Wikipedia:WikiTown/Freopedia/Articles/Round 1 articles

Could an administrator please move Wikipedia:WikiTown/Freopedia/Articles/Round 1 articles from Category:Freopedia (a container category) into Category:WikiTown Freopedia project pages where it probably belongs. (The page is protected, so I can't do it myself.) Mitch Ames (talk) 13:37, 3 March 2017 (UTC)

Note - contested - there is no obvious attempt by mitch to actually discuss the arrangement of the categories with fellow participants, and at this stage there is no sign that the arrangements of the categories have been adequately discussed as to which system is to be the final - probably belongs is making an assumption as we are in the middle of a re-arrangement of freopedia material, and there has not been a consensus arrived discussion anywhere about this direction yet. Given that:
  • Category:Freopedia has been a container category - and as such "should only contain subcategories" - since 2014,
  • WP:SUBCAT has been a generally-accepted guideline for some years
  • There's no obvious discussion that I can find that says we're just going to ignore the above points
I didn't feel the need to ask permission first before I:
  • moved non-category pages out of a category that clearly states that it should only contain subcategories
  • moved pages from a parent category into a more specific child category, per WP:SUBCAT
  • removed pages from a parent category when the page is already in a child of that parent, per WP:SUBCAT
But feel free to post a link to the discussion where everybody else agreed that we'd just ignore the banners at the top of the container categories, and ignore SUBCAT. Mitch Ames (talk) 13:53, 4 March 2017 (UTC)
  • Given that the Round 1 articles page has been in the category since 2013, perhaps it shouldn't have been marked as a container cat in the first place. Note also that the subcats are automatically populated by the {{Freopedia}} banner (see template doc); I'm not sure it makes sense to mix those auto-categorised talk pages with manually-categorised non-talk pages. - Evad37 [talk] 00:32, 5 March 2017 (UTC)
    • Note the original modifications were part of a possible change to the way the project is titled, and organised - It (the process of change was regarding the project direction and possible modifications to names of items) has not yet been established exactly which direction - which is why it is not clear at this point, which is why playing with cats and their context and meanings is missing the point completely) is still in process.. and is pointless to get to this stage of discussing the cats - the rationale behind the change has not been clarified - which makes this discussion all the further pointless JarrahTree 02:36, 5 March 2017 (UTC)
  • since its not a container category but rather a project maintenance category I have removed the container tag, when the page in question there was an assumption that further rounds of plaques would take place, there was a small subset created for FPA but no page was created to list them at the time. OK, so Category:Freopedia is no longer a container category, but my point re WP:SUBCAT remains. I know they're project pages not article pages, but is there any reason why we ought not apply SUBCAT here? Also, as Evad37 points out, {{Freopedia}} puts pages into sub-categories automatically, and mixing manual- and auto-categorization may not be helpful. Although I notice that some of the pages in question don't have {{Freopedia}} on their talk pages - Wikipedia talk:WikiTown/Freopedia/Bibliography, Wikipedia talk:WikiTown/Freopedia/Fremantle Studies. Perhaps they should?

Please provide a link to the discussions about these proposed changes. It might help if I had some idea as to what was "in process". In any case resolving these anomalies in the categorization now may not be necessary, but it does not hurt. In fact I suggest that future changes might be easier if what we currently have conforms to some sort of overall plan - it's easier to change from one set of consistency to a different set of consistency than it is to change things to a new plan when only some things are initially consistent with the old plan. There is no specific resolved written plan it is simply something at discussions and throwing ideas around stage - the question is to whether (a) create something somewhere that explains the wikitown idea and process - wiki-wide, rather than here - there is an idea, but it hasnt gone as far as a central explanatory point to explain it and the processes involved (b) leave the wikitown term out completely and simply have independent 'xxxpedias' - again this is not the place for this. As part of next sundays meetup - it might be discussed, and as it actually is a number of steps up where it might be discussed. Possible article subject

It came to my attention that Perth's "colourful" union leader Joe McDonald does not have an article listed at the Joseph McDonald disambiguation page. As described in this article, he is retiring after 30 years in the business, with regular news coverage for most of that time. Toodyay vs West Toodyay vs Newcastle

How are we going to disambiguate these, especially in the use of Toodyay give the growing number of West Toodyay articles which talk of Toodyay(now West Toodyay). My thoughts are for disambiguation we should be using West Toodyay as for all practical reasons that is where the sites are. While we arent suppose to create new things in the text maybe we should use something like Old Toodyay with a link to the Naming of Toodyay, Western Australia article in the first instance. thoughts please Gnangarra 05:47, 26 June 2017 (UTC)

Given that West Toodyay is in Category:Heritage places in Toodyay, Western Australia, which (not surprisingly) is in Category:Toodyay, Western Australia, one might reasonably expect that Category:West Toodyay should be in Category:Toodyay, Western Australia and Category:Buildings and structures in West Toodyay should be in Category:Buildings and structures in Toodyay.
(Of course if we do put cat:West Toodyay into cat:Toodyay, etc, appropriate sacrifices to appease the gods of SUBCAT may be required. )

There have been a few suggestions in recent e-mail conversations regarding the titles of the articles. I think that it would be advantageous to the project for these discussions to be on Wikipedia talk pages, particularly in light of Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2017 June 29#Category:Buildings and structures in West Toodyay, so the summary below is an attempt to get the discussion (back) onto Wikipedia, while respecting the privacy of the off-wiki communications and real-life identities.

Proposal 1
that article titles be changed from Foo, Toodyay to Foo, “Old” Toodyay, now West Toodyay
Proposal 2
Foo at West Toodyay", with subheading West Toodyay formerly known as Toodyay or The original town of Toodyay or similar.

"... it needs to be clear, precise and easily accessed by Googling ... it is important to include the name ‘West Toodyay’ in a way that distinguishes it from the original town named ‘Toodyay’. And it also needs to be in done in a way which avoids confusion with the today’s Toodyay township."

My thoughts on proposal 1:

An article title like Military Barracks, "Old" Toodyay, now West Toodyay is unnecessarily complicated. "West Toodyay" would probably be better than "Old Toodyay" because the location is currently called West Toodyay; "Old Toodyay" is just too confusing.

On proposal 2:

An article title of "... at West Toodyay" is contrary to WP:ATDAB and WP:NCDAB, so we should stick to the comma or parentheses, whichever is appropriate.

So far as I know Wikipedia does not support subheadings. The lead sentence should unambiguously describe the topic including the location where relevant. In some cases I know the article explicitly says "West Toodyay" (example: The Queen's Head) but others (eg Military Barracks say "Toodyay, Western Australia" and probably ought be corrected.

I don't think Google is going to have a problem finding the article, especially if the first sentence includes the correct location - and in any case Wikipedia policies would take precedence over Google's algorithms.

Independently of the article titles and whether the articles themselves refer to Toodyay or West Toodyay or Old Toodyay, there may be merit in putting a {{notice}} on the articles (excluding West Toodyay itself), something like:

  • what about to dab them all as Foo, West Toodyay current location, then create redirects at Foo, Toodyay and Foo, Old Toodyay or if necessary to put a hat note where a similar named current Toodyay location exists directing the reader to those articles. plus the above note but word it to cover all options including current Toodyay articles.

With a bit of Evad and Sams magic wand waving it could be a special more visually friendly template that could be specifically worded for which ever is the current location rather than the notice box.(Gnangarra) BiblioTech (talk) 02:08, 3 July 2017 (UTC)

Article titles of Foo, West Toodyay would be OK. If nothing else "West Toodyay" is unambiguous (it only ever refers to one place, whereas "Toodyay" meant different places at different times). I'm a bit concerned about the amount of text in the 2nd {{notice}} box (even my initial proposal is a bit long for my liking) - I think we should try to keep it relatively short and uncluttered - the details are in the link targets, if the user wants to know - we should probably not have a potted history of the town(s) at the top of every page. (At the very least, delete the words "and its sources" - we're only concerned with the scope of the article, not the scope of the sources.) However perhaps an alternative would be a footnote (separate to references, eg see Notes vs References in Raffaele Martelli) which could put after the first reference to (the original) "Toodyay" in any article Foo, West Toodyay, where that reference to "Toodyay" is historically accurate (because that's what it was called at the time). A footnote is not as "in your face" as the {{notice}} so could be longer, with more detail, without being intrusive. Example:

The Church of Sancta Maria was the first Catholic church built in the original townsite of Toodyay[a] in Western Australia.[1]

'West Toodyay' seems like the best disambiguation term, as it is not itself ambiguous. The notice boxes above are a bit too loud for articles, but a simpler version as a hatnote could work, e.g.

This article is about a [building/place/whatever] in West Toodyay (originally known as Toodyay), which should not be confused with the current Toodyay (previously known as Newcastle).

That lets readers know that what "Toodyay" refers to depends on context, with links for details if readers are interested – but without being too long or 'in-your-face', since the article prose should be providing context when appropriate. - Evad37 [talk] 16:52, 3 July 2017 (UTC)

Toodyay pioneer heritage trail and West Toodyay - matching items with new articles

Does anyone know if the following items on Toodyay pioneer heritage trail correspond to the new articles:

The Toodyay Pioneer Heritage brochure was originally published by the WA Heritage Committee before it became the Heritage Council of WA. I believe it was one of the very early of the series of Heritage Trails. There is no digital copy of this brochure. I contacted the State Heritage Office in January 2017 and was advised while they had a record of this brochure it was inaccessible due to having been saved in an old format. I can forward a scanned copy of this brochure which contains a map of West Toodyay prior to re-alignment of Julimar Road. The brochure identifies the following places: West Toodyay School, Samuel Ferguson's Cottage, Royal Oak Inn, Highland Laddie, Queen's Head, Military Barracks, Colonial School, Lock up, Catholic Chapel - Margie — Preceding unsigned comment added by Elrebe56 (talk • contribs) 05:00, 3 July 2017 (UTC)

Whether as a cooperative or a conglomerate, it was still the same entity, so I don't think it's "obvious" that separate articles are needed. If the article was sufficiently large it would be appropriate to split it into separate articles, but I don't think it is large enough. The article is 18kb (about 15kb of body text), which is well under WP:SIZESPLIT's "< 40 kB Length alone does not justify division". Mitch Ames (talk) 13:43, 3 October 2017 (UTC)

probably at some later stage the corporate and co-op activities could become daughter articles, though the significant corporate identities owned by Wesfarmers themselves already have articles any structural changes would also need to take into consideration content in those articles. Wiki Club West aka West Australian Branch - linking with Perth Heritage Days 14 - 15 October 2017

There is a challenge to either check, improve existing articles, or create new live articles that relate to topics that tie in with the Perth Heritage Days that are happening on the 14th and 15th October here in Perth.

Midland line boxes

Has anyone noticed the preceeding / following station boxes on the Midland line stations pages (here, here, here and here for example) have errors. Specifically, Redcliffe appears as the termini (in place of Midland), as the following station, and in Redcliffe as the preceeding station?

Malaga railway station

Just found the redirect Malaga railway station, Perth → Public Transport Authority (Western Australia), which seems like a quite useless redirect. Presumably someone thinks the Ellenbrook railway line will have a station at Malaga, Western Australia. Karara, WA & Karara mine

There seems to be two articles about the same topic, Karara mine and Karara, Western Australia. Should these be merged and, if yes, under what title?   • Honestly @Mitch Ames: just be bold with categories with what ever pattern you want, I be working with new editors and such word sleuthing over categories just scares people away from editing, even worse it scares the management even more. As I do more work with them we'll just follow what ever is there, today was a short run to demonstrate the ease of doing the edits to articles and how it can work. Once they have been going at it for a while when the depth and breadth of the knowledge is here we'll need to revisit the categories anyway and it'll be easier when there is more information to draw on. On the template:-

Template:Capital city central business districts of Australia - the Perth link is to the Perth (suburb) article that claims to be about both - the CBD and to the suburb. Museum of Perth

I thought I'd drop a note to let you all know what is taking place. WMAU & WikiClubWest have started working with the Museum of Perth to bring its research content onto Wikipedia. The process has been broken in to segments because of the way they store data and the people we have doing the data transfers.

  1. bring the raw data across from one system
  2. incorporate the references from another system
  3. tidy up the text content.
  4. then source media files
Articles;
  1. expand existing ones
  2. create new ones

It's then rinse and repeat for the next subject area, initially I have been working with the new contributors who are covering different segments of the process to get it under way. There will shortly be a Wikimedian in Residence taking up a position to co-ordinate the work of this and other projects.

We started with streets because of the data is the best structured and easiest to work with, some of the other areas almost ready to follow up with will be buildings, demolished buildings, architects, heritage places, parks & gardens, public artworks. Along the way there will be a number of workshops and other events so watch out for those. I presume item 1 and/or 2 of "creation of lists" accounts for the parenthetical numbers that were the subject of User_talk:Majamop#Parenthetical_numbers_in_List_of_streets_in_Kings_Park_and_West_Perth, and have now appeared in List of streets in Crawley and Nedlands. I suggest that it would be worth adding a note above the table to the effect that "parenthetical numbers are page numbers/footnote numbers/[whatever] in [source that the list came from]", at least until the references can be converted into correctly formatted Wikipedia references, so that the reader has some idea of what those numbers mean.

Ugh, this situation is a bit of a mess. I really think the lists of suburban streets are inherently unencyclopedic and bound to (as Crawley/Nedlands has) get nominated for deletion and ensure a negative first experience for the new editors involved. I know there is a lot of good content on CBD/Northbridge main streets - but the sources exist to genuinely sustain those articles, whereas these lists that are just suburban street naming guides aren't a good use of editors time. All the other things Gnangarra mentioned - buildings, demolished buildings, heritage places, parks and gardens and public artworks are a much, much, much better use of a partnership with the Museum of Perth - you can't go wrong with any of those. Yu do realise that the streets bind all of those other topics together, that street naming is complex urban planning issue with various government authorities issuing different guides on how to name streets. STreet names also reflect historical, political, cultural makeup of suburbs at the time in which the street is created or renamed. These series of complex interactions are best laid out in list articles rather than in individual articles where the whole can be connected in brief. Gnangarra 12:20, 26 May 2018 (UTC)

Well thanks for your help - you hardly know anything about the partnership yet offer some rather unhelpful comments.

The beginning of any project like the collaboration between the Museum of Perth and Wiki Club West is likely to evoke considered opinions about methods and means for new projects. If they are disparaging - it can work both ways, the opinion can provide a perspective on something, that might encourage an appraisal of how to do something a particular way, possible other ways of thinking about resources available, or reflect as much on the person making the claims.

The position of an opinion might be best appraised by asking - where or how that opinion might arise - where does it come from ? I really think the lists of suburban streets are inherently unencylopediac is an opinion from an editor at a stage where something is at the beginning and in particularly sensitive time for all involved. There is no actual proof that this (inherently unencyclopediac) is so - and is simply one editor who chooses to leave an opinion here on the noticeboard, there is no actual allowing the development of the material (there are a few signs that things are at the beginning, where there should be considerable experience of (a) dont bite newcomers (b) be patient etc), or explanation why the opinion exists. (This means someone can prove and show extensive Trove and or Battye, State Records Office or other source - research time to verify that assertion?)

Suburban street naming guides aren't a good use of editors time - ok - please show evidence of actual research time spent on LGA heritage registers, Heritage Council, Landgate, State Records records on this matter please to verify that assertion? The time to clarify street, place or building records for any locality or council areas in Perth at all ?

So with the partnership being developed, where is the expertise of the assertions being made here, and at an AFD come from? It would be very worthwhile to backup the assertions with some form evidence, then it is more useful to editors involved to understand the perceived priorities and mechanics of research, that we seem to not know.   • Land Information Authority Regulations 2007
  • Australian Standard AS/NZS 4819:2011

Then you add to that Emergency services act, various heritage acts, Indigenous heritage and cultural acts, and local government bylaws. Once these have been negotiated the road names in western australia then need to pass through 7 different consultation processes before all this information gets presented to Landgate for approval. When it comes to urban planning road naming is an encyclopaedic topic, what is covered in the lists just outcomes of those processes with the reasonings for each name. WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

Category:Streets in Perth, Western Australia says both that it:

  • is a container category, should contain only subcategories
  • contains "streets in Perth, except for those in the following locations within Perth: Fremantle, Perth CBD"

Given that there are places in Perth (including Perth (suburb)) that are not in Fremantle or the CBD, this category can contain articles, so it ought not be a container category.

Description is wrong - as I added the container tag. It was my intention to identify streets by their suburb, which would be a sub category... I do not think individual streets should be in streets in perth, western australia - as technically that constitutes the whole metropolitan area. JarrahTree 11:49, 31 May 2018 (UTC)
If it's intended to be a container category, then we may end up needing many more subcategories, eg per Category:Streets in Crawley and Nedlands, if there are notable streets elsewhere in the metro area. That might not be a good idea if there are only a few such notable streets. One such subcat would be Category:Streets in Perth (suburb), to include for example Aberdeen Road, Perth, which is in the suburb but not in the CBD.

By most indications most suburbs/localities within the perth metro region contain sufficient notable streets that exist within their boundaries to justify the development of the category this way, and not have aticles in the larger category JarrahTree 12:09, 31 May 2018 (UTC)
Container category is wrong, what it should say is something like "Use a suburb-specific subcategory rather than this category, if such a category exists and the street is entirely within that suburb". But most streets outside of the CBD and Fremantle probably aren't likely to be notable enough for their own article anyway (as opposed to roads, many of which are notable). Would it not be better divided into to LGA's rather than single burb as there will be enough streets within each LGA that are notable to warrant the category, but at burb level many will end up with just one or two if they are lucky, if you look at Bassendean as a burb, you'd get old perth road, west road, lord st, iolanthe, walter road, railway pde, Guildford rd and collier road as an LGA you add Hardey road, Pearson st, Ashfield Pde, and Morley drive where as Eden Hill and Ashfield would have 4 between them which isnt enough for a category. Even Joondalup as an LGA would have enough but the individual burbs would struggle, Even Swan & Stirling would be better though they could have a small subset pockets even then I doubt we'd get 10 or more in those even from places like Guildford, Swan Valley, Balcatta, Innaloo, Osborne Park. Then when you consider that streets are linked to the LGAs history and development as well being something they are responsible for. Gnangarra 15:14, 1 June 2018 (UTC)

Yeah, LGA would probably make more sense as hey are more likely to have enough for a category. We're also starting to get into "what is a street/road/highway" territory... while the distinction is not always well defined, and has little correlation to the suffix in the name, Morley Drive is definitely more of a road than a street (see that article's lead), and is also a highway to the west of Tonkin (in some classification senses) - Evad37 [talk] 00:49, 2 June 2018 (UTC)
Gnangarra has a point, to a point - I think it might vary between LGAs and locality/suburbs - the main reason for wanting to have some distinction made at the top (thanks to Evad for changing it), was so that the category 'streets in Perth' is filled with streets from everywhere, but that there is a distinction as to where in Perth. It can break down lgas into burbs where appropriate, but yeah perth metro, the multi defined perth cbd, perth suburb, and city of perth which is also called Perth. That just brings us back to that poor decision in 2012 to call Perth, WA Perth though I suppose it was better than Perth Australia that was once suggested. Gnangarra 03:34, 2 June 2018 (UTC)

Reference links to State Records Office web site

A little while back the State Records Office of WA moved their archive website, thus breaking all the reference links to the old site from our articles. I've gone through and updated most of those reference links, but there are a few for which I cannot locate the correct page on the new SRO website - mainly because the links look like searches (with many results), rather than specific targets.

Perhaps someone with knowledge of the specific subjects could check the remaining articles and replace those reference links with something suitable.

Was Stirling Highway once known as "Perth – Fremantle Road"?

Is Stirling Highway the "old Perth – Fremantle Road" and "Perth/Fremantle Road" mentioned in List of streets in Crawley and Nedlands? It seems likely, given Stirling Highway § History. If Stirling Highway was once known as the Perth - Fremantle Road, the Stirling Highway article should probably mention that explicitly (with a suitable reference of course) and then of course we'd link to it from List of streets in Crawley and Nedlands. Is that book available online? Does the Trove summary explicitly say that Perth-Fremantle Rd and Stirling Hwy are the same thing? (Perhaps the book describes multiple roads - I don't know, because I haven't read it and don't have immediate access to it.) Mitch Ames (talk) 13:00, 5 June 2018 (UTC)
There were two possible roads known by that name, but only one that was changed to Stirling Highway.
