Wikiproject Tyrol

Hello, who is interested in setting up a Wikiproject Tyrol as a subproject of WikiProject Austria? The scope of the Wikiproject Tyrol would include the whole of the historical region of Tyrol, that is the modern Euroregion Tirol-Südtirol/Alto Adige-Trentino:

• the Austrian State of Tyrol
• the Italian province of South Tyrol
• the Italian province of Trentino

This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. Truce term

Hi. I'm writing an article on truce terms and would like to know what Austrian children use. Truce terms are words used by children, usually under the age of about 11, to call a temporary halt or respite to the game to do something like tie a shoelace or discuss the rules or take off a jacket. GA Sweeps invitation

This message is being sent to WikiProjects with GAs under their scope. Since August 2007, WikiProject Good Articles has been participating in GA sweeps. The process helps to ensure that articles that have passed a nomination before that date meet the GA criteria. After nearly two years, the running total has just passed the 50% mark. In order to expediate the reviewing, several changes have been made to the process. A new worklist has been created, detailing which articles are left to review. Instead of reviewing by topic, editors can consider picking and choosing whichever articles they are interested in.

We are always looking for new members to assist with reviewing the remaining articles, and since this project has GAs under its scope, it would be beneficial if any of its members could review a few articles (perhaps your project's articles). Your project's members are likely to be more knowledgeable about your topic GAs then an outside reviewer. As a result, reviewing your project's articles would improve the quality of the review in ensuring that the article meets your project's concerns on sourcing, content, and guidelines. However, members can also review any other article in the worklist to ensure it meets the GA criteria.

If any members are interested, please visit the GA sweeps page for further details and instructions in initiating a review. If you'd like to join the process, please add your name to the running total page. In addition, for every member that reviews 100 articles from the worklist or has a significant impact on the process, s/he will get an award when they reach that threshold. The first theatre and the first actors

Hello! I am interested in theatre history, and I hope some one can answer my question. I wonder: which was the first permanent theatre, with proffesional actors of both genders, in Austria? I am also interested in the first known actor and actress, or the most famous actor and actress, of that theatre's early years. I hope someone can answer my question. Schloss Eggenberg (Graz)

Strange....

Is anyone else as confused as I am with the seperation of "Habsburg Monarchy", "Austrian Empire" and "Austria-Hungary" into seperate articles? Considering that there was no dramatic structural change with the coming of the "Austrian Empire" over the "Monarchy", should the two be addressed seperately? And indeed, it is possible to view "Austria-Hungary" in the context of the re-emergence of the Kingdom of the Crown of St.Stephen in the "Monarchy"'s pre-Josephinist's constitutional structure. I personally would prefer "Austria-Hungary" be redirected to "Habsburg Monarchy", as this is a relatively nuetral term that describes all three "eras".... Nicaea (talk) 07:49, 2 December 2009 (UTC)

Districts

I came to Category:Districts of Austria via Talk:District#Article naming. Per WP:DUPCAT I cleaned Category:Districts of Austria from articles about individual districts.

Categories for individual districts are named X District, e.g. Category:Oberwart District. District articles are named X (district), e.g. Oberwart (district).

The common format for district article names is X District. Any reason why Austria does not (yet) use X District format for the articles itself?

I think it would be good to name them like it is done for the other countries and also for the categories. If articles are named like the categories, Template:Catmain can be added to the categories and will link to the corresponding article.

Question

I have a question about the Category:Germanophone Italians. Don't you think it would be more logical to rename this category to Category:South Tyroleans? German Wikipedia and several other ones have already de:Kategorie:Person (Südtirol). The current category name is just weird and contains de facto only South Tyroleans. Yes, that can be right, although all citizens of South Tyrol (German or Italian-speaking) have the obligation to learn the other language at the elementary and secondary school. So basically all South Tyroleans are bilingual. - Darwinek (talk) 20:34, 17 May 2011 (UTC)

Definition of town and city

I notice there is a degree of confusion about whether to translate Stadt as "city" or "town" because it can mean either. Because the official definition of Großstadt in Germany is a Stadt with a population of 100,000 or more; we have used this on the German WikiProject as the guide. So Städte with less than 100,000 people are called "towns" and above that "cities". We could adopt the same convention for WikiProject Austria too which would provide a degree of consistency. Should we call the language German or "Austrian"

An editor at Myrrha has decided that a scientific reference (number 66) to a Vienese journal should be listed as in the Austrian language. (He's now amended and calling it Austrian German.) The open archive lists the language as "German" and I have never heard people over in Austria there say that they are speaking "Austrian" as a language. Just as in the US, we say we speak English, even though it's obviously American English. What do you all think of this? TCO (talk) 00:36, 17 February 2011 (UTC)

The Austrians speak, read and write German, but most speak it using an Austro-Bavarian dialect. They sometimes refer to it as Austrian German or even Bavarian or Alemannian to distinguish it from High German. I don't know the journal you're referring to but I would say it would be very odd to refer to it as Austrian, Austro-Bavarian, etc., unless it was a cultural publication specifically oriented towards the Austrian dialect. --Bermicourt (talk) 07:05, 17 February 2011 (UTC)

It's a translation by a new editor of this article on de.wikipedia, which has been in existence for several years. Both articles are unreferenced. de.wikipedia is a bit more laissez faire than en.wikipedia about unreferenced articles, which would explain the lack of referencing in the de.wikipedia article. I agree that someone should reference the en.wikipedia article. Why don't you add some English language referencing, and then I'll look for some German language referencing as well?

On the issue of notability, it seems that Marillenschnaps is an Austrian form of apricot schnaps, with a slightly different name from German apricot schnaps. I therefore suspect that it's about as notable as Irish whiskey is by comparison with Scotch whisky, ie notable enough. I have added an interwikilink to the article, and created a talk page with suitable tags. BTW, the same new editor has also created Marillenknödel, which is a translation of this article, also in de.wikipedia. Bahnfrend (talk) 12:30, 4 August 2011 (UTC)

Template:StatistikAustria

Hi. I've created the above template from the German Wiki version. It provides an automatic external link to the municipal data about an Austria city, town or village at the Statistik Austria site. This seems to be an important official source of info and is heavily used on de.wiki. For examples of use, see Graz, Wörgl or Vorderwaldberg. It would be useful if, over time, editors could copy the template data (which comes with a town-specific code, e.g. {{StatistikAustria|21202}} ) from German Wiki articles to their English Wiki equivalents. --Bermicourt (talk) 19:35, 12 January 2011 (UTC)

Austria population templates - September 2011

I have adapted the Austria-population templates to later "automatically" set the current population of 2,475 Austrian towns and districts, as interwiki templates from German Wikipedia:

• Category:Austria subdivision population templates - 9 templates for population of 2,475 towns or districts in Austria.

Those 9 Austria-population templates need to be connected to the Austria town infoboxes, to set the current population from inside those template lists of population counts. As you may know, in April 2010, the Germany-population templates were likewise adapted from German Wikipedia, and connected to Germany-town infoboxes, so each year, the town populations can be copied from German WP (in 16 Germany population templates) and update thousands of town articles for Germany. The template-format for Austria is the same as for Germany, but allows the word "date" to get the statistics as-of date. For example, for Vienna:

• Population of Vienna: {{Metadata population AT-9|9}} = 1899055
• Population of Favoriten: {{Metadata population AT-9|910}} = 194820

Each year the current population counts can be copied exactly from the 9 Austria interwiki templates on German Wikipedia (or updated from website Statistik Austria), and then those counts would "instantly" appear in the ~2,475 Austria town/district articles. The inhabitant counts can also be extracted to appear in population bargraphs, such as used in the 23 district articles of Vienna. The counts could be used later in live calculations, such as relative size of the Margareten-District population divided by Vienna, as a whole:

• Relative size of Margareten in Vienna: {{#expr: 54940 / 1899055 * 100}}% = 2.9%
• Relative size of Favoriten in Vienna: {{#expr: 194820 / 1899055 * 100}}% = 10.3%

District titles

I know this has been mentioned before, but we still have German and Austrian Kreise articles and their categories variously named "FOO (district)", "FOO district" and "FOO District". Since, in German, the "FOO" and "District" are variably used inseparably as a proper name (not least to distinguish them from the actual town e.g. "Kreis Celle" and "Celle"), my suggestion is we settle on "FOO District" for consistency and accuracy. Hello Austrian friends. I'm trying to prepare an article for Did You Know's Christmas article set. Krampus was a stub, so I'm starting a little (hopefully 5X) expansion. Posting here to ask for more eyes on the new material: I wasn't aware of Krampus until two weeks ago, so I'm working from scratch on this topic. Any fact-checking/revisions would be appreciated. I'm also working with only English sources, which are a bit thin. In the spirit of season, I humbly request some help with some good German references, or pointers in the right direction, and ideas for expansion. An experienced insight is required at Talk:Eurovision Song Contest 2012

Greetings fellow Wikipedians and project members from WP:AUT. There is a lengthy discussion taking place at Talk:Eurovision_Song_Contest_2012#Austria_language_choice regarding a language grey area for the Austrian entry at Eurovision Song Contest 2012. Official sources at the European Broadcasting Union list the language as being a dialect of the Mühlviertel region. However, there is nothing specific to detail what the name of this dialect is, for the sake of linking it on the article itself. Some users seem to thing it is German, while others think it is Styrian, or Bavarian. Personally I think it would be classified as Austro-Bavarian, as this is a dialect used in the Upper Austria region, to which Mühlviertel is a part of. Population template issues

There seems to be a problem with one or more metadata templates that display population in Austria town and village infoboxes e.g. Template:Metadata population AT-6; the problem can be seen, for example, at Zeltweg. There is another issue e.g. at Mürzzuschlag. Can someone look at this; I don't have the expertise to sort it out. --Bermicourt (talk) 20:28, 22 February 2013 (UTC)

At first sight it seems to be mostly (but not all) of the towns in Murtal, so I guess what's happened is that a code has got changed somewhere to reflect the new district. There's a secondary problem which I've only started to scratch - the error was making the articles members of the non-existent Category:Template_Metadata_population_error rather than what I assume was the intention, Category:Template:Metadata Population/Error. Now it seems that latter category is intended only for errors in German infoboxes but {{Infobox Town AT}} reuses some of the same code, and it's not an ideal category name with that hyphen in it. I changed {{Metadata population AT-1}} and {{Metadata population AT-6}} to use the latter category before realising that it was starting to look complicated, so I thought I'd better stop and consult with you guys, I was just passing through during a review of all the red-linked categories, during which the former category came up.Le Deluge (talk) 18:59, 5 March 2013 (UTC)

I have just translated a short article on Austrian Literature Online (ALO), but perhaps more usefully the related Template:ALO which allows automatic linking to documents at ALO. I've left the parameters in German in order that references/links that come across from de.wiki are automatically handled every time. It's a railway station announcement, in German followed by English, of the arrival and foreshadowed departure of the train EC 41 Lehár to Budapest at platform 8 of the station concerned (Wien Westbahnhof, perhaps (?)). I believe that it's a re-recording of a recorded announcement over which the ÖBB holds copyright. However, it is placed in the German language article de:Österreichische Bundesbahnen to accompany a properly referenced comment to the effect that for 30 years the actress de:Chris Lohner has recorded the majority of the ÖBB's recorded announcements (actually, she's been doing it for longer than that; she featured in the "Changing Trains" episode of Great Railway Journeys of the World, which was shot in 1980). There's another (different) clip (this time an onboard announcement) included in the de:Chris Lohner article. As the identity of such an announcer is a fact worthy of inclusion in an encyclopedia, and as each of the clips is a short one accompanying a referenced comment, I believe that both clips can be published in English Wikipedia under the "fair use" exception, but I wouldn't support uploading them to commons. Incidentally, Chris Lohner's recorded voice may also have featured in Before Sunrise, part of which was shot aboard an Austrian train - I'll have to watch it again to find out. German/Austrian station naming

There has been an issue raging for some time over the naming of German and Austrian central or main stations aka Hauptbahnhöfe. Essentially the debate is over whether we use the English name "Foo Central Station" or leave the article title in German i.e. Foo Hauptbahnhof. The truth is there are arguments both ways, but the debate has polarized opinion and is leading to inconsistency as we change titles based on our own perspectives. I will try to summarize the essentials in an objective a way as possible:

• Many English sources use Foo Hauptbahnhof alone
• Many English sources use Foo Hauptbahnhof and an English translation – either may be in brackets
• Many English sources use "Foo Central Station".
• Quite a number of English sources use "Foo Main Station", for certain stations this is even the most common name used.
• The national railways of Germany and Austria use "Foo Central Station" and Foo Hauptbahnhof (and sometimes both) in English publications and web pages
• Depending on which side of the debate editors lie, "Foo central station" and "Foo main station" may or may not be counted. Those "against" argue these are descriptive, those "for" argue they are proper names.
• Leading and specialist dictionaries recognise that Hauptbahnhof can mean "central station" or "main station". Some editors vehemently oppose the former term (see Talk:Central station).
• There is confusion because "central station" could mean geographically central to the city or operationally central to the railway network.
• In reality the most common name in English sources varies from station to station. It may be Foo Hauptbahnhof "Foo Central Station" or "Foo Main Station".
• For some stations there are few English sources.
• For others, especially the big stations, there are thousands of online English sources.
• There have been at least 4 heated discussions on talk pages to change names. Of these 3 have supported "Foo Central Station" (Nuremberg, Leipzig and Berlin I).
• Following the latest debate, Berlin Central Station was moved to Berlin Hauptbahnhof. There is a proposal to do a mass move back to Foo Hauptbahnhof, possibly following a short RM discussion based on the top few.
• Meanwhile sporadic moves continue.
• Current Wiki practice for ordinary stations is to translate Bahnhof Foo as "Foo station" or "Foo railway station"

I’m not aiming to spark yet another argument over the merits of the different names or to debate the above, which is only intended to indicate the complexities and the need to do some research before forming an opinion. I am really seeking views on the best way forward.

The whole subject is crying out for a proper review of English-language sources. I feel that is best led by WP:WikiProject Trains, with the support of WP:WikiProject Germany and WP:WikiProject Austria. It may also make sense to avoid wasting everyone’s time, that no more moves take place until this is sorted out. Ultimately I don’t mind which way this goes as long as it is based on sources not POV, that there is some consistency amongst articles and that article text recognizes all significant usage, both English and German usage. Popular pages tool update

As of January, the popular pages tool has moved from the Toolserver to Wikimedia Tool Labs. The code has changed significantly from the Toolserver version, but users should notice few differences. Please take a moment to look over your project's list for any anomalies, such as pages that you expect to see that are missing or pages that seem to have more views than expected. Note that unlike other tools, this tool aggregates all views from redirects, which means it will typically have higher numbers. (For January 2014 specifically, 35 hours of data is missing from the WMF data, which was approximated from other dates. For most articles, this should yield a more accurate number. However, a few articles, like ones featured on the Main Page, may be off).

Web tools, to replace the ones at tools:~alexz/pop, will become available over the next few weeks at toollabs:popularpages. All of the historical data (back to July 2009 for some projects) has been copied over. The tool to view historical data is currently partially available (assessment data and a few projects may not be available at the moment). The tool to add new projects to the bot's list is also available now (editing the configuration of current projects coming soon). Unlike the previous tool, all changes will be effective immediately. OAuth is used to authenticate users, allowing only regular users to make changes to prevent abuse. A visible history of configuration additions and changes is coming soon. Once tools become fully available, their toolserver versions will redirect to Labs.

I think that "lang-de-AT" is useless, as it is used by only Austrian Empire. Someone reverted the edits I made to make things simple. Problems with "Gemeindekennziffer"?

Hello, greetings from WP:WikiProject Germany. Seems like some new "Gemeindekennziffern" in Styria, Austria are no longer supported or have been changed: see Category:Template:Metadata_Population/Error. Looks like the metadata for those towns is outdated and/or transmitted incorrectly - but I have little knowledge about templates and zero knowledge about metadata. Found one error, if any template editor wants to fix it. The sub-template Template:Get Austria location code still has the old name <-> key relations from 2013 hardcoded and needs to be updated in sync with the other lists (f.e. in Template:Metadata population AT-6). Alternatively the correct "Gemeindekennziffer" can be set as infobox parameter, but the parameter is "key = ", not "Gemeindekennziffer = ". See Allerheiligen im Mürztal, where i added this value as fix. (In this case area, population, and "date as of" should not be added manually) GermanJoe (talk) 17:49, 27 October 2014 (UTC)

German speaker needed at Stiftskeller St. Peter ("oldest restaurant in Europe", 803 AD)

A German speaker is needed at the article for Stiftskeller St. Peter (an Austrian restaurant), which is claimed to be oldest restaurant in Europe, dating at least to 803 AD, the time of Charlemagne and Alcuin, according to a claim on the restaurant website. The English article lacked any citation beyond the website, so another editor rewrote the article a few days ago to reflect more skepticism. I noticed that the German article on the same restaurant linked to a Google Book citation in German that did seem to mention the restaurant as well as Alcuin (Alkuin). I added the citation to the English version of the article. But since I don't read German, I have no idea what the Google book citation is really saying, and whether it should be regarded as a reliable source that fully backs up the claim that Alkuin mentioned the restaurant. Updated Austria populations & Styria structural reform

I have updated ~2,500 Austria town populations for 2016-01-01, with the auto-population templates (Template:Metadata_population_AT-1 to ...AT-9). However, the massive re-districting of the 542 Styria (state) towns, in 2015, needs to be noted among those pages, plus I think 36 new towns in Styria, of the remaining 287 towns after the merger. I have begun translation of the German WP page "de:Steiermärkische Gemeindestrukturreform" as English page "Styria municipal structural reform" (can be renamed later).

The dissolved 255 town pages need to have infobox population set as "Einwohner=nnnn" (no commas) with "Stand = 2014-01-01" (as 2014 data), and also add infobox "key = -mmmmm" as a negative town code to no longer hunt recent population data for each defunct old town. This is a massive change, as all 255 former municipalities must be updated, but the German WP equivalent pages contain such relevant text +sources as some help. -Wikid77 (talk) 15:50, 3 November 2016 (UTC)

I may have accidentally messed up the project page

When I came to the WikiProject Austria page today, I found that everything was grouped with the sidebar for some reason. I checked the edit history, and the last edit was the edit in which I added the tab header to ease navigation. The tab header was working fine when I first added it yesterday, but now, it seems to have moved the whole page into the sidebar. What happened?

Austrian expressways (Schnellstraßen)

As I was going through the articles on motorways in Austria, I noticed that there were no articles on the expressways (Schnellstraßen) of Austria. In Austria, Schnellstraßen are limited-access roads that are similar to Autobahns, but are built to account for topography. Despite this, German Wikipedia has articles on these roads.

I am willing to translate these articles from German to English, but I have a question about the title of the articles. Should I title them by the designation of the road (ex. S1 expressway (Austria)) or by the alternate name of the road (ex. Wiener Außenring Schnellstraße), as is done by the Autobahns?

I found that the S10 expressway has an article already, and it is called an expressway there. It is referred to by its alternate name there, so that s what I will title the articles by.

WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

Can someone expand on the hacking incidents targeting websites of Austrian political parties that involve My Little Pony characters right here? I feel that there's more than the incident that targeted SPÖ in 2011 and one targeted WKR in 2012. We need more than the two Kurier reports that we already cited. Help with editing The Austrian Green Party

Hi, I’m looking for some help with editing The Greens – The Green Alternative. A lot of the information badly needs updating and improving. For my part, I worked through some grammar cleanup. One sentence stood out to me from the Vorarlberg section: “The charismatic alpine farmer Kaspanaze Simma from Bregenzerwald was the leading candidate, it was mainly due to his efforts why the party was so instantly successful.”

Who’s to say how charismatic he is if at all? And how much it was due to his efforts? The references at the end are not being used to support any of such claims and the detail throughout the article. I’m fairly new here on Wikipedia editing so not too sure where to go but I hope someone (if you are more connected with the subject and/or speak German) can help me here? User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Project-independent quality assessments

Quality assessments are used by Wikipedia editors to rate the quality of articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project decides to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. Siege of Vienna: continuous vandalism by many possible sockpuppets

Hi, there are many strange same edits by several new users, all of them relating Ottoman battles, decceasing the Ottoman losses, increasing the Christian losses, and denying the Christian victories, he pretend the Ottoman defeats were just a (friendly visits) trips then they went home (even at the Siege of Belgrade 1465 the user wants to show an Ottoman victory) : Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Keremmaarda

Siege of Vienna 1529, massive edit war activity, he always removes the "Austrian victory" he pretend the Ottoman retreat was not an Austrian victory: [2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14]

I think Ottoman retreat after 2 weeks of siege = Austrian victory. Simple 2+2=4

Women in Green's 5th Edit-a-thon

Hello WikiProject Austria:

WikiProject Women in Green is holding a month-long Good Article Edit-a-thon event in October 2023!

Running from October 1 to 31, 2023, WikiProject Women in Green (WiG) is hosting a Good Article (GA) edit-a-thon event with the theme Around the World in 31 Days! All experience levels welcome. Never worked on a GA project before? We'll teach you how to get started. Or maybe you're an old hand at GAs – we'd love to have you involved! Participants are invited to work on nominating and/or reviewing GA submissions related to women and women's works (e.g., books, films) during the event period. We hope to collectively cover article subjects from at least 31 countries (or broader international articles) by month's end. GA resources and one-on-one support will be provided by experienced GA editors, and participants will have the opportunity to earn a special WiG barnstar for their efforts.
