Issues with DISPATCH

I am asking your attention to help classify DISPATCH as unreliable source here.

To be honest, I am not sure why DISPATCH has yet to classified as unreliable after all those rumors. (Perhaps the senior editors thought Dispatch was obviously not reliable?) The problem with keep putting DISPATCH in the grey area is that some editors start discriminately use DISPATCH as source: if the reports benefits their favorites, they use DISPATCH report, albeit its anonymous and uncorroborated nature. That is not neutral at all.

I want to use a precedence that The Sun is considered unreliable by Wiki editors. It's really about time to list DISPATCH as well. TheWandering (talk) 03:30, 30 December 2022 (UTC)

Thanks. It's just unbelievable that the Korean editors are not active while K-Pop is a popular issue. The reason why I keep it in Korean wiki is because I'm worried the editors from other countries outside Asia are not familiar with Dispatch.

Input from experienced editors familiar with Korean history needed

There is an open unblock request at User talk:Judication that includes a list of very detailed proposed edits relating to various Korean history projects, specifically Goguryeo, Balhae, Gojoseon and Hanbok. I brought this to the attention of WP:AN, but it doesn't look like there are any currently-active admins familiar enough with the subject matter to evaluate the unblock request. Question: Naming conventions

I noticed there's two conflicting rules about naming conventions on different pages.

  1. On Wikipedia:Naming conventions (Korean), it says "Revised Romanization should be used for South Korean and pre-1945 Korean names, McCune–Reischauer for North Korean names."
  2. On Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Korea-related articles, it says "In general, use the Revised Romanization system for articles with topics about South Korea. Use McCune–Reischauer (not the DPRK's official variant) for topics about North Korea and topics about Korea before the division."

The conflict is on pre 1945. What do we do? I'm personally in favor of RR for pre-1945; outside of Western academia (importantly, within Korea), it seems to be the more popular choice. toobigtokale (talk) 20:49, 6 April 2023 (UTC)

Tons of random Presbyterian Church in Korea branch articles

I found a ton of random articles of Presbyterian Church in Korea branches, which can all be found here. The only references in these articles are entries in a database of church addresses. These all might be notable, but I'm not sure and the titles are also written oddly, so hopefully someone familiar with this can take a look at it. Yeah this def seems odd. Some reportedly have thousands of attendees, so could arguably be considered notable. At very least the titles need to be changed to fit Wikipedia:Article titles. Maybe would just be easier to delete them all becasue they create more hassle than is worth dealing with. Yi Hwang

The Joeson Dynasty scholar Yi Hwang is listed in the Wikipedia entry about the I Ching as an an early influence in the Silhak reform movement. However, he is not listed on the Silhak page as a prominent scholar. Should he be added? Thank you. McConnell (talk) 22:18, 6 April 2023 (UTC)

I think not if he predated it. Based on some googling, Korean encyclopedias don't list him as part of the Silhak movement but occasionally mention him as a precursor to it. toobigtokale (talk) 00:06, 7 April 2023 (UTC)

Project-independent quality assessments

Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. Search in Korean?

Can someone fluent in Korean search for sourcing for the book The Magical Moment? My computer doesn't want to open Korean websites for whatever reason. The book was only ever released in Korean so I'd like to have someone check to see if there's anything out there in the Korean language. From what I could find/produce it looks like the sourcing is mostly promotional type stuff, but there is a mention of it being a bestseller so I'd appreciate it if someone could do a quick sweep. @ReaderofthePack A search on GScholar shows some mentions, but [1] seems to be a short story with the same (Korean) title by a different author. When I tried to control the search by adding the author's name ("마법의 순간" 코엘료) I got nothing. Mind you, my Korean is at the beginner's level. Ten Asia Global Top Ten Awards

I don't think this is a notable award, but it's all over tons of articles, with most noms sourced either directly to TenAsia (website/twt acc) or really low quality secondary sources (e.g. 1, 2, 3 pulled from the Enhypen awards page). Has anyone come across actual acceptable coverage from reliable secondary sources to justify keeping this, because I haven't, and if not, then another encyclopedia-wide removal is in order. -- Carlobunnie (talk) 19:44, 14 April 2023 (UTC)

I did a search on Naver News, and most of the results are from TenAsia itself. (I was briefly tricked by this 2018 article from The Korea Economic Daily, but turns out it's owned by the same company as TenAsia, and the article is reposted from TenAsia. Thought this could be helpful to know if you come across similar sources.) As far as I can tell, there are virtually no reliable secondary sources in Korean that establish the significance of this award. Lenoresm (talk) 00:13, 15 April 2023 (UTC)

I also went through Naver but like 99% of the results are from either TenAsia itself or Hankyung (so, same thing). I could find 10 articles from other websites and 9 were almost identical, mentioning how Ticketbay (Korea's largest ticket brokerage platform) was officially selling voting rights for the awards. There was only one article from 2018 announcing the creation of the award. And reading about it it doesn't really sound notable at all.. it's from a specific media outlet that only involves 10 countries. There are a lot of 'awards' like that (money grabbers basically) which also serve as bragging material for fans. I don't see a difference between that and adding poll results from websites that masquerade as legitimate awards (you know the ones that pop up on twitter among solo fanbases). - Ïvana (talk) 03:49, 6 May 2023 (UTC)
I just completed removing 18 instances of the TGTTAs (including the one mentioned above), as per a wikipedia search for the awards name, and linked this discussion in my edit summaries. Hi, i just saw that the Ten Asia Global Top Ten Awards in Enhypen awards section was removed, and my question is: all the awards section from other groups who had TTA Awards also follow the same criteria? because i just saw a couple of them and I only see 1 Naver or Hankyung source, and no secondary sources. If the Enhypen awards section would be corrected following the criteria previously mentioned, made it to all the k-pop articles who had the same awards in their lists. Geography and climate

Currently Geography of South Korea includes climate, however the coverage seems deficient and does not have relevant topics such as the 2023 South Korea floods. Note that some countries have separate articles on Wikipedia for geography and climate but others have them combined like South Korea. Hello, I've been translating sources for the Se-rim_Moon article and found this source [2], where the woman was appointed as an Andtree Angel. I can't figure out what that is, it appears to be some sort of charitable organization, she's a spokesperson for it? If anyone can locate a substantial article about her, can you please share it with me (most I find only comment on photos she's posted to her instagram and comment on what she's wearing).

Does anyone know a good online news archive website?

I am working on taking Phaethon (roller coaster) to GA and I'm having trouble finding archived online sources for the "History" section. Naver News aggregates online news stories going back to the 90s. Here's a search for Phaeton + Gyeongju World in Korean. If you're looking for older print articles, the Naver News Library has scans of newspapers from the 1920s to 1999, but the interface makes it more difficult to translate the text if you don't read Korean. (FYI, I can read and speak Korean) Sorry to say this but I have unsuccessfully tried using Naver News before making this post to find details about Phaethon's opening and the events leading up to it in the past..... it was quite difficult to find details using Naver News alone. Naver News Library does look like a helpful resource for researching Korea related stuff though. Restrictions on geographic data in South Korea

My new article on Korean topics. I could not locate a ko wiki equivalent. I added an ill to ko:위키컨퍼런스 서울 2023의 발표자를 10월 12일까지 모집합니다 but I couldn't find the Korean name or wiki article for Act on Construction and Management of Spatial Information mentioned in the cited academic article (maybe this?). I'd love to help with this topic, but I will need to do a lot of research, since this is something on my "I want to learn about this" list rather than "I know something about it". As for your second question, I fear that Korean topics on en wiki are edited primarily by fans of K-pop, and we lack someone interested in more serious topics and active enough to help in those areas :( For example, I'd love to write Korean science fiction article, but sources are lacking - see also [4]. Photo

Can anyone in South Korea take pictures for the Ddaetgol Village article? It's in Ansan. Trynna spread awareness of South Korea's immigrant communities, and images go a long way. I've scraped all my usual sources to see if there's any pictures with an appropriate license, but there's not many pictures of the place in the first place. toobigtokale (talk) 13:11, 18 October 2023 (UTC)

@Toobigtokale Good news: I live here. Well, not exactly there, but in this town. I'll take care of this eventually. Bad news: I just need to find a good time for a bike or bus ride, which sadly these days is more difficult then it was before. Please remind me about this if I forget.
That said, as someone who is somewhat local, I have minor concerns about this article's accuracy. As in, it is roughly correct that this area of Ansan has many foreigners, including Koryo-saram, but the location of the "village" (effectively just a minor neighbourhood, few blocks) is likely too limited. In this area - which for me is the wider Ansan station area, see also Wongok-dong which your article links to but vice versa - there are many non-Western foreigners (also Korean-Chinese). What I am saying is that I am not sure if what you write about shouldn't be merged to Wongok-dong, and how accurate this is. I'll ask some local Koryo-saram I know (and hey, maybe I can ask them for a photo too!).
(Side note: actually there is a also small enclabe of Russian-speaking Koryo-saram next to my workplace around the ERICA campus of the Hanyang university, that I can photograph anytime easily - there are Koryo-saram bakeries and restaurants there, with cyryllic signs on the street).
There are many of my older photos from Ansan on Commons, but I can't locate anything from that exact area (in fact, I can't find my Ansan station photos there...). Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 03:34, 19 October 2023 (UTC)
That makes sense, thanks for giving the article a look through. If you can take those misc photographs of Koryo-saram in Ansan, please do. I may write about the Koryo-saram population in Ansan as a whole, so I may use them.
Actually, maybe I should just write an article called "Koryo-saram in Ansan"; do you think that's better? Of course the other foreign population matters too, but for now I'm trying to write on what I know. @Toobigtokale Since I haven't done a lit review, I don't know what would be a good focus. I have lived in Ansan for a decade now, but I am sad to say my knowledge of the local setting is... somewhat random, partially due to my still very limited Korean. I can certainly help with some photography, at least. What is the address of that "three-floored Koryo-saram community center"? Ditto for "Koryoin Cafe Ugolok/고려인 카페 우갈록" (I can't find the latter even when searching for Korean name in Naver Maps). For the record, there are plenty of Koryo-saram shops (bakeries, restaurants, etc.) in Ansan. That said, a lot of the folks frequenting and running them are emigrants for the "stans" (folks from Uzbekistan, Kazachstan, etc.) - I am not sure if all of them are "Koryo-saram". They do seem to speak Russian much more then Korean (and their cafes will run Russian TV channels, not Korean). It's really a fascinating community (Ansan in general) and I hope we can look for more sources - or that at least I can read more of your research on this. Community center (안산시 고려인문화센터): 37 Jigok-ro 6-gil, alternatively 988-3 Seonbu-dong, Danwon-gu.
For cafe, I'm not sure this still exists, and if it does it's only run by volunteers on the weekends according to a FB post in 2019. 45 Sincheon-ro Danwon-gu.
For an alternate landmark, MARINA Bakery is apparently pretty well known and liked by the South Korean community. MARINA has two locations on google maps; I think it's moved but not sure which is current. It's either in the same building as the cafe, or at 19 Bubu-ro 8-gil, Danwon-gu.
I'll definitely be reading more into Ansan. I only learned it was so immigrant-dense while researching for this article. I'm interested in immigrants in South Korea in general so this topic fits my interest pretty neatly.
On another note for article notability, I think there's decent coverage of the enclave. This village has at least a few dozen articles specifically talking about it (possibly hundreds since the 2010s), and it's recognized by the local government, although its exact boundaries are diffuse. But reading into the criteria for noteworthiness on human settlements it does seem like it'll come down to consensus on whether this merits its own article. I kinda like having an article for it because it gives more attention specifically to a group that could benefit from it. It also is one of two hubs for Koryo-saram in the country. Also worth noting that in 2016 the area reportedly was 90% Koryo-saram; maybe that's changed recently. toobigtokale (talk) 06:55, 19 October 2023 (UTC)

Notability of Children of the Rune

This is a Korean fantasy novel. Sadly, the article fails WP:GNG (just a lenghty plot summary) and the Korean article does not appear to better (just shorter). Can anyone help to rescue it from deletion? Korean Wiki states (without a source) that "It is promoted as a model of Korean fantasy ", ". It has a total sales record of over 3 million copies both domestically and internationally." and that it "has now been translated and published in Japan, Taiwan, and the People's Republic of China, gaining popularity in many Asian countries" (possible, it has ja and zh wiki articles). I think it now has an English translation too, although I can't see much reception ([5], [6] - some info but from the publisher? Intereview with the author. Changing Japanese nationalities to Korean

hello. Currently, it seems to be used in the English Wikipedia without distinguishing between Koreans in Japan and Japanese people of Korean. These two are different concepts; Koreans in Japan have Korean nationality, and Japanese people of Korean descent have Japanese nationality.
In 1945, Korea was liberated from Japan, and all Koreans lost their Japanese nationality due to the San Francisco Treaty. Among those people, those who could not return to Korea and remained in Japan became Koreans in Japan. On January 29, 1952, the Korean and Japanese governments discussed these issues, and the contents included '1. 'Both Korea and Japan recognize that Koreans in Japan are citizens of the Republic of Korea and not of Japan.(1. 한일 양국은 재일한국인이 대한민국 국민이며 일본 국민이 아님을 승인한다.)'[7]
Additionally, upon inquiring with an official of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Korea, they responded that Koreans residing in Japan are citizens of the Republic of Korea under the Constitution.[8]
Koreans in Japan are special permanent residents active in Japan and their nationality is Korean. Because they are not Japanese citizens, there are restrictions on things like suffrage, which leads to social problems in Japan. If they acquire Japanese nationality, they are no longer Koreans in Japan, but Japanese people of Korean descent. There is no source at all for the article that some Koreans in Japan included people who became Japanese, and this story itself cannot be found in Korea.
To summarize because the article is long, Koreans in Japan are a special case due to the Japanese colonial period.
Most of these people were born and live in Japan, so they are misunderstood as Japanese, but in terms of nationality, they are Korean.[9]

Not that I disagree, but looking at Wikipedia:WikiProject_Korea#Article_assessment, only 3 articles are at GA+ class, and most are at C or below. At C-class, Yi Sun-sin represents the 'average' level here. We have a lot of work to do - missing articles to be written, and existing ones to be improved. Wikipedia will not be completed anytime soon (unless we see some weird AI-level revolutionary help that would effectively increase our manpower by several factors :P). Dear all. In my opinion, sourcing issues should be the priority. See https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Yi_Sun-sin&oldid=1184272416 for an evaluation. None of the usual "usuals" is used. A large part of the so called references aren't even fully written... and therefore they aren't even existing. Many sources are quoted for a single factoid and not used for anything else. The model seems to be: write something about what you misundertood from a TV-series and grep Google for finding some backup. For example, the VANK YSS site contains a large page describing the modern days' sites about YSS... and should have been used for a section of the wp article. Another example: using the Archeologia blog only to prove Left+Right isn't a proof of competence. Good luck to anyone trying to fix such a mess ! Pldx1 (talk) 11:39, 9 November 2023 (UTC)

Yi Sun-sin, Goguryeo, y osotros. While trying to deal with the Yi Sun-sin's References section, I have examined the References sections of all the Naval Battles pages. They are only cut-and-paste of each other. Some items have no relation at all with the Imjin Waeran. Photos of buildings can be uploaded here on Wikipedia and tagged with {{FoP-USonly|South Korea}}. I'm afraid that photos of sculptures, characters, and complex art designs wouldn't be allowed on either project.

@Piotrus: The English Wikipedia is bound by FOP laws of the United States, so copyrighted sculptures are still considered non-free here. In the articles you mentioned above, only a single non-free photo would be justified by policy. Unfortunately, there are no tools that allows transfers from Commons to language projects, so they must be uploaded manually with proper attribution. ✗plicit 01:39, 26 October 2023 (UTC)
