recent SPI block

thanks for acting on my latest SPI of whitmore 8621. The moment I checked the sock's contributions list, I knew it was him right away that's why I requested CU to be sure. Hindi pa rin talaga marunong mag-talk page archive nang maayos. (Still doesn't know how to properly archive a talk page). Judging by his tone, I don't think endofskull has the foggiest idea of how that warring editor from Down Under has rankled me and irked others, considering he's been blocked before. "I don't like my privacy being invaded"? Meh, not that different from his unblock request whinings about "I don't like being bullied or ignored." NPA notwithstanding, what a loser. --Eaglestorm (talk) 16:04, 29 August 2010 (UTC)

You're welcome. Looking a the unblocks requests, I couldn't agree more that there was sockpuppetry going on. I'm still clueless on Endofskull's part. Elockid (Talk) 17:46, 29 August 2010 (UTC)
Agree on being clueless. Not that I'm forumshopping, though I've alerted Smashville, but could you lock the TP of 122.107.214.146? That's his IP sock and he continues with his deletionist crap...with the WHOIS tag I placed the latest victim. This is the first time I've ever seen any anons remove WHOIS tags.--Eaglestorm (talk) 14:25, 3 September 2010 (UTC)

It won't hurt to try especially since the community has been banning people left and right recently. Elockid (Talk) 16:08, 4 September 2010 (UTC)

I am glad to announce to you that we will be debuting as an organization at the Philippine Youth Congress in Information Technology on September 14 to 17, 2010 at the University of the Philippines, Diliman. Jojit will be Wikimedia Philippines resource speaker at the second day of the conference at the UP Film Center. He will be speaking about Wikipedia and how it revolutionizes the World Wide Web. That will be at 9:00 to 10:00 am. We will also set up a booth at the UP Bahay ng Alumni and we will showcase our existing and future projects. We encourage you to participate in our first major project. We have prepared food and refreshments for you. It looks like him based on the pages and the range. I am a little surprised though, because he hasn't used that range in awhile. He's usually using IPs like 86.178.144.45 (talk · contribs), still the same ISP and location, but higher in the 86s nowadays. Elockid (Talk) 11:43, 8 September 2010 (UTC)

Per the further discussion at WP:Sockpuppet investigations/8MA8/Archive, I've urged that 8MA8's block should be extended to indef (see bottom of page). Would you have any comment on that idea? You placed the most recent (unexpired) block, for one week. The main Mico Apostolov account is still free to edit. Thanks, EdJohnston (talk) 16:08, 8 September 2010 (UTC)

Your block of Serienfan2010

Regarding your block of User:Serienfan2010,[1] to be fair he/she was only reverting inappropriate changes by another editor who has now breached 3RR by making 6 reversions to the page in a little over 3 hours. I've raised the matter at Talk:List of Phineas and Ferb episodes/Archive 1#Article layout and notified the relevant editors in a hope to stop it. The big problem seems to be Isabella and Lego Liker's unwillingness to allow the page to comply with Template:Episode list#Sublists. Ironically, this editor hasn't been blocked. --AussieLegend (talk) 01:18, 10 September 2010 (UTC)

About the removals performed by User:Dabomb87 in those log pages you linked, here's Jimbo concurring that removal of PC from pages (where PC is not suspected of causing problems) should not be done at the moment, and that PC should be considered for articles that would be Page Protected, if it would be superior to page protection: User_talk:Jimbo_Wales#Removing_pending.
Here's Jimbo's general announcement that PC will remain in operation (and potentially expanded): User_talk:Jimbo_Wales#Announcement_about_Pending_Changes [To quote: "I am not going to ask that the feature be removed from any articles where it is currently active, as there appears to be absolutely no positive reason to do that." and "use it more in cases like the ones where it is working ("gradual limited expansion")"

Drork

Hello Elockid. IPs on the same ISP as Drork have been recently making the same edits to Golan Heights and West Bank. I am getting a bit frustrated by the never-ending supply of IPs to re-revert the same edits over and over. What should be done here? nableezy - 15:22, 13 September 2010 (UTC)

Looks like Drork. I'll handle this as soon as I can. Elockid (Alternate) (Talk) 15:25, 13 September 2010 (UTC)
Hello Elockid. Though I have to agree that those IPs (Golan Heights, West Bank) look suspicious, I'm not sure they are related to each other, though maybe I don't see the whole picture. Also acting just according to ISP seems kind of harsh, there might be other customers of the same ISP who contribute to Wikipedia. Reverting someone who you think is a banned user is different from reverting someone who is unambiguously a banned user. This case is the former. AgadaUrbanit (talk) 15:59, 13 September 2010 (UTC)
Could be. But, per the recent reports at SPIs, See Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Drork/Archive, the Golan Heights article suggests that the IP(s) editing there is probably Drork. The IP on West Bank looks related to 79.181.9.231 (talk · contribs). See this diff by 79.181.9.231 and 109.66.48.29 for example. User Jgittins

Hi. Just a friendly enquiry about Jgittins (talk · contribs), as I am indirectly involed via Offer of assistance and User talk:Senra#Churches in Secunderabad. I am a relatively new editor myself, who is showing some concern for inexperienced editors as well as trying to create useful articles such as Little Thetford, St James' Church, Stretham and Ely and Littleport riots 1816. Unfortuanelty (for me) I do not understand the checkuser and blocking process, so it is difficult for me to review this case sufficiently to make a sensible judgement. As I am still trying to learn, would you be so kind as to drop me a couple of links that would show me the evidence confirming the link between Jgittins (talk · contribs) and Coramandel23 (talk · contribs) and also the discussions that have taken place leading to the blocking? Be assured I am not trying to interfere - far from it; I am simply trying to understand how I have been suckered here --Senra (Talk) 15:30, 15 September 2010 (UTC)

It was specifically comparison of this account to Geofisherguy (talk · contribs) which is a CU confirmed sock of Coramandel23. It's an account created after the block (good sign of sockpuppetry) and that looks to have the same agenda, editing the same types articles (Christianity in South India) as Geofisherguy. Elockid (Alternate) (Talk) 16:03, 15 September 2010 (UTC)
Forgive my ignorance here. None of the links you have so far given me confirm that Jgittins (talk · contribs) is the same as Coramandel23 (talk · contribs) (except they say CU confirmed which I guess I have to accept AGF) nor, in particular, where the concensus investigation is that, in the first place, blocked the root editor— I assume Coramandel23 (talk · contribs) is the root, i.e. first account. I guess you are very busy and suspect my query is noise in an otherwise closed and unimportant case; Nevertheless, as explained above, I am trying to learn --Senra (Talk) 16:26, 15 September 2010 (UTC)
If you compare the contributions of Special:Contributions/Geofisherguy who is also Coramandel23, the contributions from Special:Contributions/Jgittins are similar. CU may be able to verify this. But in light of striking behavioral evidence (looking at contributions, examining behaviors, etc.), a duck block is given and a CU would usually decline running a check per that reason. As a result, sockpuppetry related blocks do not generally need a CU to confirm that the account was a sock. Elockid (Alternate) (Talk) 16:40, 15 September 2010 (UTC)
If you need further explaining, I have to do it a bit later. Sorry about that. Elockid (Alternate) (Talk) 16:41, 15 September 2010 (UTC)

Blocking question

Hi, I was out of the country for about three months, and wasn't on Wikipedia during that time. I noticed that since I've been back, several administrators have blocked various IP addresses without leaving a block notice on the IP's talk page. Is this a policy change? I don't have an opinion one way or the other, I just wanted to know. Thanks, Sven Manguard Talk 03:35, 24 September 2010 (UTC)

For rangeblocks, admins don't add a block notice because it would be extremely tedious to do so especially for large ranges. For other blocks, adding a block notice is highly recommended but not required given that there is a good reason not to, for example 4chan vandals. See WP:Blocking policy#Notifying the blocked user. Elockid (Talk) 03:43, 24 September 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for the clarification. I see that the notice was added to User talk:150.108.232.21 after I stopped looking, but I noticed it with a couple of other admins too, hence the question. He also is using racist logic to try to justify removing some Asian groups from the Asian American page. I made a response to his initial comments on the matter, but I simply don't have the time to respond again because I am bogged down with school work. I know they have only made a handful of edits and only been warned once since they have been unblocked, but looking at the recent edits and the history I thought you might like to keep an eye on them. --Wintonian (talk) 18:31, 11 October 2010 (UTC)

I'm not exactly sure if that IP is static or rather the same person, but based on the edits, it could be. So yeah, I'll keep an eye out. Elockid (Talk) 21:45, 11 October 2010 (UTC)

Brian Cook (college sports blogger, auther)

Brian Cook (college sports blogger and author) was recently deleted from wiki. I beleve this to be a mistake as Mr. Cook runs mgoblog.com, one of the most comprehensive college sports blogs in amarica. His content has been referenced by journalists from ESPN, The Big Ten Network, The Detroit Free Press, The Ann Arbor News and by authors such as John U. Bacon who is also a professor at The University of Michigan. Brian Cook also is a freelance sports writer for SBNation.com, as well as many other sports related websites. I trust that Mr. Cook's Wiki page will be reinstated once you have done your proper due diligence.

Hello,

You recently closed the case Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Miradre. However there is one more potential puppetmaster who has been mentioned but not checked. The user is Jagz. Wapondaponda (talk) 16:40, 18 October 2010 (UTC)

Hi, I wasn't sure where exactly to bring this up, but given you responded to this user's listing of me on the Vandalism noticeboard, I thought I'd bring it up to you. Now, while the actual content dispute that prompted Crolladder to list me there is a whole other kettle of fish (in summation, a check of the page edit history and his own edits will reveal that his editing has been primarily devoted to pushing his opinion on one single item), what really troubles me his is claim here] that I "emailed hurtful emails to me and then vandalizes the page again". This is egregiously false--I have had no direct contact with this user outside of a few replies on Talk:Oasis (band) and have not e-mailed him at all (I am also not vandalizing the page, but that's really the lesser issue to me right now). Coupled with his editing behavior (in addition to pushing his POV, he threatens other users with reporting them for vandalism), I believe this editor requires a closer look. Thanks for your time. WesleyDodds (talk)

I'll monitor the user and the article and intervene if necessary. 12:39, 23 October 2010 (UTC)

That was Zsfgseg

He seems to have access to a least a /13 range, so dealing with him is difficult. Do you know any methods other than this continued RBI'ing? Also, I filed an LTA at Wikipedia:Long-term abuse/Zsfgseg. Access Denied [FATAL ERROR] 00:34, 27 October 2010 (UTC)

From what I know, he edits through a /12 range. With ranges that big, there really isn't much we can do unless the community or the foundation agrees to having his ranges blocked and have collateral. You could also try Wikipedia:Abuse response. Unfortunately, the only we can do for now is RBI. Elockid (Talk) 00:41, 27 October 2010 (UTC)
And if I'm correct that means he has access to slightly over 1 million IPs. I don't understand why ISPs are even allowed to use such large ranges. Access Denied [FATAL ERROR] 00:44, 27 October 2010 (UTC)
Don't understand either. Elockid (Talk) 00:47, 27 October 2010 (UTC)

Hello Elockid, I think that this guy User talk:74.254.68.126, is a sock of the User you blocked a while back, User:ProfessorJane. The edits patterns are really similar, always adding flags to the PRC/ROC/Taiwan articles, and non-neutral stuff about them being two countries. He seems to be at it again. If you could look into this it would be great. Thanks. T-1000 (talk) 04:26, 27 October 2010 (UTC)

  1. hello,

i want to know on what basis you are proving me wrong.you are saying that surat's metropolitan area population i am providing is wrong.then i would like to remind you that the city population of surat in 2010,which is provided by surat municipal corporation iteself is 4.7 million.mind it! i am not talking about the metropolitan area.and in the list of most populous metropolitan areas of india you are stating surat metropolitan area's population is 3.2 million.it truely makes sense that metropolitan area population cannot be smaller than city pop. it clearly states that you are mad.and what are you talking about the source do you think that world gazeetar is more reliable than surat municipal corporation website.if you think that you hell with world gazettar.i was providing the right population figures for surat and you think its a joke.then from now onward i say goodbye to wikipedia, only because of you and mind it! it would be very serios.no editing no information for wikipedi from now onwards.—Preceding unsigned comment added by Dangerpatel (talkcontribs)

Municipal population does not mean metropolitan population. Take Chongqing for example. It has a population of 31 million people in it's municipal borders. However, every other source put its metropolitan nowhere near that number, not even past 10 million. This is basically because in the true sense of what a metropolitan area is, Chongqing does not have a population of over 31 million people. Just because the municipal population is bigger does not mean that the metropolitan population is bigger. That number that you keep putting is from CityMayors which I have already explained to you is unreliable. I added the actual municipal population and you have concurred that it's very reliable. You have said yourself that the population is 4.7 million for 2010. However, you with this edit put again the same unreliable source. What prompted this change puzzles me because you are contradicting yourself. Elockid (Talk) 00:52, 30 October 2010 (UTC)

Please help me!

Hello there, fellow Wikipedian! Please, allow me to clarify that I’m not a robot or anything of the sort... please carry on reading! =) Allow me to introduce myself – My name is Maria and I’m a high school student at El Salvador. You probably know this country, because according to the revision history in the “El Salvador” Wikipedia page, you took part in its maintenance just recently, not many days ago. You probably may think that this is extremely random for a total stranger to ask for your help, out of the blue, but I think you just may be the right person to help me out for my ITGS (IT in a Global Society) investigation. It’s simple, really. I have a set of interview questions (some are open, some are closed) that you, as a WP-editing expert, could kindly answer for me. I’d really appreciate it if you helped me out. I can send you my analytical essay to further prove that I really am a student seeking opinions on the subject of her research, and not some spamming/phishing robot. You can contact me at marialaurapa@gmail.com to send me your interview answers, or any other queries you may have. I am happy to respond to any of your questions regarding my research. If you could respond as soon as possible, that would be great. My full interview transcript is due on Wednesday the 10th of November. Here is the set of questions I would like you to answer:

1. How often do you find offenses and inaccuracies in Wikipedia?

2. If so, what kind of offenses have you found?

3. How do you think this affects the use of Wikipedia for educational purposes?

4. As an editor, have you ever faced any cases of vandalism or unrighteous deletion to your posts?

5. As a scholar, have you ever felt inclined towards using Wikipedia as your only source?

6. If so, or if not, why?

7. Are you an advocate of Open-Source online encyclopedias, or do you consider commercial encyclopedias as a more reliable source of information?

8. (To previous question) Why?

9. Do you believe that every person should have the same right to establishing of an 'editor' hierarchy?(Take into account the repercussions that this has in education)

10. How do you think these changes in Wikipedia transform the open source community?

Thank you for your time!

Marialaurapa (talk) 07:50, 5 November 2010 (UTC)

I usually don't use email, so I'm just going to answer here. I hope you don't mind.
1 & 2) There are some inaccuracies, not that many caused by vandals trying to insert wrong information like this person. But it's not rampant. Vandalism is high but it usually gets reverted quickly before the average reader/passerby notices
3) Not really very much. As I said previously, vandalism doesn't stay in the articles for long and for the most part the information stays accurate. However, the most major effect is that there is still the chance of misinformation.
4) If you mean my comments on a talk page where a person vandalizes I would say, in other words refactor or change my comments to have a completely different meaning, then I can't really think of a time qhwn this happened. If you mean my edits to articles have people vandalized them, then yes.
5 & 6) No. Having multiple sources is the best way to go to have a comparison or idea about a topic. Each source no matter how accurate or credible they may be still has a chance to be inaccurate. Wikipedia is no exception especially with its open editing nature.
7 & 8) Commercial encyclopedias such as Britannica Encyclopaedia are by default more reliable. They are closed editing encyclopedias, people just can't insert random info, so there is a much less risk of encountering inaccurate information when comparing it to Wikipedia.
9) A bit of clarification here. Do you mean an "editor" hierarchy where there is an editor in chief or an "editor" hierarchy in Wikipedia where your user access level is involved?
10) I'm not sure of what changes you mean. Could you please elaborate? Elockid (Alternate) (Talk) 13:39, 5 November 2010 (UTC)

Cities in India

Are you going to change the Surat population based on the source? We can't really have disparate sources in a single source list, besides there's no logic presented on the current source on how they got their estimates either. This has started affecting other city articles as the list is being used as a reference to change the rankings elsewhere. cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 22:10, 6 November 2010 (UTC)

REQUEST

hello ELockid, can you explain me how the site world gazettar is reliable and in what sense.and can a metropolitan population be greater than the city population?

(talk page stalker) A metropolitan population counts the population of the city and of the outlying region with strong socio-economic (commuting) ties with the city. For further info please read Metropolitan area. Jarkeld (talk) 12:55, 9 November 2010 (UTC)
It is considered reliable because it uses official census data. Census data is usually more preferred on Wikipedia. See Los Angeles for example. The city or the state of California, can't remember which, has a population estimate for Los Angeles, but census data is used instead. In most cases the metropolitan population is greater than the city population. This is because many cities have suburbs which have strong economic ties to the central city. But that is not always the case. See Chongqing for example. Elockid (Talk) 22:13, 9 November 2010 (UTC)

Country template page protection

You declined my requests to protect {{BAR}} and {{LIT}} because they are "just" redirects. But vandalism to these has the same effect as vandalism to the base templates, and BAR at least has the advantage of being sanctioned by the IOC. Agreed, they don't have a history of vandalism, but I'm guessing many of the others don't either; they are protected usually with comments such as Heavily used meta-template which is seldom updated. Protected due to vandalism concerns or high-risk template. Matchups 03:56, 10 November 2010 (UTC)

Could you please show me some other redirects of flag templates that are protected. Then I'll reconsider my decision. Elockid (Talk) 12:10, 10 November 2010 (UTC)

Human Development Index

Hi, Elockid

Could you check this page Human Development Index and see if it needs semi-protection? Just noticed all those Tag:Section blanking, and I'm not sure if that's right. If it is, so be it. --John KB (talk) 15:28, 10 November 2010 (UTC)

There's some good edits, so I'm a bit reluctant to protect now. I did warn the user who kept section blanking though. Elockid (Talk) 00:03, 11 November 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, page blanking by User_talk:24.141.79.30, that's why I was reluctant to send it to RPP. I just happened to stumble into the page because of Commons:Commons:Deletion_requests/File:IDH_Mundial.PNG and a sockpuppeteer with a range of ip's that vandalizes any page to promote Nicaragua. Those kind of articles really attract ips from all over the place trying to show the world their "country is better than yours." Keep a watch on it. --John KB (talk) 01:51, 11 November 2010 (UTC)
You probably mean Kirbyn4 right? I know what you mean with those kind of vandals. At least in Kirbyn's case, he seems to have died down a bit. Elockid (Talk) 02:19, 11 November 2010 (UTC)
When they're blocked repeatedly, they have to. We've dealt with one from Arab France who permanently adds the same article and the same fake references to support his/her claims, thankfully he/she's been warned and blocked each time. There was one from Poland who always had to put Polish people first on any list, to make them look more important and the first thing you saw in any article. Right now, there's one from the Philippines who repeatedly creates usernames, makes 4 edits max in each account to avoid blocking, then creates a new one. Then changes to ip vandalism, different ip each time. May need a CheckUser on him/her, but who would be the sockpuppeteer? Lol. Then we have those who WP:CITESPAM and WP:ADVERT, but that's another sneaky topic. It's really amazing to see what some people do on WP. --John KB (talk) 02:38, 11 November 2010 (UTC)
Usually when I don't know who the sockmaster is, I usually designate the first created account as the sockmaster. Sometimes CU will find out who the sockmaster is. Elockid (Talk) 04:46, 11 November 2010 (UTC)
Thanks, will do that. If my understanding is correct, they would also find dormant accounts created by the same user. She/he may not display foresight, but who knows? Thanks. --John KB (talk) 12:05, 11 November 2010 (UTC)

about your words

sir,

i remember you said this words on my talk page "cough. Btw, the next census in India isn't until 2011. Also, the Surat population you keep speaking off are actual estimates, not actual figures".firstly i would advice you to clear your facts.do you know that the indian census is almost completed.and you are saying that census will be in 2011.then you are in sleep."WAKE UP BABY".secondly,i agree that surat population are estimates.but,do you think that world gazettar is more reliable in estimates than the municipal corporation of the city itself.also, one thing i forgot to tell you that i recently edited the ahmedabad article with the 2001 census population.but spacemansniff leaved me a message saying "stop, your disruptive edits".now, using 2001 census population is also disruptive."GOD BLESS WIKIPEDIA MAN" for there false estimates.

Lol! Almost completed. At least the information I am taking from is directly stated from the source. I did not also misquote the source passing them off as official estimates. The official website that does the census of India which you can find here states that the next census will be in 2011. Here's one of their headlines: Welcome to Census 2011 & National Population Register(NPR) Programme. I don't know where you're getting your information from, but it is probably a bogus source. The cough cough statement was to show that you were contradicting yourself. CityMayors is not and does not use official census data. Though you have stated that the municipal estimate is more reliable, you have showed by the diff I put in SpacemanSpiff's talk page that you truly do not believe so because it appears you believe CityMayors is the most reliable by replacing the municipal estimate with the CityMayors estimate. The reason your edits are disruptive because you are editing tendentiously and not trying to form any sort of consensus despite 3 different editors disagreeing with you. Elockid (Talk) 21:34, 12 November 2010 (UTC)

Hi, Elockid. Could you do something about Brazil's article? There is an editor called Eduardo Sellan III who insists on adding figures without proper sources and his edits has been reverted by me and another editor but he keeps reverting it. Thanks, --Lecen (talk) 17:38, 12 November 2010 (UTC)

I already requested full protection to the page.

Seems like Pristino stopped edit warring. His last edit wasn't to revert you or to what was disputed about. I am keeping an eye though. Elockid (Talk) 12:44, 14 November 2010 (UTC)

Continuation

Sorry I took so long to respond. Your answers are great! But I'll clarify it a little for questions 9 and 10... As you may know, Wikipedia considered imposing this new editing policy, like an editor "hierarchy". You can read about it here: http://www.linuxinsider.com/story/67954.html. I know it's a little outdated... For questions 9 and 10 (sorry I didn't clarify beforehand) I meant this particular policy, and by "changes" (Q10) I'm referring to the way in which Wikipedia will change as a whole, if this policy is (or isn't) imposed. Thanks again!

Marialaurapa (talk) 18:14, 14 November 2010 (UTC)

From the article, I really don't see the need of having designated editors checking for inaccuracies, vandalism, etc. Wikipedians freely do this all the time including myself. It would be nice to have more hands to help out, but the way that it would be implemented based on the article won't probably make a difference. The current volunteers will probably serve as the editors described in the article and would be still doing the same tasks as they have been doing. I think we did have an "editor" group, but that was quickly removed. However, speaking about biographies of living persons (BLPs), the headline of the article, I am a supporter of having guidelines, policies, or restrictions on these articles. We already have some which you can see here. These are very sensitive articles. Even in journalism, having the wrong kind of information published could be damaging to the magazine, newspaper, etc. and could ultimately get themselves sued. That's why only "qualified" people are allowed to write articles about people in magazines and such. The same idea should be upheld in Wikipedia for BLPs as the consequences also applies here. There at least needs to be some degree of experience needed to be involved in BLPs to ensure that negative consequences do not occur. Elockid (Alternate) (Talk) 16:33, 17 November 2010 (UTC)

re-blocking of communicat

Hi, I see I've been reblocked, but there's no indication of how long this reblocking is to be in force. Please let me know expiry date of re-block at my talk page, where you posted the re-block notice. Thanks. 196.210.181.54 (talk) 13:48, 19 November 2010 (UTC) Communicat

PS: I'm also a bit confused about the sending of messages during block period. The 1st block prevented me from sending messages; this re-block apparently allows me to send messages. I'm baffled. 196.210.181.54 (talk) Communicat

Good call

This was the right call, in my opinion. I was going to circle back and make that block myself but that pesky work thing got in the way. :-)  Frank  |  talk  00:59, 20 November 2010 (UTC)

Thanks. Good to know someone shares the same thoughts. Elockid (Talk) 01:34, 20 November 2010 (UTC)

User: 66.127.61.83

I note that you have blocked this user. May I also suggest that the editor who first abused this contributor, 7Letters also serves a ban. If you look at the history of this edit war, it was 7Letters who abused this user. The user then reacted. In the interests of demonstrating that wiki is a fair and functioning site, I think it is better to punish equally and fairly. TVArchivistUK (talk) 00:32, 22 November 2010 (UTC)

Taken directly from the blocking policy: Blocks are used to prevent damage or disruption to Wikipedia, not to punish users. The IP may be unblock immediately as soon as they make it clear that they retract their any legal ambitions they might have and agree not to pursue any more legal action. Elockid (Talk) 00:37, 22 November 2010 (UTC)

It takes two! All I can see is that one editor reacted to comments made by another. The first editor, who remains at liberty to edit abused the blocked editor and ignited an edit war. A block therefore seems highly appropriate for the former, not the latter. TVArchivistUK (talk) 00:50, 22 November 2010 (UTC)

The block was made in accordance to our policy of no legal threats which the IP has made. Might I also add that several established editors have reverted them several times on Zara Phillips which appears to be the main concern. This itself is disruptive and editing tendentiously. If you can provide a diff where the other editor made a legal threat, then please provide it. If you wish to pursue having the other editor blocked further, you may do so at ANI. Please remember to inform the other editor as indicated on the notice on ANI. Elockid (Talk) 01:25, 22 November 2010 (UTC)

Seems little point. You've tacitly admitted that you blocked a user before you'd researched the full background. You're asking me to provide evidence, when you should know it already. I get more and more disenchanted, nay disgusted, with this site everyday. If reacting to abuse get yous banned, then that speaks volumes about wikipedia. TVArchivistUK (talk) 04:07, 22 November 2010 (UTC)

I noted WP:BLP and also noted that legal threats are not allowed at Wikipedia. This editor posted the "information" on THREE articles and introduced it into the very first paragraph which is awfully suspected. May I ask why you've vested so much interest in me that you've written a figurative book about it on my page? It reeks of the nonsense over the paternity of Prince Henry of Wales, the discussion of which does not belong in the first paragraph (especially when it is a nasty rumour). Seven Letters 04:15, 22 November 2010 (UTC)

If you had bothered to read the figurative book that I have written on your page, then you'd understand my point of view. Sarcasm as as misplaced as legal action. I can't see where else in an article the "suspected" information should be placed, but since you've appointed yourself the arbiter of this page, then I imagine you will continue to guard it jealously to ensure no further "nasty rumours" are posted there. THREE times or otherwise. I imagine I'm now under scrutiny myself and will probably be serving a ban next. TVArchivistUK (talk) 05:30, 22 November 2010 (UTC)

Like I have been saying, please read the relevant policies I have pointed to you before commenting any further. Elockid (Talk) 04:24, 22 November 2010 (UTC)

Sorry about that. I looked on the creators talk page and saw three warnings with the same page name so assumed that the article had been created 3 times. Wouldn't have requested create protection if I knew it was only once! Thanks for looking into it anyway. --5 albert square (talk) 01:56, 22 November 2010 (UTC)

No need to say sorry. It was a helpful report and there was a lot of disruption happening there. Elockid (Talk) 01:59, 22 November 2010 (UTC)
It was a weird one, there seemed to be a lot of sock/meatpuppetry going on there. I ended up just camping out on the page with Huggle just to revert the speedy deletion templates being removed! I've added the page to my watchlist anyway so it should hopefully pop up on my watchlist if the page is re-created again. Hopefully it won't be though. --5 albert square (talk) 02:07, 22 November 2010 (UTC)
It's also one my watchlist. I'm also hoping that it won't get recreated. Elockid (Talk) 02:09, 22 November 2010 (UTC)

"== Hello =="

hello Elockid my name is Aaron Cargill- it is to my understanding that you recently deleted an article of mine (Robbie Leopardi) the reason was that he is not important (A7: Article about a real person, which does not indicate the importance or significance of the subject) I just wanted to tell you that he is very important, for example when you google robbie l "Robbie Leopardi" is the first suggestion on top of people like Robbie Lawler (a famous ufc fighter) who by the way has a wikipedia page so if you are going to delete that page why arent you going to delete Robbie Lawler under the same reasons? or please put the page Robbie Leopardi back up- i spent alot of time writing that page on a significant person not for it to be deleted but for people to know about him.

Aaron cargill (talk) 11:20, 22 November 2010 (UTC)

It seems I wasn't the only one who has deleted the article under the same criteria. Looking at the page again, I do not see anything that distinguishes them from the average painter. There was no assertion why he is important. The only information that was written about was what they have been painting, interests, and what they do. See Wikipedia:Notability (people). If you want, I may userfy the page and you may work on it. After you feel the article satisfies notability, then you can request the protection currently set at the article to be removed which you can do at WP:RFPP. Elockid (Talk) 12:19, 22 November 2010 (UTC)

Indef for IPs

Took me a while to check on this thread, but quite right, that was my oversight, sorry; hadn't realised it was an IP making the threats. Regards, GiftigerWunsch [TALK] 01:35, 23 November 2010 (UTC)

Largest empires

Please can you explain where the edit war comes in with this article? I have been trying to consolidate the 6 lists into one list, so that we can save space/loading, etc. It's just tedious to repeat the same information many times, and everybody who has responded on the talk page agrees.

Surely the best way of protecting the article is to have a word with the person who keeps reverting it every time progress is made? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.141.22.33 (talkcontribs)

The edit war is between yourself and the 190.134.x.x IP. The reverting between you two has been going on for more than two weeks now. Perhaps by leaving a longer protection, the other party will be willing to discuss. Perhaps also talking to the IP on their talk page for a faster response? Elockid (Talk) 01:33, 25 November 2010 (UTC)
I've requested discussion several times without success. There is usually not even an edit summary... As I said, as of right now, there has been one response after about a month, and they have agreed with me. Come to think of it, you haven't even stated your opinion on the matter.
I'm going to try and remain neutral here. I hope you don't mind. Elockid (Talk) 20:55, 25 November 2010 (UTC)
Well that's part of the problem then. If you don't disagree with the improvements, and if nobody else does either, and if the improvements have the support of everybody who's replied, even after many requests for discussion, how is this the best way forwards? If the one person who reverts is not able to articulate why they disagree, then surely they shouldn't be involved in editing an article like this?
Nobody objecting doesn't necessarily mean obtaining consensus. Well, that's not how it works around here anyways. You can obtain consensus by contacting editors who are active in editing the article that a discussion on changes to the article is occurring. Be sure not to make it seem like your canvassing for support. If there is an agreement that the editors would like to keep the change, they actually state it, the article can be unprotected and the change can be implemented. If the other editor refuses to accept the consensus, they may be blocked/rangeblocked for tendentious editing. Given that the article is large, WP:Article length could be used as a guideline. Elockid (Talk) 13:01, 27 November 2010 (UTC)
Indeed, people have stated they agree with my edits - in fact, 100% of the respondents have done! Indeed, length was my prime motivation in making the changesl What we have is one list repeated 5, 6, or 7 times. If that list had 3 entries, it would be fine, but that list has over 200... The person reverting has used a different IP each time (each with just one edit), so I fear blocking won't do much good.
Well one other person agreeing with you isn't really obtaining a consensus. Why don't you notify some of editors who are active in the article to try to get a better consensus? Also, don't worry about the person IP hopping. I can block more than IP at the same time. Elockid (Talk) 00:03, 1 December 2010 (UTC)
OK, I just spammed the 23 people who have edited the article in the last month or so, and Dingo1729 had already mentioned the edits to MauriManya, asking "I'm in favor of the table format instead of the list, for reasons given on the talk page there. I may change it back to the table format, but I thought I'd check your opinion first". There was no answer.

Thank you. It is quite telling that at least one of them was already previously blocked as being an open proxy. At the very least, that particular IP should be blocked for 2 years or more, and logged at WP:ARBSCI. -- Cirt (talk) 23:57, 3 December 2010 (UTC)

Wikinger range block

Hi Elickid. I have blocked 83.26.49.0/24 for a week, as Wikinger seems to have embarked on a rather unpleasant virus campaign. It's my first range block, so please correct it if I have inadvertently kicked all of Poland off Wikipedia. Favonian (talk) 17:15, 6 December 2010 (UTC)

Everything looks good. It doesn't look like a particularly active range and it seems like he's been the only one using that range for about 2 weeks or so. All in all, I don't think collateral should be very high if at any. Elockid (Alternate) (Talk) 17:23, 6 December 2010 (UTC)

The edits to my userpage

Thank you for reverting the edits to my userpage earlier today. I actually didn't notice them until I got on right now despite being on since they were made...I did take a look at the edits Brokenradar (talk · contribs) made, and I went ahead and restored all but one of them. They're minor copyedit style changes to the point where I don't mind them, however thank you for reverting them in any case, as it gave me a chance to review them before displaying them, so to speak.

ANI

Hello. This message is being sent to inform you that there currently is a discussion at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents#IP anon going around changing "Burma" to "Myanmar" despite being told not to regarding an issue with which you may have been involved. Thank you.

As you're the blocking admin, your comments are welcome. Strange Passerby (talkcontribs) 01:46, 20 November 2010 (UTC)

Would you suggest a checkuser if the IP continues after the next block expiry? Strange Passerby (talkcontribs) 04:42, 21 November 2010 (UTC)
There really isn't anything else a CU can say or do here since we already know the IP. If an account is created, CUs will probably decline relating the account to the IP publicly, but we can probably just go by the duck test. Any similar IPs, IPs editing in a similar range, similar/same location or open proxies can probably be blocked using the duck test. Elockid (Talk) 04:48, 21 November 2010 (UTC)

FYI the editor is back to making questionable edits. Strange Passerby (talkcontribs) 15:50, 28 November 2010 (UTC)

He's come off a long block for edit warring and appears to have gone around reverting a number of my edits for no apparent reason other than because they were made by me. Just a heads up that he's back and should probably be watched. Thanks. Strange Passerby (talkcontribs) 13:48, 21 December 2010 (UTC)

Is this Pontiac? Seems similar, but I haven't seen Pontiac in a while. cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 06:00, 18 December 2010 (UTC)

Based on the IPs and what they were editing, I'd say they are. I've already reblocked their IP range, one of them was already autoblocked beforehand and that IP matched Mrpontiac's range, so that's a good sign. I've asked Tnxman for another look since this is basically the 5th time the range has been blocked. We might be able to hardblock the range pending CU investigation to prevent any missed accounts from popping up since CU won't go back more than 3 months. Elockid (Talk) 13:08, 18 December 2010 (UTC)

Man, you beat me to the block by a second :)

I don't think semi'ing ANI is a good solution, though (even for a few hours); do you think there's any other solution? Maybe an edit filter or something? /ƒETCHCOMMS/ 23:21, 19 December 2010 (UTC)

That's the only solution I could come up to my ability for IP hoppers. Not very good with filters so I can't really comment there. I don't mind if you or any other admin remove the semi. Elockid (Talk) 23:23, 19 December 2010 (UTC)
I'm not good at filters either, nor do I think PC would end up well, so I guess leaving the semi for a few hours is fine. I never realized that this happens regularly, every few weeks at ANI. Cheers, /ƒETCHCOMMS/ 23:27, 19 December 2010 (UTC)

British Columbia

Apparently you blocked a large portion of the government of British Columbia, 142.29.0.0 to 142.33.255.255. Could you explain the reasons for this? Their IT department is asking me questions. They asked me to update their XFF entries, which I did. So given that, is there any need for such a wide range to be blocked for such a long period of time? -- Tim Starling (talk) 13:00, 20 December 2010 (UTC)

The IPs based on previous individual blocks and rangeblocks seem to be schools and many of them have been continuously abused for quite some time (looks like for years) with little to no constructive edits, hence the block ending at July as an estimate of when school gets out. A good example is the article Chief Pontiac on May 28 with a vandalism spree using many different IPs. Vandalism sprees from what I found are not uncommon with this range.
The IT staff may check the kinds of contributions these ranges are making:
142.29.0.0/16
142.30.0.0/16
142.31.0.0/16
142.32.0.0/16
142.33.0.0/16 (most heavily abused range)
If need be, you or another person may remove the blocks. I apologize for any inconvenience. Elockid (Alternate) (Talk) 13:46, 20 December 2010 (UTC)
Yes, there are schools in that range. If the range was listed at Wikipedia:Blocking IP addresses#Addresses of organizations with a responsive IRT, would you have blocked them anyway? Just wondering if it's worthwhile to make an entry for them. -- Tim Starling (talk) 14:08, 20 December 2010 (UTC)
Probably wouldn't have blocked them at first. However though, after doing some recent digging, an abuse response for British Columbia was filed about a year ago, there appeared some willingness to help deal with the vandalism. Apparently, it doesn't like it help much in terms of the general range. There still appears to be a significant amount vandalism coming from the range. The IP however did seem like they have stopped so that is a good sign. It hasn't edited in about two weeks since the block expired. The block expired not too long so I can't comment whether or not the abuse response truly helped or not. Elockid (Alternate) (Talk) 14:29, 20 December 2010 (UTC)
