Resurrected: Gaon Music Chart's chart search function + Billboard Korea K-pop Hot 100

Hi, for those users who work with South Korea's music articles, two late announcements. First, the easier of the two: Billboard Korea K-pop Hot 100. The charted resumed for the week dated May 29 – June 4, 2017 [1]. It's incredibly skeletal: it only provides its ranking for the week, so no peak position, weeks on the chart, etc.

Gaon has re-enabled its search function, which you can find here. This is great for discography articles, where you can utilize fewer sources for citing peak positions of songs and albums. A walk-through:

The search function presents seven headers: Digital Chart, Download Chart, Streaming Chart, BGM Chart, Mobile Chart (벨), Mobile Chart (링), and 노래방 Chart. To the left, three viewing options are available: 주간 (weekly), 월간 (monthly), and 연간 (year-end).

As an example, here's the search for CNBLUE. Chart type: Digital Chart; Classification: Overall; Year: 2013; Name: Singer's name; Search box: "씨엔블루". [2]. In reverse chronological order, it shows the Chart Period, Ranking, Title, Artist, Album, and Link to that week's chart.

Please remember to observe WP:CHARTMATH. The Download, Streaming, BGM Charts, as well as the Domestic and Foreign Charts should only be noted in cases when a song or album failed to chart on the Digital Chart or Overall chart.

Yes, as I've put it to use, I've noticed that it's just as bad, if not worse, than the one they had in place a few years ago. For now, I've simply manually altered the URL like so: http://www.gaonchart.co.kr/main/section/search/list.gaon?serviceGbn=&nationGbn=T&yyyy=2010&condition=2&search_str=씨엔블루 (simply change 씨엔블루 to your desired artist). This displays the act's entire charting history. The Chart Links will often link to the completely wrong week, but the peak positions do check out when I search for them. ℯxplicit 07:19, 5 December 2017 (UTC)

Sportswoman help request

I created articles for two South Korean skeleton athletes and corresponding wikidata entries. However, the only source I can find for these women is the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation's database, which is only in English and German, so I don't know whether their names have been properly represented or if any other information about them is available in Korean-language sources. I'd appreciate it if someone could take a look and bring these stubs up to your project's standards.

Include link to North Korea portal for NK articles in project banner

Could {{WikiProject Korea}} link to Portal:North Korea if the article is supported by the North Korea working group? See template sandbox mockup. It's the only working group that we have a portal for in Category:Korea-related portals.

NK and SK project pages are pretty much inactive, all of this stuff should redirect here - this is the only semi-active place discussing Korean topics on Eng Wiki. About the categories xxth-century Korean monarchy

It seems that the 20 Feb 2018 "article alert" about renaming the "xxth-century Korean monarchy" categories remained unnoticed. As a result, a "discussion" took place with one support (the proposer, User:Hugo999) and one passer-by User:Quuxplusone that mostly suggested a broader name like "Category:Nth-century Korean royalty" that might be less likely to drop articles out of the existing categories. (see Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2018 February 20 for the exact statements). Nevertheless, the closing was "rename".

After that, I had an exchange with the closing person, User:BrownHairedGirl, on my own talk page (see User_talk:Pldx1#Closed XfD discussions). I will not comment this exchange, everyone is able to draw her own conclusions. Nevertheless, the passage "their silence is assumed to be assent" is of interest. Do you assent that the Category:Nth-century Korean royalty (or any other name) were to be emptied and replaced by the narrower Category:Nth-century Korean monarchs ? Do you care or not about the strange "Korean monarchs" that can be encountered in the present categories ? Or are you rather with the opinion "let them play with categories" ? WP:DRV shows how to challenge an XfD close which anyone believes to be mistaken. Sadly, @Pldx1 seems to prefer sounding off rather than finding solutions., which is why I disengaged. Sadly, I am unsurprised to see that Pldx1 is now posting here rather than taking steps to solve the perceived problem.
In this case, if there are non-monarchs now in monarchs categories, the simplest solution is to move the non-monarchs to broader categories. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 13:35, 2 March 2018 (UTC)
To be honest, I haven't found any Reliable Source to assert explicitly that Lê Túc Tông was not a Korean monarch. Building a consensus before launching a Righteous Suppression Campaign could be better. Pldx1 (talk) 14:40, 2 March 2018 (UTC)

You mean that "Lê dynasty" is existed in Korean monarchy??? Be careful, "Lê" is absolutely not "Lee" (or "Yi", Joseon monarchs' first name). More, "Lee" in Korean is pronounced as "Lý" (not "Lê") in Vietnamese. And above all, Lê Túc Tông have a link to wiki page of Vietnamse official history book Đại Việt sử ký toàn thư (considered as an academic source). I think you can't read Vietnamese, or don't know anything about Vietnam's history or Vietnamese names. Otherwise, you have no "funny" comment like this, hahaha. Help with Korean nationality article

Any history buffs want to take on rewriting the Korean nationality article? I think the article is misleading, as it implies that Korean nationality is a thing that currently exists; in my opinion, this article should be about Korean nationality prior to 1945 (as in the historic country of Korea). The South Korean nationality law and Nationality Law of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea are where information about South Korean and North Korean nationality belong. Links to Kocowa

There are users using Template:KOCOWA in order to link to Kocowa pages for Korean TV shows, a streaming service. Is this something generally allowed? This would see to be against WP:ELNO - linking to service (even if free) and only works in specific countries (USA). We don't link to Netflix, Amazon Video, or even DramaFever this way. I have the same question with Evaders99. I have seen that user Jeongjiyoung (may be the IP 106.245.224.58) and user Yeheeyu added the Kocowa links on the pages of my watchlist and I have all reverted, but this user has also edited many other pages, so I can't continue to revert it manually, this takes lots of time. For me, this is a form of advertising which help the website to increase viewers as well as increase revenue, just like adding a Netflix link to a wiki page about a movie or a variety show. Well, Teahouse is probably better in general, because here we focus on more technical or reference desk like issues. No memory laws in South Korea?

IDK about China - but Special law to redeem pro-Japanese collaborators' property, ko:반민족행위처벌법 (failed attempt shortly after ROK establishment, around 1948-49), and so on. related navbox has related articles, except... full of Korean, as you can expect. — regards, Revi 15:37, 9 March 2018 (UTC)

Sijo

So this article was edited by a group of college editors. Here's how it looked before and now (diff). Quite frankly, the article as it is now is a mess. Everything that was added was mostly unsourced. The structure of the article is all over the place. The tone is more like an essay than an encyclopedia article. There are grammar mistakes throughout. Should the additions just be reverted? Is it possible for the article to be fixed by a knowledgeable editor with access to sources and some copyediting? I'd hate to throw away all the work these students did if it's good information and can still be salvaged, but in its current state it seems to be less useful than the shorter article that was there before. @Opencooper: For a moment I hoped it's a Korean edu ini, but IP traces it back to University Commons at Minneapolis. Not properly registered with WP:SUP and such. Shrug. I am not an expert on that field of Korean poetry, and I think they didn't remove old stuff, and it doesn't read like an essay to me, just - unreferenced. WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

A link to a DAB page

Korean shamanism mentions "The Isanmyo, a shrine built in 1925 dedicated to the four holy kings Dangun, Taejo, Sejong and Gojong" in a caption on a photograph. Three of the links are unambiguous; however, Taejo is a DAB page, and my knowledge of Korean history is as near to nil as makes no difference. Can any expert here help solve the problem? Yang Kyoungjong

The sourcing for the article is very poor though. Is it possible this is a hoax or an urban legend? I see sources online that tell the same story, but what if these sources are just repeating what other sources are saying? What is this story ultimately based upon though? When I first came to the article, it was largely based on a Daily Mail article, but that is a low quality source that has been deemed unreliable.

Martin Morgan in "The Americans on D-Day: A Photographic History of the Normandy Invasion" gives some overview of the issue. He mentions that the photo is real, but that the man is not identified in the original photo. It's only a theory emerging in the 1990's that the man is Yang Kyoungjong, and he speculates he is an unidentified man with a Georgian battallion. Link Harizotoh9 (talk) 23:12, 18 June 2018 (UTC)

If you have experience with {{lang}} tags and the like, could you look in at Wikipedia talk:Typo Team/moss Lang tags - where to get advice/approval, where I'm uncertain how to handle (code) three different versions of the same text: as transliterated hangul, in hangul, and in hanja. Help needed from someone who understands Korean

At Talk:TrueCrypt#Druking a new editor is making claims that are

  • [A] extremely implausible from a technical standpoint, and
  • [B] according to Google Translate, do not appear appear to be contained in the sources he cited.

Article on notable Korean figure declined.

I have recently been declined because according to the reviewer, my article "does not show that the subject qualifies for a Wikipedia article—that is, they do not show significant coverage (not just passing mentions) about the subject in published, reliable, secondary sources that are independent of the subject." However, my sources are coming directly from Korea's Ministry of Patriot's and Veteran's Affairs and reliable news periodicals (Sinhan Minbo/New Korea). One issue for readers may be that the older news periodicals uses old Korean which can be difficult to read by even Koreans. I feel that the reviewer was unable to carefully review my sources and thus declined it. Here is the link to my draft. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Song_Oh-kyun. I'm not familiar with the Sinhan Minbo, but according to the USC database, the newspaper was published by the Korean National Association, which Song seems to have been affiliated with — I assume that was the reviewer's objection. The source from the Ministry of Patriot's and Veteran's Affairs is good though. Perhaps you can also find an obituary or see what sources other articles related to the Korean independence movement cite? Good luck! Lenoresm (talk) 17:59, 7 August 2018 (UTC)
@Mlee965: This does look like something from my alley (history, notability). Unfortunately, I have to say I share the reviewers concerns. I cannot find a single English-language source about him (and my Korean is not good enough to look for other Korean sources). He doesn't appear to be a subject to any extensive coverage or analysis outside passing mentions and an obituary. Also, his biography does not suggest anything, well, raising to the point of being encyclopedic (general failure of WP:NBIO). Final red flag is no Korean Wikipedia article (generally Korean Wikipedia has lower notability standards than English, so if even it doesn't write about a Korean subject, it is not boding well). To prevent your article from being deleted (as happens to old drafts), you can copy it to your userspace. I am sorry to say, but Wikipedia may not be the right outlet to host his biography. Myself, I am not really interested in this topic, I am afraid (and TBH, I find reliability of music sources and notability issues to be so complex I stay away from those topic; through I am sure EXO is notable). But for the moment, we have to live with the fact that there are two legitimate authorities about the romanization of the Korean language. Namely the North Korean Government, and the South Korean Government. Everything else is only void agitation of people from the past, that are so proud of their own methods to decide from abroad on such matters... and so proud to slow down the standardization that would be required to facilitate automatized translations. Hi all, I know that the WikiProject has been fairly inactive. And I am not an organizer, but I wanted to let anyone that might be interested know about the above listed Deletion Nominations for three Portals, for Korea, North Korea and South Korea (see 3 last entries above)....where Discussions are currently taking place. I am not encouraging a vote, or canvassing, either way, just thought that many of you that contribute to Korean articles, may want to see the Discussions going on and/or Vote either way.

One of the contentions is that WikiProject Korea is inactive and has not been updating the Portals. Although we don't meet regularly here on the project page, and the page has been fairly inactive for a couple of years....I know that many editors are still creating and maintaining Korean related pages. And since the Portals are being criticized for not being kept up, also, maybe someone could help with their maintenance. My editing skills are limited and I don't quite understand the Portal process, but I know a lot of you are smarter than me.

I am pinging as many as I know of, for notification, as an extension to the above notifications, again not for any purposes of infuencing the votes either way. The main issue IMHO is that portals are useless since nobody visits them. So while they are harmless, any effort put towards maintaining them is wasted. Thanks for fast response Piotrus, yes I agree, they are outdated...but wondered why all the countries portals were not being put up for deletion, just these three? I didn't know where to find any discussion about the Portals, in general, and also, kind of hoped for some renewed activity on the WikiProject Korea page, although some of it's sub-projects are still active. Dear User:Bonnielou2013. I was not the one who put Portal:Korea under scrutiny. Once having starting my part of this review, I got convinced that the best thing to do with these three Korea's portals was to delete them as poor abandoned things. There are good articles, that have people to maintain them. Portals haven't. Some other countries' portals are also under a deletion process. But there is a strong reluctance to delete all the portals: indeed, the global result will probably be quite at random, with decent countries remaining burdened by non maintained portals. Hi PC78, I agree they should be merged and added the merge tags, suggesting the recent one be merged into the older one. Do you know how to start the discussion at the Talk:May 18th National Cemetery, I am not too good at that, and since you caught the likeness, maybe you can start the Discussion? Can someone please take a look at this article? Most of the sources are in Korean but the two in English give her name as Heo Jung-eun (허정은). The article appears to mostly be a copy of Heo Jung-eun. It's possible Heo changed her name, but that would need to be sourced, and there shouldn't be two articles about the same person. Lenoresm (talk) 20:04, 19 August 2019 (UTC)

@Chiyako92: It seems you already finished the discussion over there. Anyways, BTS should have sold definitely way more albums than Girls' Generation or Super Junior. The music markets in the world have been in decline for more than 20 years now. And this decline was huge. In some years, some countries fell by like 50%. Today's music industry is only a fraction of what it was used to in the 1980s or mid 1990s. This fall was no different for Korea at first. However, Korea and China were the only two countries in the past decade, that were able to turn this trend. All other countries are still shrinking as of today. You can compare all the IFPI data. To get back to the topic. Although, Korea was the first country that could stop the downturn, already mid 2000s or so, around of 2010, Korea was not even in the top 20 of the biggest music markets in the world. As of 2017 or 2018, Korea is the 6th biggest music market in the world. So, at the time Super Junior and Girls' Generation were popular, the market was much smaller than today. All the currently popular artists sell more than the "back then popular" artists. Nevertheless, the linked Gaon site only takes artists into consideration who debuted after 2010. FYI: VANK trying to manipulate Wikipedia

  • VANK guidelines (in Korean, backup in case they take this down)
    • page 4 to 12 is the AfC process documentation, page 14 to 17 is about Commons uploading and page 18 for using it on Wikipedia, page 19 about AfC process itself and bypassing AfC by being autoconfirmed. The rest is about manipulating other Wikipedias like French, German, etc etc.

I've received this from someone @ Korean Wikipedia. The guide documents how to create an DRAFT for WP:AfC, how to bypass AfC by being autoconfirmed (with something wrong in the docs), and the initiative to change the some page title to Dokdo and East Sea. I am not sure where to post this so my natural choice is here.

Thanks to dear Revi (apologies for the familiar, the perks of meeting a WP Steward in real-life) for keeping us apprised of this group with assumed POV intent on Wikipedia...that Yonhap covered it is very interesting. But it is hard for a non-Korean to understand the political (or for Wikipedia editors, the POV) implications and how it affects normal editors. In the past, I have even been alerted to distinguishing "South Korea" instead of "Korea" in regular usage by a South Korean editor on English Wikipedia. As a foreigner, I cannot say what the differences in writing one or the other means, but I think it mattered to him greatly and I have tried to honor it in my work henceforth, only calling the language "Korean".
On the issue of the East Sea....for example, reliable newspapers, JoongAng Ilbo and The Korea Times call the Sea of Japan the "East Sea", [3], [4]...which I used at tourist related pages Sea Train (Korail) and Jeongdongjin Station (for this one I noted both names for the sea). I have additionally used "West Sea" for Yellow Sea for the page G-Train (Korail), per a citation at Korea JoongAng Daily, [5].
I read the Yonhap article, provided by Revi, on VANK's booklet, which was written by a political science and diplomacy major at Yonsei University as saying it is a means of correcting "Korean history distortions and errors", not as a criticism by the media. And, being from the U.S., where our history books glazed over native American and black American content during my school years, I have reservations before jumping to conclusions here.
Any thoughts or feedback that can help me here? Yes I know that we have named Liancourt Rocks as such due to the age of the name and politics haven't changed it yet to Dokdo....but is VANK, in general, doing something wrong (I myself advise new users how to make a few edits to be able to edit a locked page, and advise them to create a User profile to look more friendly).--Bonnielou2013 (talk) 07:04, 3 September 2019 (UTC)
Addition - I may have answered my own question after looking at the VANK page and doing some more research. I see that the group are activists for a cause, however well-meaning, and should be monitored for NPOV additions to WP. The alert by Revi was a revelation to me, and perhaps other editors. Well done.
