WikiCup 2010 October newsletter

The 2010 WikiCup is over! It has been a long journey, but what has been achieved is impressive: combined, participants have produced over seventy featured articles, over five hundred good articles, over fifty featured lists, over one thousand one hundred "did you know" entries, in addition to various other pieces of recognised content. A full list (which has yet to be updated to reflect the scores in the final round) can be found here. Perhaps more importantly, we have our winner! The 2010 WikiCup champion is Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), with an unbelievable 4220 points in the final round. Second place goes to New Orleans TonyTheTiger (submissions), with 2260, and third to New South Wales Casliber (submissions), with 560. Congratulations to our other four finalists – White Shadows (submissions), William S. Saturn (submissions), Connecticut Staxringold (submissions) and Colombia ThinkBlue (submissions). Also, congratulations to Hungary Sasata (submissions), who withdrew from the competition with an impressive 2685 points earlier in this round.

Prizes will also be going to those who claimed the most points for different types of content in a single round. It was decided that the prizes would be awarded for those with the highest in a round, rather than overall, so that the finalists did not have an unfair advantage. Winning the featured article prize is New South Wales Casliber (submissions), for five featured articles in round 4. Winning the good article prize is Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), for eighty-one good articles in round 5. Winning the featured list prize is Connecticut Staxringold (submissions), for six featured lists in round 1. Winning the picture and sound award is Jujutacular (submissions), for four featured pictures in round 3. Winning the topic award is Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), for forty-seven articles in various good topics in round 5. Winning the "did you know" award is New Orleans TonyTheTiger (submissions), for over one hundred did you knows is round 5. Finally, winning the in the news award is Republic of Ireland Candlewicke (submissions), for nineteen articles in the news in round three.

The WikiCup has faced criticism in the last month – hopefully, we will take something positive from it and create a better contest for next year. Like Wikipedia itself, the Cup is a work in progress, and ideas for how it should work are more than welcome on the WikiCup talk page and on the scoring talk page. Also, people are more than welcome to sign up for next year's competition on the signup page. Well done and thank you to everyone involved – the Cup has been a pleasure to run, and we, as judges, have been proud to be a part of it. We hope that next year, however the Cup is working, and whoever is running it, it will be back, stronger and more popular than ever. Until then, goodbye and happy editing! File copyright problem with File:Central Park Kilmer tree from south.JPG

Thank you for uploading File:Central Park Kilmer tree from south.JPG. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the file. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their license and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 10:55, 2 November 2010 (UTC)

Please help me!

Hello there, fellow Wikipedian! Please, allow me to clarify that I’m not a robot or anything of the sort... please carry on reading! =) Allow me to introduce myself – My name is Maria and I’m a high school student at El Salvador. You probably know this country, because according to the revision history in the “El Salvador” Wikipedia page, you took part in its maintenance just recently, not many days ago. You probably may think that this is extremely random for a total stranger to ask for your help, out of the blue, but I think you just may be the right person to help me out for my ITGS (IT in a Global Society) investigation. It’s simple, really. I have a set of interview questions (some are open, some are closed) that you, as a WP-editing expert, could kindly answer for me. I’d really appreciate it if you helped me out. I can send you my analytical essay to further prove that I really am a student seeking opinions on the subject of her research, and not some spamming/phishing robot. You can contact me at marialaurapa@gmail.com to send me your interview answers, or any other queries you may have. I am happy to respond to any of your questions regarding my research. If you could respond as soon as possible, that would be great. My full interview transcript is due on Wednesday the 10th of November. Here is the set of questions I would like you to answer:

1. How often do you find offenses and inaccuracies in Wikipedia?

2. If so, what kind of offenses have you found?

3. How do you think this affects the use of Wikipedia for educational purposes?

4. As an editor, have you ever faced any cases of vandalism or unrighteous deletion to your posts?

5. As a scholar, have you ever felt inclined towards using Wikipedia as your only source?

6. If so, or if not, why?

7. Are you an advocate of Open-Source online encyclopedias, or do you consider commercial encyclopedias as a more reliable source of information?

8. (To previous question) Why?

9. Do you believe that every person should have the same right to establishing of an 'editor' hierarchy?(Take into account the repercussions that this has in education)

10. How do you think these changes in Wikipedia transform the open source community?

Thank you for your time!

Required Registration

Hi Alansohn. I continue to think that your essay on registration is a key direction to focus on for the future. I see others mentioning required registration as well. Offhand, do you know if there have been any RfC's regarding this subject, or discussion in other corners of the project? Thanks in advance for your time. Jusdafax 15:17, 4 November 2010 (UTC)

It's funny, I got some really positive feedback and really negative responses to my thoughts on my user page. People feel very strongly about the issue and I want to create an essay page for it to gauge community response. Thanks for the note. Alansohn (talk) 01:55, 5 November 2010 (UTC)
Thank you! So, I take it that to your knowledge there has been no previous RfC's or other wiki-areas where required registration has been debated? Like you, I'd like to look into this further. Jusdafax 03:49, 6 November 2010 (UTC)

Beaten you to vandalism

Have I beaten you to vandalism? Wayne Olajuwon chat 16:58, 4 November 2010 (UTC)

Happens all the time that you or someone else "beats" me to vandalism. I always try to remember that it's not a race and that accuracy is far more important than speed in fighting vandalism. Alansohn (talk) 18:18, 4 November 2010 (UTC)
That's true, but you should look out for user talk page vandalism too including my user talk page, and Wikipedia isn't a battleground nor a third-person shooting game. Why don't you customize your signature? Also, how do you start receiving did you know templates? Wayne Olajuwon chat 23:35, 4 November 2010 (UTC)
I keep my signature plain and simple, and I like it that way. Head over to T:TDYK to see the articles that have been nominated for Did You Know on the main page. In addition to vandal fighting duty I try to work on a new article or two a day so that I feel that I'm actually contributing to improving the encyclopedia and not just removing the word "poop" someone felt the need to add. Alansohn (talk) 01:53, 5 November 2010 (UTC)
Your right but can you suggest me some articles that I could nominate for Did you Know? WAYNEOLAJUWON 02:12, 5 November 2010 (UTC)
Look around Wikipedia and see what's missing. There are huge numbers of biographies that are waiting to be written, among the millions of articles that are missing from Wikipedia. Alansohn (talk) 02:15, 5 November 2010 (UTC)
Can you create an article that I would nominate for did you know? Do I have to be a member of WP:Did you know in order to receive did you know templates? WAYNEOLAJUWON 02:17, 5 November 2010 (UTC)
Anyone can participate at DYK, there's no membership requirement. You can search through new articles to find ones that might be good candidates or you can create your own new content. Alansohn (talk) 02:24, 5 November 2010 (UTC)
Can you give me some Did you Know tips because I don't know understand much about Did you know? WAYNEOLAJUWON 02:38, 5 November 2010 (UTC)
Articles need to be new or expanded within the past five days, must have sources and have a hook that would draw people to the article. WP:DYK has the complete rules, but the best thing to do is to find a subject that you have an interest in -- your hometown, a nearby historic residence, an athlete or politician, anything -- and see if there are articles that don't exist that you could create or expand. It's far easier to do if you have an existing interest that you could build on and create new content. Alansohn (talk) 02:46, 5 November 2010 (UTC)
Does did you know tell you the name of articles that need to be expanded? WAYNEOLAJUWON 14:41, 5 November 2010 (UTC)
No, it doesn't. Wikipedia does have lists of new articles, but there's no organized way to find articles in need of expansion, at least as far as I know. Alansohn (talk) 15:51, 5 November 2010 (UTC)

Dumping poop

Hi! Just to let you know, I thought your userpage essay, "Dumping poop", effectively illustrates one of this encyclopedia's major weaknesses. Since vandals know they can't really be caught because they are physically thousands of miles away from the vandal-fighters, they end up reducing the potential rate of growth of WP, however you would measure that. (This is actually sort of like sleep. If people didn't have to sleep at all, then we probably would be more technologically advanced.) Thanks for summing it all up nicely in your essay, which I think deserves its own page in the WP namespace. Guoguo12--Talk--  01:29, 27 October 2010 (UTC)

Funny, I just got dumped on by a participant at RfA as being unsuitable to be an admin because of that essay. I've probably made over 100,000 vandalism reverts and I spent hours a day seeing almost nothing but vandalism coming from IP addresses. I ought to revisit it and see how this fits with my current thoughts now that I'm on Huggle detox, but there has to be a better way to strike a balance between getting new editors to feel able to make edits while keeping the petty vandals away. Thanks for the kind note which comes at a moment when I'm feeling a bit beaten up from a Wikipedia perspective. Alansohn (talk) 01:34, 27 October 2010 (UTC)
As a Huggler also in recovery, I also find your essay refreshing and indeed "spot on." My next edit will be to vote a support on your Rfa! Best wishes, Jusdafax 02:50, 27 October 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for your support and kind words. Alansohn (talk) 02:54, 27 October 2010 (UTC)

About space child

Why my edit is "unconstructive" ? I know for sure the way DNA is extracted in '99 had no chance of extracting nuclear DNA. SO the statement "conclusive evidence that the child was not only human (and male), but both of his parents must have been human as well" IS COMPLETELY BOGUS AND A LIE. A 2003 sequencer which is a lot newer machine NOT available in 99 couldn't do the job how did they do it in 99 ?!? The last DNA test with the state of the art machine with technology from 2006 made in 2010 confirms that the nuclear DNA is unknown compared to the billions DNA samples in the US DNA library (forgot the name). SO how is unconstructive saying that somebody OBVIOUSLY lied for whatever the reason ? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.128.93.212 (talk) 18:54, 12 November 2010 (UTC)

You need to be careful to ensure that the material you're adding to this article is based on reliable and verifiable sources, not based on your opinion on the issue. Alansohn (talk) 19:44, 12 November 2010 (UTC)

Based on the state of technology and the statements of Trace Genetics (it's owners) the Canadians had no chance of doing what they have said they did. Which in plain words means - they lied ! And it's not "my opinion" it's so plain and simple a 3 yeas child will get it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.128.93.212 (talk) 00:12, 13 November 2010 (UTC)

Hello, I think there's a bit of a mixup. I was fixing vandalism, not creating it. 12.34.39.3 (talk) 19:55, 12 November 2010 (UTC)

A string of edits was reverted based on the contents of this edit, which added inappropriate content to the article. My apologies for my error. Alansohn (talk) 19:58, 12 November 2010 (UTC)

Weird, don't know how that happened. Anyways, I reverted everything back to normal. Good to know that someone's watching out I suppose. 12.34.39.3 (talk) 20:02, 12 November 2010 (UTC)

If you look at my contributions, how do you think I'm doing on Huggle? WAYNEOLAJUWON 00:33, 14 November 2010 (UTC)

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive!

GOCE November 2010 backlog elimination drive progress graphs

We have reached the midway point in our backlog elimination drive, so here is an update.

Participation report — The November drive has 53 participants at this point. We had 77 participants in the September drive. In July, 95 people signed up for the drive, and in May we had 36. If you are not participating, it is not too late to join!

Progress report — The drive is quite successful so far, as we have already almost reached our target of a 10% reduction in the number of articles in the backlog. We are doing very well at keeping our Requests page clear, as those articles count double for word count for this drive.

Please keep in mind the possibility of removing other tags when you are finished with an article. If the article no longer needs {{cleanup}}, {{wikify}}, or other similar maintenance tags, please remove them, as this will make the tasks of other WikiProjects easier to complete. Thanks very much for participating in the Drive, and see you at the finish line!
