November Articles for creation backlog drive

Hello Buidhe:

WikiProject Articles for creation is holding a month long Backlog Drive!
The goal of this drive is to reduce the backlog of unreviewed drafts to less than 2 months outstanding reviews from the current 4+ months. Bonus points will be given for reviewing drafts that have been waiting more than 30 days. The drive is running from 1 November 2023 through 30 November 2023.

You may find Category:AfC pending submissions by age or other categories and sorting helpful.

Barnstars will be given out as awards at the end of the drive.

There is a backlog of over 2300 pages, so start reviewing drafts. We're looking forward to your help! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:23, 31 October 2023 (UTC)

Template needs moving

Hello Buidhe, I have moved Genocide against Palestinians to Palestinian genocide accusation per a requested move. I think there is an ARBPIA related template, maybe an edit notice, that requires moving also. Unfortunately I can’t find the template already. Can you help move it also to fit the new page? starship.paint (RUN) 00:37, 1 November 2023 (UTC)

starship.paint I have no idea bout arbcom related templates, can't help you with that. (t · c) buidhe 00:39, 1 November 2023 (UTC)
I found it, Template:Editnotices/Page/Genocide against Palestinians, are you able to move it? starship.paint (RUN) 00:57, 1 November 2023 (UTC)

Bup/N drug classif. change.

Noted the change - are you sure on that one?

I'm simply not sure it is in that class - it is not a major issue - clinically I'd never prescribe it with that at the back of my mind - no big deal - wondered why you changes it?
Many thanks. BeingObjective (talk) 15:17, 5 November 2023 (UTC)

The main indication of this drug is for opioid use disorder, and I was under the impression that this would be considered a subspecialty of psychiatry. I've reverted the edit if there is doubt that this is the case. (t · c) buidhe 15:26, 5 November 2023 (UTC)
Understood and many thanks - you are correct - but I'd state the majority of scripts are for folks who end up 'addicted' as a consequence treatment for long term chronic pain - and it will happen to the majority of us - just the way our brains are wired - there might be an official classification - I tend to focus on a patient rather than the politics of the moment. Your revert

Buidhe, I'm sure you made a mistake by reverting me here. Your edit summary on Confino does not match the content you removed, which was unrelated to Confino. Perhaps you intended to remove something else. Please fix, thanks. starship.paint (RUN) 15:58, 12 November 2023 (UTC)

Correct, I was trying to remove the content on Confino that I got a notification about, but it seems not to be in the current version of the article. (t · c) buidhe 16:16, 12 November 2023 (UTC)
Thank you Buidhe. Turns out you did remove the content on Confino originally, it was a double removal and I didn’t notice the second part when I posted the message above. So it’s out since you didn’t restore it. Apologies for the confusion caused. starship.paint (RUN) 16:23, 12 November 2023 (UTC)

Dyk help

I had the bright idea of trying to do a Dyk nom on mobile, and I got this mess: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Template%3ADid_you_know_nominations%2FLuochahai_City. As someone more experienced, could you please help me fix it? Source editing isn't my strong suit.

Query

Hello, Buidhe,

I'm wondering why you moved a main space redirect to Draft space, Draft:Diabesity and then created an article on that page. What was your thinking here? Why not build your article on top of the existing page? Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 02:52, 16 November 2023 (UTC)

Hi Liz, what I did was 1) create an article at Draft:Diabesity, 2) pageswap with the existing redirect. I am not sure if there is an official guideline, but I have done this before when I'm creating an article 100% from scratch and there is an existing redirect. I feel that it makes the article history clearer because otherwise the redirect creator is credited as the article creator when they did not have anything to do with the article content. DYK for Starvation (crime)

On 18 November 2023, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Starvation (crime), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the killing of hundreds of thousands of Soviet civilians by starvation in the siege of Leningrad was ruled not criminal by an American court? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Starvation (crime). You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Starvation (crime)), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Help with prose

Hi! Could you please have a look at prose in a couple of paragraphs in Janko Drašković. I would not normally ask directly for a copyedit, but the two passages (the final paragraph of "Family, education and military career" subsection and the final paragraph of "Political career until 1830" subsection have been added to the article undergoing a GAN review after a GOCE copyedit and the reviewer asked for a copyedit directly. I'll understand completely if this is not possible right now, but I thought to ask just in case. Cheers Tomobe03 (talk) 10:27, 19 November 2023 (UTC)

WCNA 2023 Barncompass
Thank you for attending WCNA 2023. It was nice to meet a contributor who submits contents to WikiJournal for publication and for me to hear what they think about our work. I am awarding this barncompass to you. (Barncompass originated in Wikivoyage as a response to Wikipedia's barnstar. Since everyone travelled long distance for the conference and would have no doubt pulled out a map app at some point, awarding a barncompass is probably as fitting as a barnstar.) Regarding the Armenian Genocide recognition map recolouring

Hi Buidhe,

I'm MtPenguinMonster, the creator of the recoloured version of your Armenian Genocide recognition map. I created the recolouring after a colour-blind reader told me that the map was difficult to read. I chose the colours blue and black as per H:Colorblind to make the image more accessible. I notice you reverted my edits introducing the recoloured map to the articles, claiming that your colour scheme is clearer to 97% of readers. While I agree that using red and green is intuitive for non-colour-blind readers, the shades your map uses are inaccessible to people with red-green colour-blindness. I suggest that you choose a more accessible colour scheme, such as one suggested by H:Colorblind or Commons:Commons:Creating accessible illustrations, or better yet, find a way to construct the map such that colour is not the only method for distinguishing the countries that recognise, are neutral on, or deny the Armenian Genocide.

--MtPenguinMonster (talk) 11:06, 12 December 2023 (UTC)

While improving accessibility is important if it can be done without affecting the reading experience of most readers, I don't think it is an improvement to make changes that are negative for the majority of readers in order to benefit a small fraction. I wish there was some setting so that we could have two options for an image and display one as default and another if color blind option is selected in preferences. (t · c) buidhe 15:11, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
Recoloured version
I've produced a new version of the recoloured image which uses more intuitive colours while remaining accessible. I chose bluish-green and vermillion from Commons:Commons:Creating accessible illustrations. Hopefully this version is beneficial to everyone.
--MtPenguinMonster (talk) 05:08, 13 December 2023 (UTC)
I have no objection to this color scheme. (t · c) buidhe 05:20, 13 December 2023 (UTC)

ECvHR, ECtHR

I appreciate that examples of use don't make valid citations, but this academic paper seems to demonstrate the point, I think?

Do you think I should cite that in my footnote? 𝕁𝕄𝔽 (talk) 19:50, 16 December 2023 (UTC)

Footnotes tax reader attention. In order to make it worthwhile to inform them of an uncommon acronym on a a different article subject it would need to be common (say30% as common). In this case it seems to be much less common than that. Just being mentioned in one source hardly qualifies for inclusion. (t · c) buidhe 22:17, 16 December 2023 (UTC)
JMF (talk · contribs) (t · c) buidhe 22:20, 16 December 2023 (UTC)
https://www.google.com/search?q=%22ECvHR%22 has many examples. I chose that one because it was a very explicit example in an academic paper. As I already said, I am fully aware that examples of use are not valid citations.
Neither form is going to be common since it is only needed when it is is needed. IMO, we need to respond to the begged question: since the same abbreviation is used for both the Court and the Convention, how is a reader supposed to know which one is intended? (On Wikipedia, it is easy because we have hyperlinks but that is not the norm on publications in general. And we only do it on first mention.) To me, a footnote strikes the right balance between ignoring the issue v very intrusive inline text.
If you still feel that what I have done is undue then of course initiate a wp:BRD discussion. I don't feel strongly about this other than believing the general principle that we should be as helpful to readers as we can without burying them in a mass of incidental detail. Where to draw the line is a subjective judgement that I guess is only resolved by consensus. 𝕁𝕄𝔽 (talk) 00:35, 17 December 2023 (UTC)
It's not remotely common though. The vast majority of sources that mention both and use ECtHR / ECHR or abbreviate without acronyms "The Court", "The Convention", etc.
You can easily check that it's not commonly used:
  • "ecvhr" "European convention on human rights" 48 scholar hits
  • "echr" "European convention on human rights" 60,000 scholar hits
Even if 90% of the "ECHR" hits are bogus and 100% of the "ECvHR" hits are legitimate, there is no way this acronym in any way meets the criteria for inclusion.
Only common abbreviations would make any sense to include. There is no evidence even a single reader has been confused by this. (t · c) buidhe 02:59, 17 December 2023 (UTC)

Regarding article "Legality of the Israeli occupation of Palestine"

I was very impressed by the long list of articles you contributed and their very documented content. Nevertheless, reading the article "Legality of the Israeli occupation of Palestine" I was surprised to learn that there is not even a single reference to the Oslo agreement and all the subsequents attempts to end the Israeli occupation. These omissions , either on purpose or not , are making this article very, very biased and misleading. I wish you "Happy New Year" and a less biased article writing for year 2024! Wiki-pimpernel (talk) 05:42, 1 January 2024 (UTC)

Wiki-pimpernel My approach to this article was the same as to all other articles. I looked for sources specifically discussing the stated topic. The Oslo accords and other talks are not prominently mentioned in them, probably because they did not actually provide for the end of the Israeli occupation. If you can find sources that disagree, please be my guest and improve the article. (t · c) buidhe 06:32, 1 January 2024 (UTC)

FAC review request

Hi! I've had my article 1964 Illinois House of Representatives election at FAC for a bit now; would you consider reviewing? Thanks :) Elli (talk | contribs) 19:00, 1 January 2024 (UTC)

Elli, it looks like the image and source reviews are already done and I rarely do content reviews, sorry. (t · c) buidhe 01:16, 2 January 2024 (UTC)
ah, thanks for looking (wasn't sure if Generalissima's review was sufficient for the source stuff since this is my first nomination and that's usually quite strict?) Elli (talk | contribs) 14:58, 2 January 2024 (UTC)

arbpia

Happy new year. Who decides whether something is under arbpia? Can you or I decide on our own? Or must an admin decide, or some other process? And must the article be so designated on its talk page, etc? 2603:7000:2101:AA00:1C4E:D0E0:D878:4811 (talk) 09:36, 2 January 2024 (UTC)

While admins would decide if there is reasonable doubt, in this case it seems pretty clear cut that the content is related to the Israel-Palestine conflict. Feel free to ask any admin if you want a second opinion. (t · c) buidhe 15:06, 2 January 2024 (UTC)
So, I can just revert if I think an entry falls under arbpia? Even if the article is not so designated on the talk page? That's ok?--2603:7000:2101:AA00:A4BA:3861:4D16:1175 (talk) 08:28, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
No, you cannot edit in arbpia topics because you are not logged in and extended confirmed. If you keep trying to edit in this topic area, all edits can be reverted for no reason and your IP can be blocked. If you want to make an edit, instead use {{Edit extended-protected}} on the talk page. Sorry I don't make the rules. (t · c) buidhe 08:30, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
Thanks. So, any logged in and extended confirmed editor can just revert if the editor thinks an entry falls under arbpia? Even if the article is not so designated on the talk page? --2603:7000:2101:AA00:A4BA:3861:4D16:1175 (talk) 08:58, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
If an editor abuses this to revert edits on other topics, they should be reported to an admin, who will probably block them. The key point is the topic of an edit; the presence of a banner on the talk page is not required. (t · c) buidhe 09:01, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
I'm not anticipating an abusive editor, but assuming a good faith editor. So the answer is yes I imagine, as long as the editor is a non-abusive good faith extended confirmed editor who believes that an entry falls under arbpia, even if there is no arbpia designation of the article. Thanks. 2603:7000:2101:AA00:A4BA:3861:4D16:1175 (talk) 09:04, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
If there's a dispute whether content falls into that category, I suggest contacting an admin who could provide guidance. (t · c) buidhe 09:05, 3 January 2024 (UTC)

Nomination of Zionism as settler colonialism for deletion

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Zionism as settler colonialism is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Zionism as settler colonialism until a consensus is reached, and anyone, including you, is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article until the discussion has finished.

RadioactiveBoulevardier (talk) 08:41, 3 January 2024 (UTC)

If this is in the arbpia area, can only an extended confirmed editor discuss it at the article for deletion as a consensus is being reached, discussing policies and guidelines of concern?--2603:7000:2101:AA00:A4BA:3861:4D16:1175 (talk) 09:01, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
That's correct. (t · c) buidhe 09:04, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
What's weird is that there are two banners that come up if one seeks to edit the article itself. But none if one seeks to weigh in on policies and guidelines and concern. Perhaps that's seen as helpful - as it is not creating article text, and may be enlightening? As the article for deletion review is about policies and guidelines, not about voting. So no harm done if the editor is not confirmed, but raises good points. Not like editing an article, where they could cause harm. If we wanted to have the same banners and blocks on the article for deletion pages, we could easily have them automatically - no? So perhaps it is ok. 2603:7000:2101:AA00:A4BA:3861:4D16:1175 (talk) 09:09, 3 January 2024 (UTC)

Holocaust in Greece

Hello @Buidhe

Hope that you're ok.

You've made a huge contribution to the article on the Holocaust in Greece. Well done. Your work is invaluable!

I myself am a specialist in the subject and I'd like to add a few more elements and make a few changes (if possible).

You've probably seen, I've added a map. I hope I've included all the information correctly and that my additions comply with Wikipedia rules (I'm a new contributor). Don't hesitate to let me know if there's anything wrong. I really hope that together we can provide readers with a clear and accurate article.

I've noticed a few mistakes, such as the boat of Jews from Rhodes that stopped at Samos (not Leros) to pick up the 98 Jews from Kos. Other small corrections need to be made. My book provides all the information you need, with precise sources. I don't want to delete your work without discussing it first.

Happy to chat with you.

Best,

Anastasios Anastasios Karababas (talk) 18:09, 22 January 2024 (UTC)

Anastasios Karababas,
Thanks so much for your edits and particularly adding the image. One thing I would recommend is contacting the Volunteer Response Team to verify that you are the copyright holder of the image and have permission to post it on Wikimedia Commons.
You changed "1,661 Jews from Rhodes" to "1,673 Jews from Rhodes". The latter figure may be in your book, but I don't know which page so I can't cite it. I double checked the sources I cited and it seems there is some discrepancy in this figure so I've changed it to "around 1,700".
Regarding the Leros/Samos discrepancy, I checked the sources I had cited and neither of them says it was Samos; McElligott says on page 58, "The ships stopped at Leros where they met with a small transport of ninety- four Jews from the island of Kos." Bowman states: "The boats then left for Kos, where 96 Jews were added to the transport." I know McElligott is writing a book about the Jews from Rhodes and Kos so hopefully if he is mistaken, it will be corrected.
You also added some content about the escape of Jews via Turkey but that was already covered elsewhere in the article. (t · c) buidhe 19:26, 22 January 2024 (UTC)
Hey @Buidhe
Thank you for your message and for the information.
I have sent a message to wikipedia for the map to make sure there is no problem. As I created it myself, I think it's OK but you never know.
For the Jews of Rhodes and Kos: according to the Jewish community of Rhodes-Kos, the boat stopped at Samos, where the two communities met. You can find all the information with sources in my book "In the Footsteps of the Jews of Greece" p. 202-203, p. 206 as well as the website of the Jewish community of Rhodes-Kos. You will see that the figures and events correspond. In particular, here is the link to Samos (last paragraph):
https://jewishrhodes.org/german-occupation-holocaust-kos/
It's a very complicated job, because the data and sometimes the historians contradict each other concerning Holocaust in Greece. What's more, many of the archives have disappeared, which is why it's possible to make mistakes. There are new elements that change a number of things. I think it's important for the Wikipedia article to give the different versions so that the reader has an overall view.
Have a good day.
Best,

Centre Against Expulsions

Hello Buidhe, you made some edits on this Centre. It is working in Germany, but as a private entity (with "Wanderausstellungen"), not as a state owned museum. I think the article in the english WP does not show this. I have no interest in this centre but for instance in this small research libray in Potsdam see https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lepsiushaus (I think one of the best centers in Germany for armenian issues) best wishes --Cholo Aleman (talk) 10:49, 25 January 2024 (UTC)

Hello, Buidhe,

One of the categories in your nomination was not tagged as being part of this CFD discussion and I assume the category creator wasn't notified. It would be great if you could take care of this sooner rather than later. Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 01:12, 31 January 2024 (UTC)

Liz I don't understand the issue. I only nominated one category, the one named. If there was another one added later it wasn't by me. (t · c) buidhe 02:49, 31 January 2024 (UTC)

Paramilitary punishment attacks in Northern Ireland

Hi. I was reading Feldman (2003) which is concerned with paramilitary violence in the North. One passage notably read as it follows: "The basic forms of punishment: to start off is the kneecap, but it’s very rarely that it is a kneecap. It is only on rare occasions that they put the gun to the back of the knee and blow the actual kneecap out. It’s usually a kneecapping that consists of getting shot in the leg, the thigh, the bottom leg. It depends on how severe the crime. If you want to get kneecapped, usually a rape would involve getting kneecapped. There been very, very few actually kneecapped..." Futher details of the methods are included. This is testimony rather than Feldman's own writings. I was wondering if it - or the article itself (https://www.researchgate.net/publication/31399052_Political_Terror_and_the_Technologies_of_Memory_Excuse_Sacrifice_Commodification_and_Actuarial_Moralities) - is of relevance? DMT Biscuit (talk) 21:47, 2 February 2024 (UTC)

DMT Biscuit Yeah, the terminology is kind of confusing. It's often called "kneecapping" when there is a gunshot wound to any area near the knee, but as the wikipedia article states: true kneecappings "became less popular over time because the disability and mortality incurred was unpopular with the [republican] community. It was replaced with low-velocity shots aimed at the soft tissue in the lower limbs. As a result, "kneecapping" is frequently a misnomer because by the 2010s most injuries targeted the femur or popliteal area rather than the knee joint." (t · c) buidhe 01:28, 3 February 2024 (UTC)
