Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

  • The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
  • The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
  • A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. This scheme should allow the team to start producing offline selections for your project and the wider community within the next year. Thanks for using the Wikipedia 1.0 scheme! Cities and Towns

I have run through once over this Category and added all articles under this project. Also added Geography section and maps wherever found. Will hit more categories related to Jammu and Kashmir soon. --GDibyendu (talk) 16:44, 29 July 2008 (UTC)

Scope of project?

Is the intent to focus on the post 1947 Jammu and Kashmir or to include the Princely state period too? I have been shifting back and forth between the periods and among the articles and find alot of both overlap and confusion, particularly with respect to the military conflict articles. If the idea is to cover the princely state period, too, then that leads to the need to cover a bigger geographic area and suggests the need for a joint Indo/Pak project for this area - an impossibility? At any rate, let me know your thoughts about the scope so I can determine when to bring things to this project's attention.Vontrotta (talk) 11:52, 11 September 2008 (UTC)

Wikipedia 0.7 articles have been selected for Jammu and Kashmir

Wikipedia 0.7 is a collection of English Wikipedia articles due to be released on DVD, and available for free download, later this year. The Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team has made an automated selection of articles for Version 0.7.

We would like to ask you to review the articles selected from this project. These were chosen from the articles with this project's talk page tag, based on the rated importance and quality. If there are any specific articles that should be removed, please let us know at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.7. You can also nominate additional articles for release, following the procedure at Wikipedia:Release Version Nominations.

A list of selected articles with cleanup tags, sorted by project, is available. The list is automatically updated each hour when it is loaded. Please try to fix any urgent problems in the selected articles. A team of copyeditors has agreed to help with copyediting requests, although you should try to fix simple issues on your own if possible.

We would also appreciate your help in identifying the version of each article that you think we should use, to help avoid vandalism or POV issues. These versions can be recorded at this project's subpage of User:SelectionBot/0.7. We are planning to release the selection for the holiday season, so we ask you to select the revisions before October 20. At that time, we will use an automatic process to identify which version of each article to release, if no version has been manually selected. Thanks! Coordinators' working group

Hi! I'd like to draw your attention to the new WikiProject coordinators' working group, an effort to bring both official and unofficial WikiProject coordinators together so that the projects can more easily develop consensus and collaborate. This group has been created after discussion regarding possible changes to the A-Class review system, and that may be one of the first things discussed by interested coordinators.

All designated project coordinators are invited to join this working group. If your project hasn't formally designated any editors as coordinators, but you are someone who regularly deals with coordination tasks in the project, please feel free to join as well. — Delievered by §hepBot (Disable) on behalf of the WikiProject coordinators' working group at 05:44, 28 February 2009 (UTC)

Featured Article Review - Ladakh

I have nominated Ladakh for a featured article review here. Please join the discussion on whether this article meets featured article criteria. Articles are typically reviewed for two weeks. If substantial concerns are not addressed during the review period, the article will be moved to the Featured Article Removal Candidates list for a further period, where editors may declare "Keep" or "Remove" the article's featured status. The instructions for the review process are here. AshLin (talk) 10:13, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

WP 1.0 bot announcement

This message is being sent to each WikiProject that participates in the WP 1.0 assessment system. On Saturday, January 23, 2010, the WP 1.0 bot will be upgraded. Your project does not need to take any action, but the appearance of your project's summary table will change. The upgrade will make many new, optional features available to all WikiProjects. Additional information is available at the WP 1.0 project homepage. — Carl (CBM · talk) 03:28, 22 January 2010 (UTC)

Unreferenced living people articles bot

User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects provides a list, updated daily, of unreferenced living people articles (BLPs) related to your project. There has been a lot of discussion recently about deleting these unreferenced articles, so it is important that these articles are referenced.

The unreferenced articles related to your project can be found at >>>Wikipedia:WikiProject Jammu and Kashmir/Archive 35/Unreferenced BLPs<<<

Jammu and Kashmir articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Jammu and Kashmir articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.

We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

WikiProject cleanup listing

I have created together with Smallman12q a toolserver tool that shows a weekly-updated list of cleanup categories for WikiProjects, that can be used as a replacement for WolterBot and this WikiProject is among those that are already included (because it is a member of Category:WolterBot cleanup listing subscriptions). See the tool's wiki page, this project's listing in one big table or by categories and the index of WikiProjects. Svick (talk) 21:21, 7 November 2010 (UTC)

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

WikiProject X is live!

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

"Wuddar/Karewa" article needs to be created...

An article on the geological features ubiquitous in the Valley of Kashmir, the 'Wuddars' or 'Karewas', is sorely needed. The term Karewa is already used in a number of other articles already(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pulwama , https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ompora , https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burzahom_archaeological_site etc.) and can be used for many more(Srinagar airport complex is situated on the Damodar karewa/wuddar, Kashmiri saffron is grown mainly on eroded wuddars/karewas which have free draining clay-calcerous soils, etc.) A few starting points: http://www.currentscience.ac.in/Volumes/100/06/0805.pdf http://www.ikashmir.net/geography/doc/geography.pdf https://archive.org/details/valleyofkashmir00lawruoft Page 45-50 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A02:C7D:367D:D00:79DA:28CF:5436:9BFA (talk) 07:06, 17 December 2017 (UTC)

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:24, 27 October 2019 (UTC)

Treaties on Kashmir

Various scholars have written on the Instrument of Accession (Jammu and Kashmir), The Treaty of Lahore (9 March 1846) and the Treaty of Amritsar (16 March 1846). But very little of that text is on wikipedia.

Maharaja gulab Singh originally worked for the Sikh Empire. But then betrayed the Sikh empire by siding with the East India Company in the Anglo-Sikh War. His name is mentioned in the treaty of Lahore too. He collected Taxes for the East India Company and the money was then given by him to the East India Company.

The Treaty of Lahore (9 March 1846) and the Treaty of Amritsar (16 March 1846) lapsed under Article 7 of the Independence Act 1947. The Act was passed by the British Parliament on July 18, 1947 to assent to the creation of the independent states of India and Pakistan. The aforementioned Article 7 provides that, with the lapse of His Majesty’s suzerainty over the Indian states, all treaties, agreements, obligations, grants, usages and sufferance’s will lapse.

The 7 year old Maharaja Duleep Singh Bahadur (Sikh) was under the control of the East India company when he sign The Treaty of Lahore on 9 March 1846 which gave Jammu and Kashmir and its people to the East India Company.

Under the British legal system and international law a treaty signed by the 7 year old Maharaja Duleep Singh Bahadur and under duress is not valid. (The International Court of Justice has stated that there "can be little doubt, as is implied in the Charter of the United Nations and recognized in Article 52 of the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties, that under contemporary international law an agreement concluded under the threat or use of force is void.)

We may need to add a section on the impact on the removal of Article 370 of the Indian constitution on The Instrument of Accession too. None of this text is on there.

Various scholars have written on these treaties, for example Alistair Lamb disputed the validity of the Instrument of Accession in his paper Myth of Indian Claim to JAMMU & KASHMIR –– A REAPPRAISAL'

Where he writes "While the date, and perhaps even the fact, of the accession to India of the State of Jammu & Kashmir in late October 1947 can be questioned, there is no dispute at that time any such accession was presented to the world at large as conditional and provisional. It was not communicated to Pakistan at the outset of the overt Indian intervention in the State of Jammu & Kashmir, nor was it presented in facsimile to the United Nations in early 1948 as part of the initial Indian reference to the Security Council. The 1948 White Paper in which the Government of India set out its formal case in respect to the State of Jammu & Kashmir, does not contain the Instrument of Accession as claimed to have been signed by the Maharajah: instead, it reproduces an unsigned form of Accession such as, it is implied, the Maharajah might have signed. To date no satisfactory original of this Instrument as signed by the Maharajah has been produced: though a highly suspect version, complete with the false date 26 October 1947, has been circulated by the Indian side since the 1960s. On the present evidence it is by no means clear that the Maharaja ever did sign an Instrument of Accession.

Indian troops actually began overtly to intervene in the State’s affairs on the morning of 27 October 1947

It is now absolutely clear that the two documents (a) the Instrument of Accession, and (c) the letter to Lord Mountbatten, could not possibly have been signed by the Maharajah of Jammu & Kashmir on 26 October 1947. The earliest possible time and date for their signature would have to be the afternoon of 27 October 1947. During 26 October 1947 the Maharajah of Jammu & Kashmir was travelling by road from Srinagar to Jammu. (The Kashmir State Army divisions and the Kashmiri people had already turned on him and he was on the run and had no authority in the state). His new Prime Minister, M.C. Mahajan, who was negotiating with the Government of India, and the senior Indian official concerned in State matters, V.P. Menon, were still in New Delhi where they remained overnight, and where their presence was noted by many observers. There was no communication of any sort between New Delhi and the travelling Maharajah. Menon and Mahajan set out by air from New Delhi to Jammu at about 10.00 a.m. on 27 October; and the Maharajah learned from them for the first time the result of his Prime Minister’s negotiations in New Delhi in the early afternoon of that day. The key point, of course, as has already been noted above, is that it is now obvious that these documents could only have been signed after the overt Indian intervention in the State of Jammu & Kashmir on 27 October 1947. When the Indian troops arrived at Srinagar air field, that State was still independent. Any agreements favourable to India signed after such intervention cannot escape the charge of having been produced under duress. (The International Court of Justice has stated that there "can be little doubt, as is implied in the Charter of the United Nations and recognized in Article 52 of the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties, that under contemporary international law an agreement concluded under the threat or use of force is void.)"

Additionally Maharaja was on the run. The prevailing international practice on the recognition of state governments is based on the following three factors: first, the government’s actual control of the territory; second, the government’s enjoyment of the support and obedience of the majority of the population; third, the government’s ability to stake the claim that it has a reasonable expectation of staying in power. The situation on the ground demonstrates that the Maharaja was not in control of the state of Jammu and Kashmir and was fleeing for his life and almost all of Kashmir was under the control of the Kashmiri people and the Kashmiri Army that had rebelled against him. His own troops had turned on him. With regard to the Maharaja’s control over the local population, it is clear that he enjoyed no such control or support. The people of Kashmir had been sold by the East India Company and he charged them high taxes thetefore the Kashmir Muslims, Hindus Pandits and Buddhists hated him. Furthermore, the state’s armed forces were in total disarray after most of the men turned against him and he was running for his life. Finally, it is highly doubtful that the Maharaja could claim that his government had a reasonable chance of staying in power without Indian military intervention. This assumption is substantiated by the Maharaja’s letters.

Many of these treaties apply to Jammu and Kashmir. The Kashmir conflict is already on Wikipedia. It is internationally recognized as a disputed territory under various United United Nations resolutions that are already listed on Wikipedia Nations Security Council Resolution 47, Nations Security Council Resolution 39,mediation of the Kashmir dispute, Nations Commission for India and Pakistan. There is a lot of documentation on Jammu and Kashmir in the UN archives already. If you look at the page Kashmir conflict, it already contains sections on the "Indian view", "Pakistani view", "Chinese view", "Kashmiri views". May be we could do something like that with these treaty pages. The Treaty of Lahore was signed in 9 March 1846 and the Treaty of Amritsar 16 March 1846. They predate the creation of both modern day India and Pakistan. The Treaty of Lahore was signed between the Sikh Empire and the British government. It is an international treaty and comes under international law. Johnleeds1 (talk) 11:36, 19 May 2020 (UTC)

@User:Johnleeds1 few points which highlight various flaws and policy violations in the the text you have put up for discussion-

  • your very arguement that the Treaty of Amritsar which was signed in '1846' stands void according to the Vienna Convention signed more than 100 years after in 1969 [1] is factually inaccurate. India is not even party to the convention.
  • The content you have presented is completely based on a single source(mostly unreferenced) the very title of which sounds 'biased'. Please go through WP:RS first
  • The paragraph where you mention that 'Maharaja was on run' completely ignored the fact that the valley was attacked by pakistan backed pakhtoon tribals in order to destabilise the valley [2] and they were not Kashmiri armies as you very cunningly portrayed.
  • Your supposed 'allegation' that Kashmiris were sold by the East India Company is a mere opinion of yours and in violation of WP:NPOV WP:FRINGE WP:WEIGHT without any proper reference
  • Wikipedia is an "Encyclopedia"WP:ENC it's not a blog where you can freely express your opinions. Please go through WP:GUIDELINE and then re access your content. I hope you will take all this in WP:GF AnM2002 (talk) 14:54, 19 May 2020 (UTC)

Naming Kashmiri Villages

Hello Wikipedians, I recently came across some village related articles like Akura, Jammu and Kashmir, Nowgam, Anantnag, Rohu, Jammu and Kashmir and many more. What I noticed was the article are not named similarly. Some of them have district at there end and some of them are followed by State/Union territory name. Let us discuss about it, so that all articles have a consistent name. Iflaq (talk) 11:41, 24 March 2021 (UTC)  :Iflaq, have you got any alternative other than these names. Do you want to name these villages as "villagename, Jammu and Kashmir"? –Hulgedtalk⟩ 13:38, 24 March 2021 (UTC)

Yes, villagename, Jammu and Kashmir sounds like a fine idea, except when more narrow disambiguation is necessary. -- Kautilya3 (talk) 15:46, 24 March 2021 (UTC)

:::Kautilya3, yes I agree. We'll name villages as "villagename, districtname" only when narrow disambiguation is needed. Iflaq do you have any objection? –Hulgedtalk⟩ 16:47, 24 March 2021 (UTC)

Hulged I don't have objection with either of the two naming styles, but villagename, districtname can be a better idea for all pages as we can specify the articles and all titles will be consistent in naming style. If we will use villagename, districtname only in case where narrow disambiguation is need it, the consistency of titles will still not be maintained. Iflaq (talk) 17:16, 24 March 2021 (UTC)
Kautilya3, I suggest we should name these articles as Village name followed by district eg. Lalchowk, Srinagar and Lalchowk, Anantnag keeping in view that there can be villages with same names in two different districts. A classical example is Lalchowk in Srinagar, Kashmir and Lalchowk in Anantnag, Kashmir. Iflaq (talk) 17:21, 24 March 2021 (UTC)

::::Iflaq, what if there exist two places in the same district. What would you name them? –Hulgedtalk⟩ 04:06, 25 March 2021 (UTC)

The chances to have two similar name villages in a district is low, than two similar name villages in Jammu and Kashmir. However if there are similar name villages in the district, I suggest we can name them according to the sub districts or tehsils. eg. Malpora, Devsar , Malpora, Qazigund. Iflaq (talk) 06:57, 25 March 2021 (UTC)
I think the idea of "village name, Jammu and Kashmir" except in cases requiring more narrow disambiguation is a very good one. It does a better job of immediately clarifying to a reader where the village is, since Jammu and Kashmir is a large and recognisable region. Where there are multiple places of the same name in different districts, we can treat them as exceptions, and use "village name, district name" (as with Lalchowk). Kohlrabi Pickle (talk) 09:33, 25 March 2021 (UTC)
@Kohlrabi Pickle Yeah "Villagename, Jammu and Kashmir" seems better than "Villagename, districtname" idea now. Thankyou for the comment. Iflaq (talk) 09:57, 25 March 2021 (UTC)
@Hulged @Kautilya3 @Kohlrabi Pickle Can we use this discussion as a general policy for naming articles in this wikiproject. Iflaq (talk) 10:03, 25 March 2021 (UTC)
I'm not sure, I'll defer to someone more experienced to answer. Kohlrabi Pickle (talk) 10:22, 25 March 2021 (UTC)

Yes, but let me state precisely what we are agreeing. If a place name needs to be disambiguated, it should be disambiguated by the state name ("Jammu and Kashmir" in our case) whenever possible, and by district name when that is not possible. This follows from the recognizability principle at WP:TITLE.

Note that I am not saying that all places in Jammu and Kashmir should have such page titles. That would be a consistency issue that would need consensus at WP:WikiProject India. (In fact, I suspect that you will get a pushback if start adding "Jammu and Kashmir" tag to existing page titles needlessly.) -- Kautilya3 (talk) 11:44, 25 March 2021 (UTC)
