Waterskiing or Water Skiing: one word or two?[edit]

Waterskiing is the article title but waterskiing and water skiing are used interchangably throughout the article, and the predominant usage is as two words. Which is it? Czoal (talk) 01:05, 2 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The title is inconsistent with the lede sentence. That is undesirable. I will be renaming the article, which will retain the one-word form as a redirect. Robert McClenon (talk) 02:14, 2 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, but how about the other inconistencies in the article: waterski vs. water ski, and waterskier vs. water skier? They are also used interchangably. And how about Category:Waterskiing? Also, Queenie (waterskiing elephant). Finally, I see United States Waterskiing Team, which has no sourcing to prove it even exists; I did a quick search and found nothing. Is it a hoax article? It's the article creator's only edit. Czoal (talk) 02:40, 2 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Provisions of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act[edit]

Help[edit]

For the convenience of editors, these are the articles at the heart of the dispute: Virginia Tech National Capital Region, Virginia Tech Richmond Center, and Virginia Tech Roanoke Center. All of them were recently created by Huskers110110. Czoal (talk) 05:41, 2 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Just my two cents. I think you should continue talking to Widefox. The concerns about all the articles you have created about various Virginia Tech entities appear to be legitimate. From a quick glance, the articles read as advertsing - even with prices included, like here in Virginia Tech National Capital Region - and all of them are relying completely on Virginia Tech- or Virginia Tech-related websites for its sourcing. I don't see any secondary sources. There are also copyright violations; you cannot copy and paste content from a source. It looks like you've put in a lot of time and effort into these articles. But are you being paid to write them? Or do you have some other type of conflict of interest? Do you edit, or have you edited, under other accounts? Czoal (talk) 03:15, 2 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Huskers110110: part of the reason User:Widefox may appear to be "pressing" for answers is that you clearly appear to be avoiding giving direct answers to simple questions. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 12:31, 2 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I've got 5 help notifications mentioning me in different pages, rather than a simple answer to what's going on. I was even willing to let others discuss these issues but Help suggested continuing dialogue with me, so I did. Seems WP:BOOMERANG, and either a desperate new editor needing help or arguably WP:FORUMSHOPPING. For a new editor, their level of proficiency is impressive, so the question about other accounts seems pertinent. Another editor has undercovered copyvios in these articles so there's more urgent issues too. Widefox; talk 12:45, 2 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Mobile chevrons[edit]

When a page first loads, all the chevrons point upwards but the content is collapsed. When a section is then opened, the cheuron still points upward. Only when the section is then collapsed again does the chevron point upwards. I suspect this is a bug and the chevrons should initially point upwards. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Quentin Smith (talkcontribs) 06:17, 2 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I also observe this bug when I use the mobile version. The first sentences above should read "When a page first loads, all the chevrons point downwards but the content is collapsed. When a section is then opened, the cheuron still points downward. Only when the section is then collapsed again does the chevron point upwards." Maproom (talk) 09:12, 2 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Maproom: it might be worth mentioning this over at WP:Village pump (technical). --IJBall (contribstalk) 13:18, 2 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Gemma Longhurst - page deletion[edit]

Hi, I just wanted to know why the Gemma Longhurst musician page had been deleted? As I feel it is relevant to the subject of music,

Thanks, Gemma Longhurst — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A02:C7D:C2E:3400:80DE:DD87:3103:96E7 (talk) 11:55, 2 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Copyright: International Association of Commissioning Engineers, Vision and Mission[edit]

I have just submitted an article for wiki and it has been rejected and removed, the reason being that it "used copyright material", but it is my copyright and the website it directed me to show I had "copied" the material is my website? As I wrote both it is very similar. Please help how can I re-submit the material? Paul Spice — Preceding unsigned comment added by 5.36.247.208 (talk) 14:06, 2 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The easy way is to change the attribution on your webpage to make the material public domain so it can then be used freely by anybody including wikipedia. Also note that you should not really be adding stuff from your own website to wikipedia as you probably have a conflict of interest, have a read of WP:COI. MilborneOne (talk) 17:31, 2 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Aside from the problems with COI and copyright, it is usually better to summarize the purpose of the organization in neutral uninvolved terms, based on what other independent sources have reported about it. The organization's self-published "vision" or "mission" has little or no relevance in an encyclopedic article. GermanJoe (talk) 18:42, 2 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
For a subject to have a Wikipedia article it needs to have had significant coverage in published reliable sources independent of the subject. I have looked for coverage in newspapers, journals, etc., but without success so far, so it may be that your organisation is not notable in Wikipedia's terms. - David Biddulph (talk) 18:58, 2 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Paul. It is rarely appropriate to copy material from an organisation's own website, because Wikipedia has almost no interest in what an organisation (or a person, band, company, school or anything) says about themselves. It is only interested in what others, unconnected with the subject, have published about the subject. --ColinFine (talk) 21:03, 2 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Billy herrington[edit]

Gentleman, my name is Billy herrington. Your Wikipedia info states I am incorrectly labeled as bisexual or gay. I am not. I am and have always been straight , and heterosexual. Although an actor, to the gay community, I have never ever claimed to have been gay or bisexual. Can we please correct this? Thank you for your help cause naturally this more then any movies I've portrayed has caused me personal problems and well it is simply an in accurate statement I would appreciate any help or time and the effort that you put into correcting this in accuracy as it does affect me personally in my every day life when people Google me and your Wikipedia page defines me inaccurately please feel free to contact me at anytime thank you very much again for your delicate handling of this matter good means a lot to me and any of the mistakes that I have made in my past I have gone to great lengths to correct and grow and learn from and I completely understand why you may perhaps have inadvertently and mistakenly mislabeled me and I hold and begrudge you not thank you very much. Although I very much have a gay or bisexual following and in no way or am I shamed or embarrassed if I were to be of that sexual in nature I am not thank you Billy Herrington — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.132.122.254 (talk) 14:37, 2 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

That article is really terrible and has no valid English language sources. I have trimmed a lot of the poorly sourced claims and will keep it on my watchlist.
If you are Billy Herrington, other measures you can take for issues about you on Wikipedia are outlined at Wikipedia:Autobiography#Problems_in_an_article_about_you. If the oversight team gets involved, it is easier to maintain article content that is purely based upon what reliably published sources say about the subject. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 15:01, 2 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) The information was poorly sourced or u nsourced and has been removed by another editor. Are there any reliably published statements on your sexuality? if there are, we could cite those and avoid this error occurring again. DES (talk) 15:04, 2 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Removing template[edit]

How do I get rid of the "does not cite any references"-template at Kijiya. I just recreated and referenced this article. bamse (talk) 15:40, 2 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I fixed it in this edit. I suspect that your confusion arose from the fact that the template {{references}} is not the equivalent of {{reflist}}, but rather confusingly redirects to {{unreferenced}}. Deli nk (talk) 17:20, 2 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, thanks. I also got a bit confused that the references showed even without having the {{reflist}}. That's what you get when you take a wikibreak... ;-) bamse (talk) 20:59, 2 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Wayback machine[edit]

I need someone who knows about the Wayback Machine to perform their magic on the url as a reference in this diff please. Thanks in advance. Mjroots (talk) 16:55, 2 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

No problem, working on it now. Tiggerjay (talk) 17:07, 2 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Done. See this diff for details. Tiggerjay (talk) 17:12, 2 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
(EC) Not sure what you mean, but I archived the URL on the Wayback Machine, and added an archiveurl. Or tried to but got mostly editconflicted in the later part. Nil Einne (talk) 17:12, 2 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks both. Tiggerjay got what I wanted, so that when the page gets changed in the future the link will show it as it was. Mjroots (talk) 18:26, 2 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Yes that's what I tried to do, but I still find you description confusing. Note that you don't do anything to the URL. Rather you archive the page (if necessary) and then add the archive URL to the citation. The original URL should generally not be removed, as it makes the references confusing. Particularly in cases where you use a service like Webcitation with generally* non transparent archive URLs, where it loses information (if the archive URL is broken, finding another copy may be difficult or impossible since you don't know the original URL). So there is no, or should be no "magic" performed on the original URL. The "magic" is seperate from the original URL. (Unless you count archiving the URL as magic, but that's equally confusing since technically the "magic" is actually on the content at the URL, not on the URL itself.) In future, it may be better to simply ask someone to add an archive URL, or if you feel the need to specify the service, and archive URL at whatever service you prefer; to avoid such confusion. * = webcitation does support transparent archive URLs but they aren't the primary recommendation Nil Einne (talk) 16:00, 3 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Autoconfirmed?[edit]

Hi, my name is SireWonton. Why is my account not autoconfirmed? My account is more than two weeks old and I have made more than 10 edits; however, I'm not autoconfirmed yet. Can someone help me? — Preceding unsigned comment added by SireWonton (talkcontribs) 18:49, 29 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

What makes you think that you're not autoconfirmed? --David Biddulph (talk) 19:02, 29 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
You appear to meet the criteria as auto-confirmed, however know that it is a pseudo-group and not a specific permission you would see listed or associated with your username. If you're encountering problems editing while logged in, please share those problems. Otherwise you should be all set. You can read a bit more about it over at WP:CONFIRM. Tiggerjay (talk) 00:56, 31 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Well, why can't I deit semi-protected pages? — Preceding unsigned comment added by SireWonton (talkcontribs) 23:10, 1 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I have copied this here from the archives given the update above, although I'm not sure if people can offer much help, since the OP hasn't provided any more info as was suggested here Wikipedia:Reference desk/Miscellaneous#Can't edit semi-protected pages. Nil Einne (talk) 17:02, 2 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I've confirmed the user by hand. Perhaps that will solve the problem. Deor (talk) 23:01, 2 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@SireWonton: Please name the page and describe what happens when you try to edit it. If you see a message then quote it exactly. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:03, 3 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hey guys. So, @Deor: @Tiggerjay: @PrimeHunter: this is the problem I have. When you go to the page "Jason" (Greek mythology) the page is "semi-protected". When I hit the edit button, this message appears on the top right of my screen: "Note: This page has been semi-protected so that only autoconfirmed users can edit it. If you need any help getting started with editing, see the New contributors' help page." then a line break then: "11:04, August 26 2009 Cenarium protected Jason [edit=autoconfirmed] (indefinite) [move=autoconfirmed] (indefinite)" I am not saying this is a problem for me, its just that I think an error is occurring in the system since I am confirmed, can edit, but can't SAVE. SireWonton 23:13, 4 November 2015 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by SireWonton (talkcontribs) [reply]

@SireWonton: Just seeing the edit button and being able to click on it indicates that you are autoconfirmed. If you were not you would only see a "view source" button and when you clicked that you would see this warning. Not being able to save is a different issue. What exactly are you trying to change in the article? --Stabila711 (talk) 23:18, 4 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Not much @Stabila711: but I want to know why I cannot save edits since I am a confirmed user. Isn't that a right that a confirmed user has? — Preceding unsigned comment added by SireWonton (talkcontribs) 23:21, 4 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

You didn't really answer my question SireWonton. There are a lot of reasons why an edit would not save. Edit filters, blacklists, ect. What do you see when you try to hit the save button? Is there a warning? What happens? What are you trying to change? --Stabila711 (talk) 23:24, 4 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
All autoconfirmed users see the quoted message when they click edit on a semiprotected page like Jason. We need to know what happens when you try to save. I see you often use VisualEditor. Does the problem occur for both "Edit" and "Edit source"? PrimeHunter (talk) 23:26, 4 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Yes @Stabila711: @PrimeHunter: I did solve the problem when I use "edit source." I can edit it now, just added punctuation to the page through it. To Stabila, no, using Visual Editor the "Save Page" button is still there, but is grayed out and I can't click on it, unlike unprotected pages where it is blue, and edits go through. However, I seem to have solved the problem using edit source SireWonton 23:34, 4 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Stabila711: @PrimeHunter: Can we alert these types of users (autoconfirmed and confirmed) that editing may not be able to be saved through visual editor? SireWonton 00:25, 5 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@SireWonton: You can post at WP:VPT regarding the issue and someone there could file a bug report if necessary. On another note, you need to change your signature. Signatures should have links to both your user page and your talk page per Wikipedia:Signatures. Ping, and the notification system, will not work if your signature does not have links to your talk page. --Stabila711 (talk) 00:33, 5 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

In general, you can simply remove such unsourced allegations (especially in WP:BLP articles about living persons) yourself. But I have also trimmed a few positive details, which weren't covered by a reliable source. Ideally all non-trivial statements, both positive and negative, should be sourced. GermanJoe (talk) 22:34, 2 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Trisha paytas recently made up lies and accusations as she's done in the past to get her name in the headlines. Roger Bart's wiki now says cheater as an occupation. It's ridiculous that anyone can make up lies and it's automatically just put into print. This is grounds for slander. Eustace Folville Article; As Artistic as Factual[edit]

Eustace Folville and his Folville Gang have become known as a sort of Robin Hood and his merry men group. His wiki article reflects this and, although there are refs, it contains a very high degree of opinion and artistic license, i.e. it is not very fact based. It really needs the bias and drama to be weeded out to be a decent encyclopaedic article but that would mean trimming it back significantly. What would be the best way to do this? If you were to just add a load of [citation needed] and [dubious ] tags they would probably just sit there for an eternity... Thanks Sliven2000 (talk) 23:11, 2 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks guys. I actually decided to create a new article that is related to the Folville/Zouch/Beler/Willoughby affair and leads into it (see William Trussell). When you start linking the different actors involved in an incident you start to get a clearer view of what happened and why. Think I will still a) move some of the Folville family info into Eustace's father John Folville, b) add a background section to Eustace Folville to give an idea of events leading up to the Beler murder c) cut down some of the remaining vagaries/opinions Sliven2000 (talk) 16:44, 3 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Meramacsharks, I fixed the date in the Washington Post citation in the Alexander Ovechkin article. {{cite news}} and the other cite templates do not support the format MM/DD/YYYY, because it is ambiguous. The only all-numeric format supported is YYYY-MM-DD. Another time, please provide a link to the article you are asking for help with, and sign your edit with four tildes (~~~~). It makes it much easier for a responding volunteer. Thank you. DES (talk) 05:34, 3 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
