Information icon Hello and welcome to Wikipedia. When you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion (but never when editing articles), such as at Wikipedia:Help desk, please be sure to sign your posts. There are two ways to do this. Either:

  1. Add four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment; or
  2. With the cursor positioned at the end of your comment, click on the signature button ( in the enhanced toolbar, or if you use the old "classic" toolbar) located above the edit window.

This will automatically insert a signature with your username or IP address and the time you posted the comment. This information is necessary to allow other editors to easily see who wrote what and when.

Thank you. Drm310 🍁 (talk) 21:08, 27 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there, and thanks for trying to help. I'm not a lawyer and even if I were, I would be prohibited by Wikipedia policy from providing legal advice here, and you probably should not take legal advice from random posts on the Internet in any event. However, I did notice something interesting. It seems to me that the copyright in your paintings must either belong to you (by inheritance) or to the painter's estate. If the latter, it would ordinarily be a real mess to try to get permission, But in this case, we have a clue. There is an image of a painting at the Joseph S. Kozlowski article. the image is Tulum and that image was released into the public domain by a person who claims to be the copyright holder. The user who did this is Joekoz451 (talk · contribs). Based on the name and self-description, he is probably the inheritor of any copyright by the artist. If you wish, you can contact him (by clicking on the "talk" link). He can upload your pictures with an assertion that he is the copyright holder and that he is licensing them. I recommend that He he use the CC-BY-SA rather than a release to public domain, and that he upload to wikicommons rather than en.wikipedia. Use CC-BY-SA because some countries are attempting to pass laws that allow publishers to "claim" PD works and remove them from the public domain. Wikicommons is available to all other language wikipedias. Note that while photographs in general have copyright and the copyright resides with the photographer, this is not true for a "faithful reproduction of a two-dimensional work" namely the painting. In this case the copyright of the original work applies to the photograph. Your contact to him should probably include a release of any claim on the copyright. He could do this in the other direction instead, I suppose.

I personally am extremely frustrated by the ridiculous restrictions imposed by the current copyright laws. They are causing a great deal more harm than good. However, if we do not try to follow them, then wikipedia as a whole is at risk, so we do the best we can. -Arch dude (talk) 18:51, 28 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
