The issue you raised is serious, and I see two milieus and one concrete proposal passing. The rest may not reach the consensus. However, I won't be able to aide the closure. Lately, I've seen some discussions requiring more than one closer to provide a lengthy, summarizing rationale, like the WP:PC2016. Does this discussion need just one closer or more? --George Ho (talk) 13:20, 1 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I'd go for a 3-person close. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 13:38, 1 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Is relisting necessary? Seems that the volunteers are still working on the closure. --George Ho (talk) 06:30, 2 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I now regret the structuring of it, so would be wary of just relisting it. I have been busy with not enough mental stamina to devote to this currently..Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 06:33, 2 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm.... you can withdraw some separate milieux and proposals that receive major opposition, while you leave the rest open. Or I can close some of those without a rationale. Thoughts? --George Ho (talk) 18:40, 2 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I am happy for you to do that - whatever it takes to get something workable out of the pages. I will be pretty busy over the next few days. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 22:05, 2 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Phew. I closed milieus 1 and 5 easily. Milieu 2 wasn't easy to summarize, but I concluded it as "no consensus". --George Ho (talk) 01:20, 3 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Another update: Milieu 3, proposal 1 and proposal 2 are closed by Winged Blades of Godric. Give Godric some thanks. --George Ho (talk) 21:24, 18 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

March 2017 WikiCup newsletter

[edit]

And so ends the first round of the competition, with 4 points required to qualify for round 2. It would have been 5 points, but when a late entrant was permitted to join the contest in February, a promise was made that his inclusion would not result in the exclusion of any other competitor. To achieve this, the six entrants that had the lowest positive score of 4 points have been added to the 64 people who otherwise would have qualified. As a result, some of the groups have nine contestants rather than eight. Our top four scorers in round 1 were:

  • Scotland Cas Liber, last year's winner, led the field with two featured articles on birds and a total score of 674.
  • European Union Iry-Hor, a WikiCup newcomer, came next with a featured article, a good article and a tally of 282 bonus points for a score of 517. All these points came from the article Nyuserre Ini, an Ancient Egyptian pharaoh,
  • Japan 1989, another WikiCup newcomer, was in joint third place at 240. 1989 has claimed points for two featured lists and one good article relating to anime and comedy series, all of which were awarded bonus points.
  • South Australia Peacemaker67 shared third place with five good articles and thirteen good article reviews, mostly on naval vessels. He is also new to the competition.

The largest number of DYKs have been submitted by Vivvt and The C of E, who each claimed for seven, and MBlaze Lightning achieved eight articles at ITN. Carbrera and Peacemaker67 each claimed for five GAs and Krishna Chaitanya Velaga was well out in front for GARs, having reviewed 32. No featured pictures, featured topics or good topics yet, but we have achieved three featured articles and a splendid total of fifty good articles.

So, on to the second round. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 1 but before the start of round 2 can be claimed in round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is a good article candidate, a featured process, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. FAC Palais Rohan

[edit]

Hello Cas, I'd like to have your opinion on what I shall do now: maintain the candidacy (Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Palais Rohan, Strasbourg/archive1) or retire it? In any case, I could still expand the article by some sentences, but on the other hand, and as I alluded to in the presentation, I don't want to put too much detail into it − otherwise, I will end up quoting the book by Étienne Martin from the first page to the last! Do you think I should give up for now and come back in a while with a longer version? It won't be that much longer, that's for sure! Thank you, --Edelseider (talk) 09:33, 6 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Maintain it. Take a deep breath and carry on. Just maybe comment that you've found it a bit heavy going but really want to end up on good terms. A thorough reviewer is a blessing about 95% of the time. For a laugh, take a look at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Redback spider/archive1. Now that was an exercise in endurance.
I am a bit of a slob and not big on detail. Once you do a couple of these you get the hang of it much better. It's also about making these articles look schmick as well - like a proper reference. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 09:52, 6 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Again, thank you. I'll just wait, then. Have a nice day (or night; you are definitely in another time zone than me) --Edelseider (talk) 09:59, 6 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

4th GA Cup - The Final

[edit]
WikiProject Good Articles's 2016 GA Cup - Final

Hello, GA Cup competitors!

Sunday, February 26 saw the end of Round 3. Shearonink finished in first with 616 points, which is more than the point totals for all the other competitors combined! In second place, Krishna Chaitanya Velaga earned an impressive 152 points, followed by Sturmvogel_66 in third with 111 points. Chris troutman and Kees08 each received a wild-card and were able to advance to the Final Round. There was a major error on the part of the judges, and initially, 8 users were advanced instead of 5. This has been corrected, and we sincerely apologize for this confusion.

In Round 3, 71 reviews were completed! At the beginning of this GA Cup, the longest wait was over 7 months; at the end of Round 3, the longest wait is still holding steady at a little over 6 months, the same as for the previous round. By the end of all three Rounds, the total number of nominations increased slightly - this suggests that users are more willing to nominate, knowing that their articles will be reviewed. We hope to see all remaining users fighting it out in the Final so we can keep tackling the backlog.

In the Final Round, the user with the highest score will be the winner. The Final has already started and will end on March 31st at 23:59:59 UTC. Information about Finals and the pools can be found here.

Good luck and have fun!

Cheers from Figureskatingfan, 3family6, Jaguar, and MrWooHoo.

FAC William Pūnohu White

[edit]

Hello, I don't know if you came across Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/William Pūnohu White/archive1. It was closed today because of no traffic and only 1 review after a month. The quality of the article is FAC material in my opinion. I did not ask anybody (except two users) in the initial run to review it since I was trusting that it will receive reviews. Now I am asking a couple of people here and there to see if there is enough interest to renominate it again as recommended by the closing admin. I will only go ahead and renominate it once I find a few people who wants to give it a review. Please let me know if you are interested. Thanks either way.--KAVEBEAR (talk) 01:32, 11 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Current discussion of Quality assessment at Village Pump

[edit]

There is a discussion at Village Pump (policy) that assessment of WP:Quality assessment for A-Class, B-Class, C-Class and Start-Stub articles is long antiquated and of limited valued for future purposes of Wikipedia. As you are involved in the day-to-day listing and de-listing of articles from these classes to peer review status possibly you could take a glance at the discussion of comments there [1]. Common ostrich is the IOC name, and since Somali Ostrich has been elevated to species, ostrich needs to be differentiated. It would be a similar move to common warthog when desert warthog was elevated. I'll disambig at the top of the page to link ostrich to common ostrich once the article is renamed. Common ostrich is locked, so I'm wondering if you can delete and move? I'm not an admin......Pvmoutside (talk)

4th GA Cup - Wrap Up

[edit]
WikiProject Good Articles's 2016 GA Cup - Wrap Up

Hello, GA Cup competitors!

Saturday, April 1 concluded the 2016-2017 GA Cup. 64 reviews were completed by our finalists. Although the backlog increased by 42 over the reviewing period instead of declining, the increase suggests that the contest is encouraging editors to nominate articles for review.

Congratulations to Shearonink, who is the winner of the Cup, finishing with 672 points! Once again, just as in last round, this is more than the point totals for all the other competitors combined! It was a close race for second place between Krishna Chaitanya Velaga, who achieved 164 points, and Sturmvogel_66, who earned 150. Though Sturmvogel_66 reviewed one more article than Krishna Chaitanya Velaga, Krishna Chaitanya Velaga managed to earn 14 points more due to reviewing older articles. Our two wildcard competitors, Kees08 and Chris troutman, came in fourth and fifth, respectively.

There were some bumps in the competition this time: The sign-up deadline and the first round were both extended due to fewer competitors signing up then was planned for. And there were delays in tallying points and getting out the newsletter. The judges apologize for this latter difficulty. Lastly, mid-way through the competition we bid farewell to Zwerg Nase, who stepped down from their position as judge due to other commitments. Information about the Final can be found here.

Thank you to all of our competitors, and congrats to our winners!

Cheers from Figureskatingfan, 3family6, Jaguar, and MrWooHoo.

FAC source review request

[edit]

Hi Cas. I hope you're doing alright. Thank you for doing the source review when I nominated The American Bible Challenge at FAC. I'm writing to ask you, if you're not too busy, if you'd be willing to do the same for my current nomination of The Chase (U.S. game show)? I understand that you are quite an active Wikipedian and likely have several other things to do, so I understand if this is not possible. However, the reason I'm asking for a review right now is because I am leaving for a long vacation on Saturday and am really hoping to get this nomination promoted before I leave, so I'd greatly appreciate it if you could step in and do this for me. Again, if you're too busy with other commitments, I completely understand. Cheers, --Bcschneider53 (talk) 22:11, 11 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Cas, we normally work the basis that no FA writer gets two TFAs in the same month. I want to run Vampire, because it's an area we are short on, whereas we have plenty of birds. That means your cockatoo won't run this month, but as far as I'm concerned it can stay at TFAR. Perhaps you should elevate vampire finch to FA standard and combine the themes (: Jimfbleak - talk to me? 15:05, 20 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

(a) I like horror films and find it much much easier to review things I am interested in, and (b) for whatever reason, folks review my material pretty quickly (which someone had a quiet word to me about), so I felt that was a bit of an advantage so I decided to give some other competitors a bit of a bump in the right direction. Fish to common English names

[edit]

Cas, I've also been doing some work in the Fishproject, and notice they use English names rather than scientific names for their article names....The following are locked. Can you delete and move? Also, rather than bothering you and Jim, I was thinking about starting the process to be an admin? Can you tell me what the steps are?......Thanks.......

*Notropis dorsalis to Bigmouth shiner

*Campostoma pauciradii to Bluefin stoneroller

As one moves further away from birds, a lower proportion of things have common names...so do all the notropis fish have common names? Do you worry if a bunch are left at scientific names and others at common names? Ditto snakes (a lot of snakes were moved to scientific names some time ago). Is it something we need to sort out at an RfC level before wholesale moves...etc. Let me look and offer some thoughts about likelihood of adminship..... Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 11:50, 24 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Cas for the info on becoming an admin. My request is up on Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Optional RfA candidate poll
Alright, for fun with fish names...have a look at Yellowfin bream and my recent fumble (see contribs)...now wouldn't it be better if they were all at genus names. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 23:43, 24 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
In Australia we had to do this because many popular food fish have different names in each goddamn state...Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 23:44, 24 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I know plants and insects are at scientific name as opposed to English for the very reason you list yellowfin bream......Notropis is mostly English, except where there is no English name (only a few species). I know fish are over 33k for species, and likely to grow. The change to English names above are redirects only, so no multiple species names for any of the above. In my opinion, I don't worry that some species articles have English names, while others are scientific names. Generally, English names are easier for google searches, but scientific names are more exact, especially when multiple species use the same name.......It looks like the Fish project standardized on English names, rather than scientific ones, which is why I am asking for the changes above. I could be convinced to standardize on all scientific names, but if the public does a search for goldfish for example, I think people would be confused if the Wikipedia page showed Carassius auratus as the first page of choice from us.......We should think how the public searches pages instead of scientists in my opinion......Pvmoutside (talk) 01:37, 25 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Also, as a naming standard for fish, we could use Fishbase as Wikipedia's standard for taxonomy and/or English names as we are using the IOC. I'll put a discussion up on the Wikiproject fish page to see if I get any bites....Pvmoutside (talk) 03:27, 25 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Cas, see what I did with riffle minnow. Fishbase calls the American species riffle minnow, and leaves the Eurasian species with only the scientific name. The IUCN rates the American species, but not the Eurasian one, however other species in the Eurasian species' genus are called sprilins........I'd like to leave the riffle minnow as is for now, and see if I get pushback......Pvmoutside (talk) 14:25, 26 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
My initial thought was why does the US one get the Guernsey and the European one not...but then I realized the latter has multiple names. Still this can be a colossal headache....Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 03:21, 27 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Pvmoutside: my thinking is that reptiles are a helluva lot easier than fish to pin down to one name...so recommend getting more experience there and working down through amphibians etc. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 03:22, 27 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
After birds, I kinda like fish, but I see your point.....I spent a little time with the goldfish genus Carassius which was a mess. Hopefully I put it in a better place......I may get into some reptiles if I have time.....Pvmoutside (talk) 19:00, 27 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Too soon to reprotect Kill 'Em All

[edit]

The IP may have just made a mistake. For some reason, Cyberbot II made a mistake and the page was blanked after its protection expired, and it was simply restoring it. The IP did put some that didn't belong there, but I don't think that was intentional. It was not vandalism. I believe there is not enough disruptive behavior yet to reconstitute any protection. Please reconsider. dannymusiceditor Speak up! 15:22, 27 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Could you userfy Template:Infobox unbiunium for me? I'd like a restored copy in my userspace (User:Double sharp/Template:Infobox unbiunium will do). Now that the periodic table is complete up to element 118, enough people are looking at 119, 120, and 121 that restoring the last of these may be reasonable now. May 2017 WikiCup newsletter

[edit]

The second round of the competition has now closed, with just under 100 points being required to qualify for round 3. YellowEvan just scraped into the next round with 98 points but we have to say goodbye to the thirty or so competitors who didn't achieve this threshold; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia. Our top scorers in round 2 were:

  • Scotland Cas Liber, led the field with five featured articles, four on birds and one on astronomy, and a total score of 2049, half of which came from bonus points.
  • Japan 1989 was in second place with 826 points, 466 of which were bonus points. 1989 has claimed points mostly relating to anime and Japanese-related articles.
  • South Australia Peacemaker67 took third place with two FAs, one GA and seven GARs, mostly on naval vessels or military personnel, scoring 543 points.
  • Other contestants who scored over 400 points were Freikorp, Carbrera, and Czar. Of course all these points are now wiped out and the 32 remaining contestants start again from zero in round 3.

Vivvt submitted the largest number of DYKs (30), and MBlaze Lightning achieved 13 articles at ITN. Carbrera claimed for 11 GAs and Argento Surfer performed the most GARs, having reviewed 11. So far we have achieved 38 featured articles and a splendid 132 good articles. Commendably, 279 GARs have been achieved so far, more than double the number of GAs.

So, on to the third round. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed in round 3. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. GA

[edit]

I'm not asking for a Good Article review, but I have a question. I noticed that you're reviewing a village article for Good Article status and I thought that would make you a great person to ask. My current Good Article nomination is for a small Iowa town and I thought that it would be simple to compare it to other small town articles, but I can't find any. There isn't as much of a wealth of information for small towns as large cities. I was wondering if you could give me some details on what a small town GA would need or at least link me to an article to base mine off of. The article is is Kingsley, Iowa. If you're too busy, that's fine too. SL93 (talk) 22:59, 14 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page watcher) Little Thetford (a 4500-word FA on a town with a population of 792) is something of a model to follow for articles like this. Your best bet is generally to drop the name of the town into Amazon and see what comes up, and then make a note of the titles and put them into Worldcat to see where you can borrow them. Even the most obscure towns have often had a book published about them at some point, and once you have one book (even if it's 50 years out of date) you can use that as a framework for basic facts, and fill in the gaps with snippets you find elsewhere. ‑ Iridescent 23:05, 14 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the wikilink. I did manage to find two books about Kingsley at the town's library, but I had to return them. I actually visit Kingsley often so I will check them out again. I somehow managed to find this goodie in Google Books. SL93 (talk) 23:10, 14 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

More locked pages

[edit]

Cas......you probably can tell my admin request didn't go well, so I have more locked pages to move. I tried pagemover and it doesn't seem to work for me. Got pagemover working with another browser......My MSN browser did not work, but I installed Firefox and that worked just fine.....Pvmoutside (talk) 14:55, 17 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

......thanks Cas......Pvmoutside (talk) 12:01, 17 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) Pvmoutside, those pages aren't locked. If they were locked you would not see a "move" button at all. Softlavender (talk) 12:11, 17 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
They are for me. A red box shows up and doesn't allow me to move the pages......I've already discussed this.....Pvmoutside (talk) 12:14, 17 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
That doesn't make them "locked". It just means that pagemover rights are required to move them. If they were "locked", the move button would not even be visible to you. Softlavender (talk) 12:22, 17 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I have pagemover rights and it still does not work for me.....Pvmoutside (talk) 12:30, 17 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Then you simply need to learn how to effectively use pagemover. Anarchyte has offered several times to help you with navigating pagemover. Alternatively, you can post questions at Wikipedia talk:Page mover. The overall point, however, is that the pages are not "locked", and you need to avoid using the term "locked" incorrectly. Softlavender (talk) 12:35, 17 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I've contacted both Anarchyte and Andy Wang regarding this issue. Anarchyte referred me to Andy who tried to help, suggested I go back to requesting page moves (see my talk page). If the pages don't move for me, what term would you suggest I use?....Pvmoutside (talk) 13:09, 17 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
See note above....I got pagemover to work by installing Firefox. Evidently MSN doesn't work.....Pvmoutside (talk) 14:55, 17 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Great! I'm glad pagemover is finally working for you! In terms of what to call redirects that can only be moved by pagemover but that are not actually locked, you can describe them however you like as long as you don't use the word "locked"; a locked page may only be edited by an administrator. Softlavender (talk) 15:27, 17 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Glad to know it is all working now. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 20:41, 17 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Query about Banning policy

[edit]

Hello. The proposal of banning policy was submitted to village pump of Chinese Wikipedia recently. I would like to know how to execute it technically. It seems no any add-on installed on English Wikipedia. I found that there was an abuse filter established for it, but it was now disabled. Is it only executed manually? Thank you. sysop of zh.wikipedia. regards, --J.Wong 09:50, 21 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

It is straightforward - essentially to all intents and purposes an indefinite block. The difference is that bans apply to all editing, good or bad, so one just reverts all edits attributable to a banned editor. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 13:45, 21 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Recent edits in red-billed quelea

[edit]

Dear Casliber, User Abductive largely deleted the etymology section in the red-billed quelea-article, based on the fact that it is "embarrassing" these statements were "sourced to a dictionary--!" I have reverted the edit that deleted the statement "Linnaeus himself did not explain the name quelea." because there is no "source for this statement". However since in the Systema Natura Linnaeus does not give an etymology, I think it is not necessary to have an other source to draw that conclusion for us. What is your assessment concerning the embarrassing situation that we derived a statement from another (rather specialised) dictionary? Thanks for your answer? Dwergenpaartje (talk) 11:53, 12 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I see. late here and I need to sleep (exhausted and think am coming down with a cold). I will look into it tomorrow. I don't see how there can be justification for removing an OED reference really. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 14:09, 12 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Spotted shag

[edit]

On 13 June 2017, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Spotted shag, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that shags may be spotted in New Zealand? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Spotted shag. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Spotted shag), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Hi!

[edit]

Thank You very much for your advices on Columbidae/GA1, and have amended the issues (and commented about it on the talk page, as well). The link was really cool and I will make use of it in further bird articles. Could you check out the Mallard article too? (and if possibly grab it up for a review as well, but only if you are fine with it. :P) Thanks again. :) Adityavagarwal (talk) 08:27, 15 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Mallard sure is a big article. Look, I have some chores to do, but am intrigued....let me think about it for a few hours... Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 10:10, 15 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
It sure is a big article. :P It really was quite a task to bring it to a GA candidate level now. Also, only review if you have no problem with it. It is perfectly fine, and you could deny the review. It really is a very big article, and I felt that myself when I was editing it. Also, could you suggest if I should change the references according to JBoyd? This is after people's comments on the talk page of columbidae, here. Could you please see that once? Thank You. :) Adityavagarwal (talk) 11:43, 15 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, I address all the issues on Mallard, that you pointed out. So, could you please check it? Thank You. Adityavagarwal (talk) 07:59, 23 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hopefully, I have addressed all the issues mention. Could you check it out? Thanks. Adityavagarwal (talk) 13:38, 26 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

IP Block exemption on Wikimedia Commons and Wikimedia Meta-Wiki

[edit]

Hi again! You had unblocked my open proxy IP address some time ago, and so I can happily continue to edit now. However, I realize now that ı can neither link an en:WP article to e.g. tr.WP article nor upload an image at WikiMedia Commons. I asked the admin, who made the IP block, User:Vituzzu. He did not do anything as also happened in the previous case. Would you please unblock my IP address 188.166.232.125., and notify me? Thank you in advance. CeeGee 10:36, 15 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I have no admin rights on any other wiki apart from en.wiki so you'll have to ask someone over there, sorry. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 11:37, 15 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Request for statement

[edit]

Hello Cas Liber! I was writing an article for the Signpost about the Wikipedia cup, and I noticed that you are doing really well! So first of all, congrats, and second of all, I would like to ask you for a statement regarding the Wikipedia cup for use in the article. You can talk about your experience, the progress, how you do it all, advice for new editors, anything. Your help is greatly appreciated. Be aware that anything you say in response can be used in the article. I am still working on everything so if I did something wrong, feel free to tell me. Thanks. Any response must be given by June 21. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated in this matter. Please ping me in response Eddie891 (talk) 19:28, 18 June 2017 (UTC) (requests for comment have been sent to several editors)[reply]

Articles most fit for GA-nomination

[edit]

Hi Casliber,

Thanks in advance, kind regards, Dwergenpaartje (talk) 16:28, 19 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Right @Dwergenpaartje:, I think your best bet is Nelicourvi weaver right now. Black-capped social weaver, White-browed sparrow-weaver and Fire-capped tit look a little on the slim side. Hymenaea stigonocarpa needs a taxonomy section, more in Distribution section (which should include habitat), Catamixis needs more ecology stuff, Gundelia is promising and the shroud stuff is fascinating. Needs some reorganizing. Spiranthes spiralis looks promising too. Great to see a lot of biota from Africa/Asia/Sth America being worked on. Regarding the etymology stuff. Did look around a little while ago, agree needs resolving. Will revisit soon. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 02:50, 20 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your work on the review! The article's annual readership for the last year is 326,977 pageviews, though it has fluctuated higher throughout the years - particularly around World Cup and Olympics years. Hmlarson (talk) 17:42, 19 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

On 23 June 2017, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Cortinarius orellanus, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. Sarawak and a blocked friend of yours

[edit]

You are edit warring against the WP:BLOCKEVASION policy. (I am not, under WP:NOT3RR. The exemption from 3RR should make you pause and consider your next steps). Just because the blocked editor is a friend of yours, with whom you have been discussing the mental stability of people like Dr. Blofeld, does not grant him an exemption from the blocking policy. - 213.205.194.232 (talk) 13:12, 26 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I will call bull shit on your desire to build a better 'pedia. See here Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 13:15, 26 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I read your excuses, but you do not know me, so don't tell me my reasons for doing anything. Your conduct in discussing Blofeld's mental health is disgusting. - 213.205.194.232 (talk) 13:24, 26 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't discuss anything to do with that. So don't put 2 & 2 together and get 5. I don't need to know who you are, your edit history tells me all I need to know. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 13:31, 26 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
NB: See para 2 of block evasion policy,
Wikipedians in turn are not permitted to post or edit material at the direction of a blocked editor (sometimes called proxy editing or proxying) unless they can show that the changes are either verifiable or productive and they have independent reasons for making such edits

Edit warring

[edit]
Stop icon

Your recent editing history shows that you are currently engaged in an edit war. To resolve the content dispute, please do not revert or change the edits of others when you are reverted. Instead of reverting, please use the talk page to work toward making a version that represents consensus among editors. The best practice at this stage is to discuss, not edit-war. See BRD for how this is done. If discussions reach an impasse, you can then post a request for help at a relevant noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases, you may wish to request temporary page protection.

Being involved in an edit war can result in your being blocked from editing—especially if you violate the three-revert rule, which states that an editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. Undoing another editor's work—whether in whole or in part, whether involving the same or different material each time—counts as a revert. Also keep in mind that while violating the three-revert rule often leads to a block, you can still be blocked for edit warring—even if you don't violate the three-revert rule—should your behavior indicate that you intend to continue reverting repeatedly. - 213.205.194.232 (talk) 13:48, 26 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Feel free to argue your case here. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 15:17, 26 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Sarawak Updates

[edit]

I'll post copies of this to Mr Cervaise, Mr Sarastro and Mr CasLiber.

Just noticed that ANI thread about yesterday's edit warring on the Sarawak FAC page. What a ridiculous waste of time! The guy who closed the thread displayed rare intelligence in noting: "If a rule prevents you from improving or maintaining Wikipedia, ignore it. And if you care more about rules than about encyclopedia-building, go find another website"

Today I picked out the following paragraph:

Tourism plays a major role in the economy of the state, contributing 9.3% of the state's GDP in 2015. Foreign visitors to Sarawak are predominantly from Brunei, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, and China. A number of different organisations, both state and private, are involved in the promotion of tourism in Sarawak: the Sarawak Tourism Board is the state body responsible for tourism promotion in the state, various private tourism groups are united under the Sarawak Tourism Federation, and the Sarawak Convention Bureau is responsible for attracting conventions, conferences, and corporate events which are held in the Borneo Convention Centre in Kuching. The public and private bodies in Sarawak hold a biannual event to award the Sarawak Hornbill Tourism Award, an award for achievements within various categories, to recognise businesses and individuals for their efforts in the development of tourism within the state

I've re-written it thus:

Tourism plays a major role in the economy of the state, contributing 9.3% of the state's GDP in 2015. In the same year the top five countries for foreign visitors were Brunei, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, and China. Different organisations, both state and private, are involved in the promotion of tourism: the Sarawak Tourism Board; the Sarawak Tourism Federation, a collection of private tourism groups; and the Sarawak Convention Bureau, a body responsible for promoting MICE tourism, the venue for which is the Borneo Convention Centre in Kuching. The public and private bodies hold a biannual event to award the Sarawak Hornbill Tourism Award, an award for achievements within various categories, to recognise businesses and individuals for their efforts in the development of tourism in Sarawak.

Points to note:

1. You repeat "Sarawak" way too often. You don't need to. We all know what you're talking about.
2. You tell us that: "Foreign visitors to Sarawak are predominantly from Brunei, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, and China". This isn't true, nor does your source, the Borneo Post, support the claim. The correct source is Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture Sarawak: Visitor Arrivals into Sarawak 2015. Take a look at the figures and you'll see the word "predominantly" is incorrect: in 2015 China was only slightly ahead of Thailand, India and the UK. See how I've re-jigged your sentence.
3. See too how I'm replacing your newspaper sources with government ones: when you discuss official stuff it's usually best to use official sources. It makes you look more cleverer and more betterer.
4. You have: "the Sarawak Convention Bureau is responsible for attracting conventions, conferences, and corporate events". I've replaced this with MICE tourism, where MICE is an acronym that represents: Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Events. Check to see if MICE tourism is wiki-linked.

To be frank, it seems that just about every source I check is wrong. There's an obvious conclusion to be drawn from this, but it's not up to me to make it.

And that's it for today. Doubtless some shit-faced moderator will now come along and ban me, but I'm happy to help. If you're interested, I live just above the Malaysian border, not far from Penang. Stay cool. AuricGoldfinger (talk) 12:35, 27 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Nice...except I didn't write the article, only reviewed it. Still I think it good. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 12:43, 27 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The above editor has been blocked as being a sockpuppet of Singora. Any reason why you don't bother responding to emails anymore? That you think highly of Singora is your business but all I know is that he's trolled me for three months and spouted an enormous amount of vitriol and nonsense about wikipedia and its editors which doesn't seem to concern you.♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:34, 29 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I should have realised. I have been having trouble with that email. I did suggest to use a newer email, didn't I? Sorry I didn't get back to you. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 14:46, 29 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not going to complain about Singora to you any longer. You're probably busy in RL at the moment anyway. All I know is that I've really lost a lot of motivation to produce a lot of content here, if you compare what I may have produced 7 or 8 years ago to now. Hopefully this planned Women contest for October will inspire me once again.♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:55, 29 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2017 July newsletter

[edit]

The third round of the competition has finished in a flurry of last minute activity, with 288 points being required to qualify for round 4. It was a hotly competitive round with all but four of the contestants exceeding the 106 points that was necessary to proceed to round 4 last year. Coemgenus and Freikorp tied on 288, and both have been allowed to proceed, so round 4 now has one pool of eight competitors and one of nine.

Round 3 saw the achievement of a 26-topic Featured topic by MPJ-DK as well as 5 featured lists and 13 featured articles. PanagiotisZois and SounderBruce achieved their first ever featured articles. Carbrera led the GA score with 10, Tachs achieved 17 DYKs and MBlaze Lightning 10 In the news items. There were 167 DYKs, 93 GARs and 82 GAs overall, this last figure being higher than the number of GAs in round 2, when twice as many people were taking part. Even though contestants performed more GARs than they achieved GAs, there was still some frustration at the length of time taken to get articles reviewed.

As we start round 4, we say goodbye to the fifteen or so competitors who didn't quite make it; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them (some people have fallen foul of this rule and the points have been removed).

If you are concerned that your nomination, whether it be for a good article, a featured process, or anything else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.
