Question[edit]

{{help}}

I have a question: What is the copyright status of deleted images? Can someone point me to some wiki-page talking about this. Are deleted files completely deleted from the servers? What is the policy about that?

The copyright status of an image doesn't change when it is deleted from Wikipedia. If an image is free before it is deleted, it is free after it is deleted. If it is copyrighted before it is deleted from Wikipedia, it is copyrighted after is deleted. The copyright status of a deleted image doesn't matter anyway to Wikipedia because it cannot be used on Wikipedia.
To answer your second question, files that are deleted are not completely deleted from the servers. Any file (or any page) can be undeleted by an administrator.
The policy on deletion can be read at Wikipedia:Deletion policy, and requests to undelete a file or page are made at Wikipedia:Deletion review. Please let me know if there are any more questions. Thanks! --Mysdaao talk 19:54, 27 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed deletion of Niagara Falls Pictures[edit]

The article Niagara Falls Pictures has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Wikipedia is not an image repository.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the Proposed Deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The Speedy Deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and Articles for Deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. -- Shadowlynk (Talk) 02:57, 6 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Franklin.vp, please note that the Niagara Falls article already links to the image gallery on Wikimedia Commons. Feel free to add to this gallery if you want to provide further images of Niagara Falls. Thank you. AJCham talk 04:27, 6 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Source info on pics[edit]

Hi again Franklin.vp, I notice that the images you uploaded have no 'Source' data. I don't doubt that you created the images (the metadata indicates they were all taken by the same camera), but you should add some short text: "Own work by uploader" or similar as the source. I'd also like to congratulate you on some great shots - love the CN tower pics. Furthermore, I think you should consider placing the images on Commons, as more people can benefit that way. Regards, AJCham talk 17:38, 6 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Donkey punch[edit]

It seems to me that your concerns about the illustration would be better addressed by producing a better illustration. I think the image surely adds to the reader's understanding of the subject of the article, even if the article is more detailed. If you disagree, and it appears you do, I recommend you start a discussion at the article's talk page instead of simply removing the image. --Maxamegalon2000 04:42, 24 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Dear uploader: The media file you uploaded as File:ConceptualphotoAnorexia.jpg has been listed for speedy deletion because you selected a copyright license type implying some type of restricted use, such as for non-commercial use only, or for educational use only or for use on Wikipedia by permission. While it might seem reasonable to assume that such files can be freely used on Wikipedia, this is in fact not the case[1][2]. Please do not upload any more files with these restrictions on them, because images on Wikipedia need to be compatible with the GNU Free Documentation License or another free license, which allow anyone to use it for any purpose, commercial or non-commercial. See our non-free content guidelines for more more information.

If you created this media file and want to use it on Wikipedia, you may re-upload it (or amend the image description if it has not yet been deleted) and use the license {{GFDL-self}} to license it under the GFDL, or {{cc-by-sa-3.0}} to license it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license, or use {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain.

If you did not create this media file, please understand that the vast majority of images found on the internet are not appropriate for Wikipedia. Most content on the internet is copyrighted and the creator of the image has exclusive rights to use it. Wikipedia respects the copyrights of others - do not upload images that violate others' copyrights. In certain limited cases, we may be able to use an image under a claim of fair use - if you are certain that fair use would apply here, you may choose one of the fair use tags from this list. If no fair use rationale applies, you may want to contact the copyright holder and request that they make the media available under a free license.

If you have any questions please ask at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Thank you. —SpaceFlight89 03:19, 28 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

FPC Voting[edit]

Hi Franklin. When voting at Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates could you please ensure you include a bullet point before your vote. This is an FPC convention which you will notice all others follow, but you never do so. This is easy to do - simply add an asterisk * before your vote and it shows as a bullet. Thanks, --jjron (talk) 15:12, 20 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

NowCommons: File:NiagaraFallsShoeHorse.jpg[edit]

File:NiagaraFallsShoeHorse.jpg is now available on Wikimedia Commons as Commons:File:NiagaraFallsShoeHorse.jpg. This is a repository of free media that can be used on all Wikimedia wikis. The image will be deleted from Wikipedia, but this doesn't mean it can't be used anymore. You can embed an image uploaded to Commons like you would an image uploaded to Wikipedia, in this case: [[File:NiagaraFallsShoeHorse.jpg]]. Re: ATTACK[edit]

I am going to assume here that you did not mean to attack me. I am going to assume this because I blatantly declared that I respond poorly to that type of thing. That being said, never post on my user talk again. I do not value your opinions, and do not wish to hear you speak, as it is clear that your understanding of what I am doing at FPC is near nonexistent. I have removed your comments. Goodbye.  Nezzadar [SPEAK]  03:55, 31 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Okay. Here.

Hello, Franklin.vp. This message is being sent to inform you that there currently is a discussion at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents regarding an issue with which you may have been involved. Thank you.

Hint[edit]

Please stop the constant intimidation at Nezzadar's talk page. They are serving nothing but to turn the situation inflammatory. You've stated your point several times and Nezzadar clearly doesn't want you near him. Take a step back so things can get better. ZooFariBoo! 07:28, 1 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sanctions[edit]

Franklin, I'm going to level with you. You've been extremely incivil towards Nazzadar. Now, civility is a cornerstone of Wikipedia, this being a collaborative project. But you seem to be suffering from a chronic lack of AGF towards this user. I read his comments myself that seemed to have sparked this, and from my years of experience, there's nothing in there of concern. However, the way you carried your dispute to Nazzadar's talk page has been completely inappropriate. But since you're a newbie, I'll assume good faith instead of blocking you outright.

Here's my deal with you, and I'm going to post this to the relevant section on ANI. Stay away from Nazzadar. Don't post to his talk page. Stay away from him in discussion. Be civil. If you can follow this, you won't be blocked. Someguy1221 (talk) 07:30, 1 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You can see the discussion at Wikipedia:ANI#Personal_attacks_by_User:Franklin.vp. For Nazzadar's part, he has voluntarily committed to be less controversial at FPC. As for his own edits, like I said, I looked through them and didn't see anything troubling. If you would like for me to comment on something specific, please link to a diff. Someguy1221 (talk) 08:02, 1 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Your recent edits[edit]

Hello. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. You may also click on the signature button located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your username or IP address and the time you posted the comment. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when. Thank you. --SineBot (talk) 17:34, 2 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Withdraws on PPR[edit]

For future reference, at Peer Picture Review, things are rather informal. I don't think there is a withdraw process, you just cut out the nomination from PPR and paste it in the archives, in this case Wikipedia:Picture peer review/Archives/Oct-Dec 2009. I did it for you :). Also, if the version ZooFari helped you with is good, feel free to nominate it to FP or VP. If it isn't perfect, I suggest VP, and when it is perfect, you can then nominate it to FP, which is common enough. Note that FP is higher than VP and no image can be both, so a promoved VP loses VP when it becomes an FP. Either way, if you get it out there, it will be seen by more people and put in more pages. Enjoy, Nezzadar [SPEAK] 05:41, 3 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Logging in[edit]

OK, it seems to be solved. Franklin.vp  14:27, 3 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Too many capital letters[edit]

Hello. Please note that per WP:MOS, a section heading should not say Normal Crossing Divisors, but rather Normal crossing divisors. See my recent edits to that article. The first letter of a heading is normally capitalized; later letters are capitalized only if, for example, they are initial letters of someone's name, or there is otherwise a special reason to capitalize them. Re Japan photos of people[edit]

Replied on my talkpage. --jjron (talk) 13:06, 6 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The source you provided [3] is dead and the main page [4] doesn't have any note of (c). Some of these can be uploaded as {{Non-free mugshot}} - you just need to determine if the criteria in that template match the restrictions by the creating agency.  Skier Dude  ►  00:11, 9 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It's been restored with the correct license - you'll have to fill in the "Fair use Rationale" on the image description page (I put the basic template there) and also restore the image to the article in question.  Skier Dude  ►  00:28, 9 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
As the uploader you have to give a description (i.e. mug shot) - what article its going to placed on - purpose (i.e. reason its on the article) - replaceable (if it's been used on the article to describe the arrest, state something like that). The other fields are already filled in.  Skier Dude  ►  00:41, 9 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

ANI archive[edit]

Heya, just as a heads-up, your comment here was (probably inadvertently) placed on an archive page.[5] So if you want someone to actually see it, it probably needs to go elsewhere... FYI, --Elonka 03:30, 9 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hyphen ≠ endash[edit]

Why isn't this article appearing when I search for "Hilbert-Samuel function" or "Hilbert Samuel function"?

Because the article's title uses an endash whereas you used a hyphen. I've created a new redirect page whose title has a hyphen, redirecting to the article whose title has an endash.

Wikipedia's style conventions prescribe an endash for this sort of thing, but whenever you create a new article, it's a good idea to create redirect pages with alternative spellings, alternative capitalizations, and commonplace misspellings, misnomers, alternative names, etc. Then when people search for the page, or link to the page, using one of those other names, they won't find themselves in the situation that happened to you. Michael Hardy (talk) 03:10, 9 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

...OK, I'm looking at the edit history. It seems you must have created the article by following a link from another article, and the link had an endash, but you may have failed to notice that it was not a hyphen. Michael Hardy (talk) 03:15, 9 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

When an article, such as this one, is officially flagges as a possible copyright violation, and the flag specifically says that the article should not be edited until it has been reviewed by an admin, then it means exactly that. Please do not remove copyvio tags. --Anthony.bradbury"talk" 11:30, 20 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Rewriting copyright concerns[edit]

Hi. I very much appreciate your efforts to help with rewriting this article. As the template covering it says, though, rewriting should be done from scratch in the linked temporary space. This is to avoid creating an unauthorized derivative work. Also, I'm afraid that overwriting copyright violations in the manner that you attempted here can be much more difficult, because with sentence by sentence revision, it is hard to escape the existing language and structure of a source, both of which are protected by United States' copyright laws. Compare, for instance, the following material from the source:

Extended content

The Planck length is the scale at which classical ideas about gravity and space-time cease to be valid, and quantum effects dominate. This is the ‘quantum of length’, the smallest measurement of length with any meaning. And roughly equal to 1.6 x 10-35 m or about 10-20 times the size of a proton. The Planck time is the time it would take a photon travelling at the speed of light to across a distance equal to the Planck length. This is the ‘quantum of time’, the smallest measurement of time that has any meaning, and is equal to 10-43 seconds. No smaller division of time has any meaning.

As it has stood, the Wikipedia article has said:

The Planck length is the scale at which classical ideas about gravity and spacetime cease to be valid, and quantum effects dominate. This is the quantum of length or space, the smallest measurement of length with any meaning which is about to 1.6 x 10-35 m. The Planck time is the time it would take a photon at the speed of light to travel a distance equal to the Planck length. This is the quantum of time.... No smaller division of time has any apparent meaning.

Your revision changes some of the language, but none of the structure and retains the overall feel of the original piece, where it said:

The Planck length is the quantum of length or space, is the scale at which classical notions about gravity and spacetime cease to be valid, and quantum effects dominate. It is the smallest measurement of length theoretically available and set to be about 1.6 x 10-35 m. The Planck time can be defined as the time it would take a photon at the speed of light to travel the distance equal to the Planck length. ....Smaller divisions of time have no any apparent meaning.

The facts, of course, are not copyrighted, but any rewrite that retains enough of the feel of the original that copying seems obvious stands a risk of rising to the level of substantial similarity in a US court of law. In this case, copying is obvious because much of the language remains the same and the order of material is largely retained.

The essay Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing contains some suggestions for rewriting that may help avoid these issues. The article Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2009-04-13/Dispatches, while about plagiarism rather than copyright concerns, also contains some suggestions for reusing material from sources that may be helpful, beginning under "Avoiding plagiarism".

More than the material identified will need to be rewritten. Given the history of this contributor, it is very likely as well that additional sources have been infringed upon in this article. It will need to be deleted. The purpose of blanking it is to allow contributors familiar with this area an opportunity to write a completely new article before it is. The new article should, again, be written in the temporary space that is now linked from the article's front. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 12:20, 20 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This post obviously crosses a line it should not have. I was about to write something nasty in reply, but as I clicked "Save", my internet connection suddenly crashed. Functorial resolution of singularities[edit]

Hi Franklin,

In which "file page" do you see the error? I can't reproduce it. If you mean when you click on the svg link and your browser opens the file, that's probably because your browser renders the file differently from the way Wikipedia does. If you want a preview of the Wikipedia rendering on your computer, you can use librsvg. --Slashme (talk) 21:27, 25 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It happens for some reason in the image page [6]. When I click to see the image it is rendered fine in my browser and also in the article resolution of singularities is fine. Don't worry too much about it, since it looks fine in the important places.  franklin  21:56, 25 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

    • Fair enough. Actually, the thing that prompted me to ask was when you said "Has this picture Featured status?". The most common way to say this would be "Does this picture have featured status?" or if you want to start with the word 'has', it would be "Has this picture got featured status?". Anyway, sorry, I didn't mean to turn this into an English lesson, and we all make mistakes when rushing. :-) Ðiliff «» (Talk) 12:28, 18 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
