Lennie's teaching methods.

[edit]

I'd like to expand the section about Lennie's teaching methods. I didn't study with him, but I took some lessons with a student of Sal Mosca; Sal himself was one of Lennie's students. I'd like to cover some of the things that Lennie was teaching and examine them from both conceptual and procedural points of view. Some of the things that might be covered include -- listening to and learning to sing and play solos, key performances and artists Lennie recommended to students, various rhythmic exercises Lennie was into, ear training concepts and so on. I may be bold and expand the section, but thought I'd leave a comment here about this and see if any others who studied with him might like to open this up a bit. I'll go ahead and review this; it's waited much too long for one. Wizardman 02:11, 1 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I'm finishing off responding to another GAR, so ready when you are. EddieHugh (talk) 12:21, 2 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Everything looks good for the references, images, and copyright status. The prose itself I'll review tonight. Wizardman 12:00, 8 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Here are the issues I found:

  • " several instruments, including saxophones, trumpet, guitar, and drums.[5] At the age of eleven he had his first gigs, playing clarinet in a brothel." including saxophone (unless he played different kinds)
Source lists tenor, alto and C-melody. EddieHugh (talk) 09:10, 9 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • The section "later life and career" feels iffy, if only because having a section called later life start so early seems odd. I'd just make that career, perhaps the 60-70s could instead be the later life part.
It's what I've done for most of my GAs on pianists. It puts him in his 20s and contrasts with "early life". I think I started using "Later life and career" when another reviewer asked me to incorporate a "Personal life" section into the career sections, so the heading had to change. I think it's better than isolating personal life (which pretends that there's no link between professional and private life) and can be used regardless of how long the person lived, as it's "later" rather than "late". EddieHugh (talk) 09:10, 9 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • "He gave private music lessons from around the same time," rm from
As becomes apparent later, giving lessons became the main part of his life, so the idea of continuation is required here. "from around" is one solution; "began giving private music lessons around" is another. EddieHugh (talk) 09:10, 9 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Partway through 40s so far, I'll complete the rest asap; got late too quickly over here. Wizardman 03:08, 9 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. Replies indented and signed above. EddieHugh (talk) 09:10, 9 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Here's the rest of what I found:

  • "Tristano started a record label, named Jazz Records" rm comma
Done. EddieHugh (talk) 10:38, 13 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • I still feel like using from is overused here. It's fine occasionally but having it (i.e. "He gave fewer concerts than earlier, but from 1958 he had sometimes lengthy engagements") basically gives us a starting date without an endpoint, which happens multiple times. It's not a major issue, but by making the timeline open-ended by using "from" it makes it harder to read than it needs to be.
Good point. I think it happened because I added a lot from one source that was chronological and then I didn't patch everything together completely afterwards. Some can't be resolved, as I don't have end dates and some of the things LT did were periodic. I could, for instance, add dates of performances at the Half Note, but that would be excessively detailed. I've changed most of them, I think; the timeline remains open where it must, but I've reworded to the more definite "in". EddieHugh (talk) 10:38, 13 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • The second half of the article starts to get a little heavy with quoting. I wouldn't worry about it for GA, but that might be something to modify should you decide to go for FA.
I do that a lot... as you suggest, I'll paraphrase if going further with it. EddieHugh (talk) 10:38, 13 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

As for the section heading, I see your point there. While I'm not a big fan as is, it is better than isolation the personal life section; I never understood why some reviewers push that. It's a very well-written article overall, and I'm happy to pass it once the above is fixed. Wizardman 04:08, 13 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the review. Responses and updates are indented and signed above. Let me know if there's anything else. EddieHugh (talk) 10:38, 13 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Everything looks good now, so I'll pass this article as a GA. Wizardman 23:39, 14 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
