January 24[edit]

First time split[edit]

I bodly split an over-long episode list: Ancient AliensList of Ancient Aliens episodes. This would be a first for me. Other than adjusting the box and line colors, I am not confident I applied all other bells and whistles a list article of this kind would require. Is there a guide for such a split, and what other changes should I apply? Thosbsamsgom (talk) 09:33, 24 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Thosbsamsgom: Congratulations; that looks great.--Gronk Oz (talk) 09:42, 24 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
There is one problem I found, sorry. In Ancient Aliens, the season number in the table of episodes is meant to be a Wikilink to the relevant season. That link has been broken now; they need to be changed to something like List_of_Ancient_Aliens_episodes#Season_1_(2010).--Gronk Oz (talk) 09:50, 24 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Including the underscores? Thosbsamsgom (talk) 10:03, 24 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Used the includeonly tag. Seems to be working. Thosbsamsgom (talk) 10:15, 24 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Upload: cannot answer questions[edit]

I am trying to upload a picture that cannot go to Commons because it is in copyright in Ireland. (It is PD in US.) I filled in the form but there were two questions that had no space provided to answer. The Upload button remained gray and I am stymied.Roryjohnston (talk) 10:18, 24 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Can you give a link to the form you tried to use? Maproom (talk) 15:06, 24 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I tried it again and it worked. But the uploaded file says "Fair Use". This is public domain, not fair use. How do I get a public domain description with a warning that image may be copyright in another country?Roryjohnston (talk) 20:27, 24 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Put a {{PD-USonly}} on it. Depending on why it's PD in the US and not in Ireland, there may be a more appropriate tag, likely {{PD-ineligible-USonly}}. —Cryptic 20:36, 24 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Invisible maintenance messages on cite templates[edit]

For the past three days, it seems that just about every time I preview a change, the following message appears at the top:

Script warning: One or more {{cite book}} templates have maintenance messages; messages may be hidden (help).

However, there are no maintenance messages to tell me what the actual problem is. I looked at the Help and it talks about putting special code somewhere to hide messages, but by default they should show - I have never done such coding. So where are the messages? What is the problem? I took a good look for obvious problems and I can't see them, but some of these articles have lots of refs so I really need some sort of hint where to look. Are other people getting these messages, and what do they mean? Any help gratefully received.--Gronk Oz (talk) 13:16, 24 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, other people are seeing the same messages. A question was asked at Help talk:Citation Style 1#templates have maintenance messages, but there is still confusion. --David Biddulph (talk) 14:14, 24 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
It appears to only happen when previewing an edit. I have noticed the previewing your edit has been a bit buggy lately as when I previewed my edit of adding {{clear}} to KING WIKIPEDIAN DCCLXIV's user page some of the userboxes showed up as broken code, but not when the edit was actually published. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 14:46, 24 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Proof of the right of the photographer[edit]

Hi friends, I took a photo of a public figure in our small town, and that person posted his photo in most of the cyberspace, and now I am writing for that public figure. How can I prove the photo I took to Wikipedia?--Nazanin1376 (talk) 14:59, 24 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

For further context, see User talk:Nazanin1376#photographBlaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 15:22, 24 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Nazanin1376 According to the exif data alongside the photo on Commons here, it was taken on a ILCE-7M3 camera, which has a 24 megapixel (6000 x 4000 pixel) sensor. The upload looks like a crop of that, to 3673 × 3961 pixels. I, too, would have cropped the image to make a decent picture. However, if you still have the original at full resolution, you could upload that and this would surely convince anyone that you were the original photographer. Alternatively, you should ask the subject, Zahra Meygoli, to email permissions-commons@wikimedia.org to confirm that the uploader of the photo was entitled to do so as its copyright holder. Such an email would be confidential. Mike Turnbull (talk) 17:46, 24 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
If Nazanin took the picture, they would be the copyright holder. Meygoli would have nothing whatsoever to do with it. --Orange Mike | Talk 19:22, 24 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Nazanin1376, the image is on Commons, so you need to follow their process, not en Wikipedia's. There is a similar question at Commons:Help desk#My images were falsely taken down for copyright infringement with the answer "Please note that whenever images or other media have been published before without a free licence, our rules require that the copyright holder sends a permission by email. See VRT for instructions how to contact our volunteer email team to verify your authorship. Once this has been processed, the files will be restored automatically." TSventon (talk) 11:41, 25 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Or alternately: donate more photos (ones that haven't been used elsewhere in cyberspace) to Commons from the same camera (with matching exif data intact). It not hard proof because [BEANS], but building a body of "own-work" contributions may help. P.S. nice photo, how would it look rotated so that the boards in the background were vertical? Would that create too much tilt to her face? ⁓ Pelagicmessages ) 12:40, 25 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Also, Nazanin1376, when you say I am writing for that public figure, do you mean “I am writing about that public figure”, or is there some connection between you and Ms. Meygoli beyond you just being a fan? ⁓ Pelagicmessages ) 12:48, 25 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Any Commons admins who could look at deleted c:File:Karestoonegoli.jpg? ⁓ Pelagicmessages ) 13:09, 25 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
No, I'm a fan of her, I just took pictures of her a few times--Nazanin1376 (talk) 18:13, 25 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
If the photo was copied, it would not give you this information from the aperture to the shutter speed, etc., so that I could inform all my friends who intend to call me a liar, and this is my disappointment. To continue working in a place full of mistrust. And the next thing about the photo is that every photo goes into Photoshop, the proportions change, meaning it does not output camera information, it just gives you pixels and quality. Succeed in evaluating photographer data. Keep in mind that in your opinion, why do world photography festivals back up Photoshop and keep a raw version of the photo of the photographer? Wishing success to all friends --Nazanin1376 (talk) 18:23, 25 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

What No Logo for the 2022 Pro Bowl Why Didin't You Upload it for. 98.186.54.177 (talk) 15:21, 24 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

We're all volunteers. Why don't you upload it, if it is something you are interested in? You can use WP:FFU if you need help. RudolfRed (talk) 16:44, 24 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Why do you do this? Every year you come here and rudely demand that people do something you want done, usually insulting us in the process (yes, I know you removed the insult a minute later), and you always get told you can do it yourself. --ColinFine (talk) 12:12, 25 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi again! We provided suggestions on January 14 (see Wikipedia:Help desk/Archives/2022 January 14#2022 Pro Bowl), and it seems you haven't followed them yet. GoingBatty (talk) 13:57, 25 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Editing the Stjephan HAUSER page[edit]

Hello,

I am contacting the Help desk regarding my recent edit to the Stjephan HAUSER page. I am working for HAUSER and these edits were specifically requested by him, because the current page is filled with false information and needs to be updated to the version that I attempted to create (a few times now). I am wondering why the changes are seen as "not constructive" when the current version of the page is completely false, and the information that I have attempted to provide to Wikipedia is coming directly from the source. I would like to know how to edit this page so that the current Wikipedia page of Stjephan HAUSER can be changed to the new version that I have tried to edit it to.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

You need to read about conflict of interest, and you must make the mandatory declaration of paid editing. --David Biddulph (talk) 16:33, 24 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Sheen101e (ec) You are required by the Terms of Use to declare as a paid editor, please see WP:PAID. Please also read WP:COI. You should avoid direct edits to the article on your client, but you may propose formal edit requests(click for instructions) detailing changes you feel are needed. Please understand that Wikipedia summarizes what independent reliable sources say, not necessarily what the subject might want it to say. However, if those sources are not being accurately summarized, please say how on the article talk page. 331dot (talk) 16:36, 24 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Sheen101e Wikipedia does not want and will not accept "information directly from the source" because we have no mechanism to verify it and no desire to establish such a mechanism, and our volunteer editors are not required to identify themselves. Instead, we insist on attributing our information to "reliable sources" that do have such verification mechanisms and who are not anonymous. We apply this rule to all statements in all articles: any editor may remove any unsourced information at any time, often after reaching consensus. We try to be especially rigorous for information about living persons (see WP:BLP): editors are not merely permitted, but urged, to immediately remove unsourced assertions in this case and reach consensus only after that removal. -Arch dude (talk) 17:22, 24 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The term Israelism[edit]

The term Israelism is not some stupid song, as is shown on Wikipedia (someone's advertisement). Israelism is a Biblical religion, with a specific definition. I need help to add the correct definiton of "Israelism" — Preceding unsigned comment added by 50.34.161.128 (talk) 18:03, 24 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Why do you call the song stupid? It was a big hit. We have articles on British Israelism and the Black Hebrew Israelites. Cullen328 (talk) 18:43, 24 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure what else is required to publish an article[edit]

I was very rudely insulted by one of the team members (theroadislong) and accused of being "clearly not notable," even though I am mentioned in other articles (for example, Kelela) for my music production work as well as being signed to a very highly regarded label (Stones Throw Records) and having released music for many years. I was simply looking for help on how to post information about the work I've done, with reliable sources. Please DO NOT send me a reply from that same user, I will not be insulted again. If more information is needed about me, it can be found at www.stonesthrow.com/frankiereyes and if you need more sites I can send plenty. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Puserisrivate (talkcontribs) 19:58, 24 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

OP blocked. 331dot (talk) 20:16, 24 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Calling another editor a "miserable a***hole" for pointing out Wikipedia's guidelines on notability didn't help; and the fact that in this post the blocked account openly admits that they are spamming us about themselves was liver frosting on the s**t sandwich. --Orange Mike | Talk 21:00, 24 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
There was certainly no intention on my behalf to insult you, "notability" has a very specific meaning on Wikipedia, see WP:GNG. Theroadislong (talk) 20:28, 24 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
For which reason I am generally careful to use the phrase "does not meet Wikipedia's criteria for notability" rather than "is not notoable". --ColinFine (talk) 12:15, 25 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there! The Who released "Pinball Wizard" in 1969, and The Shadows released a cover version in 1973 on their album Rockin' with Curly Leads. GoingBatty (talk) 14:07, 25 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Google's translation of their question: Question about The Who pinball Wizard or is it Shadows pinball wizard see me feel me? Who before? (I don't know if it's accurate or not) ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 14:15, 25 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Also, for whatever reason, when looking at the history, the Cyrillic character "и" displays as "u" which I find interesting. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 14:17, 25 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Blaze Wolf: Cyrillic script#Italic and cursive_forms. Bazza (talk) 14:53, 25 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
From the Google translate, I would guess that they are asking which was released first. GoingBatty answered that The Who's version was first (and it's the original; The Who wrote it). 73.127.147.187 (talk) 14:35, 26 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Is there a way to filter my contributions by size to find articles I've created from redirects and stubs?[edit]

Resolved

Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 23:11, 8 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi all

I'd really like to create a list of articles I've created, however I've realised that the wmflabs tool doesn't count pages created where a redirect already exists or where I've taken a one line description and created a full article. What would be a good way to do this? If someone explains here I can write it up somewhere for others to use.

Thanks

Statements indicating that persons are providing misinformation[edit]

I have noticed on certain articles about individuals, where statements they have made are being labelled as misinformation. This trend is somewhat new, but the troubling part is that references supporting the misinformation labels are, in numerous cases, “opinion pieces”. Is an opinion piece suitable (or enough) evidence to state someone as providing misinformation? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.146.221.145 (talk) 21:49, 24 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

It would help to know which articles you refer to, but I gather that you are probably referring to certain articles about political figures. Wikipedia summarizes what independent reliable sources say about a person. If they say a person gives misinformation, that's what we say as long as the source is summarized accurately. If a source is not summarized accurately, or is not reliable, please discuss that on the article talk page- but I would suggest you review any prior discussions first. 331dot (talk) 22:02, 24 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I notice people often don't provide any examples for these. I wonder why? Skarmory (talk • contribs) 04:53, 25 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Also note that any bias in sources will be reflected in Wikipedia. We don't claim to be free of bias, the sources are presented to readers so they can evaluate and judge them for themselves. 331dot (talk) 22:04, 24 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Link working in desktop, but not iOS mobile version[edit]

For some reason, links to the Do You Believe? (film) work fine in the desktop version, but every link to the film that I've found using the iOS mobile version all redirect to the disambiguation page: Do You Believe?. Is it just me or is this also not working for others? Jauerbackdude?/dude. 21:59, 24 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Jauerback: Please always give an example. Is it broken in your post? It works for me on an iPhone 8 with iOS 14.7.1, both in the mobile version of the site (using the iOS browser Safari) and in the official Wikipedia App for iOS. There are also third party apps at Help:Mobile access. Please clarify what you use. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:56, 24 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
PrimeHunter, sorry about that. I should have known better to provide better information. I'm using a iPhone 12 with iOS 15.2.1 and the official Wikipedia app. The direct link I put above works for me in the app, but if I try to get to it from the disambiguation page linked above, it just goes right back to itself (the Do You Believe? disambiguation page). I've also tried accessing the link to the film from both the Mira Sorvino and Sean Astin pages and they also both go back to the disambiguation page rather than to the film. All browsers (including the iOS ones work fine). Jauerbackdude?/dude. 13:32, 25 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. It also fails for me in the Wikipedia app but only in links from mainspace. It's a variation of phab:T272752 by MCleinman (WMF): "App mishandles internal links to articles ending in question mark". It appears to happen for any page name with a question mark. The link to Kalamazoo? works in User talk:Haseoner but not in Kalamazoo (disambiguation) where it changes to Kalamazoo (a redirect to Kalamazoo, Michigan). The link is cut off before the question mark. Do You Believe? (film) becomes Do You Believe which redirects to Do You Believe? The link ? goes to Main Page, e.g. at ASCII#Character set. The search function works in the app so the articles are not completely inaccessible but it's disappointing there is no action on phab:T272752 after a year. PrimeHunter (talk) 18:39, 25 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for looking into this. I agree that it's a bit disappointing that this was reported over a year, but at least it's not "just me" that it's happening to. Jauerbackdude?/dude. 00:49, 26 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Inflation template usage[edit]

How do I get the template, on the example ...that cost in 1906 $1,000 (28,804)..., to show 2020 dollars with a dollar sign? Am I using the template correctly? Can you show proper usage. Thanks.--Doug Coldwell (talk) 22:20, 24 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I have a little thing in my sandbox I copy and paste for this. It's (equivalent to ${{formatprice|{{inflation|US|amount|year|r=0}}}} in {{inflation/year|US}}) -- for $1 in 1890 this renders as "(equivalent to $34.00 in 2023)". The reason I use {{inflation/year}} instead of {{CURRENTYEAR}} is because the figures aren't curent (per the documentation at Template:Inflation). I am thinking of making some template for this where you only have to give the amount and the year, since I use this often. jp×g 22:43, 24 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I already did, it's {{USDCY}}. So it'd be like "$1,000 in 1906 {{USDCY|1000|1906}}". jp×g 23:03, 24 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Great template. Makes it simple and effective to most current year output. Thanks, just what I need. --Doug Coldwell (talk) 09:57, 25 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • @JPxG: I used your new Inflation template on Lambert (automobile). The various years' costs of the antique cars are now represented with the current year dollar amount of the latest inflation year available automatically. That is real neat -> thanks again!--Doug Coldwell (talk) 11:04, 25 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
