.MOV or .MP4 to .OGV file conversion[edit]

The free Miro Video Converter software that I am using does not do so well with creating .ogv files from 640x480 .mov video files (or .mp4 crops of those files). See File:20120126 Simeon-Whitney Young pregame shootaround layup lines.ogv. Although my original is not so great, I was hoping not to lose so much quality in the conversion. Also, is there a way to remove the sound of the people sitting nearby.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 00:13, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It appears you are asking a question about how to use software on your computer. The helpdesk is for asking questions regarding how to use wikipedia. For help with creating/editing the video, please see the reference desk for assistance. Thanks. Tiggerjay (talk) 00:19, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I think the computing reference desk is probably a better fit from a getting-your-question-in-front-of-people-who-will-likely-know-the-answer perspective, but this particular question fairly squares with the help desk in my view because it's about a file to be used here and about conversion to the file container format we require video files to be uploaded in.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 01:17, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

City & Guilds of London Institute[edit]

In the process of adding a reference I accidentally deleted the original references. Please tell me that you can restore them. Sorry for the trouble.— Preceding unsigned comment added by 2602:306:c48e:9d39:d812:701d:91db:15d8 (talkcontribs)

No problem, I have fixed it by readding {{Reflist}} under the reference section; I also removed your redundent use of <ref> and fixed the formatting of your reference. Tiggerjay (talk) 01:07, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Eldridge[edit]

I would not call Eldridge a suburb. It is a small town. There is a difference. It is really pretty much self-contained. They have 2 banks, doctors, dentists, gas stations, grocery stores, restaurants, a high school, an intermediate school, an elementary school, post office, library, hardware store. Churches. Really everything a town needs to survive. It does not have clothing store. It does not have a Walmart...you can get to a Walmart, or other store quicker coming from Eldridge, than one who lives in the city of Davenport, considering driving half way across town with traffic. It has a Mayor, city council, garbage trucks, snow plows....you name it, it is pretty much self-contained. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.167.243.95 (talk) 01:00, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Not the correct page for this discussion but your idea of what a suburb is seems different than standard. Rmhermen (talk) 03:12, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Helpdesk: please remove copyright warning on this page. At the request of copyright holder, the initial source (eroica.com) has now removed the material from its site altogether so as to avoid any possible future confusion about copyright ownership. Can I See My Reviewing History?[edit]

Is there any way I can see a history of the edits I've reviewed? I haven't done many yet, but I was just wondering. Alphius (talk) 01:54, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not 100% sure I know what you're asking. There is no way I know of to find the pages you've "reviewed" in the past, except if what you've viewed is saved in your browser's history tab. However, at the top right of every page there is a link labeled "Contributions" which links to your contribution history where you can look at every single edit you've ever made that has not been to a deleted page (or occasionally hidden from view).--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 02:20, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I know about the contributions tab. I was just wondering about the pages I've reviewed, since I don't know of any way to find them either. Alphius (talk) 02:30, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Alphius, your review log can be found here. For instructions to get to that page: From User Contributions click logs which is below the title. From there change All public logs to Review log and click Go. There you'll be able to see all your reviews. Hope that's what you were looking for, if not please let me or others know and we'll try to help. Have a nice day! XapApp (talk) 01:23, 3 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Incorrect author bio on a listing with the National Library of Australia[edit]

We have been in contact with the National Library of Australia and they have informed us that the incorrect author bio was supplied by you - can you please contact us so that we can make an amendment. regards [details removed] — Preceding unsigned comment added by Zeus Publications (talkcontribs) 03:53, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It seems unlikely that Wikipedia provided any information to the National Library. I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over 6 million articles and thought we were affiliated in some way with that subject. Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is for asking questions related to using or contributing to Wikipedia itself. Thus, we have no special knowledge about the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the upper right side of your screen. If you cannot find what you are looking for, we have a reference desk, divided into various subject areas, where asking knowledge questions is welcome. Best of luck.. RudolfRed (talk) 04:19, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Not actually true. The National Library of Australia's website sources its biographies from Wikipedia rather than trying to write their own, and many GLAM institutions are going down similar paths. Now, if the problem is that they're linking to the wrong person, that probably requires some co-ordination and working out how they pick which article to use; if, however, it's the right article but with incorrect information, you can either learn how to edit the article to update the information (of course giving appropriate sources to confirm the correction) or provide the sources on the article's talk page and try to get someone's attention (possibly someone who's already contributed to the article) to fix it.
That said, it would be easier to work out how to fix the problem if we know who the author is we're talking about. Confusing Manifestation(Say hi!) 05:22, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
There is a world of difference between "supplied by [[WP]" and "they get it from WP". The former implies that someone at WP selected the article and actively gave it to someone at the library, the latter (and far more likely explanation) is that someone at the library simply selected the wrong article from among the 4 million we have here - without consulting anyone of us (or the Foundation). Article[edit]

I would like to place an smalll article about my website, why you keep the same info about lavalife, facebook , and others..tell me please what i have to include, do not to be deleted in the future..thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Edita777 (talkcontribs) 04:13, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

See WP:N and WP:COI. Your website needs to be notable, and since you have a conflct of interest, you should avoid making the article yourself. If the subject meets the notability guidelines, you can request an article at WP:RA. Wikipedia is not a business directory or advertsing medium. RudolfRed (talk) 04:15, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It should also be pointed out that the articles on Facebook and Lavalife make claims as to why they are notable (the article on Lavalife for example claims revenue of $100+ million). Your article does nothing to demonstrate the notability required to be an article on Wikipedia. Trinitresque (talk) 04:31, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

User possibly editing article about himself[edit]

The user User:GJTForbes has made 5 edits to an article about a living person that matches his username's initials and last name: Graham John Thomson Forbes. I would get involved, but after having read through policies, I'm still not sure what exactly the user violated, and what warnings should be given, but I do have the sense that policy was indeed violated in some way. If anyone else has a better understanding of it, please take whatever steps are needed. Trinitresque (talk) 04:26, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

"While [Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales] said that Wikipedia generally frowns on people editing entries about themselves, there is no hard and fast rule against it."[1] ~:74.60.29.141 (talk) 05:43, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
"While longtime editors like Jimmy Wales know the ins-and-outs of Wikipedia to be able to edit his own article and do so in ways that are compliant with Wikipedia's policy, there's like absolutely no way that a brand new user who isn't familiar with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines would ever come close to producing a viable article; new users should never write autobiographies because when they try to, they inevitably end up hating Wikipedia."[2] --Jayron32 06:07, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

in text references in blue print[edit]

When mentioning something in the text that has a Wiki page of its own, how do I make the print blue so the reader can click on it and go to that Wiki page? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Polecreek (talkcontribs) 05:46, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Encase it in two square brackets. Thus [[George Washington]] produces George Washington. See Help:Link for more info. --Jayron32 06:04, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

After downloading, I have unzipped the zip file and see a Jar file named "STiki_2013_01_26". I am double-clicking on this file, but nothing is happening, no program is opening. --PlanetEditor (talk) 07:23, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

A JAR (file format) is actually a ZIP file that contains an executable which runs in Java. "When a user double clicks on a jar file, the Java runtime environment will open the jar file and run the software that is contained in it rather than list the files that it contains."[1] For more information, see: www.computerhope.com/issues/ch001343.htm - (or there are many other sites). They can be opened with most (if not all) ZIP utility programs. However, another editor familiar with STiki might want to provide more specific information.   ~:74.60.29.141 (talk) 08:41, 30 January 2013 (UTC))[reply]
P.s.: you might have better luck here: Wikipedia talk:STiki
If you are running a Linux based operating system, then you need to open a command prompt and type "java -jar File", so, for example, java -jar /usr/downloads/STiki_2013_01_26 . If you are on windows, make sure you have Java installed. Mdann52 (talk) 13:22, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Getting sfn template short citation links to references working[edit]

I've not used the sfn template. I am in the process of doing a GA review on Ian Gillan and none of the links from the short citations to the full references are working. I am trying to learn and fix this at the same time. I've read several help pages but can't even find a statement of what is needed ( and needed in the given examples) to make those links work. Could anybody tell me what is missing / wrong that is keeping those links from working at Ian Gillan? Thanks! Sincerely, North8000 (talk) 13:27, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I also haven't wrapped my head around this completely yet. There is an example also using sfn's at Wolstenholme prime. In that article you can see that the first instance of the footnote uses {{Harvnb}}, while every subsequent instance of the footnote uses {{Sfn}}, both wrapped inside <ref> tags. I haven't figured out yet, why it doesn't work in this article, though. -- Toshio Yamaguchi 15:12, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I think I've found the source of the error, though I'm not sure of a solution. In order to link the sfn template apparently (I am not very familiar either) looks for a date and last name. It occurred to me that since the cite book template to Gillan has a second author, using last2=, sfn might be breaking because it's not matching both last names. Maybe the exact detail of what it looks for is not quite correct but, sure enough, if you remove the second author from the cite book template it fixes the error. However, neither removing the second author from the citation breaking full attribution, nor adding the second author in the sfn template thus substantially enlarging each shortened footnote, feels like quite the correct solution.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 15:29, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It's consistent. Checking my supposition from the other direction, if, instead of removing last2=, you add the second name to the sfn template, i.e., {{sfn|Gillan|Cohen|1993}}, that also fixes the error. Maybe a global search and replace of "{{sfn|Gillan" with "{{sfn|Gillan|Cohen" is the proper route.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 15:40, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
While thinking about creating a help page for this, I just found that we in fact already DO have Help:Shortened footnotes. On old saying goes Afterwards you are always smarter, well.... -- Toshio Yamaguchi 15:52, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! BTW, I had already found that help page and it didn't help me. A common occurrence...what these help page writers need is a dummy-on-the-topic person (like me) as an advisor.  :-) North8000 (talk) 16:40, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. That fixed it. North8000 (talk) 12:34, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Could I get an administrator to assist with this page, please? The current version is pretty much an exact copy of an article from the Grove dictionary. When I replaced it with a different version, it was reverted back to the copyright violation. There has been no immediate response to explanations about this on the discussion page. Thanks. Pkeets (talk) 14:02, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Help with transferring a file from Commons to Wikipedia[edit]

Creating a table when there's already a lot of text[edit]

I started an article that I think can potentially be very useful List of State-owned enterprises in the People's Republic of China but I don't know how to organize it into a proper table. How do I create a table with one row for each company? How do I create 5 columns (name of company, industries, employees, revenue, profit)?

Information in info-box[edit]

I have tried every source to find the answer to changing the info-box at right on The Sky Is Crying (album)

I thought I did it once, but compilation is still there. Compilation does not apply to this release (in the standard use of tag) as all tracks were previously unreleased. Apparently, the confusion began as Jimmie Vaughan received credit for [compiling] the tracks, but it is definitely a studio album of previously unreleased tracks. If someone could make the edit, that would be great. Thank you! Mossinterest (talk) 19:50, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I think you just need to change the Type parameter in the template from "Type = Compilation album" to "Type = foo" where foo is the correct type (studio, demo, etc). You can see the different choices here: Template:Infobox_Album#Type RudolfRed (talk) 20:00, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Incorrect details on author listed with National Library of Australia[edit]

An author, Ken Mackenzie, who wrote Good as Gold, has incorrect author details listed with the National Library of Australia. I have spoken to a staff member at the library to advise them and they informed me that the author info was supplied by Wiki.

After some searching I think I have guessed what you refer to. http://catalogue.nla.gov.au/Record/5976914 at the National Library of Australia is about the book "Good as Gold" by an author named Ken Mackenzie. If you click his name then content copied from the Wikipedia article Ken MacKenzie is displayed. That article is about another person (a baseball player) with the same name. Wikipedia has no article about the author. The error is not in Wikipedia but in the website of the National Library of Australia. We are not affiliated with them and I don't know how their website works but if they lack information about somebody then maybe they just copy a Wikipedia article and hope it's the right person. I realize it may be frustrating for you that the library and Wikipedia just blame eachother but I really don't see what Wikipedia can do about this. We have more than 4 milion articles and allow others to copy them. Thousands of unrelated websites have copies of Wikipedia articles. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:19, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
