Ooops, I just saw the notice that you will be going out to sea tomorrow and will be gone for 99 days. Good luck on your voyage! In light of that I am sure this is now somewhat less important, but I just finished adding the "Meaning of name" column as you had suggested in Wikipedia:Featured list candidates/Navigational stars and was wondering:

Thanks, and good luck again! May you encounter fair weather and calm seas. Alexander Falk (talk) 15:54, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

Hi Alexander. I think I'll be able to upload the SVG version of the northern stars this afternoon— at this point, I'm just double checking everything. I was thinking about encouraging you to get a copy of GIMP Inkscape to complete the southern stars. As far as changing from comments to support— I'd like to, but since I have some "skin in the game," I have to be particularly careful about conflict of interest in this case. If I can see my way clear to a solid support, I'll do so.
Cheers. HausTalk 16:04, 16 May 2008 (UTC)
OK, I can do the southern stars. I've just downloaded and installed Inkscape. Question on the process: did you scan the page from Bowditch, or did you take it from the [version]? Also, did you try to automatically generate the vectorized charts, or did you manually draw over the scanned version and only used that as a guide? I just want to make sure that I use the same approach, so that the output looks comparable. Alexander Falk (talk) 16:19, 16 May 2008 (UTC)
Basically #2: selected the image in acrobat, copied it to the clipboard, saved it to a file, and brought the file into inkscape using "File->Import". I'm pretty sure you'll be able to use the grid, legend, icons and so forth from the northern stars as a big start on the southern stars. More in a bit. HausTalk 16:32, 16 May 2008 (UTC)
OK -- a copy of the diagram should be floating above and to the right. Have fun with it, and I should be in and out until about midnight your time. HausTalk 17:16, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

Floating Pneumatic Fender - Yokohama Fenders

A Yokohama Fender

What do you know about fenders? It seems there is no article on them? Thank you for your time. Manic mechanic (talk) 13:33, 27 August 2008 (UTC)

Yokohama is a genericized trademark (like Kleenex or Coke) referring specifically to big fenders made by the Yokohama Rubber Company and generically to others that look like them. I added a picture to the right. The terminology "Floating Pneumatic" isn't familiar to me, but it seems to indicate that they're full of air and float, which are familiar traits... Cheers. Unfree labor / Slavery

I watched with curiosity the anonymous edit and then your revision of Shanghaiing. While I agree "slavery" may be misleading, he has a point. Or does he? I was surprised you didn't explain your revision. Care to? Cbaer (talk) 00:34, 28 October 2008 (UTC)

Sure... "Unfree labour is a generic or collective term for those work relations, especially in modern or early modern history, in which people are employed against their will by the threat of destitution, detention, violence (including death)..." which is to say that it's not a euphemism, as the other editor claimed, but rather a technical term.... Cheers. HausTalk 01:07, 28 October 2008 (UTC)
Fair enough! Thanks! Cbaer (talk) 09:33, 28 October 2008 (UTC)

Propeller developed area

I have an article, SS Mauna Loa at FAC now (link) and a question came up that I thought you might be able to answer. In the article I quoted a source that gave a figure for the developed area of the ship's propeller, and a reviewer at FAC wondered what "developed area" means. I think from Googling that it's the actual surface area of the propeller (as opposed to the projected area). Do you know if that's correct? Propeller kind of hints at, but doesn't explain, what developed area means. Do you think this is a term that should have its own article, or is there another place I might link the term to? Many thanks in advance. — Bellhalla (talk) 22:58, 16 November 2008 (UTC)

No problem - propellers are a terminological minefield: using common sense to deduce what something means usually leads to tears. That said, you did guess right: developed area Ad is "defined as the area of all blades together." The reference is pages 174-175,179 of Eliasson, Rolf E.; Larsson, Lars Hannes (2000). AWB

Hey, just a heads-up, this is an inappropriate use of AWB according to WP:AWB#Rules of use and the edit summary is misleading. If you want to fix typos using AWB you should consider implementing WP:TSN. Thanks. --Closedmouth (talk) 07:26, 25 November 2008 (UTC)

Warship template replacements

Hello. Saw that you were helping replace {{warship}} with {{ship}} via AWB. Thanks! Unfortunately "blind" replacements like this are only going to make more work for us in the long run, as the link in question should be moved to {{HMCS}} instead of {{ship}}. Thanks, --Kralizec! (talk) 02:17, 1 December 2008 (UTC)

I appreciate your point, and pondered it for a while before moving ahead. I think there's an intermediate step needed in that progression: namely, rewriting {{HMCS}} to call {{ship}}. The reasoning is to ensure that there aren't any strange, hard to notice differences in the parameter uses. After that's done, we can get a list of all the pages that have {{ship|HMCS... by having ship include a null template if parameter1 is HMCS. The advantage of this approach is that it will pick up all occurences of {{ship|HMCS. Of course, the same sort of approach can be used with other special cases... (added : c.f. Help:Template#Monitoring_parameter_usage)
So, in a nutshell, it is, as you say, more work. However, hopefully you'll agree that there's method to my madness. Cheers. HausTalk 02:30, 1 December 2008 (UTC)
But why make more work for ourselves in the future, when we can fix it now (and only have to touch the article once)? --Kralizec! (talk) 02:39, 1 December 2008 (UTC)
I'm not sure we're on the same page... Do you have an alternative plan that picks up all cases where {{ship|HMCS... are converted to {{HMCS|...? I agree that it will cause another 50-ish pages to be touched twice rather than once. On the other hand, I'm not in a position tonight to rewrite {{HMCS}} with {{ship}} as a backend, which is (more or less) a necessary intermediate step before safely replacing ship with HMCS... Cheers. HausTalk 02:55, 1 December 2008 (UTC)
Looks like Bellhalla (talk · contribs) took care of the template re-write [1]. Thanks, Kralizec! (talk) 15:35, 1 December 2008 (UTC)

(outdent) Ok, so to generate the list of pages that use {{ship|HMCS|...., we'd simply have to change the line

-->]]</includeonly><noinclude>

to read

-->]]{{#ifeq:{{{1}}}|HMCS|{{voidd|{{WP Ships hmcs fixes}}}}}}</includeonly><noinclude>

and then build a list off of Links to hmcs fixes. HausTalk 17:01, 1 December 2008 (UTC)

Looking for old infoboxes

Howdy - I want to use AWB to find ship articles that are not using the new infobox. This should be easy by using AWB to find ships articles that don't include {{Infobox Ship but my dilemma is how to mark the talk page with the {{newinfobox|type=ship}} template after finding the appropriate article. This is probably a simple thing to do but I'm not seeing how to execute this in the AWB interface. --Brad (talk) 00:54, 7 December 2008 (UTC)

Happy to help. Try this:
  1. Make your list of ship articles
  2. Move your mouse into the box where the articles are listed
  3. Right-click and choose "Sort alphabetically"
  4. Right-click and choose "Remove->non-mainspace"
  5. Right-click and choose "Remove->duplicates"
  6. Right-click and choose "Convert to talk pages"
You can use the "Tools->List comparer" then to make a list of pages that don't have {{newinfobox. If there are a ton of pages, we could come up with a search/replace to actually put the {{newinfobox on the page. This page would be a good spot to start building your list. Lemme know if you have any problems. Cheers. HausTalk 01:05, 7 December 2008 (UTC)

Hmmm.. let me be more specific. I want to find articles that are not using {|{{Infobox Ship Begin}} and do not have the {{newinfobox|type=ship}} on the talk page. I'm thinking that AWB will scan articles and alert to any article that does not contain {|{{Infobox Ship Begin}} on its main page. Then gathering a list of those pages without the correct infobox, I will then scan the talk pages to make sure that {{newinfobox|type=ship}} is in place. Hope that makes more sense. --Brad (talk) 02:18, 7 December 2008 (UTC)

OK, there's an easy way and a hard way. The easy way is to go to the "Make list" box, choose the "Make from" option "Links from Page" and set the page to User:Haus/cong.
Here's a walkthrough of the hard way: first open list comparer. In list1, put "What Transcludes Page" and "Template:WikiProject Ships". Right-click and choose "Convert from talk pages". In list2, put "What Transcludes Page" and "Template:Infobox Ship Begin". Hit compare. The items in "Unique in List 1" will be all ships articles that don't have infoboxes. Click save list, and name it L1.
Click "Clear all" and then "Remove all" in List1 and List2. In list1, chose make from "Text File" and choose the file L1 you just made. Right-click and pick "Convert to talk pages". In list2 put "What Transcludes Page" and "Template:Newinfobox". Click compare. Now the items in "Unique in list 1" will be ship articles that don't have "Template:Infobox Ship Begin" and their talk pages don't have "Template:Newinfobox". Save this list as L2. Close List comparer. In the "Make list" box, go to the "Make from" selector and choose "Text file". Click "Make list" and choose the new L2 text file. Right-click and choose "Convert from talk pages". Now right-click and "Remove non main-space".
Does that work? Cheers HausTalk 03:02, 7 December 2008 (UTC)
Update: I noticed that about 3,000 of those articles had the {{shipindex}} template and that those articles shouldn't have infoboxes. I removed those and updated the list at User:Haus/cong. It now has about 5,800 links. Cheers. HausTalk 03:20, 7 December 2008 (UTC)
Errr yeah. That should keep me busy for a few days. I'll start on it soon; thanks. --Brad (talk) 06:35, 7 December 2008 (UTC)

Captain

You've done a great job with the Captain disambiguation project; thanks very much! I hate to quibble after you've made such a big contribution. However, just a minor suggestion -- if a link needs to be disambiguated and is marked by {{dn}}, you shouldn't change the link to Captain (disambiguation). That should only be used for links that are intended (permanently) to link to the disambiguation page; examples being other uses links and links about word usage. Anyway, as I said, this is a minor point and thanks again for taking the laboring oar (so to speak) on this task. --Russ (talk) 14:48, 7 December 2008 (UTC)

That's a good point, and I think you're right. My intent was to put links that can't reasonably be dabbed into a special bucket. For example, "Sven was born to Captain Rolf and Gretta Jones" with no citation, external link, or further discussion. You'd certainly want to add the {{dn}} to draw attention to the fact that it needs dabbed. I guess the point of changing the link to [[Captain (disambiguation)|] was to then "get it off the to-do list." Hmm, now I'm scratching my head — what do you do in this situation? Cheers. HausTalk 16:09, 7 December 2008 (UTC)
If the link needs to be disambiguated, but the information needed to do it isn't available, then I would just leave it as an {{dn}} in hopes that another editor who has access to secondary sources will fix it. And I consider it off my "to-do" list in that case. --Russ (talk) 03:02, 8 December 2008 (UTC)

Boxing the compass question

As a mariner, and all around smart guy, I thought you could answer a question about a compass direction for me. I have a source that says a ship was torpedoed "140 miles N.W. ½ W. of Tory Island". What does the "N.W. ½ W." translate to? Is it west-northwest? Thanks in advance. — Bellhalla (talk) 20:51, 12 December 2008 (UTC)

It's not a shorthand form currently common in the U.S. merchant fleet or Navy. That said, I'd guess that it's the same as NWxW which is "northwest by west" (start at NW which is 315 and go one point to the west) or 303.75°. West-northwest is another point to the west, or 292.5°. I have a couple of references from the 19th century and/or U.K. and will look to see if they use this form. Cheers. HausTalk 21:19, 12 December 2008 (UTC)
Well, consulting the internet and my books didn't tell me anything other than the fact that the "1/2" notation was in fact used. It seems likely to me that it's a British-style notation, so I forwarded the question to User:Shem1805. I think if we end up getting an answer it will be from someone who reads a lot of old RN/MN material. Cheers. HausTalk 23:11, 12 December 2008 (UTC)
I took a look through Google books and found the answer in a 1918 textbook. To get the angle, take northwest (315°T) then go 1/2 a point (5.625°) to the west to give 309.375°T. Here's the reference, and thanks for the stimulating question! HausTalk 18:01, 13 December 2008 (UTC)
I wish I'd checked my messages a little earlier; I could have saved you the effort. Haus is absolutely right - and it's pronounced "Northwest by a half West". It's pretty archaic, but then I'm getting that way myself. I don't imagine anybody has used such a phrase in earnest at sea for thirty years or more. See Boxing the compass for a more general description. If you're thinking of changing the text, I would bear in mind that the original may well have been a magnetic bearing, and that over-accuracy would not be appropriate. Yours, Shem (talk) 23:04, 13 December 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the input Shem! Knowing the pronunciation will allow me to insert this little gem into the midnight trivia game and hopefully stump the skipper. At the very least, I'm sure he'll have to scratch his head and grimace a little. Cheers. HausTalk 14:22, 14 December 2008 (UTC)
Thanks to both of you for the bit of trivial knowledge. :) I left the direction out of SM U-70 and just said that the ship was torpedoed 140 miles from Tory Island. — Bellhalla (talk) 20:10, 15 December 2008 (UTC)

Realms of Despair's 15th Anniversary Reunion

Hi Haus :)

As I mentioned to you last year, this year will be the 15th anniversary of the Realms of Despair, and thus we will be having a very special reunion. I'm hoping that you will be able to attend (it will be the August long weekend -- first weekend of August). I'd also like to be able to interview you if possible. Thanks :) --Thoric (talk) 23:19, 28 January 2009 (UTC)

I'll leave the heavy thinking up to you and the big kids. Cheers. HausTalk 23:48, 8 February 2009 (UTC)

ta very - it was a matter of knowing when to stop - ClemMcGann (talk) 11:28, 21 August 2009 (UTC)
O.K., I gave her some tweaks. Its an informative and clear article. If you intended to garden it up to good article status, I'd have some suggestions. First off, the lead section still doesn't quite comply with the best practices. There's some cleanup on the references that could be done, for example turning [http://whatever.com] into {{Cite web...}. The last big thing that caught my eye is the "Events" section. Ideally, this should be prose, maybe with an abbreviated overview on the side like the one in Éamon de Valera. A ton of work, I know, but it's a target to shoot for. That said, maybe we could get a disinterested party (one that doesn't bleed Guiness) to give her a peek - it's in the vicinity of being a B-class article. Cheers. HausTalk 04:25, 22 August 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for your thoughts and edits. I'm fixing the cites. I take your point about the "events", but am uncertain of a solution. Perhaps they should be in a separate "timeline" article? They painted the tricolor on their sides and deck (as can be seen in the pictures) - for now I'll restore that even though the lead might not be the best location. Actually (this is just a curiosity) one sailed one voyage not under the tricolor, but under the fenian flag (gold harp in green field)! it was a Panamanian purchased in the US - Local dignitaries were assembled to see her off and presented the flag, the Irish captain realized the error, rather than embarrass his hosts the flag was raised and so she sailed. I'll do some thinking and tweaking. Thanks - ClemMcGann (talk) 16:28, 22 August 2009 (UTC)
Gray made a point of *not* being an ambassador but a minister, he regarded Ireland to be a British dominion rather than an independent country
thanks for your assistance ClemMcGann (talk) 01:17, 24 August 2009 (UTC)
Glad to pitch in, it's an interesting article! FWIW, to American eyes "American minister" reads as "American parson" which is why I diddled with that bit. Perhaps a couple of words of context could make it clearer?
Observing the effort you're putting into the article, I keep thinking about how it would do as a good article candidate. As it stands, it would get shot down for some layout issues, the big list, a few places where citations are needed and some citation formatting. Personally, I find the process pretty annoying, but the outcome rewarding. If you're interested in going down this path, let me know, and I can help get it ready. Cheers. HausTalk 01:40, 24 August 2009 (UTC)
Advice appreciated. Gray had a longer minister-extraordinary-type title - I will look it up. If the big list is a problem, let's move it to a separate timeline article. (if in doubt - cut it out) Although I don't want that list lost. I'm addressing the cite formatting - and the timeline formatting. Where do you reckon that more cites are required? - add some [citation needed] tags - I probably have the books - thanks - ClemMcGann (talk) 08:50, 24 August 2009 (UTC)
I will be away for a few days. I have been rechecking the refs. What more is required? If the 'events' are a problem, then I'm inclined to delete. thanks and regards - ClemMcGann (talk) 02:18, 2 September 2009 (UTC)

Tank ship

Dear Haus,

there is a little debate (Talk:Tank_ship#Requested_move), triggered I guess by a link appearing on the front page, on the Tank ship page - about renaming it Tanker (ship). A move which seems sensible to me. Do you have a view? Best wishes (Msrasnw (talk) 16:01, 7 May 2010 (UTC))

Code Help

Hi Haus, Thanks for the help already received. I used the code to create the current incarnation of {{P&O ships}}. However this is coming out to be quite heavy on user input. I've been trying to play around and get it so that instead of having to specify which sections to hide, so that it's which sections to display. However my limited knowledge is failing again as I want to get it to default to all hidden if a parameter is used, but if no parameters are used then it defaults to display the whole lot. Would be grateful if you could help out. I have a test page setup on Sandbox and Test - JonEastham (talk) 11:50, 17 June 2010 (UTC)

Ok, I'll start playing with this as soon as the morning coffee kicks in. HausTalk 16:56, 17 June 2010 (UTC)
Ok, give it a close look - I think that did it. Cheers. HausTalk 17:16, 17 June 2010 (UTC)

MV_Maersk_Alabama Reference Deletion

In the article on [[MV_Maersk_Alabama] you deleted a reference using WP:ELNO as justification. Quoting from WP:ELNO:"The subject of this guideline is external links that are not citations to sources supporting article content." I sincerely hope all the other deletions you have made regarding this site are actually external links and not citations or references. Darrell_Greenwood (talk) 19:38, 17 June 2010 (UTC)

Citations are required to comply with WP:RS, and in this case guidelines on self-published sources, from which "...personal websites, open wikis, blogs, personal pages on social networking sites, Internet forum postings, or tweets—are largely not acceptable... 'Blogs' in this context refers to personal and group blogs." HausTalk 19:52, 17 June 2010 (UTC)

GA Articles

I responded to your request on the NPOV talk page for controversial GA and above articles. I'll repeat it here just in case you aren't watching the page.

I guess it depends on how controversial you want. Islam, Atheism, Evolution, Objections to evolution, Holocaust denial, Conservapedia and Global warming come to mind.

Good luck. Jess talk cs 23:10, 26 June 2010 (UTC)

(Responding both places) Thanks for the tips, Jess, I'll definitely look at these articles for ideas. It might be useful to mention articles like this on the NPOV page as guidance for editors. Cheers. HausTalk 00:10, 27 June 2010 (UTC)

Reviewer permission

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a two-month trial scheduled to end 15 August 2010.

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.

For the guideline on reviewing, see Wikipedia:Reviewing. Being granted reviewer rights doesn't change how you can edit articles even with pending changes. The general help page on pending changes can be found here, and the general policy for the trial can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 06:55, 29 June 2010 (UTC)

Re your post at WT:SHIPS

I'm not sure what you are proposing here, please clarify. Mjroots (talk) 09:02, 30 June 2010 (UTC)

I think it got hashed out: using # and * lists in infobox fields. My first pass apparently wasn't clear: html-wise <br> doesn't make a list, it makes a linebreak. After wikistuff happens # is converted to <olist><li>...</olist> and * is converted to <list><li>...</list>, which is what I was talking about in (a). Anyway, looks like it is clearer now. HausTalk 09:49, 30 June 2010 (UTC)

Pride of Rotterdam

I've expanded the article now, let me know if you think it is ready to go live and I'll do the necessary. Mjroots (talk) 10:16, 6 July 2010 (UTC)

Looks dandy to me, good work! Tangential question: I see you used vesseltracker.com, and I've been pondering whether it is a WP:RS for a good article candidate. I've tried to convince myself that it is and failed. Do you have any feelings on the subject? Thanks. HausTalk 10:20, 6 July 2010 (UTC)
P.S. I just glanced at WP:WIADYK and I think the new article qualifies as a dyk. HausTalk 10:29, 6 July 2010 (UTC)
Vesseltracker is as reliable as any of the other sources available for the limited info it carries for unregistered viewers (IMO, MMSI, Callsign, flag. Measurements tend to be rounded). I can't speak for the rest of the info as I'm not registered and don't intend to. Fakta om Fartyg should be a first port of call, but that site doesn't list call signs. Re DYK, it will qualify as a new article once the copyvio has been deleted - the same happened with Charles Fryatt. Were you thinking on the lines of the new terminal having to be constructed to accommodate the ships? Mjroots (talk) 11:10, 6 July 2010 (UTC)
New MS Pride of Rotterdam article now live. Mjroots (talk) 11:20, 6 July 2010 (UTC)
Looks good. Regarding DYK, yes, I think the new terminal is the most interesting fact. HausTalk 12:40, 6 July 2010 (UTC)

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag - if no such tag exists then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hangon tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. As you are a new editor, you may be well served by reviewing Wikipedia:Don't_template_the_regulars. HausTalk 01:40, 9 July 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for the pointer. I read what I left you now, and it does seem awful, I do apologize. Even with my limited experience I might have found such text somewhat rude if it was left at my door. That's what I get for using TW without bothering to look carefully at what it left behind, which is bad practice anyway. Oddly, I templated at least 20 regulars the last month and none of them bothered to tell me what I do might be considered rude. I'm happy you did. --Muhandes (talk) 06:01, 9 July 2010 (UTC)
No harm done, and good catch on the template: {{cite simbad}} worked out better. Cheers. HausTalk 06:34, 9 July 2010 (UTC)

Blackpool shipwrecks

I'd prefer to keep this article (and other similar articles) at the current title. It is not presented in a list format but in prose. Mjroots (talk) 09:43, 12 July 2010 (UTC)

I don't have strong feelings on the matter, but having 16 one- and two-sentence sections does make it remarkable amongst our start-class articles. Cheers. HausTalk 09:50, 12 July 2010 (UTC)
I thought it should be a list article as well. It certainly "looks" like a list! Brad (talk) 17:27, 13 July 2010 (UTC)

B-class checklists.

Thanks for helping eliminate the huge backlog. I was working on them until I became nauseated and had to break. One thing I discovered while going through the list is that some articles needed demotion to stub while others weren't in the ships scope. I noticed you caught a couple non-scope articles which is good. The backlog was at one time just under 9,000 articles. Brad (talk) 17:32, 13 July 2010 (UTC)

My pleasure - I'm twiddling my thumbs waiting on a GA review. I think out of the 1,000 or so I've done in the past few days, most stayed at start, maybe 20-30% were promotions to C-Class, maybe 1% promoted to B-class, and 1 was a GA that fell through the cracks. I haven't caught any stubs yet, but as you can probably see, I punted on Blackpool shipwrecks and Ferries in Washington State. Cheers. HausTalk 18:08, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
Ferries in Washington State failed 4 out of 5 criteria so it can stay at start class. I'm not sure about the blackpool article. Maybe it could pass to a C but all of those sections might be a reason to fail criteria 3. Another issue I ran into doing checklists were articles that had been redirected leaving the banner behind on an orphaned talk page. In those cases you can either remove the banner or change it to |class=redirect. Brad (talk) 19:56, 13 July 2010 (UTC)

Regarding your assessments according to you the Leander class cruiser (1882) article has been checked against the following criteria for B-Class status. (Checklist commented out by H) I think you are in error. I think it meets criterion 2, but does not meet criterion 5.--Toddy1 (talk) 14:48, 17 July 2010 (UTC)

Agreed. I changed it accordingly. Cheers. HausTalk 15:07, 17 July 2010 (UTC)
I've been working ahead of you through the list; finding a lot of non-scope articles that really belong to sailing: {{WikiProject Sailing|class=|importance=}}. A year ago or more I got carried away with AWB and tagged a lot of these. Some ships project conversation was any civilian ship under 100' that sails should go to that project. America's cup boats etc. Brad (talk) 16:50, 17 July 2010 (UTC)
Good thinking. When I hit one with scope issues, it's like hitting a speed-bump. Keeping the two processes separate is a good idea: for example, I see I kept loblolly boy. HausTalk 16:57, 17 July 2010 (UTC)
Well, I can't match your speed though :). I believe that I've looked through M's and am continuing on but I'm on my way out for the day. If you're not sure about an article then I guess you could skip over it and I'll find it later. Brad (talk) 17:08, 17 July 2010 (UTC)

An issue I've discovered; not sure how this is happening. These two talk pages are tagged but there is no corresponding main article:

The other day I found three others like this and marked them for speedy delete {{db-talk}}. When you figure out what is going on can you mark those two for speedy delete?

Back to the subject of scope.. I attempted some time ago to gather a more solid scope from project ships members but there was so little response that nothing was was solved. I've basically been winging it since then. I've looked for non-scope articles through the letter P now. Will be doing more in the next hour or so. Brad (talk) 15:35, 18 July 2010 (UTC)

I spent last night fixing some problems in my method that can occur with special characters. That should be all fixed now, and I'll start evaluating again in earnest in the morning. On scope - I think we just wing it for the time being and wait for a better year to gain consensus on anything. Cheers. HausTalk 16:54, 18 July 2010 (UTC)
I've gone through the entirety of the list now. I completely skipped the U's because most of them will be USS xxx, ships certainly within scope. I removed something like 75-100 articles as non-scope. Brad (talk) 17:34, 19 July 2010 (UTC)

Upper case

Out of place—yes, I know. It's standard to use the upper case: I've been corrected before on this matter. I guess in the context it distinguishes the term from the generic. Tony (talk) 12:28, 14 July 2010 (UTC)

Can you possibly put on the article talk page a list of points that you think needed addressing which caused it to fail to reach a B class.

Why did you remove the {{Ship infobox request}} tag? Viriditas (talk) 03:08, 18 July 2010 (UTC)
The |needs-infobox=yes makes it redundant. With both, two banners requesting an infobox would be present. Cheers. HausTalk 03:51, 18 July 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for clearing up my confusion. Viriditas (talk) 06:14, 18 July 2010 (UTC)

There seems to be a problem here. Your recent edit summary said "B class" but for whatever reason its showing as "C class." I tried to correct it, but was unsuccessful. Thanks for taking the time. 7&6=thirteen (talk) 18:12, 19 July 2010 (UTC) Stan

Hi, and thanks for your input. It makes it clear to me that I should tweak the edit summary that I've been using. I'm assessing the articles against the B-class checklist. In my opinion, SS Daniel J. Morrell doesn't meet the B1 and B2 criteria, but does qualify as a C-class article, meeting the B3, B4, and B5 criteria. Maybe changing my edit summary to "Assessing B-class checklist for WP:SHIPS" would be less confusing? HausTalk 10:32, 20 July 2010 (UTC)
Haus, I don't know anything about the checklist. That's above my pay grade, so to speak. I was confused by the apparent discontinuity between the edit summary (happy) and the actual rating (disappointed). However, I am not questioning either of those, but merely wanted to give you -- the author -- a heads-up. Of course, part of this is a result of the reader's ignorance of the assessment process of ships' articles. Fortunately (or not) there aren't going to be many who would notice this historical anomaly. Happy editing and keep up the good work. 7&6=thirteen (talk) 11:41, 20 July 2010 (UTC) Stan

Don't understand that for the article Nordhavn you state that you rate it B-class "(B-class assessment for WP:SHIPS)" but then code for C-class --WikiProjectShips|class=C|B1=no|B2=no|B3=yes|B4=yes|B5=yes-- ThanksDavidPickett (talk) 17:49, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

After reading the previous Talk point (above) I think I also understand what you are saying about Nordhavn. But your edit comment do leave a different impression.DavidPickett (talk) 17:56, 20 July 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for you input. I've changed my default edit summary for these assessments to "assessing B-class checklist for WP:SHIPS" which will hopefully decrease the likelihood of this kind of misunderstanding. Cheers. HausTalk 10:50, 21 July 2010 (UTC)

c'mon, guy...i don't intend to be, or even like being adversarial...i really wish we could work together without being mean. --emerson7 03:47, 5 August 2010 (UTC)

I'm fine with the idea of moving the title closer to the beginning of the sentence. However, I'm not fine with the idea of butchering the definition in order to do so. For reference, here's the diff. Now, let's look at your current sentence:

  • A flag of convenience is a flag
    • No it isn't: it is a business practice, not a piece of cloth. You can't go to the bridge and pick up the "flag of convenience." You can pick up the civil ensign, however.
  • flown by a merchant ship
    • As a concept, rather than a physical object, it can't be flown. The "is said to be" in the original sentence is there because it's a rather fanciful expression.
  • if it is from
    • "From" is particularly vague here. Does it mean "built in?" Does it mean "owned by nationals of?" Does it mean it just sailed from there? The original version lacked this imprecision.
  • a registering country
    • "Registering country" is certainly not a term I've ever run into. On the other hand, the construct of a ship being "registered in a country" is widely used by the IMO, etc, etc, etc...
  • other than that of its owners, "for..."
    • What is the grammatical purpose of the comma? It isn't separating clauses. It isn't separating parenthetical information. There isn't a list anywhere in sight.

If you feel that we could develop a better first sentence, I'm willing to continue discussing it. However, I feel that in the meantime, the article should be reverted. HausTalk 05:37, 5 August 2010 (UTC)

I'm seeing some info that makes me think that the news reports are wrong, but I don't think I can untangle it in one sitting. HausTalk 20:55, 27 August 2010 (UTC) Probably true, but not from a RS: "Fergün Express III (built as the Venture 84 in 1982, from 1983 to 1998 she was Emeraude’s Trident/Trident III)" HausTalk 21:09, 27 August 2010 (UTC)
Note to self, or anybody interested in following up. The catamaran seats 250 passengers and has a service speed of 29 knots."[1] ...build name "Trident" soon renamed to "Trident 3".HausTalk 22:03, 27 August 2010 (UTC)
