You can't (in ability terms), you're not an admin, only admins can edit the In the news template. With regard to the general notability though... it's news on the BBC, and there have been reports about it on World Service radio and on some foreign press ([1], [2], [3], [4] etc) too. The BBC also reports on badminton, ice hockey and traditional Gaelic games, but that doesn't make any of those sports internationally interesting or relevant. date format

Its the Date data that you have issue with. I have issue with the date format. I use YYYY-MM-DD, the european way on all my computers and can find stuff extrodinary fast. I wonder if I can set my prefrences here... Probiblty not. Artoftransformation 09:38, 10 November 2007 (UTC)

South America Tab for Current Events Portal

market indices in the sidebar?

Does it make sense to have the market indices in the sidebar? In the absence of a way to dynamically update it, it will always be significantly out-of-date, and it is enough layers of abstraction away from the main page that errors or vandalism may persist for a long time. Since this isn't a financial site, I think we should either pull it out (my preference) or agree on a way to make it dynamically updating and so that edits are only needed to adjust the set of indices. I say pull it! This sidebar has nothing to do with the idea of ITN, as I understand it. It moves us down the slippery slope of trying to compete with real news websites. Removal of tropical cyclone seasons from sidebar

Currently 4 of the 8 "natural disasters" in the ongoing events sidebar are tropical cyclone seasons. Nothing much is going on in 3 of the basins, never mind anything that can be construed as a significant natural disaster. The Atlantic currently has Hurricane Dean, but Hurricane Dean is the disaster not the season. Therefore I propose removing the cyclone seasons from the side-bar; and replace them with individual storms as and when appropriate. If a storm does not have an independent article, we can just link to its section in the seasonal article.

I disagree. They were useful links to the seasons, and it's not easy to see at a glance which basin individual storms belong to, for example Severe Tropical Storm Fitow and Tropical Storm Gil today, the first being a Pacific typhoon, the second a Pacific hurricane. For those watching the CfD discussion on current events categories, my closing decision was keep, but with a recommendation to change the names to Category:2006 current events archives by day and Category:2007 current events archives by day. Proposal for Ongoing Armed Conflicts

How about a start date beside each conflict? It would put the Iraq war in perspective to know the Arab - Israeli conflict has been going on since the 1920 Palestine riots Daddylight 03:04, 12 September 2007 (UTC)

Well, in some/many cases that would be tricky. Since for instance the Arab - Israeli conflict according to the books I read started already around 1850 or so when the first kibbutz's started to violently harassing nearby Palestinian villages. (Don't quote me on the exact year since it was many years since I read those books. And oh, the books I read was written by Jews. I haven't had access to books written by Palestinians yet.) Why is there no Australian news in the news forum? Australia is a continent and yet Britain which is more than 5 times smaller then Australia still gets news is it because nothing is wrong in australia? im curious.

Formula One auto racing - americanisation!

"The FIA fines... Formula One auto racing team..." whilst 'automobile' can be considered correct british english 'auto racing' (and the shortening of automobile to 'auto') is definately a US term. It can be argued that F1 is international (whilst at its core it is essentially european). But there cannot be the arguement that it is more American than British.

• most teams are based in the UK
• there has been only one american driver since 1993, who has recently been fired, during this period there have been loads of british drivers, including a world champion, and the current leader.
• its popularity in the US is far less
• it is only fairly recently there has been a race in the US, which will not be continued from 2008, whilst the UK, i believe, has featured a race since F1's inception.
• the current president of the FIA is british, as is the president of the FOA and FOM, Bernie Eccleston.

let us remember that american is not an international language, so 'its international' is not a valid arguement. These above arguements could be spread to europe (in which case i believe it should be british-eng as the english-language representative of europe), being even stronger. Quality

I think it is about time we discuss the quality of Current events pages. In the last 3 months or so, I have noticed a downfall in the main Current Events page. More and more "less-notable" or highly "local" news seems to be present, obscuring the other news etc. It seems we lack a main-editor that makes proper selections and restyles the reported news items in their proper form. For instance: "The Dutch Cabinet meets to decide whether to hold a referendum on the European Union's Reform Treaty. (BBC)" Now that's cool and all, but who will care about that in 10 years from now? More importantly, the actual outcome of the meeting is nowhere to be found, and the context as to why this is import is lacking as well in this summary. So how do we balance "news" with "events archiving" ??? How do we balance not writing news, but reporting news and how do we balance open editing for all wikipedia users, with properly "editing" the events to get proper articles.

I guess one of the big issues here is that some of the more involved "Current Events" editors in the past seem to be less active now or moved to wikinews and that no one is stepping up to fill the gaps. The other problem is that there is lack of "content guidance" towards the "casual contributor". I'm not very involved here, though i do make the occasional edit, but this seems like issues that need to be fixed. I was thinking that we might ask the Signpost if they would care to drop a note in the next edition, if there are people out there that would like to help improve this situation. Please leave your thoughts and ideas you have on these problems as well, i'd love to think what the other editors think about this. --TheDJ (talk • contribs) 15:37, 25 September 2007 (UTC)

WP:Be bold. Sometimes I filter things, out but it feels a little crass if I don't contribute much. I agree with you, but I still like the mix here and the convenience vs. wading through CNN or ABC.com or whatever. A while ago I proposed that we add section headers like economics, human interest, natural events, etc. It just seems the editorial energy is lacking at the moment. I wouldn't blame WikiNews. But if the current everyday readers put in more effort, we could attract more and maybe more will contribute. (And if too many do, the more politics arise.) Why are all the current event dates protected? I tried to edit the three top ones (September 29, 20 and October 1) but it only lets me look at the source, it says, "This page is currently protected from editing because it is transcluded in the following pages, which are protected with the "cascading" option: Portal:Current events". Drug found in toy rewording?

I think the stanza for the GHB drug found in a toy manufacture should be reworded. The "date rape drug" should be removed or reworded so that it does not seem parents are feeding their children date rape drugs, but a drug that just so happens to used as a date rape drug in completely different circumstances. It sounds appalling if you were the parents ("I gave my kid a toy with a date rape drug in it.") and gives and inappropriate impression. -Kain Nihil 00:20, 11 November 2007 (UTC)

Why Dogs Hump.

Dogs, mostly males, hump others dogs or creatures(people) and sometimes inatimate objects. The question is, why? Most people believe it may be for sexual pleasure, that the dog is horny. But the real reason is to show dominance.

The issue of Kosovo's independence from Serbia, which could be declared any time from Monday (regardless of the EU's attempt to suggest Early next year) is a considerable event that involves a wider audience (US and most EU countries support, Serbia and Russia disprove). Phrasing

I do not feel it is fair to call the protesters in England (in regards to the torch relay) and else where as "anti-China". I am sure most of them don't have anything wrong with the Chinese people (maybe the people in Tibet do, but I don't know that for sure), and it is the ruling party of China that has changed, not the land or ethnicity of the people. It would be more NPOV to state that they were against the policies of the Peoples Republic of China, and not "China" as a whole. So now, China is now split into multiple countries by multiple sovereignties? That's like saying the United States should be split into multiple sovereignties. Or better yet, 50, because after all, China comprises of 56 ethnicities, so China too should be split into 56 states. The PRC is a majority of China. Unless you want it split into 56 parts, that is. I'm sure if someone made fun of, say Californians, or I don't know, people from Massachusetts (lived in both before btw, no offense intended), from another country outside of the US, Americans would see that as making fun of Americans overall. As for policies, in my opinion, from western Media NPR (paraphrased): Tibet is a autonomous region, Tibet is exempt from taxes, 90% of the government's budget is supplied by Chinese. From other western media (quoted from wikipedia page on this): 'Tibetan rioters appeared to be targeting shops and vehicles owned by Han Chinese, the predominant ethnic group in China, and Hui, who are a Muslim minority. According to the BBC and the Wall Street Journal, rioters focused on setting fire to and looting businesses owned by them, before Riot police arrived. From Eastern media (cause that makes SUCH a difference, rolls eyes): rioters injured 623 people including 241 police and armed police and killed 18 others. They also set fire to more than 300 locations, mostly private houses, stores and schools, smashed vehicles and damaged public facilities....I fail to see how that's "repressive" policies (although I acknowledge anything done wrong previously, no country is free from mistakes, see American treatment of Native Americans/republic of Hawaii). If the Tibetans riot (which btw, Pro-tibet people are SUPPORTING them rioting cause your saying that it was wrong to send in riot police), why the heck is sending in riot police wrong? It's the same thing as rabble rousing, overall, the reason there is "pro-tibet" is the same reason there is "anti-china", its because of economic and discriminatory reasons. It'll probably be changed though, because its seen as "not neutral" (and I agree it isn't, but still, pro-tibet is a wide term too, some protesters, I know 100%, do it not because of Tibet, but because they see it as another chance to be anti-china (predominantly those paid by the US government/other groups), so there are people on both sides, perhaps include both "pro-tibet" and "anti-china" would be more accurate.) and there is no proof of my opinion anyway (cause you can't tell what others think) Noian (talk) 17:37, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

What should we do if the local date is different from the UTC date? In specific, I have a tiger attack at Portal:Current_events/2007_December_26, which I put on Wednesday, because the news broken on Wednesday, UTC. Bull, we report on most of the grand slam tennis tournaments as well (for which you could say the same). A week or two ago we reported on the European championship of Handball (or something else vague). This is the most important event in american football (in the only country practicing it seriously), and as such it is on par with a "world tournament", and we always mention world tournaments of the larger sports as well. Issues with Current Events

There are still some issues with the system here. Perhaps it is time that we appointed a "semi-official" editor that takes care of things ?

• The sidebar is irregularly updated.
• Improper archiving of months (The sidebar has not been archived since March 2007)
• Little supervision on archived stories. ideally someone should check the RecentChanges links every week or so.
• We have "future events" of some importance on "month in year" pages that get removed without the stories being present in archives. Why not check that they are added?
• bad prose
• inconsistent reporting on events between 2 or 3 days. Sometimes as an event develops its original story should be revised or more often rewritten.

In my experience Portal:Current events is lacking in many of these. I see two ways to deal with it.

1. Name a group of editors that take care of this. (revive Wikipedia:WikiProject Current events.
2. Name an editor that has seniority and responsibility to look after these issues much as with a newspaper or website.

Repeated vandalism

The headlines has recently vandalised by an unnamed editor at 82.114.160.32. She has repeatedly redirected the external news article links to a page that contains, I'm guessing, some great message. Suggestion: Add a section with regular updates from Wikinews, using the new bot, User:Wikinews Importer Bot. Check this out Portal:Current events/Wikinews, which updates items from the Current Day of the Main Page of Wikinews, and brings them over to a Wikipedia page. All that would be required would be to have a section like "Today's latest articles from Wikinews", and then just transclude {{Portal:Current events/Wikinews}} in the section itself. Thoughts? I removed it, because had similar feelings. I have also been playing a little bit with alternate ideas on the inclusion of the Wikinews headlines. User:TheDJ/Sandbox2 shows several ways in which we could group wikinews and CE items by day, but i'm not really sure I like any of them. I feel it makes the page too messy and I fear people won't be so diligent in keeping CE up to date once this is implemented. The BEST solution in my eyes is something like what Potatoswatter proposed. It would be ideal, if the bot could add the newest items since it last visit, to the top of todays CE subpage. Then users should be free to edit or remove the bot-added headline as they see fit (wikilinking, better or additional sourcing etc, titles that read less like newsheadlines and more like CE newsitems [generally a bit longer]). It has the benefit of fully keeping in line with the idea behind the CE portal (wikilinking to Wikipedia articles that are currently newstopics), while also giving a lot of visibility to Wikinews and as an extra benefit of reminding editors which topics still need to be covered for today. --TheDJ (talk • contribs) 00:50, 16 January 2008 (UTC)

proposal for subportals

I think we can conclude that at the moment, especially the regional subportals have sort of failed... They are edited so little that they confuse people more than that they help editors with current events or history track keeping. I'm considering running an MfD for these subportals and then putting them in "cold-storage". Sports (and at times Technology) seems to be properly maintained and so is the Southeast Asia news portal (at least for a while now) and they can happily stay. I noticed that the way the day of the week on each day's events is displayed has been changed. Since (in my opinion) it looks much worse, I assume it was some sort of vandalism, but I can't figure out how it was changed. Instead of appearing pretty much as

It's fixed again, but the weird thing is that I have no idea what was causing it. I looked trough all the templates that this header uses and none of them were changed. Taiwan-China conflict

Why isnt taiwan-china conflict ever mentioned in the "ongoing events" section?

This conflict has been undergoing for decades now, and tensions has been steadily escalating with now over 1000 missles from china aimed at taiwan, and taiwan's persistance in not yielding to china's and the china-led world's suppression.

The yearly battles of taiwan against china and china-led world to get into UN, WHO and the constant struggle to get recognized and protected by the international world goverments before it gets eleminated by china.

Spitzer scandal

Someone wrote, for March 10, 2008: "Governor of New York Eliot Spitzer admits to using the services of an international online prostitution ring." He made no such admission and to state that he did is potentially libelous (libel per se, specifically, or falsely claiming someone has admitted to a crime). If you read Spitzer's very short public statement, there is no admission beyond remarks like, "I have acted in a way that violates my obligations to my family and violates my, or any, sense of right and wrong." This is a far cry from admitting to using a prostitute. While many news sources have revealed Spitzer is the so-called "Client Number Nine," it's a fabrication to leap from that to saying that Spitzer admitted something. Exceeds all digital stroage

There is still room on MY HARD DISK. This is just patently obsurd. There is a full pallet of 500GB drives at Costco, unsold. At least 120 of them, so thats about 60 Tera-bytes, or 60,000 bytes. Hmmm seems like someone slipped a prefix or two. ( a 1024 Terabytes is a Petabyte. What is their definition of a billion? Auto-date

I've tweaked the portal to auto-update with the day's date. A long time ago this was frowned on because the lack of news for a new date made it look "wrong"; now we seem to be updating the new day manually before there's news anyway. I think it's clearer to have an empty box than not to have a box at all; fixing the template to do it automatically (while still having the individual days be fixed, looks like LDBot has got that one under control though) should make the changelog for the portal a lot clearer. I don't have a problem with this, but I note that half the world (and more than half the population) starts the new day before GMT does. If a major event happens in the morning in that half of the world, we should manually update the portal so the news for the day appears even though the GMT date is still the day before.-gadfium 18:44, 14 March 2008 (UTC)

David Alexander Paterson (born May 20, 1954) is an American politician and the current Governor of New York. He is the first African American and the first legally blind person to hold this position. I think it should be noted in the Current events that he is legally blind, i think it is much more noteworthy than the fact that he is black... honestly in this day and age only racest people care about the color of one's skin! The solving of the Road coloring problem would probably be worthy of putting in the ITN section of the main page, except that it was solved in September 2007, and reported in the media at least as long ago as 8 February, according to that article. I think that everyone wants to vote, some people don't do it because they don't really care of who is going to be our new president. I personally think that voting is really fun but the waiting lines could be way too long. Some people get ready to vote but they don't really want to wait in the long line to vote. ITN reform

The "In The News" section on the main page is broken. Whereas all of the other sections, like Featured Articles, get updated every day, ITN gets two or three new news items a week. The same picture of Fernando Lugo has been on ITN since April 20, almost two weeks. In addition, deaths like Arthur C. Clarke don't make it to the main page, nor items of "local" interest like the London mayoral election. I think we need to make ITN more open and dynamic. Disappearing items

By the time I followed a story link and read the article, then returned to the Current Events portal page, the link to the story had disappeared. The history page does not show the change or how it was accomplished.

Could it be that the link was excised by partisan interests because the article reported Hezbullah getting nerve gas from Korea through Syria?

How can the page be protected from partisan/politically motivated edits?

Makes one wonder the value (or lack thereof) of this wiki page.

Is there a ban on "regional" news?

Somebody at User talk:87.198.133.62 has been erasing a story I put up at Portal:Current events/2008 July 18 about a recently released federal report alleged cruel and unusual punishment taking place at the Cook County Jail. The user erased the story saying it was "regional" news and made reference to some rules. I reverted his edit once and left a message telling him not to do it again or else I would consider it vandalism. He erased the story again and I reverted and left a vandalism warning on his talk page. He's since erased the story again and just left a message on my talk page saying I was breaking the rules and not to threaten him. First, I don't think this is regional news. I found the story in the New York Times and I got there from the main page of Google News. The story was right at the top. The rest is history. There I was taught the traditional African art of cow horn and ivory carving, a skill which enable me to be self-employed and employer. Since retiring, I am devoting the remaining days of my life to travel and photography. revisiting some of the beautiful places I’’ve been blessed to visit during my youth.

See WP:WARN for relevant warning templates, in this case Page blanking, removal of content. Cirt added subst:uw-delete1, and I've added subst:uw-delete2. After blatant vandalism (the person is clearly violating policy and not discussing it) after a level 4 warning, you can report it to WP:AIV, or to WP:ANI if it's not an emergency.

I've looked over the news item and reverted, with a few minor wording changes. As mentioned in my edit summary, it's of definitely international interest, reported in mainstream news sources, and worded in an NPOV way that reflects the main thrust of what the sources say. Inactive Regional News section

Many of the Regional news page are inactive and haven't had any news for the past year, except for links to Wikinews (Africa, China, Europe, Israel, Latin America, Middle East, Poland, Asia, United Kingdom and United States). Argentina's President has announced her intention to nationalize all private pensions in the country. Recent changes to format of current events page (Wikinews)

I see that we now get the Wikinews page for each day in addition to the current events. I have to say I'm not crazy about that. What passes for news there doesn't seem to be up to the same standard as the current events page itself. Also, it looks like updates to the current events page take several minutes to show up. Personally, I agree with both the above. Those sections take up a lot of room, and a fair number of the articles are questionable for inclusion here. But Wikinews is a sister project, and it does some very good articles; perhaps they deserve a wide audience. Maybe a tighter selection: two or three a day? Or a smaller font? Or ticker-tape marquis rolling like on the bottom of CNN? Or, in one way or another, enable us to edit the headlines from here for relevance/inclusion (micronation news on WP:CE? seems inappropriate to me), geographical neutrality ("Fear and loathing on the campaign trail, September 2008" -- it'd be kind of nice to know exactly which country's campaign we're talking about), style/grammar ("Medical helicopter crashes near Chicago, Illinois killing four" -- sofixit and all that, but in this case, I don't know how), etc. Aille (talk) 21:09, 21 October 2008 (UTC)

I would be more careful about taking WN off. If we take it off, we should always give reference to a corresponding article in a CE messages. Just to make sure any user can see a bigger picture than one or two sentences in CE. Maybe we should change the CE rules than, adding #7, 'if possible, give a link to an article about the event'. I, for one, love the format the way it is. Wikinews articles seem to complement the Portal:Current Events blurbs quite nicely, and I don't think they take up too much room at all. The "Fear and Loathing" article title you are referring to references Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72, so that's why it isn't geographically neutral. The grammar on the article blurbs is often worse than what you find on Wikinews, from my experience. How about going back to the old format of having Wikinews articles at the bottom. I suppose that Wikinews does have a different scope to the current events portal, so all these links don't seem appropriate below the date page. Actually, I hadn't realized the Wikinews stories didn't get transferred to the 'permanent' pages (e.g., November 2008). Seeing as how they're only a temporary thing, up there for a week while they're hot, I'd like to temper my criticisms above. I'm not even going to repeat my petty suggestion that a smaller font be used for the Wikinews stories: with the length of the sidebar, the portal needs every column inch it can get. And, although the wording of one of the links ("Gay marriage banned in three states") still jars with our aspirations to a geographic neutral POV, and I'm not sure about the I-Phone story (even after reading it), those are the only quibbles I can see with the current selection. Vandalism Outside the Editable areas?

How are we suppose to remove any Vandalism that someone places outside the standard "day" areas that can be edited? Currently there is some right above the latest day and I don't know how to remove it as the page is semi-protected. On the WP main page, the headline on Mumbai reads that 900 have been injured. This is obviously far too high and appears nowhere in the linked articles. Current Events/Sports: Splitting It In Half

I would like to suggest dividing the Current Events/Sports portal into two seperate yet distinctive sections. The current portal would be renamed "Portal:Current events/International Sport" and a second portal be started called "Portal:Current Events/North American Sports" While the current portal would be limited to Football (soccer), Athletics (Track and Field) in places outside North America, the North American sports portal would contain sports and leagues that are more relevant to fans in the USA, Canada and Mexico, the three major countries, such as Major League Baseball, NASCAR, the NFL, the NBA, the NHL, NASCAR, MLS/CONFACAC/FMF among others. We won't try to be a daily newspaper, but rather a resource to place information on sports relevant to that region, with an occasional international event of a sport that North America plays from time to time in the International section (such as Super Bowls and the forthcoming World Baseball Classic.) The only international stories that would be crossed over into the North American pages would be tennis and golf grand slam events, the Olympics and World Cup Soccer for example, as they have implications for countries involved. You didn't read through that thoroughly. I said that several events (Tennis and Golf Grand Slams, World Baseball Classic, Super Bowls, World Cup Soccer, Olympics for example) would be crossed over between the two. Not entire seasons (except for noatble items such as coaching and managerial dismissals, opening games in MLB, NHL, NBA, weekly Top 25 American college football and NFL seasons,) in other words much of the stuff usually covered within the current portal but just limited to North American Sports. I'm not trying to be objective, each month there's over 100 KB used on a monthly basis within the portal in question. By splitting it in two (North American and World) and crossing over into with Super Bowl, World Cup, Olympics the tennis and golf "Grand Slam" events as well as the forthcoming World Baseball Classic with both portals in question, we would still cover recaps. As for the other stuff, MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL, MLS/CONCACAF/FMF, CFL, NCAA would get a seperate page based as "Portal:Current events/Sports/North America", and there would be a redirect on the World page reading "For North American sports, see 'Portal:Current Events/Sports/North America'" with a link therein. Again, this is not a discussion about quality over quanity, as stated in the P:CE/S discussion pages. It's how the seasons are set up. NFL games are weekly, while the NBA and the NHL plays two, maybe three games per week and their regular season (and the first two rounds of the playoffs) take forever, hence for the first two rounds, only elimination games are noted. I've added him to Recent deaths. I've also added "Edit sidebar" links to every section of the sidebar, though you have to scroll to the section you want to edit.

If you go to "My preferences", the Editing tab, then make sure "Enable section editing via [edit] links" box is checked (and click Save), you should have normal edit links as well in Recent deaths. But I created a new test account, and while that box is checked by default, the other links don't appear. The sidebar is editable though, not semi-protected, so I can't explain why you (or my new test account) couldn't see the other edit links. MeekSaffron (talk) 15:26, 10 January 2009 (UTC)

Russia–Ukraine gas disputes

I propose changing the name in the "in the news' section from "Russian state-controlled supplier Gazprom cuts off gas deliveries to Ukraine, with several European countries reporting a fall in supplies." to "Russia–Ukraine gas dispute leads to fall in supplies to several European countries". The current wording does not describes all aspects of the situation, or describes the main of them adequately.

1. "State controlled" is not a universally supported claim, as the Gazprom company has multiple owners, incl. private shareholders, which quite obviously "control" it in some form, and

I.e. why not, for example, a pro-Gazprom GProm is made ... to cut off gas by Ukrainian actions, and not pro-Gazprom Ukraine ... stops transporting GP gas to EU, not even a neutral Russia–Ukraine gas dispute leads to stop of gas deliveries to Europe. Why do we choose an anti-Gazprom option? Because they are bad?

By making Gasprom an actor in this sentence and Ukraine a recipient of an action we clearly admit we hold Gazprom responsible for the mess, which is a clear POV and must be corrected. FeelSunny (talk) 13:55, 15 January 2009 (UTC)

Why are my edits still invisible?

Frequently I find that my edits are not visible.

Yes, I know that sometimes they get deleted as soon as I put them on.

And sometimes I forget to 'refresh' (F5).

But more often, the edits are still there (if I try to re-edit, or look under 'History' and 'Compare'), but are not visible

What can the explanation be?

UN retraction?

I just saw the statements that the UN had withdrew claims that Israel bombed a UN facility during the Gaza Conflict, as reported by the Israeli media. I just checked the UN official website (un.org) and the American State Department (state.gov), and neither seem to confirm this report. I suggest this be removed, as there are no third-party references to this controversial (and, effectively, false) statement. How about "Australia's worst ever bushfires obliterate two towns and leave over a hundred dead."? "Major property damage" is what we get most summers. This is far beyond that. Yes, Im only 12, but I've been very concerned about my weight lately. my friends all tell me that im sooo crazy for calling myself fat, and my parents think that im too skinny. i was overweight for years with baby fat, but now ive stretched and ive been the same weight since about 4th grade.

What is the threshold after which we publish the news about some deadly event in this section? Is it related to the number of casualties, the oddness of event/accident, or something else? It starts to look like an obituary today. "Claims"?

Why is the word "claims" used for the following news item:

1. China claims it has artificially produced snowfall by cloud seeding to ease drought. (AP via Google News)

I put forth the opinion that it sounds a little like anti-Chinese bias. Whatever other countries do is accepted automatically, but what China does, the validity is questioned by default.

Take the following for instance:

1. A Columbian mammoth is discovered in the La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles, California. (Reuters)

Why isn't it:

1. America claims that a Columbian mammoth is discovered in the La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles, California. (Reuters)

Or:

1. Japan's National Astronomical Observatory completes the first topographic map of the Moon. (Daily Yomiuri)

If we automatically accept an assertion by America or Japan that they have made some advances, should we not treat China the same way? In a word yes. Its not a slur against China, it's just that as a Communist state they don't allow as many freedoms as democratic states. The results is that a lot of info passes through the state and is liable to be doctored for propaganda purposes (for case in point see China GDP, which many feel the government is underestimating in order to alleviate foreign concern that the economy could overheat) --Daviessimo (talk) 07:34, 26 February 2009 (UTC)

1. Although the settlement may contain a statement that the defendant, Pfizer, does not admit to wrongdoing, the agreement to pay damages typically removes any need for "alleged".
2. "Alleged" is more often used on the other side of the equation, as in, "the alleged murderer was indicted ", or, " US pharmaceutical company Pfizer allegedly ran experimental drug tests on children without Nigerian government approval."

I tried raising this on the main page errors reporting system but it was ignored. But the Democratic Front for the Re-unification of the Fatherland is not a "party", as it currently says on the main page. It is a united front consisted of three parties. There are only a few admins who regularly update ITN, but it's more which news items of international scope/interest are sufficiently updated (5-6 referenced sentences or so). It's more often the disasters and depressing news than breakthroughs in peace or science. Or that's how it seems, anyhow. Please, remove the link toward Swine influenza from the front page. The article Swine influenza is about pigs flu only (which means ALL kinds of influenza affecting pigs, how farmer keep their pigs alives, etc), while 2009 swine influenza outbreak is about the current human influenza outbreak (H1N1).

Since the 2 links are in the front page, well intentionned users are misleadingly adding informations into the TWO articles, without noticing the difference. Raise the bar

In my opinion, this page has had too much hard news such as crimes, arrests, accidents, and natural disasters. Instead of such unusual stuff, we need to pick more realistic news. The history we write should make us look as good as we really are. For example, the winners of Dancing with the Stars are valid news. There’s plenty of civilized news out there. The papers have been going broke from following police cars and ambulances because hard news is not only stressful too much of it is actually boring. You may well be right that such vaccines regularly make it to this stage, and the real news will be if the human trials are deemed successful and it goes on to seek FDA approval or similar. Added "Health/Medicine" to 'Ongoing Events' sidebar

I did try to find out when the 2009 pandemic went off the sidebar, and what conversation it generated, but couldn't find it (I'm sure it is obvious, but before you flame, remember, those of us that don't spend weekly amounts of time here can't be expected to remember the 1001 places that Wikipedia places things). Anyway.

I've been very bold, or for me at least, it is very bold. I put in a new section to the 'Ongoing Events' sidebar, and included both the H1N1 and H5N1 flus. These are not finished events, and they do generate weekly/monthly international news articles.

I would state the merits of the created section, in that not only can it be used for disease outbreaks, but also any on-going news stories that span an amount of time (seperation of co-joined triplets, pharmaceutical scam causing deaths, etc. for some 'made-up' examples).

I'm sure other items can be added now, but I wanted to put the flus back on the radar first. I actually have used the Wikipedia 'Ongoing Events' section to quickly get to the pandemic news, which I watch regularly, as it pertains to my job (business continuity). Accident on Autobahn

This incident made the morning news here, on the West Coast of the US; a 259-car pile-up is quite a big accident. This is also notable because when it rains, the Autobahn enforces a 120-km/hour speed limit, which should have been in place; will this accident lead to the speed being reduced further during rainstorms? The death of Corazon Aquino has been added to Portal:Current events/2009 August 1 twice. I have removed it twice, because the guideline above the edit box explicitly states: "Do not list the ordinary deaths of prominent persons here. That's what recent deaths is for. Exceptions to this rule are made for persons of extreme prominence, such as Ronald Reagan, John Paul II, or the Queen Mother." While Aquino was a prominent person and I can see why her death is listed on ITN, I do not see how she was a person "of extreme prominence". Photo next to news item?

We've received an email (m:OTRS ticket:2009081310032348) complaining about the photo not always being next to the correct item, e.g. currently the photo of Rafael Correa is next to "After 15 years in hiding, Grégoire Ndahimana is arrested in North Kivu for the alleged murder of 2,000 Tutsi civilians during the Rwandan Genocide." and since not everyone will read all the news items to see "(pictured)" lower down, it's a rather nasty thing to do to whoever is in the photo.

ACLU

I am not sure if this is where I need to be but in terms of the news of today by Jon Scott and Jane Skinner I am furious about what the ACLU is doing to the Principal and coach for saying a short prayer to thank contributors for helpiong their school athletic programs.Can't the right people do something to this organization for taking prayer too far and taking prayer out of our whole society??

Can't the AmericanPeople ( I mean legal Americans born and raised in the US) see what is happening to our nation and society by taking GOD out of everything we use to stand for. Compare my generaton and my parents generation (20's and 40's) then, and what the hell is happening now because of all of this. In school back in the 40's and 50's we all stood and pledged to the flag first in front of our school and then went into class and prayed the Lord's Prayer and then began what was a good day in school learning and starting the day with a good attitude and fewer problems etc. I can't believe that people don't see things are so out of control because the ACLU and people who don't have anything better to do, have to change things in a very NEGATIVE way?? Lets all go back to the 30's and 40's all before this computer world came to fuition and try to see how things were run then and how things are run now.

There are two green boxes for September 7, 2009 (2009-09-07) (Monday). Their edit links leads to the same page. However, one of the boxes has four items and the other is empty. Furthermore, if you click the edit link, the four items do not appear, the list is empty. I clicked purge, but that did not help. Bosavi Wolly Rat

Is there really no other picture that can be used for today's news? Posting a domestic Rattus norvegicus to represent a new Mallomys is rather cringeworthy. "Rat" is a very broad term referring to many groups of unrelated medium-sized rodents. This implies that the picture has anything to do with the animal, but, although both murines, the only real connection is that someone used a similar term for the two. There have been a lot of these on P:CE lately, most of whom are nowhere near as prominent as the exceptions listed in the edit notice which specifically says "Do not report deaths of prominent persons here. My own opinion is that sources which show bias may be acceptable in this current events page, but efforts should be made firstly to find an impartial source, but in the absence of that to also find a source which gives a contrary opinion. Formatting of source names

Reading through the page, I noticed that some sources are in italics and others aren't - but it doesn't seem to be consistent. Movie releases

Does the release of a single movie (the 2010 version of Nightmare on Elm Street) deserve a mention here? Where do we draw the line? Every movie released in the world in the upcoming future? For the record, I added the entry in question. I have no idea how often this type of story has been added in the past (I've only been active in CE for about a month), but I think around 3-5 movie releases a year should be listed. My reasoning is as follows: 1) there is no obvious reason to exclude entertainment stories. 2) The release of a major movie is a significant entertainment story. 3) Modern movie releases are international events in that the same movie is released in many countries on the same date.

I would draw the line on movies that are both 1) highly anticipated and 2) internationally released. New TV shows are unlikely to ever meet both criteria, although the final episode of extremely popular shows may occasionally qualify. --ThaddeusB (talk) 00:10, 1 May 2010 (UTC)

Iraq War

I'm not sure that there was a Declaration of War as much as a Joint_Resolution_to_Authorize_the_Use_of_United_States_Armed_Forces_Against_Iraq where congress authorized the use of Armed Forces by the Executive Branch. If a consensus is reached that there are no ongoing conflicts worthy of the war title then we should be sure that the Iraq_War page reflects that. We might also consider the 2003_Mission_Accomplished_Speech marked the end of the war. ((This is my first comment, I hope that I did things the right way.)) Nordy (talk) 17:07, 22 June 2010 (UTC)

Asteroid occultation

Upcoming event:

At 21:57 UT, on Thursday, July 8, 2010, the 50 km wide asteroid 472 Roma will occult the star Delta Ophiuchi in an event lasting about five seconds. The occultation path will cross central Europe along a band running through Stockholm, Copenhagen, Bremen, Nantes and Bilbao. This will be the only asteroid occultation event visible to the naked eye during the 21st century.

Categorizing of Current Events portals

In case you guys haven't noticed, I took initiative yesterday, and divided each day's CE portals into categories.

The reason why I did it was because I believe the old system was way too disorganized, and as a news (or current events, if you prefer) aggregator of sorts, we need to be more organized.

My Proposal

For good measure, I'm including my criteria for the categories

• Current Events: news of significant impact or importance on that day
• Science: news related to science and environment, but not significant enough for the CE category
• Politics and Elections (or simply Politics, if there are no elections that day): All political stories, except those that are really significant, and all election stories.
• Sports: All sports stories
• Arts and Entertainment: All arts and entertainment stories.

Also, while there were reverts before, I have talked to some of those people, and they have come onboard to help change the style. I also have to point out that at this point, the few reverts are coming from a few people, which implies acceptance, IMO. Finally, the "reverts" you mentioned, 94.212.31.237, are yours, so please stop misrepresenting them as some part of a greater effort to revert the changes. You're contradicting yourself here. First you say that you have talked to people that were reverted, then you go on to talk about a "few reverts ... from a few people", and then you somehow conclude that the reverts are mine. It's one way or the other. And if consensus doesn't go my way, fine, that's part of life, but you didn't even bother to find consensus. The first link you posted was a revert that someone else did to your revert. The second one was a revert I made on another user, who I have since talked to. He has since proposed changes to my system, which means he accepts my system in principle. You are still misrepresenting your links as a part of a wider effort to oppose this proposal. Another editor who disagrees with the new formatting gets reverted (twice). This is starting to look like silencing the critics. When will you accept that there is no consensus yet? I am against this proposal there isnt enough events to fill the cats, and I feel it is unneeded and what goes into what Cat can be argued about too much. FYI too a proposal should not go into effect until a consensus can be reached. - Knowledgekid87 (talk) 19:54, 7 July 2010 (UTC)

I believe we need to have a test case, just to see the improvements. Why not allow a trial run? Also, we are talking about very general categories here, anything to sort out the mess of news that appeared here before. I will admit that we need to settle what goes into what cats, but then, some are no-brainers. This is why we need to develop rules, and have trial runs, instead of quashing the idea at first sight. Yes, there may be arguments, but those can be ironed out, and we will iron them out here. Nothing is easy, and I did not expect this to be. However, this "difficulty" is really not a reason for us to back away from this proposal (I would dare say it's a pathetic reason, but I will AGF.)

The section "Current events", and even sometimes "Other current events" (I have removed some of those already), within a page named "Current events" makes it really difficult to understand what topics to put in which sections. Aren't the topics included within the section "Armed conflicts and incidents", "Politics", etc. also current events by virtue of being included in a page named "Current events"? I am afraid this makes me think of the famous categorizing of animals, in "a certain Chinese encyclopedia called the Heavenly Emporium of Benevolent Knowledge", into

"(a) those that belong to the emperor; (b) embalmed ones; (c) those that are trained; (d) suckling pigs; (e) mermaids; (f) fabulous ones; (g) stray dogs; (h) those that are included in this classification; (i) those that tremble as if they were mad; (j) innumerable ones; (k) those drawn with a very fine camel's-hair brush; (l) etcetera; (m) those that have just broken the flower vase; (n) those that at a distance resemble flies." (see Celestial Emporium of Benevolent Knowledge's Taxonomy)

My thoughts exactly, Ed. Clear-cut divisions are impossible here, so imo it's best not to attempt it in the first place. Most economic items are also political (Deepwater Horizon), almost every armed conflict is political. For two proposed headers, we've already got subpages (Sports and Science and technology). And then there are headers like "Current events", "Major current events" and "Other current events" within a page named "Current events", as you describe. Despite all the good intentions of the creators (of which I am convinced, even if it hasn't come across that way), I believe that the structure creates more chaos and confusion than it solves. 94.212.31.237 (talk) 18:47, 9 July 2010 (UTC)

Like I said earlier, to back down because of the potential for arguments on which section we place the newsline in is a rather pathetic excuse to end this experiment. I will not speak for everyone here, but to be brutally honest (and honesty is the best medicine, IMHO), I am rather tired of the unorganized nature of the daily CE portals of the past. This issue can easily be resolved via some form of MOS or something (and I resent the assertions by Edcolins that an MOS is equivalent to the "book" described by a discredited essay of questionable reliability). The new format needs to be an improvement on the old one. If it's not (and I feel that way), we've got every reason to end the experiment. I agree with you that the pages are chaotic and unorganized. Every single new idea includes changes. Rarely do we see ideas so workable that it is implemented without amendments or reworks. In this case, can we at least make an effort to iron out the differences? I can see you have ideas on how to improve the cats. Why don't we work together on this issue? Also, newsworthiness is such a nebulous concept that even if we were to "raise the bar", as you have said, it would provoke a lot of oppositions, certainly a lot more opposition than categorizing, IMO. Well I backed down and am letting it run its course and I have even come to see the good intentions by the creator here, however I contune to be confused. My biggest problem with this now is that the categories contune to be changed, one point its called law, then law and crime, one minnute this is in this section, the next it is in this one. Okay here is my input on the criteria for the categories:

• "Current Events: news of significant impact or importance on that day."

Important current events are featured on the main page usually and a 2nd criteria would need to be put in place on what to call impotant enough for this section.

• "Science: news related to science and environment, but not significant enough for the CE category."

I have no problem with a science section however this can be mixed up with politics such as global warming, an example of an event falling into two sections.

• "Politics and Elections (or simply Politics, if there are no elections that day): All political stories, except those that are really significant, and all election stories."

Politics can involve and revolve just about any subject.

• "Sports: All sports stories"

Sports can go along with entertainment other than that I see no problem here

• "Arts and Entertainment: All arts and entertainment stories."

Again no problem here the conflict I see is Entertainment and sports

I understand, and that is why we need some ground rules. Now, with politics, we can focus on, say, elected officials, political scandals, legislations, and those kinds of things. Proposals to Categorize the Current events portal

I have taken the liberty to put here the various proposals to categorize the newslines in this portal

Proposal by User:Gregcaletta Gregcaletta has proposed the following categories:

1. Violent incidents
2. Weather and environmental incidents
3. Law and politics
4. Business and economy
5. Science
6. Arts and entertainment (or "arts and popular culture" or "arts and celebrity culture".)
7. Sport
8. Other events

Proposal by User:Kiteinthewind I am proposing the following categories, with guidelines as to which stories will qualify for inclusion in that category.

1. Major events- Events so major (such as the BP Oil Spill) that it deserves a separate coverage.
2. Arts and entertainment (or Arts and Culture)- Same as Gregcaletta's similarly named category. Mainly covering arts and entertainment-related stories. When a celebrity (Mel Gibson, Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, etc.) is on the wrong side of the law, the story will go in this category, not the law category below.
3. Armed conflicts and incidents- Name change on Gregcaletta's "Violent incidents" category. Covering stories of war and violent incidents that are not related to wars (in a proper sense), such as terrorist attacks, school shootings, etc.
4. Business and Economy- Same as Gregcaletta's similarly named category. Standard business news and news about the economy.
5. Politics and Elections (or Politics, when there are no elections)- Separating Gregcaletta's "Law and politics" category into a politics section, and a law section. This will cover political stories, as we normally see it in the news, such as new legislations being passed by lawmakers, politician scandals, etc. Will include election results, when there are election results to be reported on.
6. Law- Again, separating Gregcaletta's "Law and politics" category into a politics section, and a law section. Will cover stories related to law and order (obvious reason why I did not use that term as the title for this category). Will cover crime stories, and court stories.
7. Science- Same as Gregcaletta's similarly named category. Everything science, technology, and weather.
8. Sports- Same as Gregcaletta's similarly named category. Self-explanatory as to what will go in here.

Proposal by User:Passionless Passionless has taken another approach in the categorizing of stories. He is proposing that we categorize instead by continents, with the big, transcending continent, stories being categorized as "World" stories. There will also be a Science category, and entertainment category.

Comments regarding all proposals: Please don't use "Major events" or "Current events" as cat. headings. Everything on Portal: Current events should be major current events to start with. Otherwise, it won't be on the page. If you think the BP oil spill should have its separate coverage (I don't think so, though, at least not anymore. Better under "Environment" with weather-related stories.), then maybe the cat. heading should be "BP Oil Spill". --PFHLai (talk) 13:16, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
