History

[edit]

Sparenberg was named for the postmaster in Big Spring, George Sparenberg, who helped W.H. Gartin establish a post office in a store on his farm in 1903. It continued to operate until 1954. Its population was recorded as 200 in 1920, which then plummeted to 75 a decade later with nine businesses. It went up to 85 in 1948 alongside three churches, the post office, and four businesses. From 1980 through 2000, the population dropped to 20 as residents relocated to either Lamesa or Big Spring.[2]

Geography

[edit]

Sparenberg is located at the intersection of Farm to Market Road 828 and Farm to Market Road 26, 14 mi (23 km) southeast of Lamesa in southeastern Dawson County.[2]

Education

[edit]
