Faism priestly roles[edit]

I wanted to ask you to clarify, however, what a statement in the Faism article meant: it says that Faist priests' roles in Chinese society included being married. Hello! Thank you for the appreciation! Regarding married priests... yes, in some religions (actually many, or maybe most religions) priests can wed and also have another occupation. Only Catholic priests, and generally the monks (of any religion) must live a celibate and ascetic life. In Chinese religions this is the case of the Quanzhen monks, while ritual masters and shamans of the various local cults can marry.--Aethelwolf Emsworth (talk) 15:47, 26 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I see you are the one who have recently contributed to Mo (religion) article, a Zhuang's religion. But Moism is not only practiced by the Zhuang but all Tai peoples who are not influenced by Buddhism and Hinduism. I've just made some edits on the Nùng people article. They are one of Tai ethnics who practice Moism and Animism. But I find the article has no section for religion and I myself have not much knowledge about this aspect, therefore I think you could help out with it (if you know any). Regards. Hello! I have found just one academic publication specifically about Nung folk religion (Nguyễn Thị Yên. Tày-Nùng Folk Beliefs. H.: Social Sciences Publishing House, 2009, 719 pages, Vb 47561), but unfortunately it can't be found online. I have also found a publication that exhaustively describes the Then religion of the Tay. The aithor is the same Nguyễn Thị Yên who has studied the Nung religion. Shi Yong[edit]

Hi, I think you made a mistake in associating Shi Yong with the Stone Generals in the Kantai Tianhou Temple in Taiwan. The two Stone Generals are folk deities worshipped by the locals and have nothing to do with Shi Yong. Shi Yong does not really play an important role in the novel Water Margin even though he is one of the 108 Stars of Destiny. "Stone General" is simply his nickname in the ranking of the 108 Stars. Merge Yuan Fen into Yuanfen[edit]

Hi AE --

I came across your article Yuan fen when I was looking for sources for the presently unsourced Yuanfen. Since "Spacing in pinyin is based on whole words, not single syllables" Pinyin#Orthography, the title should be "Yuanfen," and I left a note on "Yuan Fen"'s Talk Page that I would merge it. I'd be happy to do so, but since you were the one who did the work on the page, maybe you should be the one to merge it and get the credit. What do you think? Faism? Wuism?[edit]

Hi again AE;

I have another question, again leaning on your good faith and wondering if you can help me out. I've put a comment at the Talk Page for Faism, where I wonder if there is an English language source for the term "Faism." I looked through the notes and sources for the article and could not find one, and a Google search didn't find anything substantial either. So to tell the truth I'm a little skeptical and in any case doubt that Wikipedia should put so much emphasis on such an out-of-the-way term, even if there is a source for it.

I also doubt that Wuism is a good term for an article in the English Wikipedia see WP:English. The main source is a translation, that is, Libbrecht. Although there are several examples in reliable sources, the term is not in general use in other places or in surveys so it is not a WP:Common Name. I suggest that we should rename the article "Chinese shamanism" or some such, and expand it. How does this sound?

You will see that I went ahead and made changes at Chinese folk religion to bring it in line with guidelines for writing the lead in WP:Lead.

Hello CWH. Regarding "Faism", the main source for it is the academic publication of the Folk Religion Society of Taiwan Faism and Folk Religion, which is the official translation of "法教與民俗信仰學術研討會論文集". Since the topic has not been covered in Western academia, I think the Chinese source to be a good start.
Regarding Wuism vs. Chinese shamanism, the respective articles explain that the two are different (ex. Wuism is not the same as southern mediumship). Chinese shamanism should remain a disambiguation page.
I personally disapprove the deletion of alternative names in the lede of the article, particularly in the case they are terms used by academics and properly sourced. Per MOS:LEADALT they should be present in the lede: "significant alternative names for the topic should be mentioned in the article, usually in the first sentence or paragraph. These may include alternative spellings, longer or shorter forms, historical names, and significant names in other languages. Hello, I was waiting for other people (a third opinion) to comment on the Talk:Religion in China on what to do with the tables, because of our discussion, but you put those tables on the Demographics of China instead. As much disagreement as I have on the usefulness of tables, I think they are even more unsuitable for the Demographics of China article, because if there is already an available main article on this topic ("Religion in China"), then that's where you should put these extensive information at. Making this whole section in the Demographics of China article entirely tables without "content and context" to elaborate isn't a very good way to go. That's why the main article is a better place.

Also, on the talk, you proposed a collapsible template, and that would be a better direction.

Short citations are cool![edit]

Just a note to thank you again and make a quick suggestion about bibliography and reference short citations that will save you time in the long run and make the notes in the articles you work on easier for readers. The big advantage for readers is that the footnote is linked directly to the entry in the References section, and the big advantage for the editor is that it produces correct form with no fuss. There is certainly no compulsion to use it, but it is widely used among experienced editors such as yourself. I admit that it took me some experimentation and some mistakes, but it becomes as easy as spelling.

There are several ways to cite described in WP:CITESHORT or the main article Help: Shortened Footnotes.

This is especially helpful in a long complicated article in which a source is referenced in a number of notes

You can see the system in many (but not all) notes in Hinduism or Franz Kafka.

Here are some examples.

I wrote a mail to them in Taiwanand here is the answer: " About "Weixinism", it was a translation before 2010 at a time when we declared ourself as a denomination called "Weixinzong". But there were many people get confused and see us as the branch sect of Buddhism ("zong"宗 means a branch) so we announced that we are an independent new religion called Weixin Shengjiao ("Shengjiao" 聖教 means holy teaching, also a religion). After 2010 our official publications no longer use "Weixinism" or "Weixinzong."" Unfortunately, I do not know how to change the title of the page but recommend you simply eliminate your changes. Also, in all the most recent books of the movement mentioned in the bibliography "Weixin Shengjiao" is translated as "Sacred Teachings of the Mind Only". Please also correct back the French, I believe you can do this by simply eliminating your changes. Hello Aida. They clearly referred to their official name in Chinese, Weixin Shengjiao instead of Weixinzong (Weixin Tradition), not to the English translation. Besides, zong, "tradition", is not generally translated as "ism", while jiao is. The current official name of the church is Weixin Shengjiao, for short Weixinjiao, and "Weixinism" in English. They consistently publish under the name "Weixinism" through their English-laguage official websites and English-language media. See the English pages of Hun Yuan's website, the official website of their Global Info Centre ("Weixinism Zen-Ji Mountain Global Information Center), their YT news channels and their official YT channel.
