Another DAB Challenge Leaderboard Issue

I'm sure you're already aware of this, but you know what assume does.

The Leaderboard section is reporting the following error:

Database connection error: User 'jason' has exceeded the 'max_user_connections' resource (current value: 15)

Untagged Deadend Pages broken

Toolserver Pages

Ergh, Toolserver is killin' me. The error that is causing the dab challenge to fail is causing my database connections to pile up. I checked - the tables are still there, so my schema hasn't been deleted, despite what the error implies. Wild Horses

<<shrug>> I'd say that is the most famous "version", making it primary. The question boils down to popularity; if most people, when searching for Wild Horses (song), have the Stones' version in mind, the link should go there, with a hatnote for the other versions. Just the other day, someone wanted to point Balzac to a disambig because there's other stuff called Balzac. But since a large number of searches and links are with the intention of finding the author, the author gets primary status - proper bias, I suppose. Now, Wild Horses is much more debatable, and if the status quo stays I won't be upset. Mostly, I hope to see those who boldly move articles clean up after themselves. (I'm not at all worried about you, btw; I've seen you around and know you to be responsible; I only needed to make sure you were aware of the need of cleanup.) --JaGa^talk 22:29, 9 April 2010 (UTC)

Toolserver questions

Two questions for you...

1. I've noticed a small bug in recent weeks when working with the uncategorized articles toolserver; what happens is that a vandal blanks all or part of an article, resulting in category removal, and another user or bot reverts — but then, even though the categories are back on the article, it remains listed as uncategorized until another subsequent edit is made to the article after the revert. I have no idea how many articles it ultimately affects, but I've seen it at least four or five times in the past week alone — just as an example, this happened to Aretha Franklin on Saturday, and then Cluebot reverted it, but even after that it remained on the uncategorized articles list until I did a no-change save on the article several hours later. Is that something you're able to fix on the toolserver end, or is it an unavoidable server glitch?
2. I'm also wondering, is there a way to scan or search the uncategorized articles list for titles which have a specific word in them? For example, as a user who lives in Toronto, I'd sometimes like to be able to scan the list for all titles which have the word "Toronto" (or "Ontario", or "Canada", and on and so forth) in them, so that I can knock off a batch job in AWB whenever possible, instead of having to manually eyeball a list of about 15,000 articles one title at a time. Is there, or could there be in the future, a way to do that?

Ah yes, that bug has been an annoyance to me for a long time. I duly reported it some time ago, and it's been duly ignored. Would you be interested in updating the bug with your findings? You'll have to create an account on the MediaWiki site to get at the bug. Here's the bug report, which you'll see, is exactly what you described; the last update is one of those somewhat condescending "I can't reproduce it so obviously there's no problem" comments. Perhaps a word from you, a different user verifying its continued existence, could get it moving? It would be a service to the wiki, if we could only get the right person to look into it; this doesn't only affect the uncat reports. Huh, I didn't even know about that page. A change to the Toolserver some time ago broke most of my tools. I've rehabilitated the majority of them, but haven't worked on the Orphaned Images tools because I thought no one was using them. User Results

What is the criteria used to recognize a disambiguation link fix at your toolserver page? I am curious, because I cleaned up about 500 links to Washington last week, but the disambiguation link fix page shows none. -- JPMcGrath (talk) 19:08, 17 May 2010 (UTC)

Hi JP, it's great to see you contributing to the project! The link fix page only shows fixes done to pages in the monthly list, which is a list of the 500 most-linked disambig pages as of the beginning of each month. Washington was converted into a disambig on May 4, so it wasn't available when the list was generated. Hence no one got credit for those fixes. I wish the list weren't so limited, but I have to do it that way for Toolserver performance reasons. --JaGa^talk 19:20, 17 May 2010 (UTC)

That explains it, I think. I came across a list of top DAB pages with links here, which did contain the Washington page, but the monthly list does not. Is there a reason that the monthly list can't be updated from the other list? — JPMcGrath (talk) 03:58, 19 May 2010 (UTC)

It is updated from the other list, but only on the first of every month. This is the preferred way, as we can set a goal and pursue it through the course of a month. It would feel chaotic if that goal changed daily. --JaGa^talk 08:12, 19 May 2010 (UTC)

Toolserver suggestion

An article that has stub categories on it, but isn't in any articlespace categories, is actually considered to be uncategorized for the purposes of Wikipedia categorization. For example, China Stock Index Futures has the stub template on it, with the result that it has a category link on it for Category:China stubs, but since it isn't in any true topic categories it is still considered to be uncategorized.

So, is there a way that we can exclude such articles from the "Categorized articles" toolserver list, and include them in the "Uncategorized articles" list instead? Bearcat (talk) 00:22, 20 May 2010 (UTC)

Uncategorized stubs

Thanks for the change. The numbers may look daunting at first glance, but at least it gives us a more honest picture of the problem (and enables us to catch some articles that might never have been repaired otherwise.) I've also been able, so far, to identify about 5,000 articles that could be safely batched into bot jobs because the stub-to-needed-category correspondence was straightforward. I'm confident that over time we'll be able to whittle the list back down to a more manageable number again.

A couple of other questions:

1. Is there, or could there be, a search tool that could be used to generate a batchlist of all uncategorized articles that have a specific word in their titles? For example, sometimes it would be nice to be able to search through the list for "school", which would generate a list of all uncategorized schools so that they can be dealt with as a batch. Or "Arkansas", or "Las Vegas", and on and so forth.
2. In the longer term, if you or anyone else who creates toolserver tools would like a new project, it would be useful to have a separate tool that would list all articles which are categorized only by years of life, and don't have any other categories (excluding stubs, of course) on them — for instance, if a person is only categorized in "(Year) births" and "(Year) deaths", or "(Year) births" and "Living people", etc. Such articles aren't considered uncategorized for Wikipedia purposes, but they're not considered properly-categorized either, and generally need to at least have the {{morecat}} template added to them. But I'm just putting that out for consideration in case somebody would like to work on a tool for this purpose; it's not an urgent task and for all I know it may not even be workable.
3. Another possibility, if it's workable, would be a tool which lists all pages outside of articlespace (talk pages, user pages, sandbox drafts, etc.) which are inappropriately filed in articlespace categories. I come across this problem a lot and would like to find a way to make it easier to fix.

Hi Bearcat. I'm glad the changes are working out for you. This is becoming a very productive collaboration.

1. Definitely doable, my only concern is how long the query would take. I'll look into it.
2. We could do this if we can define a set of "weak" categories. That could be tricky, though. I'm never crazy about hard-coded lists because they require constant maintenance.
3. Sounds interesting. How would you define "articlespace-only" categories?

Wrongful deletion of entry on "The Slap" by Roger McDonald

Dear JaGa,

I am the author ("blueyonhill") of the article on "The Slap" which you deleted from Wikipedia. I am also the author of the novel "The Slap" which the entry described. "The Slap" was published in 1996 but the same title was used by another author in 2008 for a novel, which has either led to some confusion as to the physical reality of "The Slap" or in some peculiar way disqualified the book's factual existence in an on-line encyclopaedia devoted to the tested recording of fact. It may be that there are few references to "The Slap" on the internet, as the internet's role in bibliography and book promotion was minimal in 1996 compared with today. However I assure you that in library holding lists, on bookshop shelves and in the libraries of readers "The Slap" has a verifiable existence.

The Slap by Roger McDonald

"The Slap" has not won a major literary award, but several of my other books have, which in my reading of Wikipedia's literary guidelines (point 5) means that my article on "The Slap" could be restored on the grounds that "The book's author is so historically significant that any of his or her written works may be considered notable". Historical in this context relates to my long publishing history, the reality of my existence as a writer in the context of current Australian fiction, and not historically notable in any wider sense, I hasten to modestly stress (otherwise 99% of all authors' mentions would be up for erasure). As an aside, I doubt if you would have examined my entry on "The Slap" as closely as you have, if a 2008 author had not used my 1996 title for a similarly themed book that splash-landed in the internet age with attendant connective links, enough to wipe my proud little novel off your map. However, further to those guidelines, I shall in due course (after exhuming several dusty cartons in storage) supply you with a list of book review references from journals and newspapers establishing the priority of "The Slap" and perhaps saving it from Wikipedia oblivion, at least. (I have no doubt it will endure in less virtual contexts)

You don't need to get my permission; I just nominated the article for deletion and it was approved. I must say, though, I don't agree with the self-promotion going on here. If the book is truly worthy of its own article, it should be getting created by a person without a personal interest in promoting the book. Now, if you want to re-create the article yourself (or re-create using some other account now that you've revealed your identity), I'm not going to get involved, so you don't have to worry about any further interference from myself. Importing list of disambiguation pages

I would like to pick your brains as an expert in importing lists of disambiguation pages with links. A list is generated on the toolserver of dab articles with links. Well, I'm more of a Toolserver specialist, but I would create a bot that has permissions to edit on that wiki (you'll probably have to have it approved) and then use one of the many frameworks (see the table at the end of the section) to write to your page. about Milena (disambiguation)

Hi JaGa

Thank you for your message (see my talk page).

Although your reasons, which are good, I would oppose converting back Milena article. In my opinion personal name like Milena (which became international) is too important to be overshadowed by a small Italian comune. I'm just cleaning up mess with Slavic names and I've alredy had some similar cases (see: Dobromir, Radomir). So please leave the article unchanged (or do something with links).

Moves and User:Schwyz

Given this edit, what are your views on an WP:RFC/U. Although I find their moves worrying I find their lack of willingness to discuss them even more so. They've accused me of harassment and ordered me of their talk page and now accused you of a personal attack (completely unwarranted in my opinion - you were just raising a reasonable concern). Fair enough. I find ANI a very weird place, if something doesn't obviously require admin intervention they won't do anything. Even when I've had a broad consensus and only one person disagreeing they've not done anything against that person changing things to their POV because it's a content dispute and it appears that no matter what happens in a content dispute it won't be considered disruptive and so not worthy of ANI. If anything, the "I'm the victim" ANI attempt has encouraged me to certify; it shows he isn't interested in collaboration and is instead willing to cynically work the system to have his way. It was very disappointing, as I think he's an good faith editor who just needs to accept collaboration and consensus, even if it slows progress a bit. I'll drop a note on his talk page asking him to give proper WikiProject notice before attempting mass moves (assuming he isn't doing this already - I haven't been watching him). Now taken live at Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Schwyz as another user has said they'd certify and given that user's are now asking for blocks at ANI I think it's best to get on top of this as soon as possible. Does doesn't it. I'll probably leave the RfC/U up for the normal 48 hours in case they come back but it certainly is looking moot. Definitely a shame as their goals were worthwhile and I think with a little bit of tutoring they could certainly have come a very useful member of the community. It's a shame it had to get this far but I'd back off for a few days to see if anyone else could make headway but when they didn't I felt I had no choice but to start a RfC/U. I cleaned up the 80 or so links pointing to all of the pages other than to the Canadian electoral district manually at the same time as I made the change; for the remainder I put in a bot request, which is in the process of being dealt with. I'm surprised it hasn't been done yet - I made the request within a handful of minutes of turning the page into a dab page. If it has not yet been done, I suggest you take it up with WP:Bot requests. Hi. Thanks for your message. I don't think there are many links to the disambiguation page; User:M-le-mot-dit fixed most of them by editing the Haute-Saône communes template here. "What links here" looks as though its giving false positive results in this instance (does it lag behind?). I'd be happy to fix the ones which are left, but unfortunately I can't tell which are - do you know if there's any way to force the "What links here" results to update? Another quick request

As you may know, I've lately been doing a much more systematic "categorize or tag everything" run through the uncategorized articles list, but that's brought up a new issue (albeit one that should be easily fixable.)

The background is that SoxBot is programmed to remove the uncat template from articles which are already categorized — but according to its maintainer, User:X! there's currently a system limitation whereby the bot can't differentiate between content categories and hidden ones, meaning that it sometimes untags articles whose only categories are hidden maintenance groupings like Category:Year of birth missing that don't actually count toward whether an article is considered categorized. And then I retag those same articles again the next day, and then Soxbot untags them again, and on and so forth.

For the time being, my workaround has been to use {{morecat}} instead if the article has hidden categories on it, because SoxBot doesn't remove that, but then those articles reappear on the untagged list again the next day anyway. So could you double check whether the uncat list recognizes {{morecat}} as a tag for the purposes of distinguishing between tagged and untagged articles? Thanks. Just recognize them as being tagged. Since normally the template would only be applied to articles that already have at least one category on them (such as a biographical article that's in Category:Living people but not anywhere else), most articles with that tag aren't even going to show up on the uncategorized list anyway — this request is just to deal with the few odd exceptions where I've had to use that template as a workaround on articles that are really {{uncat}}s.

Since I'm not sure exactly how the programming works, I should note that if whatever bot or system tool does the crawling and indexing is looking for the template tag itself, it should be made to recognize all of the redirects to that template, not solely the {{morecat}} form. Oh, and by the way, just so you know: the backlog of articles that still haven't been either categorized or tagged is now officially less than half of where it started when you first made the stub change. Partly because I don't want to overload Category:Category needed all at once, and partly because I didn't want to sit in front of my computer for a week straight tagging 42,000 articles in one giant AWB run, I've been tagging in small chunks, and then directly categorizing articles that jump out at me as being ones I know how to deal with. One more quirk for you. Now that I'm at the letter M, I'm noticing that although it doesn't show up on the primary list, Main Page seems, for some reason, to show up on the downloadable "untagged uncats" list sometimes. Just wanted to check in again to ask if you're going to have a chance to get to this soon. Since the downloadable "untagged uncats" list only takes the first 4,800-5,000 articles off the complete list on any given day, it's now at the point where more than 60 per cent of the list consists of articles that have already been tagged as {{uncategorized stub}} — and I'm beginning to get concerned that the number's going to hit 100 per cent soon, leaving no room for articles toward the end of the complete list to get picked up. OK, I believe that should do it - it should now count anything that transcludes {{Cat improve}} or {{Uncategorized stub}} (or their redirects) as tagged. I don't have test data, so I'm not sure. Coyote Mountains Wilderness

I altered-(immediately after making the article, and finding all the links, and after changing the Arizona article's name-The list of U.S. Wilderness areas has the correct links to both Cal./Az articles), the Template:Protected Areas of California, (which shouldn't link 1000's of articles, anyway) by changing the Template to: Coyote Mountains Wilderness (California).
