Welcome to the 2020 WikiCup!

Happy New Year, Happy New Decade and Happy New WikiCup! The competition begins today and all article creators, expanders and improvers are welcome to take part. If you have already signed up, your submissions page can be found here. If you have not yet signed up, you can add your name here and the judges will set up your submissions page. We are relaxing the rule that only content on which you have completed significant work during 2020 will count; now to be eligible for points in the competition, you must have completed significant work on the content at some time! Any questions on the rules or on anything else connected to the Cup should be directed to one of the judges, or posted to the WikiCup talk page. Signups will close at the end of January, and the first round will end on 26 February; the 64 highest scorers at that time will move on to round 2. Good luck! The judges for the WikiCup are Sturmvogel 66 (talk · contribs · email), Godot13 (talk · contribs · email), Vanamonde93 (talk · contribs · email) and Cwmhiraeth (talk) 11:43, 1 January 2020 (UTC)

picture

There happens to be a picture of Fred Evans on Flickr. If you sent a Flickr email to the photographer and ask if they would lower their rights, there is a better than 50-50 chance they will. Here is the wording I use and have had good luck using these words for years.

I write articles for Wikipedia. Your picture
https://www.flickr.com/photos/7339476@N08/7768433290/sizes/l/
is interesting and would fit into one or more of the articles I am presently writing on.
There is at least one tag in use that makes your picture not usable on Wikipedia.
Would you consider downgrading your copyright tags to ONLY
"Attribution License" so I could use it on some Wikipedia articles.
Do you have any other similar pictures?
Thanks for your consideration.

Guideline and policy news

Arbitration

  • The fourth case on Palestine-Israel articles was closed. The case consolidated all previous remedies under one heading, which should make them easier to understand, apply, and enforce. In particular, the distinction between "primary articles" and "related content" has been clarified, with the former being the entire set of articles whose topic relates to the Arab-Israeli conflict, broadly interpreted rather than reasonably construed.
  • Following the 2019 Arbitration Committee elections, the following editors have been appointed to the Arbitration Committee: Beeblebrox, Bradv, Casliber, David Fuchs, DGG, KrakatoaKatie, Maxim, Newyorkbrad, SoWhy, Worm That Turned, Xeno.

Administrators' newsletter – February 2020

News and updates for administrators from the past month (January 2020).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a request for comment, partial blocks are now enabled on the English Wikipedia. This functionality allows administrators to block users from editing specific pages or namespaces rather than the entire site. A draft policy is being workshopped at Wikipedia:Partial blocks.
  • The request for comment seeking the community's sentiment for a binding desysop procedure closed with wide-spread support for an alternative desysoping procedure based on community input. No proposed process received consensus.

Technical news

  • Twinkle now supports partial blocking. There is a small checkbox that toggles the "partial" status for both blocks and templating. There is currently one template: {{uw-pblock}}.
  • When trying to move a page, if the target title already exists then a warning message is shown. The warning message will now include a link to the target title. [1]

Arbitration

  • Following a recent arbitration case, the Arbitration Committee reminded administrators that checkuser and oversight blocks must not be reversed or modified without prior consultation with the checkuser or oversighter who placed the block, the respective functionary team, or the Arbitration Committee.

Harry O'Neill

Hi,

Yes, indeed it does:

"O'Neill, the Cardiff City and former Runcorn centre forward, has signed for the Berne, Switzerland football club, and left for his new situation yesterday."

Also matches up with the playing details on the ENFA website.

ENFA also states that the 1894-born player is called Henry O'Neill (not Harold) and was born on 2 November 1894, but didn't change that as it seems to conflict with other sources. J Mo 101 (talk) 14:22, 9 February 2020 (UTC)

ENFA has no mention of O'Neill (1894) playing for Cardiff. The source for O'Neill (1908)'s death confirms he died aged 31 and mentions his playing career in Cardiff. J Mo 101 (talk) 17:06, 9 February 2020 (UTC)

New Page Reviewer newsletter February 2020

Hello Kosack,

Source Guide Discussion

The first NPP source guide discussion is now underway. It covers a wide range of sources in Ghana with the goal of providing more guidance to reviewers about sources they might see when reviewing pages. Hopefully, new page reviewers will join others interested in reliable sources and those with expertise in these sources to make the discussion a success.

Redirects

New to NPP? Looking to try something a little different? Consider patrolling some redirects. Redirects are relatively easy to review, can be found easily through the New Pages Feed. You can find more information about how to patrol redirects at WP:RPATROL.

Discussions and Resources
Refresher

Geographic regions, areas and places generally do not need general notability guideline type sourcing. When evaluating whether an article meets this notability guideline please also consider whether it might actually be a form of WP:SPAM for a development project (e.g. PR for a large luxury residential development) and not actually covered by the guideline.

WikiCup 2020 March newsletter

And so ends the first round of the competition. Everyone with a positive score moves on to Round 2, with 57 contestants qualifying. We have abolished the groups this year, so to qualify for Round 3 you will need to finish Round 2 among the top thirty-two contestants.

Our top scorers in Round 1 were:

  • New York (state) Epicgenius, a WikiCup newcomer, led the field with a featured article, five good articles and an assortment of other submissions, specialising on buildings and locations in New York, for a total of 895 points.
  • England Gog the Mild came next with 464 points, from a featured article, two good articles and a number of reviews, the main theme being naval warfare.
  • United States Raymie was in third place with 419 points, garnered from one good article and an impressive 34 DYKs on radio and TV stations in the United States.
  • Somerset Harrias came next at 414, with a featured article and three good articles, an English civil war battle specialist.
  • Pirate flag CaptainEek was in fifth place with 405 points, mostly garnered from bringing Cactus wren to featured article status.
  • The top ten contestants at the end of Round 1 all scored over 200 points; they also included United States L293D, Venezuela Kingsif, Antarctica Enwebb, England Lee Vilenski and Nepal CAPTAIN MEDUSA. Seven of the top ten contestants in Round 1 are new to the WikiCup.

These contestants, like all the others, now have to start scoring points again from scratch. In Round 1 there were four featured articles, one featured list and two featured pictures, as well as around two hundred DYKs and twenty-seven ITNs. Between them, contestants completed 127 good article reviews, nearly a hundred more than the 43 good articles they claimed for, thus making a substantial dent in the review backlog. Contestants also claimed for 40 featured article / featured list reviews, and most even remembered to mention their WikiCup participation in their reviews (a requirement).

Remember that any content promoted after the end of Round 1 but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Some contestants made claims before the new submissions pages were set up, and they will need to resubmit them. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews.

If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! WikiCup newsletter correction

There was an error in the WikiCup 2020 March newsletter; United States L293D should not have been included in the list of top ten scorers in Round 1 (they led the list last year), instead, United States Dunkleosteus77 should have been included, having garnered 334 points from five good articles on animals, living or extinct, and various reviews. Administrators' newsletter – March 2020

News and updates for administrators from the past month (February 2020).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, the blocking policy was changed to state that sysops must not undo or alter CheckUser or Oversight blocks, rather than should not.
  • A request for comment confirmed that sandboxes of established but inactive editors may not be blanked due solely to inactivity.

Technical news

  • Following a discussion, Twinkle's default CSD behavior will soon change, most likely this week. After the change, Twinkle will default to "tagging mode" if there is no CSD tag present, and default to "deletion mode" if there is a CSD tag present. You will be able to always default to "deletion mode" (the current behavior) using your Twinkle preferences.

1927 FA Cup Final scheduled for TFA

This is to let you know that the 1927 FA Cup Final article has been scheduled as today's featured article for April 23, 2020. Please check the article needs no amendments. If you're interested in editing the main page text, you're welcome to do so at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/April 23, 2020, but note that a coordinator will trim the lead to around 1000 characters anyway, so you aren't obliged to do so. Please change the image if you have a preferred free-to-use pic.

For Featured Articles promoted recently, there will be an existing blurb linked from the FAC talk page, which is likely to be transferred to the TFA page by a coordinator at some point.

We suggest that you watchlist Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors from the day before this appears on Main Page. Thanks! Jimfbleak - talk to me? 07:18, 4 March 2020 (UTC)

Iggy the Swan

Iggy the Swan is not happy

Found out British sport is suspended in March which leaves Liverpool's title bid delayed, see team 1 and team 2 mathematically survive relegation delayed and see a clutter of postponed matches not re-arranged with some teams having at least 3. And who knows where every EFL team will end up with everyone in the Championship still in contention for spots in a certain zone in the table (for starters, the M4 sides - Swansea to Bristol City with Cardiff in between could get into the top 6). The football season is in a heap of uncertainty hoping none gets cancelled and declared fake results (Bolton 0–1 Brentford being the recent case). I also won't see regular editors editing stats updates (e.g. yourself = Cardiff and Struway2 = Birmingham).

Leonard Frank "Leo" Newton

Hello, since you contribute a lot to articles involving Cardiff City, I was wondering if you could be of some assistance. I've created the article Leo Newton, and he seems to have played for Cardiff at least in 1909 in the South Wales League and in a 1910 friendly against Middlesbrough. Is this the same player as "Frank Newton" listed at List of Cardiff City F.C. players (1–24 appearances), active between 1911 and 1914? I didn't want to change anything without being sure. S.A. Julio (talk) 10:25, 1 April 2020 (UTC)

@S.A. Julio: Sure, I'll take a look at some of the books I have when I get home later. Kosack (talk) 11:17, 1 April 2020 (UTC)
@S.A. Julio: Hmmm, not as straight forward as I thought it was going to be. According to The Who's Who of Welsh International Soccer players, the Leo Newton who played for Wales is actually Frank Newton (footballer, born 1882). I see this issue has also been raised on the eu-football.info site. Whichever Newton it was played four times in the Southern League for Cardiff between 1911 and 1914, which is supported by both the who's who and The Definitive Cardiff City F.C.. Kosack (talk) 18:18, 1 April 2020 (UTC)
Yeah, took a bit for me to figure out as well. Looking at the history of Frank Newton (footballer, born 1882), it seems they were previously identified as the Welsh international, before the author of the book cited remove the info, stating the source he had used was wrong, and they were in fact not the same person. I managed to identify Leo Newton (1888-1939) playing for Cardiff Corinthians and a local team called "Cardiff Post Office" as a centre-forward, so it seems that this would be a likely match for the Newton of Cardiff who played from 1911 to 1914. I was able to find a good amount of information from the National Library of Wales online newspaper archive, though unfortunately it seems to cut off at 1910. S.A. Julio (talk) 19:06, 1 April 2020 (UTC)

ccfc honours

the club actually put these honours, including the algarve cup and osnabruck tournament in the honours list in the match programme every game. they even include league cup semi finalists 1966 and youth cup finalists. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ak1927 (talkcontribs) 00:21, 29 April 2020 (UTC)

@Ak1927: Hi, club's very often claim every honour they can but we base it on certain criteria. Friendly competitions are, by definition, non-competitive so can't be considered a fair benchmark when teams can make make countless substitutions, play trialists, etc. Kosack (talk) 05:44, 29 April 2020 (UTC)

WikiCup 2020 May newsletter

The second round of the 2020 WikiCup has now finished. It was a high-scoring round and contestants needed 75 points to advance to round 3. There were some very impressive efforts in round 2, with the top ten contestants all scoring more than 500 points. A large number of the points came from the 12 featured articles and the 186 good articles achieved in total by contestants, and the 355 good article reviews they performed; the GAN backlog drive and the stay-at-home imperative during the COVID-19 pandemic may have been partially responsible for these impressive figures.

Our top scorers in round 2 were:

  • New York (state) Epicgenius, with 2333 points from one featured article, forty-five good articles, fourteen DYKs and plenty of bonus points
  • England Gog the Mild, with 1784 points from three featured articles, eight good articles, a substantial number of featured article and good article reviews and lots of bonus points
  • Botswana The Rambling Man, with 1262 points from two featured articles, eight good articles and a hundred good article reviews
  • Somerset Harrias, with 1141 points from two featured articles, three featured lists, ten good articles, nine DYKs and a substantial number of featured article and good article reviews
  • England Lee Vilenski with 869 points, Gondor Hog Farm with 801, Venezuela Kingsif with 719, Cascadia (independence movement) SounderBruce with 710, United States Dunkleosteus77 with 608 and Mexico MX with 515.

The rules for featured article reviews have been adjusted; reviews may cover three aspects of the article, content, images and sources, and contestants may receive points for each of these three types of review. Please also remember the requirement to mention the WikiCup when undertaking an FAR for which you intend to claim points. Remember also that DYKs cannot be claimed until they have appeared on the main page. As we enter the third round, any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed now, and anything you forgot to claim in round 2 cannot! Remember too, that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. After at least eight weeks of not having a single football being kicked and HM Government restrictions, I am not certain that this football season would be completed on time (30 June 2020) but at least some progress has been made on the virus which stopped the season. And I am also hoping our football clubs around England, Scotland and Wales would continue to run normally without being expelled and move into a newer version (e.g. the Hereford, Chester or Halifax teams as recent examples). Burnley F.C. peer review

Hi Kosack, I don't know if you remember, but at the beginning of the year you promoted the Burnley F.C. page to a GA. I've decided to request a peer review since I believe the article has potential to become a featured article. The structure of the article is intact, not much has changed apart from a few tweaks and replacement of some sources. There are of course still flaws in it and therefore I'm hoping you're willing to help, if you have the time and desire of course. WA8MTWAYC (talk) 20:50, 9 May 2020 (UTC)

DYK for History of the Wales national football team (1876–1976)

On 10 May 2020, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article History of the Wales national football team (1876–1976), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the history of the Wales national football team includes the first substitution ever used in international football? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/History of the Wales national football team (1876–1976). You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, History of the Wales national football team (1876–1976)), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Vanamonde (Talk) 00:01, 10 May 2020 (UTC)

I would like a bit of clarification on what I've read out in the "Second half" section on the recent newly good article. I've noticed that Joe Allen (Swansea at the time) has been positioned as a defender for a corner by viewing the commentary text from the source. When I see the list of names, they list him as a "CM".

I am half thinking that the word "defender" would be changed into "midfielder" although most of the Swansea team were defending from Reading's 48th minute corner which went in the net. Iggy (Swan) (Contribs) 14:22, 11 May 2020 (UTC)

Good spot, it could probably be read both ways. I'll ask the writer The Rambling Man for the definitive answer. Kosack (talk) 14:36, 11 May 2020 (UTC)
Well I've removed "the defender" from the prose. It's fair to say that anyone stopping an attack from the opposition is defending it, his natural position on the pitch is CM – the team listing can't cover all positional changes for all moments of the game. The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 14:46, 11 May 2020 (UTC)

Images and Captions on Stockport County FC

Hi I have been though the images on the Article Stockport County F.C. but I'm unsure if I have done the Copyright /Licensing correctly. I know you have had many articles reach FA status so I have a good feeling you'll know what it the right way to license something. I think I have done them correctly but nice to get another set of eyes on it incase there is something I have missed off. Mainly the clubs logo but the other images could do with a once over as well. I'm asking as its something that keeps coming up in the FAC image review. Also with image captions on the Article. I have been told full sentences don't need a period in the caption, again I have been through it but just someone to double check would be nice. Thanks, appreciate all you help with the article recently. Wna247 (talk) 15:05, 24 May 2020 (UTC)

Unfortunately image licensing is far from my speciality I'm afraid, it's all Greek to me. The good thing is you'll never really fail on an image review, these reviewers will help you through rather than fail or pass on images alone. Kosack (talk) 06:43, 25 May 2020 (UTC)
No worries. Also to note today,There have been comments on the nomination page. I have done their amendments but thinking about it wouldn't the peer review, copy edit and any previous action have covered most things. You said in the peer review "I would say this may be pretty much ready for another run at FAC, it's looking in much better shape now. Any further problems brought up would probably be minor enough to be dealt with during a review." I have a feeling that they want to do a overhaul to the article, it's been mentioned the trimming down of entire sections and clarification on things already discussed at peer review. I think that the FAC will get closed for a second time. Any advice/input would be appreciated. Wna247 (talk) 13:34, 25 May 2020 (UTC)
I think one of the issues TRM is looking at is the fact we also have History of Stockport County F.C. as a spin-off. Generally, these tend to be added when the main article becomes too large and the information is split, but this seems to have been created before it was really necessary. This has left the awkward position that the history section of the club article is more substantial than the actual history spin-off page. Kosack (talk) 13:52, 25 May 2020 (UTC)
And to add that the separate history page; while there may have been edits, has not been updated in terms of information since 2012 and most, if not all, the referenced information in that article is in the main article. To add - on the Talk page of the main Stockport County Article I did open a discussion for the History page to be deleted as it wasn't at the time updated for three years and as mentioned all referenced information was already in the main article so at the time it didn't serve a purpose. Wna247 (talk) 14:02, 25 May 2020 (UTC)
