Obituary

Some while ago I was instrumental in creating a page on Wikipedia (bibliography of my father,Wing Commander Douglas Rivers Bagnall). MOS:CAPS in citation

Rejected article

I have written an article about Jasna Horvat which was reviewed, accepted and then removed. The user Scope creep left a comment "Fairly low H-index for subject asserting WP:NPROF. Needs proper examination by review". I'd very much like some help to put the article up again. H-index The person does not seem notable currently, and many of your sources arent great either. (Does facebook seem like a reliable source?) It was pulled for that and being reviewed by a sock. In addition, the infobox is almost useless. WelpThatWorked (talk) 16:30, 22 December 2018 (UTC)
@Hidrogen: Hello, and thanks for your question. One of the less obvious things about Wikipedia is that writing a new article is one of the most difficult things, normally best tackled only by editors who have been making improvements to existing articles for a while. Wikipedia has a number of policies and guidelines about new articles, and the one that matters here is called "notability" - it determines whether a particular subject should have a dedicated Wikipedia article or not. There are guidelines for different types of subjects: for academics the relevant guideline can be found by following this link to WP:NPROF. Simply being a professor or having some books published is not enough - the article needs to show how the person meets the criteria listed there. And there need to be independent, reliable sources to verify those facts. Please read those 9 criteria carefully, and consider whether there are good sources to show she meets them. If so, write the article based on those sources. If not, the article should wait until she achieves greater notability. Hidrogen, I will add a template to the draft that allows you to resubmit it for review, but before you do so, I suggest that you ensure that it is fully supported by references to reliable sources. Where has Visual Editor gone??!!

Hello - I recently made some changes to a stub that someone else had created, about my grandfather F J Browne: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francis_James_Browne I did this using Visual Editor, which I found to be great. Today I wanted to add a reference, and I can't find how to get into Visual Editor. What am I doing wrong?

@GK1000: Hello and welcome to the Teahouse. Only administrators can view deleted pages, as allowing everyone to would defeat the purpose of deletion. To be an administrator you need to build up over years an edit history that shows you understand Wikipedia policies and practices, and be approved by the community. 331dot (talk) 19:56, 23 December 2018 (UTC)

It also says, “To start a page called User:Paul G. Humber/sandbox, type in the box below.” Can you see why I thought the title was misunderstood? Why would I want to start a page called that? Since I am new to the system, I may have made an error of some kind.

The doctor who championed hand-washing was Hungarian doctor, Ignaz Semmelweis. Can you imagine the disappointment he may have felt in promoting good medical practice when experiencing rejection—maybe with words like yours, “Kindly have the decency to wait until your method becomes notable and someone other than yourself promotes it.” According to the Wiki article about him, you can see these words, “his ideas were rejected by the medical community.” Eventually, his views prevailed, but it is sad that women likely died due to the delay.

Are you a philosopher? Englishman Thomas Hobbes was, and his views were right in line with concerns I have. This 17th century philosopher, in his masterwork Leviathan, wrote, “Another general error is from the misinterpretation of the words eternal life, everlasting death, and the second death. For though we read plainly in Holy Scripture that God created Adam in an estate of living for ever, which was conditional, that is to say, if he disobeyed not His commandment; which was not essential to human nature, but consequent to the virtue of the tree of life, whereof he had liberty to eat, as long as he had not sinned; and that he was thrust out of Paradise after he had sinned, lest he should eat thereof, and live for ever; and that Christ's Passion is a discharge of sin to all that believe on Him, and by consequence, a restitution of eternal life to all the faithful, and to them only: yet the doctrine is now and hath been a long time far otherwise; namely, that every man hath eternity of life by nature, inasmuch as his soul is immortal” (p438).

By “otherwise,” he was referring to the prevalent then (and even now) view, but it seems he assumed that “everlasting” was/is a good rendering for the Greek aionios, but it is not. The Greek word means lasting and is durationally indeterminate (can refer to either temporal or eternal things). The English translation, thus, should be equivalent to the Greek, but it is not. Forever is not durationally flexible, but both aionios (Greek) and lasting (English) are. Both can accommodate durational variance—temporal or eternal. Hobbes used the word “conditional” above, in line with “conditional immortality.” I am not aware of any Bible that gets aionios (NT Greek) and olam (Hebrew OT) consistently right. I may be something like Semmelweis—discerning something that needs to change.

On p. 445, Hobbes affirmed, “But there be other places of the New Testament where an immortality seemeth to be directly attributed to the wicked. For it is evident that they shall all rise to judgement. And it is said besides, in many places, that they shall go into "everlasting fire, everlasting torments, everlasting punishments; and that the worm of conscience never dieth"; and all this is comprehended in the word everlasting death, which is ordinarily interpreted "everlasting life in torments": and yet I can find nowhere that any man shall live in torments everlastingly.”

Again, he was struggling with the mistranslation, everlasting. It is sad that translators have used everlasting rather than lasting. He may not have been aware that Jesus actually nullified the mistranslation in Lk 12:47-48 and Matt 10:28. There Jesus taught proportional punishment and eventual cessation-of-being for the wicked. The word often mistranslated “everlasting” (with durational inflexibility) means lasting.

He is not the only one to recognize this problem. There are others, like Clement of Rome, Ignatius of Antioch, Justin Martyr, Irenaeus of Lyon, Defender-of-the Faith Athanasius, Martin Luther, William Tyndale, William Gladstone, Richard Weymouth, Harriet Beecher Stowe, C. S. Lewis, Clark H. Pinnock, F. F. Bruce, John Stott, Philip Hughes, and many more.

Again, if you would be willing to shepherd me through this new (for me) process—how, for example, I should diminish CoI and include references to Hobbes, etc., I would appreciate it. I realize this might take some of your time. Could I pay for services? Jesus said that a laborer is worth of his hire.

But you don't add articles on Wikipedia to gain attention and notability for your ideas; you gain attention and notability for your ideas, and then Wikipedia articles reflect that. Hello Paul G. Humber. A bot is an automatic program - a "robot": all bots (and only bots) should have user names ending with "bot". You can write about a subject if you can find reliably published sources that discuss that subject in some depth, and the you can summarise what those sources say. You should not include anything not found in your sources, and in particular you should not include any theory, argument, judgment, or conclusion which does not come directly from a single one of your sources (not even one that you reach by synthesising what two or more of the sources say). The way Wikipedia works is that everything is done by volunteers: you're perfectly at liberty to ask for something, but whether it happens or not depends on whether some volunteer editor decides to pick up your suggestion. Posting your request here is allowed, but there are other places where you are more likely to find somebody to pick it up. The general place to request articles is as Requested articles; but the truth is that the take-up rate there is quite low. Other possibilities are to find an appropriate Wikiproject and ask there; or to contact the editor who created those two articles, Angel Emfrbl, and see if they are interested (I have just pinged them, so they should see this discussion). Something you can usefully do, though, is look for reliable independent sources which talk about those vocaloids; because if there are not such sources yet, then no article is possible.

Sandbox Questions

I made a little practice edit in My Sandbox, and in trying to save it to experiment with later, I clicked the Publish button, and, naturally it was deleted by User:KylieTastic (Thanks, again, Kylie!) So now my Sandbox User:DaKine/sandbox has this big ol' Template sitting on it. So my questions are: How do I get rid of the template (I'm NOT going to resubmit), create a sandbox I can try edits out on, and save the edits to work on after I log off Wikipedia and return later without publishing the changes? Kylie came to your draft and chose to slap that decline-template because whilst publishing, you had inserted the code:-{{subst:submit}}which (post-transclusion) indicated that you have a potential article for review.
It will be prudential to note that over here, publishing is a variant of save and clicking that button (without any insertion of the above code) will just save your sandbox and let you work/practice wiki-editing without any interference. WBGconverse 07:02, 24 December 2018 (UTC)

Wikipedia is confusing Al Magharibia Channel with Al Magharibia TV

To whom it may concern, Al Magharibia Channel in youtube is erroneously being described by Wikipedia as a Moroccan Public Broadcast service because it is confusing it with the Moroccan Al Magharibia TV (one word). Anchitya. I'm sure IBT is a reliable source for some things. That article is a reliable source that Manohar claimed that it had taken Rs 35 crore in four days: it is not a reliable source for the claim itself. And the article does not even claim that The Villain took Rs 100 crore: just that one of the distributors predicted it would do so. It also says that "trade sources" have given different figures from those.
Unless you can find a solid, reliable source, wholly unconnected with the distributors or the film in any way, that categorically states that it took over 100 crore, then I advise you to drop the stick and turn your attention elsewhere. How to upload your own photograph to English Wikipedia

I uploaded a photo of Cynthia Nielsen (which I own) to Wikicommons and posted it on Cynthia Nielsen's page. It was deleted. I am new to Wikipedia and am not sure how to proceed. Yes. The photo was also used on Academia.edu, and since I own and took the picture myself, I thought it would be okay to use the same photo that had been posted there (https://udallas.academia.edu/CynthiaNielsen). I don't recall any copyright agreement. I simply uploaded the image. If I can have the image removed from Academia.edu, which I believe I can, could I then re-upload it to Wikipedia Commons, and, as it were, start from scratch? It was a major brand in its time, remembered by many "of a certain age" and I don't see why it's any less "constructive" than anything else on the list (see below) some of which are a lot more obscure!

My question is: What is the definition of constructive? Who removes the alerts at the top? Should I do that? (This article should be divided into sections by topic, to make it more accessible. Please help by adding section headings in accordance with Wikipedia's Manual of Style. (December 2018))

Not sure where to go from draft

Weight in BLP

d:Q2709 and the biography of Sasha Grey state that her mass is 50kg, and that shaky info is imported by, e.g., c:Sasha Grey. There's no obvious reference and no qualifier (a wikidata "point in time" could make sense). Is this really as it should be in a BLP? It sounds stupid, but what happens if she eats more or less than usual until the end of 2018? LP's publicity department has done an excellent job in convincing the magazines and purging information in other sources. You might like to know that her friend Alicia Godsberg was born in 1968 also. Dear გრინვეი. Because you are very new here, and have only made less than 10 edits, just follow the advice at WP:RENAME which states: "Users who have made very few edits are encouraged to register a new account and discard the old one." So, just abandon the old account and create a completely new one. Providing you don't subsequently revert to using the old one as well, this is perfectly ok, and makes far less work for our admins to do. We have thousands of abandoned acccounts here, and you could even leave a note on the old userpage that states the new name you're now using (and vice versa), if you wish. How does that sound? (edit conflict) @ForeverJustice: I can restore it as a sandbox draft in your user space so that you can use the sources in there to write a new draft. As the article was, it was hard to tell what sources support notability. I strongly recommend that you take just five sources that meet all the following points:
...And summarize, paraphrase, and cite just those five for the new draft. That will more firmly and clearly establish notability than tacking 22 references (many not primarily about Foward or not independent) at the end of a single sentence. I left some instructions on your user talk page about that. If you just post the same article all over again, it's just going to be deleted again.
Also, instead of creating new sections, you can edit an existing section by looking to the right of the title for a button that says "edit."

It seems like we are since we are dependent on Google for references and citations, and it seems that everything of note or value must be accessible via interne/ Google. Then there is the subject of local or regional notability, that hasn't yet or might never reach the attention of Google. Google's algorithm as you probably know, doesn't snag everything that is available,but to be repetitious there are a lot of primary sources, like old records,books that are literally archived or on shelves and are only accessible if one can travel, read and photograph them, then there comes the question of copyvio. Oldperson: we are absolutely not dependent on Google. Research used to happen before Google, and can still do so; for example at a major library. There is no requirement that sources be available online, and for many older subjects they are not. --ColinFine (talk) 20:17, 25 December 2018 (UTC)

Are both awaiting review. You can continue to improve these articles while they are awaiting review.

  • PPS I had a brief glance at the articles and they contain references, but lack in line citations. The reviewer will probably tell you to add them and resubmit the article. (edit conflict) @Riedener: Welcome to the Teahouse. If you revisit both drafts you will see a very obvious header message confirming they have both submitted. I fear both may be rejected initially as being rather essay-like and not containing any inline references. You may carry on working on them whilst theyre in the AFC queue. See WP:REFBEGIN for help on adding citations. You should remove the redlinked 'Main article' templates as these are not relevant, and consider the relationship between your draft and the current page on Embroidery machine. Welcome to the Teahouse, Pilot03, and seasons greetings. Had you provided a url to the page where the image sits, we might have been able to assist further. But unless there is an extremely clear licencing statement that the image is freely available for both non-commercial and commercial re-use, then you absolutely must not attempt to upload it for use in a Wikipedia article. Ignore the fact that Google doesn't tell you there's a problem. Be pro-active and look for a clear 'Creative Commons' licence statement. If there isn't one, the image cannot be used. Thanks for the url, Pilot03. No, I'm afraid you cannot use that image. Just click on Google's 'usage rights' filter link, and select 'Labeled for reuse'. Had the image been licensed for commercial use under a Creative Commons licence, then the image would still have shown on the page. It's clearly not licenced that way, so you may not use it here. There is an account named User:Benjaminzyg, but it has been indefinitely blocked per Wikipedia:Sockpuppetry#Inappropriate uses of alternative accounts and Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Jenulot/Archive. If you are the same person as this Benjaminzyg (and User:Jenulot), then you will need to make an unblock request for User:Jenulot via Wikipedia:Unblock Ticket Request System since talk page access has been removed for the Jenulot account. Before you make such a request though, I strongly suggest you carefully read through Wikipedia:Appealing a block because you're going to have to convince the person reviewing your request that (1) you understand why the Jenulot account has been blocked and (2) you have no intention of repeating the same mistakes ever again. You should also understand that it is really the person behind the account who has been blocked, not the account itself per se; so, every time you edit Wikipedia by creating a new account or even by using an IP address, you are considered to be evading the block, which these additional account will also be blocked as well. Hi University of sceince and culture. The first thing you're probably going to need to do is change your username because the one you're using now is not allowed per Wikipedia:Username policy#Promotional names. Then, the next thing you're going to need to do is carefully read through Wikipedia:Plain and simple conflict of interest guide and follow the guidelines listed there. Since you're an employee of the USC, you are considered by Wikipedia to have a Wikipedia:Conflict of interest with respect to anything written about it. Wikipedia doesn't expressly forbide conflict of interest editing, but it does highly discourage it because it can lead to some serious problems. So, please familiarize yourself with the aforementioned guide and only edit according to it. It's very important that you also follow Wikipedia:Paid contribution disclosure if it applies to you because your account can be blocked if you don't. @ForeverJustice: When leaving a new message, look to the right of an existing section title and click the "edit" button. Stop making a new section for every message.

ForeverJustice, you need to cite sources for the statements in the article; or at least, for some of the more significant or controversial ones. At present, most of them are not attributed to any source, but that statement that Foward was preceded in office Baines is cited to 36 sources, many of which do not mention Baines. FJ - You have already seen all this in comments above, but to recap: best to work on this in your Sandbox. It is not ready for prime time yet. Flipping it to Wikipedia prematurely could result in a deletion action. Your references are not in correct format. Per instructions, you add the ref information at end of sentences, between the < > and </ > and the program leaves a superscripted number in the text and puts the ref info in the ref section. Wikipedia is not for advertising your company or its services, even if they are relevant to Wikipedia. Companies only merit articles here if they have significant coverage in independent reliable sources that show that it meets the notability guidelines for companies written at WP:ORG. As you are here as a company representative, you will need to review and comply with the conflict of interest policy and the paid editing policy; the latter is required by Wikipedia's Terms of Use. It doesn't "become live" until somebody moves it to main article space. There are two ways that can happen:
  1. Any account with autoconfirmed status can move it directly. They should not do so unless they are confident it is of good enough quality to be a live article.
  2. Anybody may submit it for review: when a reviewing editor accepts it, they will move it to main space. If it was created using the article wizard or articles for creation process, then there should be a big button saying something like "Submit this article for review". If not, submit it by editing it and adding {{subst:submit}} (with the double curly brackets) at the top. --ColinFine (talk) 12:34, 26 December 2018 (UTC)
