Prep

It has 4/7 bolded bios which doesn't strike me as too much at all, especially in the circumstances. If I moved one to another queue, someone might move it back again to finish it off. I presume the Bruce Springsteen song and the mosque don't count. Blanco's image wasn't even him so that's why I used it. There must be better images–I see they're even submitting maps now... also it is taking me forever to load a page right now so I hope this saves easily. The image can't be used if there is a copyright problem. But, like you said, they can be swapped when more are reviewed–at least they're not all-American male bios like I saw on the Main Page once. (edit conflict) I've done it for you. All you need to do is right-click on the "give" link after the user's name, copy the name of the article into the "article" field, and hit "Save".

I was commenting that a lot of people are not happy with the way the system runs, for better or worse, and that blaming Wizardman for saying what other editors may be thinking isn't exactly fair. Foreign relations of Morocco

I saw you reverted an intermediate edit I made. What I was starting to do is

• Break up the big table by region (Maghreb, Middle East, Europe, US, Rest of world)
• Convert table entries to sections, generally more readable and easier to edit
• Reshuffle the article so the existing text for each region and the content for each country in the region is in one section
• Bring in brief summaries for each country

Hi i have a question

How could a hook from the article Pyrrhotite be promoted and appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page in the Did you know? column on 24 July 2009 if it doesn't have all the DYK requirements. From what i know it has to be a non-stub article but this one is unassessed. Mario1987 12:28, 28 July 2009 (UTC)

As an author it is diffiuclt to decipher exactly where all the paraphrasing has been uncomfortably close to the original references. I read the article carefully and made some changes in the text, wherever I could percieve. I might still have missed some (difficult to discern by the author). I would be happy to make more amends where the paraphrising is still not in order. A reviewer is in a better position to exactly pinpoint the required changes. I have some concerns about the HIV article being incredibly detailed and not wanting to overwhelm it with recentism. Also I am not sure if the plague is internationally significant and is maybe (at the moment) just a local headline story which is attracting attention because it is the plague. Sorry, I am just in the process of writing this one and it says here that the deal will be agreed in November? Will it not therefore be nominated again then? "A definitive agreement detailing the status of the proposed base and Russia's existing Kant base will be signed by November." Also, language-wise (the italics), "No specifics on the location of the base or the amount of troops were given, but the document signed Saturday by the leaders of the two countries indicated that Russia may be allowed to deploy the equivalent of a battalion. Media reports have suggested a base could be set up in Batken province, near the border with Uzbekistan." I looked at that too but it is the discovery of the first casualty of the Gulf War which, when compared to the death of the last person who experienced WWI, seemed quite small. My double nomination

Hi, would you please help me out here? I submitted my own DYK double nomination which is now at queue. My hook highlited two brand new articles. It read originally:

Help with "No MOVE option available"

Hi, I've been directed to you (User_talk:Drilnoth#No_MOVE_option_available) as the person that may have put a move-inhibit on article Joaquín Guzmán. The matter came about as I was trying to standardize the names of Mexican Drug War drug lords who, as virtually all Mexicans do, ordinarilly have 2 last names (see here --> [Category:Mexican Drug War]), and are ordinarilly so tracked by law enforcement agencies (example: http://www.state.gov/p/inl/narc/rewards/c27667.htm ).

Can you help either by unblocking the Move operation for this article (and I will proceed with the move of Joaquín Guzmán TO Joaquín Guzmán Loera myself) or by performing the operation yourself (thanks!)? After reading our article on Cabal, I would say I probably am not; I do sometimes promote my own agenda but not in a secretive or persistent way. In general, I let other people do what they want to do here, as long as they don't harm the project in an obvious way. You know someone is in a cabal when they deny it. I made an addition at Wikipedia:List of cabals#In The News cabal based on the AN/I discussion, which made me chuckle a few times. Kennedy would have gone up back in my day without question, though Howard the Duck would assert that I'm a unreformed pro-US inclusionist, but ITN now is sunshine-and-lollipops compared to the situation back when Pharos and I went tooth and nail against the trio that ruled the candidates page who believed the point of the candidates page was to prevent admins from posting items. I saw a problem on a wiki article and thought you could help. I am picking you as a random administrator (Or rather, the only one I have talked to before). There is this wiki article on the famous controversial novel Lajja by Taslima Nasreen. Well, the page was about the novel till Aug 9. Then suddenly an IP replaced its contents with stuff copied from Lajja (film). It stayed like that till today when I noticed. As another page about the film exists, I have reverted to the old form of the page - I hope I did the right thing. I am really sad that such things go unnoticed on wikipedia for so long. I would be happy if you could watch the page, as I am active only on Malayalam Wikipedia

Erroneous Bot from an admin

Hi there. Would you please be so kind and look into this bot from this admin? His bot included a BLP article of a nigerian award winning actress into a porn-list-log. As wikipedia is being used nowadays by the media as a source, such an inclusion into a porn-log list not only has the power to potentially damage the reputation of the subject of the BLP, but also violates against existing US and international laws. Lastly, the erroneous bot also included the article in question into other log-lists that have nothing whatsover to do with the subject of the BLP. Diameter to Radius?

I have to say that I found this change, based on the WP:ERRORS report at the time, a bit odd. Obviously, if the ring had a radius hundreds of times larger than Saturn's radius, it also has a diameter hundreds of times larger than Saturn's diameter (although I could suppose that the wording at the time could have been interpreted as the ring having a diameter hundreds of times that of the planet's radius). -- tariqabjotu 08:04, 8 October 2009 (UTC)

I agree with you that 'forehead' should not have been linked in the hook for Comptesse de Noailles. All these links have a dilutive effect on the link to the desired target page. L'Homme Qui Marche I

Hi, thank you very much for editing the article, posting it to ITN and giving me the credit on my talk page. :) I've just seen the image that was uploaded to the article a little while ago and I believe that it is not the same sculpture that was sold at the auction. The sculpture in the picture doesn't look like it's made of bronze, it looks lighter then the one in this picture, [10]. I have read in the sources that there are a few versions of the sculpture around though, so I think it could be one of those. The Swiss National Bank assures us here that the sculpture depicted is indeed L'Homme qui marche I – "one of Giacometti's best known figures. In it, the artist has captured a physical movement. For Giacometti, the natural equilibrium of the stride symbolizes man's [sic] own life force." The sculpture is depicted from four different angles on the note: these are, of course, engravings made from drawings rather than photographic reproductions. Maybe it would be better to say "depicted" or "represented" rather than "pictured"? While I'm being pedantic, we should note the correct French capitalization as well! Main Page balance

Do you have any idea if there are guidelines for whom the Main Page balance should be designed for? At 1280x800, without the last item you removed from ITN, I got a large amount of whitespace at the bottom of OTD. Even with the item, there is still a bit of whitespace. But now as I resize the window to make it smaller, I see that it stays fine for only a little bit. By the time the screen reaches 90% of my width, I start to see a bit of whitespace on the left, and then by 75% there's a gaping hole on the DYK side. They have had a discussion regarding this issue before - hence the ITN template says: "In terms of Main Page balance, right now we're configured for widescreen monitors, which it appears most editors use. Non-widescreen users, please do not change the balance even if it looks off on your monitor." Re: Balance

What is your screen resolution? I have 1024x768 now, and the balance is quite bad, with ITN longer than TFA, while DYK and OTD are comparable. I know on higher resolution, the DYK column will look longer, and I can check various display settings on weekdays, but not weekends. Materialscientist (talk) 06:57, 13 February 2010 (UTC)

I forgot to mention that I've looked through the above thread and the monitor poll. The drive for my adding DYK hooks is DYK backlog, which used to be over 300 noms/T:TDYK for many weeks, but its getting under 300 now. The resolution issue is worrying: plenty of laptops still use 1024x768 whereas most desktop screens are higher res. I guess you can lower res on your screen to 1024x768 and see what happens (although it might still not be the same result as on a 1024x768 laptop screen). When I do such test during weekdays, the balance of right/left column length changes quite a lot (image/text ratio changes, I guess), and this is worrying, because of the above duality (laptop/desktop users). I have emailed the researchers who wrote the academic article, and specifically the person listed for resource requests, but have not heard back. Wondering if I might bother you for an edit?

Hello there friendly friend. A while back you nominated the article Tom Krieglstein for DYK due to him being the first in line for the Obama's election nigh rally.

I was wondering if I could bother you to do a small edit that I dare not do myself because I have a conflict of interest with the subject matter. For a few years, my brother had a nice little Wikipedia biography page. After some review, it was decided that his accomplishments did not warrant a full biography, but rather belonged as snippets on pages referring to events he was involved with. You can see the final resolution of these discussions here (now archived). I dare not add these snippets myself, and I don't think the editors involved with the discussions seemed very interested in doing it. So that brings me to kindly asking you.

Specifically, would you mind adding a short snippet about my brother being first in line to the Grant Park Victory Speech, 2008 page, as was suggested by the other editors? I know it's a small little thing, but it meets Wikipedia Notability. I don't want to tell you what to add because of my CoI, but I will give you the references necessary for adding it. Here is a cache of my brother's Wikipedia biography so you can get an idea of what was written about the event before. Here are the key citations MTV, NBC, Ekstra Bladet (Danish News), Público (Portuguese News) and the Chicago Tribune (important because it revisits his experience a year later.

Source verifiability

Hi. here is written about verifiability, and I was wondering, there are a lot of non-authoritative sources which can be used as sources for given informations. The main point is verifiability, not the source's authority. E.g. if a celebrity has written something on her twitter, it can be pretty much used in wikipedia as source in her article. Why am I addressing with this issue to you? Well, because you're admin and this is not just about my issue here, it will have subsequent effect (for me at least). So to get straight ahead, he had removed my edit saying that this youtube link isn't verifiable, but how can't it be verifiable if the person, about which the article is, herself is saying it? And this is pretty much important information, as they don't live together, if there was a written version available I would add it, but we only have video-version available (youtube link), so I fail to see how it's not verifiable, I'm in advance aware what this user will say to me if I try to reach the consensus with him. That youtube-links shouldn't be used as sources, but given information, it can be used in this case. What will you suggest? It's not a "challenged" source in this case, because the person herself is saying this, not her lookalike, she herself. In the end, I'd like to go ahead and make an assumption what these rules (about source verifiability) where created for? One of the reason is to avoid lies, in some blog someone might publish an information about someone, which is can be purely made up (non-reliable), but in this case, is there a doubt that this information isn't true? ITN/C headings levels

I have no particular objection to hitting the equals sign a couple of extra times, but is there a reason why new nominations are headed as 4th level? For what purpose are level three headings being held in reserve? An editor seeing the date as a level 2 heading will, in keeping with normal wiki practice, make the heading below that a level 3 one by default. My experience this morning, of noticing the level of the date heading more than I did the little request above the editbox, is probably not unusual. So long as there is consistency, the ToC display is identical: the current practice forces the software to simulate the raising of each level 4 header.

You did no wrong in enforcing the rule that I missed this morning: I'm simply querying the relevance of the convention. I would suggest that as the most active admin on ITN you would be perfectly entitled to be bold in regard to this, but if you think it needs wider discussion, by all means transfer my comments to WT:ITN.

On another issue, would it be possible to make the ITN/C archive searchable, as the WT:ITN archive already is?

Arguments

I believe that your statements regarding the DYK mess may have a basis which is not wholly accurate; in particular, there may be a conflation of multiple incidents.

There is the issue of optimal phrasing of hooks based on wholly fictional content, of what counts as 'real-world content'. On this issue, I've already conceded the point that if a hook gets all the way through the approval process, then the question of 'real-world content' is not a sufficient reason to remove it from the queue.

But there is also the issue of factual accuracy, which I hope you will agree is far more serious. I had genuine concerns about that hook, and I had just been verified my understanding about the proper procedure for removing a hook from the prep queue (as opposed to from the actual template) -- and isn't the prep queue a suitable location for raising last-minute concerns? Dombrovskis is looking to his left (our right), which tends to draw readers' eyes away from the section's text. (The opposite is true for the left-hand column.)

The image that I used is of insufficient resolution for most applications (and therefore inferior, indeed), but it's suitable for use as a 100px thumbnail.

Hi BorgQueen. I was just wondering... Because of your name-space protection applied here, does it concern you that article Vlad gheorghiu now exists? The new article of course, can't be moved to its proper noun space, but because of its obvious lack of independent notability and weak sourcing, I'm left uncertain whether requesting a page-move is really worth the bother. It occurred to me as well, that redirecting Vlad gheorghiu to its parent band article may also have the potential of being problematic if not protected. Why exactly do I have to nominate the Golden Globe results for inclusion in the In the News template? From what I understand, there are many topics, certain award shows among them, that inherently meet the importance criteria, and do not need to be voted on to gain consensus. It does not necessarily mean that the particular article is adequately updated. It is true that the Golden Globe is listed at Wikipedia:In the news/Recurring items, however the page states: Items which are listed on this page are considered to have already satisfied the 'importance' criterion for inclusion on ITN, every time they occur. However, the relevant article(s) will still have to be updated appropriately and proposed on the candidates page before being posted. ITN sun image

I'm guessing the reason you did not use File:Far side of the Sun 3D STEREO crop.jpg is because it was taken before the satellites reached 180 degrees of separation and it is therefore not a complete image of the far side. Frankly, I'm a bit peeved that NASA made this announcement without making such an image available. However, I still think that image is superior to one from 2007, as many people will expect the lead image to have something to do with the announcement. The 3D anaglyph, although from STEREO, is not a product of the situation that has been in the news for the past few days. I'd suggest the recent image and "preliminary view pictured" or something along those lines. What do you think?--Chaser 14:04, 8 February 2011 (UTC)

Regarding the general issue, past discussions have shown consensus that we generally should illustrate the newest item when feasible. Variety is important too (and we wouldn't want four hours of one image followed by two days of another), but we can revert to an earlier image if a subsequent one stagnates (especially if neither item appears at the top by this point, rendering that aspect irrelevant). —David Levy 00:21, 28 February 2011 (UTC)

I did just revert you on .xxx for a couple of reasons. 1) The mention of censorship didn't appear to be exactly in the refs. 2) The section in question is just about the ICANN/ICM interaction.

There are plenty of opinions on all sides as noted in the 'Background' section. Rather than just re-revert perhaps you'd like to try and improve that. Or make a more balanced 'Reaction' section? Myself I feel the link to Wikinews is probably sufficient. Wwwhatsup (talk) 11:21, 21 March 2011 (UTC)

Actually the mention of censorship does appear exactly in the refs: "Industry members say they fear they could be subject to arbitrary censorship by governments and even by a new board overseeing the dot-xxx domain." Admin assistance/advice required

I plucked your name from Wikipedia:Admins willing to make difficult blocks. I have a problem with user:Racepacket who is threatened User:LauraHale, a newcomer to Wikipedia. Knowing that she is a PhD student, he first raised unfounded and utterly absurd allegations of plagiarism in a Good Article review. Then he demanded that she email him scans of her sources, which I warned him was not on and would be considered harassment. He attacked on meta in the (mistaken) belief that she was an employee, which I consider meets the definition of harassment. Now he continues to fish for some kind of evidence of misconduct. All the while, he is also defending other allegations over on Wikipedia talk:Requests for comment/Racepacket 2. I think he losing all perspective and well, just going bonkers. Understandably, User:LauraHale is very upset.

For the first time ever I feel myself reaching for the block button. Your advice on this matter would be much appreciated. My apologies for dragging you into this wikidrama. Hawkeye7 (talk) 21:52, 25 March 2011 (UTC)

ITN removal

Hi borg queen, I wanted to give you a heads up to let you know that I removed the story from ITN about the head of the IMF. I'm sorry I didn't do this with prior discussion or any sort of consensus but I would rather be bold and have my change reverted than to leave something I felt was inapproriate. I know it went through the process, however allegations are simply that. This hasn't even progressed to becoming a court case or anything as such. Such high profile equivalents such as Chirac/Berlusconi have only ever made it to the front page when they have gone to court and I think that we should be careful when publicizing a story such as this. This wasn't a decision based on any policy just what I felt was common sense. If you feel that there are no problems then feel to revert me, i certainly wont force the issue :) Just had alarm bells in my head and wanted you to just have a second think before letting this one go. I think I did encounter an edit conflict as you suggest, but from what I can tell, according to the diff you provided the difference in text between the two versions was only 151 bytes, which mostly corresponds to the removal of this cruft: The campaign focused on Greig, describing her as an animal lover who frequently goes to beauty salons.. This is not "quite a bit of text", unless you are referring to the following paragraphs:

• "He added that he loves his brother..."
• "A US District Court judge found on September 5, 2006..."

Neither of these were removed, however. According to the diff in question, the former was condensed into the previous paragraph (by me) and the latter moved (I think by a different editor) further down the article. Hi there, I noticed you swung by Collaborative fiction recently with a quick edit - sorry to bother you, but did you notice anything you think should be worked on while you were there? I've been making some quite big changes to it but found it difficult to get much feedback from other editors, so I though I might ask you on your way past...
