Wikipedia:GLAM/Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa/Wikipedian in Residence
Welcome | Resident Wikimedians | Staff Contribution Policy and Editing Help | Workplan | What we've done |
Te Papa regularly brings in Wikimedians from the community to work on projects to make our collections, data, and research useful to various parts of the Wiki ecosystem.
Research Expeditions[edit]
User:Ambrosia10 is trialling the research expeditions schema for Wikidata, creating or enriching items about expeditions conducted by Te Papa and its predecessors. This work is supported by Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand.

Natural History team[edit]
User:Giantflightlessbirds worked during autumn 2023 to share information about our natural history staff and their research throughout the life of Te Papa and its predecessors.
Progess on several staff and their work was made, but there's always more to do!
Activities[edit]
The project started by building a list of all natural history curators and researchers, back to the founding of the Colonial Museum. Giantflightlessbirds began adding and populating Wikidata items and Commons categories for current staff, and found places to contribute to articles.
Task | About |
---|---|
Add researchers to Wikidata | Including biographical information and identifiers such as ORCID |
Find and add all available research publications | Link each to its author(s)
Create Scholia publications list and graphs |
Create Commons categories for each researcher | Populate with openly-licensed images from Te Papa archives and other sources, including field and lab photos
Add a profile photo to Wikidata items Relevant images added to a Research at Te Papa category |
Add researcher images to suitable articles and Wikidata items | Create monthly report to measure impact of additions |
Create articles about current researchers that meet notability threshold | Use material already published/online as well as in Te Papa’s archives that can be cited (and published to Wikisource if possible) |
Expand articles relevant to research at Te Papa with summaries and citations | Aim to summarise and cite the work of each researcher in at least one article |
Look into creating other relevant articles | For example, research sites or newly-described species |
Natural History researchers[edit]
Wikidata generally uses the full name as given in author lists on publications; Wikipedia would use the most-commonly-referred-by name—in this case the one in Te Papa's staff listing. The Scholia link shows the number of publications currently in Wikidata.
