Number of pages in a category, including pages in subcategories[edit]

Hello. When you visit the listing for a category, e.g. Category:British actors, the UI displays the total number of pages that are immediate members of that category. However, this tabulation excludes pages classified within subcategories. Furthermore, while there is also a magic word "{{PAGESINCATEGORY:British actors}}", this suffers from the same issue. Is there a simple way to determine the number of pages in a category, including pages within subcategories? (Ideally, this would include subcategories of subcategories, and so on indefinitely.) Finding good sources about academics[edit]

Hi all, I'm looking to write/expand a couple articles about academics in my fields of interest. Matthew Ohland is the first I've looked at, so let's take him as an example. He meets WP:NACADEMIC as an IEEE fellow, but I'm having a hard time finding proper independent sources - most of the sources are his university websites, author bios from conferences, that sort of thing. Any suggestions on where to find good sources? The best I've found so far was a couple of quotes from him in academic journals. creffett (talk) 01:50, 4 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It's not easy, but there are obvious blanks to fill. "His research on the longitudinal study of engineering students, team assignment, peer assessment, and active and collaborative teaching methods have been supported [...]." What did the research conclude? How have other researchers reacted to this? "Ohland was named [a Fellow of each of three organizations] for his contributions to and leadership in engineering education." What were his contributions? "Dr. Ohland [and his?] team received Best Paper awards [...]." What are the papers? How have they been cited in later papers written by others? -- Hoary (talk) 02:03, 4 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I have a guide to writing about academics at User:StarryGrandma/Writing an article about a professor or researcher. For basic facts about a professor it is fine to use their faculty webpage and their curriculum vitae (CV) if you can find it. Ohland's faculty web page is here and his CV is here. My new page could not be published[edit]

Hi I am working on an artist page and it could not be published.

I have never created an artist page from scratch before but I took reference from an existing artist page but still didn't work.

@WhyNotMusic: It seems your draft, Draft:YuE, was restored per your request. The primary problem I see is that it is not in English. I can't comment much further, as I don't read Chinese. Also, a non-logged-in ("IP") user has apparently submitted it for review, which will undoubtedly be declined. Using an existing artist page as a guide is a good idea. Using an existing page as a guide is a good idea if you know that it is a well-constructed article (for example if it is in the category of Category:Good articles). Getting the social handles of Urdu Wikipedia verified[edit]

Hello, I want to ask on behalf of the Urdu Wikipedia community about getting a blue tick on the social handles of Urdu Wikipedia. I've seen the handles of Arabic Wikipedia verified so far. How do I request a verified badge on Facebook? Despite the title, that page says what the requirements are, but not how to apply.
Verify your business Upload documents that prove that your business is a legally registered business with official authorities. Might work if you were Wikimedia Pakistan, but wouldn't apply to Urdu Wikipedia.
[2] says you can also verify with a phone number. Page settings – General – Verify.
I notice that the About page for Arabic Wikipedia on Facebook lists a San Francisco location and a wikimedia.org email address.

On a separate note, Wikimedia Foundation owns trademarks in the Wikipedia brand. I'm frankly surprised that they would let a language community (as opposed to an affiliate that has signed contracts, etc.) use that in an official capacity, and dismayed they would think it's a good idea. Start by removing the references to Wikipedia. (Wikipedia is not regarded as a reliable source. Yes, this may sound strange, but there it is.) You have two other sources. One of them is this (I didn't look at the other). It looks OK to me; perhaps Sulfurboy (who said the sources aren't reliable) would like to comment here on what's unsatisfactory about The News Minute in general or that article in particular. -- Hoary (talk) 07:53, 4 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, JIP's right. Anyway, although you Sayuurii put these links in what were formatted as references, you weren't using them as references (implying that information was derived from them). I simply removed both of them. I've also made other changes to the article. Aepickett92, firstly, you should read wp:coi and wp:paid; there are some additional rules paid editors need to follow.

Secondly, as logos typically aren't under free licenses, we can only use them under fair use. As these rules are a bit complicated, and images need to be tagged properly as fair use, I would recommend you make a request at wp:files for upload, which will handle the process for you.

User talk page redesign to unconventional standards[edit]

Is it considered acceptable on Wikipedia for a user to redesign their Talk page such that the font is Comic Sans (low readability for narrative) and the background is emerald green? I find the contrast to be insufficient for rapid comprehension. It seems to me that the outcome of these changes is that the user's Wikipedia interactions are harder to monitor, yet otherwise "in compliance" on Talk page format. Quisqualis; Wikipedia:Talk page guidelines states Avoid excessive use of color and other font gimmicks, which I would class this as. I'd poltiely ask the user to change it, as it isn't excatly the most blatant violation though. ~~ Alex Noble - talk 15:45, 4 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

How to enlarge a thumb picture?[edit]

Hello, Can someone tell me how to enlarge the thumbs used to illustrate an article?

the thumb picture on the upper right side is quite small,
and I would like to enlarge it to fill the blank space on the right

Right forum[edit]

Where's the best place to start a discussion regarding the proper use of "given name" vs "hndis"? I and User:Narky Blert disagree with regard to the categorization of Seba. Clarityfiend (talk) 19:47, 4 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

This question follows on from a brief discussion at User talk:Narky Blert#Seba, which gives some background. I suggest WT:DAB, but have no strong feelings; wherever will get the best input.

The issue relates principally to DAB pages, but Wikipedia:WikiProject Anthroponymy might also be able to contribute and should perhaps be notified.

Clarityfiend's username is very appropriate here: I see fuzziness in the documentation of some important templates, in particular {{dab}} and {{hndis}}. Narky Blert (talk) 20:21, 4 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Narky Blert: The thing is, we have three templates/categories: "given name", "surname" and "hndis". What's the use of having all three if you want to subsume the first (and by implication the second) in the third? @Clarityfiend: Because that's not how it works. hndis is a unique (though possibly ambiguous) identifier. Given name and surname are almost by definition not unique (excluding the rare cases where we only have one article about someone with a particular surname, see {{R from surname}}). In some cultures, e.g. Iceland, some parts of India, and Vietnam, people are identified only by their given name: they have no surname, only a patronymic. Their names are inevitably ambiguous. In other cultures, notably Arabic, the same person may be identified either as "bin" (son of, a patronymic) or as "abu" (father of, a sort of reverse patronymic); again, ambiguity. @Narky Blert: How is hndis a unique identifier? The necessity for hndis is because it isn't unique. You're swimming against a very strong tide. Is it ok to put a (non pornographic) link to Pornhub at the bottom of the article?[edit]

Hi, I just wrote a short article about a documentary film Shakedown (2018 film) that was released on Pornhub as its first non pornographic content. So is it OK to put a link at the bottom of the article that links to the documentary on Pornhub? It's not a pornographic film, but yeah just wasn't sure if that was ok or not.
