Query about Rumi calendar[edit]

I posted the following query at Talk:Rumi calendar#When did Turkey adopt Gregorian leap year rules?. Since you seem to be the contributor who is most knowledgeable about the subject I thought I'd approach you directly. Do you know the answer?

According to this article, the Rumi calendar "abandoned" the Julian calendar in AH 1333 = 1917 by dropping 13 days, which realigned its months to the Gregorian calendar. However, it also says that Ataturk "replaced" the reformed Rumi calendar by the Gregorian calendar at the end of AH 1341 = 1925. It is clear that Ataturk replaced the Rumi era by the era of the Gregorian calendar. But was 1341/1925 the first time that Gregorian leap year rules were adopted, or were they already adopted as part of the reform of 1333/1917? My guess is the latter, but can someone who can understand the Turkish references cited confirm this?

Very hard question? I missed to ask it to myself. I guess (only guess) that the leap year was intoduced in 1917, because the length of the months must have been in conformity with the Gregorian calender's in order not to change the equivalent reference of the calendar days. The difference had existed only in the expression of the years, for my POV. About the beginning of the Gregorian calender in Turkey, I could not find a source yet. However, I guess it began on January 1, 1926, since it is custom in our country that adopted laws go in effect almost immediately, not after a long time as more than one year. Thanks, I'm also pretty sure that this is right. I would like to be able to cite a very authoritative source that verifies it, since there is conflicting information on the net. If I understand section 4.1.1 of this page correctly, based on this Google translation into English, it confirms the account you have written in the Rumi calendar article, but with the additional detail that there were two separate changes in 1917: in 1332/1917 (law 2851) the Rumi calendar was aligned to the Gregorian calendar, and in 1333/1917 (law 615) the New Year was changed from 1 March to 1 January, except for the financial year. The only problem I have is that the article says that the first change was under law 2851, but the French translation given here says it was law 2803, not 2851. Do you know which number is correct, or whether there were two laws passed in 1332 (and if so what the difference is between 2803 and 2851)?

As for 1926 vs 1927, it seems clear that the legally effective date was 1926, but it is not clear why many sources (e.g. [1], Google English translation at [2]) say 1927, even on pages like this one that also say the law mandated 1926. -- Chris Bennett (talk) 22:49, 12 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

When I search "Şubat 1332 Kanun 2803", which means "February 1332 AH Act 2803" at Google, I find the reference [3] of a publisher specialized on printing of government material. The reference lists all the laws enacted during the Ottoman Empire, which are still in force today. The date of the act "MUAMELATI DEVLETTE TAKVİMİ GARBİNİN KABULÜ HAKKINDA KANUN" (Law on the Acceptance of the Western Calendar for State Affairs) is February 10, 1332 AH.

A search with the law's title finds [4], which gives the full text of the law. It was dated Fabruary 8, 1332 AH. For my POV, this is the text of the law proposal, which is listed as so at [5].

A search with "Şubat 1332 Kanun 2851" yields to the reference at [6], which was published by a governmental institution "Atatürk Araştıma Merkezi Başkanlığı" (Atatürk Reseach Center). The law was dated February 16, 1332 AH.

Thank you very much indeed. I think it is clear from this that 2803 is the correct number, since it is still in force, except for article 4. I've also found Turkish text for 1341 Kanun 698, Ataturk's reform. The Google English translation is very bad, but it is clear that it wasn't published until 2 January 1926, which may explain why some people talk about the reform coming into effect in 1927.

However, I have not been able to find any Turkish text for the law(? -- it's not called a "kanun") 615 mentioned at [7], which seems to have changed the start of the year from March to January. Since this is the same page that mentions "2851", apparently incorrectly, I wonder if "615" is also incorrect. The list of current Ottoman laws at [8] only has two laws with "Takvim" in the title, and they are 2803 and 698. The same list shows laws of April 1332 AH before February 1332 AH, but laws of February 1337 AH before laws of April 1337 AH, so the start of the year must have changed between 1332 and 1337 AH.

This is not vandalism... Look what Sultanzade means...He cant be a Greatgrandchild of Mihrimah Sultan. Look what Hanimsultan means...a direct daughter of a Ottoman Princess...

Strange, you a Turk why you didn't know that?

Sultanzade: the title borne by the sons of Ottoman Imperial Princesses (Sultan). The sons of Imperial Princesses, excluded from the Ottoman imperial succession, were only styled Sultanzade (given name) Bey-Efendi, i.e. Son of a Princess of the Ottoman dynasty.

Only direct sons are the Title Sultanzade... Why no any of Turks in Wikipedia know that? Strange.

But...who care's... I know it and many others know it, that the Title Sultanzade and Hanimsultan are the direct son and daughter of an ottoman princess and not her Grandgets...

Thanks a lot for your invitation. However, I prefer to keep on editing only in my foreign languages and not in my mother tongue because many can do it in Turkish WP but there are few, who contribute about Turkey in other language WPs. Aya[edit]

I have a question for you as Istanbullu: I have at the moment a discussion about Ayakapı (a gate of the walls of Istanbul on Halic), since a fellow Wikipedian asserts that then the name is an hybrid between the Greek Word Aya and the Turkish word kapı. He also says that no Turk would understand the real meaning of Ayakapi, since Aya describe in Turkish only the palm of the head. Now, I think that Aya comes of course from Greek ("Hagios") but is a turkified version of the word (like Saint in English come from Sanctus in Latin). The main reason for me to support this assertion is that in Turkish we have place names (like Ayastefonos, Ayayorgi) where Aya is also used, although the name is male. Turkish does not know gender and this explain why we have the same form for female (Aya in Ayakapi comes from the nearby church of Hagia Theodosia) and male name of saints. Some years ago a Greek Wikipedian had the same opinion as I have today. What do you think about it? I wish you also the same. I found a source, which says "AYAKAPI Haliç surları üzerinde, Fener-Cibali kapıları arasında bulunan ve buradaki surlarda Türkler'in fetihten sonra açıp, buraya ve yakın çevresine "Yeni Ayakapı" (yeni kutsal kapı) dedikleri bölgedir." at "Semtleri, mahalleleri, caddeleri ve sokaklarıyla A'dan Z'ye ..1 by Haldun Hürel. currently there is an ongoing process to promote Istanbul to Featured Article Status. If you have time and lust, you can participate and review the article (or part of it). I find very important that someone actually living in the city checks the article's content: many things (f.e. how good fish restaurants in Kumpkapı are :-)) comes from sources which do not reflect necessarily the reality.
