New Mexico State Penitentiary riot

I notice that you changed the edit I made years ago. I watched the Timewatch programme and I remember what I heard and saw because the descriptions of depravity and cruelty have lasted with me for a long time. I notice that you react without hesitation to a person who purports to be from the New Mexico State police because they object to something that does not make their organisation look good. Who are they? Where are their credentials? They show their own POV i.e. they don't like it and you go along with it. The police sat back and let the evil men carve up the weak and vulnerable. The guy who made these assertions on the programme had to wipe tears from his eye because of guilt. A version of what happened is all here... in this book (bottom of page 100). The state police could see the inmates inside but did not act. The ex sniper was just telling it how it was. And you deleted it. Took me all of a minute to find the evidence to support what I heard even though I cannot find the exact link to show.

And you deleted it because someone (with a purported authority) didn't like what it implies. The alleged ex cop also admits they were only there after the fact? How did they know? They don't? And you don't? Because it's quite clear they carved people up with blowtorches there are even academic articles on the subject.

I have no need for self importance to be an editor, a big cheese etc all I am interested in is information. You should take this an edifying experience. I have proven my case but do you have the balls to change/revert my edit? Don't worry I won't because I take no pleasure from this, it's not about feeling superior it's about being right. I have verified that someone saw the incidents and that person who I know to be a State trooper said it all in an interview on a TV show back in the 90s. The person who doesn't like it should prove now how that is wrong! No, absolutely not. I removed the words "a former State Police marksman" only because they were not backed up by a link to a reliable source; as it says at the top of the article, "Unsourced material may be challenged and removed". Is the Timewatch program or its transcript available anywhere? If you can provide a full source for the quote, please add it to the article; and if the source shows that it was written by a former police marksman please put those words back too. Or, if you have other sources that demonstrate that a "State Police marksman" was present, feel free to add that information to the article. -- John of Reading (talk) 07:23, 22 November 2010 (UTC)

What you provided at the Tahash talk page is what I wish I had known at the beginning, but I'm new to Wiki. Your help is really appreciated. I'm simply going to "plagerize" the work you did, just to get the great-looking table you constructed onto the article page. Then I'll study the method. To answer your speculation, I'm not aware that I used the enlarge feature during the Egyptian edits, unless the fact that I enlarged the page in a different place and at a different time (to make sure I got the Arabic characters that matched those provided at the English-Arabic dictionary) is the cause.

Just a few moments ago, after checking out your comment on the talk page and going back to the article, I noticed that the sample image of the indigo dye in the Addax section was much larger (the frame was not). It's a distinct improvement, but no entry for it appears in "view history". Any idea what did it? I haven't been using the enlarge function today. It just occurred to me that the 24-hour wait might apply, allowing whatever glitch that causes these things to revert back. I think now that if I'd left the original misalignment alone that it would have resolved itself later (and saved me a headache), just as my attempt to shorten the lengthened line later resulted in a short misalignment that I had to "undo". I wouldn't have been able to write that formatting from scratch, I just noticed that the symbols at Help:WikiHiero syntax were nicely aligned and wondered how it was done. And, of course, it's not plagiarism to copy the text from the talk page, since I put it there for you to check and use.
For future glitches in the image formatting, I suggest you bypass your cache and purge the page before trying to correct anything. Sometimes those steps will fix the problem for you. -- John of Reading (talk) 09:34, 25 November 2010 (UTC)
Appreciate the suggestions. The larger image of the dye sample turned out to be a coincidence and had nothing to do with the issue I asked about. It was apparently enlarged at the accessible source as an improvement, and the link at Tahash simply took the new version. It hadn't occurred to me to check the source of a linked and retrieved image, but it will occur to me from now on. Hoo-Rah! You guys are good! This morning I was working through a long list of articles containing the text "in April 15", "in April 16" and so on, and changing most of them to say "on" instead. That's all I did to the Old Perth Technical School article, and I think it was a correct fix. I didn't read the whole paragraph. Aha. Sorry, I didn't look back further but now I see that the number error (2117 instead of 2116) was there earlier. 2117 is the next-door Old Perth Boys School building. Village cricket

Hello John, could you take look at Village cricket please. Particularly the insertion of the word 'cement'. This appears to be vandalism that would be easy to fix. However the whole tenor of the article relates to 'village cricket in England', and the person who is altering this page seems to have an agenda to write an article on 'village cricket in India', to which I have no objection. But I think it needs an article of its own if he proceeds. Yvain, or The Knight with the Lion

Dear John:

I appreciate that you cannot accept original research, and I don't really care that my paragraph about the issue of the proper translation of the title of Chretien's Yvain and its implications for interpretation is not acceptable, but what I said about the translation itself is not original research, it is a fact. Every other translator I know, except for Burton Raffel, rightly translates "au" as "with" (check William Kibler, Ruth Harwood Cline, even the old W.W. Comfort). If Chretien had wanted it to be "of," he would have used "du." This is a distinction that was true in Old French and is still true today, as any Frenchman would affirm. Every medieval French scholar and Arthurian is aware of the proper translation of "au" in this context, so much so that nobody has needed to write about it. Nevertheless, every time Wikipedia translates the title as The Knight of the Lion, both in the article on the romance and in the article on Chretien de Troyes, it is perpetuating an error.

Follow up

You advised me to be bold with the Leigh-on-Sea article. I removed the sentences that I considered dubious, and suggested where to look for evidence that might enable their restoration. I focused on Leigh-on-Sea because when I started editing WP I used places I lived in for practice. I persisted, because I find doing this can be very instructive. I have done what I want with Leigh-on-Sea. I put some suggestions in the Southend-on-Sea discussion, and may follow up when material from the local museum reaches me by email, if I am still a WP editor.

I comment here on three of the many articles I have looked at:

1. The Peter Demos article does not consist of well formed English sentences and is unclear. I cannot make out what it means well enough to correct the grammar.

2. The Scientific citation article is very misleading (I put comments in Discussion and other discussants are critical) I think it should be flagged accordingly (but I do not know if there is a template for this) or deleted (there is a WP article with a similar name but "for beginners" that is excellent)

3. The Crystal growth article likewise.

I think I did a useful job with J. B. Gunn. However, I have wasted considerable time on the Royal Radar Establishment article because an administrator moved out names of several people who were described as "eminent" in a paper in a Royal Society publication, because I did not demonstrate notability for them. If notability is made a requirement for someone to be mentioned it is unrealistic for me to spend more time on WP. Michael P. Barnett (talk) 02:04, 23 December 2010 (UTC)

I am very impressed with the detail you have put into your comments on the various talk pages. I suggest that you might enjoy getting involved at Wikipedia:Requests for feedback, the page where editors ask for feedback on articles they are writing. I have just a few comments on your comments:
  1. I agree that the text at Peter Demos read strangely. On a hunch I tried a Google search and quickly found that it was copied directly from an MIT web page. I have therefore removed the text as a copyright violation and have warned the editor who added it.
  2. For 'name space clash' see WP:REDLINK.
  3. For the list of article tags such as the {{Refimprove}} that I used, see Wikipedia:Template messages.
  4. If you write an explanation on a talk page and then make a bold edit to the article, it would be safer to mention the talk page in your edit summary: "Restoring the list of names, see talk page", or similar.
  5. Kudpung is a very experienced editor but not, in fact, an administrator. At Wikipedia, the administrators have a few extra buttons to press - they can delete articles and block users, for example - but they do not have extra rights over the content of the articles. That is for all the editors to agree on.

From what I've read, it wouldn't make much difference, as I won't often stumble across an article with pending changes that have not been accepted. The bulk of my edits are made through AWB, and I won't even realise that the article has pending changes protection or has unaccepted revisions.
I assume that an AWB edit by a reviewer doesn't automatically mark the previous revision as "accepted"? - that would be a big mistake, because I'm only looking at the diff for the edit I'm about to save.

Forgive me for butting in, I was at J.delanoy's page and suddenly became very nosy! If the article is using PC level 1 (the level that is overwhelmingly the most common), then any edits from confirmed or autoconfirmed editors are automatically accepted. Only edits from IPs and brand new accounts need to be accepted (which is what the reviewer permission is for). In the case of an article using PC level 2 (I would be very surprised if there were any), only reviewers' edits are accepted automatically and edits by anyone who doesn't have reviewer or admin rights have to be accepted by a reviewer (or an admin). build -> built

Hi, John,

I imagine you're finding plenty to do, but I ran across 600+ errors of "was build " -> "was built " and thought of you. I think it is worth adding to AWB and I'm sure you could do that easier than I could. It is mostly in English as second language articles, but not exclusively. I have done almost 300 instances and found very few false positives (mostly stuff like "was in build number 42 of the software that incorporated..." though you do need to include a trailingspace: "build " in order to avoid "he was building" being changed to "he was builting". If you want to get a feel for it, work backwards from "Z" on the sort. There seems to be some work in "was rebuild" as well, but I haven't gone there yet. Same with the other verb tenses of both.

In my other window here I have a list of articles containing "to built", which has to be corrected to "to build", "to be built", or something else according to the context. According to Help:DEFAULTSORT#Default sort key, the DEFAULTSORT will take effect even it is placed after the call to the {{stationyears}} template. I have just verified this using a copy of Clubmoor railway station in my sandbox.
If you still need the template to remain at the end of the articles that use it, I will have to ask at Wikipedia talk:AutoWikiBrowser, as I think it would need a software change for it to recognise that this template is to be treated specially. -- John of Reading (talk) 20:52, 30 January 2011 (UTC)

Regarding FYROM

Well the name 'Republic of Macedonia' is illegal, since it is refered by NATO,UN and Europe as FYROM(former yugoslavian republic of macedonia). Now I've looked more closely, I don't think this link is appropriate for the Fatal Frame article.
  1. This URL shows me a page with only two sentences of text on it, with no mention of Fatal Frame, Himuro Mansion or Miyuki Isihikawa. You cannot use it to confirm a link between the Stuart House Recordings and the Fatal Frame article.
  2. Even if you did find a reliable source to confirm the link, it is only a very weak link and is hardly worth mentioning on the Fatal Frame page. If the film "The Stuart House Recordings" is ever notable enough to have its own Wikipedia article, then that would be the appropriate place to discuss its plot.

I was fixing a bunch of 'lead' -> 'led' when I saw that you were doing the same thing. You may be surprised that only today, after 85,000+ edits, I requested approval to use AWB. This was before I saw that you were hot on the trail of the same quarry. I would like to thank you in advance for your subpage 'Typo fixing with AutoWikiBrowser', which will undoubtedly save me much time and many missteps as I start to use AWB. However, I was left wondering how you found some of the incorrect uses of 'lead'. I have been searching for phrases such as "she lead her" that have few false positives. If you are just doing a brute-force search for 'lead', more power to you! If you would like to exchange tricks and information, I'm in favor of that, too. I have been grinding away at 'this lead to', and have nearly 400 left to fix, so the idea of using AWB really started to take hold today. Happy editing! Yes, we should be taking to each other! So far I've only been in touch with LilHelpa.
For "lead by" I used the AWB database scanner to find all the articles that match the regular expression "\blead\s+by\b". There were about 4000 of them, which was rather daunting, but I got AWB to skip many of them efficiently. I've added a new section to User:John of Reading/Typo fixing with AutoWikiBrowser to describe how I do this. I've also dumped a copy of my AWB settings into my sandbox so that you can have a look. (Click "Edit", grab the text after the "nowiki", save it into a local file with a .xml extension, and ask AWB to open it).
That file doesn't have my latest set of "Find & Replace" settings for "the the". I must get round to consolidating the various different settings files I'm using for different jobs. -- John of Reading (talk) 13:14, 12 March 2011 (UTC)

Hindus believe that we are responsible for generating our good/bad karma but God ultimately is the One who is responsible for dispensing karma.
