Thank you for your participation in the March 2011 GAN backlog elimination drive

On behalf of User:Wizardman and myself, we would like to take the time and thank you for your contributions made as part of the March 2011 Good articles backlog elimination drive. Awards and barnstars will go out shortly for those who have reviewed a certain number of articles.

During the backlog drive, in the month of March 2011,

• 522 GA nominations were undertaken.
• 423 GA nominations passed.
• 72 GA nominations failed.
• 27 GA nominations were on hold.

We started the GA backlog elimination drive with 378 GA nominations remaining, with 291 that were not reviewed at all. By 2:00, April 1, 2011, the backlog was at 171 GA nominations, with 100 that were left unreviewed.

At the start of the drive, the oldest unreviewed GA nomination was 101 days (Andrei Kirilenko (politician), at 20 November 2010, reviewed and passed 1 March 2011); at the end of the drive the oldest unreviewed GA nomination was 39 days (Gery Chico, at 24 February 2011, still yet to be reviewed as of this posting).

While we did not achieve the objective of getting the backlog of outstanding GA nominations down to below 50, we reduced the GA backlog by over half. The GA reviews also seemed to be of a higher quality and have consistently led, to say the least, to marginal improvements to those articles (although there were significant improvements to many, even on the some of the nominations that were failed).

Another GA backlog elimination drive is being planned for later this year, tentatively for September or October 2011. A bit more on Herbie Hewett

I got hold of a useful little book last week, Benny Green's History of Cricket. It's very gossipy and full of scandals and stories. It has about 3 pages on Hewett and puts him in a bit of context, and is quite useful. I could add some, but I think you have a fuller picture of the man than I do. If you email me, I can send you scans of the pages to see what you think. Of course, if you already have the book, I'll retreat gracefully. And, is this the year? I just came across James Parfitt at dyk - no issues with that. I must commend you on finding info on a 19th century first class player. Nothing that I can find, I'm afraid. I'll keep an eye out, but nothing in the obvious places. Meanwhile, didn't we both have a fantastic result yesterday (!). I've sometimes touched hockey reviews. I had a quick look and seems good. Two things I noticed: lots of sentences beginning "he" in the lead, and possibly too many quotes for my taste. But otherwise OK. I might chip in after some hockey people have had a look, as I think it needs hockey eyes first, as you say. And I'll certainly have a look when it goes to GA/FAC. On a related topic, I think Mr Bastard would be fine for GA at the moment, as I've had GAs with less detail. At four solid paragraphs, I like that section much better. What I'm thinking of -- and that was what I somewhat mentioned on the talkpage -- is to bring out the actual incidents in the playing style. However, I don't want to repeat the other sections. My motivation is that any short piece on Hextall would bring out a few of the actual incidents, and furthermore, discussing them might bring more context to the section. In an "ideal" world, I'm envisioning being able to (separately) section the playing style section. But, I'm not really sure how to do it and I'm still thinking it over. To cut to the point, feel free to nominate it for GA, because I need more time to think over how to tinker with the article, and it's not a when but an if I find something that looks like it could work. Hi, sorry I could not reply you promptly, I had urgent matters that demand my full attention away from Wikipedia. From what I read and a quick search, I have to give you bad news. It is unlikely you would find any images that have lapsed in copyright for this hockey goalie who was active (and gained his reputation) from the early 80s. You would only likely get a "free" picture if the author is willing to release it into the public domain or to license it in a suitable manner. Any copyrighted photograph (which is not accompanied with an appropriate CC license) intended to be used under the WP:NFCC criteria would have to convey something that is significantly commented in the article and would require illustration (e.g. a significant dramatic moment which is commented on, or a striking pose which is analyzed). That said, you can try asking the authors of http://www.flickr.com/photos/74194831@N00/2120976691/ and http://www.flickr.com/photos/creasekeeper28/2247907403/ if they are willing to change the licensing of their images on flickr to CC-2.0 or CC-BY-SA-2.0. Do explain the consequences of the changes to them (i.e. people would be able to use the images for any purpose, including commercial). There is also http://www.flickr.com/photos/stksave27/3030741035/, http://www.flickr.com/photos/stksave27/3031580060/, and http://www.flickr.com/photos/stksave27/3031580060/. However, do note that these three images are not taken by the uploader, but his or her friend Audrey; so it is her permission that is required, not the uploader. Hello Harrias, I've asked this same question to another Englishman, but wasn't kind of satisfying; would you please tell me what is the national sport of England (de-facto or de-juro)?. The problem is that we've an list-class article — National Sport, where some users have disputes over this subject, few weeks back it was cricket, now because of some football fan it's football, but without any source to prove the claim. But his assertion on the talk page of the article was quite convincing. I've reviewed the 1979 Gillette final for GA. It's on hold, but nothing major. Although I ought to fail it outright for being about Somerset. But it looks like Sussex are about to thrash us as well. Jake Seamer

Thanks. You've done a terrific job in expanding him so much. I just joined my local library which gives internet access to back copies of The Times, and there are quite a few gaps that it'll help to fill in all over the place. In the 1930s, hockey got almost as much coverage in the paper as cricket, so Seamer cropped up a few times. My next proper project, after I've tidied off my latest batch of lesser Somerset lights, has to be Micky Walford, who played hockey alongside Seamer at Oxford and whose Wikipedia article barely mentions cricket. The last few are proving very interesting, in fact: I think I've found Walter Tate's death, and I'm reasonably confident that H. E. Winter can be nailed down too. Quite a lot of the Somerset players I did early on (I've been around for nearly six years) I didn't reference properly (or very well), and I get very bored doing Infoboxes, so there are quite a few of those still to do. Calaway Park GA review

Hello: I recently discovered that you did the GA review for Calaway Park. In it, you suggest the list of rides should be turned into descriptive prose. I'm a little conflicted on that suggestion, as Calaway has no themed zones, no zones at all, and seems to have lots of little attractions, rather than a few major attractions, and thus nothing really to say but the physical, mechanical description of the ride. Bullet points allow skimming much easier, in my opinion. Are you sure prose would be preferred? What if I created a chart? -- Zanimum (talk) 14:33, 19 July 2011 (UTC)
