Thank you for your kind response

The links you have posted should be very useful. Wikipedia is a very interesting idea; I have been using it for some time and I suppose I am just now overcoming my fear/ignorance of programming language, which, at first glance, Wikipedia appears to rely on. I was happy to be able to amend an entry and add a reference! It was a real success! I can see that there is a lot of help around... it can tend to be a bit intimidating, but I may try to work at it here and there, and become a more proficient 'editor.'

I am surprised you saw my entry at the help desk. I took it down immediately, once I saw that it had landed in a section containing a picture of cake! I didn't know how to move it. Thanks again for responding; it looks like I may have more questions in the future. If so, I will be sure to write you again! Quiconque77 (talk) 13:16, 29 October 2013 (UTC)

Thank you for getting back to me. Do feel free to ask more questions, either on this page or at the help desk. -- John of Reading (talk) 13:18, 29 October 2013 (UTC)

AWB

Hi John. Since you are experienced in using AWB, can you teach me how to fix typo errors using AWB. Thanks. JianhuiMobile talk 02:52, 6 November 2013 (UTC)

Yes, OK!
To get you up and running quickly, I've prepared an AWB settings file describing a simple typo-fixing run. It's at User:John of Reading/X3. Go there, click "Edit", copy it all into a text file, and save it with a ".xml" file extension. Then...
  • Start AWB
  • From the top menu bar, select "File > Open settings..." and choose the right file
  • At the bottom left, click "Make list". It should give you a list of about 40 pages that contain the typo "derieved"
  • Click "Filter", just below the list, and then "Apply". The list should shrink to about 20 pages.
  • At the bottom centre there are a set of tabs; click the "Start" tab
  • On the "Start" tab, click the "Start" button. AWB will prompt you for user name and password.
  • AWB will load the first article (Ali Arshad Mir?) and show you the diff of the edit you are about to make.
At this point if you click "Save" you will have made your first AWB edit! But I suggest that you first poke around to see how the edit is being made. Go back to the "Filter" dialog to see why the list shrank. Go to the "Options" tab to see the "Find and replace" rule that made the change. Look at the various menus to see what the options are. Then...
  • Decide if there's anything else in the edit box that you'd like to change.
  • Decide if the edit summary, just above the edit box, describes the changes acceptably.
  • Decide whether the edit should be marked as "minor", using the checkbox on the "Start" tab
  • On the "start" tab, click "Save"
  • AWB will save the edit and process the next article from the list
See how you get on! Any questions, do get back to me, or if I don't seem to be online you can ask at WT:AWB. -- John of Reading (talk) 10:33, 6 November 2013 (UTC)
What is a text file? Microsoft Word or what? Jianhui67 talkcontribs 09:10, 7 November 2013 (UTC)
@Jianhui67: Try Notepad or Notepad++ - something that doesn't add its own formatting or data to the plain text. -- John of Reading (talk) 10:22, 7 November 2013 (UTC)

@Jianhui67: Those edits look fine except for the one on a talk page. -- John of Reading (talk) 11:05, 7 November 2013 (UTC)
I know. When that list came out, talk pages that have the typo 'derieved' also came out. Can you also teach me how to fix other typos, not just 'derieved'? Thanks. Jianhui67 talkcontribs 11:08, 7 November 2013 (UTC)

To write "find and replace" rules you are going to have to learn a little about regular expressions. There's a tutorial here which I refer to from time to time.

The rules are accessed on the "Options" tab via the "Normal settings" button. In the file I sent you, there is just one rule: find \b(deri)e(ved)\b and replace it with $1$2. That tells the software to search for: a word break (\b); then the letters "deri" and to remember them (the round brackets do that); then the letter "e"; then the letters "ved" and to remember them; and finally a word break. Whenever that search succeeds, the replace rule tells the software to spit out the first set of letters it remembered "deri" and then the second set "ved". The upshot is that the middle "e" is dropped. And because it is remembering letters and spitting them out again, and because "Case sensitive" is not ticked, the rule works correctly with "Derieved" and "DERIEVED" as well as the lowercase "derieved".

Many common typos are fixed by the enormous list of rules here, so those are sort of "built in" provided you have "Regex typo fixing" ticked on the "Start" tab. But even for those you will have to understand the "find" string well enough to work out what to search for. One example to be going on with: the first rule in the E section is labelled "(En/De)cipher" and searches for \b([Ee]n|[Dd]e)cy(phers?)\b. That rule fixes "Encipher", "encipher", "Decipher", "decipher", plus those four words with an "s" on the end.

A short cut to all this, that would get you started without learning any regular expressions, would be to search through my contributions looking for the text "typo(s) fixed". The fixes listed after that prefix are made by the "built in" rules, so if you search for articles containing those misspellings you should find that the software fixes them.

That's all for now; I need to be somewhere else in fifteen minutes! -- John of Reading (talk) 11:47, 7 November 2013 (UTC)

Annville Mill

I was wondering why the content that i am adding is constantly getting deleted, those are the types of flour that are milled at that location. — Preceding unsigned comment added by MCGgirl (talkcontribs) 19:54, 11 November 2013 (UTC)

Annville Mill (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)
You've already had two good explanations at User talk:MCGgirl#Annville Mill by GraemeL and Jreferee.
Today I deleted two links to external web pages. The Wikipedia guideline on those, at Wikipedia:External links, is quite strict. First, although the words "McGeary Organics" occur in the article, it would be contrary to the guideline for them to be formatted as a hyperlink to their home page - that's in the very first line of the guideline. Second, you added an external link to a page describing one of the flours. Wikipedia already has information on spelt in the spelt article, so there is no need to send readers outside the encyclopedia. -- John of Reading (talk) 20:28, 11 November 2013 (UTC)

Clarifying the scope of a post

John of Reading: I am new to creating Wiki pages and I have thoroughly read all the warnings about advertising. However, we have had a lot of materials deleted. The Annville Mill is a Flouring Mill and therefore, we want to post detailed information about different kinds of flours, their history and development and uses. I would like, therefore, to establish the Daisy Flour name on the annville mill page. But then, perhaps, it is more appropriate to talk about different kinds of FLOUR on the Wiki Flour page. I notice there is a request for more information, there. Can you help me by monitoring my posts so that all my work is not willy-nilly deleted because a self-appointed editor thinks it is advertising? I want to work with it to make it informational but respectful of your guidelines.--MCGgirl (talk) 15:39, 12 November 2013 (UTC)

Thank you for posting here.
Your use of "we" in this comment ("we have had.." and "we want to post") seems to confirm that you are editing on behalf of McGeary Organics, so the Wikipedia conflict of interest guideline applies here. I'm sorry to have to point you to yet another Wikipedia guideline!
The Annville Mill page currently mentions Daisy Flour twice and McGeary Organics three times (as of this revision). That's plenty for an encyclopedia article, I would have thought, especially as this is only relevant to the last 13 or so years in an article covering the history of a 260-year-old mill.
The "Production" section of the Flour article has a tag on it asking for more references, not necessarily for more content. You may be able to help there, as somewhere on your bookshelf you probably have a book or two that confirm the statements in the production section and could be added as references. But please don't mention Daisy or McGeary in the Flour article, as that would definitely be seen as promotional. If you wish to use material from the Daisy or McGeary websites as references, I suggest you post suggestions at Talk:Flour so that other editors can review them.
I may know where to find Wikipedia's rules, but I'm not so good at applying them. So while I may keep an eye on your contributions, I will respect other editors' judgements about whether your edits should be allowed to stand. -- John of Reading (talk) 21:34, 12 November 2013 (UTC)

Khaji as Muslim OBC

Hi, I have read your edited page about Muslim Central OBC list for Andrapradesh http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Muslim_Other_Backward_Classes_communities#Central_List

But you have mentioned "Khaji" in that list which I am unable to find in http://ncbc.nic.in/Pdf/andhrapradesh.pdf

Do you have any other reference justifying "Khaji" Muslims as central OBC ?

List of Muslim Other Backward Classes communities (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)
Hi! Although I edited the article a couple of days ago, I only fixed a spelling mistake and didn't look at the article or its sources in any detail. But looking at the history now, I find that "Khaji" was added in this edit in November 2012, long after the rest of the table was created. Since "Khaji" isn't mentioned in the PDF file used as the source for this table, I have removed it from the Wikipedia article.
I can't find any other reference for this. This Google search finds a few pages, but they may well have copied the list out of the Wikipedia article some time in the last year. -- John of Reading (talk) 07:39, 23 November 2013 (UTC)

Archiving Help

I'm looking for help archiving my talk page. I noticed that you are one of the "stalkers" at the MiszaBot III page and thought you could assist. I made the change to ClueBot III and have the code on my user talk page. I want to show the archive box but as you can see it is a mess. I'd like to change to numbered archives instead of dated. Should I just delete the existing archive pages and start over? Your suggestions would be most appreciated! JodyB talk 23:44, 25 November 2013 (UTC)

@JodyB: Yes, that's a mess! Don't delete the existing archives, as none of the archiving bots know how to regenerate them from the history of a talk page.
I'm not so familiar with Cluebot archiving, but these steps ought to work:
I could do this for you if you first delete User talk:JodyB/Archive 1, and ping me here. -- John of Reading (talk) 07:39, 26 November 2013 (UTC)

@John of Reading:Please take a look. Something is still wrong. It is showing redlinked pages of the old archives which I moved. The ones do not show at all.

Notes, references, bibliography

copied from my talk page. Dear John - please answer him, I can't with my simple English. Thanks --Frze > talk 12:57, 28 November 2013 (UTC)

Greetings Frze, Thanks for all your work on references. You are probably aware this is something I also work on (you have fixed some of my errors, thanks). I wanted to point out a method for setting up notes, references and a bibliography. The article Abingdon (UK Parliament constituency) is an example. The method for creating notes I use is the {{refn}} template with a defined group and using the group parameter in the {{reflist}} template (see example). I use group=n for notes. IMO if a list of general references is not broken out into a bibliography section the reflist should proceed the general references. Just sharing my ideas and methods, thanks again for all your work. Best wishes. - - MrBill3 (talk) 10:01, 28 November 2013 (UTC)

@MrBill3:

@Frze and MrBill3: Yes, that's a neat way of doing it. But when working through CAT:REF, I aim to make the minimum change needed to fix the errors. I wouldn't change the style of the referencing unless there was some technical reason that the existing style couldn't be made to work. -- John of Reading (talk) 15:59, 28 November 2013 (UTC)

@Frze:

I understand both trying to get things fixed while making as minimal as possible a change. The notes section was more a suggestion for articles that were getting a little more work than the CAT:REF repair. However I do think if you are adding a reflist template to an article that has a references section with no reflist but a list of general references it is important to split them with a bibliography section. The difference in the edit to fix the page is just to make sure that the reflist template is added directly below the references header and that when adding the reflist template below that template add a bibliography header. Easy to create prepared text for pasting. I don't think this qualifies as changing the style as before adding reflist the style was a list of general references and some broken tags. This isn't a strong position I am taking here just talking. Best. - - MrBill3 (talk) 07:52, 30 November 2013 (UTC)

Happy New Year: List of hamlets in Saskatchewan I tried my best - what's wrong? See List of hamlets in Saskatchewan: Revision history, La Ronge, Saskatchewan: Revision history. Thanks --Frze > talk 19:16, 1 January 2014 (UTC)
It looks like Hwy43 (talk · contribs) has fixed that one. -- John of Reading (talk) 21:53, 1 January 2014 (UTC)
This fix has motivated me to look into implementing more sophisticated transclusion between List of hamlets in Saskatchewan, List of communities in Saskatchewan and List of municipalities in Saskatchewan. John, are you proficient in this? Please see my recent post at Wikipedia talk:Transclusion#Help transcluding sections to other pages. Hwy43 (talk) 23:59, 1 January 2014 (UTC)
Not proficient, but I've had a play with it. I've replied at Wikipedia talk:Transclusion. -- John of Reading (talk) 08:04, 2 January 2014 (UTC)

Opinion

I said my opinion and isn't this what this talk is all about. I don't think you have any right to do what you did. Now what do I have to change to make it so I can post it. Talk to me as soon as you can math genius like me. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ej50bills (talkcontribs) 08:09, 3 January 2014 (UTC)

@Ej50bills: If you can improve the Sexuality portal, then be bold and edit the page. Or, if you have ideas for improving the page but need help in implementing them, post at Portal talk:Sexuality. But please don't post your own essays or thoughts at Portal:Sexuality or anywhere else at Wikipedia, as that's not what the site is for. -- John of Reading (talk) 08:28, 3 January 2014 (UTC).
Thank you for the help. I will keep note of it. Sorry I'm just new to this kind of stuff. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ej50bills (talkcontribs) 18:18, 3 January 2014 (UTC)

The Tower Bridge

Thank you for correcting my slip. I was the designer of the 1974 alterations to The Tower Bridge ("Tower Bridge" is not strictly correct. I was told by the former Bridgemaster, Cdr. Rabbit RN, that the Bridges is named for its proximity to The Tower of London, not for its shape.). BHA Cromwell House ceased engineering design after my stroke in 2006 (I Can't now drive a pencil!) but still exists and is now a digital cartography specialist at [1]. I have my Tower Bridge page at [2] and a section through the bascule at [3]. The site at [4] is not maintained - we closed the account some years ago and I don't know if Demon will take it down. I can't maintain it (but I'll investigate). I describe my relationship with BHA and link to the TB material at [5], which is why I did as I did. It was to add information to your great original and keep the information alive, not to interfere with it. The red type appeared to invite something. Perhaps you would (if you wish) reply to [6]. Yours aye, Geoffrey Hartwell Geoffrey BH 10:14, 6 January 2014 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by GeoffreyBH (talkcontribs)

For article names in general, one of the rules Wikipedia follows is to prefer the name that is most commonly used outside Wikipedia (WP:COMMONNAME). So I think you'll have to live without the "The" in the article title.
I think the best thing to do with the red link BHA Cromwell House is to turn it into plain text. Wikipedia only has articles about companies that are sufficiently "notable", in the sense that other people, not connected with the company, have already written about them (WP:CORP). Most companies don't pass this test. I've worked for three software companies, none of which have Wikipedia articles.
(I'll reply by email as well) -- John of Reading (talk) 14:11, 6 January 2014 (UTC)

Changing Templates

Hello John - new problems.14:55, 7 January 2014 (UTC)

Template:Uw-preview

The templates {{subst:uw-preview}} etc. show no heading and no signature. See:

Information icon Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. In the future, it is recommended that you use the preview button before you save; this helps you find any errors you have made, reduces edit conflicts, and prevents clogging up recent changes and the page history. Thank you.

Template:Uw-editsummary

The templates {{subst:uw-editsummary}} etc. show no heading.

Information icon Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. Please make sure to include an edit summary with every edit. Please provide one before saving your changes to an article, as the summaries are quite helpful to people browsing an article's history.

The edit summary appears in:

Please use the edit summary to explain your reasoning for the edit, or a summary of what the edit changes. Thanks! Frze > talk 14:55, 7 January 2014 (UTC)

Proposals

Please, could you change the source text, so that they appaer with heading & signature. Here are my proposals for changing, with my simple English. Please improve it to correct English, for VPT. Thanks --Frze > talk

== Use Preview button ==
{{subst:uw-preview| ARTICLE }}--~~~~

== Editsummary needed ==
{{subst:uw-editsummary}}

What's your opinion of adding an useful illustration like mines in the German wikipedia:

>>> Will look like de.WP Vorlage:Zusammenfassung

Hello <USER_NAME>,
thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. However, please BE SURE that you (see picture) have added before
saving the changes always a short comment editing and / or proof of origin in the summary row. Thus, a much
more efficient pre-validation of the version history and the watch lists is possible for everyone.
Thanks and best regards -- ~~~~
@Frze: No, I'm not going to make changes to widely-used templates without discussion. Editors have got used to these warnings, and all the others, not including headings and signatures. Changing the templates in this way would also stop Twinkle working properly. Twinkle adds a "January 2014" header if the user's talk page doesn't already have one, and it allows for an extra message to be placed between the end of the template and before the signature.
Instead of {{uw-editsummary}}, you might like to use {{Summary}} which includes a picture. -- John of Reading (talk) 16:43, 7 January 2014 (UTC)
Thank you. Are the headings == Editsummary needed == & == Use Preview button == o.k. so if I will use my own template? --Frze > talk 17:34, 7 January 2014 (UTC)
I think "Edit summary" ought to be two words not one. Otherwise OK. -- John of Reading (talk) 17:44, 7 January 2014 (UTC)

Warning: Default sort key "1150s" overrides earlier default sort key "1155".

Flag of St Martin

Hi John, thanks for removing the fictional "local" flag from Template:Country data Saint Martin. Can you please also remove the "other information" note at the bottom of the page too as it no longer applies. Note that there are still a few pages that call the local template - I plan to fix all of these this evening. Cheers, Bazonka (talk) 08:03, 30 January 2014 (UTC)

@Bazonka: I reworded that note, but, as usual, forgot to purge the template page afterwards to make the new wording show up there. If you'd like to remove the note completely, you can edit Template:Country data Saint Martin/doc - that page isn't protected. -- John of Reading (talk) 08:44, 30 January 2014 (UTC)
Sorry, you're right - I hadn't read the note properly. Bazonka (talk) 18:50, 30 January 2014 (UTC)
