Christmas in the news

Christmas should/should not be a news item in Current Events. Discuss. It was added in the Dec 25 2012 current events page, whereas the policy in the past has been to not include yearly holidays. Linkminer (talk) 07:13, 27 December 2012 (UTC)

Most news outlets report events such as the Queen's Speech and the Pope's Christmas address so in that respect it seems fine to mention Christmas. It's posibly not strictly correct to say Christmas is celebrated by Christians throughout the world though as some branches of Christianity celebrate it on 7 January. Paul MacDermott (talk) 13:18, 27 December 2012 (UTC)
There should be a page for guidelines regarding recurring items in Portal:Current events/Inclusion, corresponding to the Wikipedia:In the news/Recurring items, but I didn't find any. Does anyone know if there are such guidelines anywhere? Mikael Häggström (talk) 20:12, 28 December 2012 (UTC)

Accessibility of sub-headings

The sections of this portal use semicolons to crate the visual appearance of sub-headings, rather than the "==" type wikimarkup which creates proper HTML headings (they actually create an incomplete definition list). This is against the WCAG web accessibility guidelines to which we are supposed to adhere. How might we use the proper markup? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 23:29, 28 December 2012 (UTC)

Headings significantly aid navigation for screen reader users like myself, so it would be better if the page used proper heading wiki-markup. Graham87 05:23, 29 December 2012 (UTC)

Edit request on 18 February 2013

Re top item ("The Women's Cricket World Cup concludes with Australia defeating the West Indies in the final."), this can be improved to: The 10th Women's Cricket World Cup final ends with Australia defeating the West Indies by 114 runs to become six-time winners.

The picture next to it should be moved down to the meteor item, the end of which can be shortened by moving the "broken glass" reference, becoming "In central Russia, shock waves from a meteor (pictured)—the largest recorded object encountered by Earth since 1908—cause widespread broken glass to injure more than 1,000 people."

Too long entries

I shortened several entries in Portal:Current events/2013 June 14 substantially, because I found them way too long. I don't think Portal:Current events should be a dump of text related to events of insufficient wp:Notability to have an own Wikipedia article. On the other hand, if a topic is of enough notability, all those details (such as in this case, the gunman being barefoot) are better written in those individual Wikipedia articles instead, and having a link to those articles in Portal:Current events. Event on 10 July 2013-Mongolian President Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj was sworn into office in front of public 1st time

Can this event be added to wikinews of today? On 10 July 2013 Mongolian President Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj was sworn into office for his second term as President of Mongolia in front of Chinggis Khaan (also referred as Genghis Khan) monument and public on Sükhbaatar Square a few minutes ago. This is the first time Mongolian presidential oath took place in front of public.[1][2]

Lickspittles, all of us

So we're going along with the tabloids in making a big deal of this birth in what is A Very Ordinary Family that is the centrepiece of symbolic wealth and power through inheritance.

OK ... embarrassing and disappointing. Americans go along with this too? Tony (talk) 03:44, 23 July 2013 (UTC)

I would like to second this opinion. It is unfair to report so many royal births, deaths, coronations, abdications, but not actual news like royal nipslips, drinking and drug problems, or other personal issues in which people (tabloids) are equally interested. But seriously, the birth of this baby is is never going to affect anyone (to count as news), and knowing about it does not count as encyclopedic knowledge.Xullius (talk) 00:48, 25 July 2013 (UTC)

Doom, despair, oppressive misery

It would be nice if you had some news items that weren't about either a) death (through wars & natural disasters) and b) elections. But mostly, most of the news items you select to highlight on the front page are about death. Yes, there is occasionally a Nobel prize being awarded or a royal baby being born. But I think you should expand your understanding of what is newsworthy to allow stories that don't have a body count.

What about Jeff Bezos buying the Washington Post? Yes, maybe not of big interest in the UK or Australia but it could have an impact on the revival of newspapers. Have some major sports, arts or business news along with the massacres and floods that kill hundreds. I think it's important to know about all of them and you shouldn't judge the importance of a news story by how many people died. Newjerseyliz (talk) 13:05, 7 August 2013 (UTC)

NPOV dispute

I'm writing here because I doubt many are watching today's sub-page. I added a blurb about how Russia gave amnesty to two members of Pussy Riot. The three news stories I found about it all mention that the amnesty comes shortly before the Winter Olympics, which will take place in Russia. The BBC story [4] says "The amnesty was widely seen as attempt to avoid controversy overshadowing the Winter Olympics in February, due to be hosted in the Black Sea resort of Sochi." The New York Times says [5] "The members of Pussy Riot, Mr. Khodorkovsky and the Greenpeace activists had all become international symbols for critics of the Russian system, and could well have been the subject of protests and demonstrations during the Winter Olympics, which will be held in the southern Russian city of Sochi in February." The Guardian writes "Lawyers say the amnesty will also enable 30 people arrested in a Greenpeace protest against Arctic oil drilling to avoid trial—removing an irritant in ties with the West before Russia hosts the Winter Olympics in February." Even RT News, [6] while not explicitly drawing a connection to the Olympics, quotes one of the released prisoners as calling the amnesty a "PR stunt". In my opinion, the skepticism about the amnesty is a noteworthy point of view, but another editor disagrees: [7] [8] [9]rybec 19:30, 23 December 2013 (UTC)

"quotes one of the released prisoners as calling the amnesty a "PR stunt"." = POV pushing - no one cares what any single individuals have for an OPINION - this is an encyclopedia - you are looking for another format - either a forum or a blog - take your pick - as for the "quote"-"unquote" news organizations - these are just more single opinions - and further your addition attempting to tie a note on prisoner release to speculation of Russian government motivation fails both WP:NOTNEWS and WP:NOTABILITY.--68.231.15.56 (talk) 02:05, 24 December 2013 (UTC)
She expressed her opinion, and it was reported in the stories about her. That she said it is a fact. Quoting her, or the stories, merely conveys the fact that she expressed herself that way, just as the IP editor reported on the Russian authorities' opinion that the prisoners had committed "hooliganism motivated by religious hatred". Speculation by the news media can be treated in an encyclopedic way; see Republican Party vice presidential candidate selection, 2008 for an example. This is an odd place to be reminding us that "Wikipedia is not a newspaper". —rybec 06:29, 24 December 2013 (UTC)

Which date does a story go on?

I'm sure the old hands here have discussed this before, but as a relative newbie I'm wondering about the policy for something: For a story like the one about the beating of Tetiana Chornovol, where the event occurred on one day (the 25th) but the news reports are dated the next day (the 26th), where should the story be listed? I had a similar question about the death of Ayyub Khalaf, which occurred on the 18th and was reported on the 19th. (I removed that one from the page for the 20th, which was clearly wrong.) --Alexbook (talk) 18:13, 26 December 2013 (UTC)

dont remove anything for dates unless you are prepared to repost immediately on the correct date - my understanding is date and time in time zone of event - unless the event is "discovery" date - such as the body of Mr. Smith was found on December 26--68.231.15.56 (talk) 23:58, 26 December 2013 (UTC)

Clacton by-election, 2014

Please bear with me on this one. Following a recent dispute over the inclusion of content relating to the above matter, I'm seeking consensus on whether or not we should mention the by-election, which occurred in the UK on Thursday 9 October 2014, on the appropriate current events page. The poll saw the election of Douglas Carswell, who became the first candidate from the United Kingdom Independence Party to win a seat in the UK Parliament, receiving 60 percent of the vote. Carswell had switched allegiance from the Conservatives to UKIP a few weeks earlier and resigned his seat, triggering the by-election. UKIP are an anti-EU, anti-immigration party, which were considered to be on the fringe of politics until fairly recently, but have gained in popularity at the expense of the UK's three mainstream political parties, something that could have far-reaching consequences for Britain and countries beyond its shores. At the same time as the Clacton by-election was taking place, another by-election in Heywood and Middleton saw a Labour Party candidate hold onto a safe seat with a tenth of the previous majority after losing votes to UKIP, which ran a close second.

Information about these events was added by me to the page for 9 October, but later removed by another editor, who objected to its inclusion on the grounds that the events were not significant enough for inclusion in Current events. This decision was overturned by Capitalistroadster, but their edit quickly reverted for the same reason. Another addition of it by Everyking was also reverted. I then restored the original information the following day, and added the result of the by-elections to 10 October, highlighting its significance. Again the information was removed, for both days (see this and this). When I challenged this, the editor claimed that there was no international coverage of the elections, but I quickly discovered several articles about it in newspapers as diverse as The New Zealand Herald, Washington Post and The Australian (there is no link to the latter because the information is behind a paywall). After restoring the entries with these sources, things then took a rather bizarre turn when the information was removed again, with the editor saying that it was not notable because we had no coverage of an incident in Pakistan that had resulted in several deaths, that two of the sources were only reporting the elections because they were based in "Commonwealth Realms" reporting on events in the mother country, and that the Washington Post was no good either because he/she hadn't been able to find it personally (see this, this and this).

I believe the information to be notable, and feel I have demonstrated it to be so. I can provide other international references if required, but in order to resolve this matter without further drama, I am seeking to gain consensus on whether or not we should cover this topic. A discussion on the 9 October talk page would suggest the criteria have been met, but do others think these two by-elections are notable enough for here? I understand there's also a wider issue that we apparently have no guidelines for this page, but that's for another discussion. There is, however, a history of inclusion of by-elections from a number of countries, such as UK, Ireland, New Zealand and United States (though I believe they are called special elections there)., and this appears to have gone unchallenged until now. Consequently the matter needs to be put to bed, as it were, to avoid future such disagreements. The proposed entries are as follows:

9 October 2014

  • That is good. In my view, an instance where a new party wins its first seat in a parliament and xomes reasonably close to winning another is notable. Other examples of where a byelection is notable is where it changes the balance of power in the legislature or there is a significant swing against a party in power. By-elections have been significant in Australian politics on a number of occasions such as Bass (1975), Canberra (1995) or Flinders (1982).
We can do away with listing most of the by-elections (special elections) in those other countries as well. The Current Events page could stand to be a bit less Anglocentric in that regard. Except for the rare case where the election leads to a fundamental shift in power within the national legislative body – which would subsequently lead to substantial international news coverage – there doesn't seem to be a need for an entry for these one-off election happenings.
As for Commonwealth realms (I didn't make up that term, so there's no need to put it in quotes), editors should be aware that countries which have the British monarch as their head of state will also harbor a degree of news bias towards events in the United Kingdom over the rest of the world. Those who are familiar with UK politics should readily understand this.
Finally, my whole point in mentioning the Pakistan poisoning story was to question the criteria which a casual news reader would use to choose a story to include on Current Events page. I could have just as easily mentioned the upcoming selection of the new Samsung chairman in order to highlight the disjointed focus on the Clacton election as the story appears on the Washington Post portal. Farolif (talk) 17:59, 11 October 2014 (UTC)
This is also being reported by China Daily, Der Spiegel and Le Monde, newspapers from three non-"Commonwealth Realms". I'm sure there's a whole debate to be had on whether or not "Commonwealth Realms" are biassed towards the UK; actually you'd probably find their international news coverage to be quite broad, but your arguments are becoming more inventive. This is Paul (talk) 18:49, 11 October 2014 (UTC)
Think that proves this had international coverage. This is Paul (talk) 19:28, 11 October 2014 (UTC)
The horse walking into the Cheshire police station also received international coverage.
Based on that criteria, should we add this story to Current Events? Farolif (talk) 23:05, 11 October 2014 (UTC)
Now you're just being silly. This example is nothing but a "man bites dog" story, and I can't think of anywhere in Wikipedia we'd mention it, let alone here. The Pakistan argument does at least have some merit, although the fact it's not mentioned as a news story isn't a valid reason to exclude other content. This is Paul (talk) 12:05, 12 October 2014 (UTC)
I was being "silly" as a way to make a point, and it's much the same point I have set out on from the start: Anyone, with the aid of search engines, can find a story that is reported on some level by news organizations across the globe. The question is what qualifies the story to be included on Current Events. A story that makes top news in one country but is buried in the 'world' section of another country's publications should be more carefully evaluated for being listed here.
BTW - This was also my purpose in pointing out the Pakistan item in the first place - a news story which I was not even aware of until I visited Washington Post's site as a casual reader and - without using the search bar - tried to locate the Clacton article through normal browsing. I was only expressing how unusual I thought it would be for a person who used Washington Post as a primary news source to determine the Clacton election to be of greater significance than other headlines they would encounter in the process. Farolif (talk) 21:32, 12 October 2014 (UTC)
What this would seem to be is a classic case of pettifoggery through the use of straw man arguments to push a particular point of view. 86.140.110.13 (talk) 12:30, 15 October 2014 (UTC)

News Article Keeps Being Removed

I have repeatedly posted the news article on Nov 1 2014 and Oct 31 2014 referring to a rocket being fired into southern israel, violating the ceasefire from Aug 26th, and the residents requesting military intervention. As this could lead to further hostilities in conflict, it is important to mention. Each time it keeps being removed by the same person. The wording is not biased or subjective and plainly states the facts, the article is referenced to times of israel and yahoo news via associated free press. Eframgoldberg (talk) 20:59, 1 November 2014 (UTC)

It is only violating the ceasefire if it's either proven that one of the parties to the ceasefire initiated the launch or same claims responsibility. Meanwhile, there are no damages or injuries caused by the rocket (indeed, it took some time for IDF to confirm that the rocket actually landed in Israeli territory), and there is no retaliation from Israel now over a day after the incident, so your concern of further hostilities appears moot. Regarding the call for military intervention, it would seem that inflating the importance of stories such as this by posting them on WP's Current Events page would function as a self-fulfilling prophecy in that regard. Farolif (talk) 22:22, 1 November 2014 (UTC)
In response Israel has closed the border crossing into Gaza, and on top of the Rafah border crossing that was closed by Egypt, Gaza is closed off for now, so it is important. Furthermore if you look back at Operation Protective Edge, there were rockets being fired into Israel for much of March-June which was not being covered because maybe no one wanted to "inflate the importance of a story"? It turns out that after the IDF announced that the reason for Operation Protective edge was to stop rocket fire into Israel, it got turned into a media war with the kidnapping of 3 Israeli teens being called the cause when at the time Israel did not announce Hamas was responsible, and then at the end Hamas took responsibility. As a matter of act, Wikipedia's own page lists the kidnapping as the reason for Operation Protective Edge. So maybe if these news items were better covered, people could get a more reliable timeline of events. Furthermore I can guarantee you that if an Israeli person launched an attack into Gaza, even if no one died, that it would be on news headlines.

The article and news headline itself does not violate any policy and it is relevant to the ongoing conflict between Israel-Gaza in which both sides have tried to manipulate media to their advantage, which is why objective reporting is even more important. In follow up Hamas arrested 5 individuals responsible for firing the rocket into Israel. As Hamas is the elected leadership of Gaza, they are a priori responsible for attacks from Gaza. By your logic, the government of Gaza is not responsible for armed attacks by it's population on a neighbooring state, so either a. Hamas has no control over the people of Gaza in which case they are not valid representatives of the people and this is considered a terrorist attack, or B. as acting government they are responsible and it is a breach of the cease fire. Regardless of the politics/background behind the event, it is still important. Nuances such as number of injured/destruction of property, retaliation, or claimed of responsibility are not requirements for having a news article posted. Relevance to current events, objective reporting, and unbiased headlines are requirements. Eframgoldberg (talk) 17:50, 2 November 2014 (UTC)

As far as a "self fulfilling prophecy", there is no "ends justify the means" when reporting news. One does not wait and see if a situation escalates before going back and deciding what was news and what was not. People would never be able to form opinions regarding the timeline of events. For example this past week, there was a news headlines about Nato intercepting Russian Jets over the Baltic Sea, and several about Sweden's Russian sumbarine hunt. Should we wait and see if a conflict breaks out before going back and saying this was relevant and should have been posted? I think it is better people have access to articles such as these so they can form their own opinions especially with all the finger pointing and media manipulation that has become standard procedure in modern conflicts. Depth of page headers

@Mrjulesd: This edit to Portal:Current events/News Browser has added another inch or two to the total depth of the headers at the top of the page. I'm not convinced; I think it is more important that readers should be able to see the current day's news box without having to scroll. -- John of Reading (talk) 06:51, 3 November 2014 (UTC)

@John of Reading: OK I've decided to undo it, that's fine. Thanks for raising your concerns, and also for looking after things a lot. I think personally that the trouble is that those buttons are a bit on the ugly side, a softer shade of green or whatever would have improved things. If there was some better way of coding them I think it would be advantageous, mainly regarding their color shade.
They use Template:Clickable button 2 which uses Module:Clickable_button_2. It's not editable without permission, but I think you can. What would be cool is if there was pastel shades and perhaps a better font. It wouldn't have to be added to current events, would just look better on the other portal pages.--Mrjulesd (talk) 08:52, 3 November 2014 (UTC)
@Mrjulesd: Thanks for undoing your change. Yes, I have the user right to edit the module, but since I don't know LUA coding that would be a very bad idea! I suggest you start a thread at Template talk:Clickable button 2. -- John of Reading (talk) 09:03, 3 November 2014 (UTC)
@John of Reading:. Thanks. I don't Lua either, so it would be a hack job! If you see any responses I would like it if you pinged me. --Mrjulesd (talk) 09:09, 3 November 2014 (UTC)

Guidelines for Labels

Can we discuss and reach a consensus please on the guidelines for certain adjectives. Depending on the conflict, the use of certain adjectives might appear as a political bias, I have tried to review past current events but there is an inconsistency to many of the labels. Some instances I can think of off the top of my head are: whether perpetrators of attacks are termed militants, terrorists, operatives, etc.? should incidences be called attacks, terrorist attacks, aggression, or other terms? delineation between protesters and rioters? how specific should victims be described, i.e. gender, age, religion, etc? the use of the terms "alleged", suspect, and perpetrator? I think we can avoid lots of political debate if we can have guidelines for terms such as these that we can consistently follow. Eframgoldberg (talk) 23:47, 10 November 2014 (UTC)

The U.S. 2014 mid-term elections are over - this has stayed too long as a featured In The News article

SO much more worthy recent news items - let's please get this off there and more important stories back into the current events stuff. Thanks.HammerFilmFan (talk) 21:55, 17 November 2014 (UTC)

This talk page doesn't deal with the ITN pane. To suggest stories which can update that section, please go to WP:ITN/C.-gadfium 02:36, 18 November 2014 (UTC)

Classification of cyber attacks

Hello to all current events posters and editors. I would like to raise a question to you all. In the 21st century cyber attacks are becoming more and more frequent on both countries and companies. Now on the Jan 1 current events page someone has put a cyber attack on Chick-fil-a under the "Armed conflicts and attacks" section. I was debating weather to move it to the "Business and economy" section but I couldn't bring myself to do it yet. So my question is, should we classify cyber attacks on companies under the "Armed conflicts and attacks" section or should we only put cyber attacks against countries in that section? Should we include cyber attacks on that section at all? I look forward to the response and opinions of everyone why would like to answer. For now I will leave that story under that section but in a way I don't think it should be there. --Newsjunky12 (talk) 02:18, 2 January 2015 (UTC)

X Factor? Big Brother?

Special:Contributions/109.153.1.43 is putting a lot of effort into adding X Factor and I'm A Celebrity news items into the daily sub-pages. The instructions say that stories "should be of international interest". Now, I know I'm biased, since I have no interest in these shows. Second opinion, anyone? -- John of Reading (talk) 21:30, 12 January 2015 (UTC)

These have all been removed by myself and another. Note to self: if I'd had the courage to act at once, the project's spell-checkers and disambiguators would not have wasted time fixing these news items. -- John of Reading (talk) 07:47, 15 January 2015 (UTC)

"GAS" possible:

One of the events on Jan 29 was:

  • A ---> gas <--- tanker truck explodes near the loading dock of a maternity and children's hospital in Mexico City, collapsing much of the hospital with at least seven deaths and 54 people injured, 22 of which are children. (AP)

No search on the internet has which GAS specified and thus possible gases for a hospital are:

gasoline

natural gas = methane = sulfur additive smell

propane

liquid oxygen = no smell and no possible use in a kitchen

liquid nitrogen = no smell and no possible use in a kitchen

--70.190.111.213 (talk) 18:30, 29 January 2015 (UTC)

one story says "piping gas to kitchen" = probably natural gas - also some said they still "smelled gas" which would be more likely to be methane thus I think the gas in question is natural gas = methane.--70.190.111.213 (talk) 18:43, 29 January 2015 (UTC)

Duke-Wisconsin Date

The game was played on April 6, not April 7. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 129.59.122.10 (talk) 15:00, 7 April 2015 (UTC)

  • Please see beneath debate between myself and Thaddeus B on the 7 April talk page which I have copied here because the topic of timing is of general interest. Capitalistroadster (talk) 00:53, 8 April 2015 (UTC)
  • I have removed Duke Blue Devils winning national championship from today several times. It happened on Monday Eastern Daylight Time in the United States. What day it was elsewhere in the world is irrelevant just as it is for every other story today and every day. Capitalistroadster (talk) 00:16, 8 April 2015 (UTC)
@Capitalistroadster: You are mistaken. Wikipedia uses one and only one clock - UTC time. This is the time stamp shown in your signature and the time the main page changes based on, for example, and is how we have always done things. If we used a different clock for each item on this list, that would be quite confusing when items didn't have a "local time" because they are of general interest - some users would expect to find the item on one day and others on another.
Here, the game started at about 1am UTC on April 7 and concluded at about 3:30am. Local time is not relevant. --ThaddeusB (talk) 00:27, 8 April 2015 (UTC)
@ThaddeusB and Capitalistroadster: I haven't been involved with Portal:Current events for a long time, but my understanding has always been that events are posted to the portal on the date they occurred local time, rather than the date they occurred in UTC. While items on ITN are generally ordered by UTC to be consistent, this generally isn't followed here or anywhere else on Wikipedia. When one visibly sees a date associated with the event, like here, it should be the date of the event, local time, not UTC. No one would ever say that TWA Flight 800 crashed on July 18, 1996; no, it happened on July 17, and it's rightfully included in Wikipedia:Selected anniversaries/July 17. Same convention ought to, and, I believe, does, apply here. -- tariqabjotu 04:42, 8 April 2015 (UTC)
My understanding/experience has always been to use UTC time for current events. However, I could have been "doing it wrong" for years and no one noticed or cared until now. :) --ThaddeusB (talk) 04:47, 8 April 2015 (UTC)
  • Our article on the game shows it has haven't been played on 6 April ie local time see 2015 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championship Game as do all of the reliable sources. Showing it has having been played on the 7th would just confuse people. I always try to have it as the time the event occurred locally not UTC. It was not played in London but it in the US. This discussion should now be taken to the current events talk page and to policy boards more generally. Capitalistroadster (talk) 00:50, 8 April 2015 (UTC)
