Warnings[edit]

Hello. I'm trying to figure out how to give out appropriate warnings. I've never done it before, but recently there have been a number of articles with an increased amount of vandalism. These are IP address users, and I'm not 100% sure how to send them a proper warning. What if they have been warned once before? How do I approach those kind of situations? --Radiokid1010 (talk) 00:43, 27 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I would look at how recent the warnings are (for instance, 3 from 2007-2009, which suggests a dynamic IP or a different person, as opposed to 3 in the past week, which may likely have all come from one person) as well as the severity of the vandalism (i.e. "susie is cute" vs serious policy violation or something). Start with the lowest and move up if you're unsure, though it's acceptable to skip levels if it's warranted. And if more than one IP is persistently vandalizing the same page, it may be something to take to WP:RFPP. - Purplewowies (talk) 01:13, 27 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I usually start with a friendly Level 2. If it's ignored (or they have a recent warning), a Level 4 final warning. Of course, warning/banning a dynamic IP can often be very pointless, since resetting their modem/router makes them "someone else". Here's the list of warnings, if you haven't found it yet. Abuse of Power by Editor[edit]

I am also concerned that JohnInDC is a sockpuppet of User:Mendaliv. As soon as User:Mendaliv stopped with aggressive edits of my articles, JohnInDC came in with the same aggressive edits and tone. The nature of the comments were very close in point of view. I believe that the use of sockpuppets by an Administrator or Editor is a serious abuse of power. Note further that JohnInDC has no User Page set up and masks behind his user comments. In fact, JohnInDC had deleted some relevant comments on his talk page. User:What88 01:37, 27 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Interested editors may find a bit of useful background at Wikipedia:Editor_assistance/Requests#Lou_Posner_article, and to the SPI page mentioned there re What88, here. JohnInDC (talk) 01:53, 27 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Changes to a medical article[edit]

I made some changes to a page yesterday that is a website about a controversial organization Wikipedia:ILADS, and I wanted the page to reflect both the dominant medical point of view, but also the POV of the organization and the controversy. I had noticed that in the past modifications to this page had been reversed immediately due to the quality of the medical research cited, so I only added research that had been authored by board members from the main medical body involved, and no research from ILADS itself. My updates were rejected based on RS and MEDRS. I am new, and this was my first attempt to get accurate information out, and I am sure I made mistakes, but it is hard to have a neutral point of view if you can't even include research from the dominant researchers and most well respected doctors in the field. I am happy to slink away if Wikipedia policy is not to discuss public health policy controversy's neutrally. I know the literature well enough to make concise arguments on both sides. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bob the goodwin (talkcontribs) 05:59, 28 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Just for clarification, the article was International Lyme And Associated Diseases Society and this is the first edit by User:Bob the goodwin. The previous edits were by an IP.— Vchimpanzee · talk · contributions · 22:02, 10 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

article has been misnamed, I can't undo[edit]

Misnamed page is at: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_Fu

The correct title should be: Alexander Fu Sheng. The reasons are given by me (with references) on the talk page, namely that he never was named "Alexander Fu". Yet I cannot undo the edit (26 October 2009‎) that changed the article from its correct name to its present incorrect name. Why won't the site software let me revert that? Thanks.

Kenmcl2 (talk) 02:18, 27 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

To rename a page you have to Move it to the new name using the little drop down menu in the top right next to View History :) Samwalton9 (talk) 02:23, 27 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
What Samwalton said, as well as the fact that that entry in the edit history cannot be undone because there's technically no change to the article text; it's just a notation that the article was moved, more or less. See Help:Moving. - Purplewowies (talk) 02:26, 27 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you both, I'll also look into the Post-move Cleanup. Kenmcl2 (talk) 02:29, 27 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
the article was moved to its current name from the name suggested by the original poster in 2009 so if it is determined that Alexander Fu Sheng is the proper name, an admin will need to be involved. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 02:33, 27 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Not correct name for BELARUS[edit]

— Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.57.156.161 (talk) 06:06, 27 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Can you provide specific links to use of obsolescent nomenclature that you would wish to be changed? And could you use English, please? This is the English-language Wikipedia. Stigmatella aurantiaca (talk) 07:36, 27 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
This is the English Wikipedia. The official name of a country in the language of another country, neither of them being English speaking, is of no relevance here. In any case, Wikipedia articles use the most widely used form of the name in English sources, rather than any official pronouncements. --ColinFine (talk) 13:04, 27 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Link to edit a section by name[edit]

Hi! I wonder if there is a way to create a link to edit a section using the section name instead of the section number. For example this link would be nice, but it does not work:

Is there a way? Do you have any idea? -- Basilicofresco (msg) 10:00, 27 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Like this Dog#Biology ? Maproom (talk) 10:15, 27 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I see – you want an Edit link. No, I don't know a way to do that. But I wonder why you want it. Maproom (talk) 12:47, 27 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Pure speculation on my part, but since Basilicofresco is the author of Frescobot, I imagine he might be considering ways of enhancing FrescoBot functionality. I offhand can't think of any way of bringing up a section in edit mode by name either. This would be something best addressed to one of the MediaWiki software developers. Maybe a query directed to Wikipedia:Bug reports and feature requests could provide an answer. Alternatively, maybe somebody at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical) would know. IP user trolling on talk pages[edit]

Hi, 81.147.161.24 (talk · contribs · WHOIS) has made several trolling comments on talk pages but has not actually vandalised any articles. What is the correct procedure to warn, and if necessary block this user? MaxBrowne (talk) 11:29, 27 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Could you elaborate on the question? I'm not sure if you want to advertise a new product, write an article on an existing one, etc. Samwalton9 (talk) 13:50, 27 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Unless it is already attracting significant attention in the press, it is a new thing not yet ready for an article here. We do not allow ourselves to be used for promotion of things not already notable. --Orange Mike | Talk 15:52, 27 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Large, politically partisan anti-Obama ad in the middle of an article's body text[edit]

Is the community really serious about this? Did any of you actually look at this ad? You not actually plastered a gigantic ad in the middle of an article's text, but a clearly partisan ad on a site that professes neutrality as one of its core principles? C'mon, this has got to be a hacker's hoax, right? I really wouldn't care that much about small banner ads at the top or on the side of the site, but this? This has got to be someone's practical joke. Nightscream (talk) 16:15, 27 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, this was vandalism. Template:Infobox Chinese/Footer has been repaired. Next time, click the "Related changes" link on the left toolbar, and you should see which template has been vandalised. -- John of Reading (talk) 16:20, 27 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Political ad vandilism on china related subjects.[edit]

Scroll down in article President of the People's Republic of China for example. I'm not sure what template is causing this, but I can't seem to isolate it. Looking for someone more knowledgeable to find source and remove. It shows up on a lot of China related pages, haven't found others. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 184.10.159.18 (talk) 16:18, 27 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

We have changed our colours since the last Wiki article and wonder how one goes about altering the illustrations for our Home and Away kits? Any help will be much appreciated. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.174.49.7 (talk) 17:12, 27 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

See Template:Infobox football club for a basic description of how to alter the patterns shown in the infobox. You need to know the "RGB" color values for the different components of your home and away uniforms. Try looking at the infobox entries of other teams if the description on the Template page is inadequate. Do your experimentation in your Sandbox until you get the colors and patterns right. Removing "orphan article" and "bare URL" notifications[edit]

Article in question: Darin Pastor

Recently went through to remove "orphan article" and "bare URL" notifications by adding a mention of Darin to Phoenix Coyotes and creating full citations for all references. Both notifications still remain. How do we remove?

Thanks

KCDPR (talk) 17:27, 27 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

They are added manually, and need to be removed manually. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 17:45, 27 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

General LeRoy Eltinge was used to transport emigrants[edit]

I just made an edit. I wanted to include a JPEG of a manifest but did not know how. Can you help me add this as a link or something? — Preceding unsigned comment added by MikeHrycak (talkcontribs) 19:02, 27 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If you wish to add a JPEG image to an article you can upload it (Wikipedia:Uploading images) and then add it into the article (Wikipedia:Picture tutorial). Hope this helps. FalkirksTalk 20:38, 27 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Be sure that you have permission to upload the file. In general, the copyright holder will already have released the image under an appropriate free license. See Wikipedia:Image use policy. If that is not the case, we must email the copyright holder to get a written statement authorizing the use of the image. See Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. Under certain, very specific situations, we may use a non-free image under "fair use" guidelines. See Wikipedia:Non-free content.
Uploading images to Commons follows somewhat different rules than uploading to the local Wikipedia. For example, there is no such thing as "fair use" of a non-free image in Commons.
It is very important that we follow guidelines in our uploading of images. The WMF does not have the budget to defend itself against a major lawsuit, and if we are careless in allowing upload of images of uncertain copyright status, it is easy to imagine some group of lawyers initiating an expensive class action lawsuit. Did you maybe include a link to a website on our blacklist? It won't save the page if there's a blacklisted link, but it will generally tell you the specific link that's tripping it. —Jeremy v^_^v Bori! 22:51, 27 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
