Your question about RefToolbar

On some talk page you asked about me seeing "Publication date" when I set my preferences to receive help in creating citations. Normally, I set my preferences to not see any of the "helpful" buttons in the edit interface; normally I find them to be not worth the pixels they occupy. But I had tried to set my preferences to help the person who asked a question.

Please tell me what boxes to check in preferences to see the RefToolbar you are thinking of.

My skin is the default Vector skin. To get citation help, I clicked the Editing tab in Preferences and then the "Show edit toolbar (requires JavaScript)" checkbox.

While editing, I clicked the right most box, {{Cite}}. Then I clicked the Web button. In the resulting window, the third text box in the right column was labeled "Publication date:". Jc3s5h (talk) 21:52, 29 January 2014 (UTC)

Got it. You are using RefToolbar 1.0. That calls MediaWiki:RefToolbarLegacy.js. 'Publication date' should be populating the 'date' field. --  Gadget850 talk 22:00, 29 January 2014 (UTC)

Yourcss and Yourjs

I saw {{Yourcss}} and {{Yourjs}}. They could also allow css/js=skin. Special:MyPage/skin.css and Special:MyPage/skin.js redirect to the user's current skin.

Many editors don't bother to write instructions when they post code, and many users don't know what to do with the code. I have previously thought about creating a simple instruction template {{Add js}} with something like: "Add the code to Special:MyPage/common.js to work in all skins, or Special:MyPage/skin.js to work in your current skin." Similarly for {{Add css}}. But maybe it would be preferable to combine it with your templates. PrimeHunter (talk) 01:58, 20 February 2014 (UTC)

DC Meetups in March

Happy March!

Though we have a massive snowstorm coming up, spring is just around the corner! Personally, I am looking forward to warmer weather.

Wikimedia DC is looking forward to a spring full of cool and exciting activities. In March, we have coming up:

  • Evening WikiSalon on Wednesday, March 12 from 7 PM – 9 PM. Meet up with Wikipedians for coffee at the Cove co-working space in Dupont Circle! If you cannot make it in the evening, join us at our...
  • March Meetup on Sunday, March 23 from 3 PM – 6 PM. Our monthly weekend meetup, same place as last month. Meet really cool and interesting people!
  • Women in the Arts 2014 meetup and edit-a-thon on Sunday, March 30 from 10 AM – 5 PM. Our second annual Women in the Arts edit-a-thon, held at the National Museum of Women in the Arts. Free lunch will be served!

DiverScout

DiverScout has done nothing but attack me over the Independent Scout and Scout-like organizations in the United States. I have tried to discuss it with him and all he does is claim I don't know English or scouting.' He started a discussion over a name changed, despite being challenged on the talk page, he move the article any ways. He can seem to comprehend basic logic so he attacks my English. Which under WP is not allowed. He has claimed that I want ownership in the article because I claim ownership because I reversed an edit with source that doesn't verify what they claim is part of the history the current B-PSA. Then he claims I cannot reason. And the attacks continue even after requesting him to knock it off. With stating what he is doing as if I am doing it. He has made it clear that he doesn't have a clue about what is going on in Scouting WikiProject as he has assumed I haven't contributed and/or unknowledgeable in the subject (not true as Trail Life USA, British Boys Scouts, New England Boy Scouts, American Boy Scouts all have major contributions by me), but given his attitude I expect that he will not listen as he seem to have his mind made up. So you need to deal with him as an administrator and project leader or at least tell me how to deal with him. Spshu (talk) 16:46, 4 March 2014 (UTC)

An exciting month of wiki events!

Hello there,

I am pleased to say that April will be a very exciting month for Wikipedia in Washington, DC. We have a lot of different events coming up, so you will have a lot to choose from.

First, a reminder that our second annual Women in the Arts Edit-a-Thon will take place on Sunday, March 30 at the National Museum of Women in the Arts.

Coming up in April, we have our first-ever Open Government WikiHack with the Sunlight Foundation on April 5–6! We are working together to use open government data to improve the Wikimedia projects, and we would love your help. All are welcome, regardless of coding or editing experience. We will also be having a happy hour the day before, with refreshments courtesy of the Sunlight Foundation.

On Friday, April 11 we are having our first edit-a-thon ever with the Library of Congress. The Africa Collection Edit-a-Thon will focus on the Library's African and Middle East Reading Room. It'll be early in the morning, but it's especially worth it if you're interested in improving Wikipedia's coverage of African topics.

The following day, we are having our second annual Wiki Loves Capitol Hill training. We will discuss policy issues relevant to Wikimedia and plan for our day of outreach to Congressional staffers that will take place during the following week.

There are other meetups in the works, so be sure to check our meetup page with the latest. I hope to see you at some of these events!

"Small" template

Hi, I'm not sure why replacing <small></small> by {{small}} counts as "cleaning up", as per your edit to Liliaceae. Is there some advantage to the use of the template? As I edit mainly plant articles, I use <small></small> quite often, so I'm interested in why the template might be better. (Naively, it seems worse, because it requires extra processing time over raw HTML.)

Is it just the argument, as per the documentation of the template, that browsers otherwise render <small></small> differently? Peter coxhead (talk) 17:41, 17 April 2014 (UTC)

And I would agree with you, and indeed have AfDed temples such as {{div}} and {{span}}. But, as noted in the {{small}} documentation, the implementation of <small> is inconsistent across browsers. Thus, the template works better in this instance. --  Gadget850 talk 17:44, 17 April 2014 (UTC)
Um... The implementation of quite a few HTML features is inconsistent across browsers, but we don't attempt to compensate for them.
Anyway, if the template is to be recommended for use with biological authorities rather than raw HTML, consistency will require some other changes. For example, Template:Species list/line will need to be changed so that the same small size is produced by {{Species list}}. I haven't quite worked out where the small tag is introduced in the maze of taxobox and automated taxobox templates, but it needs fixing there too. Peter coxhead (talk) 17:51, 17 April 2014 (UTC)

COinS Metadata

I noticed from a comment you made on Wikipedia talk:RefToolbar that you apparently use the COinS metadata feature. I don't, and don't plan to (but I don't know much about it or how it could be helpful to me, yet). I have a question regarding how data is entered in template parameters: If multiple authors are in one parameter, can the information still be extracted for use in COinS? I'm currently using lastn=| and firstn=|, since I feel that is the easiest way to make sure the right data winds up in the right field; however, it would be much easier to bung them all into one parameter, using commas to separate last names from first names and semicolons to separate authors. For example, if |authors=Smith, John; Johnson, Joe; Green, Ethan| were entered, would it create problems? What happens, for example, if |authors=John Smith, Joe Johnson, Ethan Green| is entered? Would that work? If not, would it work if the commas were semicolons? How does COinS extract data from |author=John Smith? What about an author with a suffix? (John Smith, Jr., for example.) If you'd just like to point me to a tutorial somewhere, that would be fine, too—I've been unable to find one! (Perhaps one could be created here on Wikipedia?) Washington, DC meetups in June

Greetings!

Wikimedia DC has yet another busy month in June. Whether you're a newcomer to Wikipedia or have years of experience, we're happy to see you come. Here's what's coming up:

  • On Wednesday, June 11 from 7 to 9 PM come to the WikiSalon at the Cove co-working space. Hang out with Wikipedia enthusiasts!
  • Saturday, June 14 is the Frederick County History Edit-a-Thon from 11 AM to 4 PM. Help improve local history on Wikipedia.
  • The following Saturday, June 21, is the June Meetup. Dinner and drinks with Wikipedians!
  • Come on Tuesday, June 24 for the Wikipedia in Your Library edit-a-thon at GWU on local and LGBT history.
  • Last but not least, on Sunday, June 29 we have the Phillips Collection Edit-a-Thon in honor of the Made in America exhibit.

The Great American Wiknic and other events in July

I am pleased to announce our fourth annual picnic, the Great American Wiknic, will take place at Meridian Hill Park in Washington, D.C. on Sunday, July 13 from 1 to 5 PM (rain date: July 20). We will be hanging out by the statue of Dante Alighieri, a statue that was donated to the park in 1921 as a tribute to Italian Americans. Read more about the statue on Wikipedia. July will also feature the second annual Great American Wiknic in Frederick, Maryland. This year’s Frederick picnic will take place on Sunday, July 6 at Baker Park. Sign up here for the Frederick picnic.

Wikimedia DC invites revolutionaries, free thinkers, and other sundry editors to a DC WikiSalon

The WikiSalon is a special meetup usually held during the first and third full weeks of every month, from 7 PM to 9 PM. It's an informal gathering of Wikimedia enthusiasts, who come together to discuss Wikimedia wikis and collaboratively edit. There's no set agenda, and guests are welcome to recommend articles for the group to edit or edit on their own.

If you're coming by Metro, the closest station is Dupont Circle (on the Red Line). If you're driving, a lot of parking opens up downtown after 6:30 PM, so finding a parking space (even a free one) should be easy. Once you've found the building, go to Cove on the second floor. We will be in the conference room.

Hi, i see you just reverted my addition to Girl Scouts of America, in this reversion edit. I don't mind. However you mention the link i added should be added to some navbox instead. Well, the list-article probably should not be linked from every Scouting article. It is not that important; indeed, the list-article itself is up for AFD as you know. It is more appropriate to link to it from a few articles, e.g. from the BSA one and the GSA one. Could you please implement or suggest some other articles where it could be linked from? Hmm, i haven't checked at the AFD...i wonder if you are against having the list-article of local Scouting units... It would be a bit frustrating if you are going to restore the orphan tag to the list-article, after removing the links to the article so that it is an orphan again, and contribute to the AFD deleting it because it has the negative tag, because you are waiting for the AFD to close before you allow there to be links to it....  :( I'd appreciate if you could positively help more clearly. :) I just am not familiar with this area, though, so whatever. cheers, --doncram 22:34, 21 September 2014 (UTC)

Named ref tags syntax

Hello, I tried to let this go, but I failed. I'm going to continue it here, with the one of the two parties for whom I have some respect. Basically, it's like this:

  • I made multiple arguments for the doc changes, and didn't get a response to any of them. That's WP:IJDLI in my book.
  • I volunteered to do the actual work; all I asked of others was to get out of the way. It seems to me that places the burden on others to say why the change shouldn't be made. I don't think "pointless" cuts it.

Thanks for the additional feedback at FGM. Could you have a look at the {{Paragraph break}} template? I don't know if that's the best name for it, but I think you can get a feeling for it's purpose by checking the transclusions. Remaining media with duplicate parameters

Hi, I noticed that using some duplicate parameters is apparently the why {{Non-free use rationale logo}} is currently designed to be used. It calls them "override fields". That template may need to be changed to prevent people from doing that. Jason Quinn (talk) 03:08, 25 October 2014 (UTC)

I think you misunderstand. Override fields refer to fields with a default value that can be overridden. Duplicate parameters are an issue where the same parameters is used twice in a template; the first use will be ignored and only the last use is parsed. Look at my edits to File:NickUdall.jpg. The |Article= was used twice, apparently in the thought that it would create two uses. Here, I had to duplicate the entire template with different values in |Article=.
And I see a lot of uses of the override fields where someone copies the default value into the field; but that is a different issue. --  Gadget850 talk 10:17, 25 October 2014 (UTC)

I don't disagree with your PROD of the article on Tamara Gervasoni. I only have a trivial comment. You mentioned that the winners of the contest could be listified. They are, at Rose of Tralee (festival). Most of them are just listed by name. A few are blue-linked, but not many. When the article in question is deleted in six days, her name will become a red link. So you comment that the winners could be listified is correct. The border= attribute in tables

Hi, in Help:Table, I see that you and Codename Lisa have been removing the border="1" attribute from tables on the grounds that it is obsolete - whilst the attribute in general is obsolete in HTML5, the spec allows the specific value border="1" as an exception. --Redrose64 (talk) 23:55, 10 November 2014 (UTC)

Hello, Redrose64. Actually, I put them back. I removed some from the table quick reference (another page) because it had given the exact wrong reason for it. Otherwise, I am under no illusion about HTML compliance of Wikipedia: When it comes to W3C Validator, every Wikipedia page generates thousands of errors and warnings. Centring 'listen' modules

Regarding edits like this (keep up the good work, BTW); please could you suggest (or implement) a method of replacing the center tags in:

There are three instances of <center>. One outside to center the entire template and two inside to center the text.

Hey there, people do nest big tags more than once, even technical people... That's obviously not the only time I've seen it while going through and trying to update as many pages as I can to use HTML5. So, you made changes to the centering code on several thousand articles. but I don't think you checked them to see if your changes worked, because a spot check showed that the code didn't work for a bunch of them. Since we all are are responsible for our edits, I think it is incumbent on you to make sure that your edits left the article in the same or better condition than how you found them. Thanks. I only reverted the changes to those pages on my watchlist for which the change hadn't worked. You've still got at least a 75% success rate, so I don't know if a full scale reversion is necessary - just pick out some of the pages which didn't work and go from there. Agreed. I was checking my watchlist and Special:RelatedChanges and saw some of these edits, and I didn't see any errors on these pages. Please don't universally undo all of these changes; a lot of them don't have errors.
