Disambiguation link notification for February 17[edit]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Whaling in Australia, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Albany (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Minor point: it's spelled "grammar" not "grammer"[edit]

Just a heads-up since you've been misspelling it in the Edit Summaries. No harm done, just thought you'd want to know. MatthewVanitas (talk) 10:14, 18 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Other national-level whaling articles we're lacking[edit]

No obligation, but if you're enjoying your current subject, you might consider later tackling some of the other countries for which we lack an article on whaling. MatthewVanitas (talk) 06:17, 30 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Congrats[edit]

Whaling in the United Kingdom is a solid achievement. I'll do what I can to improve it (have you come across wikignomes before?) because your work is a real contribution to the encyclopedia. Carbon Caryatid (talk) 14:27, 13 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Carbon. I am new to this and can use all the help I can get. Histragic (talk) 07:44, 19 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I look forward to collaborating with you! As you've said you welcome help, I've taken the liberty of tweaking your "thank you" so it indents neatly under my first message. It's a convention to help keep conversations together. I still forget wiki-etiquette sometimes - that redlink was a basic mistake - I should have linked to WikiGnome.
I have a couple of requests for you, given your evident knowledge and access to sources. Unfortunately Wikipedia:WikiProject Cetaceans seems dormant, so I'll ask you here, echoing MatthewVanitas above. In addition to the national articles that are missing, I see a gap in that we have no article on Whaling in the Arctic and Whaling in the Antarctic. (This time the redlinks are deliberate.) We have articles that touch on those subjects, e.g. Category:Whaling in Antarctica, but not one point to go to. If you'd consider creating those, especially the Arctic one, it would be a great contribution. Let me know if I can help with any questions you may have. Carbon Caryatid (talk) 13:14, 19 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hunting bowhead whales in Australia[edit]

Hello. I saw that you added Australian whalers hunted bowhead whales. This is a northern species. I'm assuming you're referring to Australian vessels that were sent to the Arctic to hunt them? I don't have access to the cited source so I'm not sure what it said exactly. OM2003 (talk) 21:29, 19 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Australian whalers joined the rush to exploit the newly discovered whaling grounds around Baring Strait in the 1850s. Not much has been published about their involvement there. There is, however, information available in contemporary newspapers, some of which have become available in recent times. (Histragic (talk) 00:39, 23 April 2018 (UTC))[reply]

Whaling[edit]

I am still tinkering with the entries on whaling in Australia and the United Kingdom and have plans to expand or create entries for some of the better known entrepreneurs in the industry. Once that is done I will take a look at whaling in the Antarctic and Arctic and consider what I could contribute.

Thanks for considering Whaling in the Arctic (and Antarctic). As for the entrepreneurs, that would indeed be interesting. Our Category:Whaling firms lacks a central article. I'd be curious whether the men who rowed the whale boats ever rose to captain the whale ships or finance the venture from a snug shoreside berth. Carbon Caryatid (talk) 21:19, 21 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It was not unusual for ordinary seamen on whaling vessels to work their way up to the rank of captain. And captains did sometimes become the principal owner of multiple vessels after retiring from the sea. Histragic (talk) 08:35, 22 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I'm indenting you again! (Do you see how the thread of conversation works?) Thanks for that response. I look forward to reading your improvements to the entrepreneurs. Let me know if you have any wiki-questions that the resources above don't cover. Carbon Caryatid (talk) 21:20, 22 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Carbon. I appreciate the support and imput. I did not realise Wikipedia had a social element. (Histragic (talk) 00:41, 23 April 2018 (UTC))[reply]
The social element forms a substantial part of Wikipedia for some editors, and a negligible one for others. You'll see from userpages how individuals choose to present themselves to other editors. (I'm a bad example, as I haven't changed my page in years.) WikiProjects coalesce around a group collaboration; WikiProject Cetaceans is quiet, but I posted a question the other day and got a response. When disagreements arise over what should or shouldn't be in an article, its talkpage is the place to go, where reasonable arguments should rule the day, and a little humour sometimes helps. In the physical world, some attend chapter meet-ups, and editathons, for example, depending on geography. I hope you find what you want within Wikipedia. Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute to Wikipedia, introducing inappropriate pages, such as Thomas Sturge, is not in accordance with our policies. If you would like to experiment, please use the sandbox. Under section G3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, the page has been nominated for deletion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. 198.84.253.202 (talk) 03:23, 26 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I cant find any button to contest such a nomination. Also I dont understand the grounds for the nomination. Namely, that the nominator, “Found some evidence that he existed.”

Subject for speedy deletion[edit]

I am puzzled about the nomination of the entry on Thomas Sturge for speedy deletion. The grounds for deletion being the nominator “Found some evidence that he existed.” Histragic (talk) 06:20, 26 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Two things happened. Someone nominated the page for speedy deletion believing him to be a hoax. I then pressed the contested deletion after finding online evidence that he existed. That's the note you saw. Shortly thereafter I also removed the speedy deletion notice. Sorry for the confusion. In general leaving comments on your own talk page won't get much response. I came back here to recognize your work on more obscure historical figures otherwise I'd have never seen this. In the future I would suggest using an articles talk page, a user's talk page, or by pinging a user. If I can be of more help let me know by pinging me or leaving a message on my talk page. Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 06:46, 26 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Barkeep49. I am still finding my way around the system. (Histragic (talk) 07:02, 26 April 2018 (UTC))[reply]
Sorry for the CSD, I just took what seemed the safe route given that the web link provided didn't work (for some odd reason which I am unaware of) and that all other sources were offline and there simply seemed to be a lot of details about such an obscure historical figure. Again, Smiley Sorry! 198.84.253.202 (talk) 21:11, 26 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I think you're doing quite well at finding your way around the system, Histragic, all things considered. Another tip: in order to ping someone, e.g. Barkeep49, you need to include the whole name malarkey, so it generates a link and an alert to them. See what I did in the previous sentence? Hope this helps. Carbon Caryatid (talk) 00:16, 29 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks Carbon for your comments re the speedy delete matter. I also appreciate the additions to the Thomas Sturge page which greatly enhance it. The support provided to new contributors in Wikipedia encourages me to continue. (Histragic (talk) 00:28, 29 April 2018 (UTC))[reply]
I was indeed pinged back here. I am glad you're finding your way around. Nice having someone do deep historical research. Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 00:33, 29 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

From strength to strength[edit]

Hello again, I'm so happy that you are sticking around and adding so much good new material to the encyclopedia. You are now at a stage where we can disagree on matters of taste. I observed something you had done, I thought "that's not good style; I'll find Manual of Style guidance to point out the error of your ways", and after some hunting around, I discover that you are doing things perfectly correctly, and that my preferred style is simply that, a preference, and your preference is equally valid. (And, in Wikipedia terms, if you get there first, i.e. by creating an article, you generally get to keep the style you set it up with. British v American v Australian English is one example.) So I still have a lot to learn.

I wanted to point out two ways to help your new articles attract a few eyeballs. The first is the WikiProjects. Every article has a talkpage, as you know, and even if there's nothing to talk about yet, i.e. no contentious edits to discuss, it shouldn't be a redlink. It should be blue, because every article should be within (i.e. drawn to the attention of) one or more WikiProjects. Take for example Talk:Thomas Sturge the elder (1749-1825). Which WikiProjects should you consider? Well, you could look at our directory. Or you could go to the talkpage of a similar biography, e.g. his son, and copy over the projects that seem relevant (e.g. Biography). That way, the editors of the named project will receive an alert to review the article.

The second way is to put your new article forward at "Did You Know". This will get any new (or 5x expanded) article onto the main page, for all to see. An overview of the rules is here. Good luck! Ping me if you need help. Carbon Caryatid (talk) 15:57, 3 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks CC. I appreciate your encouragement and mentorship. I take it that creating categories at the end of an article is a way of indexing it so that Wikipedia searches on those terms will find the article for inquirers. Your message has prompted me to explore WikiProjects. Some look interesting and I will see about joining them. I am wondering though the meaning of the term “main page”? (Histragic (talk) 06:14, 4 May 2018 (UTC))[reply]
Yes, categories are very helpful. I've discovered many fascinating threads of connection that way. You have to add the category at the bottom of the article, not add the article to the category. The way they work is at Help:Category. I expect you might be interested in Category:Whaling, Category:Whalers (the people), Category:Whaling ships (although, confusingly, its main article is Whaler, an ambiguity we ought to iron out at some point), and possibly Category:Cetaceans.
You are of course very welcome to join any WikiProject that takes your fancy, but you don't have to join any. Putting the project on the talkpage of an article draws the attention of subject enthusiasts; it doesn't commit you to anything.
The main page, or home page, is simply this: front page of the English-language encyclopedia. The section on the left just below the Featured Article of the day is a list of "Did You Know" factoids, a good way to ensure your work finds a wider audience, usually for six hours or so.
Do let me know if you want me to look at anything in your sandbox. Carbon Caryatid (talk) 17:14, 4 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your addition to whaling material in the australian whaling article - the paragraph after your edits does not have a single ref/WP:RS - it would be appreciated if you have material to hand that could solve that, just in case you do have so JarrahTree 00:31, 4 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The paragraph at the beginning of the section on bay whaling and the one at the end are based on wide reading of the subject over many years. To footnote general knowledge of the subject seems to me unnecessary, although I try always to reference specific dates and events. (Histragic (talk) 00:46, 4 June 2018 (UTC))[reply]
Please in that case read WP:OR, WP:RS and WP:NOT. Even if it relates to a book in general, or chapter in a book that correlates it is less likely to be challenged... open admission such as you have just given is a red rag to certain styles of editors JarrahTree 00:49, 4 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Whaling in Australia question[edit]

Hello. You stated that the whaleship Venus reached 31 degress south in the 1830s and thus south of the Antarctic circle. Did you mean 61 or 71 degrees south? OM2003 (talk) 19:59, 3 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for picking up that error. I have corrected it to 72 degrees. Don't know where I got the 31 from. Thanks again. (Histragic (talk) 22:42, 3 June 2018 (UTC))[reply]

Speedy deletion nomination of Alexander Birnie[edit]

Hello Histragic,

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged Alexander Birnie for deletion, because the article doesn't clearly say why the subject is important enough to be included in an encyclopedia.

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to work on it, you can contest this deletion, but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions.

CentreLeftRight 01:50, 11 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The article does not say why Birnie warrented inclusion in Wikipedia because I had barely started to write it. I tried to add the next installement but found I was unable to do so, I presume because of yout speedy deletion fatwa. By all means police was goes into Wikipedia , but to expect entries to be instantly complete in every particular seem, to me, both unrealistic and unreasonable. categories[edit]

please read the WP:Categories page - you are adding parent child/cousins and every relative you can find - please understand a more pedantic editor would come in and remove most of your word association. DuBuc (1797 ship)[edit]

Hi Histragic: Generally, the Category "British whalers" is for individual persons associated with whaling, particularly captains. The vessels go under "Whaling ships". Categorisation[edit]

Hello. You appear to be adding articles to Category:Australian male writers, when they are already members of Category:Australian male novelists, which is a sub-category of the former. As it states at WP:SUBCAT, "Apart from certain exceptions (i.e. non-diffusing subcategories, see below), an article should be categorised as low down in the category hierarchy as possible, without duplication in parent categories above it". Unless you see good reason for breaking this convention, can you revert your edits? Cordless Larry (talk) 09:06, 20 July 2018 (UTC) =OK.(Histragic (talk) 09:14, 20 July 2018 (UTC))[reply]

similarly at King George sound - you are adding what is relevant to this message. Also Fremantle was a whaling centre - but adding categories that do not have the distinction of former is misleading - JarrahTree 00:42, 10 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

ok your answer could be that the category has a distinction made there -https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Whaling_stations_in_Australia but hell the average reader is not going that far... strongly suggest that the category should be renamed the way you are adding to so many sites that havent seen a beached whale in some cases for almost a century JarrahTree 00:44, 10 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Much as I might selfishly wish you back to whaling (whatever happened to Whaling in the Arctic?  :) oh dear), I am having fun with Clarence Bicknell and am doubly delighted to have discovered his near-namesake Cedric Bucknall. Torrens Island[edit]

Hi Histragic, I've deleted your addition to Torrens Island because it seems very unlikely. After the Parsee was wrecked on the Troubridge Shoal it's very unlikely that the crew and passengers had gone to "Torrens Island" which is in the Port River Estuary (on the other side of Gulf St Vincent), which by that time had become the shipping channel for Port Adelaide. If they'd got that far, there would have been no need to land on the island, as the port is only a short distance away. I suspect that if the source says "Torrens Island", then it may be a mistake. The contemporary newspaper report suggests that it was actually Troubridge island. Cheers, Bahudhara (talk) 02:17, 7 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Bahudhara, I put down what was in the source but wondered about it myself. I should have checked the geography of the area to see if it was likely. Thanks for having done so.(Histragic (talk) 05:22, 7 September 2018 (UTC))[reply]

Information icon Hello, I'm Zackmann08. Thank you for your recent contributions to Bartlett Adamson. I noticed that when you added the image to the infobox, you added it as a thumbnail. In the future, please do not use thumbnails when adding images to an infobox (see WP:INFOBOXIMAGE). What does this mean? Well in the infobox, when you specify the image you wish to use, instead of doing it like this:

|image=[[File:SomeImage.jpg|thumb|Some image caption]]

Instead just supply the name of the image. So in this case you can simply do:

|image=SomeImage.jpg.

There will then be a separate parameter for the image caption such as |caption=Some image caption. Please note that this is a generic form message I am leaving on your page because you recently added a thumbnail to an infobox. The specific parameters for the image and caption may be different for the infobox you are using! Please consult the Template page for the infobox being used to see better documentation. Thanks! Yes, he seems to have been an inveterate money-maker, a man of many successful schemes and not afraid to put his shoulder to the wheel not forgetting the dirty hands. So he gathered up a team and on one occasion went whaling round New Zealand (from his momentary residence in Australia). Do you feel this really makes him An Australian Whaler? Or even a whaler? I don't. Cheers, Eddaido (talk) 09:19, 18 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Pelagic whaling voyages in the 19th century were significant maritime ventures that involved thousand of pounds in expenditure and the employment of 30 or so crewmen. The journal kept aboard the Australian is one few Sydney whaling accounts to survive and is the only one to be published so far[1]. It is unusually informative and shows the voyage began in June 1836 and lasted for two years and took the vessel to the coast of New Zealand, among the islands of Tonga, to the Vesquez ground and to the Kermadac Islands before returing to Sydney with 720 barrels of sperm whale oil and 430 barrels of oil from right whales in June 1838. He is also mentioned several times in this article as a significant Sydney whaler[2]. So, yes, I think he qualifies as an Australian whaler.(Histragic (talk) 23:19, 19 January 2019 (UTC))[reply]

categories[edit]

Regarding recent edits and reversions to Tumut and Adelong Times and Batlow District News, Hobsons Bay, Joe Perano, etc - please read WP:SUBCAT, in particular:

... an article should be categorised as low down in the category hierarchy as possible, without duplication in parent categories above it. In other words, a page or category should rarely be placed in both a category and a subcategory or parent category (supercategory) of that category

Thanks. I was a bit hazy on the guidelines re the hierarcy of categories but the quote above clears it up for me and I will try to observe that procedure in future. Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Harris Nelson, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Volunteer force (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Quebec-built ships[edit]

Hi Bardo Nerang: Great stuff on the builders and locales for Alexandria, British Army, and Wolfe's Cove. Do you have a source? I would love to add a cite to the info you provided, and add it to my stock of references as Quebec-built ships keep showing up in the work I do. Cheers, Acad Ronin (talk) 18:29, 27 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Acad Ronin: The source is Eileen Reid Marcil, (1995), “The Charley-Man: a history of wooden shipbuilding at Quebec 1763-1893,” Quarry Press, Kingston, Ontario. ISBN 1-55082-093-1. There are a number of appendices. Appendix A contains a table of shipbuilders. Appendix B lists sailing ships built at Quebec and includes date of registry, name, rig, tonnage, measurements, builders and official number. Appendic C lists the same details for vessels built at Montreal and other outports. The specific page numbers are Alexander (p.367), British Army (368) and Wolfes Cove (386).
I have an interest in British and colonial shipping in the Pacific in the age of sail. Whenever I find a Wikipedia entry for a particular vessel of interest it is usually you who created it. Thank you for making them available. Best wishes from the South Seas.(Bardo Nerang (talk) 22:36, 27 January 2019 (UTC))[reply]
Thanks for this. I have ordered the book through Interlibrary Loan and will photocopy the Appendices when it arrives. Adding the source and any additional info helps build out the article and improves our knowledge of shipping of the period. I am specializing, for no really good reason, in the period 1793-1815 +/-. I particularly like being able to link databases or books on roles (man of war, privateer, merchant ship, slaver, whaler, or East Indiaman) when a vessel moves through multiple roles. I also like linking in books on origins, such as Bristol or Whitby, and now Quebec. What we can do on Wikipedia is tie together all these great specialized sources. I am also glad that you have found articles I have created to be of interest. Given how specialized these articles are, I am surprised when anyone finds them. Cheers, Acad Ronin (talk) 02:14, 28 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for creating Rhys Richards.

I have just reviewed the page, as a part of our page curation process and note that:

The "books and booklets" and "articles" sections seem to overwhelm the article.

@I dream of horses: Thanks for reviewing the page on Rhys Richards. As a reader of Wikipedia articles I have noted the pages for popular singers, actors and novelists often contain a full list of their songs, books or movies. I would not like to think their achievements are any more significant than that of a good historian. With that in mind, the bibliography was added to the Rhys Richards page. One option might be for the biblioraphy to remain but for it to be hidden, as notes and sources usually are. My technical skills are limited and if you could set that up I would be grateful.(Bardo Nerang (talk) 22:19, 28 February 2019 (UTC))[reply]

great circle redlinked[edit]

I think you are going to find it hard to justify that - the journal is not at a threshold of notability that could justify a separate article - the important of clarifying WP:N is where there are suitable and adequate sources of WP:RS that are not aamh or similar sources... JarrahTree 09:49, 19 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

It might not be well known among Australian history journals generally but it has been around for almost 40 years now and is the leading maritime history journal in Australia. On another topic, I find my article on Bartlett Adamson is online but it is also somehow stuck in my sandbox and stopping me from using the sandbox for other things. Any idea on how I can release it? Thanks.(Bardo Nerang (talk) 10:01, 19 March 2019 (UTC))[reply]
Please read WP:N and WP:RS in that case - I think it is one thing to assert something has been around for 40 years (I should know I have parts of the early volumes) - another thing to to think of it as notable enough to have a separate article - there are simply not enough independent third party sources to justify a separate article. JarrahTree 10:31, 19 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
see https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Bardo_Nerang/sandbox&action=history - it is now clear - there was a redirect on the page it has been removed - it is simple as removing the redirect template. JarrahTree 10:37, 19 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for fixing the sandbox problem. I still think there is a case for a seperate article for The Great Circle. I too have written for it as well as others in the field. Favourable comment sometimes appears in those overseas journals that make clear they regard The Great Circle as on par with their own national maritime history journals. It would take time to track down those third party references so for the moment I will put the matter aside. Thanks again.(Bardo Nerang (talk) 23:49, 19 March 2019 (UTC))[reply]
It is not just a favourable comment here or there - for WP:N of stand alone articles about Australian organisations journals it really needs quite considerable cross referencing or substantial evidence of recognition outside of the organisations own published materials. Some organisations and journals have articles - but they are border-line - and it would be much better to expand the material in the article where it is until such time as there is a point where critical weight accrues relevant to the material for another article. Joseph Clark[edit]

Information icon Thank you for your edit to the disambiguation page Joseph Clark. However, please note that disambiguation pages are not articles; rather, they are meant to help readers find a specific article quickly and easily. From the disambiguation dos and don'ts, you should:

  • Only list articles that readers might reasonably be looking for
  • Use short sentence fragment descriptions, with no punctuation at the end
  • Use exactly one navigable link ("blue link") in each entry
    • Only add a "red link" if used in existing articles, and include a "blue link" to an appropriate article
  • Do not pipe links (unless style requires it) – keep the full title of the article visible
  • Do not insert external links or references

Thank you. Leschnei (talk) 00:10, 13 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I am intrigued as to why you deleted the Lexicographer category from both these creators of dictionaries. Any particular reason?Lexysexy (talk) 06:18, 19 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Lexy, I added the lexicographer categories to those two entries. Then, on reflection I decided that I had misunderstood the meaning of the term lexicographer and so deleted them. As I now understand it, the term means a compiler of dictionaries of word meanings. While the word dictionary was used in the titles of the books compiled by the individuals concerned, they were not true dictionaries of word meanings but rather collections of biographies. Hope that makes sense. Thanks for commenting though. It’s good to know someone is taking notice. (Bardo Nerang (talk) 09:02, 19 July 2019 (UTC))[reply]
Thank you, Bardo. I guess that you are, strictly, correct. However, it is interesting that both learned gentlemen were unable to find a better title for collections of biography listed alphabetically. But then, like academics defending their turf, I imagine lexicographers would demand correctness!Lexysexy (talk) 02:12, 20 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Samf4u:

Thanks for those kind words. I created the article in my sandbox. But when I came to launch it on Wikipedia I did something wrong and that original version is lost somewhere. I copied that draft on my iPad and entered that version on Wikipedia. However it lacks a lot of the coding for notes, images, etc. I have started to re-enter that coding but it a slow process with my limited technical skills. If you can access the original sandbox version and use it to replace what I launched on Wikipedia today I would be grateful. Hope that makes sense. I think I can help you recover some of your lost material. I'll get back to you within 24 hours. - Samf4u (talk) 00:09, 6 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Done - Only an administrator can delete content from WP. Go to your sandbox and click on View history at the top of the page. Every reversion of that page is shown there. If you have any other questions I'm more than happy to help best as I can. - Samf4u (talk) 13:09, 6 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Bardo Nerang,

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged Thomas Dunbabin (journalist) for deletion, because it seems to be copied from another source, probably infringing copyright.

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to rewrite it in your own words, you can contest this deletion, but don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions. Thanks!
