Given that the term is not inaccurate (it is mentioned as an a.k.a. in the lead sentence), and the redirect does just what it is supposed to, I don't think it's worth the time (I would estimate 1.5 to 2 hours). —Akrabbimtalk 00:24, 9 April 2010 (UTC)
An automated find-and-replace wouldn't suffice? I don't think there are any instances of a linked War on Terrorism that can't be changed safely to War on Terror. But you can add a notification, something along the lines:"You can revert the changes, if you feel it is not appropriate.". Anyway, I will do it myself, if you don't, but I must get approval first. --JokerXtreme (talk) 06:51, 9 April 2010 (UTC)
I don't think that the edits would meet resistance at all, just an automated find-and-replace would still take a long time. When I am confident that I don't need to look over the diff, taking into account the time for the page to load and the edit to be processed, I usually run at about 8 edits per minute. With 950 edits, that is almost two hours. So if you're still willing to do it yourself, go ahead, but I don't think it is necessary. —Akrabbimtalk 13:56, 11 April 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, I guess I will. Well, it's not absolutely necessary, I just think it's more accurate. Just out of curiosity; once the task starts, does it need human supervision or it can go on by itself? --JokerXtreme (talk) 14:42, 11 April 2010 (UTC)
AWB is semi-automated, which means you have to sit there and click "Save" every time. Any script or whatever that would be more automated would need bot approval. —Akrabbimtalk 18:09, 11 April 2010 (UTC)
I see. Ok thanks. --JokerXtreme (talk) 18:35, 11 April 2010 (UTC)

Please would somebody go through this vast list correcting the consistent solecism concerning baronets and knights. Namely that baronets and knights should not be known by their initials but rather by their first name. Example: EWD Ward ->Sir Edward Ward, 1st Bt. I am not particularly suggesting that the hyperlink be changed (although it should be in this example becuase he has an article) – just that the list be corrected so EWD Ward becomes Sir Edward Ward, 1st Bt. Sir JS Pakington should become Sir John Pakington and not Lord Pakington (because the caricature is of him before he was ennobled). - Kittybrewster 07:59, 12 April 2010 (UTC)

Not done - not a task suitable for AWB. This is all one page, so it looks like someone is going to just have to work their way down the page, making changes as appropriate. AWB is better suited to tasks where the same change needs to be made on a bunch of different pages. --Darkwind (talk) 02:36, 18 April 2010 (UTC)

Route Diagram Template -- filename changes please

I don't know whether AWB is the right tool for this task or not (in which case, please point us in the right direction!) but it will take forever to do manually.

Route Diagram Template provides all the route maps seen in railway/canal/road articles. Recently some files were moved at Commons, and the icons no longer point to the right file. We're talking hundreds of files here (I looked at the 'what links here' for one and counted over 500 pages). However, it looks to me like a straightforward search-and-replace text swap (inside a template).

  1. Check for articles that have the template on the article page.
  2. Check if those articles already have the same template on the article talk page, and if so, just delete the template that is on the article page.
  3. If there is no {{Educational assignment}} template on the article talk page, copy it from the article page to the talk page, and then delete the template that is on the article page.

In several disambiguation pages, you have stuff like

These should be fixed to

In the first case, anything like Foo (bar) can be replaced to Foo (bar) [anytime there are parentheses, whether it's Foo (novel), Foo (album), Foo (journal), etc... only the first part should be italicized). In the second case however, you need to check for the word "song" at the end. Otherwise you will break things like "Eh, Eh (Nothing Else I Can Say)" to "Eh, Eh" (Nothing Else I Can Say). Headbomb {talk / contribs / physics / books} 03:03, 8 September 2010 (UTC)

Regex

For the first part...

  • ''\[\[(.*)\s\((.*)\)\]\]'' → [[$1 ($2)|''$1'' ($2)]]

For the second part

  • "\[\[(.*)\s\((.*\ssong)\)\]\]" → [[$1 ($2)|"$1" ($2)]]

Seems to work for me. It would be a good idea to test it on a larger scale to see if there are problems with it however. Headbomb {talk / contribs / physics / books} 03:03, 8 September 2010 (UTC)

Sine

Please find all the links to [[Trigonometric_functions#Sine.2C_cosine.2C_and_tangent|Sine]] and replace them with [[Sine]]. It's likely some link text will be "sin" too, in which case it should be replaced with [[Sine|sin]]. The capitalization should be preserved too (of course). —Pengo 11:34, 20 September 2010 (UTC)

I couldn't find any examples. As a check I modified my search to look for similar links for cosines and found just one example, at Bicycle and motorcycle dynamics. I suspect that articles have been linking to the old Sine redirect. -- John of Reading (talk) 12:33, 20 September 2010 (UTC)
Thank you all the same. Thought there would be others. Ah well. —Pengo 19:01, 20 September 2010 (UTC)

The idea is to replace things like [[Nature]] with [[Nature (journal)|Nature]] in the citation templates. This should be coupled with a database run. The base regex could be something like \|(\s*)?(journal|work)(\s*)?=(\s*)?\[\[(FOOBAR)\]\] → |$1$2$3=$4[[$5 (journal)|$5]]. Headbomb {talk / contribs / physics / books} 11:46, 20 September 2010 (UTC)

As an experiment I've done "journal=[[Nature]]" using "What links here" - Edits:63 Skipped:1374. I'll let someone else find an efficient way to tackle the other 1,908 journals and magazines mentioned in the bot request. But perhaps only a few are actually used in citation templates? -- John of Reading (talk) 20:00, 20 September 2010 (UTC)

Can you add the template to all of the pages listed on it? The "Current programing" has already been added. ChaosMasterChat 03:37, 11 September 2010 (UTC)

Watchlist update needed

Hello. I would like to update Wikipedia:WikiProject Hawaii/Hawaii recent changes using AWB, as well as replace all instances of {{WPHawaii}} with {{WikiProject Hawaii}}. Could anyone help? Viriditas (talk) 04:41, 16 October 2010 (UTC)

 Working I will see what I can do. -- DQ (t) (e) 15:02, 16 October 2010 (UTC)
Stopped after 50 edits, this is over 500 edits. This will need to be done by a bot. Filing BFRA right now. -- DQ (t) (e) 16:03, 16 October 2010 (UTC)
Actually I need to know why you want to do this per WP:R2D, and need you to post that reason on The bot request page. Will notify your talkpage. -- DQ (t) (e) 16:18, 16 October 2010 (UTC)
Not done Just found out I can't use AWB for this (although damage of 50 edits is done). If there was something more to do with this, then I might be able to do it, but for now, this can't be done without reason. -- DQ (t) (e) 16:27, 16 October 2010 (UTC)
See Wikipedia:Banner standardisation. I am the editor responsible for the redirect[8] which was standardized by Rich Farmbrough on July 23, 2010.[9] In other words, I created the template which was moved and redirected to the standard name, and now I request completion of the standardization effort. If the watchlist update can be completed without updating the redirect, that is fine. Viriditas (talk) 19:12, 16 October 2010 (UTC)
The two are (almost) independent. The page simply needs updating, which hasn't happened since 2009. I am putting in a BRFA now, then going out. I will be back in about 3 hours and will update the list then - this will be a manual test of the bot code, so I would be grateful if no-one jumps the gun in the next little while. Rich Farmbrough, 11:41, 21 October 2010 (UTC).
'Tis done (though I have a fun UTF8 bug to chase). Rich Farmbrough, 18:58, 21 October 2010 (UTC).

Illinois Mycological Association's content has moved

If you take a look at this site, you'll note it was moved (a few years ago, actually). The site owner emailed OTRS asking of someone could fix all the dead links on Wikipedia and make them point to the new site which is here. You can see a list of all links currently on Wikipedia that use the old version here. Any links that start with http://www.ilmyco.gen.chicago.il.us/ should now start with http://www.mushroomthejournal.com/greatlakesdata/ . Hope that makes sense. WikiProject Korea assessments

I need some help going through Category:NA-Class Korea-related articles and making sure that all categories are marked as |class=Category and all templates are maked as |class=Template in the {{WikiProject Korea}} banner template. Many are still marked as |class=NA, which is no longer correct. Thanks in advance for any assist! :) PC78 (talk) 00:26, 30 October 2010 (UTC)

Cite BAILII

Hello! {{Cite BAILII}} has been updated so that the parameter |country= is now redundant. Can you please remove this parameter from all pages transcluding the template? Thanks. — SMUconlaw (talk) 16:23, 4 November 2010 (UTC)

I removed this for all the articles that I found containing it, but I wasn't able to find it used very often. I corrected a total of three or four pages. Jncraton (talk) 23:08, 9 November 2010 (UTC)
OK, thanks! — SMUconlaw (talk) 15:44, 11 November 2010 (UTC)

Replacement of uses of "Findlaw us" with "Ussc"

The template {{Findlaw us}} has been deprecated since October 2009 as it has been replaced by {{Ussc}}, but cannot be deleted yet as it is still use in some articles. Can someone please replace all uses of {{Findlaw us}} with {{Ussc}}?

The format of {{Findlaw us}} is:

{{Findlaw us|[volume]|[page]|[title]|link=[article name]|year=[year]}}

The format of {{Ussc}} is:

{{Ussc|[volume]|[page]|[year]|[reporter]|[reporter volume]}}

{{Ussc}} neither displays case names (the third parameter in {{Findlaw us}} marked "[title]" in the example above) nor has the parameter |link=. Please deal with those parameters like this:

{{Findlaw us|320|81|Hirabayashi v. U.S.|link=Hirabayashi v. United States|year=1943}}
''[[Hirabayashi v. United States|Hirabayashi v. US]]'' {{ussc|320|81|1943}}

Thanks! Once this is done, {{Findlaw us}} can be nominated for deletion. — SMUconlaw (talk) 16:43, 21 November 2010 (UTC)

I've edited 17 articles. The remaining 15 articles all have calls that look like {{Findlaw us|vvv|ppp}}, with no year; the documentation for {{Ussc}} says the year is compulsory. See especially Laurence Tribe where the year is displayed separately in its own sortable column. -- John of Reading (talk) 21:50, 23 November 2010 (UTC)
OK, thanks very much. I guess the remaining articles will have to be fixed by hand. — SMUconlaw (talk) 09:00, 24 November 2010 (UTC)

Need a Savvy AWB person to fix "Saavy"

There are 180 occurrences of "saavy". Most are likely misspellings of the word "savvy". I could make it a several-day project and try to inspect and change them all manually, but this sounds like a great task for AWB. Can someone please help? Thanks. --Grandpa jlc (talk) 02:44, 23 November 2010 (UTC)

I will look through them with AWB. Sounds like fun. --Andrew Kelly (talk) 03:27, 23 November 2010 (UTC)
Done - Most of the misspellings were in Wikipedia space, so I skipped them (except for one that I accidentally let slip through) because the edits would most likley alter a comment left by another user, which is not good etiquette. But I checked through the article space and also the Template:, File:, Portal:, and Book: namespaces. Hope this is what you were looking for. Cheers! --Andrew Kelly (talk) 03:39, 23 November 2010 (UTC)
