Thanks, I'll see what I can write about Hollywood plans. (I'm still surprised there's no reports of Hollywood actors who were in Northern Italy becoming sick.) Kingsif (talk) 21:32, 11 March 2020 (UTC)
Added some stuff; the Variety link wasn't much use because it was February speculation about 'will Bond move its dates' and similar. Kingsif (talk) 21:56, 11 March 2020 (UTC)
Don't mind me, I tend to start "References to use" sections on talk pages when I don't have time to implement them. Feel free to add some and strike out whatever has been used. Erik (talk | contrib) (ping me) 21:59, 11 March 2020 (UTC)

Listing Films Delayed?

Should we start making a list of the films delayed soon? Since the impact on the film industry is massive, I think a list of the films delayed (that's not embedded in a bulk of text somewhere) would be good for readers. QueerFilmNerdtalk 16:10, 12 March 2020 (UTC)

I would support that for readability. While the prose is good for background, it swallows up the titles. Erik (talk | contrib) (ping me) 16:20, 12 March 2020 (UTC)
I'll do up a list. It's growing. F&F9 just delayed a year and its expected even more will be on the way. A list will definitely be needed soon. QueerFilmNerdtalk 16:23, 12 March 2020 (UTC)
Quiet Place II also indefinitely postponed it seems. Kingsif (talk) 17:43, 12 March 2020 (UTC)
Technically, to be released later "this year" (per their statement), so not explicitly indefinite. Erik (talk | contrib) (ping me) 17:48, 12 March 2020 (UTC)

Inclusion of Broadway shutting down (and potential article rename)

I feel out of all the related coronavirus articles, this would be ultimately be the best to discuss Broadway shows shutting down. As a New Yorker, this is unheard of for all of Broadway to close down for this long of a period. Theater isn't cinema, nor television, but I think this is the best article for the info since it is closely related to the two. Hence I feel a name change to Impact of the 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic on entertainment or Impact of the 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic on cinema, television, and theatre would help. - Favre1fan93 (talk) 05:51, 13 March 2020 (UTC)

I actually support this and was thinking of bringing this up. As well, the shutdown of Broadway included several shows due to open and thus could heavily impact the upcoming Tony Awards. If we rename it to entertainment, we could also include Live Nation suspending all tours starting this weekend as well. The impact of the coronavirus on the entertainment industry is going to be massive. QueerFilmNerdtalk 05:58, 13 March 2020 (UTC)
I'm a little concerned about scope creep. I wasn't crazy about television being included because when it comes to that, it's really about television production (with TV being watched at home). With film, it's not just production but also a public-space concern. Stage is a public-space concern but also starts overlapping with live events with both participants and attendees being susceptible. There's more than just Broadway being impacted. Why not just separate these three into their own articles? It feels like three distinctly-grouped topics that don't need to make one big group. Erik (talk | contrib) (ping me) 12:42, 13 March 2020 (UTC)
Also, consider that for television, there may be a "positive" (hate to use that word) impact to be measured that this article doesn't seem to capture, like use of streaming services, rentals, etc. More reason for television to have its own umbrella. Erik (talk | contrib) (ping me) 12:48, 13 March 2020 (UTC)
Agree with Erik. The theatre concern is definitely an Impact of the 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic on live performances, which can cover concerts, too (and some crossover for awards shows, maybe? Part of the film industry but also a live event...). The industry is different, which ultimately comes with massively different effects, i.e. the impact is different, and it will just be two articles on one page. Television doesn't take up much more room than 'these things stopped filming and people watched TV instead of films', which was already at the bottom of the page. Entertainment is way too general for one page. Kingsif (talk) 19:02, 13 March 2020 (UTC)
With the expanding page, I definitely think TV, Film and Live Performances should be separate pages. However, as the impact on the music industry seems to be minimal, I'm tempted to say just make it theatre. For now, impacted tours and concerts can have a note on their own pages. QueerFilmNerdtalk 19:06, 13 March 2020 (UTC)
The music industry seems impacted with concert cancellations. Responding to Kingsif, I do think film and television should be split for the additional reasons I mentioned, essentially consumer behavior. If we split out by the specific topics, I think that allows room for growth, especially considering there may be new elements that are covered that we're not thinking of right now. There could be an entertainment article that has summary sections for each topic too. Erik (talk | contrib) (ping me) 19:33, 13 March 2020 (UTC)
Alright, I'll start separating the topics. I think Broadway will need one eventually, but not right away. Music, I'm more hesitant one. Though I don't play too much attention to music, from what I can see, the impact seems to be remarkably less compared to film and TV music the concert cancellations. I agree on a general entertainment article, that way industries that don't have enough content for a full page can be covered. QueerFilmNerdtalk 19:39, 13 March 2020 (UTC)

The Scheduling#Films Section...

Highly recommend some MASSIVE cleanup for that section. Try and get an order for it and organize the references, there's a lot of repeats. QueerFilmNerdtalk 18:09, 14 March 2020 (UTC)

What's repeated exactly? It's chronological prose, besides being a list, I'm not sure how more 'ordered' it could get. Refs are fine. Kingsif (talk) 18:28, 14 March 2020 (UTC)
Looking back, if anything the second to last paragraph that really gets heavy into the delays could be split, it reads like a block of text to me now but that's just me. For refs, when organizing, I saw a lot of overlap (i.e. an article that mentioned one delay, but then that delay was also mentioned in another article), and I'll take a look later today. We also have about 4 refs that list cancelled events, that can probably all just be one. QueerFilmNerdtalk 18:37, 14 March 2020 (UTC)
Made a split when it changes to more postponements. Kingsif (talk) 18:46, 14 March 2020 (UTC)
Looks good, I'll go through the refs later today to prevent 5 articles hashing out the same idea! QueerFilmNerdtalk

Tom Hanks

Is it going to be appropriate to list big names who get the virus, like Hanks and anyone in the near future? Kingsif (talk) 15:03, 12 March 2020 (UTC)

Firstly, I think it depends on how many get it. However, I'd personally only list them if their quarantine also impacted filming in some way.QueerFilmNerdtalk 16:00, 12 March 2020 (UTC)
Idris Elba, Rita Wilson, Olga Kurylenko, the list grows everyday.Kire1975 (talk) 18:32, 16 March 2020 (UTC)
Hanks and Wilson are included, largely because it shut down productions. Kingsif (talk) 19:01, 16 March 2020 (UTC)
Not enough for a separate list on this page, but it seems to be growing by one or two people a day. Today it was Tormund and the actress from Happy Death Day.[1] Kire1975 (talk) 04:53, 18 March 2020 (UTC)

Theater chains

It seems like this article does not mention that US theater chains are proceeding with closure? ComingSoon.net covers that here. Erik (talk | contrib) (ping me) 14:35, 17 March 2020 (UTC)

And most cinemas in the UK, according to the BBC. Could add these under exhibitors? Kingsif (talk) 16:53, 17 March 2020 (UTC)
You're welcome to add them in paragraphs as needed with RS. If needed, can divide by country later. QueerFilmNerdtalk 21:04, 19 March 2020 (UTC)
Would anyone be interested in a table template of the US theater chain closures listed here? Kingsif (talk) 19:04, 20 March 2020 (UTC)
Definitely, the one issue we might run into is having it be very US centric. So, if we do it for the US, we do it for as many as we can I say. If the table doesn't work out, we can add a blurb about it instead. QueerFilmNerdtalk 17:34, 22 March 2020 (UTC)
Well, other countries have all cinemas closed, while the US hasn't laid that down at federal level. If more data on how many theaters exist in other countries that are de facto closed is available, that can be added. Kingsif (talk) 17:49, 22 March 2020 (UTC)
I'd say the issue would be we'd risk just running a really long list if we added a table. I think it just being mentioned in prose in some way, with exceptional circumstances being pointed out. And maybe even a mention of smaller, independent theatres being harmed as well (I've definitely seem a handful of articles on the effect on small, independent theatres vs chain theatres like Cineplex/AMC/etc. QueerFilmNerdtalk 00:23, 24 March 2020 (UTC)

dyk

Hey, Kingsif, the one-sentence paragraphs that start the Festivals section and the Theatrical releases delayed or cancelled section need a source, per dyk rules --valereee (talk) 01:28, 25 March 2020 (UTC)

@Valereee: The 'Theatrical releases delayed or cancelled' one line only says 'the following are...' - surely that can't be referenced? In any case, neither are actually necessary and can just be removed. Kingsif (talk) 01:30, 25 March 2020 (UTC)

Film based on coronavirus

I started Draft:Corona (film) (talk page has more references to use). I plan to flesh this out in the course of the week. There may be short films out there based on the pandemic as well, as seen with this. I think in the long run, this could be an article in its own right, both in terms of a list and prose. But in the meantime, we could potentially start a "Portrayal in films" section. It could be done now or after I finish the draft and put it in the mainspace. Erik (talk | contrib) (ping me) 17:24, 1 April 2020 (UTC)

I think we should wait for a number of films to be out before starting a section, as it'll take years for anything other than small, low budget movies to be made, a lot of which might not made notability guidelines (I see a lot of them being shorts personally). We should wait. QueerFilmNerdtalk 18:11, 1 April 2020 (UTC)

For some weird reason, in the article's section, "Theatrical releases," some of the images have been accidentally removed, and one of the images has accidentally been enlarged. How can I fix it? Call me when you get the chance (We need to talk/It ain't easy) 18:37, 2 April 2020 (UTC)

Disney's delays

Disney change almost whole their schedule cause situation. Should everything be included in "Delayed" section?

https://deadline.com/2020/04/black-widow-mulan-artemis-fowl-marvel-movies-release-date-changes-box-office-coronavirus-1202900118/

Thor, Shang-Chi, Doctor Strange have production delays.

Jdalker (talk) 19:33, 3 April 2020 (UTC)

Disney might be worth their own section, what with their packed schedule, Disney +, and things like the MCU being its own beast that's been rearranged. Kingsif (talk) 20:31, 3 April 2020 (UTC)
I would definitely consider a film like Thor: Love and Thunder to be an "impacted" production, because it is only adjusting its release date because of the coronavirus domino effect. So as Kingsif mentioned, might be worthwhile to give Disney their own section (or honestly, break up that table by ALL studios). - Favre1fan93 (talk) 20:46, 3 April 2020 (UTC)
A Disney article could also cover their TV and theme parks? It might be a good idea to draft an article rather than section. Kingsif (talk) 16:24, 4 April 2020 (UTC)

Soul and Raya

Should Soul and Raya and the Last Dragon be added to the delayed list? Variety is the only source I've encountered so far that blames COVID-19 for the delay:

I think it would be better if the information were at the article about the movie itself. A more generic statement (surely there's a source which says something along these lines, no?), instead of haphazardly picking examples, would be more appropriate here (i.e. "the theatrical release of many/most/... movies was delayed, and some were instead released via online streaming services"). How much mention should we make of delayed movies?

I frankly think that, per WP:NOTINDISCRIMINATE, we shouldn't be striving to mention every single movie whose release was delayed. Why? Because surely there will be a whole lot of them. Maybe, in a few months time, if one of those movies wins a notable award (i.e. see WP:TOOSOON) or the like we could possibly write "The theatrical release of many movies, including examples such as [Oscar/other award of your choice]-winning [title1] and [title2], was delayed. Some, [including ...], were instead released via streaming services." In the meantime, we should just write; "The theatrical release of many movies was delayed. Some were instead released via streaming services." What do you think? RandomCanadian (talk / contribs) 21:58, 23 June 2020 (UTC)

How do I merge two sources into one?

Inception (the 10th anniversary version of it, anyway) and Tenet, both of which are Christopher Nolan films, have both been delayed to July 31 and August 12, respectively. I cited one source, but for some weird reason, this website mistook them as two sources. How do I merge the "two" into one complete source? I fixed it - you have to name the ref and then just use the name, rather than duplicate the entire citation. Kingsif (talk) 21:53, 26 June 2020 (UTC)

Run Sweetheart Run release

According to The Numbers, the release section in the article Run Sweetheart Run says that the film was pulled from Blumhouse Tilt's May 8, 2020 schedule due to the cinema closures since mid-March because of the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions.[1]

Deadline Hollywood reported in May that the distribution rights to Run Sweetheart Run were purchased by Amazon Studios, and they will release it digitally on Prime Video.[2]

Split off film lists?

This article is extremely long and unwieldy, and half of it is taken up by the lists and tables of films delayed, suspended, etc. I think these would be better off in their own article, say, "List of films impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic". Thoughts? - DoubleCross () 20:11, 5 July 2020 (UTC)

Move films to categories

New suggestion to resolve the ever-growing list: remove all the lists. Affected films with discussion in sources should get some discussion here, but we can create appropriate categories and place all the rest in them. Suggestions for categories:

And anything else applicable. Kingsif (talk) 19:08, 6 July 2020 (UTC)
@Kingsif: We already have Category:Film productions suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Category:Films not released in theaters due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and Category:Films postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. I think those cover all that we need, with perhaps Category:Films postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic getting further refined. I don't feel we need that level of specificity for the production cats you suggested. - Favre1fan93 (talk) 20:13, 6 July 2020 (UTC)
Beyond those three, I think we at least need the re-release category. There's at least two 10th anniversary theatrical releases on the list, that wouldn't be appropriately covered. Kingsif (talk) 20:27, 6 July 2020 (UTC)
I could see that, but are there currently enough to populate a category? - Favre1fan93 (talk) 14:23, 7 July 2020 (UTC)

Standalone article for List of films delayed and cancelled

The list of films which have been delayed, cancelled and released via alternative methods was getting quite long. As such, I have created a stand-alone list-class article for it at List of films impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Please add/remove any movies with relevant references in the lists there. Thank You. •Shawnqual• 📚 • 💭 16:29, 3 August 2020 (UTC)

Thank you for doing this. I had previously suggested the same on July 5, but nobody responded and the section was archived. I have also just created a link to the list in the COVID-19 template.
The list of "Impacted productions" here could be moved to the new article as well. - DoubleCross () 16:51, 3 August 2020 (UTC)

Insurance crisis

Here's an article that could improve the quality of our coverage of the pandemic's impact:

https://variety.com/2020/film/news/production-insurance-hollywood-covid-crisis-1234770521/

First draft of what to say: Productions need cast insurance to avoid the risk of going bankrupt if a starring cast member get sick or dies during shooting. But now insurers charge exorbitant premiums if they're willing to cover losses from COVID-19 at all. Many projects simply collapse.
