New Page Reviewer Newsletter

Hello Largoplazo/Archives, thank you for your efforts reviewing new pages!

Backlog update:

  • The new page backlog is currently at 12713 pages. Please consider reviewing even just a few pages each day! If everyone helps out, it will really put a dent in the backlog.
  • Currently the backlog stretches back to March and some pages in the backlog have passed the 90 day Google index point. Please consider reviewing some of them!

Outreach and Invitations:

  • If you know other editors with a good understanding of Wikipedia policy, invite them to join NPP by dropping the invitation template on their talk page with: {{subst:NPR invite}}. Adding more qualified reviewers will help with keeping the backlog manageable.

New Year New Page Review Drive

  • A backlog drive is planned for the start of the year, beginning on January 1st and running until the end of the month. Unique prizes will be given in tiers for both the total number of reviews made, as well as the longest 'streak' maintained.
  • Note: quality reviewing is extremely important, please do not sacrifice quality for quantity.

General project update:

  • ACTRIAL has resulted in a significant increase in the quality of new submissions, with noticeably fewer CSD, PROD, and BLPPROD candidates in the new page feed. However, the majority of the backlog still dates back to before ACTRIAL started, so consider reviewing articles from the middle or back of the backlog.
  • The NPP Browser can help you quickly find articles with topics that you prefer to review from within the backlog.
  • To keep up with the latest conversation on New Pages Patrol or to ask questions, you can go to Wikipedia talk:New pages patrol/Reviewers and add it to your watchlist.

I just removed some more market-y material from the article. At this point I don't see a clear reason to contest the company's notability, and it's written pretty neutrally, so I've removed the maintenance tags (but the connected contributor tag on the Talk page remains). Should MoS shortcut redirects be sorted to certain specific maintenance categories? An Rfc has been opened on this talk page to answer that question. Your sentiments would be appreciated!  Paine Ellsworth  put'r there  17:26, 14 December 2017 (UTC)

Joe List article issues

Hey,

New editor. Noticed an issue header on Joe List's page, thought getting them resolved would be a good first project. Especially since releasing a netflix special will probably get a lot of hits.

Anyways, one by one:

Notability: Possibly accurate, but if this article hasn't been deleted before his netflix special, I doubt it'll be worth deleting afterwards. Can revisit.

BLP sources: Not sure how many are expected for an article this short. Maybe two is on the low end, but it seems like a normal amount for similar articles.

Third party: I guess so? But do you actually think any of the info is false? If we had a third-party source, it'd be List repeating the same info in an interview, which doesn't really lend any actual added objectivity, if you think about it.

I won't delete the warnings immediately, unless I don't hear back from you for a while. Also, I think the Sirius Radio link seems like a plug, that should probably get removed, but I'm not sure how to do so since the two specials probably need to be referenced somehow.

Hi, welcome. Wikipedia doesn't really have an "oh, well, this will never get fixed or deleted, so let's remove this tag" criterion. If notability is unclear, the {{notability}} tag should remain to signal this to anyone inclined to pursue it, either determining that the subject is truly not notable, or introducing (more) sources to establish notability. If the Netflix series has led to notability where it might not have existed before, it's still ideal to find sources that appeared later that will help establish this.
Multiple independent and reliable sources with significant coverage are needed to establish notability, unless the subject meets a red-line special notability guideline. Right now, this article has only one independent source. His own website is of no value for establish notability, and of little value for verification purposes. It isn't a question of whether anyone thinks that certain information is false, it's just that, formally speaking the substantive information should come from somewhere else. Wikipedia's purpose is to summarize information available elsewhere.
It's OK to indicate that someone's show is on such-and-such a channel (such as Sirius or Netflix), but it's good that you're thinking about things like that. Largoplazo (talk) 18:19, 26 December 2017 (UTC)
I'm having second thoughts about the Sirius Radio issue. I was interpreting it as saying he appears there regularly, but to say that his albums (which were created independently of Sirius) happen to be played there is somewhere between a plug and trivia that should be dispensed with. Largoplazo (talk) 18:22, 26 December 2017 (UTC)
What do we do with articles like this? If I'd just straight up deleted it for notability reasons, would you have been okay with that? I guess we need wikipedia vets to make that call. For now I'll just update according to guidelines and let guys like you do what they'll do.
Added a third-party source, deleted Sirius Radio mention. --Brinkvs (talk) 22:07, 26 December 2017 (UTC)
A tagged article can sit untouched indefinitely, as long as its presence isn't "sinful" (as in the case of advertising, defamation, hoaxes and misinformation, unsourced BLPs, and copyright infringements). See Wikipedia:There is no deadline.
If you feel that notability is questionable and the article doesn't even give any credible indication of the person's significance, you could submit it for speedy deletion under criterion A7. In that case, an administrator will either agree and delete it or else remove the speedy deletion tag.
If the article claims significance, but you feel strongly that there's no case to be made for the person's notability, so much so that you doubt anyone would disagree, you could go with proposed deletion. In that case, anyone who disagrees can remove the deletion tag, and then that avenue for deletion of that article is permanently closed.
Otherwise, if you feel strongly enough that the article might not qualify but not strongly enough to justify speedy or proposed deletion, start a deletion discussion and get input from others over a period of a week or more, after which an administrator will evaluate the discussion and decide whether a consensus has been established that the article doesn't meet the guidelines for inclusion. Largoplazo (talk) 22:45, 26 December 2017 (UTC)
If I've whetted your appetite, check out detailed discussion about vetting pages at Wikipedia:New pages patrol. Largoplazo (talk) 22:50, 26 December 2017 (UTC)
Oh, I'm whett indeed ;)
I looked into the article on Notability, in particular the section "Any Biography", in particular particular the sub section "The person has made a widely recognized contribution that is part of the enduring historical record in his or her specific field." In particular particular particular the ref which says "An actor who has been featured in magazines has been written about, in depth, independently in multiple magazine feature articles, by magazine article writers."
By which standard, I believe the article in question passes the notability test (I will add one more independent source just to make sure). But if you accept that logic, I will apply it to other comedians' wiki pages, which would mean creating a lot of new wiki pages. If you think this is bad for wikipedia, I guess I'll believe that. But that would mean that the notability guidelines need to be refined, which is obviously a big endeavor. I don't know.
Please correct me. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Brinkvs (talkcontribs) 11:46, 29 December 2017 (UTC)

New Years new page backlog drive

Hello Largoplazo/Archives, thank you for your efforts reviewing new pages!

Announcing the NPP New Year Backlog Drive!

We have done amazing work so far in December to reduce the New Pages Feed backlog by over 3000 articles! Now is the time to capitalise on our momentum and help eliminate the backlog!

The backlog drive will begin on January 1st and run until January 29th. Prize tiers and other info can be found HERE.

Awards will be given in tiers in two categories:

  • The total number of reviews completed for the month.
  • The minimum weekly total maintained for all four weeks of the backlog drive.

NOTE: It is extremely important that we focus on quality reviewing. Despite our goal of reducing the backlog as much as possible, please do not rush while reviewing.

Heyup. I clumsily archived a discussion rather than delete it from a talk page. It has been nominated for speedy deletion, but there is content on the actual talk page. It's a draft. It's OK to start a draft with content in another language, if the idea is to translate it or see if others will translate it to prepare it for moving to article space. But, also, you didn't follow any of the procedures for deleting pages, as you placed generic deletion tag at the bottom of the page, without giving a reason, and when there were no grounds for speedy deletion. Also, this doesn't explain why you changed the name of the reflist tag to realist. See WP:Deletion process for more information. Largoplazo (talk) 13:05, 8 January 2018 (UTC)

Leadec quality check

Hi Largoplazo! Many weeks ago you talked to me because of this Leadec article. I've removed the maintenance banner after some improvements and a notice / question on the talk page. Meanwhile you put the banner back again in the article. I may ask you to check the issue again and give me some hints, what is missing. There is now one link from another article. So it's not an orphan anymore, but I know this is a not remarkable change. Half-orphan. But the "Sources too closely associated with the subject" were replaced with external sources (Reuters, CEO Magazine, businesspress24), before I tried to remove the banner. And I thought the criteria for for notable companies are met now, too. But maybe I am wrong and you still disagree? Just some background: Leadec is a company, which was formerly one half of the large and very old german Voith concern. Voith was founded 1867, then there was a division of the concern "Voith Industrial Services" founded 1962. This division was sold last year and got this new name. But they divided Voith it in two parts. Now Voith and Leadec are two transnational companies with about 16 to 20k employees each. RichardHeigl (talk) 15:47, 17 January 2018 (UTC)

@RichardHeigl: Sorry, I haven't gotten around to examining it yet. I do see that no changes have been made since I reposted the maintenance templates. Largoplazo (talk) 15:47, 18 January 2018 (UTC)

--Out of this World Adventure (talk) 15:58, 17 January 2018 (UTC)

@Out of this World Adventure: Sorry, what kind of help are you looking for? I kind of agree with the people who contributed to the deletion discussion, that this one feature out of many that Google Street View makes available got a burst of announcements when it came into existence, and has received no coverage since then, so there is no sustained coverage as is necessary to establish notability. Further, the article had no information in it beyond what's already in the article that it's been redirected to. I know that's a little frustrating, but it gets harder and harder over time to make new entries to Wikipedia because it already covers so many things. To come up with topics that are truly new, as well as notable, calls for some determination! Largoplazo (talk) 15:50, 18 January 2018 (UTC)

Jessica

Hi. There is no article for that album, it's only a redirect and shouldn't have been embedded. In ictu oculi (talk) 22:54, 18 January 2018 (UTC)

@In ictu oculi: Hello. You're right that having the redirect in the subject didn't comply with MOS:DABSECTION. The simplest way to bring it into compliance would have been to revise Jessica (album) to point to Jessica Folcker#Albums. On the other hand, it's occurring to me that since we have information on two different albums called "Jessica", Jessica (album) should actually be revised to redirect to here where both albums by that name can be found. Does that make sense to you?
So, in the end, I think that the description as you have it is almost OK, but it would be even more helpful if the link pointed to the Albums section under Jessica Folcker. What do you think about that?
Finally: There's supposed to be only one blue link per entry, and I've never seen anyone link to another language's Wikipedia from a dab page before. Is there precedent for having that "sv" link there? Largoplazo (talk) 02:41, 19 January 2018 (UTC)
I got the idea from seeing others use it but it isn't common no. However it does alert readers to existence of an article on another wiki. In ictu oculi (talk) 10:00, 19 January 2018 (UTC)

I misread the time stamp and hastily tagged this article for deletion, but the page creator's talk page seems to show a long list of article deletions, and possibly some WP:CIR issues. I'm not planning to do anything with it, but it's only been up for ten minutes, and he wrote that he was working on it, so it's way too soon to treat it like a case where a page is left empty by someone who has abandoned it. Largoplazo (talk) 01:21, 22 January 2018 (UTC)

Hate

Why are you hating Michael?? Your editings on Elizabeth Michael shows that you hate her so much ,like you're trying to destroy her reputation and brand .Are you Tanzanian? Sony22 (talk) 20:32, 26 January 2018 (UTC)

@Sony22: I never heard of her, or of Steven Kanumba, before I came upon this article, which happened after I'd started patrolling an article on one of her films. I started looking up sources to help fill in details that were missing, and then learned that she had been convicted of manslaughter, and yet, somehow, that information was missing from the article. So I added it.
Are you implying that in Tanzania, manslaughter is considered a trivial matter, and not something that would appear in an encyclopedia article about somebody who had been convicted of it, something that would only be added out of hate? Or is it that you thought Wikipedia, rather than being an encyclopedia, is a fan site whose purpose is to say only nice things about people, to make them look good? Or is that that you think that if you're convinced by her testimony, then it doesn't matter that the High Court of Tanzania found her guilty? Even if she was convicted wrongly—and even if she'd been found not guilty—it's still extremely significant that she was even charged. What is your rationale for trying to keep this information out of the article? Largoplazo (talk) 20:38, 26 January 2018 (UTC)
@Sony22: Also, your attempts to bury the conviction are why the article has already been through two rounds of protection. Any further disruption, and I believe it's likely that either the page will be protected indefinitely, or an administrator will block you, or both. Largoplazo (talk) 20:55, 26 January 2018 (UTC)

False information

Lol.! You never heard of her and you are here busy adding wrong references saying she admitted to having pushed him, while she didn't admit,am from Tanzania and am journalist ,and when I remove those false information why are busy undo,?? Do you know everything. She didn't push him the guy was drunk so he fell down himself he wasn't pushed you have to understand, stop forcing things by referencing with wrong sites Sony22 (talk) 21:35, 26 January 2018 (UTC)

@Sony22: I'm reading what was reported in reliable sources, which is where information on Wikipedia is supposed to come from, per Wikipedia's policy on verifiability. Ideally, Wikipedia articles should be written from secondary sources, making Wikipedia itself a tertiary source. Wikipedia articles aren't meant to be primary sources or secondary sources, the personal recountings of people (such as yourself), or reports compiled by them from their own observations.
Further, I assume it was a journalist who wrote in that article that she did admit to pushing him. Yet here you are telling me that I should take you at your word because you're a journalist while, at the same time, I should pay no attention to the journalist who wrote that article!
I recommend that you acquaint yourself with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines before continuing to edit. Largoplazo (talk) 21:54, 26 January 2018 (UTC)

Understand

I haven't said that you should add her manslaughter conviction, because Is not a secret anymore, what I'm saying is you addding wrong references and say she admitted to push him while she didn't admit it ,the information is wrong and is from fake sites, and what kind of person you are ?? That you know everything and you don't want to be corrected .SHE DIDNT ADMIT TO HAVING PUSHED HIM,the guy himself was drunk,I put a references showing she didn't admit but you are busy removing them Sony22 (talk) 21:46, 26 January 2018 (UTC)

You removed mentions of the conviction at least three or four times.
I'm not saying at all that I know everything. I'm saying that what articles contain consist of what's written in proper sources. If you dispute what they say, it's your burden to discuss it on the article's talk page and present evidence from sources of sufficient weight for Wikipedia's purposes, under WP:V, to make your case. In the end, it may turn out that there are conflicting stories from reliable sources, and that may become reflected in the article. But you don't just go removing content attribute to apparently reliable sources just because you don't agree or because you've seen a different story elsewhere.
The reference you added says that "she denies to have caused his death", and it says she denied pushing him in a statement recorded at the time of her arrest. That doesn't mean she didn't admit pushing him later. Largoplazo (talk) 22:07, 26 January 2018 (UTC)
@Sony22: I've submitted a request to have you blocked again following your latest deletion. What's really weird is that you added the part about being released from remand again. That's what being granted bail means. Would you write "David washed his car and cleaned it"? Largoplazo (talk) 13:46, 27 January 2018 (UTC)

Feta

My problem is not with the term "white brined cheese". Of course white brined cheese can be made everywhere. The point is with the term "feta" (no cheese made in Europe is called Feta!). Check out the discussion of the page too. Thanks 151.42.104.52 (talk) 19:41, 31 January 2018 (UTC)

You deleted "white brined cheese" twice, including after I had already pointed out that they are white brined cheeses, so is it strange that I assumed you had a problem with "white brined cheese"? Largoplazo (talk) 19:46, 31 January 2018 (UTC)
Addition after what you've added. It is not Greece that has protected Feta. It's Europe. And the phrase refers to Europe. Literally no cheese is called Feta here, please come and check a supermarket in Italy, Germany or Spain out! As for Champagne: to be called this way has to be French. Otherwise it's just "sparkling wine". At least in Europe.151.42.104.52 (talk) 19:47, 31 January 2018 (UTC)
Maybe a solution could be to just write: "other white brined cheeses are made in Europe" without the "called feta" part?151.42.104.52 (talk) 19:48, 31 January 2018 (UTC)
Fine, it's Europe. I stand corrected, but it doesn't alter anything about the discussion. You seem to have trouble with the word "called". People call things by various names in supermarkets, outside of supermarkets, among friends, at buffets. "Hey, thanks for having me over for dinner. I loved those feta cheese puffs" said with indifference to whether the ingredient is a variety legally classified as feta, for example. The person has no idea what was on the label in the supermarket where I bought it, right? But do you think the person would stop and say, "I loved those ... wait, was this labeled 'feta' in the store where you bought it? I want to be sure I'm not arrested for saying 'feta cheese puffs' when I should have said 'white brined cheese puffs'." Largoplazo (talk) 19:52, 31 January 2018 (UTC)
Another user solved the problem by removing "in Europe". Largoplazo (talk) 19:54, 31 January 2018 (UTC)
And the IP is still going on about it and Parmesan. I've pointed him or her to WP:NOTAFORUM. Meters (talk) 20:11, 31 January 2018 (UTC)

Hi. The idea isnt to create a dumb list, but the fact that a search of "criticism of" creates a useful dumb list presented me with an idea of organizing the list into large categories, and that this might be useful. Give me a time frame to do this sorting. -Inowen (talk) 01:01, 2 February 2018 (UTC)

If you want a workspace for your own use, it should be in your own WP:USERSPACE, not article space. Do you want me to move out there? Largoplazo (talk) 01:04, 2 February 2018 (UTC)
@Inowen: I moved it to User:Inowen/Criticism of. Largoplazo (talk) 01:22, 2 February 2018 (UTC)

For the note, thanks. -Inowen (talk) 01:32, 2 February 2018 (UTC) BTW, could you delete Criticism of Anne Coulter its misspelled. -Inowen (talk) 01:47, 2 February 2018 (UTC)

You can always request deletion of something you've created (unless others have made substantial additions to it) by placing a {{db-author}} at the top of it. By the way, I can't delete anything because I'm not an admin. I can only submit things for deletion. Largoplazo (talk) 01:59, 2 February 2018 (UTC)

New Page Reviewer Newsletter

Hello Largoplazo/Archives, thank you for your efforts in reviewing new pages!
The NPP backlog at the end of the drive with the number of unreviewed articles by creation date. Red is older than 90 days, orange is between 90 and 30 days old, and green is younger than 30 days.

Backlog update:

  • The new page backlog is currently at 3819 unreviewed articles, with a further 6660 unreviewed redirects.
  • We are very close to eliminating the backlog completely; please help by reviewing a few extra articles each day!

New Year Backlog Drive results:

  • We made massive progress during the recent four weeks of the NPP Backlog Drive, during which the backlog reduced by nearly six thousand articles and the length of the backlog by almost 3 months!

General project update:

  • ACTRIAL will end it's initial phase on the 14th of March. Our goal is to reduce the backlog significantly below the 90 day index point by the 14th of March. Please consider helping with this goal by reviewing a few additional pages a day.
  • Reviewing redirects is an important and necessary part of New Page Patrol. Please read the guideline on appropriate redirects for advice on reviewing redirects. Inappropriate redirects can be re-targeted or nominated for deletion at RfD.

If you wish to opt-out of future mailings, go here. 20:32, 7 February 2018 (UTC)

Hi

We've not met before have we, because the name Largoplazo isn't familiar to me. Meaning that I've not seen you contributing to Vietnam related articles or involved in Vietnam related discussions. Forgive me if I'm wrong. So presumably you're entirely innocent and unaware of the history with Vietnamese fonts/titles. Please excuse then my reaction. But are you aware now that there is history? In ictu oculi (talk) 19:22, 7 February 2018 (UTC)

Except for one-offs (largely connected with my work at WP:PNT), I have no general connection to Vietnam-related articles. Largoplazo (talk) 20:52, 7 February 2018 (UTC)
Okay, so you're also not familiar with the long-running discussion on e.g. Lech Wałęsa using the Unicode Latin font wheras ኃይለ ሥላሴ is a non-Latin font. Since this is the underlying history here. The long standing consensus about Vietnamese articles is very much a by-product of consensus established a decade ago with Nico Hülkenberg and similar. Hence my surprise. In ictu oculi (talk) 16:48, 8 February 2018 (UTC)
@In ictu oculi:It would be best if you were to treat as the norm, rather than as a surprise, the circumstance that a given Wikipedian hasn't seen an arbitrary one of the thousands and thousands of discussions that have taken place here, especially when his opening comment that "I wasn't sure about common practice so I've brought it up for discussion just in case" makes it explicit that if there has been a pertinent, dispositive discussion, he hasn't seen it. "Surprise", in my opinion, is an inadequate justification for responding to a courteously and deferentially worded inquiry as though it were an outrageous demand from someone making it clear that he doesn't care about established procedure and intends to do things his own way.
Note that I'm not looking to go off into an argument about whether surprise really did suitable explain it, and I'm not trying to goad you into pursuing this any further. It's fine just to leave this as is. Largoplazo (talk) 17:48, 8 February 2018 (UTC)

Imprecision

"The imprecision with which you keep interpreting what I've written is mindblowing. The result is that, over and over, you respond to things I didn't say while failing to respond cogently to what I did say."

OMG. Saving that. So frustrating! --В²C 00:01, 9 February 2018 (UTC)
