February 3[edit]

Coordinates[edit]

How do I add coordinates to a wikipedia page? Normally, I try looking at another page as an example, but I couldn't figure it out. These are the coordinates I want to add. Latitude: 38.881112 | Longitude: -97.202804 Ramesty (talk) 03:16, 3 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Ramesty. Like this: GMGtalk 03:18, 3 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think I did something right. I tried adding it to this page, but it didn't work. I'm not sure if it should be in the infobox or in the Brown Memorial Foundation section (the coordinates are for the building, the Brown Memorial Foundation) Ramesty (talk) 03:49, 3 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Ramesty. It did work. The coordinates were at the top of the page. I put them in in a different way so that they are both in the article and the top of the page. As this is a bio and the coordinates are for the foundation the section on it is the best place. CambridgeBayWeather, Uqaqtuq (talk), Sunasuttuq 06:06, 3 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Creating a New Page[edit]

Hello, My name is Serena, and I am the Marketing Officer of PIAFF Boutique in Lebanon.

I require to create a page about PIAFF Boutique on Wikipedia. It will include content such as "History, Boutique Architecture and Design, List of Brands, Media and Press presence and some links written about the Boutique). The page would be a lot similar to Colette (Boutique). However, I can't edit other articles due to lack of time.

Is it possible to create a page for the Boutique in another way.

Waiting for your answer. Thank you in advance. — Preceding unsigned comment added by PiaffBoutique (talkcontribs) 11:27, 3 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The first thing you need to do is read about conflict of interest and make the mandatory declaration of paid editing. After that you can look at the definition of notability at WP:NCORP, and after that you could read the advice at WP:Your first article. --David Biddulph (talk) 11:42, 3 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
If the company is notable, then someday, someone will possibly create an article for it. Unlike you, someone is preferably someone with no affiliation with the company. You on the other hand have failed to read and comply with out user name policy. – Finnusertop (talkcontribs) 11:45, 3 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Account blocked under user name policy. Soft blocked since this is the only edit, so not used for promotion Jimfbleak - talk to me? 14:20, 3 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

David Soul dying rumours 2018[edit]

Hello,

I‘ve just been on the page of the actor/singer David Soul, and find a remark (at the end of the "private life" section) that he is currently on life support following a stroke at "the end of 2017". However, a link on mediamass I am not allowed to post here informs that there were actually rumours about Soul's death (not only in 2017, but also) in 2018, answering which his reps confirmed on 2 Feb 2018 (yesterday) that the actor is alive and well. Could you perhaps look a the page and see to this? As I am not currently a contributor, I hesitate about just taking the sentence down myself.

Thank you so much!

Thanks, I've removed it. -- zzuuzz (talk) 12:01, 3 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I concur. Rumours of his death have been greatly exaggerated. nagualdesign 21:32, 3 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Underwood International College's talk page[edit]

Hello,

At the article Underwood International College's talk page, user Doodle2017 is making possibly defamatory claims about an author of a research article I have cited.

Doodle2017 claims that I am the author. I take this as a compliment since I am not a published author with a doctoral degree. However, the claims are possibly defamatory for the real author assuming that this kind of claims are harmful for one's reputation.

I am perfectly willing to prove my identity to a Wikipedia moderator if you think this message doesn't prove that I'm not the author.

Link to the modification: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Talk:Underwood_International_College&diff=prev&oldid=823745551

Kind regards, Kailliak

Kailliak (talk) 14:03, 3 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

 • David Biddulph has reverted the edit. I guess if you have similar problems even once more, report this at WP:ANI. I expect the editor will be indefinitely blocked if this occurs again. Also, I noticed you accused the editor some time last year of being a sock puppet, but you did this extensively on the talk page of the article. In the future, if you have credible evidence for the same, take the complaint to the WP:SPI desk rather than place them on the talk page of the article. Feel free to come back here for any further advice. Lourdes 14:51, 3 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Invisible city maps[edit]

Resolved

Well, clearly not invisible of course ;) but e.g., Chester, in the IB it has a map showing Chester city within england—but when I look at the code (in order to steal!)—it doesn't seem to "be" there. The only images are the ones above and below where the map is. Any thoughts on this HelpDeskers? Many thanks in advance as ever! >SerialNumber54129...speculates 16:50, 3 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Serial Number 54129:--Coordinates parameter does the magic, which is dependent on Template:Coord. The UK infobox place template has a fixed default image--File:United Kingdom adm location map.svg and the co-ordinates is marked on this map.:)~ Winged BladesGodric 16:55, 3 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
WBG Check  :) I was slowly coming to the conclusion it must be something to do with that (as of course another thing tripping me up was how the red dot disappeared too!). But never mind that now: leading neatly on to the next question, is it possible to use that facility to produce a map with four locations on together? Cheers, >SerialNumber54129...speculates 16:58, 3 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It is, but for something like that you'd probably be better off drawing or annotating some appropriate markers on the map yourself and using ImageMap to make the various locations clickable links (see Winter Palace#Elizabeth (1741–1762) or Hampstead Heath#Gallery for a couple of very different examples of ImageMap in use). The markup looks complicated but is actually fairly simple once you get the hang of it. ‑ Iridescent 17:07, 3 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm..ImageMap is a quite good tool.User:Anna Frodesiak is one example:)~ Winged BladesGodric 17:15, 3 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) As usual, Iridescent, many many thanks... I think the installation of ImageMap looks complex, let alone using it! To be fair, though, they don't really need to be clickable, smart as that would be- they're linked in the article well enough, and I really just want to show their proximity to each other. Would I particularly embarrass myself by saying I'm probably ust about capable of doing it dirty on PDN ;) Cheers WBG too! >SerialNumber54129...speculates 17:16, 3 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
ImageMap is already installed here; all you need to do is use it. The code isn't particularly complex–for example:
<div style="position:relative;">

</div>
is the code that produces the clickable-and-labelled photo at Hampstead Heath. ‑ Iridescent 17:21, 3 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Oh. It might work after all, ta... "just one more thing"- those x/y axes can be got from the coordinates? >SerialNumber54129...speculates 17:27, 3 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The x and y coordinates are just the horizontal and vertical placements relative to the width of the image, where 0=left/bottom and 1=right/top - thus (assuming the image is square) x=.75, y=.25 will place it 34 of the way across the image and 14 of the way up. It's easiest to put them in as rough guesswork ("this is a third of the way across and near the top so x=.3 y=.9") and play about with the numbers in preview mode or a sandbox until the markers are in the right place, rather than try to calculate the placements exactly from the start. ‑ Iridescent 17:35, 3 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
On it—thanks again >SerialNumber54129...speculates 18:06, 3 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Well, half on it-Iridescent, is it possible to use the red buttons (the ones that maps use) as markers rather than those little symbols? >SerialNumber54129...speculates 18:24, 3 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

No, don't worry aboout it—I think it's as good as it gets. Thanks all! >SerialNumber54129...speculates 19:14, 3 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Personally, I'd just do it with • (which outputs as ) rather than faffing around with code. RexxS is good at these things, but is presumably currently watching a group of middle-aged white men discuss how to solve diversity issues at present. ‑ Iridescent 20:03, 3 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Ha! There's a certain irony that it's being held in Newspeak House  :) >SerialNumber54129...speculates 20:27, 3 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Verification of the material[edit]

Hello) Could you please tell me if there is no verification of some information in the article by any reliable sources, should we delete this information at all?--212.90.63.158 (talk) 17:50, 3 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe, but only if you have searched for reliable sources and you are sure that they cannot be found. It is much better to add sources than to delete material that could be referenced with a bit of effort. You could always add a [citation needed] tag if you are not sure. Dbfirs 19:57, 3 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your answer! :))--Eugenialiutaya (talk) 11:20, 4 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Eugenialiutaya: Over 1000 edits in less than a month? That's some going! At first my alarm bells were ringing but looking at a handful of your contributions they look pretty kosher. Your hands must be a blur! Do try to use edit summaries though, lest somebody mistake you for a vandal. And welcome to Wikipedia! nagualdesign 12:04, 4 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Image uploads request page[edit]

Is it possible to create such a page that agrees to upload images on behalf of those who can't? There's been an anonymous user bothering me for months by asking me to upload posters of Indian films, and sometimes he repeats his requests; also, it's been hard for me to find the time to upload images since I am an office-goer. --Kailash29792 (talk) 18:00, 3 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Already exists at Wikipedia:Files for upload. ‑ Iridescent 18:05, 3 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, sorry I didn't realise. My bad. Please archive this request. ----Kailash29792 (talk) 18:14, 3 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Rewriting copyvio[edit]

The article Air Moorea Flight 1121 has a copyright violation template. I've written my own version of the section from scratch on the talk page, but there's no listing on WP:CP for this page. How do I bring it to the attention of whoever is in charge of removing the copyright template? Generalcp702user talk 19:23, 3 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Generalcp702: Within the copyright notice there is a line "Otherwise, you may write a new article without copyright-infringing material. Click "Show" to read where and how." and a button "show". Follow the instructions there. Thank you. Eagleash (talk) 19:46, 3 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Edit Keeps being undone[edit]

Hello All, My edit On My village's page keeps being taken of/ reverted even though it's a genuine edit regarding a film that is being shot in the village. clue bot keeps taking it down and it's frustrating as it's not even vandalism. any help would be appreciated. Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by LiamD1998 (talkcontribs) 23:12, 3 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

It wasn't just ClueBot. See the edit summary here: Non-notable addition that's promotional. nagualdesign 23:32, 3 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Offensive Picture (Drawing) for the Sufi Order Founder Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba on WIkipedia[edit]

It has been brought to our attention that the picture of a drawing purporting to represent Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba on Wikipedia is not only wrong but offensive to millions of disciples of the Sufi Order he founded known as Mouridism. Please delete and replace with his real (and only) photo he has. You can find this photo on this link (and in hundreds of websites):https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheikh_Ahmadou_Bamba Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mouridology (talkcontribs) 23:40, 3 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

This is the English Wikipedia help desk. You need to post this at the Italian Wikipedia help desk where the picture resides. nagualdesign 23:45, 3 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
My mistake. You're talking about this article? What is it about the drawing that you find offensive? nagualdesign 23:48, 3 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Done The file on Italian Wikipedia is available at commons. I have replaced the image at en. wiki (Amadou Bamba). Eagleash (talk) 23:51, 3 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I'm still curious though, the previous image was a crop of File:Mouride Mural DSCN1065.jpg, a mural on a wall in Dakar, Senegal, Showing leaders of the Mouride Sufi sect, including Ahmadu Bamba and Ibrahima Fall, and El Hadj Malick Sy, or Mouhamadou Fadilou Mbacké. What is it that you find offensive? nagualdesign 23:55, 3 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Looking at the talk pages at the image file pages here and at the Commons it seems like that picture may have actually been of his son. I can see why that would offend millions of people. (Not really.) nagualdesign 00:02, 4 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
nagualdesign, see the antepenultimate paragraph of Amadou Bamba for an explanation. Maproom (talk) 08:21, 4 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for that. It does make sense that the only photograph of him would be venerated. Having read that paragraph, and considering the distinct similarity of the figure in the mural to the photograph, I can't imagine why anyone would think that it's a picture of his son rather than a prime example of the sort of veneration described in that paragraph. Still, if the OP speaks on behalf of millions of offended disciples of the Sufi Order who am I to argue with them, eh? nagualdesign 11:00, 4 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
