Ooops, I just saw the notice that you will be going out to sea tomorrow and will be gone for 99 days. Good luck on your voyage! In light of that I am sure this is now somewhat less important, but I just finished adding the "Meaning of name" column as you had suggested in Wikipedia:Featured list candidates/Navigational stars and was wondering:

• if you still plan to upload the 2 star charts before you depart (or if you would want me to scan and upload them)
• if there are any more changes you think we should make to Navigational stars or whether you'd consider casing a Support vote on Wikipedia:Featured list candidates/Navigational stars if there are none

Hi Alexander. I think I'll be able to upload the SVG version of the northern stars this afternoon— at this point, I'm just double checking everything. I was thinking about encouraging you to get a copy of GIMP Inkscape to complete the southern stars. As far as changing from comments to support— I'd like to, but since I have some "skin in the game," I have to be particularly careful about conflict of interest in this case. If I can see my way clear to a solid support, I'll do so.

OK, I can do the southern stars. I've just downloaded and installed Inkscape. Question on the process: did you scan the page from Bowditch, or did you take it from the [version]? Also, did you try to automatically generate the vectorized charts, or did you manually draw over the scanned version and only used that as a guide? Basically #2: selected the image in acrobat, copied it to the clipboard, saved it to a file, and brought the file into inkscape using "File->Import". I'm pretty sure you'll be able to use the grid, legend, icons and so forth from the northern stars as a big start on the southern stars. More in a bit. Haus^Talk 16:32, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

Yokohama is a genericized trademark (like Kleenex or Coke) referring specifically to big fenders made by the Yokohama Rubber Company and generically to others that look like them. I added a picture to the right. The terminology "Floating Pneumatic" isn't familiar to me, but it seems to indicate that they're full of air and float, which are familiar traits... Cheers. "Unfree labour is a generic or collective term for those work relations, especially in modern or early modern history, in which people are employed against their will by the threat of destitution, detention, violence (including death)..." which is to say that it's not a euphemism, as the other editor claimed, but rather a technical term.... Propeller developed area

I have an article, SS Mauna Loa at FAC now (link) and a question came up that I thought you might be able to answer. In the article I quoted a source that gave a figure for the developed area of the ship's propeller, and a reviewer at FAC wondered what "developed area" means. I think from Googling that it's the actual surface area of the propeller (as opposed to the projected area). Do you know if that's correct? Propeller kind of hints at, but doesn't explain, what developed area means. Do you think this is a term that should have its own article, or is there another place I might link the term to? No problem - propellers are a terminological minefield: using common sense to deduce what something means usually leads to tears. That said, you did guess right: developed area A_d is "defined as the area of all blades together." The reference is pages 174-175,179 of Eliasson, Rolf E.; Larsson, Lars Hannes (2000). I appreciate your point, and pondered it for a while before moving ahead. I think there's an intermediate step needed in that progression: namely, rewriting {{HMCS}} to call {{ship}}. The reasoning is to ensure that there aren't any strange, hard to notice differences in the parameter uses. After that's done, we can get a list of all the pages that have {{ship|HMCS... by having ship include a null template if parameter1 is HMCS. The advantage of this approach is that it will pick up all occurences of {{ship|HMCS. Of course, the same sort of approach can be used with other special cases... (added : c.f. Help:Template#Monitoring_parameter_usage)

So, in a nutshell, it is, as you say, more work. However, hopefully you'll agree that there's method to my madness. Cheers. Haus^Talk 02:30, 1 December 2008 (UTC)

I'm not sure we're on the same page... Do you have an alternative plan that picks up all cases where {{ship|HMCS... are converted to {{HMCS|...? I agree that it will cause another 50-ish pages to be touched twice rather than once. On the other hand, I'm not in a position tonight to rewrite {{HMCS}} with {{ship}} as a backend, which is (more or less) a necessary intermediate step before safely replacing ship with HMCS... Looking for old infoboxes

Howdy - I want to use AWB to find ship articles that are not using the new infobox. This should be easy by using AWB to find ships articles that don't include {{Infobox Ship but my dilemma is how to mark the talk page with the {{newinfobox|type=ship}} template after finding the appropriate article. This is probably a simple thing to do but I'm not seeing how to execute this in the AWB interface. --Brad (talk) 00:54, 7 December 2008 (UTC)

Happy to help. Try this:

1. Make your list of ship articles
2. Move your mouse into the box where the articles are listed
3. Right-click and choose "Sort alphabetically"
4. Right-click and choose "Remove->non-mainspace"
5. Right-click and choose "Remove->duplicates"
6. Right-click and choose "Convert to talk pages"

You can use the "Tools->List comparer" then to make a list of pages that don't have {{newinfobox. If there are a ton of pages, we could come up with a search/replace to actually put the {{newinfobox on the page. This page would be a good spot to start building your list. Hmmm.. let me be more specific. I want to find articles that are not using {|{{Infobox Ship Begin}} and do not have the {{newinfobox|type=ship}} on the talk page. I'm thinking that AWB will scan articles and alert to any article that does not contain {|{{Infobox Ship Begin}} on its main page. Then gathering a list of those pages without the correct infobox, I will then scan the talk pages to make sure that {{newinfobox|type=ship}} is in place. OK, there's an easy way and a hard way. The easy way is to go to the "Make list" box, choose the "Make from" option "Links from Page" and set the page to User:Haus/cong.

Here's a walkthrough of the hard way: first open list comparer. In list1, put "What Transcludes Page" and "Template:WikiProject Ships". Right-click and choose "Convert from talk pages". In list2, put "What Transcludes Page" and "Template:Infobox Ship Begin". Hit compare. The items in "Unique in List 1" will be all ships articles that don't have infoboxes. Click save list, and name it L1.

Click "Clear all" and then "Remove all" in List1 and List2. In list1, chose make from "Text File" and choose the file L1 you just made. Right-click and pick "Convert to talk pages". In list2 put "What Transcludes Page" and "Template:Newinfobox". Click compare. Now the items in "Unique in list 1" will be ship articles that don't have "Template:Infobox Ship Begin" and their talk pages don't have "Template:Newinfobox". Save this list as L2. Close List comparer. In the "Make list" box, go to the "Make from" selector and choose "Text file". Click "Make list" and choose the new L2 text file. Right-click and choose "Convert from talk pages". Now right-click and "Remove non main-space".

You've done a great job with the Captain disambiguation project; thanks very much! I hate to quibble after you've made such a big contribution. However, just a minor suggestion -- if a link needs to be disambiguated and is marked by {{dn}}, you shouldn't change the link to Captain (disambiguation). That should only be used for links that are intended (permanently) to link to the disambiguation page; examples being other uses links and links about word usage. That's a good point, and I think you're right. My intent was to put links that can't reasonably be dabbed into a special bucket. For example, "Sven was born to Captain Rolf and Gretta Jones" with no citation, external link, or further discussion. You'd certainly want to add the {{dn}} to draw attention to the fact that it needs dabbed. I guess the point of changing the link to [[Captain (disambiguation)|] was to then "get it off the to-do list." Hmm, now I'm scratching my head — what do you do in this situation? Cheers. If the link needs to be disambiguated, but the information needed to do it isn't available, then I would just leave it as an {{dn}} in hopes that another editor who has access to secondary sources will fix it. Boxing the compass question

As a mariner, and all around smart guy, I thought you could answer a question about a compass direction for me. I have a source that says a ship was torpedoed "140 miles N.W. ½ W. of Tory Island". It's not a shorthand form currently common in the U.S. merchant fleet or Navy. That said, I'd guess that it's the same as NWxW which is "northwest by west" (start at NW which is 315 and go one point to the west) or 303.75°. West-northwest is another point to the west, or 292.5°. I have a couple of references from the 19th century and/or U.K. and will look to see if they use this form. Cheers. Well, consulting the internet and my books didn't tell me anything other than the fact that the "1/2" notation was in fact used. It seems likely to me that it's a British-style notation, so I forwarded the question to User:Shem1805. I wish I'd checked my messages a little earlier; I could have saved you the effort. Haus is absolutely right - and it's pronounced "Northwest by a half West". It's pretty archaic, but then I'm getting that way myself. I don't imagine anybody has used such a phrase in earnest at sea for thirty years or more. See Boxing the compass for a more general description. If you're thinking of changing the text, I would bear in mind that the original may well have been a magnetic bearing, and that over-accuracy would not be appropriate. This note left me kind of scratching my head, since I worked my may up from the bottom, picking articles that were ticked, only skipping ones that would throw off balance (i.e. too much U.S. stuff) or were being heatedly debated (i.e. Benson the Carp). O.K., I gave her some tweaks. Its an informative and clear article. If you intended to garden it up to good article status, I'd have some suggestions. First off, the lead section still doesn't quite comply with the best practices. There's some cleanup on the references that could be done, for example turning [http://whatever.com] into {{Cite web...}. The last big thing that caught my eye is the "Events" section. Ideally, this should be prose, maybe with an abbreviated overview on the side like the one in Éamon de Valera. A ton of work, I know, but it's a target to shoot for. That said, maybe we could get a disinterested party (one that doesn't bleed Guiness) to give her a peek - it's in the vicinity of being a B-class article. Cheers. Thanks for your thoughts and edits. I'm fixing the cites. I take your point about the "events", but am uncertain of a solution. Perhaps they should be in a separate "timeline" article? They painted the tricolor on their sides and deck (as can be seen in the pictures) - for now I'll restore that even though the lead might not be the best location. Actually (this is just a curiosity) one sailed one voyage not under the tricolor, but under the fenian flag (gold harp in green field)! it was a Panamanian purchased in the US - Local dignitaries were assembled to see her off and presented the flag, the Irish captain realized the error, rather than embarrass his hosts the flag was raised and so she sailed. Glad to pitch in, it's an interesting article! FWIW, to American eyes "American minister" reads as "American parson" which is why I diddled with that bit. Perhaps a couple of words of context could make it clearer?

Observing the effort you're putting into the article, I keep thinking about how it would do as a good article candidate. As it stands, it would get shot down for some layout issues, the big list, a few places where citations are needed and some citation formatting. Personally, I find the process pretty annoying, but the outcome rewarding. If you're interested in going down this path, let me know, and I can help get it ready. Cheers. Code Help

Hi Haus, Thanks for the help already received. I used the code to create the current incarnation of {{P&O ships}}. However this is coming out to be quite heavy on user input. I've been trying to play around and get it so that instead of having to specify which sections to hide, so that it's which sections to display. However my limited knowledge is failing again as I want to get it to default to all hidden if a parameter is used, but if no parameters are used then it defaults to display the whole lot. I think it got hashed out: using # and * lists in infobox fields. My first pass apparently wasn't clear: html-wise <br> doesn't make a list, it makes a linebreak. After wikistuff happens # is converted to <olist><li>...</olist> and * is converted to <list><li>...</list>, which is what I was talking about in (a). Anyway, looks like it is clearer now. Vesseltracker is as reliable as any of the other sources available for the limited info it carries for unregistered viewers (IMO, MMSI, Callsign, flag. Measurements tend to be rounded). I can't speak for the rest of the info as I'm not registered and don't intend to. Fakta om Fartyg should be a first port of call, but that site doesn't list call signs. Re DYK, it will qualify as a new article once the copyvio has been deleted - the same happened with Charles Fryatt. B-class checklists.

Thanks for helping eliminate the huge backlog. I was working on them until I became nauseated and had to break. One thing I discovered while going through the list is that some articles needed demotion to stub while others weren't in the ships scope. My pleasure - I'm twiddling my thumbs waiting on a GA review. I think out of the 1,000 or so I've done in the past few days, most stayed at start, maybe 20-30% were promotions to C-Class, maybe 1% promoted to B-class, and 1 was a GA that fell through the cracks. Ferries in Washington State failed 4 out of 5 criteria so it can stay at start class. I'm not sure about the blackpool article. Maybe it could pass to a C but all of those sections might be a reason to fail criteria 3. Another issue I ran into doing checklists were articles that had been redirected leaving the banner behind on an orphaned talk page. I've been working ahead of you through the list; finding a lot of non-scope articles that really belong to sailing: {{WikiProject Sailing|class=|importance=}}. A year ago or more I got carried away with AWB and tagged a lot of these. Some ships project conversation was any civilian ship under 100' that sails should go to that project. Back to the subject of scope.. I attempted some time ago to gather a more solid scope from project ships members but there was so little response that nothing was was solved. Hi, and thanks for your input. It makes it clear to me that I should tweak the edit summary that I've been using. I'm assessing the articles against the B-class checklist. In my opinion, SS Daniel J. Morrell doesn't meet the B1 and B2 criteria, but does qualify as a C-class article, meeting the B3, B4, and B5 criteria. Haus, I don't know anything about the checklist. That's above my pay grade, so to speak. I was confused by the apparent discontinuity between the edit summary (happy) and the actual rating (disappointed). I'm fine with the idea of moving the title closer to the beginning of the sentence. However, I'm not fine with the idea of butchering the definition in order to do so. For reference, here's the diff. Now, let's look at your current sentence:

• A flag of convenience is a flag
  • No it isn't: it is a business practice, not a piece of cloth. You can't go to the bridge and pick up the "flag of convenience." You can pick up the civil ensign, however.
• flown by a merchant ship
  • As a concept, rather than a physical object, it can't be flown. The "is said to be" in the original sentence is there because it's a rather fanciful expression.
• if it is from
  • "From" is particularly vague here. Does it mean "built in?" Does it mean "owned by nationals of?" Does it mean it just sailed from there? The original version lacked this imprecision.
• a registering country
  • "Registering country" is certainly not a term I've ever run into. On the other hand, the construct of a ship being "registered in a country" is widely used by the IMO, etc, etc, etc...
• other than that of its owners, "for..."
  • What is the grammatical purpose of the comma? It isn't separating clauses. It isn't separating parenthetical information. There isn't a list anywhere in sight.
