What Te Papa works on[edit]
We hold collections and knowledge relevant to many areas of Wikipedia, and the wider Wiki ecosystem, but only so many hours in the day. For the moment, our workplan will focus on smaller projects that build up staff interest and our ability to contribute more in the future. In particular, we try to contribute to Wiki projects in ways that connect with our programme of exhibitions, events and sector support.
2023 plan[edit]
- Packaged upload of another set of images to Wikimedia Commons, accompanied by relevant edits to Wikidata and Wikipedia
- Present Te Papa's project framework at Wikimania 2023
- Ongoing staff engagement and training, such as through loading collection images and adding to articles
- Linking our agent data to Wikidata items
- Hosting User:Giantflightlessbirds as Autumn 2023 Wikipedian in Residence
- Hold #1Lib1Ref session(s) with staff
- Improvements to Commons template for Te Papa collection items (possible inclusion: institutional attribution similar to Met Museum template)
- Further improvements to documentation
- Attend community wiki events when possible
Packaged upload[edit]
Our plan is to re-run our pilot forget me not project, letting us refine and embed those processes and tools, as well as improve all documentation to make it easier to make new contributions as part of the museum's overall programme of work.
Project steps:
- Revisit pilot project and identify areas for improvement
- Select collection area/topic of focus
- Identify pages to create or improve
- Identify mātauranga sources that can be referenced
- Select collection images to load, and identify Wikidata items that need to be created or improved
- Rework the TePapaColl template to ensure it's robust and adaptable across collection types
- Review and revise data export mapping and OpenRefine upload schemas
- Export agent and taxon data from Te Papa's API, and use OpenRefine to update Wikidata items
- Export collection data and images from the API, and use OpenRefine to upload images and add metadata
- Create and edit articles, adding images from our uploads
- Fully document the project workflow and tools
Tasks[edit]
Here's a list of tasks staff can work on if they're looking for something to try their hand at.
Make use of Read, Watch, Play[edit]
Pick a hub or article in Read, Watch, Play on our site, and find some similar articles on Wikipedia. You can use the information on our site to flesh out the Wikipedia article, or just add some references.
For example, our page on repatriation and return of karapuna to Rēkohu might be a good source for some additions to the Moriori article.
More good sources on Read, Watch, Play:
Loading images for articles[edit]
For each article, download the noted image, load it to Wikimedia Commons using the TePapaColl template, and add it to the article's infobox and the Wikidata item for the species.
Some of the information is more easily gotten from Te Papa's API browser.
Remove it from this list when you're done, and send the article and image links to Lucy.
