No, I can't see any clever fix for this one. The big edit on 19th July (a) chopped 15K off the article size, (b) added several calls to an undefined note (c) had no edit summary to give us a hint. Two options: remove the efn calls, or revert to the version before the big edit. If pressed, I'd removed the efn calls and post on the talk page. That may attract the attention of someone who can assess the IP's big edit. -- John of Reading (talk) 17:13, 23 July 2013 (UTC)

Thank you for getting back to me. I'm afraid this isn't how Wikipedia works! Wikipedia articles about artists, performers and such like are not typically written by the artists themselves, or by their PR team - please check out the Wikipedia:Autobiography page for more on that. Also, a Wikipedia article should only summarise what other people have already written in books, journals and respected news outlets - please see WP:42 for a summary of the minimum coverage needed for an article to exist. Wikipedia is not a place to advertise.
If you are desperate to try to submit an article, then the way to go would be the Wikipedia:Articles for creation process, where your proposed page would be put in a queue for a team of volunteer reviewers to look at. How can I put this kindly? Wait a few years, and you may find that Slimting's career and projects have attracted so much media attention that someone writes a Wikipedia article about him. 'Background'

Nicky Slimting Walker (born 15 November 1982) is a British DJ Music Producer actor and writer from East London with Caribbean roots from Jamaica and Trinidad.

Best known for his success as a Grime Garage hip hop DJ. His birth name is Nicholas walker best known in the industry by (Nicky Slimting).

As a teenager Slimting featured on pirate radio Rinse FM, Deja Vu, and Kool FM playing drum and base. Starting from his bedroom with friend Maxwell D from Pay as you go crew they soon established themselves quickly on the underground scene placing themselves a slot on Kool Fm the leading pirate radio station in that era. Slimting and Maxwell soon become known in the industry playing at Kool FM the Kool school.

'Career'

He attended Sylvia young theatre school with a passion for acting and performing it was around this point of his early career that he found talent as a DJ at the young age of 16 soon becoming established in his genre of work, playing within many clubs both locally and internationally aswell as playing on pirate radio Rinse FM & Deja Vu fm. Chthonic in Megaron

HI John -- I've tried without luck to convert Chthonic (with brackets appearing in the article) to the reference Chthonic in the section "Purpose" of the article "Megaron". I note that it appears properly here on your talk page. RobLandau (talk) 15:00, 1 August 2013 (UTC)

The problem is that there are currently two different, incompatible, editing systems. The "old" way makes a link using double-square-brackets; the "new" way, using the "Visual Editor" uses a "Link" button and a pop-up dialog. If you edit using the Visual Editor and type double-square-brackets, the new editor thinks that is what you want the reader to see, and adds <nowiki> tags so that they show in the article. I have fixed the Megaron article by removing the <nowiki> tags.
I am sure the Visual Editor has great potential, but I for one have never used it except to make test edits. -- John of Reading (talk) 15:10, 1 August 2013 (UTC)

Albert Kitson again

Hi John, thanks for your work recently Please alter the 4th reference for the article - Albert Kitson, 2nd Baron Airedale. The reference is from the London Gazette - Supplement (dated September 27th, 1911), page 7117, but it is the "Supplement for the Coronation of George V - a list of Peers of the Realm who paid Homage to the Sovereign at Westminster Abbey on June 22nd, 1911" I was wrong thinking that the reference was relating to the Investiture of the Prince of Wales.

Data searching questions

Hi John, I was wondering a few things in regards to searching the full database for specific strings.

I'd like to search all of mainspace for the string "<timeline>" (in order to find all the graphical timelines that are not currently in category:graphical timelines).

Is there a central Request page, where we're meant to request things like this? (instead of asking you every time!)

I'd like to learn more of the details of how this is done. I'm thinking about downloading the July dump, and attempting to learn the basics of database-wrangling. If you have any suggestions/cautions/tips (particularly if you use linux), they'd be much appreciated.

thank you for editing&cleaning up the TMOQ article ( about the US -70ths bootleg label).It looks better,more neutral and I guess more up to the Wikipedia standard.I think I added a bit of a personal touch to it as it is one of my favorite subjects..Are you a senior editor ? Another editor have added a "warning" that "This article has multiple issues"..I think by editing you have solved the problems with "The neutrality of this article" and also " The article's tone or style may not reflect the encyclopedic tone used on Wikipedia"...How can this warning be removed ? Does it need a voting or how does it work ? Actually I only fixed one spelling mistake, and I expect I spent about fifteen seconds on the article. Looking at it now, yes, there is a long paragraph and a long list of record releases, both with no clear indication of where the information is coming from; and on the talk page there are some comments that need addressing. So I'm won't be removing any of those tags. I think the article needs someone familiar with the subject, and with copies of the sources, to go through the text adding the missing references.

..."Looking at it now, yes, there is a long paragraph and a long list of record releases, both with no clear indication of where the information is coming from"....well,for your information.All the serial & Matrix numbers for the LPs listed comes from my own private collection (yes, I have about 90% of the entire catalogue) and the rest from fellow collectors who have the LPs I dont have..So I guess the problem here is that I am (or my record collection) is not an acceptable source according to Wikipedia rules so I really dont know how this article can be verified as I dont think many other people know more about this than me & a few other collectors ..( and the guys behind the label but they dont want to confirm anything)

Would it be right to lavish any praise on the architecture and landscape of the Wentworth Estate in the article River Bourne, Chertsey

I am sure all other countries would have no hesitation. Anyway I thank you for your deletion of my quick character appraisal as it wasn't very British sounding as was too Peacock-sounding ("exclusive" particularly), something which really just refers to the golf course. @Adam37: Perhaps the river article should refer to "the 1920s Wentworth Estate development" rather than using a piped link "the 1920s Wentworth development". Then it's clear that the estate is notable enough for its own article. Prior to Kmzayeem's edit, the page Nikos Giannakopoulos consisted of just two lines, both being templates: {{db-author}} and {{dead end|date=August 2013}}. Kmzayeem added three lines: two were blank, the third was {{stub}}. I don't see a problem with this, since it is not mandatory to obey {{db-author}} - anybody with information about Giannakopoulos could have edited it to remove that tag and add some valid content. --Redrose64 (talk) 16:35, 23 August 2013 (UTC)
I hope all of you discussing this know I am not complaining. I alerted Kmzayeem in case they were doing something I felt could be construed as unusual on purpose. It seems it was accidental. It appears to me that they want to know if there is a way of avoiding the accident in the future. I don't use AWB so have no hope of making a good answer. I suggested they ask for assistance. My AWB runs don't often run into articles tagged for speedy deletion, so I don't have much experience of edits like this one. I do fix typos even if I see prod or afd tags, since there's a fair chance that the article will survive. But, going back to the original question, there are at least two ways to avoid making that edit when using AWB. One is to press "Skip" instead of "Save" . Another would be to go to the "Skip" tab and key \{\{[Dd]b\- as the "Contains" text, and also tick "Regex" and "Case sensitive". AWB would then skip straight past any article tagged with a "db-" template. -- John of Reading (talk) 18:24, 23 August 2013 (UTC)

I became involved when I read this section at the help desk. I investigated, and decided to nominate the article for deletion. When I added the nomination, I got a message I did not understand, mentioned this at the help desk, and tried to follow the advice I was given there. @Maproom: Yes, I saw the help desk thread. The instructions at WP:AFDHOWTO are quite tricky. It's much easier if you enable the "Twinkle" tool in your preferences, as then you can pick "XFD" from a menu, type your nomination into a dialog, and then the tool makes the edits for you. -- John of Reading (talk) 07:08, 27 August 2013 (UTC)

Template:EngvarB

I undid your edit removing {{EngvarB}} from WP:AWB/DT. Categories such as Category:EngvarB that are listed in Category:Wikipedia maintenance categories sorted by month are added by templates, and those templates should have a |date= which is supposed to be set to the month and year that the template was added to an article. And AnomieBOT complains to me if it finds a page in one of those categories and dating every template in the article at WP:AWB/DT (and a few other templates) that doesn't already have a date doesn't remove the page from the problem category. So if you want Template:EngvarB removed from WP:AWB/DT, please also remove Category:EngvarB from Category:Wikipedia maintenance categories sorted by month.

As for the merits of the template and category themselves, all I can say is that they have awful names and seem to exist as some sort of POV-fork from the other varieties-of-English templates (an edit "declaring independence"? I was doing a search on the subject to look for misspellings of "threats of" and ran across what seems to me to be weird English... as in "The book treats of <some subject> in a manner that...". That's a good question!
I'm a house-husband without great social skills. I am pleased to have found something I can do reasonably well, improving a resource that is much-used, well-respected, and free of advertising. Wikipedia has become the main thing I do when I'm not doing anything else. And because I mostly fix typos rather than, say, research new content, that translates into a large number of edits.
Time off? You'll see from the X! Edit Counter that there's a big dip each August for family holidays and while the children are off school. And, I hope, you can see from my contributions that I'm not on here 24/7.
I don't think burn-out will be a problem. I'm not good at stress and have tried to avoid doing anything contentious here. I'll happily dip into contentious articles and fix a typo or two, but I avoid getting into debates about content. Glance back at that edit counter and see the percentage of posts on article talk pages - and I expect that at least half of those are {{cclean}} notices. Congratulations on avoiding contentious areas, John of Reading! I've been trying to find my niche here. I first set up an account in 2007 but I've only edited sporadically until recently. I have a ton of reference materials but due to space limitations in my apartment, they are all in storage so, at the moment, article creation doesn't look promising since article survival depends so much upon adequate referencing.
I hung out at the noticeboards for a while, thought I'd help with dispute resolution but I kept running into Editors who were too angry to want to resolve their disagreements. Unfortunately, some of these users seem to perpetually be named in AN/I cases until they either quit or receive a block.
So, I wandered into Categories and it satisfied the ex-librarian in me...lumping and sorting! But I've found that when there is group of Editors who have been working for a long time on the same project, even editing choices which seem neutral can be seen as controversial to some folks. So, I'm spending a lot of time discussing principles of categorization to better understand the unwritten rules that come from experience and aren't part of the stated guidelines.
It looks like you search out common misspellings and correct them? I'm sure there are far too many of them given how quickly people edit. I know if I don't preview an edit before posting, I inevitably find some typo or missing word. We think faster than we type!
It sounds like you work on a wide-range of subject areas rather than focusing on a particular WikiProject so, if you don't mind, I might return to your Talk Page if I have a question about editing as you have so much experience. The text I removed is marked "copyright" at the organisation's website, so it cannot be used at Wikipedia. All text at Wikipedia has to be available under a free-to-reuse license. A license "for research purposes", as you mention here, is not enough, since publishers can and do re-use Wikipedia text for commercial purposes. There are ways round this - see Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials - but even then, other editors may decide that the material is too detailed, or too promotional, for an encyclopedia.

This template is used for the year articles of a specific tennis tournament, in this case the 1989 edition of the Benson and Hedges Open. The tournament name Benson and Hedges Open at the bottom should link to the general page of the tournament. The issue here is that this link only seems to work when the tournament name as mentioned on the year article is the same as the tournament name used for the general tournament article (or is the same as the name of a redirect page). Often, particularly for tournaments with a long history, the name of the tournament has changed over the years and thus there will be a mismatch between the year article and the general article. In this case the general tournament article is named Heineken Open (tennis). Can you see if this template has an option to enable this link to work properly or, else, is there an easy way to fix this? Thx! --Wolbo (talk) 13:02, 26 September 2013 (UTC)

I think the template already allows for this. Have a look at the template page, down the bottom, where it says "Optional parameters to change name...". You need an extra little trick to drop the "(tennis)" from the article title; here, I've set main_name = Heineken Open (tennis){{!}} Heineken Open to fool the template code into creating a piped link. BACKLOG OF THE WEEK Category:Pages with broken reference names

Hello John of Reading - thank you very much for your answer. You often fight off the vandal hordes, as I do repairing pages with citation errors. If I didn't - there would be a large backlog in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting and in Category:Pages with missing references list as in Category:Pages with broken reference names (more than 1500 yesterday). But it is impossible to work it alone. Do you know how to do a "Blitz" (excuse the comparision) to find willing editors to work on it. It is much more easier to repair references if you do it one hour, one day or one week ago after the errors were made instead of months and years after the error was done. Very, very difficult to find these errors.

Only with WikiBlame Search it is possible to find and repair such errors.

Yes, I agree it's much easier to work on one of these categories if you know it was clear just a few days ago. A while ago I found Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting with over 200 entries, and some had been there for several months.
The natural place to ask for help would be the talk page of a suitable WikiProject, but I can't think of one that covers these error categories. A post at Wikipedia:Village pump (miscellaneous) would be seen by lots of editors who wouldn't normally think of working on these categories; that might attract a helper or two. -- John of Reading (talk) 06:27, 10 October 2013 (UTC)

That one took ages, and all the other multiply-used references need checking as well. For example the reference "nycland" is defined three times in three different ways, but with the same name so that the software uses only the first definition; and used ten times. Month/year pages

Thanks for fixing the AWB edits to e.g. August 2010. I guess I haven't come across those pages before and through the AWB browser it looked like someone had just created little stubs for every month. --Rhododendrites (talk) 13:27, 23 October 2013 (UTC)
