Hockey player infobox

See the full example on Template:Infobox Ice Hockey Player for the abbreviation of the country. The example shows the infobox for Ales Hemsky who is from Czechoslovakia. CS is used as abbreviation for the country. When using the three letter abbreviation CZE would be used. But I've noticed when randomly checking some entries for hockey players that both are used. --claes 17:09, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

Göteborg Opera

Hi! I saw you moved the Göteborg Opera article, and that's fine and all (even if I don't agree). However, its always better to use "move" instead of copy/pasting since that removes the history of edits. Pax:Vobiscum 21:21, 4 October 2006 (UTC)

Since Göteborg Opera is the name used by the opera (in english) I think that is the appropriate name. Much like the ballet is called Göteborg Ballet (in english) and the university Göteborg University. Using the actual name just makes more sense to me, even though Gothenburg has a longer history. From the perspective of a tourist it also makes more sense that the town that arranged the "Göteborg European Championships 2006" and houses the "Göteborg Museum of Art" is actually referred to as Göteborg. Single use templates

Greetings Krm500,

I seen that you started working on Template:Infobox Gothenburg instead of User:Krm500/Sandbox2. I don't know if you were using the new template as a sandbox or not, but you should insert the infobox city template at the beginning of the Gothenburg article and not create a new single use template. We've been trying to delete such templates. What you have done looks pretty good and you should insert it into the article and work on it from there. Regarding edit(s) to ComHem

Hello, Krm500. I'd like to just tell you that additions like this one are not encyclopedic, be it true or not. The same goes for these edits a few hours later by an anon IP which incidentally happens to be used by an ISP in the same city that I believe you (as well as me...) live in. A forum is not a reliable source (WP:RS, WP:V) and neither are Google searches considered to be sources. If you find a few reliable sources (for example newspaper articles) that state that many of Com Hem's customers think that the ISP is a joke, feel free to add the information and sources back to the article in an appropriate section (named for example "Criticism"). – Elisson • T • C • 00:07, 7 December 2006 (UTC)

Where has Com Hem used Wikipedia for marketing purposes? I've gone through the whole history of the article and can't find a single version that looks like advertising. Either way, I don't see how adding statements such as "ComHem are generally considered as a big joke by their customers." helps the article not look like advertising. Btw, do you know the official name of Läppstiftet? I had one article on my watchlist and yesterday I found another article but with another name. The articles should be merged but what is the official name? The two articles are Skanskaskrapan and GötheborgsUtkiken.

The official name is AFAIK Skanskaskrapan. I believe GötheborgsUtkiken is the name for the restaurant at the top floor. I've merged the histories of the articles and rewritten the article a bit at Skanskaskrapan. – Elisson • T • C • 16:17, 9 December 2006 (UTC)

For that matter, none of the 30 NHL team articles, should have diacritics. Again, the NHL team OFFICIAL websites, don't use diacritics. Leave the diacritics, on the euro-NHL players bio articles. The NHLPA uses diacritics, I concede that. The NHL doesn't use diacritics, (more importantly) the NHL team official websites, don't use the diacritics. Sorry, Krm500. You've made no threat (concering promises of adding diacritics again). These linguistic arguement are hair-raising at times. Can we reach a tentative agreement for now. Keep diacritics off the Top Infobox (owners, coaches, captain etc), Current Roster, Team Captains of the NHL team articles; But alow diacritics on rest of article (example: Awards, HHOF etc). You & I, seem the compromising types. I've been considering recommendations for NHL euro/french bio pages. Currently the consensus is for such bio articles' titles to be English (no diacritics), content of course having diacritics. Perhaps when those players/gms/coaches etc retire (no longer are on the NHL team pages -Top infoboxes, current roster, captains- )then those bio articles can be moved to diacritic (title of article) form. I've scratched out my compromise proposal (it wasn't under RFC, my mistake). Seems diacritical disputes on NHL team articles, have subsided for now. Wanted to let you know, I've no plans of moving any Euro/Fr.Canadian NHL bios articles from diacritical title to non-diacritical title. I agree with your views, the NHLPA should be the bio's main source. NHL sources backing NHL team articles, NHLPA sources backing NHL bio articles. The NHLPA does indeed count. Images in Malmö

Hey, since you mentioned that the article had too many pictures, just wanted to hear your opinion on placing them further down the article, in an image gallery. Euro Wikipedias

I've since checked out the Finnish Wikipedia, discovering it's doesn't add diacritics to Anglo names. This is why, I've been adopting a more compromising attitude. I was dissappointed however, to see NHL team names being 'Europeanized' (but that another topic). These days, I'm more interested in ending the Diacritical dispute (one way or the other). So far the disputes, seem to have cooled down. In future, should they flare up again, I'm thinking of bring the dispute to the Arbitration Committee. Question is, can you convince people that all Linguistic Wikipedia's should give equal treatment to diacritics. Perhaps an AC ruling is needed, at this point I don't care what the result would be (diacritics or no diacritics). I just want the dispute to end, entrenchment on either side of this English Wikipedia dispute, leads to no resolution. GoodDay 18:14, 10 January 2007 (UTC)

Revert of the current lineup

Hi, may I ask why you reverted the lineup changes that I made? I took it from the nhl website from the official lineup of the last game. The only thing that I added was the IR reason and also I replaced the country of non-north american country by the region or province or state of the birth place. We do it for canadians and americans, why not for the rest of the world?

NHL season template

Hi! I was wondering if you could possibly make the conferance syntax optional or add a league syntax. I tried to add this template to a non NHL team season page but it didn't display league. I'll see what I can do. I don't want to make that template overly large or complex (moreso than it already is), so it might be best to copy it to a new template, remove the NHL specific stuff and add in more general syntax for a wider variety of leagues. Resolute 16:53, 3 March 2007 (UTC)

2007-08 Frölunda HC season Assesment

I would think that team season articles are supposed to talk about what the team has done over the course of the season. As such, I don't see it to be a list article. The Elitserien logo

Hello, why did you replace the 330x57 pixel version of the Elitserien logo with a 473x126 pixel version? It looks like an enlarged version of the 330x57 pixel image and is thus rather pixelated. Hi, I guess the image you took that we had in Fighting in ice hockey has an license that we can't use. Apparently it is bad to use images that are specified for non-commercial use only and no derivative. We will have to find public domain images for the article to get it to FA status. After reading through all the material, the only acceptable CC license would be {{Cc-by-2.5}} which specifies attribution but does not limit use to non-commercial and no derivatives. Otherwise the image can be speedy deleted. --Mus Musculus (talk) 12:24, 26 April 2007 (UTC)

Planeten

Hi! I saw that you questioned my revert of a link in the article SVT HD. The reason I reverted it was that Planeten and Planet Earth actually are two different series. Planeten was a series about the environment (global warming etc.) that was produced by SVT and broadcast in the autumn of 2006 (http://svt.se/planeten). It should not be confused with the BBC series, that was broadcast by SVT in the spring of 2007. Väsk 17:14, 26 May 2007 (UTC)

Sorry, if I came across as 'angry', but WikiProject Ice Hockey chose (over a week ago) to remove all diacritics from North American Hockey related pages (this includes 'birth places' on NHL team pages). It's just that, I found your 'edit summit' at Detroit Red Wings a bit disturbing - Sorry but neither you, or anyone else on Wikipedia, can deside what a city or countrys name is. I wanted to let you know that I undid your edit to the Devils page for a couple of reasons. First: if you want to eliminate the hyphens and replace them with "&ndash", that's fine. But please keep the year format consistent with other pages. Second: In addition to the format changes, I also made spelling corrections and eliminated a couple of POVs that were non-essential to the page. Just wanted to let you know. It was renamed Wikipedia:WikiProject Ice Hockey/Article Improvement, and it includes two section. The first section is called articles in dire need of improvement. It list articles, usually important, that are in very poor shape. The second section is called requested help. Users list an article they request help improving a certain article, which will facilitate collaboration, which is the aim of any WikiProject. There is one article currently listed there, Henrik Lundqvist, here. The goal is to at least get it to Good article status. Diacritics By Maxim In the past few weeks, there has been quite heated discussion about the use of diacritics in article name. The current guideline is using diacritics in the pages of articles of all player names which require them, but redirects are exempt. Task forces By Maxim There have been two new task forces started within the WikiProject to coordinate major topics. Sweden Ice Hockey task force This task force was initiated by Krm500. Its current goal is to improve Henrik Lundqvist to Good or Featured article status. It covers all Swedish clubs, leagues and competitions and associated articles, players and coaches that are Swedish, or have played/coached for a Swedish club, and arenas in Sweden. They plan to eventually operate as a sort of a sub-project, which will have its own articles for creation, ranking importance and quality of articles, and co-ordinate article improvement. Its current members are Krm500, Bamsefar75, and CLAES. New Jersey Devils task force This task force was initiated by Bsroiaadn. Its goal is to improve New Jersey Devils to Featured Topic status. Although it currently meets the required article count, the task force wishes to improve it further. Its area of coverage is very similar to the Sweden Ice Hockey task force. Its members are Bsroiaadn, JHMM13, FutureNJGov, Sportskido8, Michael Greiner, JRWalko, and Soxrock. Requested Images By Maxim After discussion on the WikiProject talk page, Serte created a page for Requested Images. The page encourages users to license images for use on articles. The page also has section to request images for players, arenas, game situations, miscellaneous, and team and league logos. The page has been quite popular; since it was created on July 21, there have been six completed requests. There are four currently outstanding requests: Patrik Eliáš — Photo of player, requested by Bsroiaadn Scott Stevens — Photo of player, requested by Bsroiaadn Daniel Alfredsson — Photo of player, requested by Maxim Hart Trophy — Photo of the original Hart Trophy (retired in 1960), requested by Scorpion0422 Article assessement completed By Maxim On July 12, Kaiser matias announced that he had completed assessing all the articles with a {{ice hockey}} tag, sorting them into Category:Unassessed Ice Hockey articles. Kaiser matias has ranked about 9000 articles in that category, and most were stubs, and "have no information at all", according to him. Everybody is encouraged to expand the stubs into real articles. This effort took around 5 months. A big thanks goes to Kaiser matias from me and all the project.

Diacritics

Sorry about my reaction to your discription of the reliability of the NHL and NHPA sources (concerning placename diacritics). After having settled down & now relaxed, I know you didn't mean it as an insult. I 'tend to be emotional (which is a negative trait, for a Wiki editor). I'm gonna stay semi-active for awhile on the Hockey related articles, for the sake of those articles (and particularly their discussion pages). Henrik Lundqvist

I was looking at the Henrik Lundqvist article because I believe you suggested at Wikiproject:Ice_hockey that it was close to GA status, but just needed a little work. It needs a lot of work, though, because a lot of the information was copied from the Rangers website. I put a {{copypaste}} template on it because of that, but haven't had a chance to improved it more. If you look at the edit before mine and compare it to his Rangers bio, expecially with the month abbreviations, you can see where it is directly copied. FL Main page proposal

You either nominated a WP:FLC or closed such a nomination recently. As such, you are the type of editor whose opinion I am soliciting. We now have over 400 featured lists and seem to be promoting in excess of 30 per month of late (41 in August and 42 in September). When Today's featured article (TFA) started (2004-02-22), they only had about 200 featured articles and were barely promoting 20 new ones per month. I think the quality of featured lists is at least as good as the quality of featured articles was when they started appearing on the main page. Thus, I am ready to open debate on a proposal to institute a List of the Day on the main page with nominations starting November 1 2007, voting starting December 1 2007 and main page appearances starting January 1 2008. For brevity, the proposal page does not discuss the details of eventual main page content, but since the work has already been done, you should consider this proposal assuming the eventual content will resemble the current content at the featured content page. Such output would probably start at the bottom of the main page. The proposal page does not debate whether starting with weekly list main page entries would be better than daily entries. However, I suspect persons in favor of weekly lists are really voicing opinions against lists on the main page since neither TFA nor Picture of the day started as weekly endeavors, to the best of my knowledge. Right now debate seems to be among support for the current selective democratic/consensus based proposal, a selective dictatorial approach like that used at WP:TFA or a non-selective first in line/calendar approach like that used at WP:POTD. Can you help identify this team?

Hey man, I can't figure out what team this is...and you know a lot more about international hockey than I (and probably anyone else in WP:HOCKEY) do, so I figured maybe you could help. Could you tell me what team is in this video? Frankly, I don't know whether it really is Domi and Brodeur, but how long the names on the back appear to be about the right length (not clear enough to read) and the numbers seem to give it a chance to be true. Even if hockeydb doesn't have them as playing for any team during the 04-05 NHL lockout, but it's possible to overlook a couple with how many people moved around. Can't remember the name of the team/event but it was a bunch of exhibition games with NHLers during the lockout, kind of like a NHL All Star team. I think they played local teams in Russia, Sweden (Färjestads BK I think..), Finland, Germany, etc. --Krm500 21:10, 17 October 2007 (UTC)

Featured List of the Day Experiment

There have been a series of proposals to initiate a Featured List of the Day on the main page. Numerous proposals have been put forth. After the third one failed, I audited all WP:FL's in order to begin an experiment in my own user space that will hopefully get it going. Today, it commences at WP:LOTD. Afterwards I created my experimental page, a new proposal was set forth to do a featured list that is strikingly similar to my own which is to do a user page experimental featured list, but no format has been confirmed and mechanism set in place. I continue to be willing to do the experiment myself and with this posting it commences. Please submit any list that you would like to have considered for list of the day in the month of January 2008 by the end of this month to WP:LOTD and its subpages. Hey, I read your response at IFD. I'm really sorry this has been discouraging for you. I know the image deletion situation has been annoying for a number of editors, and I wish I knew how to make it less. . . offensive.

On the one hand, the WP:NFCC policy says non-free images are only allowed in articles, and nowhere else. I'm really just trying to clean up, to try to get all our images in line with our policy. We have to enforce that policy.

On the other hand, I can see why this is frustrating for you and other uploaders. You have to deal with vandals and haters anyway, and it's not like you're being paid for your article improvements (which are significant!), and then you get image notifications about images you uploaded long ago, often back when the rules were different.

So how can we, the image-processors, deal with these situations better? We can't keep images around that are against policy, even if they were uploaded in good faith by productive contributors such as yourself. But we can try to avoid making it seem like we're out to get you. If you have suggestions as to how we can handle these situations better, I seriously want to know. This is why I don't get worked up about diacritics, people outside the project will always do what they want. As I have always said, just let sleeping dogs lie and don't get in an edit war with people outside the project. If you notice someone changing things in a hockey article that isn't from the project. Just wait a few days and change it back, chances are they aren't watching the page. I see we have a bit of a 'lame edit war' on adding the 'common English spellings' to the hockey player articles. I've started a discussion at WT:HOCKEY. I am not against using the native spellings of players, I believe that adding the English spellings as citeably used should be helpful, especially in doing a full-text search (outside of Wiki). Re FPC

Hi KRM, re Nordquist vs Pirnes I'm not sure exactly what you've got access to. You say "Do you think an non cropped, better post processed, high resolution photo would stand a chance in a FPC?". When you say 'non cropped', how much more can you get access to? I think for example people would at least want to see down to where the puck is for encyclopaedic value, and possibly more of the players as well. Cropping at the sides probably isn't so important, but this is too chopped at the top and bottom. As a non-hockey fan I don't really find it especially informative for a faceoff (I know that fans of a sport often have different interpretations of what is a really good image than casual observers do). Obviously it would need to be higher res as well. As the photo currently is I don't think it would stand much chance at FPC. Gretzky had the advantage of being, well, Gretzky, and I doubt voters at FPC would be as forgiving with shortcomings for other players. Well the image you saw was cropped at a 2-to-1 format, often used for online news. There is more information above and below the players in the non-cropped version. I will upload it later and then you'll get a better idea of how it looks. But my concern is regarding the composition, IMO the image is encyclopedic since you can see how the players position them self and their sticks for a faceoff. Thanks for the higher res version. It does have a bit more top and bottom, and I understand what you're saying re the positioning, but for mine it wouldn't quite do it. I really think most people would like to see what the players are doing with their sticks for example. It's also a little unfortunate that the ref's hand with the puck is against the dark uniform - it makes the puck hard to see. However I'm only one opinion. Thank you for your recent B-class grading of Håkan Andersson (ice hockey) and the tweaks you've made to the page in the past. I was wondering if it would be possible for you to find out his birthdate. It's a fairly glaring omission for a biography, I would think, and it's bugging me that I can't find it anywhere online. You've done a very nice job with the article, I think with just a little more work you could get it to GA. Unfortunately I can't help you, I have tried to find that information before but came up short. The name is very common in Sweden, it's usually very easy to find information about Swedes since all records are open and available on the internet. Well, at least you feel my pain. This article states he was 41 in April of 2006, which means he was born in 1964 or 1965. A few sources, such as this one, state his hometown (and current place of residence) is Stockholm, and I know he referred to Stockholm as his hometown at least once when talking about Kronwall. Yes, very useful website when editing Wikipedia. I limited it down to two if he actually was born in 1965 and lives in Stockholm, because one of them wasn't married. You still fail to give any real reason for your argument that "it has no place in the article", and saying it "is not encyclopaedic" without giving any rationale for it doesn't really convince anyone. A lot of the Gothenburg sites which are discussed and introduced just in the paragraph next to the photo, are on that signpost, so it really kind of doesn't make any sense at all to say that "people have no idea about it", because it's written right next to the picture, including wikilinks. Suggest you have a look at Commons:Commons:Licensing#Germany. If it was published by the government that looks like it would be public domain, even if the law was different in 1871. Otherwise suggest you look for the artist's name. As a life +70 country the odds are very good that the mapmaker was no longer alive in 1938, but some countries set the bar very high when the artist is unidentifiable. Good luck. Well it's Swedish law that would apply, and it's also authors life plus 70 years. So the map should be in the public domain, but on the municipality city planning offices website the claim copyright to all maps in the historic archives. New Linden image

I do like that image. I'm thinking maybe either in the infobox, or possibly somewhere in the Off the ice section, seeing how that section is rather bare when Linden did so much off the ice, and that he isn't wearing a hockey jersey. Personally, I'd like to see it in the off the ice area, as the current one is so clear and has him in a hockey uniform, as he was a hockey player. But try it out, lets see how it goes. I'm not aware of any statements that the Saddledome was inspired by the Scandanavium. At least, there is no such mention on the giant mural at the Saddledome itself detailing its creation. I've heard that it was a trend at that time to use that shape as it conserves energy and is more efficient. Thanks, it's not that important, I just found some published papers that compare them, but they don't say anything about the arena being an inspiration. Overall it's been a pain in the behind finding information about anything relating to the arena, would be much easier if I was working on the Ullevi stadium (next project!) which is just 500 meters from Scandinavium which has books and documentaries published about the stadium. But yesterday I got lucky and found out about a book which was printed for the 30th anniversary in 2001, but never published to the public, just given to sponsors and such. So far the rewrite looks pretty good. Obviously the history section still needs citations.  ;) One suggestion I would make is to beware of temporal errors. Events from the past shouldn't be written in present tense. I modified a couple instances of that in the history section. Regarding the 'Ian Cole' article

I appreciate your reference to the Notability essay regarding Ice Hockey Players. I would suggest that you (or someone on behalf of the WikiProject) take that essay to WP:ATHLETE with the proposal for inclusion of the 'first round draft pick' criterion. I don't think inclusion of that criterion would be bad; it signals that a professional team has confidence in the potential of a particular athlete, which is tantamount to a favorable review by experts in the field, which itself is a notability criterion for things like books. If inclusion of that criterion were to be rejected, then I would suggest that a note be added to the section indicating that essay-level discussions of notability of athletes in a variety of fields have been prepared by WikiProjects, with a listing of those cross-references. Thats good. Go ahead, by all means. My player pics are all low-quality and serve as better-than-nothing images until someone with a better camera (wider lens) has captured something. If your picture is outdated (if player looks very young) you can always use image_caption in the infobox. I have a newer pic of him too, but its from the same camera (and quality) as the old one. It's a different situation, since the players get picked based on their performance during the season leading up to the draft. Tedenby was drafted in the 2008 NHL draft because of his performance with HV during their 2007-08 season, right? Take a look at Category:Living people. It says:

"Expansion: As per conditions set out in Category:Births of the last 123 years, each individual born after 1885 (if year of birth is absent, earliest period of activity should be extrapolated), whose year of death remains undetermined, should appear in this category. Individuals of advanced age (over 90) for whom no documentation has existed for a reasonable number of years, may be removed from this category and transferred to Category:Possibly living people."

Iffy guidelines, it doesn't say that people under the age of 90 can't be included. The problem I have with this individual is that I can not find him in the Population registration in Sweden. He is not listed as being alive, but I can't find any death certificate either. I don't see what's "iffy" about each individual born after 1885 [...] whose year of death remains undetermined, should appear in this category with a caveat added. Seems pretty straightforward to me. We cannot speculate that people are deceased without any evidence. The caveat exists to communicate the fact that the community has decided that individuals over 90 for whom no documentation has existed for a reasonable number of years consists of evidence that the person may no longer be living. Your justification amounts to original research, which is not used on Wikipedia and certainly not on the biographies of living people. Verifiability is not a suggestion, it's policy. WP:BLP is also not a suggestion, or even a policy. It's a measure taken by Wikipedia to ensure that content on Wikipedia in no way harms others. In some places, even the mere suggestion that someone is deceased is enough for the state to be able to confiscate property and distribute it to others. While that's not very likely in this case, my point is that likely or not, obvious or otherwise, information on Wikipedia has the potential to affect people's real lives in serious ways and every effort to enforce WP:BLP should be made, and I take that very seriously. For example, I made a mistake on the Betty Tancock page, listing her as deceased by what I thought was reasonable evidence, and she turned out to be alive after an upset family contacted Wikipedia. Until you find evidence published in reliable sources that he may not be alive, or he turns 90, I ask that you do not remove him from Category:Living people. Thank you. I would consider categorizing someone as a living person when we don't know if he is alive to be original research. Verifiability is policy, and we have not yet verified if his is alive, nor have we verified if he is dead. I would have to agree, if you don't know if a user is alive or dead, they belong in the possibly living category. (ec x2)I'm only asking because CP made a comment about this on the RfA, so folks are going to be looking at this. For what it's worth, I think you both have valid points, and I don't think this should have been made an issue at the RfA. CP, I guess I don't see that it's an enormous BLP problem for the individual to be in Category:Possibly living people—saying it's unknown whether he's alive or dead is a big difference from calling him deceased. If there is a consensus that people under 90 absolutely shouldn't be in Possibly living people, it should make that clear in that category's description too. If there were evidence of that ambiguity, such as with (the perhaps too obvious example of) Richey James Edwards, then I would totally agree. But where's the evidence that this ambiguity exists? That he can't be found in a population registration? There could be many other explanations for that other than death. For example, Andy Kaufman can't be found in the SSDI but that doesn't mean that he's living. And I do feel that it's an important issue at an RfA for people to come to their own interpretation of this users feelings on BLP, the protection of which is one of the administrator's most crucial responsibilities. I gave my opinion, but I also did not oppose. People should look into this; if they think that I'm wrong, then so be it, but at least they had the opportunity to review it. I won't revert again if someone changes it back to PLP, but I do feel that this needs to be brought to the BLP board if an agreement can't be reached here. Cheers, CP 22:20, 13 October 2008 (UTC)

No worries, just a difference of opinion is all. To me unless there is a definitive date of death then you must assume within reason that they still may be alive, while Andy Kaufman can't be found in the SSDI there are other ways to prove that he is no longer living. I think where I am confused by your position is that how is possibly living worse than living from a BLP standpoint. If we have no sourced information one way or the other then possibly pretty much fits the bill does it not? Say they are dead when they aren't or saying they are living when they aren't to me is a much worse situation than using the word possibly. Anyways its not that huge an issue to me. Agreed. If we can bring some attention to the talk page, this category could use some refinement... and perhaps we can state the criteria in Category:Possibly living people instead of Category:Living people, which would be very helpful. I think that you're right, it is just a difference of opinion in some respects... I see PLP as questioning someone's living status, which should not be done unless there's evidence... others, however, may not see a fundamental difference between PLP and LP in terms of BLP, and that's understandable. Indeed, and I can understand your view of PLP, but I only placed him there due to lack of evidence of him being alive, or dead. Of course there could be other reasons for him not being listed i the population register, but I would say that the chances are very slim that it is something else then the person being deceased.
