Suggestion to pull this project under WikiProject United States

It was recently suggested that this project might be inactive or semiactive and it might be beneficial to include it in the list of projects supported by WikiProject United States. After reviewing the project it appears that there is some active discussions on the talk page and some content updates to the project page but being supported by a larger project might be beneficial. This discussion is intended to start the process of determining if the project members are interested in the project being added to the projects supported by WikiProject United States. --Kumioko (talk) 17:10, 6 July 2011 (UTC)

I hope so too. I appreciate it but I can't think of anything off hand. I am going to use AWB to replace the templates so that should go pretty quick although there are quite a few so it may take a couple days. So what does it mean when it becomes supported by WikiProject United States? Would WikiProject West Virginia become a task force under WP:United States? Or would it just be marked as defunct and all articles absorbed into WP:United States? Royal broil 15:30, 24 July 2011 (UTC)

Neither, The project will still remain independant for the most part. Its true that the West Virginia Banner will be replaced with WPUS with the West Virginia embedded in it but the articles are shared between the 2 projects. Its not an effort to defunct the project or too make it a task force. Its an effort to make sure that the articles recieve some visibility and too revive this WPWV by giving it more visibility through the larger project. --Kumioko (talk) 17:32, 24 July 2011 (UTC)

What about WikiProject West Virginia University? I think it should be pulled under WikiProject West Virginia and WikiProject United States since it is completely inactive since it has never been added to the WikiProject United States banner. I don't want convert WikiProject West Virginia into a task force of WikiProject United States any time soon, West Virginia University WikiProject should be converted into a task force of WikiProject West Virginia, because it has only 6 members and no guidelines, and no articles. If not, I will take this to WP:MFD if there is no activty and little discussion on the project's talk page. JJ98 (Talk / Contributions) 08:24, 25 August 2011 (UTC)

Just to calrify West Virginia isn't a taskforce of United States its just supported by United States the United States banner. With that said I'm not sure if there is much value in adding WVU to the list of supported projects. I don't have a problem with it per sey but with the limited scope of the project and given that it has zero articles and is inactive I don't think there is much value in it. I also checked its history and it appears that there never was that much activity so it doesn't really look like it ever got off the ground. In muy opinion if you want to submit it for MFD that would be fine. If it ends up being kept then we can talk about what to do with it. --Kumioko (talk) 13:27, 25 August 2011 (UTC)

A proposal has been made to delete all Pittsburgh Pirates rivalry articles save Phillies-Pirates. I am posting this for West Virginia since MLB territory as well as the Designated Market Area extends into much of West Virginia. Someone from West Virginia might have better access to sources for this article. I discovered the Whitakers and thought that the family as a whole deserved an article, as they seemed to have been important as an interlinked family business for many years, as well as individually. McClintic Wildlife Management Area

DO we have a standard for WV Counties?????

OK, I tried to start a central discussion with arcane code that really is about as user friendly as a serial killer. so, I will try this here. The current County template looky looky is great, in fact, its very good. BUT, it needs to reflect some comments or have some sort of flesh to inform people of what should and should NOT be in a county article. Example, Notable residents, WHERE do they go? I am not going to debate, Notable, OH NO, I am stating, that it needs a section on the template. Also, if the "Notable person" has no citation on the web, in Wiki or in a book, do we delete them?

Second part, its great to have new structures/buildings discussed, but, can we all agree, that the NEW WALMART! or the NEW TACO BELL! should not be in the county article???? ALSO, listing phone numbers and county officials without refs, can we comment the template with something like, PLEASE do not list phone numbers, PLEASE cite the facts and figures discussed......We have new folks here who have NO idea about this, and thats fine, BUT a template that lists this, would be great for the experienced editors and the new person. For those of us who have coded, we called these fine things COMMENTS.

PLEASE let me know what it would take to be an agreement on this? OR should I just edit the proposed template on [this page myself and let the world moan and groan about it post fact, because lets face it, someone will object, hey, I think I will do that!Coal town guy (talk) 00:23, 15 March 2013 (UTC)

Discussion to remove the Automatically assessed logic from the WikiProject United States template

Greetings, there is a discussion regarding removal of the logic used to populate Automatically assessed article categories from Template:WikiProject United States. Most of the categories (over 220 Wikipedia wide) were deleted in February 2013 because they were empty. These categories were previously populated by a bot that hasn't run since 2011 and the categories aren't used. Removal of this uneeded/unused logic will greatly reduce the size and complexity of the WikiProject United States template. Any comments or questions are encouraged here. Lest there is any confusion for people who don't speak the same language, the words "logic used to populate Automatically assessed article categories" refer to the feature that was supposed to allow this WikiProject's template to "inherit" class and importance ratings from other WikiProjects. Recognized content

Would it be more aesthetically pleasing and perhaps more organized if we format our recognized content on the WikiProject main page in a similar way to Wikipedia:WikiProject Virginia/Recognized content and Wikipedia:WikiProject California? Suggestion

Hello all! I was curious if anyone else thought it might be a good idea to make a (nonbinding) guideline on how all the individual US state WikiProjects should organize themselves, to help standardize them. I originally put this suggestion in the WikiProject United States talk page, so feel free to look there if you're interested. It's pretty empty though; basically all they said was to see what each of the individual projects thought about it. Please tell me if you have any concerns with this idea; hopefully we can find a way for everyone to love it! Monongah Article Upgrade

I did some work on the Monongah, West Virginia article. I'm not so good at trimming up the source citations, but I did provide links and titles best I could. I couldn't find a specific date in 1891 for the chartering of the town, which seemed odd. Looks like the legislature admitted a bunch of them at once. Perhaps someone with access to the official records or someone from town hall could provide a date and source? The article was full of opinions and minutia, much of which I disposed of. Check the previous iteration of the article and see if you disagree with the cuts. I'm in NJ and just happened to become interested in the town because the mine disaster is reputed to have prompted the start of Father's Day in the US. I learned a bit about Marion County today, my gift for Father's Day. Good luck with your work. ~~

WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Twomile was formerly Cuckleburr Creek

A tiny issue that is important to me, but otherwise of low importance is that Twomile Creek that runs over the ridge toward Edens Fork in Kanawha County, WV was formerly named Cuckleburr Creek. My mother was born there. Since I live in California, looking on a map was useless, for no such place seemed to exist, even when I checked with real estate contractors, etc.; nobody knew where it was. In 1999, while in West Virginia, I talked with an adult cousin (mother's nephew, born 1939), who used to walk over that ridge regularly as a child. He told me that Cuckleburr Creek was just over the ridge along Twomile, headed toward Edens Fork. Well, that was helpful, but I had no proof he was right. So I drove there, and at first there was no evidence. I saw an old man in a rocking chair (believe it or not) sitting on his front porch. I found a place to park and walked back to his residence (on Kanawha Two Mile Rd that runs alongside Twomile Creek). I inquired if he knew where Cuckleburr Creek was located. He said, this is it. He went in the house and showed me a utility bill that said Cuckleburr Creek on it for his address, still in use by the utility company (I don't know which one) in 1999, even though the name had changed long ago.

Hence my problem. I wanted to add Cuckleburr Creek as a former name of Twomile Creek, but I have no way to produce documented verification. Would this qualify for an exception in terms of "verifiable"?^[1]

I don't think it does. The problem with this sort of citation is that nobody but you can verify it—and even if it were online, all it would show is the address, not that "Cockleburr Creek" was ever the proper name of the creek. It's possible that it's a name for the creek—but it could only have been a name for the road, or an alternative name that never caught on beyond the neighbourhood. I checked USGS topographical maps of the area from 1909, 1958, and 1994, looking up and down all the branches of Twomile Creek that I could find, and some adjacent areas, just in case it was actually the name of another nearby creek, which the same road went to. It's possible that I missed it—the oldest map is the most likely to show names no longer in use, but the scale is also less helpful—features are much smaller, and small details are more likely to be nameless.

You can find these maps at the USGS Map Store (Google it, zoom in to find the area, and look for "products available". You don't have to pay for anything—the maps are free as pdf files you can download to your computer and zoom in to actual size, although I'd avoid the most recent ones, since they've got multiple CGI layers. The prices are just for having printed copies sent to you). I also checked the US Geographic Names Information System, and couldn't find any place called "Cockleburr" listed—normally it would include any place appearing on these maps, but there could be a typo: I note that "Cocklebur" is usually spelled with one 'r', and I may have missed it that way. You might try old county histories, if they have an index or you can search geographically—if there's a Hardesty's for Kanawha County, it might list the creeks in each of the original magisterial districts, but might not include the smaller branches.

Another possibility is that there was a post office called "Cockleburr Creek", even though the creek was never formally given that name. In the 19th century, postmasters were often allowed to name their post offices, which were smaller and much more local than they are today. Records of the appointment of postmasters are of public record, and can be viewed over the internet, in some cases. Or you might look for old Kanawha County deeds from the area—if you can identify properties that should have been along the creek, you might be able to trace them back—19th century deeds are often available for free to registered users on FamilySearch. Though it might be hard to get back that far without searching in Kanawha County... The difference between deeds and a utility bill is that deeds are matters of public record. Even if they're hard for other people to find without going to a place where they're kept, they're definitely verifiable sources. As would be any published map or local history, or the Appointments of Postmasters. I may try a couple of things later on. But as for the utility bill, I don't think that qualifies as a verifiable source, since nobody else can view it, and even if they could, all it does is show the address, not prove the creek name. Does this place exist?

It's Algeria, West Virginia. Such a placename is attested, but after a quick search online I wasn't able to find any substantial information about it at all. Is there anything I'm missing? Do we need this article? Incidentally, the article gets about 6 views a day, and 5 of them are due to the hatnote at Algeria. – Uanfala (talk) 17:05, 13 January 2021 (UTC)

It's likely that the place is mentioned in local histories and county records. Even if there's not a lot of traffic, the fact that readers might come across the name and wonder where it is seems like a good reason for it to have an entry. Of course, it is barely a stub, but so are many articles in major encyclopedias—except that unlike them, we're not concerned with page count. I suppose that this and similarly short articles about ghost towns or "barely there" communities could be consolidated into longer articles about such places in each county—but in that case, the present title would redirect there, meaning that in practical terms, this title would still exist. Not sure that would be an improvement. Would it be better if readers hoping to find information about a small or formerly-populated place they've heard about find nothing on Wikipedia, instead of confirmation that it exists, or did exist, in a particular place? The concern then would be the reliability of the little content we have here – a stub based entirely on a mention in a database doesn't inspire much confidence here. Since the source is the GNIS, I think we can take it for granted that the information cited to it is correct. That's about as authoritative a source as there is. There may be mistakes, and omissions—I've seen a few—but the GNIS is presumptively reliable in cases like this. We're holding the event again, asynchronously, during the third week of March (March 20-25).

Our Edit-a-thon is focused on amplifying the stories and figures of under-represented Appalachian artists, writers, and other creators, particularly womxn, people of color, LGBTQ individuals, and other disenfranchised communities.
