Notability

[edit]

Being a martial arts "geek", I'll vouch for the achievements of James Hernandez (just) meeting notability requirements. Mr Hernandez appears to be User:Chico9, and has been advised on the Help Desk on 04 May 2006 of WP:N and WP:AUTO. I'm keeping an eye on this article and will help as and when I can. — Estarriol talk 14:32, 4 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sigh

[edit]

All of my wikifying undone. Sigh. User:Zoe|(talk) 23:56, 4 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Don't worry, I used your start on wikifying to complete the linking so you didn't waste your time! - Adrian Pingstone 08:42, 5 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'm afraid that Chico9 is a wikipedia novice and overwrote your work. Thanks to everyone for their work on this article. — Estarriol talk 08:51, 5 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A lot of BS ...

[edit]

I noticed this article while doing global hockey edits on AWB, and just off the top of my head, the hockey-related paragraph is completely comprised of unproven allegations. Each and every link in it bears no resemblance to the statements asserted - they do nothing more than confirm the existence of the names dropped in the paragraph. I'm not only removing it, but I'm going to go through the article and likewise aggressively remove unsourced or improperly sourced statements, as WP:BLP enjoins us to do. Obviously a great deal of puffery is in evidence here, and I encourage other editors to likewise remove unsourced, unproven, miscited and trivial statements. Ravenswing 11:01, 21 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Much of the content related to him as a hockey player fail WP:V and therefore should be removed per WP:BLP (and I have already removed some of that content), however the article does refer to this source which does collaborate some of the hockey player claims, although I am not certain if it should be considered a reliable source. Dolovis (talk) 12:33, 21 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'm fairly certain it should be not be considered a reliable source, given the "Are you an active or former college hockey player? Click here to submit your profile to the directory" prominently at the bottom of it. Quite aside from that, the lines alleging that two club hockey programs were "NCAA Division 2" and "NCAA Division 3" respectively suggests that fact checking isn't a priority on this site. Cleanup complete

[edit]

Alright ... everything still in the article is something I've verified myself. Obviously what's remaining is more a bunch of bullet points of Hernandez's career than a cohesive whole. What would bear further scrutiny are these three biographical links: http://www.ussambo.com/pioneers.html, http://www.mshof.com/Inductee-21 and http://web.archive.org/web/20020812173838/http://www.army.mil/usar/news/2002/05may/chico.html. The problem I see with the first two is that I'm unsold on the factchecking involved; they parrot claims that were uncited elsewhere, and I wonder if Hernandez is himself the source of such facts. (Let's just say that the prior state of this article is a poster child for WP:COI/WP:AUTO, and the dangers inherent in people creating and editing their own articles.) I like the Army's cite better, and while some of the wrestling info in it might likewise come from Hernandez, one should expect that the detail concerning Hernandez's military career is accurate.

All that being said, it'd be a good idea for some other editors to go over the information available. Ravenswing 09:41, 23 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Redux ...

[edit]

Chico9, the reasons that material was removed before is that citations were missing or were otherwise deficient. If there's no way we could possibly get ahold of citations to verify them (such as thirty year old military post newsletters), they're deficient cites. Newspaper cites should have the exact date and the precise article name, not a vague "Chicago Tribune, February, 1978" attached ... having already gone through a month's worth of newsprint trying to chase down such elusive articles.

Citations should exactly back up the statement cited: an assertion, for instance, that Hernandez won "2 United States Army Correctional Brigade Freestyle Wrestling Championships, 1 Headquarters and Headquarters Company Garrison Freestyle Wrestling Championship, 3 United States Army 1st Infantry Division Freestyle Wrestling Championships and 3 Post Freestyle Wrestling Championships" is unfounded when the cite solely mentions him winning his weight class at a single post competition.

WP:BLPREMOVE requires us to aggressively remove unfounded, poorly cited or uncited material from a BLP article. I strongly suggest that before you try again to add back in material already removed for lack of proper citation, you provide proper cites. Ravenswing 19:17, 29 February 2012 (UTC) Thanks for the advice Ravenswing and before I try anymore edits, I will try to pinpoint the exact newssource/ reference from newspaper or newletter. I have plenty of reference material but I need to refine it some more. I would like to have you review it before I attempt to post/edit update if possible. Thanks for keeping me straight. Good to hear from you. Chico 9 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Chico 9 (talkcontribs) 00:59, 1 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
